This episode of The Dan Le Batard Show covers the Chicago Bears' rise under quarterback Caleb Williams, including their trade for defensive tackle Jeffrey Simmons and whether the team can win a Super Bowl this year. The hosts and guests debate Williams' mouthpiece habits and arm talent, compare Ben Johnson's coaching decisions, and look at the Bears' deep group of skill players.
The conversation then turns to restaurant closures in South Florida, food delivery apps and changing dining habits. Listeners will hear competing views on which NFL teams are truly complete and on whether delivery apps or affordability are driving restaurants out of business.

So I think most people will agree with what I'm about to say, even though it represents a new football universe. The most balanced and best teams in the NFL are the Chicago Bears and the Jacksonville Jags. Now, it doesn't mean that's where we're going to be at the end of the season, because people get hurt, and the Jags already are getting hurt. Because the Jags are great at stopping the run. Nobody can run for 50 yards against them. They just lost a defensive tackle for the year. They've lost their left tackle for the year.
But what the Bears did to the Seahawks last night? No one's done to the Seahawks in two years. You saw what the Seahawks just made Kansas City look like when they went in there. Caleb Williams has arrived, has announced himself. He's as good as anybody, not named Josh Allen, in the league. Those skill positions for the Bears are tremendous. That offensive line is exceptional, and they ransacked Seattle. Seattle only plays close games the last two years. That doesn't happen to them. Sometimes a team will get 35 on them, the way Tampa and Baker Mayfield somehow did last year, but that game was close.
Seattle does not lose the way that they lost last night, and I think that Bears management traded for Jeffrey Simmons because they believe he's a final piece on a championship. Like, they're playing for right now on, they believe they're good enough to win the Super Bowl this year with that offense and that quarterback. And Jeffrey Simmons is somebody who can allow you to have a pass rush with four that they did not have before getting Jeffrey Simmons.
Immediately came into the lineup, immediately dominated, and made an impact on a defense that has struggled. So yes, he believes that they can win a Super Bowl now. You give up two first-round picks. That is a vote of confidence for Ben Johnson as your coach to say, "Yo, we have the coaching that puts us in a position to win a Super Bowl." That is a vote of confidence for Caleb Williams to say, "This kid has matured, and he is playing as good as we've ever imagined he would be when we drafted him first overall, and we built the entire farm on him well before the NFL draft."
And it also goes to show that for the rest of the team, you talked about it, the offensive line, the receivers, the running backs. There's a level of detail when you watch them play that feels like domination, no matter who they go against, when Caleb Williams is in the lineup.
It is the way to do it. Like, it's essentially been a perfect rebuild, what they've done. Now, obviously, it's aided by getting the number-one overall pick in the trade with Carolina, and it happens to be the same year that Caleb Williams comes out. But it's the perfect rebuild in the sense that they have built it young. And then with the Simmons trade, like, you'll see teams in the offseason, either they'll make a trade for a player like that, or they'll sign a player like that in free agency, hoping that that catapults you to that next level. No, no, no. The way to do it is what Chicago just did, where you see your like, the Dolphins tried to do that when they traded for Jalen Ramsey.
They tried to do that when they traded for Bradley Chubb. That's what they're doing here, where we're good, now we add, and now we give up the price and add the big piece.
Oh, but no, no, no, wait a minute, though. Whatever Jalen Ramsey and Bradley Chubb were for a team that would not win a playoff game, they gave up a haul to get a player who fixes their defensive line problems, because he makes everyone out there better on defense, because they gave up what they gave up the kind of thing that you're going to give up to get a quarterback for a defensive tackle. Because this is a special this is a special defensive tackle who has been playing the kind of football that Hawk was playing in negative 14-degree weather, where it was the Titans were playing football that didn't matter at all.
And he gets to come in with the ego of, "No, they think I'm the they think I'm the missing piece." And then he plays in a primetime game, and you immediately see that he makes Sweat better, that he makes everybody better, because you cannot allow the pressure to come up the middle on Darnold. You can't have it.
And it's a style of play that's going to work in home playoff games in Chicago.
Yeah. I mean, it'll work in away playoff games in Tampa Bay. It'll work on a train. It'll work on a plane. Would it? Could it? On a I'm not familiar with the Dr. Suess.
Well, you shouldn't have gone down the path if you were.
Because I was there.
Let's talk there. He was so confident.
I was like, "This is simple. Just go down the Dr. Suess path. Plane, train, and then."
And automobiles.
Automobiles. That's a different thing.
I'm going to blow your mind right now. I'm going to blow your mind right now. It's not even Dr. Suess. It's Dr. Soyce. His name is not Dr. Suess.
No way. You're lying.
So you got everything wrong.
There's no way his name is Dr. Soyce.
You got everything wrong there, and you tried to do a poem that was fairly simple and for children, and you blew it.
It's not my finest moment. The point is, he's good.
Jeffrey Simmons is a little bit better than good. He is somebody who changes your defense, changes your team, and changes your championship chances. You guys did see, though, that before that game got away from Seattle, Chicago got really lucky with a delay-of-game penalty, where the delay-of-game penalty that they had on offense benefited them. They would have had third they had third and one, and they Swift gets tackled in the backfield for a four-yard loss because nobody can run against the Seattle defense.
And so it would have been fourth and five, but instead, it ended up being third and nine. And Chicago's not scared of third and nine because their skilled guys are great.
Well, you could drop a screen pass to Khelif Raymond, who takes it 42 yards to the three-yard line and runs.
That happened.
Really, it looked like he was running 200 miles an hour. It's like, "Nobody can stop this guy." Like, they have a play call for everything. And that's when you look at Ben Johnson. Hawk, were you watching the game last night when they had Caleb split left in slot on a trips? Handed it off to him on a dagger concept boot, where they had a dagger concept to the left. He was handed off. He came around and then, I think, fired to Luther Burden. But when you talk about the creativity of what Ben Johnson can do, and keeping Mike McDonald on his toes, saying, "All right, Caleb's trips left in the slot. Why is he here? What are they trying to do?"
And then run a dagger concept out of that. It's like, that's where the coaching has gotten offensively for Chicago. It's like, "All right, whatever chess move you have, we have one better."
Where you really messed up, Hawk, is that there is no plane in Green Eggs and Ham. There's just rain and train. And so that's what probably screwed you up. It definitely screwed me up, and I was trying to find the easy lane of rhyming words, that I know that there's multiple modes of transportation that rhyme with ane. And so you're right.
You could not find that easy lane.
I couldn't find it.
Roy, what did you look up back there that you can help Hawk with so he can do some more learning today?
So a lady by the name of Cathy Petras wrote a book about Dr. Soyce, and she says that is actually Dr. Soyce.
Dr. Suess? It was really supposed to be Dr. Soyce. And.
What?
Yeah. Is that weird? It's Dr. Soyce you read as a little kid?
What?
But he ended up going along with the public. That's another case. Everybody said it's Soyce, so he thought, "Okay, to hell with it. I'll call it Dr. Soyce too."
Really? That's stunning.
Yeah. But it was Dr. Soyce. His mom's maiden name was Soyce, and that's what he named it after.
Man, that is a mind-blowing right there. It wouldn't have worked as Dr. Soyce. I'll tell you that right now. I'm not buying that book.
Was that in July? When was that?
That was many years ago. It was about.
That was 2016.
It had to have been a July episode.
One month, though. I am curious.
It was about November.
About 10 years ago. Guys, we used to do that during football season all the time. Only when you guys got to all the microphones and loved talking about dagger concepts did we start covering football this way.
I did use that same concept, though, on my flag football team.
What?
It's unstoppable. Yeah, I had to hand off to a quarterback in flag football because then it gives him the.
Then he can run.
To run. Exactly.
Here's my greatest criticism of Caleb Williams, and I don't think it's a criticism anyone else is making.
Fingernail painting.
No, I wouldn't. Plenty of people were doing that.
What?
I will not criticize him for painting his fingernails. Once Shaq did it to his toenails, I'm like, "Everyone did it."
Oh, no.
Oh, no, no.
The thing about Caleb Williams that I keep noticing is that all he has his mouthpiece for is to chew on it. He constantly takes the snap with the mouthpiece out of his mouth, out of the corner of his mouth. He's playing all football without there's no reason for him to have the mouthpiece. He's not using it for protection. He's just doing it because he's got an oral fixation. Like, it's always out of.
Oh, no.
It's always he's running around. Look, but look. Look at that.
It's called motion, Dan.
Yeah, but he's scrambling, and that is there to protect his mouth, and all he's doing is chewing on it. He does audibles. He does everything with it at the side of his mouth.
It's called aura. Yeah, that's Kachuk's gimmick.
You loved it when Steph Curry did it.
Patrick Kane.
You had no complaints when Steph does that every single play.
Less violent sport.
Prove it.
It's not getting hit that hard.
I mean, he's not getting hit. They can't catch that guy. What does a mouthpiece even do? Answer that question right now. What does it do?
Protects your teeth.
If you're so mad about this, what do you think a mouthpiece does?
I don't believe I described myself as so mad about this.
You said, "I am."
You did bring it up.
Pissed.
I didn't say.
You said, "My one criticism."
My one criticism.
Can I go on the record and say, "You don't need to always have a criticism?" But.
What?
Good point.
But if you say your one criticism is the fact that he chews side mouthpieces, what does a mouthpiece do, and why does that make you so mad?
What I would rebut that with is to say, he's so hard to criticize in any other way that look at the criticism I have that is minuscule, that makes all of his other traits special by comparison, because he is the quarterback I would want in the league the most right now, over Joe Burrow or anybody other than Josh Allen. And when I say the Bears are the best and most complete team along with the Jags, I am saying that you've got two teams in the league that are complete, and you've gotten the Bills one team that has a quarterback, and that's what they've got.
Like, the Bills are going to try and get past the Jags and try to get past the Bears, but I believe it'll be Jags and Bears in the Super Bowl if those two teams stay healthy.
Why?
Because I believe they're just a good deal better than everybody that I've seen this year, Kansas City included.
They're the most complete teams. I would say they've played the most complete, the most consistently throughout the season. And Caleb is playing like he has some piss in his grits. It's not just the. Great throws. It's not just like the complete offense.
Piss in his grits? Is that good?
He does the piss in his that's a great thing, man.
That's good? It's good to play with piss in your grits?
Come on.
Yeah, because you're pissed. You're like, "Who pissed in my grits?"
Who pissed in my grits? You know? It's like when they took the fried chicken off the menu at Joe's Stone Crab, right? You could imagine what Roy was like.
They raised the price.
You could imagine what Roy felt like in the morning.
And Tony and Chris.
Of course. Of course. Of course. Of course. But specifically Roy, I can only imagine what that day was like for you. I mean, there is the ridiculous flooding of your backseat, which is like half of what you probably felt about Jones Stone Crab taking off the 895.
Jones. Jones. 95s.
Jones. Not Jones' Stone Crab.
It's totally different.
Jones. That's a rip-off. That's like McDowells and Coming to America.
We have no seeds.
Jones Stone Crab.
You have the Golden Arcs.
Golden Arcs.
The restaurant industry is hurting right now, right? If Joe's has to raise its prices on its cheapest item, it has to double the chicken. Look, it is really great chicken, and it was one of the great values in South Florida that you could go to Joe's and eat a meal for $10, and it was substantive. Can you look up some numbers for me on what's happening with the restaurant industry as Tony talks about affordability on a day that you should all get out and vote today?
Go do it.
People can't afford right now to go to restaurants, and so what ends up happening is restaurants are closing at an alarming rate because people all over the country and the world are trying to save money.
Except the issue is that the restaurants are less expensive than actually going to get groceries, because that's more expensive than eating out.
How does Uber Eats play into all this? Because I just spent like $21,000.
Price gouging, not only the restaurants, but the consumer. That's how they play into it.
Some regulation would be good.
Something.
They love taking forever to bring me my food.
I know. There's restaurants that aren't even real restaurants. They're just like in I would.
What? Food trucks?
I would reference The Last Dragon.
Cold Space Kitchens.
I don't think anybody here has seen The Last Dragon. I know Roy probably has. Have you seen The Last Dragon, Roy?
Yeah, I've seen it. Yeah.
Of course you've seen it. Anybody else seen The Last Dragon?
Show me off.
Raise a hand if you've seen The Last Dragon. No? No? No? Dan? Dan, that's why the hood rocks with you. And they do rock with you. Do you know the hood rocks with you?
I know they rock with my dad. I don't know that they rock with him.
They rock with him the utmost, but definitely you, because I was somewhere this week, and they were like, "Yo, tell Dan the hood's with him." I'm like, "Oh, okay. I'll make sure."
What an honor, Dan.
I'll make sure I pass the message. He tell it like it is. I'm like, "Yeah, sometimes."
Wait until they hear the mouthpiece take.
Yeah.
Can you default?
Someone has to tell Caleb Williams about the side mouthpiece.
Can you guys not notice this with Caleb Williams? There's no point in having the mouthpiece if all you're going to do is chew on it.
Dan, there's DBs that I've seen in college and pro that have two mouthpieces attached to their face mask.
Yeah.
Two mouthpieces. What do they do with that? Who knows? It doesn't matter.
The holidays should be about the people you love. Not mandatory work parties where I pretend to care about someone's kitchen renovation. Now's the time for those unexpected holiday side quests and enjoying a great-tasting light beer. Last year, mine was my cousin's garage, a Miller Lite, and a four-hour debate over the best Christmas movie. Dan would make it a segment, then argue the other side on purpose. Best night of the season. Tis Miller time! In that garage, I felt great. I took a sip. I looked around and thought, "Yeah, this was the right call."
Miller Lite is a taste you know you can depend on. Brewed for taste, it just hits different. The original light beer since 1975 and still iconic more than 50 years later. Miller Lite is great taste done right. Go to millerlite.com/dan to find delivery options near you. Or you can pick up some Miller Lite pretty much anywhere they sell beer. Tis Miller time! Celebrate responsibly. Miller Brewing Company, Milwaukee, Wisconsin, 96 calories and 3.2 carbs per 12 ounces. A season of chasing.

Dan Le Batard.
The hoodie is cap'n sloppy.
Jonathan Sassolo.
Is this Chum Bucket?
This is the Dan Le Batard Show.
It's about the swag.
Did you use your mouthpiece? Did you use it, or did you chew on it, or did you leave it hanging from the face mask?
I used it, and I chewed on it. I would go through mouthpieces like every week because by the time my nervous energy, I just chew and chew and chew. There are people that don't use a mouthpiece and only chew gum. So that's why, Jeremy, can you find out what a mouthpiece actually does on a football?
Yeah, you got it. Also, according to the NRA, roughly 33% to 42% of restaurant owners report their businesses are not currently profitable, the NRA obviously being the National Restaurant Association.
Oh, okay.
Got it.
More than what is going on here? Why do they care about the restaurant business?
What?
More than 7,500 restaurants have closed nationwide the first half of 2026.
Hawk brought up something, though, that I do the reason Bezos is so rich is because he capitalized on our laziness and convenience in general. And so I think part of it's affordability. I don't know if it would be DoorDash and Uber Eats, though, that is a greater responsibility for closing restaurants than what is happening in this country with people just can't afford things and therefore luxuries. One of the first luxuries that's going to go is the ability if you can make your own meal, even if grocery stores are unreasonably expensive right now, it is cheaper to buy in bulk and make your own meal than it is to eat at a restaurant.
If you had to guess, put it on the poll at Le Batard Show. Why are so many restaurants closing? Is it DoorDash and Uber Eats, or the convenience of that and people not going to restaurants? Or is it that we have basically a cost of living crisis in this country?
A third option, some restaurants are just bad and shouldn't have opened in the first place.
Wow.
Let's be honest.
Do you know this is a startling stat, but it's true. Restaurant business is notoriously hard. 80% of them close. Like, it's just really hard. That kind of success rate, what it weeds out in terms of survival of the fittest, only good restaurants are allowed to succeed because if 80% of them fail. And I am jarred by how many places in Miami I see that have boards on them that are empty, that used to be classic franchises because I see the affordability crisis that's happening in America when I drive down any street and just see a bunch of closed stores that used to be vibrant places.
I think it's just gotten so convenient to bring in. Like, it wasn't that long ago where the only food that you brought in, the only delivery was pizza and Chinese. That was it. Those were the takeout foods. Everything else, you had to go to the restaurant. Now, you could order in everything. Every restaurant.
But restaurants are making money off of these Uber Eats. They're making so much money.
I also think that part of the loneliness crisis in America is that people don't want to be around other people. They just simply don't want to be engaged with others. I think I told you guys the other day, I gave you the stat that in the last 50 years, people having people over to their home, family or friends for dinner in the last 50 years has gone down 70%, that people want to eat just with the people they already live with. They don't want anybody else in their house. We're just separating more and more from people.
So you have just an entirely different America and an entirely different dining room and an entirely different home than you used to have 50 years ago.
Not in a Cuban household. I invite the whole neighborhood. I tell everybody, "Come over under the cheeky hut." Hawk, you want to come over?
Nope.
See, that's his problem. I invited him.
I like to eat just with my family.
See, that's weird, man.
I'm going to get thousands of dollars on Uber Eats a year.
So, Zaz, you think it's convenience because once you give people the option of, "Hey, I'll just deliver everything to your house," you're going to end the malls. The malls are going to end if you're just Bezos is going to get richer than anyone else because he can figure out how to get it to you as a matter of convenience, and he is feeding on American, both laziness and convenience.
The outdoor mall has definitely suffered, right? I mean, as far as indoor malls, like the Aventura Mall was my mall of my childhood. I don't think that's suffering at all. I've seen what that looks like these days.
Drive-in over there.
It's like one of the best in the country. But the outdoor mall has definitely suffered because of all these deliveries.
You guys are big mall guys, huh?
Has the mall ended as a place where teenagers gather? Is that over as a place where teenagers?
I think so. My boys, that's never really been a thing. My boys were in high school. The hanging out at the mall has never really been a thing. It was a huge thing when I was a kid.
Oh, the Oasis back in the day?
Yeah.
What do you do at a mall now? There's no shopping, right? Like, I don't know. If you're a kid, you're like, "Hey, I'm ordering my own clothes."
There's a movie there to attach to the mall.
But no one's going to the movie theater.
You hang out at the food court.
Get the free handouts.
We have Netflix now.
We have HBO Max. Movie theaters are suffering.
I used to love going to the mall with kids. I don't know why they don't do it anymore.
That's weird.
Why?
We should.
I was a kid too.
Oh, okay.
You went yesterday.
I thought you were saying you used to love bringing your kids to the malls.
Yeah. I don't know where we were going with that, man.
I want to give you a couple of stats from last night's game, Hawk, and I want your analysis on these things, okay? That's the first time that the Seahawks have lost a game by five or more points since 2024 against Green Bay. That's 30 straight games without a five-plus point loss. It's the fourth longest streak of any team since 1970, and that includes the Mahomes Chiefs, Rogers Packers, Montana's 49ers. Like, that's a long history of teams not being as good as the Seahawks team is at keeping games close.
And then as it regards Jeffrey Simmons, because it can be hard to measure what a defensive tackle is doing sometimes. The Seahawks had 3.0 yards per play in the 48 plays Simmons was on the field. That included three sacks and an interception when he was on the field. In the eight plays he was off the field, Seahawks averaged 13 and a half yards per play.
That's worth two first-round picks.
That's worth two first-round picks and then some.
If he can keep that up on a consistent basis, because it's not just that. Like, the Seahawks are an incredible defense, and they met their match with Ben Johnson and Caleb Williams. Okay, that neutralizes that because that is how the Seahawks have won games, at least this year. And then when you go to the other side of the ball, a Seahawks offense that has been struggling all year, a new offensive coordinator in Scott Floory, who has been struggling to kind of recapture what Kubiak was doing there, and Sam Donner has been struggling. You add in Jeffrey Simmons, who you couldn't stop in any lane, on a plane, in the rain, on a train.
Now you have a performance like we've never seen in the last couple of years.
That's insane.
The Bears, it's hard for me to say. It doesn't come out of the mouth easily.
What?
They've got the best quarterback they've ever had. I'm going to say by leaps and bounds because Jay Cutler was the best they had before this, statistically. And I can make the argument that this is the best Bears team that I've seen since the '85 Bears that won the Super Bowl with Chip McMahon. I think I can make that argument in terms of balance because their offensive line is top five in the league. I think it's the best in the league, but it's top five in the league. And those skilled guys are extraordinary, but also, and this part is not a measurable this isn't something that I have empirical data for you on.
When Caleb Williams releases the ball, it looks prettier than anybody but Josh Allen in the entire league in terms of just throwing the football. Sam Darnold was inaccurate last night. He was pressured. He turned the ball over. When Caleb Williams throws the football, it looks prettier than anybody but Josh Allen. Tell me I'm wrong. Tell me better than Joe Burrow, better than anybody. And I'm not slighting Joe Burrow. I'm just telling you that when Caleb Williams and I don't think this is his ceiling either, Hawk.
I think he's still learning the position. He's still young enough that I believe we've seen what is the best of Joe Burrow, and it's plenty good. I've got no complaints about what it is, but we've seen what the best of that is. I don't believe we've seen the best of Caleb Williams yet.
Hawk, check me on this. I think Caleb Williams has the best fastball in the NFL for a quarterback. Like, if you need to get in a tight window and throw between the linebacker and the safety and put it exactly where it needs to be with speed, I think Caleb Williams has the best laser in the NFL.
I would agree with that. His arm strength is why we were so high on him. And it's not just arm strength. It is like there is like brute arm strength, and then there is your just ability to throw, like to know what trajectory to put it on and win, the softness to like kind of and that's what makes him special. The angles that he's able to do it, the platforms he's able to do it off of, I would almost argue that Josh Allen isn't exactly the arm talent that Caleb Williams. I think he has a better long ball than Caleb Williams.
I don't think, like holistically, again, the angles, the platforms Caleb Williams can throw from, he might be one of one in the league.
I think throwing the ball with air, Joe Burrow has the prettier long ball toss because when you throw it up, even if when he had Amani Hooker intercept the ball three times, I was like, "Oh, that's a great pass," and then it ended up being intercepted. But the way it looks coming out of his hand, two T. Higgins long, two Jamar Chase long, it's like, "Oh, that ball is special." When he's got like the Russell Wilson kind of moonshot, it just ends up in his receiver's hands.
That's a tough one. That's a tough one. I might actually go Joe Burrow better than both of them.
I'll tell you what. I give Ben Johnson a lot of credit too, not based on what he's doing with Chicago, but remember, he turned down the Washington job the year before he took the Chicago job. And that Washington job was Jaden Daniels was already there, right? Yeah, that was Jaden Daniels' rookie year. And he turned down that job and waited for a better opening, and you got Chicago. Like, it's pretty impressive.
Okay, but I think this is something that's worth noting, though, on what it is that you just said there because this is calculated by Ben Johnson when he's deciding. I have any number of options throughout the NFL. I can make my own choice. I think the year before that, he had is that the job you're talking about? He had a head coaching possibility. He said, "No, I'll stay the coordinator of the Lions because he knows what his job is contingent on." And when I talk about the Bears this way, this is the part I want you to understand because I think it went into Ben Johnson's choosing.
They have more ways to beat you than any team in the league. Like, it's more guys. It might be a dunze one day, but it might not be. Like, it's very often other guys. It might be Swift one day because they run the ball well because they're offensive line. So when Ben Johnson is making a career choice, he's tying himself to these skilled guys. And these skilled guys help make Caleb Williams be even better than he would already be if he were drowning, say, in Tennessee.
Like, what do you think Caleb Williams would look like right now in Tennessee? Because it wouldn't be this. It wouldn't look like this if Caleb Williams was with the Chargers, if he was with the Dolphins. Ben Johnson made a choice. If you believe Ben Johnson is actually smarter than everyone else and he's trying to decide his future on where can I have the most success that looks like the skilled guys I got with the Lions? Oh, I know where I'll go. Washington skilled guys are really good. Damishack was making fun of me on Washington skilled guys.
I like Washington skilled guys, but they're not Chicago's skilled guys. Like, he's choosing somewhere that he knows he's going to have success because he's going to have more success with that quarterback, that offense, and that offensive line, which looks a lot like Detroit's offensive line.
But I think for good coaches, Dan, I think you're right. But I think for good coaches, the reason why you feel so strongly about that offensive line and those skilled guys is because you have a head coach that you've given enough power to craft that as he sees fit. A dunze, again, Luther Burton is getting the majority of the talk because he is an incredible talent.
Oh, Loveland looks like a guy now too.
Loveland, absolutely. And then you have Kalief Raymond. He is not a guy that you're like, people are beating down the door to get Kalief Raymond as their number three, but he really is the glue of that receiving core. But the reason why they're so efficient, the reason why they are so good is because a good offensive mind harps on the detail that makes the job of everybody easier. So when you're watching Luther Burton, a dunze, Raymond, Loveland, you are seeing guys that are playing as fast as they possibly can because there's no thinking involved, and that's because of Ben Johnson's offense.

Ah, folks, listen up. You wouldn't want an offensive lineman to play wide receiver, would you? No, you wouldn't. You need the right person. You need the right equipment for the job. Dan Le Batard.
God, I would love to see that interaction. Lord, let there be a day.
Hey, Oprah.
Let there be a day. Oh, the color purple.
You like these glasses?
She would see these glasses. She'd be like, "This is someone I'll take a picture with." He looks sophisticated. I love Big Game, Not a Big Game.
Jonathan Sassolo.
She would say that to me. Instead of me having to go up to her and say, "I'm a big fan," she'd be like, "I love Big Deal, Not a Big Deal."
Yeah, huge fan of your work.
Yeah, one-time or two-time championship broadcaster?
Two, Oprah.
Two.
You think Oprah would say like, "Hey, you know about that book club?"
And I would say, "Yes, I do, Oprah. Yes, I do."
Have you seen Weapons?
But the kids.
This is the Dan Le Batard Show.
Jeremy, do me a favor here, please, just so that I can illustrate the point that I'm making. Each game this year, give me the guy for the Bears that has led in either receiving or if the running back has more yards that day than any of the receivers have. Give me how many different guys it is that the Bears can go to. The reason that I bring this up is go ahead and give me all the guys in the league that have better skilled guys. I know the Bengals are looked at as having the best one-two punch. Maybe you like Dallas's one-two punch.
I don't know whose one-two punch you like, but you just mentioned a whole bunch of people at the skilled positions, and I don't think a lot of teams have this to go with what I believe is a top five, maybe the best offensive line in the sport. Darnold was bothered the way that Caleb Williams was, and that Seattle defense is a championship defense. That Seattle defense doesn't allow 100-yard rushers, so that game was not going to be won by Swift. There are games that are going to be won by Swift. That was not going to be one of them.
Even though he scored the touchdowns, he wasn't going to go for 60 yards because they don't allow anybody to go for 60 yards.
I agree. I wouldn't take I'll kick it to Jeremy. Jeremy, what do you got for me?
In game one.
Pause this.
Swift with 124 rushing yards. Kalief Raymond had 84 receiving yards. Game two was the game in Minnesota where they lost 9-3. So Swift had 54 receiving yards, but that was in the middle of a monsoon.
That was Chicago. Yeah, that was in Chicago.
Yeah. Raymond, 90 receiving yards in game three. Kyle Manungai, 146 rushing yards in game four. Luther Burton with 47 receiving yards in game five. That was with Case Keenum at the helm. Then Luther Burton with 95 receiving yards against Atlanta. Luther Burton with 130 receiving yards against New England and Roma dunze last night with 87.
I'm guessing that most teams you can't do that with. I'm guessing that most teams you look up in Dallas and it's going to be CD Lamb just about every time. That it's going to be it's not going to it'll be either Jamar Chase or T. Higgins. It's not going to be four or five guys that you can go to, and the best of them is their quarterback. The very best of them is their quarterback. And I thought that's can you look up for me, Zaz, what it was that Ben Johnson turned down? Because he turned down a job with the Lions to stay as coordinator. Was that the Washington job, or was it another job?
I'm fairly certain it was Washington.
Washington. On the plane, I believe he turned it down. Like, they were like thought he was their head coach, and he was like, "Yeah, nah, I changed my mind."
And the crazy part about what we just said is in four of the five last games that they've played, Colston Loveland's had at least six catches and at least 57 yards in each one of those.
I want you guys to remember a couple of years ago when they were throwing to just Cole Comet and see how much has changed there with how vibrant Chicago is as a possibility. Give me the best Bears team. Rex Grossman made it to a Super Bowl that they lost. It was a bit of a mirage. They lost to Peyton Manning here in Miami. But that was the best Bears team, I think, since the one that won the Super Bowl for Ditka in 1985 and almost went undefeated.
I think this is the most complete Bears team I have seen since then. Any dispute? Any argument anywhere in the room? Are we talking about the best Bears team there's been in 40 years right now? The one that you watched last night.
Where were you at in '85? What were you doing in life?
I was here. I was about to graduate from high school.
Yeah?
I was a junior in high school.
What high school?
Shamanade. Shamanade High School.
Shamanade Madonna?
Well, it was just Shamanade then.
It was just the same one though.
Yeah, it was just but it was an all boys' school. When it became Shamanade Madonna, it became boys and girls. It explains all of my clumsiness.
That makes sense.
With girls throughout high school and college and much later as well because I did not know what I was doing around women.
In 2024, Ben Johnson declined a head coaching job with the Washington Commanders to stay with Detroit.
So the skilled guys he had in Detroit, you saw, right? Golf, I don't believe golf is Caleb Williams. When you guys talk about sort of what a quarterback looks like, golf can throw into some of those windows, Tony, but he does it the way Drew Brees does, where it's all flutter and accuracy. It's not holy bleep. Look at that guy's arm. That guy's got a laser of an arm. I don't know if you guys think that Caleb Williams announced himself last night, but beating the defending champions in their home in a way that they haven't been beaten since 2024, doing it that way against that defense that doesn't allow anything that made Patrick Mahomes not be able to get into the red zone a couple of weeks before that.
To me, Caleb Williams announced himself as a, "I want to be the best quarterback in the league. I'm not just another guy or a first-round pick or just the best Bears quarterback ever. I'm the guy who thinks I can come for Josh Allen's MVP trophy."
He's the leader right now for the MVP, and I think it's just because he played last. And it's funny because the quarterbacks you named are the four MVP candidates. It's Caleb, it's Joe Burrow, it's Josh Allen, and it's Jared Goff. Because Jared Goff is also playing really, really good football this year.
I think Jordan Love is just about as good, but I don't think that Jordan Love is getting that credit. Tony, you need to look at some of that pro-football focus stuff.
No, I like Jordan Love. I'm just saying, like, what he's doing is putting up a mirage of just throwing the ball deep, and we're looking at the numbers being like, "Oh my God, wow." It's no, because he has Christian Watson. He's got Matthew Golden. Other than that, you're looking around and you're like, "He's not really doing anything super special except finding guys deep."
Here's where we're going to tie this together. This is why Caleb Williams is leading in the MVP race because you're talking about Kalief Raymond and Roma dunze in conversations with Jameson Williams and Amon-Ra St. Brown, T. Higgins and Jamar Chase.
Golden and Watson.
Golden and Christian Watson. These are like the premier one-two punches of receivers. And even still, as good as the Bears are, you can keep going and they still wouldn't be in that tier of receiving core, but they're operating at such a high rate because Caleb Williams is doing a great job of making sure the number one receiver is the guy that's open.
Dan, it looks like you're the most famous non-athlete to graduate from Shamanade Madonna. We've got you. We've got Chris Myers. There's Cyrus Baluki, who was the drummer for New Found Glory.
Oh, Cyrus Baluki.
I mean, that's close. New Found Glory, that's a good band.
Damn good band.
Athletes-wise, I mean, he's not close. I mean, even Jeremiah Smith already blows you out of the water.
What?
Yeah, he does, Dan. My son is heavily considering Shamanade Madonna. It's down to like four schools, man.
We were always, while I was there, really, really bad at sports, and then we became state champions when we just started getting the black kids from all over, Ringers. That's what happened. They just.
Just the black kids?
I mean, that's what happened.
You just integrated the school, and then all of a sudden you're winning. I think there's a movie about that. It's called Remember the Titans. What happens is there's a school that is segregated.
Did the coach make them, like, get off the bus and sit with someone they're going to be rooming with?
They didn't room with another school.
Yeah, it was a final play in 80-yard end-of-round for the championship.
There was a liability at corner. I remember the situation that they had, like, some substitution things going on, but they integrated the team. Immediately state championship.
You know about that, Sunshine?
Immediately state championship.
Donald Fayzon.
Madonna. Shamanade Madonna is I mean, they were like 40 years old.
I know. You want to.
Yeah. You should watch that movie.
Do you remember how Remember the Titans ended? Because Zazlo just gave you what is the fatal flaw of that Denzel Washington vehicle. You cannot.
You're a Hall of Fame of my book. You're a Hall of Fame of my book.
Wow, goosebumps.
You can't trick the legendary championship-winning coach on the other sideline at the end of the game with a double reverse that goes for 80 yards with the quarterback blocking the attack.
Dan, what year was it, Dan? We're taking context of the 2000s football and taking it back to 1965 or wherever they were. They had never seen a double end-of-round pick.
You make sure they remember.
With a backside Georgia reverse.
Right.
Like, they like to pin it on you. You hear me? I could quote so many lines from that movie.
Remember.
That's good.
The night they played the Titans.
You want to talk about leadership, right? You're the captain, right? Captain's supposed to be the leader, right? Then why don't you tell your white buddies to block for Red better? Because they have not blocked for him or for Bloodniggle, and you know it.
Wow.
Team. Nobody plays. Yourself included. And I'm supposed to wear myself out for the team?
Wow.
What team?
Holy shit.
No, no. What I'm going to do is I'm going to worry about me, and I'm going to get mine.
See.
That's the worst attitude I'd ever heard.
Bravo.
Attitude reflects leadership.
Captain.
Wow.
You got a future kid. This is how we discovered Shannon Sharp. Let's play the sound of get the sound of Shannon Sharp for me. We discovered Shannon Sharp around here, and then he was going to review movies for us. Unfortunately, he only knew a few good men when we started asking him about other movies. He didn't know anything about.
Flattened out a little bit.
But a few good men he had nailed, but this is how I was reminded of Shannon Sharp being on our show, and we were reviewing movies with him, and then his movie career ended with our show because he asked for money for the movie reviews.
You live in a world that has walls, and these walls have to be guarded by men with guns. Who's going to do it? You. You, Lieutenant Weinberg. I have a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You reap for Santiago. You curse for me. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. Santiago's death while tragic probably saved lives. In my opinion, grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saved lives. You don't want the truth to be found in places at parties. You don't talk about it. You want me on that wall. You need me on that wall.
We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words on the backbone of a lifetime spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man that rises and sleeps under the blanket of freedom that I provide and then questions the manner in which I provide it.
