Who the hell wants to watch football? It's boring as hell.
Well, I mean, I for one like watching football, and in fact I like talking about football. Let's do that right now, shall we? Especially now that we have Halloween in the rearview mirror and the holiday season proper is upon us. The raven season might also be over, along with Halloween. Same goes for Ohio State. We'll see about that. Hi and hello, my fellow football Americans. Welcome to the NFL Week 8 wrap-up. Welcome to Football America, presented by DraftKings Sports, available in 50 states, which I'm pretty sure is all of them.
We are on episode number 96. The fellas are gathered down there in Miami, Florida. Nick Kostos will be joining us momentarily. Hello to 10 Day Tony Collode, author, of course, of 10 Day Tony Substack. And Buddy Bidalski is back from his wedding. And Gino Fuentes, I told you, fellas, about USC over the Buckeyes. How about that Hoosiers-Gophers game? Has college football, or really has NFL even, ever had two guys make 60-plus-yard field goals at the same time?
Never as consequential as those two field goals. Now we await a huge Saturday. Catholics and convicts getting it on. That's the headline. But in Utah, it's Mormon v. Mormon. So much to kibitz about. Gino Fuentes, how are you, fella? And let's start it off the way we do every episode here: honoring the player who wore the episode number best. Number 96 is what we're on.
Quick confirmation for you, Dave. There are, in fact, 50 states. Moving on to number 96.
Okay, good.
Cortez-Kennedy is the standout here. Richard Dent double-dipped in this number. He, you know, was most known for 95, but he did wear 96 for a little bit. There are some honorable mentions: Clyde Simmons and Sean Jones, but otherwise a quiet number in the NFL.
Paul Soleil.
Oh, Paul Soleil.
My dog, grown up. I love Paul Soleil.
300 pounds.
For the Dolphins. Yeah. And Dave, to clarify, it was not my wedding. It was a family wedding. It was not my wedding, though.
I didn't think it was your own wedding. I thought you would have made a bigger deal about it.
Well, Buddy Bidalski is back from his wedding. It was not my wedding. It was a wedding that I attended. But yeah, it was a nice weekend and game, so it was a good time.
That's like my old man used to always say. Like, I was just making—I was giving you ownership of something. He's like, "We got you your beer." Like, when I would go to visit, he's like, "We got you your beer." Like, it was somehow an attack. It was passive-aggressive. Like, we weren't going to have you if you didn't—you wouldn't be comfortable if you didn't have your blankie called beer, right? Tony, what a weekend. But we have barely a moment to really talk about that because I'm sure the region in Football America, in which you sit, is buzzing about Kane's and Irish.
Yeah, I'm surprised that the Irish are laying 6.
I agree. I think the—I think it's going to get a little bit closer, spread-wise, as the game gets closer. But man, nothing like huddled around a small phone, watching the destiny of this Miami Hurricanes team on a little tiny phone with my brother-in-law, who's dressed as Michael Jackson, and I'm dressed as Sully from Monsters, Inc., while I'm at a party where nobody cares about football, Dave. Can you imagine showing up to a Halloween party expecting, obviously hoping, that somebody here—Miami Hurricanes-like zone—somebody's going to be watching a very consequential game?
No. They had Spotify on playing spooky tunes, Dave.
No, no, no.
Monster Mask can only be played so many times before I didn't have the guts to ask, "Hey, can we change this and put the game on?" They didn't even have, like, the game on with things. I had to watch it on my phone.
Oh my God. That's.
If you're going to get married, though, if you're going to get married on Halloween, shouldn't it be a costume party? I feel like it. Like a high-end one. Like the kind Bruce Wayne goes to, you know? Like the people.
Like a masquerade ball.
Yeah, like where you hold the—could be something like that. Anyway, we have so much to talk about. And you know, I don't want to get bogged down with this. I try to not be a jerk about it. One of my most curmudgeonly takes is: I don't love Halloween. I love it for the kids. I love the little kids and their outfits and how thrilled they are with it and all of that. That it is now bled into every corner of society, and you're a jerk if you aren't in a costume, even if you're a grown-up. I'm just happy we've turned the page for another year, and now we can get into the holidays that really matter.
Specifically, the best holiday of them all: Thanksgiving. And that does herald Thanksgiving. What really heralds the holiday season is the start of Shepard's season, which is on the Wednesday night before Thanksgiving. Because from that Wednesday until nightfall on January.
What a shitty season.
I thought—I was looking over the fire.
The best time of year.
I thought, Buddy, I thought it was a you guys thing. Or I was like, Buddy, is that something that I'm missing as part of the tribe? I'm like, what is that?
No, no, no. No, it's the annual. It marks the start of the sweet spot on the calendar, which is when Shepard's season arrives. It usually was punctuated when I was growing up by the Penguins playing a home game, and that was when I attended that. That's when it officially started. But then from that point forward, the rest of the work and/or school calendar is like, maybe you show up, maybe you don't, and you can be drunk when you do, and people giving gifts here and there, and football, football, more football, and now basketball's on, and hockey, and all the—it's just the best time of the year.
That's why. And maybe I'll start it a little early this year because I'm so excited about how things are going. In the meantime, mixed bag overall for your pal, Dave, in terms of this past Sunday's forecast. I did say that the Broncos would win that game if they had Jalen Waddle and Zach Allen. They did, and they did win. The Vikes' defense let me and, more importantly, themselves down in a big spot there. Bucks won a game without a completed pass for the first time in, like, a half-century or something like that.
I am burying the lead. Good for you and your wedding buddy, whoseever wedding it was. And sorry for your times, Tony. But for me, the highlight was the Cressey Celts on Friday night, champions of the Del Ray League for a second straight season, one loss, now onto the playoffs. Shout out, Football America of the Week. Ignacio came up to me at Salesian High School to say he was there. He was shooting pictures for Salesian, but he heard on the Dan Le Batard Show on Friday us talking about that game, and he said, "Oh, I had to track you down because I heard you were going to be here, and I wanted to say hello."
And so hello to you, Ignacio, and thanks for saying hello. You are the Football American of the Week. The Steelers whipped the brownies. What else is new? Dallas did have the worst loss. Sensei almost had the worst loss. And the Titans fans should be relieved. Yeah, presented by Jägermeister. Serve it cold or don't serve it at all. Jägermeister. Damn, that's cold. For more, visit Jägermeister. Drink responsibly. Too late with the wind now. I'm into it, fellas. I'm into it.
You know, phew, that was a little too close for comfort. Am I right, Titans fans? Near disaster. You almost won a game that you weren't supposed to win. You fans of fancy pants contending teams may not know what I'm talking about. I know everybody's focused on the high-end teams chasing glory. Don't worry, we're going to talk about them. But as society's greatest empath, I feel it's important to pay some mind to the other end of the spectrum and what's becoming an interesting race to be first next spring. Fans be damned. The soft tanking is all the rage in our league right now, isn't it?
Listen, I doubt anyone wants to go 0 for the season. That's Browns and Lions crap. It's disgraceful for the Chargers to be pursuing it. I don't think they are. It would be terrible if the Dolphins had done it. Even bad for the Titans, given their history, to embrace such an eternal stink. By the way, pop that champagne, Larry Zonka. And the other 72 Dolphins still around. I think tanking in the NFL is kind of dumb. All Cleveland got for the 2017 season-long lack of effort was Baker Mayfield, who I don't think even plays there anymore.
Based on his stat line, I'm not sure he's playing anywhere. Downstate from the Tampa St. Pete region, though. You've got the Dolphins. I'm not sure how Malik Willis and Miami-based football fans are supposed to feel week to week. But when John Eric Sullivan and Jeff Hafley took their talents to South Beach, they more or less announced they're playing the stink in '26. Far as that goes, is Hafley giving an inspirational halftime speech when they're up 10 against the Patriots on Sunday? What the hell's going on out there? What are you doing? Winning a game.
At least the Colts seem to have accepted their new plan. Still, it's got to be weird vibes with Carly Ersay patrolling the sidelines. Players know most of them are on the trade block. They're down 42 to 7, and the owners down there next to them positively delighted. The best part of this, though, is the Chargers, who, like I say, I'm pretty sure are trying to win games. At this point, though, maybe they ought to trade Justin Herbert to the Ravens. Or maybe the Chargers could try to get Lamar Jackson in the offseason, because I don't think he's going to be a Raven in '27.
Meantime, rejoice, Chargers fans, or at least root for the silver lining. You're not just bad. You're bad, bad. And as such, you're in first place to be last. And sure seems the mentality these days is, if you're not first, you may as well be last. Buddy, where is the headspace of the Dolphins fan right now?
I think Dolphins fans are having more fun than they've had in a long time. And that may sound crazy, but this is, like, the perfect tank. It is so ethical. They compete hard. They play hard. They fight for their coach. Their coach goes for it on fourth down in the ball game last week to beat the Jets. They beat the Jets. Their young kids are all good. They're fun. It's not a bad watch. And at the end, they lose.
If I may add.
If I may add. We just had the Vikings lose. Would you bring up my boy, Larry?
Yes, great week for the Dolphins as well, because obviously we get to celebrate. The 72 Dolphins remain the only undefeated team. And Sonk posted on Instagram as well, as he always does every year. But I think right now, like, I'm enjoying what the Dolphins are doing. I'm feeling hopeful for the first time in a long time that they have something building here, because you can see the flashes with the young kids, and they compete, they fight. They like Hafley. He's clearly a good player's coach. And I don't know. I'm obviously.
Well, listen.
What I think is interesting there.
They're out on the field against the Patriots, who did basically this around Drake May. And it was sort of like, these are good results for us. We're not winning the games, but you're seeing the progression. You don't necessarily have the answer, but maybe you do in Malik Willis. And if you do wind up first overall, the prize will be Jeremiah Smith, which could change the offense no matter where he lands in Football America. All right, let's keep talking about this. Justin Herbert, man, he really is one of the pieces I highly doubt the Chargers are actually going to move him, but it would make some sense given where they are in the standings right now.
Let's talk about that. Let's talk about all of it with our guy joining us as he does every Monday. He is the mastermind of You Better, You Bet, Monday through Friday, 9:00 to noon. He's Nick Kostos. What's the poop, fella?
Oh, great to be on with you, my friend. You said a couple of things that were absolutely insane in that open. May I recount a few of them for you?
I would like that.
Okay. First thing is your assertion that if you get married on Halloween, it should be a costume event. What woman do you know would feel comfortable being upstaged as a bride with, like, their hot friend dressed as a sexy nurse? What woman would want that? Zero.
How aristocratic could you be? You schedule it on Halloween, but you're not going to honor that?
You can't have it be. No, because you'll ruin it. Like, your wife's going to hate you forever. Like, this is true. You could have.
Nick, this is upscale, though. Hold on. This is upscale. This is a masquerade ball.
Listen.
She's a witch. She's taking away. She's putting a spell on Halloween. You don't get it in Baker honoring me.
There are ugly men that can't do anything about the fact that they're ugly. But an ugly woman could wear a police hat on Halloween, and all of a sudden, she's hot. I don't make the rules. This is just how it goes. You can't have this on Halloween. You upstage the bride. Second off, your narcissism and ego is absolutely out of control. You literally have a term for what all of us call the holiday season. You called it. You named it after yourself. You go, "Wow, after Halloween to January is the best time of year." You know who knows that? Everybody. You know what we call it? The holiday season. You call it the Sheki season.
What the hell's wrong with you, buddy?
It ain't—I call it the Shepard's season. And Shepard's season isn't a string of holidays. It's one big holiday. Don't you understand?
It's from November to January, right?
That's right. That's exactly right.
Yes, yes. We call it the holiday season, Dave.
You know what I was thinking about? And I'd love to hear about your Halloween with your little girl dressed up as a cat and all that kind of stuff. You know, I haven't really considered one of my great laments as a sports fan is the loss of January 1st ball games when all hash was settled from, you know, from dawn until nightfall. Basically, you didn't know who was number one going in, but when you put your head on the pillow, sad because you knew when you woke up, it was back to school and back to grim reality and all of that, or back to work.
At least you had those five ball games. I wonder what they would look like given the old tie-ins if the Big Ten champ had to play the Pac-10.
Thank God. I mean, I was—thank God it's different now. I love the playoff.
I mean, I disagree with you that that's way better. But all right, listen. What is one of the big winners of NFL Week 8 was the New York Giants. Do you agree with that? I mean, the Cowboys' loss was a stunner. I don't know what's going on with that team. My Bengals-Cowboys Super Bowl pick is ain't looking great right now. I think America's alleged team still wins that bum division. How say you?
I don't agree. I actually think—I think the Giants will win it, Dave. I think the Commanders might actually be the best team in the division.
You said that two weeks ago, to your credit.
I'm putting the Rams on upset alert coming up on Sunday when they go to our nation's capital to play the Commanders. And as far as the Cowboys go, like, look, like, we can objectively kind of laugh at the situation. I am a Giants fan, but even if you take my fandom out of the equation, like, it's kind of funny that this keeps happening to this team. You know, they blow the 14-point fourth-quarter lead against Gardner Minshew.
Wait, one?
One healthy running back, Tyler Algier, who is, like, making love to the oxygen machine on the sideline, and Michael Wilson. It's crazy that they lose this game. And, you know, Jerry Jones after the game says, "I'm not going to make a coaching change, basically, and the players let Brian Schottenheimer down." And I know that Schottenheimer and defensive coordinator Christian Parker are going to take the slings and arrows. Like, let's just tell the truth here. The Cowboys lost that game to Arizona, Dave, not on November 1st, 2026. They lost it on August 28th, 2025. When—or 2000, yeah.
When they traded Micah Parsons to the Green Bay Packers. One of the great unforced errors in the history of sports. And that decision set into motion all of these other decisions that have led to this horrendous defense for Dallas that can't hold the lead. So Jerry wanted to be a gambler, and he wanted to spend the 200 million elsewhere, and he wanted these draft picks. The defense stinks. His roll of the dice came up snake eyes. He is really to blame for this disaster, Dave, for the Dallas Cowboys.
I mean, that's some strong talk. I still don't necessarily agree with that. Where's Micah Parsons and what he—
How do you not agree with it?
Because Micah Parsons, first of all, isn't playing for the Packers.
You're butterflying affecting this, though. Like, he tore his—how do you know he would have torn his ACL if he played for Dallas?
I don't. But, you know, given some of the deals we've seen over the last, you know, what, 13, 14 months, Tony, it feels to me like they got a pretty decent haul for a high-end player. A lot of other teams making deals can't claim the same. And I think they've come away.
No, you're right. The draft for Caleb Downs and Malachi Lawrence are awesome. You're right. They nailed it. Good stuff.
Okay. What do you say, Tony?
I think that the Cowboys' defense was bad even with Micah Parsons, right? Like, he's not the reliever of all sins here. Like, there were glaring issues that they had at corner, at safety. And trading him at least gave them to the capital. Maybe Downs is not—didn't have a great game against Arizona. I think their sparks were Downs is a good player, right?
Tony, their defense stinks. Like, listen to what you're defending the Cowboys' defense right now.
No, no, no, no. I'm saying that they would have been as bad with Micah Parsons.
Okay.
And you, though, Kostos, are now keen on your Giants taking that—I mean, it's an atrocious division. But I also want to keep—want you to keep this in mind. JJ McCarthy is now their quarterback. You're that confident in Jon Harbaugh and the pieces around him that that team is going to hold on for an entire second half of a regular season?
Got it. So, Giants, I'll believe they're going to win the division if they win the next two games. And to me, like, if we're going to talk about the Giants, Dave, like, they are going to win the NFC East. And how about host the first playoff game that two teams play there, the first one in 15 years? If that's going to happen, there's no excuse. You beat the Eagles on—it's beyond insane. You beat the Eagles on Sunday in Philadelphia. Eagle season is not circling the drain. It's in the sewer with Master Splinter and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
Like, you beat the Eagles, and then you beat the Commanders at home.
Why does that get the laugh? Why are you guys laughing at Kostos's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles?
It's a good line.
Cowabunga.
Because down in the sewer, you get it? Like, it's not draining. It's not circling the drain. It's already in the sewer.
I mean, I got it.
Oh, okay.
Dave, you know what I'm laughing at? I'm laughing at—wait. So, okay. So, let's be clear. Gardner Minshew came off the bench because I missed a lot of football yesterday. And I have a top five if we want to get to it here.
Oh, here we go.
But here's what I want to know. Buddy, you produce an NFL show, and you don't know that Gardner Minshew came off the bench and went to the offseason.
I do know, but imagine my surprise when I found out.
He was getting married.
So, let's be clear. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was getting married this weekend. So, I was driving back.
Congratulations on the nuptials.
Thank you. I was driving back yesterday in the most unbelievable torrential downpour you could ever imagine from Gainesville. And of course, that meant I missed the 1:00 window. I basically only saw the back end of the full game.
Hold on a second. He was telling me, Kostos. Buddy was telling me, he's like, it was a torrential downpour, and I had both grandmothers in the car, and they wouldn't stop talking the whole time.
Listen. My grandma listens.
What is it with the weird percentage of the percentage of people who need silence because the weather is bad as they operate their vehicle?
I kind of agree with that. And Dave, I know, like, you're—see, now you're displaced because you're a California elitist, but now that you're not in the Northeast. I lived in South Florida for three years. You would not believe. Like, so I lived in South for three of my 43 years. Nine of the 10 craziest rainstorms of my life were in South Florida. So, like, Buddy's right about that.
This was.
I'm not arguing about the weather. I'm arguing about needing silence to ride.
Yeah, I would like silence. I feel like my life's on the line. I want silence.
You don't understand. You don't understand.
You don't understand. South Florida rain has, like, on and off. There's no mist setting. There's no nothing. It's just downpour.
Dave, you've never been in the car, and you're looking for an address, and the music's a little too loud, and you start turning down the radio to be like, "Where is this van?"
Yeah, where am I?
Where's this house at?
No. Well, what I don't love, Mo Dammishek does a thing with every time I stop because I guess I don't leave as much room with the car in front of me.
You're an awful driver, basically.
No, I'm more aggressive than she might care for. And she does that thing the whole time where she goes like.
Like, she always is minting.
Oh, you'll cut that out.
So, like, narcissistic Dave Dammishek. Do you know who does that? Every wife.
My grandmother did that to me.
Every woman that my wife does that all the time.
My grandmother did that to me yesterday. And Lolo, I know you're listening, and I love you very much, but I had to tell her.
You get shout-outs now?
I had to tell her. I said, "Lolo, you got to just let me focus here because this was crazy." This was a solid hour and a half of rain.

Officially delicious.
But anyway, I want to get to the top five things that I came back to that I simply could not believe after.
How about this, Kostos? He's got a top five.
Okay, now listen. Buddy, before you get over your skis here.
Yeah.
I thought you did—I thought you did a nice job last week of keeping your takes to 15 seconds.
Yeah.
So we actually—I don't know if everyone at home, but we have a timer on this because we can see it. I don't know if you people watching can see it. We're putting 15 seconds on the clock for each of these five things.
Okay. Perfect.
You have 75 seconds right now.
Okay. Here we go. Ready? Number five, the Ravens played who at quarterback? What happened? Lamar Jackson?
So this is a stand-up. This is a stand-up comedy routine, basically, from Buddy.
I don't even know what the heck your last name is.
Number four.
Honestly, it was pretty funny. Go on. Number two or number four.
Number four, Cam Ward played well and almost beat the Bengals? He threw for 300 yards and two touchdowns?
For Sam?
Good for him. Nice job, Cam. Number three, Dave, the Steelers are a good football team. How about that? You keep telling me they're not. They're a good football team. Six and two, leading the division.
I didn't say they're not good. I said that they're not a Super Bowl contender, but contenders.
Fair. I want to know, is Buddy auditioning to be the new Stugotz with this bit? Is that what this is?
Number two, Baker Mayfield threw three passes, didn't complete one, and was the better quarterback on the field yesterday. What? What the fuck?
I got to tell you, Buddy's doing a nice job with this. This is pretty good.
Thank you.
What's number one?
Rhetorical questions.
But it's kind of funny, though.
Gardner Minshew brought the Cardinals back from down 24-3 at halftime to beat the Cowboys. What the fuck are you talking about?
Oh, slicker.
Listen, this is how I found out. Dave, at the rest stop, I saw 24-3 at halftime. When I got off the highway.
12 seconds.
I checked my phone. I saw 34-30 or whatever the final score was. And the little thing on ESPN on the app had Gardner Minshew walking off the field celebrating.
Because he bowled out.
And I was like, "What?" And then I saw the box score. Three touchdowns.
That's enough. That's enough. That's exactly right. Good for you, Kostos.
Dave, it was pretty good, though. I got to give him credit.
Not bad. What I'd like to do is punch it up a little bit for next week. You can do those again for anybody who was.
Questions.
Anybody who was in a coma over the weekend, what you missed. But Buddy, then you have to do it from, like, a hospital bed or prone.
That's a good idea.
You just woke up like, "What did I miss? Gardner Minshew?" Want to get? Like, you have to do it all as though.
Rhetorical questions.
A massive surprise. A massive surprise. I still don't know what happened. I don't know how the—I heard something about him.
Great. We just told you.
Are you sure?
Enough now. Enough now.
That's right.
You're right. You're welcome.
Going forward, you are like Balboa. Or no, you're like Adrian coming out of the coma, and Kostos will be Balboa bedside, you know?
I think he did pretty well there. Now you can't overstay your welcome. That's it.
I'm done.
Now, here's my question for you. Joe Burrows' loved ones, if they care about their guy and the Bengals as an organization, should see to it that Burrow never finds himself in the same place as Mike McDaniel, right? First, he wrecks Tuwa. Now, Justin Herbert, Burrow's the last guy from that draft class for him to ruin. He's like the Terminator, is McDaniel, but he's a nerd knocking off all of Sarah Connors in the phone book one by one. Avoid him like the plague, Joe Burrow, if you know what's good for him.
But Kostos, do you think, like, is it possible, or is it probable that the time in Ann Arbor has now outmoded Jim Harbaugh for the NFL? I mean, what's the explanation otherwise? All the attention, for some reason, is on Mike McDaniel, the OC.
Oh, yeah.
But Harbaugh is the guy. And, you know, as far as that goes, before you answer, just a little history. I don't think we celebrate related to this enough what Dick Vermeul did. Dick Vermeul, for the kids out there, I'm sure Tony and Buddy don't remember Vermeul very much, or at least his first act in the NFL.
With the Eagles.
With the Eagles. He turns that team around, but he was super high strung, and he burnt out, and he retired at 83. Then he goes off into the booth, not for, like, five years or anything. For 14 years, he's off in the booth. Then he comes back, and he goes to the St. Louis Rams, which is a weird thing. The further away we get from the Rams having played in St. Louis, the weirder that's going to sound, too. So he goes 5-11 in '97, 4-12 in '98. He would have been fired if it were 20-20. You know, in this day and age, he wouldn't have made it to year three.
In year three, Kurt Warner arrives 13-3.
But you're leaving out the most important part. They signed Trent Green to be the quarterback, and he tore his ACL in the first preseason game, and he cried after the game to the media in the press conference. And then Kurt Warner won the Super Bowl. It's one of the greatest weekends.
Yeah, Rodney Harrison, one of the all-time cheap shots by Rodney Harrison and why he doesn't belong in the Hall of Fame. Trent Green, I walked his future bride down the aisle at somebody else's wedding way back when. So I know what Trent Green walked through.
It's in a Halloween-themed wedding or no?
Yeah, Moseley.
But anyway, yeah, it was not. But bottom line is, man did the Chargers stink what gives here. Kostos, do you have any thoughts on why?
I think you nailed it. First, well, there's two things. The first is Justin Herbert. Is he, and maybe you could say Daniel Jones is the only one, out of quarterbacks that began—so, like, Joe Fignano for the Ravens doesn't count.
Right.
Quarterbacks that began the season as their team's starting quarterback. Is Justin Herbert the worst starting quarterback in football right now?
Yes.
I think the answer to the question is yes. They should bench him for at least a game. They should sit him down, and Trey Lance should play. He is abysmal. And yes, the situation around him is terrible. The line stinks. Mike McDaniel stinks. They don't have good receivers. They can't run the ball. That's all true. Also, he is making throws, interceptions that gets other quarterbacks benched. Brain-dead throws that a player—we've seen him be great. This isn't like he sucked his whole career, and it's not a—this isn't Nathan Peterman. We've seen Herbert be great.
So he's playing terribly. And the second thing to your point, Dave, everyone wants to kill Mike McDaniel. He deserves to be killed. He's done a terrible job. At what point do we hold Jim Harbaugh accountable?
It's very strange, right, Tony? Why is there no noise about Jim Harbaugh, and all the focus is on the dork from Miami?
It is odd because I think Jim is still in the Michigan mindset where I'm going to go out and recruit guys that are just bigger, stronger, and faster than other teams that I play with in my conference.
You can't cheat now.
Get to the NFL, and you could cheat by advanced scouting and all that jazz. But when you get to the NFL, everybody's bigger, stronger, faster. You can't go find the guy in Iowa who nobody's ever heard of who's 6'8" and a mauler at 365 pounds to play left tackle. Like, that doesn't exist anymore. You got what you got, and you tied yourself to a guy who's an anchor in the ocean. Let me read you guys some stats here. Through seven games, they're 0-7, and their offense ranks in the bottom third of all of these categories: points, touchdowns, turnovers, efficiency, yards per play, red zone drives, fumbles, interceptions, sacks, pass block win rate, pressure percentage, and total QBR.
They are bottom three in every single one of those statistical categories.
And if you want to focus on Herbert in terms of who the worst quarterback in the league is this year, if you go by quarterback rating, the only other full-time starting quarterback that's lower than Herbert is Daniel Jones. Every other guy below them is Bajent, Daniels, the kid from Washington whose last name I can't pronounce, Coopera, Fignano, and Strand. Those are the guys that are below.
Guys that don't play.
Yes. Backup quarterbacks are the only guys below Daniel Jones and Bajent Herbert.
Who I do like, Kostos, relatively speaking, is Malik Willis. I told you he was going to be a tough read. I said that all through the summertime, that it's going to be impossible to assess what he's doing when you know that the design is for the team to lose games. They're not putting any—the one weapon he had was A-chan, and he's been gone for six weeks at least at this point. I mean, I think Malik Willis is better. I don't know. Cam Ward might be the answer to your question, who's worse than Justin Herbert.
Cam Ward played better against Cincinnati than Justin Herbert's played in any game this season.
Yep.
Also, the Titans have won a game. The Chargers haven't won one.
Who's going to get the number one pick?
Okay. So I asked some people that are smarter than me when it comes to betting last night because I thought it was interesting. If the Chargers played the Dolphins on a neutral field, what would the line of the game be? So the Chargers would be favored, but by less than three.
Three and a half?
No, less than three. If you gave me Chargers three and a half on a neutral, I would bet the shit out of Miami. Wouldn't even think twice about it. And I think Miami would beat them. I wouldn't be shocked if the Chargers got the first overall pick. And Dave, if that happens, we don't have to mince words. Amongst coaches with not bad coaches, coaches with expectations, legitimate Super Bowl aspirations, this will be the worst single-season coaching job in the history of the National Football League.
Well, easily.
Authored by Jim Harbaugh here. Number one. And you know what? Can I say this also? We are a soft society, Dave. And you know what? You strike me as a soft dad. You strike me as someone who's soft. Participation. You know what it means? It means we love participation trophy culture, right? Where all Jim Harbaugh wants to do is pray. Justin Herbert's the greatest quarterback ever. Like, "Hey, coach, we watch him urinate down his leg in these playoff games." Like, you don't have to say he's the greatest when we all know he's not. But that's all he wants to do. That's all. Because we're in a soft society. Justin Herbert's the best.
He literally said this off-season, "Justin Herbert's going to be the greatest quarterback ever." What are you watching, dude? How about some tough love? How about you tell him, "You're not good enough"? What happened to that, Dave?
I wish I could agree with this, but somehow I caught strays in your thing. I don't know what that has anything to do with me. I'll tell you what I'm doing. I must be dad in the right way because my boys are back-to-back champion, the.
God bless them.
They're on their way to the playoffs. The next level, college football. We have to make some time for that. UCLA is now the only good team in college football, apparently. The victory bell game, by the way, and did I say beware of the Trojans in that spot there and what that could do to the entire college football landscape the rest of the way? The victory bell game.
You picked against Ohio State with their backup quarterback. You're such a genius.
Yeah, that was pretty good.
Congratulations.
Did you see anybody else do that?
Well, it really went out on a lend.
Well, to be fair, buddy.
A lot of people did like Ohio State in the game, even with Mufehe starting. To be fair to Dave.
That's right. Yeah. Let them now be like your grandmother and sit quiet in the back of the crowd. But Kostos, the victory bell game could be huge. I could absolutely see USC beating Indiana. And if they do, they're kind of in play for the tournament themselves, weirdly. And then that game is massive because I don't know what's—I think UCLA could stumble anywhere along the way. There would be no weekend that I would be stunned to hear the Bruins lost a game. So anyway, we'll make time for that.
You know what? Let's move on.

Let's get to the consequential games of the NFL in week eight, and let's talk about what is probably going to—I mean, probably signals the end of the Ravens season, if in fact Lamar Jackson's out for the rest of the year, and they don't have some rabbit to pull out of the hat to play a quarterback. How about that Ravens and Bills game? I'm almost mad about it, Kostos, that Lamar got hurt as early on in the game as he did, because I think that result would have been the same, and then I would be patting myself on the back for being right.
I forecasted a double-digit Buffalo win in that one, and I think it would have happened even if Lamar had been on the field because the fact of the matter is, Eric DaCosta has really put together a mediocre to poor roster. How say you?
Well, I think a lot of the blue-chip players have really fallen short of expectations this year, many of them on defense, right, with Hamilton and Wiggins and Humphrey. Hendrickson's been a boss. Namdi Maduekwe hasn't given you what you thought. Roquan Smith certainly. And it does look like father time has finally gotten the best of Derrick Henry. I'll tell you what, a great job by Derrick Henry stiff-arming father time as long as he did, but it looks like that has finally happened. Look, I don't know if there's a strong Buffalo take out of the game. They beat the third-string quarterback. They beat them badly.
For me, with the Ravens, Dave, like, yes, season's over. They're going to get annihilated by the Jaguars on Thursday night. Fignano's going to have to start in the game. Jacksonville should win the game by double digits. But you said something earlier, and I actually think you're going to be right on it. I think Lamar's probably played his last down as a Raven. He has, by virtue of the contract that he—and by the way, everyone killed him for it, right, because he represents himself. He doesn't have an agent. His cap hit for next year is scheduled to be $84 million. So unless the Ravens extend him and get that number down, he's going to play on an $84 million number.
He has a no-trade clause, and they can't tag him. There's a no-tag clause in the contract. So if you're Baltimore, you can either extend him—he's going to be 30 in January—or you let him play out the final year of the deal, and he's bouncing and going somewhere else. He will be a free agent, and another team's going to want to sign him.
I agree.
So 51% he's gone? 51%?
I think the pushback on that is to devil's damnish, check it just a little bit, or at least Andrew Hawkins did this on last week's episode before the game when I was laying out worst-case scenarios for the Ravens that are now coming true and how. I didn't anticipate broken thumb or whatever specifically is the injury for Lamar. But the Ravens are kind of jammed up, though, at this point because the alternative is the abyss. You don't want to be one of those teams that's looking for the answer at quarterback.
They know they kind of sort of have it. It's at best frustrating, though, at this point, and at worst, it's just a lost cause. But it kind of feels better than the crapshoot of, "Let's see if we can get somebody else to play that position." And it also, you talk about worst coaching job in a single season and all of that. But imagine, we talk about Merino, and I take Don Shulel at a task for wasting a lot of Merino's career with the way he built the roster around him. But this is on the short list, what the Ravens have done with Lamar Jackson.
And you can point at Lamar for not coming up big in some big spots in January and all of that. But ultimately, over the course of time, it has to fall in the franchise's lap, right, Tony?
I think that we have one more year of Lamar Jackson in Baltimore. Nick, I like all the stuff that you said. The cap hit is the biggest thing, right? $84 million. I don't think we've ever seen that big of a cap hit in one single season. It's insane. Kudos to him. No trade clause. He's got all the things to protect himself from.
And no tag.
And no tag.
They can't tag him.
They can't do anything to him. He's either going to play, like you said, and leave, or they got to extend him, get that money down, and try to maybe make a move that'll be better for the team accepting Lamar Jackson with that number down. But I think that they had something in that first game against Indianapolis where we saw everybody healthy on the same page in Declan Doyle's system where he said, "Oh, wait a second. The Ravens might win the Super Bowl." Like, Zay Flowers was 150 yards in the first half. Lamar was dropping dimes all over the place. The offense was innovative, playing within structure, playing out of structure.
This was the moment for the Ravens. Now they see that. They had that little glimpse. He gets hurt twice, and now the season's over. I almost feel like they have the catnip of, "Man, if we have one season where everybody's healthy, maybe we can make a run on the final year of this deal."
Yeah, but I'm with Kostos, though. Time is running out on Derrick Henry. We talked about that all off-season too, that at some point, the bill was going to come due for all the wear and tear that he's put his body through. He can be the biggest guy in the field, and eventually, it's going to catch up with all those guys. Yeah, man. I could see them trying to talk themselves into a do-over in 2027, but Lamar may want to be gone. He may want to turn to the page at this point himself.
All right, let's move on to another game here and talk about the Vikings and the Lions. And me almost being right, Brian Flores flopped, though. He had a chance to silence the Lions. A shout-out, obviously, to Jack Campbell. Obviously, I don't mean to be glib about that. That's grim stuff looking at that. I don't know how these guys rally the way they do when they watch a guy who's not their teammate. It's their buddy. It's their pal on the ground like that. I'm always amazed by that, how these guys are wired so differently. I remember when Shazier got hurt in Cincinnati and Ike Taylor, late to the Pittsburgh Steelers, telling me in that moment, he's like, "Oh, you think the Steelers aren't going to win this game?
They definitely are." I said, "How do you focus after something like that happens?" And he said, "You just flip a switch for the next 90 minutes or two hours, and then you become human again." And I guess that's what the Lions did. Either way, in football terms, for what it matters, a tremendous rally, Kostos. How say you?
Yeah. I don't look at it as Brian Flores had a chance to win the game. I look at it as they allowed 19 points, and you have to win the game when you allow 19 points. Detroit's defense is good. It's not that good. It's another failure by Kyler Murray and this Vikings offense. And I looked this up this morning, and people can bitch and moan about AI, but it makes stuff like this really easy to find. So in the history of six-and-one teams in the NFL, the team that has scored the least amount of points that has started six-and-one is the 2026 Minnesota Vikings. I think we've reached a point, Dave, and I bet the Vikings before the year to win the division.
I'm not a hater. I'm a short king like Kyler Murray. I want it to work. But we have to acknowledge that this hasn't gone well. And I think the Vikings, Dave, need to take the lesson of another team that wore purple, that had championship defense and a struggling offense, the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, who were six-and-four when they made the switch from Tony Banks to Trent Dilfer and didn't lose another game the rest of the season. The Vikings might be six-and-one, but I think they will lose to the Bills next Monday night. I think they will lose in Lambeau to the Packers, and I think they will lose in Mexico City to the Niners heading into their bye.
They will be six-and-four. If I'm Kevin O'Connell, I'm not waiting for six-and-four. You have two options. One, you move to Carson Wentz. I think he was unquestionably the better option right now than Kyler. And the other would be.
J.J. McCarthy.
When I say this name.
James Winston.
Ask yourself this question. If this quarterback started yesterday for the Vikings, do they win the game easily? Call the Raiders and make a Godfather offer for Kirk Cousins and bring him back to Minnesota.
Yeah. I like that a lot, man. It's a good take. I like that a lot.
Tony, how say you? What was your big takeaway or takeaways from Lions-Vikes? Vikes had it right there.
Right there, and to Nick's point, it's an abject failure from KOC and from Kyler Murray. We've been told all year, "Wait, it's going to come around. He's just getting ready in this offense." No, no, no. We've seen the throws. He hasn't made enough of them. Justin Jefferson throwing his helmet on the sidelines. He's pissed off. He knows, "Hey, I'm open. Throw me the ball." And for whatever reason, Kyler Murray's hesitancy to get the ball downfield outside of the Jordan Addison long play, it's evident, right? We know what Kyler Murray is. He's a guy that wants to play out of structure and then try to make something happen.
This is not the offense for it. KOC is not going to relinquish that. You have to play within what he's telling you, Kyler Murray, and you're just afraid to. My biggest thing is on the other side of the ball, we played strength versus strength. The Vikings blitz had an almost 90% clip.
It's insane.
Which I told you.
Which I told you before the game.
You did.
Flores was not doing that a lot last year. He reduced the blitzing percentage against the Lions last year. So I guess probably he is through Petsing. He figured Petsing's assuming, "I'm going to blitz a ton," or, "I'm not going to blitz a lot." So now I am going to blitz a lot, and he did, and Jared Goff responded.
And what did I tell you was going to be the key to the game on Thursday? It was going to be Jameer Gibbs in that running game of running at the blitzes. And I don't know if we could put it on screen here. I took some screenshots of some of the formations, full house and otherwise, that Drew Petzig and the entire offensive staff is doing. Look at this full house formation where you got three tight ends, but two in the backfield, right, leading as blockers whenever the blitz would show up on their side. And they ran this to tremendous success. Jameer Gibbs, over 150 yards on the ground.
This is the way to beat that offense. You match strength with strength, and you run the ball. And right now, they just gave him the blueprint. Jared Goff was great on the blitz, locked in with Williams, with Omar Rasheem Brown. Did you see? Also, let's see if you pull up the CFL play. Dave, I thought of you when I saw this. Look at him, 15 yards behind the line of scrimmage. What if I told you, if you didn't watch the game like Buddy didn't, this was a first down throw to Oman Rasheem Brown. I mean, they're doing stuff on offense right now that Ben Johnson's like, "Damn, I wish I could have done that."
And yeah, the thing that's going to happen, same thing as we've talked about with the Miami Hurricanes, offensive player of the year. Goff is, again, having a sneaky, really good year, but Jameer Gibbs is the star. He's the strawster in that drink. But Goff's been dynamite as well, and they are now relevant despite my concerns going into the season. I hate that the screen grabs that you had from Sunday, week eight, are from that game because that was the one ugly uniform game that we had. Tennessee and Cincinnati was glorious. I even liked them Jags get-ups, the.
The rivalry ones?
Yeah. Those look good. Browns and Steelers was grand. Eagles and Commies was good. The Gold Pants are the way to go. Pats and Dolphins wasn't too bad. Let's jump in on that Browns and Steelers game. I know it's a story as old as time that the Steelers beat the Browns at home, but this was a different kind of a win. They really physically beat up a team. And keep in mind that they had Hall and Grambeck did the Browns, which they didn't have when the Steelers paid a visit to Cleveland a month ago.
What I told you, the best thing that the football gods gifted the Steelers after that Browns loss was a four-game stretch that they should go 4-0. And they did it. Mission accomplished. Now they get the bye. They come out again against Cincinnati. And I think that really is going to go a long way towards settling the hash of the AFC North. Kostos, how say you?
Yeah. Two things on this. Number one, I think the Steelers' fortunes changed this year when they changed the right side of their offensive line. And maybe they should be thanking their lucky stars that the Eagles jumped them to take Mekhi Lemon in the first rounds of the draft. Max Ohanichar has been tremendous. This offensive line has been great. And for as well as Aaron Rodgers has played, and he has played well, it's been this run game, the one-two punch of Jalen Warren and Rico Dowdle that's been exceptional for the Steelers. And coming into the year, Dave, I'll take the L on this because I thought the Steelers' upside was to be what it's been for much of the end of the Mike Tomlin era.
Make the playoffs, get vaporized on wildcard weekends. And I think we've seen enough through eight games now with Pittsburgh to suggest that it would not be crazy for them to win one or even two games in the AFC playoffs, which I did not think was possible coming into the year. And just on the Browns, Deshaun Watson doesn't have it. He's terrible. The fact that they were five and two entering yesterday, to me, is a credit to Todd Monkin. I think the Wheels are coming off in Cleveland. I think they're going to lose on Sunday against the New Orleans Saints. And I think maybe a month from now, people are going to be calling for Shadur Sanders to play in Cleveland.
It might start before that. Yeah, it's about balance. That's the only way Watson's going to thrive in the NFL at this point is if you have a run game. And that's what I pointed to. I can be wrong about 31 other teams. Nobody is more on the ball about the Pittsburgh Steelers than your old pal Dave is. What I say goes. And man, I told you about the line of scrimmage. The strawster in the drink in Pittsburgh is Andy Weidel, who has loaded up since he's been there, the assistant GM at the line of scrimmage, both sides.
Nobody's running on Pittsburgh right now, and they are trucking teams. And the Browns are wired to stuff the run, and it was no matter. The interior of that line opened up all day long, Rico Dowdle as well as Jalen Warren. And I'm kind of with you. I do think the limiting factor at this point, Rogers is fine. I don't think he's a great virtue. I don't think he's a high-end quarterback at this point, but he is limited by the pass catchers he has out there, and specifically DK Metcalfy.
Well, could DK catch the ball?
Is an atrocity. And there are some receivers allegedly out there, including Gary Wilson. That would change the prospects for January. Tony, how say you with these Steelers?
You guys bury the lead, man. The most unstoppable force in the NFL is sitting there, standing there at all six foot five, 300 and some odd pounds. Darnold Washington, ladies and gentlemen, leads the league, I feel like, in yards after catching the ball.
Well, he's six foot seven. He's six foot seven. We don't want to short-change Darnold Washington.
My bad. My bad. Can't short-change him. He's bigger than the left tackle. But the fact that he's running around in secondaries and just bulldozing people and just running through, Dave, how do you not fall in love with number 80?
This stat line is insane. Three catches for 94 yards.
And he almost got the touchdown too, Dave. He missed him a foot and a half.
Listen, he's a ton of fun. Friar Moot is having a great bounce-back season after being ignored pretty much for all of 2025. I like most everything about this team. Obviously, I think I wish they had I wish they still had Joey Porter Jr. on the back end for matchups like they have upcoming against the Bengals. I think they need another pass catcher to open up the offense a little bit. But yeah, they're ahead of what I thought they would be. But I did say before the season, 10 and 7, and I think that's about where they're going to land.
I do want to talk about the Broncos quickly, though. But LeBad Beer is brewed for the chirps, the salty jabs in your group, chat Hall of Fame. And for that one friend who hasn't changed his fantasy football team since 2019, and of course, that guy's name is Kevin, time for the LeBat roast and toast. We at LeBat know a thing or two about friendly rivalries born in Canada, brewed in the US, united by the sacred art of trash talk because the best kinds of friendships come with nicknames you didn't approve, stories you can't escape, and just enough roasting to keep things honest.
So when your team is staring down third and long, crack a cold one, roast responsibly, and give a toast to the people who give you the hardest time. LeBat brewed for the toast, and Kostos has given me a hard time. But that defense for the Broncos maybe didn't make it real tough all day long on the Chiefs, but they did specifically for all the celebration that J.J. Watt was trying to mount for Kenneth Walker. That was the difference in the game is that Kenneth Walker didn't have the sort of game he had been having for the first six weeks of the season, right, Kostos?
That's exactly right. I think the Seahawks laid that blueprint out last week for how to slow down this Kansas City offense. Do you want me to give you a thought on Kansas City or Dave?
I'd like you to share whatever you feel is important.
All right. Kansas City, I think the Eagles broke this current version of the Chiefs in Super Bowl 59. Since that ass-kicking in the Super Bowl, the Chiefs in the AFC Championship game that year against Buffalo beat them 32-29, one-score game. Since then, in one-score games, Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs in games that he has started are three and eight. Three and eight for the great Patrick Mahomes.
Wow.
Couldn't get one. And look, I get why the Chiefs don't want to sneak it with Mahomes because he got hurt in 2019 on a quarterback sneak. Andy Reid knows that Justin Fields is there, right, on the sideline. Why is Justin Fields not coming in on second goal to sneak three times to win the game? I think Andy's getting way too cute. They can't get a yard when it matters. I feel like the Eagles broke this current iteration of the Kansas City Chiefs. And for the Broncos, we told you Mahomes is three and eight since that AFC Championship game in one-score games. In his last 16 one-score games that he has started in, Bonix is 16 and 0.
That can't last.
And it doesn't.
That can't last, right?
But here's the thing, right?
But it's season's worth of data.
It's insane.
But it's literally season's worth of data.
It's crazy to me. And they beat the Bills in the divisional round. He won a playoff game against Josh Allen in a close one-score game. The game went to overtime. And the thing about it that's crazy is we watch Bonix for 55 minutes on Sundays, and he's terrible. And then for five minutes, he turns into Montana. Dave Dimachek, as a Giants fan, it kills me to say this. Is Bonix a more athletic Eli Manning?
Ha. Well, or is he a less athletic Tim Tebow, who has a better arm? I understand the skepticism that exists around Kyler Murray because he's never done it. Bonix would have been in the Super Bowl if not for snapping the ankle at the end of that game.
And how differently would we view the Broncos if that were true?
Of course, right. I told you the one thing I was right about is, "Stop worrying so much about this Broncos offense." And now Jonah Coleman seems to take it to another level. And here comes Jalen Waddle a little bit making some plays in big spots. I think the Broncos are right as rain, and the race for that division is on now. Man, I could go on and on all day, but let's get into the DeLorean real quick here before we say goodbye. Let's jump ahead to, I don't know, like 2:00 AM Tuesday. Nick Kostos, what did you think of Monday Night Football?
I think that Jadarion Price and Zach Charbonnet and Quinton Nelson formed the Seahawks' run game that we expected coming into the year. They have balance on offense, and the Seahawks beat the Chicago Bears on Monday Night Football and covered the spread.
Tony, is that right? Maybe my reception wasn't that good. How say you?
No, he's absolutely right. JSN just doing whatever he wants, staying on pace for a 2,000-yard season, another buck 50 in a score. I'm very good at the DeLorean. I see clearly, guys, buck 50 in a score for JSN, Sam Darnold, and the Seahawks. The death has been prematurely stated. Okay? Seahawks are a very big force in the NFC.
Buddy, you saw it that way?
No, I didn't actually. The Bears had to keep pace in the NFC North, and they did it with another resounding win at home over a good team. I think the Bears kind of finally announced themselves as true contenders in the NFC. We're all trying to start to buy in, right? Jeffrey Simmons looks like he's going to be a great addition for them. And Caleb Williams just keeps finding ways, keeps playing as well as we've seen him play all year. I've got the Bears.
I think Lolo is talking too much in your ear and distracting you. Is your grandmother, by the way, that pole vaulter? Remember that picture about 10 years ago, Lolo, whatever her name was?
Lolo Jones?
It's Lolo Jones' buddy's grandmother.
Is Lolo Jones the Olympian? My grandmother? No. Lolo Jones is not.
No, there was a bounce.
No.
Not. Okay. I think you, like I say, had bad reception there, buddy. I'm with the other fellows. I think Sam Darnold had a nice get-right game up there in Chicago, and the Seahawks are officially back and will be back on Thursday at around noon-ish or whenever the Le Batard Show ends. They're getting right all week on that show for the Convicts versus the Catholics game. We'll get you right for all of NFL Week 9 and for the great college football slate.
Really a dandy one. Great stuff from you today, Kostos. Tony, buddy, Gino, and you, my fellow football American, thanks so much. It's been a thin slice of heaven.

What in the ever-living hell just happened? Our best guess is we’ll look back on this week as the wildest week of the 2026 season. Think about it: Baker Mayfield won a game against his arch-nemesis Kevin Stefanski without completing a single pass. That’s the first time a team has blanked a team solely on the ground since the Steelers beat the Bears in 1945. Then Gardner Minshew II pulled up like Aragorn in jorts to beat the Cowboys in Texas. Somewhere Mike Leach is smiling down from above. And we haven’t even gotten to the Ravens dying in Buffalo, the Broncos outsmarting Andy Reid at the goal line, and the Lions pulling out some Canadian Football League moves to beat the Vikings. Absolute bonkers week. Ten-Day Tony and our NIL signee Nick Kostos are here to get it all on record.
