Episode summary

This episode of The Level Up Podcast, hosted by Paul Alex, explains how to describe an offer so that a new customer can picture it without needing background knowledge. Drawing on his years selling cleaning products and equipment at Ecolab, Paul argues for plain language that starts with who you help and the actual work you provide.

He suggests adding only the details that matter to the customer's situation, then testing the message by asking someone to explain it back. Listeners will learn how to describe a service in one sentence, which delivery details help customers evaluate an offer, and how to fix confusing terms without adding more claims.

Welcome to the Level Up Podcast. I'm your host, Paul Alex. I went from being a cop to an 8-figure entrepreneur that helps average people like you and me make money every single day. I created this podcast to help you get motivated and to crush your goals. Let's win together.

Remember, I have your 6. Get ready to level up right now.

00:00:21

What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Level Up Podcast. I'm Paul Alex. And today we're talking about explaining what you do. You understand your business.

00:00:31

You've been thinking about it for months. The person hearing about it may be giving you their attention for the first time. Can they quickly understand who you help, what you do, and why they would need it? Before I wore a badge, I sold cleaning products and equipment at Ecolab— things like soap and commercial dish machines. That was part of where I developed my communication skills.

00:00:52

I want that same plain language when we talk about business here. If somebody needs to stop and figure out what your words mean, you're making the conversation harder than it needs to be. Try explaining the service in one clear sentence. For example, you clean small offices after business hours, or you help local businesses respond to inquiries and book appointments. Those descriptions give the listener something they can picture.

00:01:17

Then, explain the details that matter to their situation. What's included? How does the work happen? What will they need to do? You can add detail without burying the basic point.

00:01:26

Test the explanation with someone who doesn't already know the business. Ask them to tell you what they think you're offering. Listen to the answer before correcting it. If they heard something different, that tells you where to improve. Maybe you're leading with a tool instead of the problem it helps solve.

00:01:42

Maybe you're promising several services but haven't explained which one the person needs. Maybe you're using a familiar word in a way they don't understand. Fix the confusing part and try again. Don't keep adding sentences just because the first explanation didn't work. Sometimes you need fewer claims and a clearer description of the actual work.

00:02:02

Bottom line? Your customer shouldn't need your background knowledge to understand your offer. Say who you help. Explain what you do. Make the next step clear.
