Transcript of Breaking: Trump Caves on Greenland after World Laughs at United States

We have some big news right now. Donald Trump has said that we have a framework of a deal as it relates to Greenland. In other words, he caved. That's the simplest way we can describe it, as he now says he will be rolling back his 10 % tariffs on several European countries after executing this so-called framework of a deal regarding Greenland and the Arctic. He said this deal came about after significant conversations with Mark Root, NATO Secretary General, along with other European leaders. But it came after he had a very icy reception in Davos, Switzerland, for the World Economic Forum. At the same time, here in the United States of America, we learned today that in the past hour or so, that ICE has begun operations in the state of Maine. Let's jump right into it. Minutes ago, the President of the United States says, quote, Based upon a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Root, we have formed a framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and in fact, the entire Arctic region.

This solution, if consummated, will be a great one for United States of America and all NATO nations. Based upon this understanding, I will not be imposing the tariffs that were scheduled to go into effect on February first. Additional discussions are being held concerning the Golden Dome as it pertains to Greenland. Further information will be made available as discussions progress. Vice President Vance, Rubio, Whitkoff, and others will be responsible for the negotiations. They will report directly to me. Thank you for your attention to this matter. Now, This statement comes after Europe really rebuked the President of the United States in Davos. But I do really want to take a minute and talk about this statement because number one, all he says is there is a framework of a future deal with respect to Greenland and the entire Arctic region. To me, this really reads as a concept of a plan type situation with regarding health care or anything else he talks about in the United States, because he does not outline what details this framework of a deal contain. In fact, we have really nothing here in terms of what this framework of a deal is.

I always thought from the beginning that many of the President's threats regarding Greenland in terms of an actual military invasion were unfounded and likely were not going to materialize. And I I would even taken it a step further that when Donald Trump said the United States must have Greenland, that was him hyperbolizing. In reality, what the United States wanted is just more military presence on Greenland and control over some shipping routes through the Arctic where he is partially right in that the Russians and the Chinese have both utilized the shipping routes in and around Greenland significantly, and that very well could pose somewhat of a threat to NATO and to the United States. But at no was the Greenland becoming the United States ever on the table? Because for that to happen, the people of Greenland would need to agree, the people of Denmark would need to agree, and they would not agree to that. He was seeing that there was significant heat that he was taking from Republicans here at home who even said that he would potentially be impeached if he were to militarily invade Greenland. And so this is his off-ramp here.

He is now saying, You know what? We have this framework of a deal. Will we ever know what this framework of a deal is? I don't know that it will ever materialize, and I don't know that the United States will ever have a larger presence in Greenland or anything publicly anytime soon. And it came as he was getting significant, really rebuked in Europe. I mean, take far-right Prime Minister of Italy or the President of Italy, Giorgia Maloney, what she had to say. He was going after European countries, and she's like, well, what do we have to do? Do we have to end NATO? Do we have to stop serving McDonald's in our countries? And it wasn't the only one. I mean, the European Parliament today said, essentially, we're going to cut off all trade deals with you regarding the new EU-US Trade deal.

It is essential friends. History teaches us a simple truth. Appearacement does not bring peace. It invites more aggression. And this would only embolden Trump and invite further increasingly reckless demands. So like my colleagues, I am demanding a robust response from you, Commissioner Callas, and also from the leadership within our union. We can try diplomacy, but we should not be afraid to hit Donald Trump where it hurts. He exploits hesitation and despises weakness. We need to hit him where it hurts. Thank you.

We need to hit him where it hurts. That's coming directly from the Europeans who today put their trade deal on hold with the United States because of what he was doing with Greenland and of these terrorists. And he was asked about this long term deal, by the way, just minutes ago by CNN. Take a listen to what he had to say.

Does it still include the United States having ownership of Greenland like you said you wanted?

It's a long term deal. It's the ultimate long term deal. I think it puts everybody in a really good position, especially as it pertains to security and minerals and everything else.

Have you really spoken to other European leaders?

Yes, I have. How long would the deal be, Mr. President?

Infinite. Did you speak to that much? There was no timeline, but it's forever.

How would you ratify the deal?

It's a deal that's forever.

But you haven't signed anything yet, right?

It's a deal that's forever. Will there be an effect? No. Will there be an effect? No. No money. People are What happens is people are out there and they're working it right now. They're working the details of the deal, but it's what's called an infinite deal. It's forever.

You talked about- An infinite deal. That's what he's calling this, by the way. It all comes as here at home, ICE has begun operations in Maine. Take a listen to someone from Maine.

We've now heard confirmed reports that ICE is in Portland and Lewiston and possibly in other parts of Maine. We've heard reports of them stopping and detaining people outside schools. This is exactly what we'd worried about, what we've been preparing for. And thank you to everyone who is observing, who is doing all they can to help their neighbors in this incredibly scary time and this challenging time. Honestly, it makes me sick to my stomach to think about our federal government harassing people, making children afraid, and really just working to cause chaos across our communities. It's a really important time that people continue to remember and know their rights. Ice cannot enter your home without without a judicial warrant. We now have reports of ICE conducting significant operations in areas around Portland, Maine, and elsewhere. So a significant day, but ultimately, the truth is that the framework of a deal is just that, a framework, even though it doesn't seem like the United States is going to be owning Greenland anytime soon, even by the President's own admission.
