Episode summary

This episode of The MeidasTouch Podcast looks at how Canadian leaders from federal and provincial governments and several political parties responded to Donald Trump's midterm defeat. Host Ben Meiselas plays clips from Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Prime Minister Carney, NDP former MP Charlie Angus, the EU special envoy, a former US ambassador to Canada and trade representative Dominique LeBlanc.

Listeners hear how these speakers link the results to tariffs, the cost of living and trade negotiations, and how some describe Canada moving closer to the European Union. Meiselas adds his own sharply critical commentary on Trump, and the episode also includes his reaction to a video featuring Jake Paul and JD Vance.

Canadian leaders are celebrating Donald Trump's demise in the midterm elections from all political parties in Canada, and at all levels: provincial and federal, conservative, liberal, NDP, you name it. Canadian leaders are saying that Donald Trump was dealt a fatal blow during the midterm elections. Let me share with you some data points. First, you have the conservative Premier of Ontario, Doug Ford.

Here's what he had to say. Play this clip.

Speaker 200:01:30

Ford is speaking about the U.S. midterm results.

Speaker 400:01:32

I was doing cartwheels down the street, and you've ever seen a big guy like me doing cartwheels? I was jumping up and down when the results were coming in. But it's very simple: the American people spoke. The American people spoke on a couple of issues—cost of living, cost of gas, the war in Iran. But most important is tariffs, because that's all tied into the cost of living.

Ben Meiselas00:01:53

Doing cartwheels, he said. Also, Premier Doug Ford said Donald Trump said, "Pretend his name's on the ballot." The American people did, and these were the results: a massive rebuke. Here, play this clip.

Speaker 500:02:07

For them last night.

Speaker 400:02:08

Well, you know, President Trump wants to blame everyone else but himself. You know, he says, "Well, you know, just pretend my name's on the ballot." Well, the American people listened to that, and they showed what they thought about President Trump. And then after the election, he starts insulting his own candidates that he endorsed and said, "You know, these are lousy candidates, and my name wasn't on the ballot." Like, the cheese is slipped off the cracker with this guy, totally. Like, there is no cracker, there's no more cheese. And I think the Republican Party are going to start moving forward without him.

Ben Meiselas00:02:42

You know what an interesting thing in all the Maple Midas know about this? The Premier Doug Ford is, a few years back, he was seemingly Maple MAGA. You know, he was wearing the Maple MAGA hat and the gear, and his daughter's wearing Maple MAGA. And he turned strongly against Donald Trump, and he's actually working with Prime Minister Carney at the federal level and the other premiers to push back against the Trump regime. Now, look, I disagree vehemently on a lot of Doug Ford's policies.

I'll be very clear, and I'm sure you do as well. But you do see, by and large, this Premier Unity punching back against Donald Trump and the fascist Trump regime of sex predators covering up child sex trafficking rings of siccos and these demonic people who did this trade war against Canada and the world, the catastrophic war in Iran, and who are covering up the Epstein files and who've made life miserable across the globe for so many people. More from Premier Doug Ford right here about the midterms.

Play this clip.

Speaker 400:03:44

It's not just a victory for the people in the U.S. I think it's a victory across the world. And most importantly, it's a victory for the people of Canada, because they played a strong voice. It wasn't just myself. It was organizations, sectors going down there, premiers, elected officials at all three levels going and building the relationships, and especially with the newly elected people that the Americans elected. We're going to be down there communicating, building those relationships. So I can't wait to continue communicating and meeting the new governors, and we're going to move forward.

Ben Meiselas00:04:18

And finally, here's what Ford had to say. I'll show you what Carney had to say in just a moment. Let's play it.

Speaker 400:04:23

Again, I want to emphasize: the war is not over. We have to continue making sure that we move faster, quicker, immediate on everything across the board.

Ben Meiselas00:04:32

Now, Prime Minister Carney said, "So I guess the Trump regime is now doing a process of more intense negotiations with Canada." I mean, who really knows? I mean, the Trump regime is so arbitrary, capricious, reckless, malicious, weird, demented, all of the above. So I think they're who knows what they're trying to do right now. But we'll do what's best for Canada. Okay, here, play this clip.

Speaker 500:04:59

It's not always necessary to have the trade negotiators go in, you know, formally into the U.S. trade representatives' offices or the Department of Commerce or the equivalent to happen here. There are good lines of communications. They're open. Progress is being made. So I would say, in effect, those—I'm not splitting hairs—but that process of more intense negotiations has begun.

Ben Meiselas00:05:27

More from Prime Minister Carney over here about a potential U.S. trade deal. He's like, "So if I were to kind of paraphrase it, it's they're asking less than they're offering more." In other words, perhaps the Trump regime is thinking about a concept of a concept of a deal. And Prime Minister Carney is like, "You know, look, we'll listen. We'll consult with the ministers and the various premiers and the industries in Canada, and we'll do what's best for Canada."

Okay? Because Canada's also focused on its multilateral free trade with billions of people across the world, most recently associate member status with the European Union. Here's what Prime Minister Carney had to say, though. Play this clip.

Speaker 500:06:13

The crux of it is that we have made progress. And because we have made progress, it was felt important to acknowledge that publicly, including, as per the question, that there would be more formal negotiations, more intensive negotiations is the term that I use. So that's clear around that. Some of our red lines have clearly shifted around language, around culture, around sovereignty, our ability to have trade deals.

In other words, those are now off the table. That's very welcome. There are other important issues on which we still need to make progress. So we've made progress, but we haven't finished. You know, if I were to paraphrase it, it's they're asking less and they're offering more, but we're not quite there.

Ben Meiselas00:07:04

Then Prime Minister Carney dropped this video about the new Canada-EU alliance. Does Donald Trump push Canada away? But duh. Move Canada and EU closer together. Shared values, shared principles, free trade, solidarity. Trump is isolated, weak, pathetic, talking about reflecting poles, men's asses, whatever the heck he's talking about, golden ballrooms. Here's what Prime Minister Carney posted. Let's play it.

Speaker 500:07:32

This alliance is built for people. The student in Edmonton who wants to study in Stockholm. The cancer researcher in Saskatoon who needs her answer today, not next spring. The Vancouver startup with new customers in Berlin. The sovereignty for all of our citizens. The freedom to live our lives as we choose on our own terms. The ambition to build a better, more prosperous world for ourselves, our children, and our children's children.

Ben Meiselas00:08:00

Then you had Charlie Angus, former member of Parliament, NDP. And here's what he had to say about Donald Trump, "The goon in chief," he says. Let's play it.

Speaker 600:08:11

Now, is there going to be a trade deal? I don't know. Maybe. Donald Trump seems desperate right now, for one. But we also have Pete Hoekster who's threatening us that they're going to come after us if they start losing elections in the midterms and they're going to blame us. I think the thing is, is that Canada is going to do what Canada is going to do. The trade war against the United States is going to continue until we get peace, peace that we can trust. The Prime Minister has said he's more than willing to wait out Donald Trump, that we're getting pretty tired of the intimidation and the tactics that are being used.

So we are willing to wait this out. But the idea that Donald Trump, goon in chief, top predator, Mr. Ganglord, intimidator, having to now back down because the midterms are going south and make it look like he likes Canada, that he's trying to get a deal, that he hopes it will be nice to him. Well, folks, that is just too sweet. So let's enjoy it while we can, because we're back in the trenches tomorrow and the fight continues.

I spend a ridiculous amount of time online between running Midas Touch, social media, emails, shopping, and all the different apps we use every day. I don't even want to imagine how much of my personal information is just floating around out there. And here's what's disturbing: the data brokers collect that information, and then they put it up for sale. It's so messed up. Your address, phone number, personal details, things you never intended to make public. But that's why I've been using DeleteMe, and the results have been pretty eye-opening. Since February 2024, DeleteMe has reviewed over 12,000 potential exposures of my personal information and removed 211 exposures.

That's 211 instances of my information being out there that DeleteMe helped take down. It is really unsettling to see those numbers, but I'm happy DeleteMe is taking care of it. And the process is super simple. You just tell DeleteMe what information you want removed from people's search sites. Their experts handle the work, and they send you regular personalized privacy reports showing what they found, where they found it, and what they've removed. Especially with the work we do at Midas Touch, that's peace of mind that I really appreciate.

Ben Meiselas00:11:01

Then we heard from the EU special envoy about the feeling on both sides of the Atlantic that the world order established 80 years ago by the United States is no longer solid, that Donald Trump has ripped to shreds the post-World War II architecture. So obviously, Canada's moved on. Canada, EU forging new relationships as Donald Trump's out there rage-posting weird memes and whatever the hell this psycho is doing.

Here, play this clip of the EU special envoy with Canada. Let's play it.

Speaker 800:11:37

You talk about needing friends, and perhaps Canada is that friend. But is this in part because what was once a good friend of the United States has now become an adversary under President Trump?

Speaker 400:11:47

Well, clearly, I think there is a feeling on both sides of the Atlantic that the world order that was established 80 years ago is no longer very solid and that we need to get closer together, those who believe in democracy, in multilateral system in the global world order, need to work much closer together. The United States clearly is an element of that process, but there are also others. I mean, China is, of course, a big economic rival as well.

So it's much broader than only the United States. And it's also important, and I think all three leaders today in the press conference said that we're not doing this against anybody. We're doing this because it's in our own interest.

Ben Meiselas00:12:32

Also, we heard from the former U.S. ambassador to Canada about the new Congress. Play this clip.

Speaker 200:12:37

I don't think we should underestimate the importance of today. This is the beginning, the very beginning of a process where Americans can begin repairing a wound that we have inflicted upon ourselves. And one of those important things that we need to do, amongst many, is repairing the trust relationship with Canada. And Vashi, we're going to have a new Congress. And as the former U.S. ambassador to Canada, I am calling on this new Congress to begin immediately a formal reconciliation process with Canada.

And I think that that needs to begin almost the first day they come into office in January.

Ben Meiselas00:13:22

More from former U.S. ambassador to Canada over here. Let's play it.

Speaker 200:13:26

I do believe that a deal will come. I don't know if it's right away or two years from now, but we're going to get a deal. We're going to fix the economics between our two countries. The harder effort that is going to take place, and I know Canadians will be looking to Americans for this, is to rebuild the trust. And that's not going to happen overnight. And many of us in America are going to work very hard to try to do that. But, you know, just saying I'm sorry doesn't make that just get fixed right away.

We're going to have to prove it in the United States, and we're going to have to work hard. But the first step is going to have to be repairing these economic lines and getting a trade deal done. And I hope for both of our sakes this gets done soon.

Ben Meiselas00:14:09

Dominique LeBlanc, the main trade representative. He's been in Canadian politics and leadership positions forever. He's the main negotiator with the Trump regime. And here's what he had to say. Let's play this clip.

Speaker 800:14:25

So why isn't this changing your approach? Is it possible to go back now and say, look, we don't want any tariffs at all?

Speaker 900:14:32

I think, actually, it's not particularly constructive for Canadians to interpret results in a foreign country's election. We're not going to do that. I have every confidence that your American journalist colleagues will be asking all of those questions over the next number of weeks. We look forward to seeing Americans interpret the results of their own elections. It's not up for Canadians to try and read into why particular American voters went in a particular direction.

Our job is to focus on what we can control, and that's to work with the people that Americans have elected. And in the case of our trade conversations, those are conducted at the level of the American executive with the cabinet secretaries that President Trump has in his government, and they remain in office today. And those are the people with whom we'll be having those conversations.

Ben Meiselas00:15:26

Also on Canada's Power and Politics Show. Here's the supercut they showed of what was going on during the campaign as Donald Trump and the MAGAs were attacking Canada while Democrats were being very supportive of our top ally that Donald Trump attacks because he's a demented lunatic. Here, play this clip.

Speaker 1000:15:46

Canada.

Speaker 1100:15:46

Canada.

Speaker 1000:15:46

Has been ripping off the United States.

Speaker 1100:15:49

When your boss tells you they're cutting back your hours because of the tariff war with Canada.

Speaker 200:15:53

The Canadians have not been good partners on this.

Ben Meiselas00:15:56

We know that Canada is not our enemy.

Speaker 1000:15:58

Harvested here, but processed in Canada.

Speaker 900:16:01

I love Canada. I love everything about it.

Ben Meiselas00:16:04

Canada is a state. Sorry, audience listen.

Speaker 1200:16:07

I have been strongly voting against the tariffs with Canada.

Speaker 1300:16:14

They're having trade wars with Canada for absolutely no reason.

Speaker 1400:16:17

The big trade war he's starting now is with that well-known evil empire, Canada.

Speaker 1000:16:24

Canada is learning their lesson. They took advantage of us for many, many years.

Speaker 1400:16:29

Canada. I mean, these are the people who gave us maple syrup.

Ben Meiselas00:16:33

I mean, look, we know Canadians here. If you're in a trade war with Canada, it's because you're the asshole. And then finally, you have Jake Paul and JD Vance, very weird, very weird people over here. And Jake Paul posts this video of JD Vance, Vice President, promoting his fight in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, as the Trump regime was massively rebuked. How tone-deaf can you be? You know, and by the way, who's your audience? Like, y'all realize you look like a bunch of freaking losers?

A good data point. Young men, men under 30, went Democrat nearly 70% to 30%. Because if weirdo JD and Jake Paul, like, if they think this is like showing that, like, they're cool to young men, I mean, this is some weirdo stuff right here. I'll say that. But here, play this clip.

Speaker 1500:17:27

Yo, JD, what up? I need a favor. Something happened.

Ben Meiselas00:17:30

What'd you do?

Speaker 1500:17:32

I didn't do anything yet, but I'm fighting on Christmas Eve in Dubai, and I'm going to need a pardon for what I'm about to do to this guy.

Ben Meiselas00:17:39

Jake, you don't need a pardon. You just need to keep your hands up.

Speaker 1500:17:43

Okay, true. Yeah, I got my jaw broke last time. Yeah, you're right.
