00:00:00

Zazz, what's going on with your eye?

00:00:04

You noticed?

00:00:10

You look like you just walked off a World War I battlefield.

00:00:15

I got a stye, Dan. I got a stye today. I felt it coming yesterday, and I'm like, damn it. And then I woke up this morning and I got a stye.

00:00:24

How often do you get those?

00:00:26

Not that often. I don't know, once or twice, maybe twice a year.

00:00:29

Not that often.

00:00:30

That's pretty often. Put it on the poll at Le Batard Show. Is getting a stye twice a year often?

00:00:38

Is that contagious or not? Because you're sitting next to me at the breakfast table.

00:00:40

No, man, it's not contagious. It doesn't matter what you use. Stop asking stupid questions.

00:00:43

You say, though, that that's not that often. Getting a stye once a year sounds to me pretty often. Once or twice a year. Like, I've never had a stye of any kind.

00:00:53

No, really?

00:00:55

Yeah, I don't know what a stye is.

00:00:57

I mean, it's essentially like— it's, it's like an infection.

00:01:00

Put it on the poll, Juju. Uh, do you know what a stye is? Have— and also put on the poll, have you had a stye? Has anyone other than Zazz in this room had a stye?

00:01:11

I've had one in my life, but one or two a year.

00:01:14

Never.

00:01:15

No, never. What is that, like a pimple inside your eyelid?

00:01:17

Yeah, but it like— it hurts like a bastard.

00:01:20

Oh, let's pop that thing.

00:01:22

No, you can't do that. You can't do it. Let's do that.

00:01:24

It's gonna ooze into your eye.

00:01:25

When I was in high school, I used to get styes as part of like the acne that I would get. And when I would get really stressed out, I would get them. And I eventually, uh, with one stye that lasted for several months, had to get it surgically removed.

00:01:36

Whoa.

00:01:36

In which they clamped my eyes open and just sliced open my eye and I had to watch the blood splurt everywhere. It was terrible. It's one of the most scarring things of my entire life.

00:01:44

Classic one-upper story.

00:01:45

It's just the truth.

00:01:46

What do you want from me?

00:01:47

Slice his eyeball open.

00:01:48

It was actually 2 of them, but we, you know, we can— you would get them from stress? I would get them from stress.

00:01:52

You were like Chris Elliott in Something About Mary.

00:01:56

You just got outstied.

00:01:56

You ever get a stye on your eye?

00:01:58

He just got outstied by Jeremy.

00:02:01

In a way that was, uh, pretty dramatic. Like, he made Zaslav seem silly by comparison, where he's surgically having his eyes held open and watching the blood spurt across his face. That's the worst stye story I've ever heard. I've never heard of one worse than that.

00:02:17

Wish we still had a call-in line. Make a call if you got a worse one. Call it in.

00:02:21

How much worse could it possibly be than their Clockwork Oranging your eyes open and then slicing it so that all you can see with your open eyes is your own blood spurting in fountain form across your face. We also have a controversy today. Apparently the catchphrases of Greg Cody, many of them are stolen from Uncle Dick. Uncle Dick on the recent episode of Greg Cody, The Greg Cody Show featuring Greg Cody.

00:02:49

With.

00:02:50

has claimed that 12 of the phrases in the Catchphrase Countdown are stolen, and then he gives 11 examples of the phrases that were stolen. There is no 12th. They don't have a fact-checker on that show. They skipped right past the fact that he didn't actually have 12 accusations, but he claims there are 12 that are stolen, and he tried to prove it with 11 of them. Chris, is it real? Did it seem real to you that Uncle Dick of Dick's Rough Riders, believes that his younger brother has stolen an assortment of catchphrases. Greg just gave the back of the hand wave.

00:03:30

I would say half of them he has a good case that he said them before my dad and my dad kind of purloined them from him. And the, and the other half he has no— he's just full of shit.

00:03:44

You're listening to the Dan Le Batard Show in partnership with the DraftKings Sports app. Now live in all 50 states. I want to get us off to a rip-roaring start, so let's do what we have never done before. Let's open the show with the useless sound montage.

00:04:12

I freaking love that guy. I love everything he's about. Like, you wouldn't want that guy in your foxhole? Then you're in the wrong foxhole.

00:04:18

I mean, the fight—

00:04:18

I'm talking about our team— was what you want to see in a There's times that you find it in win, and there's times that you find it in loss.

00:04:24

We have to be opportunistic when we have these opportunities.

00:04:28

You know, we have an opportunity with the hat on our head.

00:04:29

We gotta go make it.

00:04:30

Gotta demand it from yourself. It starts with the man in the mirror.

00:04:33

Proud of the way the guys fought. You know, nobody blinked when we were over there on the sideline and they scored and went up. They didn't bat an eye. Nobody flinched. Nobody blinked. I think we were all just chopping at the tree. We kept chopping, fixing the things. That's stats.

00:04:45

You know, for us, the only stat we care about is the win column.

00:04:47

All hands on deck. It's a group effort to get these wins. I thought we competed a full 60 minutes. and found a way to get a win.

00:04:54

It stinks.

00:04:55

Obviously a great performance. I'm proud of them. Just kept chopping at the tree and it showed. We knew it was going to come down to 4 quarters, maybe a 5th quarter if possible. Yeah, I mean, it stinks. Yeah, no, he was ripping and roaring and ready to go. You want to put your best foot forward.

00:05:09

I cannot believe we're in Tottenham Stadium.

00:05:11

Like, this is so cool. Man, we just got to circle the wagons. Coach always says don't ride the roller coaster. We had our opportunities the last 2 weeks, but, you know, certainly this isn't Armageddon or anything.

00:05:19

And then they showed Wayne Rooney.

00:05:21

And so Regan and I are like looking up at Wayne Rooney.

00:05:23

He's watching us.

00:05:25

I've always been taught to be a one-play warrior. It's a marathon, not a sprint. To win in the NFL is dang hard, man. These are 2 very good offenses that we play against, but that's not an excuse at all. Gotta find a way to learn from this and move it, move it in the back of our brain. Gotta be crispy with communication in and out of the huddle.

00:05:43

Big dubs, big dubs, big dubs.

00:05:45

I had some tea for dinner yesterday, Jasmine Silvertip. So I was just like, hopefully everyone else has had it before. So I had to show the world, hey, I had some really good tea. We're slowly just, just Tightening all the screws.

00:05:56

That's what winning teams do.

00:05:57

You know, they find ways to win games. That's why they're winning teams. Honestly, I'm not a big rah-rah guy. You know, Sammy's tough as crap.

00:06:03

Man, we needed it.

00:06:04

We needed a win. I definitely don't think we hit the panic button.

00:06:07

They battled their tail off and our guys battled their tail off, and that's what this is all about.

00:06:12

Everything, you know, you put in your bank of experiences, good and bad, you learn from it. Just keep playing. Just keep playing. Tough times don't last. Tough people do. Gotta be the same person every single day. I don't care how bad things can get or how good things are. If you're not the same person every single day, you're not staying true to yourself.

00:06:26

It stinks.

00:06:27

You know, we got to ramp him up, give him a ramp-up period. At the end of the day, we had our opportunities. It's not everyone's day every Sunday. Like, that's the hard part about it. There's only one football. I love a big game, you know what I'm saying? And I feel like every game is a big game because we're in it. Yeah, I mean, it stinks. I wanted this game. I don't think we needed this game. I think a great teacher is the bench. You know, the fringe area, red zone. Now this field gets a little smaller, gets a little shorter. Now they got to really be on their P's and Q's for execution. No one's tucking their tail. No one's feeling bad for themselves. I believe, you know, that we'll be able to flip the coin. You got to keep believing and then you got to do.

00:07:00

Keep doing.

00:07:00

Keep believing.

00:07:01

Keep doing.

00:07:02

Keep believing.

00:07:02

Keep doing.

00:07:02

Keep believing.

00:07:03

Keep doing. Last year's bread isn't going to feed us this year. I would say that nobody's going to outwork Chiz. His prep work— that's okay. Everybody's new trying to get down here, new stadium and everything else. I remember in college, Coach Day used to always say, you know, you have to be an iPhone, you have to upgrade every year. I thought we did a better job running, running the football. We have a word in our family, the team, Godfidence.

00:07:31

Was that Josh Allen saying 4 times it stinks? I think we don't need any other commentary from Bills-Patriots. We have in our midst Greg Cody, who is saying in print and elsewhere, although he doesn't appear in print anymore. So Substack is not actually in print.

00:07:49

What's Substack?

00:07:49

No longer in print. He is positive about the Miami Dolphins. He says he sees improvement every week. He is the only person in America who is saying this.

00:08:01

No, I don't think so. They should have beaten Minnesota. I mean, they had a long touchdown pass Negated because someone stepped out of bounds by a quarter of an inch.

00:08:12

Yeah, the guy who caught it. No, but he did step out of bounds. He could have stayed in bounds and he stepped out of bounds before catching the ball, which is illegal.

00:08:18

Yeah, and that's the Dolphins' fault, but the point is they should have won that game. They outplayed Minnesota defensively, I thought. And, you know, there were a lot of—

00:08:28

They did?

00:08:28

How did they outplay them defensively?

00:08:30

They had fewer than 100 yards passing.

00:08:32

Yeah, Dolphins defense was the only defense on the field that didn't give up a touchdown. Wait a minute.

00:08:39

Kyler Murray's only had 1 touchdown in 23 drives. He can't score against anybody.

00:08:44

I know, he's a quarterback quarterback.

00:08:44

And Hockenson slid at the 1-yard line.

00:08:46

Yeah, like Greg. He took a knee at the 1.

00:08:48

Yeah, there were 2 bad offenses on the field. I'll give you that.

00:08:51

Where are you coming with the analysis from other than just strictly Homerdom where they're 0-4, they haven't had a lead all season, and you have them improving in every game just because they played a close game against Minnesota in which Minnesota actively did not score a touchdown that was right there to be scored?

00:09:09

Right. And, and the Dolphins had a touchdown negated by a quarter of an inch.

00:09:12

Because they did something illegal.

00:09:15

Okay.

00:09:17

Nobody disputes that Chris Bell did something illegal there. The field—

00:09:21

Illegality may be a bit strong.

00:09:23

The field is the same length and width every single week. Okay, you got to stay in bounds before you touch the football.

00:09:29

If you don't see incremental improvement by the Dolphins from week 1 to this past Sunday, you're not looking hard enough.

00:09:37

Well, where is it? So give an example.

00:09:40

There's examples all over the field. I mean, we just saw Ollie Gordon, the backup running back, actually the third-string running back, rush for 100 yards on 9 carries. The defense, as I mentioned, had 4 sacks after having 0 in the first 3 games. Zach Seiler had 2, and Chop Robinson had probably the best game of his career to reignite confidence that he has a future. Rodriguez, the rookie linebacker, Jacob Rodriguez, has been fantastic. He's one of the defensive rookies.

00:10:11

They are a 7.5-point dog at home against Cincinnati that doesn't have its 2 wide receivers, correct? Both Tee Higgins and Ja'Marr Chase are going to be—

00:10:20

I think they're day-to-day. Yeah, they're iffy. They're— I'm sure at least one of them is going to play.

00:10:26

The one place I would go, and I I think the Dolphins have gotten progressively worse so far in these 4 games.

00:10:33

Really?

00:10:33

Yeah.

00:10:34

You're looking at it with one eye though. I'm looking at it with both my eyes. I have no stye. You're stye guy. Go on, what were you saying?

00:10:44

The one angle that I would take if I wanted to be positive about what's going on with the Dolphins right now is the 4 games that they've lost, the Raiders are 3-1, the Niners are 4-0, The Chiefs are 4-0, the Vikings are 4-0.

00:10:57

And the only loss is because they played each other. Like, 2 teams that they've played have played each other.

00:11:01

Right, correct. So like, again, I don't know if that should give the Dolphins credit, but they probably played the hardest schedule through 4 games.

00:11:09

Sure. Yeah, that's fair. That's fair. The schedule continues harder, but the idea that, that some people are already talking about 0-17 is preposterous on the face of it. It's At the very least, it's egregiously premature. Too soon. It's silly soon.

00:11:27

You know what? I'm gonna jump in here mid-cough. I'm gonna defend my dad here. I think they win this week against the Bengals.

00:11:33

What?! It wouldn't surprise me.

00:11:34

Such a letdown spot.

00:11:35

I'm telling you, this Dolphins team— I'm with my dad.

00:11:37

Letdown for who?

00:11:38

They've been competing.

00:11:38

For the Bengals. This is a classic Bengals letdown spot where you go in, you're a 7.5-point favorite. Alright, our guys are banged up. We're playing the Dolphins. Let's just roll the ball out there and then they lose, you know, 21-20.

00:11:48

Can you have a letdown after a loss?

00:11:50

I don't think you guys understand how a letdown works.

00:11:52

It's not a letdown.

00:11:53

I don't really think that that's the way that that works.

00:11:56

That's an overlooked game.

00:11:57

A letdown—

00:11:58

There you go.

00:11:58

A letdown is when you've had a game that's been very emotional—

00:12:02

You've played well.

00:12:03

That you've won, and then the following week you overlook an opponent.

00:12:07

I guess I know what you're talking about.

00:12:08

You know what's weird about that is that letdown and let up should be opposites, but they basically both mean the same thing. I don't think the Bengals will let down or let up. because they're coming off a loss.

00:12:20

What about, will they overlook?

00:12:24

Um, I don't think so. No, not coming off a loss.

00:12:27

You really gave that a pondered thought. Like, you really, you really entertained that question very seriously.

00:12:32

You got to.

00:12:33

And you have to.

00:12:34

Do you?

00:12:35

Yeah.

00:12:35

I believe that the Dolphins, okay, are being— the money is telling you, okay? The money is telling you when they're a more than touchdown underdog at home that the money's not seeing a great deal of improvement. There are going to be a lot of teams in the sport this week that are, uh, an underdog of more than a touchdown at home. Tampa was playing its second quarterback against Green Bay and they were a 3-point dog at home. You're not going to find a whole lot on the schedule. Go ahead and look at the schedule this week, Tony, and give me all the other home teams that are more than a touchdown underdog at home. And Cincinnati is pretty hurt as well.

00:13:15

Yeah, I, I do think it's, it's a very early line. I predict it's going to go from 7.5 to 6.5, which is a huge point. But I just—

00:13:23

I'll bet it goes up.

00:13:24

Do you? Yeah. Oh, I don't think so. I'll make a little bet on that. How much?

00:13:27

The Dolphins lines every week have gone down over the course of the week just because they start so high and football tends to have just a ton of close games.

00:13:40

Cowboys are 9.5-point favorite at home on Thursday night against the Bucs.

00:13:45

The Titans are the only team down there.

00:13:46

Texans on the road in Tennessee. 7-point favorite.

00:13:51

The answer to your question is the only team that is a home dog of more than 7 points is the Tennessee Titans and the Dolphins.

00:13:56

Speaking of the Titans, let's get to some sound of Cam Ward being testy with the media. This has to be just a frustrating experience coming after what it is that Cam Ward experienced at the University of Miami.

00:14:10

Yes, Chris. I believe he's walking into a press conference room that has— he addresses one guy, so I don't know how many people, but it's it's not enough to meet his demands.

00:14:19

All right.

00:14:19

Let's see what we hear here.

00:14:20

Hey, ain't nobody here.

00:14:22

We just go.

00:14:24

Troy's going to ask the questions.

00:14:27

At least I'll get some good questions from Troy.

00:14:30

I got nothing.

00:14:32

They got 3 minutes, bro.

00:14:35

Start time. Sure. They come in this way. Walk out.

00:14:41

Come on, Cam.

00:14:43

He needs to be more aware of what's going on in that spot.

00:14:46

But at the same time.

00:14:49

Like, there's one media member there who's serving some sort of punishment from hell that he has to, to, to partake in a lifetime covering sports and gets the Titans as his assignment.

00:14:59

I mean, Jeff Halfley didn't threaten to walk out. What was it, Heat Media Day there?

00:15:02

He's saying there's one person there to ask. It's Troy. It's not even the assembled media. It's just Troy. Like he's saying, he's got—

00:15:09

he's saying Troy.

00:15:09

We should talk to Troy.

00:15:10

He's saying Troy's got 3 minutes. I'm not sure that we just didn't do Cam Ward dirty by playing that sound. Like, that's not sound worthy of being played on our show because he got testy with Troy. He said Troy had 3 minutes for his questions. What are you gonna ask Cam Ward at this point, honestly? Like, the, the experience, the back and forth. Well, but okay, I don't think it's possible to make an accurate assessment of what your quarterback is when the Tennessee Titans are what it is that you have. The Tennessee Titans are not the Atlanta Falcons, okay? You saw the Atlanta Falcons game last night.

00:15:45

Are they good?

00:15:46

Uh, well, offensively, their skill positions are obviously good, and the difference between Cooper Rush and Michael Penix is pretty enormous. When you look at the Michael Penix numbers, okay, when they had Cooper Rush, they had, you know, the fewest yards. They were terrible with 7 turnovers, okay? They were the worst team in the league. They couldn't score at all. And then the last couple of games, they've put up 80 points. They're scoring 40 points a game and they got 459 yards per game and 1 turnover. And between college and the pros, this is from ESPN Research, Penix has averaged 33 points a game in his 59 starts. Like, when Penix is healthy with those skill guys, that offense is formidable. I said after Week 2 that the Saints had my undivided attention. They no longer have any kind of my attention. My attention has been taken away now from the Saints. So it's divided? Yeah, well, it's not just divided, it's evaporated. My attention is gone. Saints fans were booing last night. They left early. They were really frustrated with their team. They love that rivalry, and that was embarrassing.

00:16:53

It was totally embarrassing. I want to say this. You're right about Penix. He's played very well since his return from injury. And London is a really good receiver, one of the top-tier receivers in the league who doesn't get enough credit. But Bijan Robinson is the best running back the NFL has seen since Barry Sanders.

00:17:12

Woo!

00:17:12

In terms of— in terms of you can't tackle that guy. The moves he makes.

00:17:17

Greg.

00:17:18

The moves he makes.

00:17:19

In a league with Derrick Henry.

00:17:21

Derrick Henry's still alive, Greg.

00:17:22

I understand that. And everybody's talking about Is Derrick Henry the greatest ever? And they should, because he's late enough in his career where he's fully formed. He's got all the numbers. Bijan Robinson's just getting started, and if he remains healthy, 10 years from now, what I just said is gonna be the, the word across the land. Oh, what?

00:17:42

Greg, I usually go into the breach with you in a lot of, in a lot of subjects. This one, I have a hard time peeking my head out of the foxhole. Okay, because there's other running backs right now actively that are just as good, if not better, than Bijan Robinson.

00:17:56

Don't tell me it's Jahmyr Gibbs.

00:17:57

I'm gonna tell you Jahmyr Gibbs, Greg.

00:17:58

No, it's not.

00:17:59

Don't tell him that.

00:18:00

Bijan Robinson's better than Jahmyr Gibbs.

00:18:02

Right.

00:18:02

I've seen them both.

00:18:03

I've seen them too.

00:18:05

You've seen them both with both your eyes?

00:18:07

Yes, my eyes are wide open, unlike some people's.

00:18:10

I see them both with one eye, Dan.

00:18:11

I will not object to saying that Bijan Robinson is obviously great. He's been great at Texas. He was drafted where he was drafted because everyone knows how great he is, how fast he is, how hard he is to tackle. Cam Ward is 3-18 as a starter. 3-18. But Jerome Solomon of the Houston Chronicle defends Cam Ward's behavior. He says, been to 1,000 postgame press conferences. It probably happened once somewhere, but I've never heard of a player having to wait 3 minutes for the media to arrive. His point isn't unreasonable and it isn't entitlement.

00:18:48

Yeah, but at the same time, we have to But we also have to acknowledge what we've talked about recently with the lack of reporters as far as the print media industry, where you have instead of 4 guys from one paper, you got one guy maybe, and he's running back and forth between the locker room and the media room. You got to give these guys a little bit of grace. This isn't the same situation as years past.

00:19:12

I agree, but you also have to be a professional, and particularly if you're the quarterback. De facto, you're the face of that franchise. I don't care whether it's one person there or a crowded room, you have to go in and do your time.

00:19:25

He needs to be more aware. He needs to be more aware.

00:19:27

Right, for sure. And I also, on a side note, 1,000 press conferences, that's totally exaggerated.

00:19:34

I'm trying to do— I'm locked in with my dad here. I'm trying to do the math on how old that guy is, how many press conferences he's done.

00:19:38

Yeah, it's like a Wilt Chamberlain where he slept with 100,000 women. Hey, listen, there's no way.

00:19:42

Dan Levitar. This is the quickest it goes. Hey, this is the quickest it goes.

00:19:46

Greg Cody.

00:19:48

Hey everybody, this is the quickest it goes. Yeah, this is the Dan Le Batard Show.

00:19:57

Our crack research team just gave me some interesting information, which is that Troy Wisneski is the senior video producer for the Tennessee Titans, which means there could have been zero media members at that press conference. Not even the one. There are no questions from Troy. And so I think what Cam is saying is, hey, they got 3 minutes or I'm out of here.

00:20:20

Wow. Does McClatchy own all the Nashville newspapers? What's happening?

00:20:23

I want to address a couple of the things here that were just covered. You say it's not possible for him to do 1,000 press conferences. Greg, in your 54 years of doing press conferences, where would you put the number on the number of press conferences you think you have been to? And was the number on Wilt Chamberlain 100,000 or was it 20,000? What was the Wilt Chamberlain number on number of women that he claimed to have slept with, because I think Zaz just multiplied it by 5. It was already impossible enough.

00:20:54

20,000.

00:20:55

Uh, it was—

00:20:55

I think I have it in my Things to Ponder file.

00:20:56

It was impossible enough, and Zaz made it 5 times larger for reasons that weren't necessary. How many press conferences do you think that you've been to, Greg?

00:21:04

I should try to do the math on that. I, I really should. I, I should calculate that.

00:21:09

Um, well, do it.

00:21:10

Well, the reason I don't think it's 1,000 is that But I didn't cover that many beats full-time. Like, I covered UM football for 4 seasons. I covered the Dolphins full-time for 2 seasons. And covering a beat is when you have to go to all the press conferences.

00:21:24

But press conference, it would be 20, an average of 20 a year is what you would have to do to have done 1,000 press conferences.

00:21:33

Oh, in that case, maybe I did.

00:21:35

20 a year sounds about where it is that you would—

00:21:39

That's definitely possible.

00:21:40

Yeah, you know, I'm gonna have to rejigger that and come up with a number. When I come on the show next week, I will have an exact number of the press conferences covered in my long career.

00:21:51

I'm gonna say again that the stats with the Atlanta Falcons— Cooper Rush was 8 points a game. 8 points a game. What's in the Things to Ponder file there?

00:22:01

Dan, just so you know, the Ponder file is always relevant. Is Wilt's 20K record real?

00:22:07

Wow.

00:22:08

Showed up out of nowhere.

00:22:09

It's in the Ponder file. Just makes you think.

00:22:11

So, Cooper Rush, 8 points a game, and Michael Penix, 40 points a game. The Atlanta Falcons look like an entirely different team when Penix is healthy.

00:22:22

Tua was named the starter 5 days before the opener. He hasn't played yet.

00:22:25

I know. And probably won't. His career is done. Tua's career is done. I've been saying—

00:22:31

I agree. I've been saying, I think he's done.

00:22:33

He's way too expensive. to be somebody's backup. He's just— I don't see any avenue for him to become a starter again.

00:22:40

He's not that expensive. What are you talking about? He's not— the Dolphins are playing— they're paying his entire salary. He's totally cheap. What do you mean he's too expensive?

00:22:48

Well, that's true. I was thinking of his income, but you're right, most of it's still paid by the Dolphins.

00:22:51

It's a million-dollar deal.

00:22:52

But I don't see him starting for anybody. He's damaged goods. I just think he's done.

00:22:58

Guys.

00:22:58

I hope I'm wrong.

00:22:59

Guys, we're a month into the season and all of the quarterbacks are hurt. Like, I understand what you're saying, that on merit he might not He's hurt. It's going to injure everybody else so that he will get some playing time somewhere because there aren't 30 people in the world who could play the position well. What was the name of the backup who came in after Cooper Rush? Who was it?

00:23:23

It was Jack Strand.

00:23:24

Jack Strand. Roy, what is your hotel pseudonym?

00:23:28

Jack Spade.

00:23:30

Jack Strand came in and was worse than Cooper Rush. The Falcons were on their 4th quarterback. quarterback.

00:23:37

Uh, great name, Jack Strand.

00:23:39

It's, uh, well, it's an actor's name.

00:23:42

It's a superhero. Jack Strand.

00:23:44

Yeah, yeah, yeah, he's right.

00:23:46

Yeah, Jack Strand. Yeah, I love it.

00:23:51

What's his power, Greg?

00:23:52

I'm gonna change— have my name legally changed to Jack.

00:23:54

No, he's a spy. He's a spy.

00:23:56

Yeah, pick-sixes.

00:23:57

The Jack Strand Show with Jack Strand.

00:24:01

I'm gonna write that down. Have name legally changed to Jack Strand.

00:24:06

Put it on the poll. Is Jack Strand a good name for a superhero? Tyler Herro went on Frank Isola and Brian Scalabrine's show. He's a notoriously bad interview, Tyler Herro, but he said some things that got some people in the Heat's audience agitated. He's hurt. He said that he's been looking for a fresh start because he's been amid trade rumors for several years. As— how did you feel? First of all, Chris, We didn't get the sound. Can you paraphrase some of the things that Tyler Herro said, please?

00:24:41

Yep.

00:24:41

I got 5 bullet points here. The first one, the Bucks head coach Taylor Jenkins' camp is the same, if not more intense than Coach Spo's. He jokes that the Heat aren't the only team with culture, as he, quote, was told. He says the Heat— this one's interesting. I don't really know what he means by this. The Heat had a lockout day this past deadline because they believed a Giannis deal was done.

00:25:02

That has to mean that, like, I've never heard that term either. It has to mean that they just gave everyone the day off and they're like, don't come in today because things could happen. I never heard that phrase before, though.

00:25:11

The next one, I have to believe Pat Riley's told every player. He said Pat Riley saw himself in Tyler Herro.

00:25:17

I think we heard that with Pat and Jimmy, too.

00:25:19

I just feel like he has to tell everyone that he's trying to build up that. And the final thing is Tyler. You just said this one. Tyler was pushing for the trade to get a fresh start.

00:25:27

So I was listening to this yesterday, actually.

00:25:29

It's a good show.

00:25:30

It's very good. I was listening yesterday when they had Tyler on and I was taken aback at the one comment I was taken aback was, and they were needling him a little bit about Heat culture and he's like, yeah, they, they play hard everywhere, you know, unlike what I was always told before. I thought that was a weird thing for Tyler to say, as if, well, you know, it's propaganda that the Heat are feeding their players.

00:25:51

What else is he supposed to say?

00:25:53

He doesn't have to say— well, he made it sound like he was being brainwashed. That's how I took it.

00:25:59

Well, the root word of culture is cult, and the Miami Heat do do some brainwashing. He said he was kind of pushing to be traded to Milwaukee, and I'm wondering if you guys can simply understand this is a wounded player. His feelings are hurt by what it is that happened here, and so some of the bitterness is going to leak out in some places. He was an All-Star. He turned himself— whether you want to question it or not, he turned himself, rather improbably, probably as a lower first-round pick into an All-Star by adhering to the Miami Heat's work habits. And he thinks he's responsible for his success. He doesn't think that the Miami Heat is responsible for his success. And he says that the Bucks will surprise people this year. I assure you they will not. I'm promising you that they will not surprise anybody. But the ball is going to be in his hands a lot. If he wants to surprise people, he's going to have plenty of opportunities with what looks to be a very bad basketball team.

00:27:02

You're right. They're going to be terrible, the Bucks. There's no way around that. But I actually— I took issue yesterday with all of the response to what Tyler said. And that's coming from, especially from Heat fans, where I don't— I don't like the things that are being said about Tyler Herro right now. Tyler Herro was a good player for this team. He was here for a long time, for 7 years. He was in trade rumors from his rookie year, from the day they drafted him. They were supposed to trade him for Russell Westbrook after they drafted him. From the day that he came here, he was in rumors all the time. He never complained. Pat Riley challenges Jimmy Butler in end-of-year press conferences, and Jimmy gets his feelings hurt. He does the same thing to Tyler Herro. Tyler didn't say anything. He puts his head down, he works hard, he comes back, and he plays the next year. You know, I, I don't like the discourse. I understand you don't like the things that he said about Bam. I didn't like that either. Okay. But I don't like the discourse around Tyler Herro where Heat fans are seemingly rooting against him and now talking about him as if he was some type of, you know, weight that held this team down the last few years.

00:28:11

I don't like the discourse around him. And it's like when Milwaukee comes here, Greg, Tyler's going to get booed and that's bullshit.

00:28:19

First of all, I don't think he'll get booed. I think he will get a largely positive reaction, and I also think the Heat are going to have the token tribute video.

00:28:28

Oh, definitely.

00:28:29

I don't think he'll get booed. I'm surprised to hear you say that. He had a nice career for the Heat. All-time great? Hell no. You know, is he going to be thought of as, as like one of the great Heat players? Not even a chance. I think he made one All-Star team. Injured a lot. You know, there's just a lot that makes you not miss the fact that he was included in the trade.

00:28:50

I think I can assemble an argument. Where would you put him here, all-time scorer for the Miami Heat? Like, just in terms of scoring ability alone for the Miami Heat, top 20?

00:29:00

Definitely. I'm higher than that.

00:29:02

Top 15?

00:29:03

At least top 15.

00:29:03

Top 10? Let's stop around top 15.

00:29:05

Top 10?

00:29:06

Somewhere between 10 and 15.

00:29:07

I mean, he was a really good scorer. And the way that we talk about him has its disrespect. When he says the Bucks are going to surprise some people, Kyle Kuzma is already feuding with people on Twitter who are pointing out he was over 6 in a preseason game, 20 minutes, 1 point. And you've got the tweeters saying, I cannot do 82 more games of this guy. I mean, it is fair. Kyle Kuzma is wildly frustrating. And I believe that when Tyler Herro misses Heat culture, little bee looking in Kyle Kuzma's eyes.

00:29:45

That's right.

00:29:45

He's just going to see something vacant there. And Kyle Kuzma is going to be wearing some parasol and some fabric from the 1800s and much more interested in style and fashion than he is in scoring more than 1 point in a basketball game.

00:30:01

That's actually where the two of them will get along is the way that they dress. But Kuzma responding to this person saying it's preseason, calm down, LOL. No, that guy didn't tag Kyle Kuzma. That means he went and sought out that tweet from a fan and then responded to that guy.

00:30:17

Sought out the tweet is strong. Maybe somebody sent it to him.

00:30:19

Maybe he just looked.

00:30:21

Yeah, somebody sent it to him.

00:30:21

Okay.

00:30:21

Somebody put it in the comments.

00:30:22

All I'm saying is go ahead and look at, at Kuzma's behavior on Twitter as of late, and you're not going to be surprised.

00:30:28

You're leading the witness there. Leading the witness. Objection.

00:30:31

Okay, Tony.

00:30:32

Down, leviathan! Hello, this is not Greg Cody.

00:30:36

Greg Cody!

00:30:37

That kind of thing. And you know it. This is the Dan Le Batard Show.

00:30:57

Roy, did I just hear you say back to Tyler Herro real fast that he's the 6th leading scorer in Heat history?

00:31:01

7,664 points.

00:31:04

I have to admit, that's higher than I thought he was.

00:31:07

Yeah, makes sense.

00:31:08

Well, it is a scoring time in the league, but you were perfectly fine, uh, down— or upgrading him from 20 to 15, but it's where you stopped.

00:31:16

I still will stop there.

00:31:17

Yeah, but you weren't doing any of the counting on who were the better scorers.

00:31:21

No, no, I was in my head. I can start rattling off.

00:31:23

I'd love to hear that.

00:31:24

I'd like to hear you just do that.

00:31:25

Can you start counting in your head right now?

00:31:27

We're just talking about—

00:31:27

no, just start counting scores. Yeah, you think you're gonna name—

00:31:32

The Big 3 easy. Jimmy Butler.

00:31:34

Uh, hold on, you say Big 3 easy like he was a better scorer than Chris Bosh.

00:31:38

That's right.

00:31:38

Chris Bosh, come on. All right, you can take Tyler Herro, I'll take Chris Bosh on offense.

00:31:43

That's not what we're saying.

00:31:44

We're talking about offense.

00:31:45

Who was a scorer?

00:31:46

Hardaway for sure.

00:31:48

Please back me up here.

00:31:49

Well, he, uh, Hardaway was not efficient as a scorer.

00:31:52

He's not in the top 10.

00:31:53

He scored, but he was not an efficient scorer.

00:31:56

I'm not gonna back Yeah, he's—

00:31:57

that's crazy. You guys, you guys are high.

00:31:59

Bosh is a better player. Tyler's a better scorer.

00:32:02

I mean, Bosh has like— Bosh is not just a defensive player.

00:32:05

Just because you do that shooting motion doesn't prove anything.

00:32:08

You did.

00:32:08

You tried to prove your point with a left-handed jumper.

00:32:12

You did do that. I like the lefty though.

00:32:14

Which is exactly what Bosh had.

00:32:16

He's right. You proved nothing.

00:32:18

You guys are holding it against Bosh that he had to like take a lesser role and didn't get the numbers.

00:32:22

Yes.

00:32:23

When Bosh was alone here, he was our best scorer.

00:32:25

Bosh is 7th. He's behind Herro.

00:32:27

I need to make a clarification here because I understand Chris's point and I don't want to get lost in the weeds. Okay. Chris Bosh is indeed a great scorer. When he was in Toronto by himself, he did more scoring more efficiently than Tyler Herro, indisputably. So this is a discussion we can have. But what I'm talking about is just pure ball handling scoring where the offense—

00:32:52

For a guard.

00:32:53

Iso, iso scored.

00:32:55

And, and I'm, I'm okay with having the conversation. If you're putting Tyler Herro anywhere in Chris Bosh's class, then you're talking about a top 15, top 10 scorer for the Miami Heat.

00:33:07

Well, for me, that was easy.

00:33:07

Well, go ahead, because you've only—

00:33:08

Let me, let me, let me—

00:33:09

give me time.

00:33:10

You've only named 4.

00:33:10

I will find—

00:33:11

Well, you said you were going to do it easily, and now you're going on 100 times.

00:33:14

What about the time Eddie Jones with Shawn Leonard?

00:33:17

Oh, no, no, no, no, no, no.

00:33:18

Oh, terrible. All right, Shawn Leonard.

00:33:19

Your list is falling apart.

00:33:22

No, you've really fallen apart.

00:33:24

Glenn Rice!

00:33:25

Yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.

00:33:27

Glenn Rice.

00:33:27

4th.

00:33:28

Give me time. I, I can give you till the rest of time. You're gonna have trouble with this when you already went to Voshon Leonard.

00:33:35

Like, I was just trying to get Zazz on my side.

00:33:36

You already embarrassed— but you can't get anybody on your side with Voshon Leonard.

00:33:40

Yeah, well, not say PJ Brown, Tony.

00:33:43

Tony, I thought I saw you trying to frame Chris.

00:33:47

I saw you. Me?

00:33:48

Yes, I saw you whisper that to Chris to try and frame him. Uh, I want to Let's talk about something else here. I know you guys were getting on me yesterday for talking too much about injuries in football. The status of Baker Mayfield is kind of funny in a way that isn't funny, where the Bucs are saying, well, it could be 3 to 6 weeks. It depends on when he can grip a football.

00:34:13

Yeah.

00:34:13

That's, that's the qualifier they're making. They're like, well, it'll be 3 weeks if he can grip the football. It'll be 6 weeks if he can't grip the football. But when they said of Barkoff yesterday, 10 to 12 weeks were Were you and Roy, were you relieved by that as a, as a guesstimate?

00:34:31

I'm not relieved by anything surrounding Barkov right now, but I don't know that it's they are saying 10 to 12 weeks. It appears to be one person said 10 to 12 weeks and everyone else is denying it.

00:34:44

Yeah, the, the top insider for the sport, Elliot Freeman, who's the Adam Schefter for the NHL, said no, it's not the worst-case scenario. But it's definitely not 10 to 12 weeks.

00:34:54

And, and here's Paul Maurice yesterday upon being told that report of 10 to 12 weeks.

00:35:00

Do not bet your hard-earned money on that one.

00:35:03

Do not.

00:35:03

Yeah, that's just— I know you can bet on everything these days. Hang on to your cash, truly. If I don't know, nobody else does. That's fair. Is there anything you could say on just the type of injury that it is?

00:35:15

Just lower body.

00:35:17

Lower body. Come Come on, what is the mystery? Why is there a mystery around an injury?

00:35:22

Hockey loves that.

00:35:22

I know they do, and hockey should stop that. In every other sport, you know what the injury is, you know what surgery was had or wasn't had, you know when the player will be back, upper body, lower body. Come on, hockey, join the 21st century. You're welcome aboard. Ridiculous that they have such a shroud of mystery around Barkov's injury. It's silly. It's unnecessary.

00:35:46

They do that because they don't want the opponents to target the injury when they're—

00:35:50

I mean, you could say that about any athlete in any sport though, and I know that hockey is extraordinarily violent in that way, but it's still not a reason to, to be so duplicitous.

00:36:02

It is, it is a reason.

00:36:03

Well, it's the reason they use it.

00:36:05

But it's a good reason. If the opponent's going to target the injury, how is that not a good reason? Like, in what world is that not a good reason? If you had that injury and you didn't want opponents to target that injury, and in the sport they were perpetually targeting an Because they're cruel and inhumane that way, and competitiveness of this regard has very few morals. Wouldn't you want to be protected by an air of mystery?

00:36:32

Okay, you're giving hockey an excuse it doesn't deserve. There's no excuse to call it a lower body injury instead of just saying it's an injury.

00:36:41

I just gave you the excuse. They target the— I keep giving— you say there's no reason and I'm giving you the reason. You say there's no excuse, I'm giving you the excuse.

00:36:50

Okay, do you think Do you think upcoming opponents of the Panthers—

00:36:54

Yes.

00:36:55

Yes.

00:36:55

Yes.

00:36:55

Yes.

00:36:56

Yes.

00:36:56

Yes.

00:36:56

How about you listen to my question first?

00:36:58

No.

00:36:59

Do you think upcoming opponents of the Panthers rely on what is stated by the team? Everybody knows it's a left knee injury. You don't need Paul Maurice to admit that. So why the secrecy? Why the secrecy?

00:37:17

Greg, it's not just hits. These guys have weapons. They have sticks in their hands that they can target.

00:37:22

I mean, I'm with my dad though. The scouting, they know where these injuries are for the most part.

00:37:25

Of course they do.

00:37:25

Like, are there small examples where they might get something through? For the most part, teams know.

00:37:29

Well, let me ask you, let me just ask you a simple question. Which should Paul Maurice care more about? Perhaps gaining some small advantage that protects his player or pleasing Greg Cody by giving him information that Greg Cody wants? Which do you think that Paul Ryan should be governed by? Should I give the media information that they crave because the media is nosy and greedy and feels entitled to everything, or should I try to, wherever it is that I can, if I don't have control and am a control freak, try to give my team some small semblance of COVID Can we put it on the poll?

00:38:06

Let me see if I get this correctly. Dan Le Batard is saying I'm fine with every sport being super secretive about injuries.

00:38:14

You didn't say that.

00:38:15

Well, if it's good for the NHL, why isn't it good for football? When a player goes down in football, why do we have to know what the injury is and when to expect them back? I mean, the fans pay thousands of dollars to go to a single game. Why do they have any right to information about their players?

00:38:32

Oh no, they'll tell you when they're gonna come back. They're just not telling you what the injury is.

00:38:35

The Panthers aren't telling us when Barkley's gonna come back.

00:38:37

Well, that's because Paul Maurice is a gaslighter, okay? Okay, and I love Paul Maurice, I do. I told him to his face and he told me we love each other, but he is a gaslighter, okay? Because Brad Marchand was gonna miss at least the first month. He returned game 3 of the season, all right?

00:38:52

Can you guys give me some information on this? It was said 10 to 12 weeks. Everyone's denying 10 to 12 weeks. What's real here? What's true? We don't know?

00:39:00

We don't know.

00:39:01

We don't know anything?

00:39:02

Because it's hockey, that's why we don't know anything.

00:39:04

The doctors are still looking at him, by the way.

00:39:06

The doctors are still looking at him. Greg Cody doesn't want any more excuses.

00:39:11

Chris, say James Wilson.

00:39:13

They got 3 minutes, folks.
