Episode summary

In this episode of The Level Up Podcast, host Paul Alex Espinoza explains how to recognize when a customer is a poor fit for your business and why saying yes to that work can be costly. He discusses mismatches in experience, capacity, timing and budget, and suggests that a smaller scope or a different schedule sometimes produces an agreement both sides can accept.

When it does not, he argues that an honest conversation is better than a rushed commitment, especially when existing customers and team obligations are already on the calendar. Listeners will learn which questions reveal a mismatch, how to explain their limits without making the discussion personal, and how to weigh delivery costs before accepting a job.

Welcome to the Level Up Podcast. I'm your host, Paul Alex. I went from being a cop to an 8-figure entrepreneur that helps average people like you and me make money every single day. I created this podcast to help you get motivated and to crush your goals. Let's win together.

00:00:16

Remember, I have your 6. Get ready to level up right now.

00:00:21

What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Level Up Podcast. I'm Paul Alex, and today we're talking about a deal you want badly enough to ignore the problems. The customer needs something you don't really offer. The deadline doesn't fit.

00:00:35

The expectations keep changing. But you want the revenue, so you're getting ready to say yes anyway. Let's slow that conversation down. When I talk about sales, I care about closing the right deals. A sale creates work you're responsible for delivering.

00:00:50

If you already know you can't meet the expectation, getting the payment doesn't solve that problem. It gives the problem a customer who is now counting on you. Think about the job after the agreement, not just the relief of getting the yes. Be clear about the mismatch. Maybe the person needs a service outside your experience.

00:01:08

Maybe they need it sooner than your team can deliver. Maybe the amount of work doesn't fit the budget. None of that automatically makes them a bad person. It may mean your offer isn't the right answer. Ask questions and explain what you can realistically provide.

00:01:23

Sometimes, a smaller scope or a different schedule works for both sides. If it doesn't, be willing to say so respectfully. You don't need a dramatic speech about knowing your worth. You need an honest explanation of what you can and can't deliver. Look at who else would be affected if you accepted the job as it stands.

00:01:42

Would your existing customers wait longer? Would your team need to abandon commitments you've already made? Would the work cost more than you allowed for? A business grows through promises it can keep. Taking on work that disrupts every other promise can put that growth at risk.

00:01:58

Make the decision with the whole workload in view. Bottom line, you don't have to win every deal to build a good business. Understand the customer's needs, explain your limits, and look for a workable fit. If the fit isn't there, honesty now can save both sides a difficult experience later. Thanks for tuning in to the Level Up Podcast.
