This Monday episode of The Dan Le Batard Show covers a wide range of NFL and college football topics. Dan Le Batard and Chris Cote debate whether Lamar Jackson's injury and contract situation mean his time in Baltimore is ending, with one host arguing the Ravens should plan for life without him while others point to his leverage under his deal.
The hosts also dissect Michael Penix's four-interception game, the fallout from Florida State's firing of Mike Norvell, and the Broncos' late-game success led by Bo Nix. Listeners will hear the statistical arguments behind these views and the hosts' medal rankings of the week's most memorable moments.

A lot of fun NFL football to get to today. Some weird statistical anomalies: Michael Penix threw more interceptions than Baker Mayfield had pass attempts. After the game, Michael Penix didn't even know how many interceptions he had. He was confused. Is it 4? Is it 5? At one point in that first half, Penix had 3 interceptions, and Baker Mayfield and the Bucs had fumbled 4 times in the first half. They only lost 1 of the fumbles. But that entire game hasn't been seen in the sport in half a century.
They set the sport back half a century. And furthermore, if you're a Bucs fan, you've had a game that's got a 2-hour rain delay in it, you're sitting in the stands for that one, and nobody in your division has a winning record. Like, why are you going to those games, Saz? I'm dead serious. If you're a football fan, I felt bad for the Dolphin coaches and the Patriots yesterday just having to stand in the rain all game and just be miserable out there.
I mean, everyone else in your division being bad is the reason to go. You're more in it.
Yeah, but they're not actually in anything.
Oh, here they are.
They're half game back.
They're all bad teams.
They're the only team in their division with a positive point differential too.
Dan, can you answer something for me? If Baker Mayfield was 0 for 3 yesterday for 0 yards, how is his passer rating anything higher than 0? If you had no yards.
I thought the lowest passer rating was like 32.9 or something like that.
Now, how does that make sense?
I'm just telling you what it is. I don't know how it makes sense, but it makes sense.
How can your passer rating be anything but 0 if you don't accomplish anything in the game?
What does it matter to you?
I'm just trying to figure out how quarterback rating works, Tony. You don't like having knowledge?
Did you watch the game or no?
You know what? Did you watch the game or no?
Did you watch the game or no? You don't like football. I've realized that about you. Baker was the best quarterback on that field yesterday. So did you see how he started his press conference? Nobody talked to me.
I have 512 football observations today that I have not gotten to. The first one is, is South Carolina good now?
They got ranked. They got ranked. Classic SEC. Yeah, but unfortunately for them, we have changed the calendar to November. So we have sunset to October.
Amani Hooker had 3 interceptions yesterday.
Amani Hooker? He was good.
That's what Eugene Robinson tried to get on the streets of Biscayne Boulevard as Man of the Year before the Miami Super Bowl. I also have, in that Bucs game, Falcons game, where a pass wasn't completed from 1:05 PM to 2:45 PM, Alex Anzaloni, the linebacker for Tampa Bay, had 2 picks in the first 10 minutes. Look this up for me, Chris. There's no way he's had 2 picks in a season in his career.
That guy's been playing a while too. That guy's been playing like 10 years, and there's just simply no way. He had 2 interceptions in the first 10 minutes thrown right to his face mask, and there's just simply no way that guy has many career interceptions.
So Penix had 4 interceptions, and they didn't even consider going to 2 a?
Let's hear the back and forth in the press conference with Penix after the game, where he is asking the reporters and going back and forth with the reporters. I want to have a couple of back and forths with reporters that we have from yesterday, because Jim Harbaugh going back and forth with reporters is worth examining as well. But let's just hear from Michael Penix here as he goes back and forth with reporters with no clue as to how many interceptions he actually threw.
Do you recall a game like this before high school or college?
Like rain-wise?
Just how I performed?
Just a strange game.
Oh, man. I ain't never throw 4 picks in a game. Or was it 4 or 5? 4. Everybody know. It's all good, man. I'm going to shake back. I promise you I will. I promise you I will.
Anzaloni had 4 career interceptions before this season. He now has 3 this season.
2 in the first 10 minutes of that game. We were mentioning the University of Miami playing FSU, and Mike Norvell was fired after they lost at home to Clemson. A banner flew over the stadium that misspelled his name, Dabo Swinney, after the game. Called it shameful, embarrassing, and disrespectful to both run that banner, fly that banner, and misspell his name. Dabo also noted that they couldn't even spell his name right.
He called it, though, shameful, embarrassing, and disrespectful. Do you agree with that?
You got to just take the R there. If you could put that back up. Peter could just become Pete, and then we got fired Norvell.
That's a great point.
Like, what are we doing here with that R for Peter? Pete Collins, everyone knows it's Peter Collins.
OK, but you're saying that as if the reason it wasn't there is because they ran out of Rs.
I mean, it seems like they did. Obviously, you got to keep the R in fire. All right, they obviously only had 2 Rs, Saz. What do you think happened? You think they left an R on the lawn? You think there's just a giant R sitting on the grass where the plane takes off from?
They could have taken the R and put it to Norvell, but left fire, F-I-E. Fire, Norvell. Fire, Norvell.
That's fi. Fire is the most important word here. You got to have the R in fire. The next most important R should go to Norvell. This should be Pete Collins.
Just to rehash, you think there was a conscious decision where they said, OK, let's either make it Novell or Pete.
So you think they had.
They decided to go Novell.
So you think they had enough Rs and was like, OK, now.
Can you guys answer my question of whether or not Dabo's right when he calls it disrespectful, embarrassing, and shameful?
He'll cape up for any coach, Dan.
Yeah, that's what he's doing there. I got to tell you, I'm a Miami fan, obviously. I don't want Florida State to be winning national titles, but them being this down bad.
It's not fun.
It's not fun.
It's not fun.
I don't like it. We have a shot of the crowd. This was a 1-score game at this moment. This is a big rival for Florida State. This is just Saz. Tate Reynolds is going to run 79 yards and put this game away. It was an incredible run. But that's what the crowd is. I've seen a lot of bad Miami crowds in my day, a lot of lean seasons. I have never seen a crowd that bad. And that was a game that was in the balance. FSU was actually fighting for their coach. FSU had to do this. They have a dire financial situation. I'm not sure what they can do that is better than Mike Norvell, but the message that it sent was, I guess this is just who we are now if they didn't fire Mike Norvell.
I'm going to ask a question that's, I mean, I don't know, maybe it'll sound stupid, but if you're Mike Norvell, how do you go from 13 and 0, being left out of the playoff picture because your quarterback got hurt, but being that, and then becoming this, where for, what, 4 straight years now, which a 2-in-season followed that, but for 4 straight wins now, you just look incompetent. How's that even possible?
OK, but let's go through some of these numbers here because Mike glossed over some stuff. This program is in great debt. They don't have money. They don't have NIL money. They've got resources and recruiting issues. They just dismissed from the team the 2026 best recruit, and the president of the university just recently said to the fans, I understand your frustration. But the numbers on what this program was and what it is over the last 30 games, that's 3 seasons, 7 in 23, and they've been outscored by 200 points.
7 in 23 over their last 30 games, outscored by 200 points. You have to do something. And they were trying to get through this season with him because you never want to fire your coach during the season. You especially don't want to do it if you don't have money. Like, they don't have a solution. This is addition by subtraction. It's not because they've got an actual solution to this. This whole program is in disrepair. It's one of the worst programs in the country. You will have a hard time finding any program in the country that over the last 30 games is 7 in 23.
That's the territory of like Rice and Temple. Rutgers is probably better over its last 30 games than 7 in 23 and outscored by 200 points. FSU, during one 15-year stretch, finished in the top four every single year. This is a bona fide blue chip program. This is a program with a history that very few programs end up having. I'd put FSU's history, I'd put it top 15 all time on college football programs.
It wasn't a popular take, but when they went undefeated in the regular season, I did sound the alarm bells. Like, guys, this is a house of cards. All those guys are leaving, and they got to hit a Grand Slam again in the portal because when it comes to high school ranks, he's not very good at that. He's not good at building a program. He got hot with Jordan Travis, and that was just about it. He was out of his depth in the state recruiting. And when they went into the portal, they did spend money, but they prioritized the wrong guys. They were in on Cam Ward. They went DJ instead. They try the portal.
They just fail when they do outside of Jordan Travis.

There's always one game on the schedule that makes you start doing dangerous math. How long is a flight? Can I get back before work? Is this a terrible financial decision or a memory I'll have forever? Week 9 gives us plenty of temptation. Bengals-Falcons from Madrid, Giants-Eagles, Raiders-49ers, Packers-Patriots, Buccaneers, Bears on Sunday night, and Bills-Vikings on Monday night. That's a good one. Dan Le Batard.
If I may say for a second, Miami, they were circulating the snap count the entire game, and they were clapping at the line of scrimmage. And the only thing I want to see clapping are them cheeks on Mrs. Mac in my face, Mike's shirt. All right, so that's one thing.
Jessica Esmatana?
There are a bunch of cheaters, Dan. And you know who should be cheating? Mrs. Mac on Mr. Mac. And he can watch if he wants.
This is the Dan Le Batard Show.
Saz, let's talk a little bit about the NFL here and the situation that the Baltimore Ravens find themselves in. One of the pre-mare games yesterday was supposed to be Bills and Ravens. Lamar Jackson was coming back after several weeks off, and then on the first play of the game, he injures his thumb. And before the game is over, it's being reported, he goes immediately on injured reserve. And then what was the name of their third-string quarterback?
Finnano.
Joey Finnano. Is that how he pronounces his name?
Dangerous game.
Yeah, the spelling on that is dangerous.
I looked at it, I was like, oh, that's how you spell it. He was good at Connecticut.
He was not good in the pros. He was not good in the NFL.
Tough spot.
Tough spot.
What are you going to do there?
Oh, wait a minute. Was it a tough spot for Minshue? Was it a tough spot?
Minshue's been in the league for 30 years.
Was it a tough spot?
So this guy's a rookie.
Was it a tough spot for a backup quarterback in Dallas to go into the game?
I'm going to go ahead and say for Minshue, no. Comparatively, not a tough spot for the third-string rookie quarterback that wasn't even he was just an emergency guy.
If you want to play two defenses in the NFL, it's Dallas and Buffalo. Those are the two defenses you want to play if you're a backup quarterback. If that's a tough spot, they're all tough spots.
This is a weird take by you. It's a weird take.
Then he can't play against anybody. He can't play against anybody.
How many snaps do you think he got in practice?
If you can't play against how many do you think Minshue got?
How many?
You think Minshue got a bunch? Minshue could have gone out there in his jean shorts and done the same thing against Dallas.
You're talking about a legend.
I think Minshue was prepared for the Dallas game.
One thing we know about Minshue, he had balls.
Balls.
It's true.
Balls. I don't want to get bogged down with the third-string quarterback there. This is a really sad season for Lamar Jackson. And I've always been kind of skeptical about Lamar. And this season, he blown me away. I thought he was throwing the ball incredibly well when he was out there. Shut me up. I became a Lamar Jackson fan this season. It's just so unfortunate, the injuries that he's gone through. And now he looks like a guy that all the hits that he's taken because he's super mobile, all that stuff is catching up with him. And now he's just an injury-prone guy.
Well, yeah. All right, but this injury that's going to shelve his season yesterday isn't style or play-based. It's a total fluke. I mean, he hit his hand his very first throw against another player's hand. But I'll tell you, Dan, and I don't think I'm being hyperbolic here, Lamar Jackson has one more year left under contract next year. He's only going to be 31 at the end of next season. So he's certainly going to want major money as a two-time MVP would be expected to ask for.
I think that he just played his last game as a Baltimore Raven. I think he's done there.
Wait a minute. They built the whole thing around him, though. They got rid of Harbaugh. Like, he's got actual power there as well. The whole thing is built around him. After he goes into a negotiation, he doesn't have an agent. The league very obviously colludes to keep him in Baltimore in a way that was just offensive and obvious. And then he goes back there and he gets his money. You have to have something better in order to move on from Lamar Jackson. Like, when you look at some of these teams in the league who have not fixed their problems, Arizona has not fixed its problems because what they have at quarterback are a bunch of bandages.
The Jets have not fixed their quarterback problem. What they have at quarterback, even though they have Geno Smith, who's been decent for them, is just a bandage. They haven't actually fixed their future. You can't just move on from Lamar Jackson if you don't have anything to come behind him because the Ravens are one of the best franchises in the sport the last 25 years.
And it's fiscally irresponsible too. His cap hit next year for 27 is $84 million.
Oh, I'm not saying they're going to cut him.
But regardless, you're going to have to have somebody take on that money. If you trade him, you're going to have to have somebody like, hey, you got $84 million for a quarterback who's kind of hurt? Yeah, no, I don't think so. I think it's one more year they're going to see what they have.
You think that he's going into the final year of a contract with no new deal? No chance. And coming off an injury? No chance.
He's going to sit? He's going to hold out? One thing's for certain, this can't be the plan anymore. They need to have a better backup plan. I know only made up. Probable. But they can't be held hostage by Lamar. Remember, Lamar misses seasons sometimes to avoid getting hurt when he was doing his contract thing. It's just too much on one guy. It's a deep quarterback class. I'm not saying this is the last time we'll see him in that uniform, but this is the last of, hey, we're all in on Lamar, and this is our franchise.
I think you guys are doing this wrong. You guys have this wrong because you're doing this the way that it's always been done in the NFL, as if it's Baltimore's choice and not Lamar's. Lamar can do whatever Lamar wants at the end of this season.
You guys got to have the same kind of suitors? This is when it starts going. This is when. This is when you have to decide.
I'm just saying you're looking at it wrong when you assume that Lamar hasn't set this up contractually so that he has an NBA player's freedom at the end of this season going into a lame duck year. I understand why you're doing it. You're not used to the football players having the basketball power. I understand why organizationally you're assuming it's something the Ravens can do.
He famously doesn't have the power. The league colluded against someone who tried to represent himself.
Lamar's got better options here than Baltimore does. Lamar is going to have better options here than Baltimore has his options.
I think it's strange when you consider the last time he tried to use his power and it didn't end up working. And now, at this stage in his career, with even more questions about him, I don't think he has the power, especially when you consider how deep that quarterback class is. I'm certain someone will give him a chance. He still has a load of talent. Like, he was throwing the ball really well.
Give him a chance. He's a two-time MVP. He's 31.
Yeah, and he's always hurt now.
Give him a chance.
He's 29. He's only 31. Obviously, he'll be 31 at the end of next season.
Yes, but if you're forecasting this guy, you want to buy up all the Lamar Jackson soccer right now? Do you? It's a question that you have to ask inside your front office. This is risky.
I'm looking at every team in the league's quarterback situation, and there aren't a lot who couldn't use Lamar Jackson.
And I think with what they're doing offensively, remember, the first game we saw them, Lamar and Zay Flowers had 150 yards and two touchdowns in the first half. And everybody's saying, oh my God, wait a second. Declan Doyle has completely revitalized this offense and going to change Lamar's trajectory for the next couple of years. He gets hurt. He gets hurt again. I think Baltimore is going to look around and say, all right, we know what we have when everybody's healthy, when Zay Flowers is ready, when Lamar is ready, when Derek Henry is ready. This is an elite offense with a Super Bowl ceiling. Right now, we have to just wait and see because at the price tag of $84 million, you're handcuffed.
You have no moves.
He will finish this season having played four games and one pass. OK, so five games, if you want to call it that. He's going to be 30 by the start of next season. He's going to need a new contract by the start of next season. He's not going to take less than like $65 million per season. And like you mentioned, Dan, this is one of the best organizations in football over the last 20, 25 years. Doesn't that mean they would say, hey, we can't pay him $65 million a year when he's going to be on the other side at 30 and is always hurt?
We're a good enough organization. We're going to trade, get draft capital, and we're going to build this thing back up.
He did a contract that allows him to have the options at the end of this season, injured or not. When you guys say injury-prone, you got it right, but it made me think of something that happened during yesterday's game that I'm guessing most people didn't notice and is just a simple byproduct of what happens in that sport. I've told you that I've come to realize just recently how numb I have gotten to the amount of injuries that there are all the time while you're watching football, so much so that my wife makes me laugh 20 times a weekend walking past the television and saying, let me guess, someone else got hurt and there's a card on the field or a stretcher or somebody limping off of the field.
Did you guys see the end of Raiders-Jets yesterday? Because when I tell you guys again and again that these pieces are interchangeable and there are very few players in the NFL that you would recognize without their uniform or their helmet on, one of the things that happens in the dehumanizing of these people is that you can, because it's your fantasy league, you can forget the humanity that's in those uniforms, but less so when it's Mason Taylor, nephew of Jason Taylor, and you know some of the people involved with this.
The end of Raiders-Jets yesterday, the Jets are out of timeouts. It's a totally panicked situation. They throw the ball down the field to Mason Taylor.
That's Jason's son.
Jason's son. Right, I said Joy's nephew.
I said Jason's nephew.
My bad. I meant Joy's nephew. Right. So Mason Taylor, though, with 20 seconds left in the game, they're down. They throw him deep down the field. He's big. And he lands in a way that has him writhing on the ground. And then the camera pulls away, and I'm like, uh-oh, there are 20 seconds left. They don't have timeouts. They're going to lose their time. The next thing I see is Mason Taylor on the sidelines writhing on the ground. I don't know whether he limped off, whether they pulled him off by the arms.
I don't know how he got there. I didn't think it was off his own power that this giant person, that somebody ran on the field and yanked him by his hair off the field so he would stop writhing on the field and cost them a 10-second delay because they don't have a timeout and would start writhing off of the field. Can you look up the size of Mason Taylor for me just so because he's really big. And the way he landed, you know he landed in a way that was you know it looked like it was spasming a little bit. And I didn't see the camera shot that took him from the middle of the field to the sidelines, but I assume the staff of giant people came out and not unlike pallbearers just grabbed him and ran him off of the field while he was spasming.
6'5", 250.
That's a big dude. To close the conversation with Lamar and all the quarterbacks, really, in this league, next year is a fascinating year when it comes to quarterback evaluation because you got about like seven guys that are either first-round or fringe at the quarterback position. You got MessiMaker, Dante Moore, Trinidad Chamblers, Arian Mensah, Arch Manning, Jaden Maiava, Lenoir Seller, Sam Levitt. It's a good year to be bad, and it's an even better year to weigh your options.
Why is he laughing like that?
Dolphin fan.
I mean, that's a dolphin fan looking at all those quarterbacks. But why is it sinister?
Yeah, but there's a lot of options.
Yeah, but they're all like there isn't the the can't-miss prospect. This isn't the Trevor Lawrence Andrew Luck year. There's a lot of guys that you have question marks about. They pulled GMs. They pulled GMs. And the guy that came away with the most first-round grades was MessiMaker, and he didn't get any of those preseason.
That's Lamar Jackson right now laughing with a no-trade clause and a no-franchise clause and an $80 million.
Oh, does he have a no-trade?
Yeah. Yeah, you guys, I'm telling you, he set it up. You guys keep making Baltimore in charge of this. I'm like, Baltimore ain't in charge of this. Lamar's in charge of this.
He can waive it, though, if he wants.
You got to trade him.
Yeah, but it's his choice.
Right.
Yeah, that's what I'm saying.
They'll collaborate. They'll send him to some place.
His choice will be to go to the place that offers him the money.
But what I'm telling you is, yeah, he'll have a suitor, and he'll enter a last year of his contract, maybe part of that deal. If there's a feeding frenzy for him, which is hard to imagine given what we've discussed, yeah, he'll get himself some more insurance with more years. But he is at the stage in his career right now where he cannot be the all-in plan.
I don't think we see him there next year.
Wherever he goes, I would virtually guarantee you there's a succession plan in place, if not beforehand, after drafting.
And the place that I would stop you when you say, given the condition he's in, is that Deshaun Watson got huge guaranteed money? Because you guys are forgetting how hard it is to find people who play this position well.
Well, you're forgetting that Deshaun Watson also had a lot of backup plans.
And I think also, isn't that the reason that we're not going to see it again? It's because Deshaun Watson.
100%.
Got that money.
100%. The days of going all-in, giving him the big contract, and just having your season on his shoulders, I think, have come and gone.
It's also poor ownership with a Jimmy Haslam who will give money to literally anybody. Ask a bum on the side of the street. Hey, who do you want me to take? Johnny Manzel? You got it, buddy.
Dan Le Batard.
You're going to go to Buffalo with Bernie Parmalee.
Mike Ryan.
And the Jigs. This is the Dan Le Batard Show. Chris, when you laugh that way, since you're thinking about the Dolphins there, there is one thing from the Dolphin game that I want to put in front of people. And that Dolphin game is pretty much the perfect way to tank.
They are getting slightly better every week, and they're still losing the games so that they can get some better players. But the only thing I want to discuss from that game is how much Mike Vrabel didn't need to throw that challenge flag all the way across the stadium. Like, what is it? He had the ref right next to him. He could have just thrown it on the floor. It was a touchdown, and it was clearly a touchdown that his own receiver needed after he got past the goal line. You think that Vrabel had to throw that flag as far as he threw it?
Like, he launched it the way that you would launch it if you were trying to toilet paper somebody's house.
He was making a point there. He's like, oh, you guys think that wasn't a touchdown? You've been screwing me all game. Ready for this one?
Here you go, 64 yards.
But the ref was right next to him.
That doesn't matter.
He had more attempted air yards than Baker did yesterday.
What happened there? You got in strong? You're tired from all your laughing? You're tired from all your Halloween laughing? What happened? You got close to the point you were going to make the man. Forget it was Baker that threw the non-passes?
Tony and I have been finishing each other's sentences, so I wanted Tim to like, I started the sentence, and I thought he'd finish it, but he failed.
No, but you screwed me in the shadows, though, so I had to let that one go.
In the what?
Oh, you're going to do that to me?
Talk is tough.
Why is Vrabel throwing the ball, throwing the flag 50 yards? Why is he doing that? Was that necessary to anybody?
Hey, what's the reminder? Everybody's got to chooch.
Why was he so wet? I get it was raining. Give my man a towel.
Why was he so wet?
The entire game, his like hair was dripping down.
It looked miserable.
You got to what? Hey, you got like 48 assistants watching your every move? Give my man a towel. Wipe off your face. He was dripping wet the whole game.
Wow.
Let's talk, and I didn't think I'd be saying this sentence today before the weekend started about Tennessee-Cincinnati. Joe Burrow finally has some game-ending, game-winning heroics. That stat sheet is crazy.
Was he good or did he stink?
For Joe Burrow? I mean, he was both. Yes.
Yes is the answer to your question.
He was incredible. No, he had a couple bad throws.
He did.
He was kind of stinky.
He did. I mean, again, Amani Hooker had three interceptions. I don't imagine there are a lot of guys in the NFL who have a weekend with three interceptions. He also had five touchdown passes. Joe Burrow did, not Amani Hooker. That would be amazing if Amani Hooker had three interceptions and five touchdown pays. Five touchdown. Amani Hooker. Tennessee-Cincinnati. Tennessee basically felt like they had that game that Cincinnati played exactly the game you would need them to play for Cincinnati as a 13-and-a-half-point underdog to win on the road.
Overdog.
Cincinnati ends up dragging them at the end, and it is a wildly high-scoring football game in which, as I mentioned during the Shadow Show, Gunner Helm is in the end zone doing the Michael Jordan shrug. Gunner Helm. I don't know how I'm so good. I don't know how I keep dominating for the 1-6 Titans thrown to by Cam Ward. You guys didn't think that was the best game of the weekend, right? You think Cardinals-Cowboys was the best game of the weekend?
Denver-KC. That's one. Even better than the Miami-North Carolina game, even better than Minnesota-Indiana, to have a play, to have man, the Broncos just do this in the fourth quarter. The dark arts. It's so crazy that they always do that.
They've been doing it since Tebow.
Yeah. To have one play. It ended up being two because of the pre-snap penalty. But to have Patrick Mahomes march down the field and have one play inside the red zone for the game with four seconds left, that was awesome.
Brittany Mahomes thinks that the referees are out to get the Chiefs. She did not appreciate the touchdown being called back at the end. Everybody knows that the officials have been screwing the Chiefs for the last few years.
Well, there were a few things at the end of this game that I thought were worth talking about, OK? There are three different things. And to me, it would be in this order, OK? The bronze medalist of the three things that are most interesting in this game was JJ Watt doing the job perfectly as a broadcaster. And you could have put in just a soundboard that hit the notes that JJ Watt was hitting because he was summoning the charisma and enthusiasm that you have to summon for these moments, even if you're not someone who is generally this joyous.
JJ Watt was simply shouting, "This is incredible. This is awesome." And he just kept saying it again and again. It didn't feel like it was sincere. It felt like in a bunch of meetings, they told JJ, "Can you summon Moore Romo? Moe, Romo. Can you just " and he can't, but he tried, and it's all he has to do. Can you make him forget about the pills and the drinking, JJ, by just shouting again and again how great the sport is because Kansas City's on the one-yard line? The silver medalist of interesting things from that game is the Chiefs inside your five have to be the at the end of the game, have to be the most terrifying thing in the sport inside of your five.
I heard said of Arizona during the game yesterday. The broadcaster said, "No team gets to the red zone more and scores less than the Arizona Cardinals." The Chiefs are like the opposite of that. They didn't get to the red zone at all last week. But if they're in your red zone, you're backpedaling.
Just for our bookkeeping over here, these are observations and medals?
Yes. These are three observations and also bronze, silver, and gold medalist of observations from just that game among my 512 observations.
Yeah, you're the one that.
So the silver medalist, though, is the idea that in that situation.
This is bronze.
No, I already did bronze. The bronze was JJ Watt. This is incredible.
You've done to him. Wait, so you skipped silver?
You have a tie for silver?
Which direction are you going?
I'm doing silver now. This is very easy to follow. I did bronze a second ago, and bronze is just JJ Watt shouting, "This is incredible. This is awesome." It's all they need from him.
Right, but then you gave another.
No, that was from the Arizona.
Did he repeat bronze?
It was a subplot.
It's a different observation. It's not in the medals.
A sub-observation.
These are the three medals from the Kansas City-Denver game, which you guys I wanted to talk. I already told you I wanted to talk about Tennessee-Cincinnati, and I want to talk about Arizona-Dallas. You said, "No, guys, this is a better game. This is a better game. Denver and Kansas City." It wasn't a better game. It's just better teams. It's not a better game. It's just better teams.
At one point, JJ Watt just said, "AFC West."
Yeah.
I felt that.
I started nodding. I was like, "Yep."
Under the lights.
Under the lights. These uniforms. AFC West.
Yeah, JJ Watt.
He's missing loins. That's his issue. If I was there in the broadcast, I'd be like, "More loins." Right? Like, Tony would grab it from, "Oh, I don't know." Jayden's like, "Oh, yes, this is great."
I'm happy right now.
It's missionary, but we're still getting to know each other.
You got to dig in there.
More loins.
Dig in there, JJ.
I think Jim Nance would be fine with just a soundboard of old Romo sounds where he just hits.
Where he hits it himself.
Yeah, he doesn't even need.
Yeah, can he zoom in?
I don't know what kind of cuts are coming to Paramount and CBS. Like, maybe they're trying to save money. They're trying to change all those salaries. It might just be, "Let me hit a soundboard of Romo sounding excited. I can get him to just say, 'This is incredible. This is awesome.'."
Does he do what you do and kind of look at the button bust and like, "Oh, it's here somewhere?"
He'll get it at it eventually.
Oh, oh.
We all agree that was not a false start, right? That was a bad call.
Yeah, that was a bad call.
That dude was just looking back at his quarterback in the Chiefs game.
So you agree with Brittany Mahomes?
I thought that he was just clearly looking back at the quarterback. That was like the classic left tackle looking back. I need to see a jolt.
I didn't think that was a penalty.
For it to be a false start, I got to see a jolt.
It was a false start.
There was no jolt there. He was just looking back at the quarterback.
Absolutely moved back. His right leg absolutely moved back.
I disagree. Well, they won't stop talking about it in Kansas City. Remember when Kaderius-Tony lined up offsides and Patrick Mahomes did not shut up for two weeks?
Can only imagine what Nick Wright tweeted after that game.
Oh, you know what he tweeted. Nick Wright goes into full press conference mode after the Chiefs lose and feels like he needs to comment. So he congratulated the Broncos.
Oh, very honorable.
On a gritty effort.
He thinks there are people who pull up in Twitter like, "I got to see what Nick Wright has to say about the result."
Yes. You're surprised that Nick Wright is a narcissist that loves the sound of his own voice and his own thoughts?
We all just did that.
Silver medalist.
OK.
The scariest thing in that sport has to be the Chiefs at the end of a game driving against you inside of your five-yard line with time and timeouts. So much so that you saw Andy Reid goofing around, throwing the little underhand pass to Kenneth Walker there to get to the one-yard line. But then they failed, which was an upset, I thought, to get a single yard when they were inside the five-yard line. They failed to win that game. But here's my gold medalist from the Broncos-Chiefs game.
I don't know how what I'm about to say is true, but it is empirically true. Bo Nix is the best late-game quarterback in the sport. And it's not statistically arguable. When he trails in the fourth quarter, he's 12 and 12. That record might not sound like much, but Mahomes is like 23 and 33. If you trail once in the fourth quarter, you're going to have a losing record. But I'll go a step further on this, and this is the part that's crazy.
In games where he's down 11-plus points in the fourth quarter, he's 3 and 3. Shanahan doesn't have one of those. Brock Purdye doesn't have one of those where they've come back from down 11 in the fourth quarter, and Brock Purdye's 3 and 3. And it's always the same way. It's a little screen pass for 60 yards, or it's him running 70 yards. It's not because he's picking you to death. It's just they're figuring out ways to win because nobody's better in one-score games than the Broncos. The Broncos' record since last year. Look at what I'm about to say. This is true, and nobody would guess it.
The winningest quarterback in the sport since the start of last season is Bo Nix. Nobody has more wins in the sport since the start of last season than Bo Nix. It's not accurate. It's just weird. He's not actually the best quarterback in the sport late. It's just a weird mathematical oddity that makes no sense.
It just goes to show you how good their defense is, that Bo Nix, being so bad, can be so good at playing quarterback because their defense is great.
Bo Nix has a 118.9 passer rating when down 1 to 8 points in the fourth quarter, playoffs included. That ranks first amongst 169 quarterbacks with at least 75 attempts since 1991. He is the best fourth-quarter quarterback.
You're telling me if you don't complete a pass and you have no touchdowns, your passer rating's not zero? Like, we're staying with that? It's not zero?
That's correct.
OK. All right. You heard those stats, and you were like, "Actually, I came away more impressed with the defense"?
Yeah.
All right. That's right.
OK. Bo Nix having more wins than any quarterback in the sport since the start of last season and Denver winning all of their ridiculous one-score games. Like, the way they're going to lose is the way they lost last year in the playoffs by one score because Jared Stidham's in the game and Bo Nix isn't there to save you. But Bo Nix does not lose in these situations. And Matthew Berry, who again was very good for you guys on Friday, if you are using his fantasy or fantasy advice as fantasy advice or as gambling advice, you're doing very well with Matthew Berry.
What he says is so, and yet Matthew Berry's saying, "I do not believe in Bo Nix. I would bet all of the unders on Bo Nix," which then go over the moment he throws a screen pass for 60 yards, which is what keeps happening with that. I was stunned Kansas City lost that game. I really was. I was stunned not beforehand. Once I see what it was in the fourth quarter, I'm like, "Kansas City's going to pull away here," right? But I'm going to give you the stat again in the event that math is something that hurts your head this early in the morning on a Monday.
Listen close, Tony.
11-plus points down in the fourth quarter, Bo Nix for his career is 3 and 3, down 11-plus points in the fourth quarter. Kyle Shanahan and Brock Purdye have not once rallied from a deficit like that in the fourth quarter, and they've been one of the best organizations in the sport for the last 10 years. And what Bo Nix is doing, I don't believe anyone here believes in, but Denver Bronco fans do because they saw Tebow do stuff like this once upon a time when it was a miracle, and Bo Nix is better than Tebow.
He would not fit in my top 10 quarterbacks, but he seems to have an ability late that most quarterbacks do not have. Bo Nix is better than Joe Burrow late, and I don't think anybody would select Bo Nix over Joe Burrow late.
He also has Sean Payton. I feel like that's a factor.
Yeah, to me, I'm not dismissing what Bo Nix is accomplishing. He's ultimately the guy making the plays, but that's as much a Sean Payton stat as a Bo Nix one.
And to harp on the defense, like, there's been three iterations of this Broncos team where the defense has dragged a quarterback that hasn't been that good to the playoffs and to a Super Bowl. Right? Happened with Tebow, happened with Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler, and now happening with Bo Nix where he's a pedestrian quarterback, yet the defense puts them in situations that are plus.
They've won 15 straight one-score regular season games. The one they lost was in the playoffs last year. It was weather. It was their backup quarterback. But 15 straight one-score wins is absolutely a tribute to Sean Payton. Everybody would. Man, when the margins are this close, and you see how Aaron Glenn lost yesterday? And Aaron Glenn is what, 50 and 20 in his first 25 games? They lose one-score games all the time, the Jets do.
You typically side on that's not an ability. But with Denver and Sean Payton, are you leaning that way? Those stats kind of support it.
I mean, it has been an ability since the beginning of last year, but I will say again that they lost in the playoffs by one score, and I know it was their backup quarterback, but I'm not expecting Bo Nix in the snow to keep doing the things he's been doing outside of the snow.
