Welcome to another special edition of the MeidasTouch Podcast. I'm Ben Mycelis, and look, I'm not going to hide the ball here. We got Senator Bernie Sanders on this special midterm edition of the MeidasTouch Podcast, and guess who else we've got? We've got Democratic Congressmember Robert Garcia. I have two very important conversations that we're going to bring in in just a moment. First, I'll bring in Senator Bernie Sanders, then Congressmember Robert Garcia.

Of course, Congressmember Garcia will be the new chair of the House Oversight Committee, and I think once he became the Democratic leader for the House Oversight Committee, once he started injecting, I think, just the type of aggressiveness that we all wanted to see, even when Democrats were not in the majority, we saw major changes happen—aggressiveness in terms of getting the Epstein information out there. I won't say all the files, because Donald Trump and the MAGA Republicans keep covering it up, but starting to hold people accountable with the limited powers that existed when you're not in the majority.

Now, Democratic Congressmember Garcia in the majority—a big deal. And I want to talk about that House Oversight Agenda, because to me it's like one of the most important mandates that Democrats have, which is aggressive, robust, and ruthless oversight of these MAGAs, of these crooks, of these criminals, of these oligarchs, of these truly evil and demonic people who have damaged our country so much, inflicted so much pain and trauma, and frankly, to heal, in order to move forward, we need to confront these truly evil forces, these oligarchs, these corrupt individuals in the Trump regime, the Trump grifter crime family.

They need to be held accountable right away. So I want to talk to Democratic Congressmember Garcia about that. And of course, I want to talk to Senator Bernie Sanders about how he started with that Fight the Oligarchy tour back in early 2025. We covered every—you remember?—every single Fight the Oligarchy rally with Democratic Congresswoman AOC. You had—who else would join that tour?

You had other major—well, first off, a lot of the Democratic Congress members-elect were part of that tour as well, and they were all showcased during the Fight the Oligarchy tour. But Senator Bernie Sanders was always such an incredible leader. His vision on making sure to fight for all Americans, to fight for affordability, to fight the oligarchy, to listen. One of the most important things in that Fight the Oligarchy tour—you remember when I would show it?—there would be an aspect of it where they would listen, and Senator Sanders would ask the people in the audience, "What do you think about this?

What do you think about that? Tell me what issues matter to you the most." And we would hear their fears about AI and regulated and data centers, and we would hear about how the oligarchs were screwing them over, the importance of releasing the Epstein files, affordability, how healthcare was being ripped away in the wealthiest country in the history of the world, that people are not getting healthcare, and people in the United States die significantly younger than people in other places of the world, and it doesn't have to be that way.

People not getting paid, but one just not even getting paid a minimum wage. And then we need to talk about a wage—not just a livable wage, but a wage with dignity. And there are so many candidates that were out there who won, and it was Senator Bernie Sanders who was responsible for, who that Fight the Oligarchy tour was responsible. And it was interesting. I hear about the mandate. The mandate, to me, clearly is a progressive mandate right now.

But the interesting thing is—and you know this from how I cover all of these events—what became very clear to me is just how the gamification of politics divides we, the people, and how even though, obviously, when we think about affordability and healthcare and housing, and when we think about wages with dignity and unions and workers, that's framed as progressive because those are significant progressive ideals, what I found interesting is that when you had Senator Sanders speak in "conservative" areas, what the people wanted was basically the same: healthcare and housing, affordability, and to be paid with dignity, and to be able to have a good education, and not to have data centers in their backyard, and to be safe.

I mean, there are so many things that are connected here, and it became very clear that when you have to fight the oligarchy, they're pouring so much money into politics in order to divide us, in order to create a rage culture where we're pitting people against each other while these oligarchs are the ones looting and stealing and grifting and taking from us. And so what became very clear, for example, and you'll see this in the Mississippi race with Scott Caloum, you talked about an area like Mississippi, when he's out there speaking with people and listening, people are like, "Oh, well, Mississippi is a red state.

It's a red state, and it's this and that." The people in Mississippi are saying the same thing that the people in New York City are saying, really, when it comes to affordability and cost of living and healthcare and AI and jobs and healthcare and all of these issues. And so I think that's such a profoundly important observation. I want to remind everybody about our book, WTF: America, The Way Out of This Hell and Back to Democracy. Get a copy of it right now. All right, I'll stop yapping. I know. Ben, bring in Senator Sanders.

All right, let me bring in the first interview of the special post-midterm election edition of the MeidasTouch Podcast. Let's bring in my interview that I just did with Senator Bernie Sanders. Let's bring in Senator Bernie Sanders. Now I want to bring in Senator Bernie Sanders. Senator Sanders, great to see you. Of course, a major victory. I want to say this: for the people of this country electing individuals who will fight for the people of the country. Sure, the headline, a big Democratic victory.

Ben Meiselas00:07:17

I think it's a democracy victory, a victory for workers. And in large part, I think it began with the Fight the Oligarchy tour when you and others were traveling around the country back in 2025, listening, hearing from people when there was a very dark shadow cast over this country. Let's start there with the Fight the Oligarchy tour and how important you think that played in this big victory.

Bernie Sanders00:07:44

Well, I think you make a good point. We ended up going to, I think, 45 communities in dozens of states around this country, and we started at a time, I think, a couple of months after Trump was reelected, and people were pretty demoralized. And what happened is huge numbers of people—I mean, the turnouts were unbelievable. In Denver, I think we had 35,000 people. We had more than that in Los Angeles and Folsom, California and Iowa and Nebraska and Idaho.

I mean, we went to conservative parts of the country to hear where people were at. And I think what the Fighting Oligarchy tour showed is that people want—not only are they dissatisfied with the status quo, they really want fundamental and structural changes in the way our economy and government works. There is a full understanding that the economy is rigged. The rich are getting much richer.

Working people are struggling. The campaign finance system is corrupt. Billionaires buy elections. People made it clear they wanted change, and I think that rippled across the entire political spectrum and played a role in what we saw happen on Tuesday.

Ben Meiselas00:09:08

Yeah. When you went to these so-called conservative areas, it stood out. They're not that conservative in the sense of what the term has been used. It turns out they're people, and they actually share a lot of the same concerns that so-called progressives have. And so these labels—what became very clear to me as I was following your tour and I was showcasing all of them—I said, "You know what? All of this labeling has actually been intended to divide us and gamify politics.

And at its core, what we really should be talking to are the issues that really matter to the people." And that's what kind of struck me when you went to these areas. These were the same issues that progressive people were talking about, that these oligarchs were crushing them.

Bernie Sanders00:09:57

Absolutely. I will never forget, for what us was a smaller event, we did it in West Virginia, in the most pro-Trump county, in a very pro-Trump state. And to your point, you know what we heard? "Bernie, we can't afford healthcare. We can't find a doctor. We have to travel hours to get to a specialist. We're worried about the quality of education our kids are getting. We're worried about our drinking water and whether it is safe to drink.

We're worried about the future of the country." So what we heard in conservative areas from working people is exactly the same thing we heard in progressive areas. The system is broken. People want and demand change. And bottom line here, Ben, is it would be one thing if we were a poor country, and I said to you, "You know, Ben, 90 million people are uninsured or underinsured. We can't afford healthcare for all. We're a poor country." Or, "We can't afford to make sure that all of our kids can get to college without going deeply into debt."

Or, "We can't afford to raise the minimum wage to a living wage." We're a poor country. We are the richest country in the history of the world, but at the same time, we have more income and wealth inequality than we have ever had in our history. You got one man, Mr. Musk, owning more wealth than the bottom 53% of American households. Do you think conservative families think that's a good idea? No, they don't. So what we need to do is to make certain that when Democrats take power in January, their agenda is an agenda that is prepared to take on the oligarchs and fight for working families.

And we've got to get beyond generalities. What does that mean? Well, if you'll allow me a second just to tick off some of the things, in my view, that we have to do. Trump, in the so-called Big Beautiful Bill, that terrible piece of legislation, threw 15 million people off of the healthcare that they have in order to give a trillion dollars in tax breaks to the top 1%. If we do not act, tens of thousands of Americans will die because they don't have healthcare. That has got to be rescinded immediately.

But that is not enough. The healthcare system is broken. We need fundamental reform, and that means we need to do what every other major country on Earth does, and that is guarantee healthcare to all people as a human right. That means Medicare for All, four-year transition program. First year, lower the Medicare age of eligibility from 65 to 55, expand Medicare to cover dental, hearing, and vision, include all of the children, do away with out-of-pocket expenses.

That's number one. Number two, what do you do right now to impact the lives of ordinary people who are struggling? You raise the minimum wage to a living wage. Right now, insanely, 7.25 an hour federal minimum wage. Got to raise that minimum wage to, in my view, at least $20 an hour. Thirdly, if we're going to have the resources that we need to make sure that our elderly are living, can retire with dignity, and we don't have the highest rate of childhood poverty of any major country on Earth, we need a wealth tax on billionaires.

We have a proposal out there, $4 trillion over a 10-year period. We could provide in the first year $12,000 rebate cash for a family of four, $3,000 for every working-class person in this country for immediate relief. We can make public colleges and universities tuition-free. We can build 7 million units of low-income and affordable housing. We can have universal and free childcare. That's what we could do with a modest tax on a handful of billionaires because they are so very rich.

And obviously, it goes without saying, what this campaign was significantly about, as Vice President Vance pointed out, it was the war in Iran. That has got to end. We can end it. We can end all funding to the extremist government in Israel as well.

Ben Meiselas00:14:26

And I think that there is a mandate right now to do all of those things. Some people are calling it a progressive mandate, but my view is it's a mandate. That's what the people want. And what I also want to be careful of, again, is the labeling purely because I think progressives and people who think that they're conservative want the things that you just said. I think, actually, all of that is progressive, but conservatives go on because they've been lied to by this Trump regime thinking that that's and it's like, no, it's not.

And corporate news is getting this completely all wrong, even after the results are staring us in the face.

Bernie Sanders00:15:08

Ben, you are absolutely right. You know what the polling is right now on Medicare for All? Over 60% of the people support Medicare for All. Overwhelming support for increasing taxes on billionaires. Overwhelming support for ending the war and US military aid to the Israeli government. These are not "progressive ideas." Your point is right. These are the ideas that the vast majority of the American people believe in.

Ben Meiselas00:15:37

So how do we deal with this money pouring in, though, by the oligarchs to divide us? One tool they use are these labels. They pit us against each other so that they can be the ones who loot and plunder.

Bernie Sanders00:15:51

All right, Ben, now you're touching on a very, very big issue. And it's one that I'm afraid a lot of my colleagues get very nervous about dealing with. And that is we are living now in an oligarchic form of society where a small number of people have not only incredible wealth, but they increasingly own the media, by the way, which is why what you do and other podcasters are doing is so terribly important.

You're giving the American people an alternative view outside of mainstream media, corporately-owned media, terribly important. But maybe most significantly, these guys increasingly own the political process. Now, they failed, and that's the good news, but not for lack of trying. The billionaires spent huge amounts of money trying to win this election to maintain Republican control over the House and the Senate.

Do you know how many lobbyists? I'll give you one example that comes to my mind. We pay by far the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. Take a wild and crazy guess as to how many lobbyists there are from the pharmaceutical industry in Washington, DC. Take a crazy guess.

Ben Meiselas00:17:10

I'm going to go 25,000.

Bernie Sanders00:17:13

25,000? No, not quite that many. That's a little crazy. But we got 435 members of the House, 100 members of the Senate, 535 members of Congress. There are 1,500 lobbyists, three lobbyists for every member of Congress. Got it?

Ben Meiselas00:17:34

Got it.

Bernie Sanders00:17:35

That's why you pay the highest prices in the world for prescription drugs. And that's an issue we must deal with.

Ben Meiselas00:17:41

And they probably have staff and assistants and others.

Bernie Sanders00:17:43

Absolutely.

Ben Meiselas00:17:44

So I'm going to go with my number as being not far off.

Bernie Sanders00:17:49

Even if it's inaccurate, go with it. What's the difference?

Ben Meiselas00:17:52

So what do we do, though, because if we get trapped in election-cycle gamified politics, that's where the oligarchs want us to be and pit against each other. Who's winning? Who's losing? This personality, that personality versus why we win. So what I talk about on this show a lot is elections are very important, but these authoritarians had a generational and international plan that has been going on for a while to have the outcomes we see now.

So I talk about building generational and international structures as well to fight back because these authoritarians are international in scope. We see the links. Talk to us about that.

Bernie Sanders00:18:38

Well, when you talk about generational change, take a look, as I hope your viewers do, at many of the new people coming into Congress. And I'm especially attuned, obviously, to the progressive members. And you are seeing younger people, many of them under 40, many of them have never run for major office before. They really come from the grassroots.

They're just ordinary people. They're trade unionists. They're community organizers. In Montana, you have a guy who's a smoke jumper. They're teachers in California, a young man who's a teacher in a community college. So you're seeing now not only a new generation of younger people coming in, but a more diverse group of people, often people of color, a lot of women, and so forth. Your point, though, which we need a longer period of time to discuss, is the international issue.

It is not an accident that Elon Musk puts a whole lot of money into right-wing extremist parties in Germany and elsewhere, why Trump pays attention to right-wing parties in Latin America, and why this issue of oligarchy is not just an American issue. I often talk about how 1% owns more wealth here than the bottom 93%. That's true in country after country all over the world. You go to countries in the Gulf region, you go to UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar.

These are dictatorships run by some of the wealthiest families in the world. And interestingly enough, Ben, do you remember the first foreign policy trip that Donald Trump made when he came back to office? Do you remember where he went?

Ben Meiselas00:20:36

Yeah, he went to the Middle East.

Bernie Sanders00:20:37

Did he go to Canada? Did he go to Europe? Where did he go?

Ben Meiselas00:20:40

He went to the Middle East.

Bernie Sanders00:20:41

He went to Saudi Arabia. And I think these are countries that do not believe in democracy. Their dictatorships are really strong dictatorships, but they have incredible amounts of money, and they're spreading that money all over the world to gain increased influence. So when we talk about oligarchy, understand that people like Musk make massive investments in Saudi Arabia, that you've got a small number of people with unbelievable wealth who are having enormous impact on the economic and political life of the entire world.

And you're quite right in saying that the response to that has got to be an international response, which, among other reasons, is why I was delighted that Lula won reelection in Brazil.

Ben Meiselas00:21:31

And some of the strategies he deployed to push back against the algorithmic manipulation that we can learn from. You and I should do a whole show about that because we could talk about the WhatsApp chat of 10 million people who pushed out coordinated messaging, and we talk a lot about that.

Bernie Sanders00:21:46

I'd love to do it. And this issue of media, all right? I don't have to tell you. You know it a lot better than I do. Who owns the social media in America? Who owns Twitter?

Ben Meiselas00:21:57

It's the oligarchs.

Bernie Sanders00:21:58

Who owns Meta?

Ben Meiselas00:21:58

It's the Musks. It's the.

Bernie Sanders00:22:00

Zuckerbergs.

Ben Meiselas00:22:01

Musks. It's the Zuckerbergs. It's the whole crew.

Bernie Sanders00:22:04

Ellison.

Ben Meiselas00:22:05

Ellison.

Bernie Sanders00:22:06

We should talk about that because what media is, is not the "fake news" that Trump talks about. It's not like reporters are liars and all that. That is not what it is. Most of them, reporters try to do their job. It is what are the issues that corporate media will discuss. We are the only major country on Earth that doesn't guarantee healthcare to all people. How often you tell me, Ben, you're an acute observer. How often do you hear that issue discussed on corporate media?

Ben Meiselas00:22:38

Yeah, very little.

Bernie Sanders00:22:39

Ever hear it?

Ben Meiselas00:22:40

No.

Bernie Sanders00:22:40

Okay. We have more income and wealth inequality today in America than we've ever had in the history of this country. You hear that discussed on NBC, ABC, CBS, Fox?

Ben Meiselas00:22:49

No. The most important issues are always ignored by the corporate news. And you can say, is that a coincidence, or is it that they don't want to talk about it? Because if you have these conversations, you unite the people, and you can see who they're uniting.

Bernie Sanders00:23:02

That is precisely what the issue is. So what we have got to do is take a deep breath. Give you another example. AI is the most transformational technology in the history of the world, period. Nobody denies that. It will have a huge impact on our economy, probably eliminating many millions of jobs. It could eviscerate our privacy rights. It could undermine our democracy by putting stuff on the internet that people will not know whether it's true or fiction.

It is undermining the mental health of our kids who are getting addicted to AI and to having bot companions. And of course, as some leading scientists are telling us, there is an existential threat of what happens if AI becomes smarter than humans and we lose control over AI. What happens then? How often is this fundamental issue in which the big tech oligarchs, Musk and the others, pushing this forward without any government control?

How often are we even discussing that? So your point is the more important the issue, often the less that it is discussed. And we need to change that.

Ben Meiselas00:24:22

Data centers, lots of referendum. I think there was 41 moratoria on referendums in communities and cities, all of them passed with overwhelming support to block these data centers. I mean, 75, 80 percent of people voted against them. This was an issue that you were talking about on the Fight the Oligarchy tour. And when you were asking and when you were asking the people, you would have the listening session, partner of the Fight the Oligarchy tour, "Tell me what you're worried about," is one of the issues that came up.

Bernie Sanders00:24:53

Absolutely. You know Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and I introduced this, I think, I think 9 or 10 months ago, we introduced the national moratorium on the construction of data centers. "Oh, Bernie, you're crazy. Oh, my God. Nobody wants to do this." Well, as you just said, we saw the results on Tuesday. I think it ended up with 42 out of 43 communities voted for a moratorium or some restrictions that weren't way or another. So people are concerned. All right, the bottom line of this whole discussion I've got to get going is there are enormous challenges facing the American people.

Donald Trump came to power because working-class people kind of gave up on the Democrats, and they said, "All right, Democrats aren't doing anything. We're going to vote for this guy, Donald Trump." People today have given up for all the right reasons on Donald Trump. Now they're looking to the Democrats. The Democrats cannot, at this enormously important moment, fail the working class of this country. We've got to stand with workers. We've got to take on the oligarchs, and we've got to produce and make sure that we make life better for the average working family.

That's what this challenge is about. We've got to do it.

Ben Meiselas00:26:07

Senator Bernie Sanders, truly appreciate your time. We hope you'll come back on soon, and let's chat about international. Let's chat about media. Let's chat about anything. Thanks.

Bernie Sanders00:26:16

Thank you very much. Take care. Bye-bye.

Ben Meiselas00:26:20

Great interview there with Senator Bernie Sanders. I appreciate I was able to speak to him for about 20 minutes. Very, very inspiring. And to me, what he discussed there, that's the mandate that Democrats have. I don't want them to blow that mandate because what he was saying right there, to me, that's where America's at right now. I think that's what the American people feel. Tell me what you think about it. But every word of that, I think that appeals to people from New York City to Mississippi to Indiana to Arizona to New Mexico to Minnesota to you name it, every state, every state, right?

I mean, that's what I think voters want. That's the message that was sent. When you see all of these statehouses turning blue, all of these state legislatures, right, turning blue, the state Supreme Courts turning blue, and of course, the massive victory Democrats had in the House of Representatives, what went all said and done, going to have like 260 seats, maybe more, right around there. In the Senate, 56 seats or so, right? I mean, when you talk about this, it's delivering on an agenda that helps people and rejects the hate and rejects the hate.

So incredible, such a great honor to be able to interview Senator Bernie Sanders. All right, now I want to bring in Democratic Congress member and soon-to-be chair of the House Oversight Committee. Let me bring in my interview with Democratic Congress member Robert Garcia. Let's bring in that interview. Now I want to bring in Democratic Congress member Robert Garcia, the new chair of the House Oversight Committee. Great to see you, chair-elect, but I'm just going to say you're the chair now in my heart, just a few months away. Your immediate message was lawyer up right there to let's talk about that.

Lawyer up. Talk about that message in general.

Robert Garcia00:28:11

Yeah, I mean, look, I think we have to be very, very honest about what the American public are demanding and what we ran about. We ensured for us that in order to win, we talked about affordability, and we talked about taking on corruption. And obviously, as the new, hopefully incoming chair of oversight after our official vote, I'm going to really focus on that accountability piece. And lawyer up is a direct message to anyone that has harmed the American public, that is drifting off the American people, whether you are a Trump family member, whether you are Kristi Noem and you're abusing your position when you were secretary, whether you are a corporation or CEO that is ripping off the American people, or whether you're a co-conspirator of Jeffrey Epstein.

People need to understand that it's going to be our job to take on corruption and to ensure that as we're focused on affordability and bringing down the cost of gas and groceries, we're also holding the crooks accountable.

Ben Meiselas00:29:08

Look, you can chew gum and walk at the same time. And I think the big mandate, though, that people are saying, "Don't forget about this," is exactly your portfolio, which you're not. And I want that to be very clear, is that aggressive oversight is at the top of the agenda. And what you've been able to do when you were not in the majority, now you have subpoena power. And I think that's the mandate. People want to see aggressive, ruthless, relentless, wherever the law takes, whatever that means.

That's what I hear every day, Congressman.

Robert Garcia00:29:46

I hear the same thing. I mean, people came out in droves because they're angry. They're angry at looking at the gas pump and how expensive it is. They're angry when they're feeling they're being ripped off at the grocery store. They're angry seeing their money being spent on a war that nobody asked for. And they're angry at government, at the corruption. Because remember, what they're seeing is they're going to the grocery store, they're seeing the prices, then they're watching TV and hearing about how the Trumps are richer than ever.

So as people struggle, the Trumps get billions and billions of dollars richer. And that is at the heart of why people, I think, turned out. They saw the abuses, the corruption, how people are profiting off the humanity of ICE and DHS. They saw how the Trumps continue to get richer. And they're thinking, "All I want to be able to do to afford my life for me and my family." And so that's got to be at the center of our agenda. And I think it will be. I think people have been clear, Democratic leadership are clear that we're going to have both affordability and accountability as those two cornerstones of our agenda.

Ben Meiselas00:30:55

Let's talk about since the big victory, have you been hearing from whistleblowers and other people saying, "Now, I'm ready"? Have you been speaking with them before for this opportunity? I mean, there's a lot of people I know who wanted to testify that James Comer prevented, and they probably have a lot of great things. They just want the right forum to tell their story.

Robert Garcia00:31:16

Yeah, obviously, we've been talking to folks even before the election, but we expect there'll be a significant amount of folks that are going to want to engage and that are going to want to share their stories knowing that they're going to be protected by the House and that they're going to have a majority that is going to listen, that wants to focus on supporting people, on protecting whistleblowers, on making sure people know that, yes, we are committed to truth. We are committed to accountability. We want to get to a place where government is not viewed as a thing that's harming people.

We want to protect our democracy. And that's going to be an important part of these next couple of years. And I think the country is demanding that of us. I've always said, for us to really be able to move forward, there has to be justice. There has to be accountability. And I think that's going to be the job of oversight.

Ben Meiselas00:32:10

You know, I saw Melania Trump in the White House today spewing Russian propaganda next to Kirill Dmitriev. And I was, again, it hits me viscerally, like, what the F is going on here? You see Don Jr., you see Eric, you see this Trump family. Barron is out there. I know Melania wants to coddle him like he's a toddler, but he's an adult, and he may be involved in stuff. Talk to us about that and about when these people get subpoenaed, when they have to testify.

And you know they're going to fight it and run like the cowards they are, but when do they get hit with subpoenas?

Robert Garcia00:32:46

Yeah, I mean, look, obviously, we don't take over the Congress till January. And so we're going to have to, right now, just continue the planning and also, quite frankly, dig in over the next few months because we still have a couple of months of Republican control, and they can do a lot of damage in a couple of months. And so we have to really push back hard, dig in, push back against any kind of efforts they may try to make, whether it's through the Supreme Court, an appointment there, which is concerning, or whether they try to ram through some kind of new legislation in the House.

That's going to also be really critical. And then we're going to begin the planning. So once January's here, we're ready on day one. Look, we are prepared for that first day where we have those gavels and we're in control of the House to begin those investigations. The Trump family is at the top of the list of folks that need to answer questions to the American public. Why are they grifting? Why are they stealing your money? Why are they stealing everybody's wealth and hard-earned labor and then giving it to themselves and to their friends? Those are the quick questions people want to know.

Ben Meiselas00:33:48

Trump has caused a lot of these MAGA Republicans to lose their job, and they're pissed and they're livid at that. Do you think and have you been hearing so far that, you know, look, there's probably the cult's going to cult. They're going to do what they're going to do. But do you see yourself going back to Congress next week and maybe seeing some cooperation by people who didn't want to help, saying, you know, MAGA's dead, these people screwed me, and there's a world without Trump, and I have to think about that now?

Do you think there may be that when you return next week?

Robert Garcia00:34:23

I do. And I really hope so. Look, first, many of the members that expected to be back are gone. And so a lot of these Republicans that are in the House right now who thought they'd be safe won't be coming back to Congress in January. And so we'll see what they choose to do. Will they finally have some courage? Will they finally stand up to Trump? I hope and I think some of them will because now they're going to be not worried about their own reelection. And the other piece is, for the rest that are there, they've got to understand that the country rejected their policies.

The country rejected what they tried to get through in that huge bill that caused so much harm to healthcare and tax policy. We need to make it very clear to the American public that the work isn't over. And I've told folks, and this is really important for your viewers as well, we are right now at the beginning. So we are in the process right now. This is not the end. This is the start of something new. This is the start of a larger movement towards winning the White House in '28, towards repealing all the horrible things that Trump has done, and to putting forward a new agenda that locks in a true progressive movement where we're uplifting working people, we're supporting all families, and we get back to a place of just common decency where people can actually be kind to each other and support each other.

I think that's what the American public want.

Ben Meiselas00:35:53

Talk about building your team right now. I mean, obviously, you've put together an incredible team, a lot of young talent across the country of Democrats who are going to be with you on the House Oversight Committee. I was so impressed with what you all did when you were not in the majority. But talk to us even about the other type of staff, like the lawyers. There's a lot of top lawyers that the Trump regime purged who are probably looking for a job to actually follow law and order. There are people who are working at firms that may not reflect their values, who want to help out.

How do you build this team so that you've got the best talent that there is?

Robert Garcia00:36:30

Well, first, we're really excited about the team we're building. And we're really committed to ensuring that we have the top-notch talent from across the country. Our resume bank is overflowing right now. And so when we're able to grow in the majority, obviously, we'll be able to bring in a bunch of new folks. We're going to hire up. We're going to hire some of the best policy people and lawyers and investigators, communications people that will allow us to do the work of the committee, tell our story, and most importantly, deliver for what the American people voted for on Tuesday.

We have a job now, and that's to deliver. And we have to tell the American public clearly that, yes, affordability is the driving issue, but that accountability always, always, they're always linked. And without true reform of the corruption, we're never going to have an affordable America. We're never going to have these oil companies that are making record profits that are ripping you off at the pump, these large companies that are putting in surveillance pricing to charge you something different than what your neighbor's paying at the supermarket.

These are real issues, and they're ones that we're going to take on.

Ben Meiselas00:37:38

And I can tell you're also paying a lot of attention already. I think you made a statement with some of the early drops on the social media accounts, how you're going to communicate with the people aggressively. Keep it, though, entertaining, always factual. But I think that's an important part as well. Can you speak to that? Because that's what I've noticed just right away already. It was like there's a real social media plan going on as well.

Robert Garcia00:38:03

Look, we have to get people's attention, right? I mean, the reality is that we're competing with so much other stuff out there, entertainment, sports. People's attention are drawn everywhere. And so if we're going to deliver our message, we've also got to cut through. And that means having a really sharp communication strategy. And that's something that we've been able to do even in the minority with a much more limited resource structure. And so we do expect to have a robust communications team and plan to communicate this message to the public so that they know what we're doing.

Transparency is really important here.

Ben Meiselas00:38:38

And before we go, Congressman, you've told me this before, but I just want to remind people now that we're past the midterms, the way you've seen kind of the multi-prong approach. There's like an Epstein approach. There's a tech approach. Go over that again with us.

Robert Garcia00:38:55

Yeah, I mean, we're basically going to have four main lanes, our investigative lanes. And the first is Trump family corruption. That's focused on the Trump family and all of the grift. The second is going to be on DHS and ICE, especially Gnom and Lewandowski, who there's just a lot of allegations and questions that need to be answered there. We know what they've been doing across the country in kidnapping people in these detention centers, who's profiting off of those. Then we'll have our corporate corruption lane. And so anyone that's ripping off the American public or is in bed with the Trumps, ripping off the American public, that'll be really important.

And then finally, of course, is the Jeffrey Epstein investigation. So true justice for the survivors, real public hearings, uplifting the stories, those are our key four lanes. And we're excited to get to work on those.

Ben Meiselas00:39:41

There are whistleblowers, people who have info and want to give tips. How do you there are so many people who watch us. What do they do?

Robert Garcia00:39:49

They should just go to the Democratic Oversight website, and there's a whistleblower protection page there where they can get information, whether they want to call, whether they want to leave a message. It's all protected.

Ben Meiselas00:40:00

Congressman Garcia, the chair of the House Oversight Committee.

Robert Garcia00:40:05

Thank you.

Ben Meiselas00:40:07

I want to thank Democratic Congressman Robert Garcia. And I think it was important to listen to that interview because I know if you're like me, we're thinking, do not let these criminals, do not let these sex predators, do not let this Epstein class, do not let these oligarchs get away with it. We can walk and chew gum at the same time, sure, but this ain't a kumbaya. They go low, we go high moment.

No, we could address the issues of cost of living. We could address the issues of affordability and jobs and healthcare. Very, very important, very important. Every day, put bill, pass legislation, pass it. If Trump wants to veto popular legislation that the people want, let him do it, but keep fighting for it and make it very clear that you're fighting for these bills and let's get that information out. At the same time, we can do both. Make sure that oversight is ruthless.

Subpoenas every damn day. Do not let these Trumpers, do not let the Trump crime family, do not let these oligarchs, do not let that criminal cartel, these gangsters, these, frankly, international gangsters get away with their crimes. Investigate the hell out of them. And I'm confident Congressman Garcia will. He showed us that he could do that. Anyway, that's our special edition for you.
