Episode summary

This episode of the Level Up Podcast, hosted by Paul Alex, explores how to respond when a difficult morning threatens to derail the rest of the day. Paul argues that listeners should separate what happened from what they do next, describing a setback in specific, factual terms rather than as a sweeping judgment about themselves or their work.

He covers practical steps: correcting mistakes, informing affected people, asking for help when needed, and choosing a necessary task that can be finished to restore direction. The episode also addresses owning frustration that has spilled into other relationships, and reviewing the issue later to improve processes and learn from it.

Listeners will get a simple framework for resetting attention after a setback.

Welcome to the Level Up Podcast. I'm your host, Paul Alex. I went from being a cop to an 8-figure entrepreneur that helps average people like you and me make money every single day. I created this podcast to help you get motivated and to crush your goals. Let's win together.

00:00:16

Remember, I have your 6. Get ready to level up right now.

00:00:21

What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Level Up Podcast. I'm Paul Alex, and today we're talking about the mistake that comes after the mistake. Something goes wrong in the morning. A call falls through.

00:00:32

You miss a deadline. You get news you didn't want. Now you're carrying that frustration into every conversation and letting the rest of the day fall apart. The first problem happened. What happens next still needs your attention.

00:00:45

I talk about taking responsibility because it gives you something to work on. That includes how you respond when a day doesn't go the way you wanted. You don't have to pretend you're happy about it. You do need to separate what happened from what you're about to do. Those are 2 different decisions.

00:01:00

Start by describing the problem accurately. A customer canceled an appointment. That isn't the same as nobody wanting your service. You made a mistake in an order. That doesn't mean everything you do is a mistake.

00:01:12

Keep the description close enough to the facts that you can act on it. Then handle what needs handling. Make the correction. Let the affected person know. Ask for help if the issue needs more than you can do alone.

00:01:23

After that, choose the next useful task you can finish. It may be smaller than what you'd planned. That's okay. Finishing a necessary piece of work gives the rest of the day some direction. And if your frustration has spilled onto somebody else, own that too.

00:01:38

Being disappointed about one situation doesn't make it fair to take it into every other relationship. At the end of the day, review the actual issue. Is there a process to fix? Something to prepare differently? Learn from it when you can give it proper attention, instead of punishing yourself with the same thought every hour.

00:01:56

Bottom line? A bad morning doesn't have to decide what you do all afternoon. Give the problem an accurate name, take the action it requires, then return to work you can still do. You don't have to rescue the whole day at once. Start with the next useful decision.
