Episode summary

This episode of The Level Up Podcast, hosted by Paul Alex, explains how to decide whether hiring is the right answer when a business owner feels overwhelmed. Paul says a busy schedule shows that a need exists but not which role would solve it, so the first step is to write down recurring tasks and group related work into one coherent job.

He argues that a role needs clear priorities so that a good week is recognizable, and that the employer should consider what information, training, decision-making authority and feedback a new hire will need. Listeners also hear why affordability matters and why a focused piece of support can sometimes fit better than a broad job description.

What's up everyone? Welcome back to the Level Up Podcast. I'm Paul Alex, and today we're talking about hiring help. You're overwhelmed. Everything feels urgent.

00:00:31

You want somebody to walk in and make the business easier to run. Before you start looking, answer this: Can you explain the job you need done? Or are you just trying to hire your way out of a feeling? Building a team matters to the kind of business I want. I want capable people and clear responsibilities.

00:00:48

That means I have to think about what the work requires before expecting someone else to own it. Being busy tells you there may be a need. It doesn't tell you what role would actually help. Write down what keeps taking your time. Group the work that belongs together.

00:01:03

Scheduling, customer updates, and keeping job information organized may point toward one kind of support. Finding new business may require different skills. Decide what matters most. If the role is 20 unrelated jobs with no clear priority, you'll have a hard time explaining what a good week looks like. The person doing it will have a hard time knowing whether they're succeeding.

00:01:25

Think about what you'll need to provide. Where is the information? What training is necessary? What can the person decide and when should they ask? What will you review to know the work is being done well?

00:01:36

And understand what you can consistently afford. The person you're hiring is making a commitment too. Be honest about the work, the expectations, and the support you'll give them. You may decide the first step is a clearly defined piece of help instead of a broad role. That's fine.

00:01:51

Solve the need you've identified. Don't make someone responsible for organizing a business you haven't taken time to explain. Bottom line? Hire for work you understand well enough to define. Know the priority, the resources, and the result you're looking for.
