Hello, this is Captain JB up here in Skycropter 4, and there's a— what are we looking at today? Well, there's a little bit of a congestion over there.

00:00:15

JB, you lost your license. Yeah, bring the chopper back. You lost your— you're not supposed to—

00:00:20

we're going to switch to other programming here. Welcome to SmartLess.

00:00:24

SmartLess.

00:00:25

SmartLess.

00:00:37

Less.

00:00:38

Smart.

00:00:39

Less. Doesn't Jason kind of look like he just woke up and he just woke up? He's going to have a bowl of cereal and watch cartoons.

00:00:51

I've had cereal. I've had, I've had my granola, my sugar-free, gluten-free granola with my unsweetened almond milk. I want to just blow my brains out.

00:01:00

That sounds like Jesus.

00:01:03

Just halfway describing it. It's just terrible.

00:01:07

You're finally getting it. You're finally getting it.

00:01:10

My sugar-free yerba mate.

00:01:13

Fuck, it looks like urine.

00:01:14

It's not— it's not worth it, right, Will? Didn't you say I was going to— I was going to die without a whole lot of water retention, but it'll— I'll be young.

00:01:22

And remember, the whole idea is I was going to be at your bedside eating a sundae with 30 years to go, right?

00:01:28

And me and my wooden teeth will be sitting in a casket.

00:01:31

Um, I, uh, I got like a really—

00:01:36

like, you got like a sort of sexy, like, post-sex look. Did you just—

00:01:39

I'm saying, right?

00:01:41

Do— well, does the hand count? Oh no, no, I don't do that.

00:01:46

Talk to the hand. Keep talking to the hand. Keep talking.

00:01:51

I just, uh, I'm just— I was telling Sean I just did some reading. That's all. This is just me and reading, reading.

00:01:57

This is reading for the— for the— for the movie you're doing?

00:02:00

Yeah, for maybe what might follow. You know, we're hustlers, you know?

00:02:06

We are hustlers.

00:02:07

We're constantly getting hired and fired, and you gotta try to build a bridge to the next check.

00:02:15

That's right. Always.

00:02:16

Yep. I know.

00:02:18

Why don't we just stop?

00:02:20

How about we just stop? Let's just stop.

00:02:23

You know, because you know what? I hear it from you if we stopped.

00:02:25

Let's just chat.

00:02:27

We'll just chat once a week.

00:02:28

Just chat.

00:02:29

You know, and we don't have to do any reading, and we don't have to do any—

00:02:34

You know, it hurts for me. Crazy hours and being away from our families.

00:02:40

Oh my God, your voice is kind of wormly.

00:02:43

Well, I'm here and lonely in New York.

00:02:45

I know. I'm going to be there soon, JB. And for the first couple of weeks, I'm going to be across the street from you until I move in to my place.

00:02:54

Yeah?

00:02:55

Yeah, I'm going to be right there. So I'll come and spoon you at night.

00:02:58

I'm there in June, late June.

00:03:00

We're good.

00:03:01

We're going to be good. So, yeah, JB, but I'm going to— I knew that was coming.

00:03:07

See, that's what's generous about us three. We each take turns at setting each other up to hurt our own feelings.

00:03:13

Now, JB, do you like being isolated like that by yourself there and all that stuff?

00:03:17

I do.

00:03:18

You know, I was thinking the other day that I have lived in a number of these temporary situations because of work in various places around. Yeah. And I was actually— I was thinking, well, I'm kind of surprised that I've made a friend of that, and I'm kind of comfortable with that because, you know, you know me. I am so— I'm so lonely. Locked and, and committed and comfortable in my, in my cave at home. Like, I don't, I don't leave.

00:03:44

But you create a cave, you create a cave everywhere you go. It's true.

00:03:48

I'm good about, like, immediately, just every time you get into rental.

00:03:52

I remember in Atlanta when I was living in that building underneath, beneath you, you had your cave there with your couch and your thing, right?

00:03:57

Yeah. The couch has got to be in a situation where I can be laying down perpendicular. Uh, yes, so that I'm looking across my body, over my feet, right to the TV.

00:04:07

Yeah, the couch is again perpendicular to television. Yeah.

00:04:12

And then if I've got that, I'm comfy.

00:04:14

Remember on tour, every hotel, immediately couch right in the corner and then the TV on.

00:04:20

JB would— right in the corner.

00:04:20

You come out to Long Island, you get to my house, everybody's outside and JB's on the couch.

00:04:24

I know, but that's your— but then unfortunately, that's usually, that's usually the host's spot. That's your spot.

00:04:30

No, no, because remember I had those two—

00:04:32

you do the corner.

00:04:33

I have those two corners.

00:04:33

Yeah, you do the other. Why do you do that?

00:04:35

Why not? But every single Yeah. And every single time you come over here, Jay, you got your spot on the couch exactly how you just described.

00:04:42

And I feel bad that this must be— this is the prime spot. Sean, I'm sorry, I'm in your spot. Will, I'm sorry, I'm in your spot.

00:04:48

And you guys don't—

00:04:49

you don't care.

00:04:50

No, but that's your spot.

00:04:51

But I do the same. Like, last summer, somebody came in and we were watching soccer, and Bradley and I were in that same configuration, and we were both asleep. And my brother came in. We were both on the couch midgame.

00:05:04

What's your brother's name?

00:05:05

Quickie.

00:05:05

Chuck. Chuck.

00:05:06

Chuck.

00:05:06

Chuck.

00:05:06

Okay, good. Wait, Jay, but Jason—

00:05:06

Chuck our nick. Quick shout out to Chuck Ardeno.

00:05:10

Hey, Chuck.

00:05:12

Hey, Charles.

00:05:13

Charles.

00:05:14

So wait, but Chase, I just need to know that you don't get— so after a while of being isolated, don't you miss people and the opposite of that?

00:05:24

I would if in those situations when I'm isolated by myself in a foreign city, I'm not spending 12 hours during the day with hundreds of people and my new family on each one of those, right? So it's again, it's that black-white situation.

00:05:39

There's no—

00:05:39

Are we now able to— Are we allowed to talk about your new family? Because I didn't know if the public knew about this or whatever.

00:05:45

That one, not that one. I'm talking about this.

00:05:46

This is exciting news that we get to do it. Uh, we've just scooped Harvey Levin, TMZ. This is fun.

00:05:53

3 children.

00:05:54

Yeah, it's amazing. Um, I'll tell you what's amazing.

00:05:59

Oh really?

00:06:00

Our surprise guest, he pulled up a chair. One of the greats when it comes to comedy.

00:06:04

Uh-huh.

00:06:05

He, he got his start on MADtv.

00:06:08

Oh, that's—

00:06:08

yeah, he's been in over 100 episodes. Uh, he's been in so many things that we love. These days he's in a show that he created with Mindy Kaling that's coming back for season 2 called Running Point. But he's also, uh, lately been known as one of the breakout amazing hilarious stars of Apple TV's The Studio. Guys, it's our friend, our friend, it's Ike Barinholtz!

00:06:32

First, can I just shout out Chuck Arnett real quick?

00:06:35

Is that— of course, Chucky!

00:06:38

Yeah, yeah, my guy.

00:06:40

Uh, oh, Ike, this is great. This is— this— now this is a guest, Will.

00:06:44

Yeah, I know.

00:06:45

This is a guest. This is one of the guys.

00:06:47

This is one of the guys. Ike, I'm so glad you're here. I— you're one— I was thinking about this morning. I was— I was pouring myself a coffee, uh, this morning, and I said to myself, I said—

00:06:56

great, fill us in. What did you put? Sugar in it too?

00:06:59

No, stevia. Well, if I'm being real, Truvia, and then some Ripple half and half because it's so good.

00:07:12

Ripple. You're talking about cheap liquor.

00:07:14

Yeah, so, and it's pea-based. I, I— you and I met, you and I met. I don't know, it is pea-based. It's made in Canada, by the way, don't you know, eh?

00:07:23

Oh, is that right?

00:07:25

Hey, hey bud, I got some peas here. Should we make some half and half? Let her ripple.

00:07:32

Give her.

00:07:35

I can give her, bud. Oh, is that right?

00:07:38

Hey, wait, where are you?

00:07:39

So Ike, I just want to say, before we find you are. Ike, we've known each other for about 20 years, and I was thinking, yeah, and I was thinking, Ike is one of those guys you're always happy to see. Yeah, yeah, in person, come on, on the screen, doing stuff. It's a rare— no, you're, you're one of the rare ones.

00:07:57

Is there something darker there that you've kept hidden from?

00:08:00

Let's talk about it. Yeah, uh, first time my dad beat the hell out of me.

00:08:05

Yep.

00:08:06

Oh wow.

00:08:06

Hey guys, I just want to say first, I'm a huge fan of this show. I'm a massive fan.

00:08:11

I've listened to, I think, every episode really early.

00:08:15

This is what— this is my plan, is to really—

00:08:17

What's your favorite? What's your least favorite? No kidding.

00:08:19

Of the three of us?

00:08:20

Uh, we can't name names.

00:08:22

You can't name names. Last time I saw Ike in person, I surprised him one morning he was staying at Amy's apartment in New York, and I was coming to pick up a jacket or something.

00:08:29

Can we stop there?

00:08:30

Yeah, yeah. No, that's not breaking news. It's not breaking news. They're not together anymore.

00:08:35

No, no, no, she let me her apartment while I was doing a Broadway show.

00:08:39

He was doing a Broadway show!

00:08:41

Greatest thing ever. Yeah, place— My God.

00:08:43

So, uh, so Ike was doing— Ike was doing, uh, this play on Broadway.

00:08:48

Yes.

00:08:49

And you were kind of right in the middle. Were you just starting? I forget.

00:08:52

We were— we were right in the middle when I saw you.

00:08:54

What—

00:08:54

what— what was it?

00:08:56

Yeah, I was Chicago. I was playing Roxie Hart.

00:08:58

Um, it was—

00:08:59

I got blasted by the critics, and rightfully so, quite frankly.

00:09:02

They didn't buy it, huh?

00:09:03

They didn't like it. They didn't like my take on it because I played it just as like a bro.

00:09:07

Yeah, you followed Chita Rivera.

00:09:09

Yeah, it didn't catch.

00:09:11

You didn't try to do anything feminine at all with it? You just went total bro take?

00:09:16

Yeah, no, like, yeah, I reached for the gun.

00:09:19

Now, Ike, have you done a bunch of theater, or was that just the one pop there in Chicago?

00:09:24

I started with, you know, improv in Chicago back in the day, but that was my first time doing the Great White Way. Can I still say that?

00:09:31

Yeah.

00:09:31

Did people come backstage and visit you after the show?

00:09:34

Oh, no, we're not doing this.

00:09:35

Hang on, shut up.

00:09:36

We're creating a consensus here.

00:09:38

Did people come and say bahado you after the show?

00:09:40

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:09:42

And did you enjoy that?

00:09:43

I did, yeah. I mean, we had friends come backstage, but then you do the stage door, the stage door, which is crazy.

00:09:49

It's called Act 3.

00:09:51

It's respect.

00:09:51

Act 3, you go out and you schmooze and you sign autographs and take selfies. And that really touched me, I thought. And you see the actors, right?

00:09:57

And you give it to other people because you do it for them, because it's not all about you, right? Go ahead, Jason.

00:10:02

It's not all about me.

00:10:03

Hold, Sean, why wouldn't we call that Act 4 outside? Are we talking about a typical 3-act show?

00:10:08

Because usually things are in 2 acts. Yeah, no, aren't they?

00:10:10

Usually it's a 3-act play.

00:10:12

Well, in plays and musicals, there's two acts.

00:10:14

God, I got to get you the internet.

00:10:16

What, just because of the, uh, the whatchamacallit, the halftime there?

00:10:20

The intermission?

00:10:21

Yeah.

00:10:23

Is there any show during halftime?

00:10:25

Hang on, I'm going to do everybody a favor. Jason, I'm about to do your favor. Today's guest, it's Ike Barinholtz. Hey, Ike!

00:10:31

Quick edit point there.

00:10:34

We can just take it all over. No, you like people coming back because Jason's right that we are trying to figure out— this is a long-term study that we're doing over here at Smart I hear that you are supposed—

00:10:48

if you are somewhat famous—

00:10:49

oh my God, here we go—

00:10:50

you are somewhat obligated to go backstage afterwards regardless of whether you know anyone in the cast and go, you know, say hi to them and tell them what you thought about the show. And I've just, I've just thought that that would be presumptuous and also would delay those actors getting home and resting.

00:11:06

Ike, thoughts?

00:11:07

I, I— it really depends on the celebrity. Um, like for instance, Jason, if you were there and you came backstage, it would be so exciting. We would take pictures, everyone would be excited. But if like, I don't know, uh-oh, careful, Rob Schneider showed up— I'm just using a name I'm throwing out there, shots fired— but like, you know what I mean?

00:11:26

Or someone who was like, oh, we gotta stay behind for a person X, Y, or Z, right?

00:11:30

Yeah. So, so it could, it could be— it goes both ways.

00:11:33

How fun would it be like if you were backstage and all of a sudden Jason came back and he just actually said it? He on the night just said, hey, I'm famous.

00:11:41

So you're in, so let's talk. And where should we sit? 'Cause I've got notes. Do you want to just go back into your dressing room?

00:11:48

Is it locked? Just famous guy to famous guy, you know?

00:11:52

I know what you were going for, but let me tell you what's reading.

00:11:57

Well, you can go ahead and take the wink out of it. That would be— that's a lot. That's a lot.

00:12:02

Now, I was sitting about midhouse, and I really wasn't feeling— there in the third act, You are midhouse?

00:12:08

I hate famous Jason. I hate famous Jason so much.

00:12:11

Wait, the fact that you have at the ready, "I know what you were going for, but here's what's reading." Like, that you have that in your head ready to go.

00:12:21

Well, I'm getting ready to direct over here, you know?

00:12:23

I'm in prep. Yeah, he's in prep. I saw a video of JB and our buddy Sam Rockwell at the Knicks game, and it was footage at MSG, and they're walking, and Jason's talking to him. It looked like he was giving him notes on the way to their seats. And we have a scene started shooting yet. And if I'm Rockwell, I'm like, hey man, I just came to watch the fucking Knicks game.

00:12:45

I know what you're planning on doing. Let me tell you how that's probably gonna read.

00:12:49

And Sammy's so nice, he probably just took it. But God, what exhausting.

00:12:54

Um, shout out before we're done here, shout out to the nice folks over there at MSG for accommodating me.

00:12:59

They are the best.

00:13:00

Front row center. Thank you, Trey, and the group over there. Um, it's just— then those Knicks, they brought it home that night.

00:13:06

They're a classy organization.

00:13:07

I don't know when this is airing, but, uh, it's—

00:13:09

they're looking good.

00:13:10

They look pretty good. That's what Sean's been— Sean's been saying this all season.

00:13:13

Yeah, so just on a loop, on a fucking loop of weapons.

00:13:17

Are you guys talking about Knicks?

00:13:18

Yeah.

00:13:19

Oh, here we go. Spell it, spell it, Sean. Spell it real quick.

00:13:22

K-N—

00:13:23

and what's it short for?

00:13:25

Nicaragua.

00:13:26

Knickerbockers is Nicaragua.

00:13:28

Oh, is it really Knickerbocker?

00:13:29

Yeah, it is.

00:13:30

Yeah.

00:13:30

Higher, higher.

00:13:31

Is it really Knickerbocker? Listen, higher.

00:13:37

And just Just a dash more gay. Okay, and still rolling.

00:13:41

Okay, is it really Knickerbocker?

00:13:51

Welcome to the show, it's Ike Barinholtz! Another cut point.

00:13:57

Wow.

00:13:58

Um, hey, now listen, I was gonna— I was gonna have a different intro for Sean, but I was going to open with because Sean, because I, because Ike, Ike, you're from Chicago and obviously the question is I'm from Glen Ellyn. Oh, Glen Ellyn. Have you been to Glen Ellyn?

00:14:16

I have been to Glen Ellyn. I've been to all the Glens. A lot of Glens in Chicago.

00:14:20

Yeah, Glenview. Have you ever been to Portillo's?

00:14:25

I've been to Portillo's many a time, my friend. Chocolate cake shake. That's the best, by the way. They have a milkshake where they dump a big slice of cake.

00:14:32

Jason said in Ozark, chocolate cake shake from Portillo's, and he doesn't even know that.

00:14:37

Oh my God!

00:14:37

Kathryn Hahn, by the way, is watching Ozark now.

00:14:40

The best. Oh my God, she just sent me a text yesterday, as a matter of fact. That's weird, you must be working with her. Yes, yes. So she sent me a text, she said, "Hey, I'm really embarrassingly late on this, but you're great in Ozark," or something like that. Who says that? Kathryn Hahn, the greatest love of my life. And I said, I was just so excited that she's seeing it for the first time. I was just like, oh yeah. I was so tempted to say, "What's your favorite part?" Yeah, she would come to set and she's like, "Ozark is amazing." We're like, "We know." I wonder why she started watching that. I wonder if it—

00:15:15

She must have tapped everything else out.

00:15:19

All her subscriptions had maxed out and—

00:15:23

She found an old iPad that belonged to a neighbor and it was loaded up.

00:15:29

Han told me a story. She, um— had Laura Dern's phone number, and she would text Laura Dern sometimes and had, like, a little bit of a texting relationship with her. And then when David Lynch passed away, Han reached out and was like, "I'm so sorry about your collaborator. I know how much he meant to you." And the person said, "I don't think this is who you think it is." Oh, no. And it was—

00:15:54

The worst.

00:15:55

Tina Fey's stand-in from This Is Where I Leave You.

00:16:02

And there's years of texts, 10 years, who she thought was Laura Dern, just staying in loose casual contact with over the years.

00:16:15

Fucking way. Yeah.

00:16:16

Oh God, wait a minute, Ike, where are you? Are you in New York right now?

00:16:21

I'm in, I'm in London, mate. Here, here's proof I'm in London. Look, the bottle lid doesn't come off.

00:16:25

I know, how annoying was that? On all the plastic bottles. They don't come off, they just hang.

00:16:30

Is that true?

00:16:30

Yeah, it's gonna hang there.

00:16:31

That's actually— that's, that's not a bad design idea.

00:16:34

It's kind of smart, actually, we think.

00:16:35

But it's hard to screw it back on.

00:16:37

And then you do sometimes, like—

00:16:39

yeah, I was wondering why you had your— you got your mic, uh, jacked on your, uh, on your rolling luggage.

00:16:44

No video.

00:16:47

Is that on your luggage?

00:16:49

Rob was like, you got some books, right? I was like, no, this hotel room doesn't have any books, so I have it on my roller bag.

00:16:55

I love you.

00:16:56

You said, wait, wait, it's no video, right?

00:16:57

It's no video.

00:16:58

It is a great composition there with your little frame there. There's one little wheel bottom left.

00:17:05

Are you shooting— are you shooting the studio over there right now? Is that what's happening?

00:17:08

We are actually here for— we're here for the BAFTAs, mate. We got nominated for a bloody BAFTA.

00:17:13

Oh, that's great. Congratulations.

00:17:15

Yeah, it's very cool. It's weird though, it's that we're best foreign show, so all the other shows that are nominated, some of them I've heard of, but a lot of them are like BBC One shows that are like, "Are you quite through now, sir?" You know what I mean? Just like weird British shows that you don't know in the States.

00:17:32

Well, that's fun. Congrats on the thing. So, so, dude, you've done so much stuff we mentioned. So let's talk. You did start in Chicago. We're talking about—

00:17:41

Did you grow up in Chicago, Ike?

00:17:43

Yes, I grew up in Uptown, exactly 1 mile away from Wrigley Field.

00:17:48

Oh, wow.

00:17:49

In the city. Right in the heart of the city right there.

00:17:51

Yeah, in the city. Wrigley, not some bullshit 80 miles away, you know, from nothing but Chicago, nothing but fucking tire tread marks all over the road.

00:18:01

No, I used to— well, Wrigley, Wrigley, near Wrigley is the— is Boystown. I used to spend—

00:18:05

I basically honestly kind of grew up in Boystown.

00:18:08

Yeah, all the gays everywhere.

00:18:09

We would go to the gay parade.

00:18:11

It's super gay around Wrigley Field.

00:18:14

Yeah.

00:18:14

Oh yeah, is that right?

00:18:15

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:18:18

We'll be right back.

00:18:22

And now back to the show.

00:18:26

So you grew up in the city, and I know that you—

00:18:28

so you're sort of Second City and all that.

00:18:30

Yeah. Was improv— you kind of— you started in improv on stage.

00:18:34

Big improv guy. I saw— yeah, I— college didn't really work, and then I went to the Improv Olympics, like, 10-year anniversary show, and I saw Amy Poehler, I saw Adam McKay. Tim Meadows in particular was so, so funny that I was like, I'm gonna sign up for improv classes. And I really just immersed myself in that whole—

00:18:56

that's amazing—

00:18:56

the trifecta. The, the trifecta.

00:18:58

Were there people who were kind of in your year back then who you still work with or tight with? Like, who else?

00:19:04

Oh yeah, I mean, Jack McBrayer is a very dear friend.

00:19:07

No, we don't consider him— you don't—

00:19:08

can—

00:19:08

you don't like Jack?

00:19:09

No, Jack is a persona.

00:19:12

Yeah, he's not, he's not that great. But like Seth Meyers was kind of my generation. Sudeikis was around there. John Lutz, like that crew was around there. Lutz, one of the all-time—

00:19:23

one of the all-time greats. Love Lutz.

00:19:25

Yeah, I mean, what, what, between Second City, uh, uh, UCB, and Groundlings, I mean, if there was like a Little Olympics going, how do you think those, those three would, would—

00:19:37

well, there's so much, there's so much crossover.

00:19:39

Right.

00:19:39

Yeah, there is a lot of crossover now. I mean, Groundlings is more like—

00:19:43

UCB doesn't go back that far, right? Which is the oldest?

00:19:46

Yeah, like in like '95 or so, Amy and, and the, the guys kind of left Chicago.

00:19:53

And Matt and Matt and, and Ian. So Del Close, he knows this, Del Close was, was the guy at Improv Olympic and they all studied with him and he was your director.

00:19:59

Was Groundlings or, or Second City the oldest?

00:20:03

Second City's the oldest. Second City was like 1962, like Ed Asner was in the original Second City.

00:20:09

Oh wow, really?

00:20:09

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:20:09

So there was That goes way back. Groundlings, I think, is more like mid-'70s, uh, uh, hippies.

00:20:17

So I— and did you not go— am I— do I have this wrong? Do you— did you go to Amsterdam?

00:20:22

Sorry, Sean, we're recording something.

00:20:24

So wait one sec. Look at, uh, this is, uh, Favreau. This is at, uh, Second City. Favreau, that's me right there. That's Jack McBrayer right next to me.

00:20:34

Wait, were you in a touring company?

00:20:35

No, that was— we just went back for like And, and Ramis, Harold Ramis right there. Oh, and then we just went back for like an anniversary. But the fact that you said Jack McBrayer, Second City, that's crazy. All those people that came out there, including yourself, from that whole troupe and all of those things in Chicago. It's just, it doesn't happen anymore.

00:20:53

It feels like the mid-'90s improv scene was, was why it was really fun. And then I would work at Second City as like a busboy, and I would see like a, like Tina when she first started, um, like Scott Adsit, Brian Stack, a lot of the, you know, Conan guys, Jerry Minor, just amazing.

00:21:09

Amazing.

00:21:10

Yeah, Jerry Stack, one of the all-time greats. One of the— yeah, one of the—

00:21:14

you know, Willie, I— anytime anybody brings up these, these, these folks, you, you know them all. Um, but I— did you ever do any time at one of these, um, improv groups?

00:21:24

No, I was too dumb. Like, I was living in New York and there wasn't that same thing, and I wish I had. I didn't—

00:21:28

yeah, but you were going to a lot of them and you were hanging out with them a lot. This is even before Amy, right? It's probably how you met Amy.

00:21:33

So when Amy, Amy first came to New York with Matt and Matt and Ian as UCB. They did Bucket of Truth, and they did it at the West Bank Downstairs. And my then— one of my then agents, a man by the name of Peter Principato—

00:21:49

My current manager.

00:21:50

Mike's current manager said to me, you've got to go and see this group that I represent doing this thing called Bucket of Truth. So I went there, and that was 1996. They just moved in January of '96. I know all this. They moved in January of '96 to New York. I went and saw Bucket of Truth. With my buddy, our buddy Duff, and my then-girlfriend Missy Yeager.

00:22:10

I know Duff.

00:22:11

Yeah. But anyway, I remember seeing those guys and being like, "Holy shit." And this is what was going on in Chicago, what all you guys were doing. And it wasn't in New York. And they brought it to New York, UCB. Amy and those guys. But it didn't exist. I wish I had done it. I was too dumb. And by then, I got to know everybody, obviously, because I was around all those people.

00:22:29

Well, do you remember in, like, 2000, maybe '02 or '03 together, we did a reading of Jerry Lewis's The Day the Clown Cried?

00:22:36

Fuck yes.

00:22:37

You, Me, Cross plays John Glaser.

00:22:40

John Glaser. Uh, God, who else? Rob Huebel.

00:22:44

And for my sister, The Day the Clown Cried is about a clown that visits the kids in the Holocaust.

00:22:49

Yes.

00:22:49

And it's a movie that famously was never released, right?

00:22:53

Yeah.

00:22:53

Yeah. It was Jerry Lewis plays a Jewish clown who entertains the children as they're about to be murdered. And for some reason they never released it.

00:23:01

Yeah.

00:23:01

But was it Jerry Lewis that killed it? Did he like try to bury it, or was it— was it the financier?

00:23:07

No, he—

00:23:07

I think Jerry Lewis himself was like, no, no, no, we can't, we can't show anyone this.

00:23:12

But the rumor is, the rumor is that Harry Shearer has a copy of it. Like, is that—

00:23:16

yes, really?

00:23:17

There are some clips on YouTube. There's some clips on YouTube. You could type it in, see like, like little small moments and stuff.

00:23:22

Oh, really?

00:23:23

The whole thing isn't out there yet.

00:23:24

Whoa. Yeah, we did that. I forgot about the— and there was a crazy— that was so much fun. And everybody, uh And not just everybody on stage, but everybody in the audience. It was so much people of that era.

00:23:36

It was the first time I felt cool on stage doing comedy. Like, there was cool people around, and I felt very cool for the first time. Holy shit.

00:23:43

Now let's go back. I heard you say something like college did not work out for you or something like that. It was a bit of a breeze over there. Let's double back to that and let's talk about— So from day one—

00:23:56

He loves pain points. He loves hitting pain points. So you show up, you got your suitcases, and go from there.

00:24:02

I, I want— I went into Boston University hoping I would be a politician.

00:24:07

And then really, really?

00:24:08

Yeah, yeah.

00:24:09

Are you still interested in politics?

00:24:11

Um, I, I'm disgusted by it, right?

00:24:14

Yeah.

00:24:14

Um, but I do—

00:24:15

yes, that's a yes.

00:24:16

I'm perverted. I know a lot about it.

00:24:17

We don't have to talk about politics, but I'm just, just curious. Okay, so you're studying poli sci at Boston U, so you're not a dummy.

00:24:23

I was going to, and then right away I went crazy where I was like, oh my God, if I'd smoked pot or done mushrooms before. That started happening quite a bit.

00:24:32

You started to have some bad—

00:24:33

and then I was just— the freedom of not having to do anything took me over, and I kind of went crazy for a couple weeks, um, and watched movies over and over again.

00:24:44

Yeah.

00:24:44

And like, I watched 2001 like 7 or 8 times in a week. Yeah. And so I kind of halfway through the semester was like, this isn't— I'm not—

00:24:54

I need more structure. Yeah.

00:24:55

And I just wasn't enjoying that. And so I—

00:25:00

You couldn't handle the freedom.

00:25:02

I couldn't handle the freedom. I felt bad for my parents, so I told them everything was status quo and it was going great. And when I came home and finished the year, my dad, as a reward, took me to Las Vegas and L.A. on a vacation because I finished my first year of college. And literally on the way to the airport, my mom called and was like, "I just got a letter from BU. They're kicking him out." and, um, that was problematic.

00:25:27

Trip's still on, right? Trip's still on. The trip was—

00:25:29

the trip was literally— we were done and flying back home, and like, we sat on a Southwest flight, and my dad for like 3 hours was like, "How could you do this to us?" And I was like, "I'm really sorry." But they— now they're very happy, and everything's good.

00:25:44

Of course they should be.

00:25:45

So, but so then— so then you stay in Chicago, and you just start some odd jobs and going to the comedy clubs. And at what point did you go all in on on having a conversation with your parents about, "I'm gonna pursue entertainment." They knew that I was really enjoying improv and everything.

00:26:03

And at that time, your kind of goal is to be on the Second City main stage and then eventually SNL. That's the ultimate trajectory. And after a few years, I auditioned for this theater group in Amsterdam called Boom Chicago that, you know, a lot of our friends have gone through. And that is where you are— Your job is acting. You don't have to have another day job. You just have to do shows at night. And I got hired them and my parents. I told them, hey, this is it, I'm leaving, I'm doing this now, I'm an actor. And they have been— they're like the most supportive parents. My dad became an actor, like, you know what I mean? It's like, great, it's crazy. They are, they are very, very proud.

00:26:37

Wait, wait, I, I'm now remembering the reason I brought up Sim. I think the first time we met was like 2001 or maybe 2002, and you and Josh Meyer, Seth's brother, came back from Amsterdam and came to Amy and our old, old apartment.

00:26:50

Yes.

00:26:51

Do you remember that?

00:26:51

Yeah, dude, that was back.

00:26:55

Yes.

00:26:55

Yes.

00:26:55

It was right after she got hired by SNL.

00:26:58

Yes.

00:26:59

Yeah, it was that first season because Seth got hired at the same time.

00:27:01

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:27:02

It's crazy.

00:27:03

Crazy.

00:27:03

I've known you a long time, Will.

00:27:04

That was 25 years ago, dude.

00:27:06

Yeah, it's nuts.

00:27:08

Whoa.

00:27:08

Okay.

00:27:08

It's crazy.

00:27:09

All right, so then they go, okay, great, you're going to do it. You're going to be— and they're supportive and very supportive. And do you have brothers and sisters?

00:27:23

Younger brother, and then he decided he wanted to be an actor too, and I was like, dude, don't do it. But he now— he works. He was on Superstore for years and creates shows and stuff. So we're like a— we're a showbiz family now. We're like— we're like the Arquette.

00:27:38

So Mom is the only one without a SAG card at this point?

00:27:41

Mom is the only one. We're trying to Taft-Hartley her and—

00:27:44

yeah, come on—

00:27:45

to like be on something. Um, yeah, but she— she'll be tough, but we'll get her there. We'll get you there, Peggy.

00:27:51

So, but how did you get dialed into that whole crew of all Comedy, how did you get in? What was your first foray into that world?

00:27:59

Well, what came— moved to LA with Seth Meyers and Josh Meyers and my buddy Dave, and, and for like a year and a half was like a busboy and just trying to break into stuff. But it was Mad TV was my first gig, right, with Josh Meyers. And we— I did 5 years on Mad TV.

00:28:15

Wow.

00:28:15

Um, which was—

00:28:16

I watched a lot of those. I used to love you and Josh on that, truly.

00:28:20

It was, it was, you know, it was one of those shows I loved doing it until I didn't. Um, it was tough at the time because SNL I think that's the best SNL cast ever, that like 2002 to 2008-ish, you know what I mean? That was just like Poehler and Will and Wiig and Fred, and it was just wild. And we would always get compared to them. And it was just tough because sometimes you wanted MAD to be a little bit better. You wanted it to kind of not have kind of like guests and stuff. But it was a great show.

00:28:53

Didn't you guys have like a half-hour jump start before? Did you guys come on at 11?

00:28:57

We did. We came on at 11, so we had a, a little bit of a head start.

00:29:01

And it was—

00:29:02

I will say it was very fun. My first TV show. I'm still friends with those guys. Like, Jordan was on there. Jordan Peele is like one of my best friends. And we had a cool— it was very fun. But towards the end, I was getting restless, and I was like, I need to be on a different show. I want to be on a sitcom. And then I left Mad TV and like literally did not work for like 3 and a half years, which was—

00:29:22

that is the curse of a series, right? You start feeling like all the things you're not being able to do, and then you leave, and it's like, oh, there's a lot trickets out here.

00:29:30

Who was the guy who famously did that? What was the guy? He was on that show. He was on NYPD Blue.

00:29:34

David Caruso, baby.

00:29:35

David Caruso.

00:29:37

Yeah.

00:29:37

Well, in fairness to him, there's a long list of folks that think—

00:29:42

He ended up having a very long career, and he had a big show after that, too. He was awesome.

00:29:45

Yeah, he did do CSI.

00:29:46

But then you did— and correct me if I'm wrong. So then after that, you do that and you do a couple of things here and there. But it was then The Mindy project, right? Was that— that was the next big—

00:29:59

basically, I did get— Danny McBride did cast me on Eastbound and Down at a time.

00:30:03

Okay, got it.

00:30:04

I just was not working, and that was like a big deal for me.

00:30:07

Yes, that show, that show, that, that group, uh, what—

00:30:10

oh, they're the best group.

00:30:12

They are the best. I just saw him. Yeah, I love them. They're so cool. They're so original. And that was the first time I went on to a show that I was a die-hard fan of.

00:30:21

So was it, was it a little nerve-wracking at the beginning then? Was it, was it what you thought it was gonna be as a— just as a viewer?

00:30:27

I was nervous enough just like, I hope I'm as funny as these guys, but I also had to be a baseball player. I had to be like the best pitcher in the world.

00:30:36

And you don't have a lot of baseball talent?

00:30:38

I have a little bit of baseball. I'm like a— I'm like a solid 5. Um, but it was— that was a little bit of pressure.

00:30:46

You don't look like you're throwing with your left hand, you know?

00:30:48

I don't look like— no, no, no. I've seen like bad— like Robert Redford's son in The Natural. The Natural. Like, when he throws it, it looks so bad. It looks so bad.

00:30:58

I, I'm not that bad, but I just saw a clip of The Natural the other day, and Robert Redford, you know, when he strikes out that guy in— when the train pulls over—

00:31:05

Joe Don Baker.

00:31:06

Yeah.

00:31:06

And it's— and, uh, Redford had a pretty good, uh, release.

00:31:09

He had skills.

00:31:10

He, he was a good athlete. You could tell. Yeah, good athlete. And yes, who's not? It's pretty clear when you watch those.

00:31:16

Yeah.

00:31:16

But yeah, there was pressure, but it was like so much fun, and I love those guys.

00:31:20

And from there, would you consider yourself the Redford of Eastbound Oh, for sure.

00:31:25

Yeah, for sure. Yeah, yeah, the Redford and the Newman, quite frankly.

00:31:28

And the Newman, of course. Yeah, whatever it is.

00:31:29

Both of them.

00:31:31

So you do Eastbound and Down with those guys, but then The Mindy Project you do for a few years. You guys did, like, a lot of episodes.

00:31:36

6 seasons, man.

00:31:37

Yeah, 6 seasons.

00:31:38

Wow.

00:31:39

It's crazy now. We complain about 10-episode shows, and it's like, we used to do 22 episodes. It was nuts.

00:31:44

A year? Every year?

00:31:44

Yeah.

00:31:45

Yeah.

00:31:45

It was nuts.

00:31:46

And through that process, you and Mindy get closer, 'cause you've ended up collaborating since then, and you guys have— written together. You guys created Running Point. I think I mentioned that.

00:31:56

Yeah, with Dave Stassen, my writing partner and best friend, who's the true showrunner. But the three of us, we love—

00:32:01

I mean, look, we're not here to talk about Dave, okay?

00:32:03

Can we just talk about him?

00:32:04

No, I mean, we're here to talk about you, okay, and Chuck Arnett, but we're not here to talk about Dave, okay?

00:32:10

I don't know, I don't know if Jason remembers this, but in like 2019, I sat next to Jason at the Emmys.

00:32:16

My wife and I said, that's not true, you and your wife He does not.

00:32:19

Wait, I think I do.

00:32:19

Wait, I think I do.

00:32:20

Right at the time—

00:32:21

Time to come back.

00:32:22

Some horrible, like, abortion ban hit Georgia.

00:32:26

Oh, Atlanta.

00:32:27

Yeah.

00:32:27

Yeah. And we were talking about it, and I was like, "Yeah, I actually do a lot of work with the ACLU." Uh-oh. And Jason goes, "Have they filed a lawsuit yet?" And I go, "You know what? I don't know." He goes, "Well, you really have your talking points in order, and they're lucky to have you as an ambassador." Wow. Like, locked and loaded, ready to go.

00:32:47

I didn't know him that well.

00:32:49

Oh my God, that is—

00:32:51

I figured we'd skip a few dates and I'd just get right to Hurtful. Sorry, I, I must have been nervous that night.

00:32:59

No, it was very funny. You were too busy winning multiple Emmys that day.

00:33:03

Nah, I didn't.

00:33:05

Um, Ozark won some, some Emmys.

00:33:07

Ozark won a lot.

00:33:08

That was— was that when I won for directing?

00:33:10

Maybe.

00:33:10

Yeah, I think—

00:33:11

here we go, a few SAG Awards.

00:33:13

He acts like—

00:33:13

let's go back. Is that when I won for directing?

00:33:16

I can't remember.

00:33:17

Oh, I for— oh, sorry, that's my you. Oh, you won for directing?

00:33:21

No, no, no, no, no, guys, just trim this part.

00:33:23

Um, or, or just, just—

00:33:25

why are you saying, why are you saying trimming but you're shaking your head no?

00:33:28

Wait, is my camera on?

00:33:32

Um, so, but, but I, I wanted to get like— so you— what's awesome is, is that you, that you do all these shows and stuff, and now you're kind of— you, you've expanded and you're, you're, you're writing and creating shows with Dave, your writing partner, and, and you guys are— and you're You've got a kind of a very robust career going in a lot of different ways. And you're doing— you're creating Running Point, you're on that. You're doing the studio with Seth and Evan, those guys, which is awesome. I mean, you're so good on that show.

00:34:06

Real busty right now.

00:34:07

Yeah, it's such a good show.

00:34:08

You are so good on that show, dude. It's amazing.

00:34:10

That's really nice of you guys. It's really fun. We're like— we got about 3 weeks left of shooting season 2, and it's been long but really fun and really good.

00:34:19

Yeah, I love that.

00:34:19

Went to Venice for 2 weeks. We shot for 2 weeks in Venice.

00:34:22

I saw that.

00:34:23

Yeah, with Madonna in the show.

00:34:26

Oh yeah, yeah.

00:34:29

And then you waited for me late to drop that sound. I'm like the Fred Norris of this show.

00:34:36

Hey Fred, by the way.

00:34:37

Okay, keep it real up in the field, guys. I'm just doing old, old—

00:34:43

I would love to.

00:34:44

What are you saying?

00:34:46

I would love to. I would love to.

00:34:49

Shut up.

00:34:50

Sit down, you idiot. Don't touch it, you idiot.

00:34:54

I told you not to be stupid, you moron.

00:34:57

Wait, so I— when you do—

00:35:01

sorry, Sean, what were you asking?

00:35:02

Yeah, Sean, what were you saying? Sean, did you want to say something?

00:35:04

Go for Sean. Wait, is that on your third button on your phone so it's always there and ready?

00:35:12

It's ready to go. It's so fun. I'm having a lot of fun right now. I'm so jacked up on coffee. Ike's here. Ike likes to fuck.

00:35:19

I'm in a yerba mate sweat.

00:35:22

Yeah.

00:35:22

Oh man, guys.

00:35:23

Okay, so Sean, you had something?

00:35:24

So I had a question about how do you balance family?

00:35:27

Oh, for fuck's sake, dude, are you for real?

00:35:31

What's your great fucking real work-life—

00:35:36

well, because like you said, you're like in Venice and you're doing this, you're doing like 18 shows at the same time, and then you— but you have how many kids? You have?

00:35:42

I have 3 daughters.

00:35:44

Come on. Wow, girl dad.

00:35:46

And I'm not home as much as I like, but my wife's boyfriend is a great guy. I'm sorry. And he— we— it was kind of rocky at first between me and him for obvious reasons, but now it's got him. He's like really good, and he's really good with my kids. And, um, you're not crying. Yeah, we're just kind of letting that ride.

00:36:04

Is he still doing the MMA stuff? Is he still into that? Yeah, the mixed martial arts.

00:36:08

Yeah.

00:36:08

Well, you guys Andrew Tate. You've heard of Andrew Tate?

00:36:12

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:36:13

He's actually not as bad as people say.

00:36:16

And how do your daughters get along with his 4 pit bulls? Like, pretty good, or—

00:36:20

Now, yes. Now they have the mouth guards, so they can't— Yeah, the muzzles. They can't bite now. But, but it was a little touch and go for a minute.

00:36:28

Oh my God. And we will be right back.

00:36:35

And back to the show.

00:36:38

How old are the little angels?

00:36:40

The little angel— hello, little angels.

00:36:43

They're listening.

00:36:44

They are 8, 10, and soon to be 13.

00:36:48

Wow.

00:36:49

Oh my God. Right in the zone.

00:36:51

So nice.

00:36:51

You know, it's fun.

00:36:52

It's fun.

00:36:53

I watched an interview with Bob Odenkirk, and Mike Birbiglia asked him, he's like, who are you jealous of? And he meant like professionally. And Bob goes, oh, anyone that still has little kids at home.

00:37:03

And I was like, that's so sweet.

00:37:04

Yeah, I'm with him. I got a 14-year-old still in the house, and I'd just like to keep her in a box. I stop it right there.

00:37:11

And does. And you do.

00:37:13

I do, I do. I punch little holes in the top of it.

00:37:18

Uh, yeah, it is true, it is true. It is the best part, is, is keeping them young. Yeah, it's so good.

00:37:24

Don't—

00:37:24

I got a little 6-year-old. My guy's about to turn 6. Yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:37:29

And I said, I'm gonna do for him— hold on.

00:37:31

Mike, we're doing a— we're doing a party at a place called—

00:37:35

don't you just say the name of the place? I just want to like—

00:37:38

I like it because it's got ninja in the name, but it doesn't matter.

00:37:40

Are you looking for a break? No, you're looking for a break on the—

00:37:43

what? I mind. By the way, they're crushing me on the price for this thing for a couple kids.

00:37:47

You want it on the weekend, right? You do it during the week, you get a real deal.

00:37:52

Fucking Brooklyn.

00:37:53

Jesus Christ.

00:37:55

Anyway, so Ike, so Ike, so you're the lifeworker. Work-life balance that John is so desperate to know about. It's fine, you figure it out. You're working. Everybody knows Dad's on the— Yes. And by the way, like, we talk about it all the time. We go away, but everybody has busy. My dad wasn't an actor, but he was busy a lot. He was off working, and he had— he was like, I got to provide for the family. So he's off doing his show.

00:38:17

He's driving down to the Molson, and he's checking the taps, and then he's coming home, you know, still fresh boys, flying off somewhere.

00:38:27

He was, he was on the road a lot, right, Sean? Yeah, you know that.

00:38:31

Yeah, yeah, yeah. What's a knickerbocker?

00:38:34

Oh, well, this is a, this is an old phrase from New York City.

00:38:38

It's like a metropolitan fellow, maybe, where I believe it is.

00:38:43

Yes, I could— let's go with that. I believe it is a— no, I don't think it's necessarily a dandy, but, um, but, uh, uh, um, Will, are you, are you, are you searching it? I'm gonna search it up.

00:38:53

No, I'm not.

00:38:54

Let's go to our next question. Hey Siri, what's a Knickerbocker?

00:39:00

Oh, it's a descendant of the original Dutch settlers.

00:39:03

Or knickers in the United States are a form of baggy knee britches.

00:39:06

No, it's a person descended from the original Dutch settlers of New York, or more broadly, a native or resident of New York City.

00:39:12

Oh, do you guys like trivia? Are you guys— are anywhere— are there any of you trivia heads?

00:39:16

No, I wouldn't.

00:39:16

I'm a little bit. I watch Jeopardy!

00:39:18

Because— so I was going to mention this, but Ike's got a trivia podcast that he's doing now that we're always going to plug after.

00:39:23

Oh, for real?

00:39:24

Yeah, funny you ask.

00:39:26

So Will was gonna do it, and he texted me. He's like, hey man, I, uh, I can't do it. And I thought it was gonna be like— I didn't sound like that, by the way, but that's how I read your text. And I thought it was gonna be like, you know, a work thing came up, or, uh, yeah, I got a kid thing. And he's like, I, I can't, uh, Bateman really wants to go golfing.

00:39:43

Oh, you—

00:39:48

how dare you!

00:39:49

I sold you out. I sold you out. You go, because Jason— well, it was here. I did tell you that.

00:39:53

Was that that thing a couple weeks ago?

00:39:55

It's the last time he played. Yeah, it was the last time he was playing before he leaving town. So Bateman says, I'll do it. And so Bateman texted me, well, why don't you just reschedule?

00:40:04

I don't sound like that on text.

00:40:07

Why don't you just reschedule when I can do it on a later date and join me on the golf course tomorrow?

00:40:14

I don't want to sound like Paul Lynde.

00:40:17

Oh, that's who it is. That's who you sound like. I've been trying to place it.

00:40:21

Um, now, but did he offer—

00:40:22

I had to be honest.

00:40:23

I wanted to be honest with you, and I truly appreciate that, because if he would have been like, uh, It's— I have a work thing, and then I went golfing and saw him there. I'd be crushed.

00:40:31

Did you offer him a rescheduling date? Well, he did.

00:40:34

I did. I did. And I'm here and I'm waiting. He's out of town and I'm waiting for him to get back, and I'm going to do it.

00:40:38

We're actually going to do it right after we finish this pod.

00:40:40

Yeah, we're going to do it.

00:40:41

Wait, you got some questions, Ike?

00:40:43

I do have some questions for you guys. I started a trivia podcast because I love trivia, right? I'm obsessed with trivia. I've, I've, I've gone on—

00:40:50

Have you been on Jeopardy?

00:40:51

I won Celebrity Jeopardy, Mr. Bateman.

00:40:53

Yeah.

00:40:54

Wait, what?

00:40:55

Oh wow. I didn't know that.

00:40:55

I won Celebrity Jeopardy. He's one who wants to be a millionaire Whoa, One Celebrity Wants to Be a Millionaire.

00:41:01

Like, what's the game in the bars?

00:41:03

Um, in the bars?

00:41:05

Oh, pub trivia.

00:41:06

Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.

00:41:07

I've done that before. That's very fun. That's very fun. But I want to do a podcast where I interview friends of mine who are like funny or cool and then ask them trivia questions about subjects that they kind of—

00:41:17

I'd love to read for it.

00:41:18

Uh, well, you're, uh, we are out to your people, I'm sure. Do you guys want a couple questions? I wrote, I wrote some questions.

00:41:24

Obviously, obviously.

00:41:25

Okay, let's go, let's go. You can just call out the answer if you know it.

00:41:28

Okay, there's no buzzer?

00:41:30

Nope, uh, just say your name for the buzzer. Okay, uh, okay, uh, when, uh, the Battle of the Hastings—

00:41:36

Jason, this was—

00:41:37

what do you got?

00:41:38

Sorry, 19.

00:41:40

The Battle of the Hastings, this, uh, Norman king was the conqueror.

00:41:46

William the Conqueror.

00:41:46

Okay, I blew that question. Ready? Here we go. This American car company—

00:41:50

by the way, 1066.

00:41:51

Yes, 1066. This American car company ceased production in 2004.

00:41:56

This American—

00:41:57

what part of this American car company ceased production in 2004 but was part of GM?

00:42:04

Yeah, I know what it is.

00:42:05

Uh, Jason. Oldsmobile.

00:42:07

Yes, Jason Bateman.

00:42:07

Oh wow, how do you know that?

00:42:10

Name another Marx Brother besides Groucho or Harpo.

00:42:14

Yeah, uh, Sean. Uh, Groucho, Harpo, and, uh—

00:42:21

you were in the fucking movie.

00:42:23

Richard.

00:42:24

No, that was the Three Stooges.

00:42:25

Oh no, wait.

00:42:27

It starts with a P, right? Does it start with a P?

00:42:30

Uh, there's a C— a C, a G, and a Z. Yeah, um, Zeppo!

00:42:35

Zeppo!

00:42:35

Ah, that's right.

00:42:36

Looking for Chico, Gummo, or Zeppo.

00:42:38

Yes.

00:42:40

Eastern region of Canada consists of 3 provinces and is known as what?

00:42:45

Well, uh, it is known as the Commonwealth. No, no, no, no, no, no, Maritimes.

00:42:52

Yes.

00:42:53

Uh, who was the 10th U.S. president?

00:42:56

Oh God, Jason.

00:42:58

Yes.

00:42:59

Lincoln.

00:43:00

McKinley?

00:43:00

No. John Tyler. This actress has won more Emmys than any other actor?

00:43:05

Jason.

00:43:08

Yes. Is it Julia Louis-Dreyfus?

00:43:11

It is Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

00:43:12

Damn it.

00:43:12

Isaac Newton, Charles Dickens, and Oliver Cromwell are buried in what London landmark?

00:43:17

Jason.

00:43:17

Um, it is the, the big, the big church, the big cathedral, the big, um, Westminster Boom!

00:43:24

Uh, two more. This man is the NHL's all-time leading scorer.

00:43:28

Sean?

00:43:28

I would—

00:43:29

Jason Wengreski.

00:43:31

No, it's Ovechkin.

00:43:33

Score? No, score of goals. Score— I, I was including points.

00:43:36

Oh, okay, okay.

00:43:38

I knew it was the best— most goals. Sorry.

00:43:40

Last one. Infant insects are called nymphs or small bugs.

00:43:45

Jason?

00:43:52

Infant insects are called small bugs or larva. I don't know.

00:43:57

Larvae is correct. Nice job, guys. You guys got the majority of those right.

00:44:01

God, that's so cool that 3 of us could get 20% of them right.

00:44:06

Welcome to Smartless.

00:44:08

Yeah. Oh shit.

00:44:11

Oh my God. Well, what's the name of that— what's the name of that podcast there?

00:44:14

That podcast, Jason, thank you for asking, is called Funny You Funnies.

00:44:18

That seems like a tune-in.

00:44:20

And you just had our friend— you just had our mutual friend Adam Pally on there who hosts a podcast for us, which I love, with him and Gabrus.

00:44:27

Yeah.

00:44:27

What's that one called? Cross Plug.

00:44:29

Cross Plug. Staying Alive.

00:44:31

Staying Alive. It's a Smartless Media podcast. Check it wherever you get your podcasts. With Gabrus and Adam Pally. Adam Pally is so fucking funny.

00:44:38

He is one of the funniest dudes.

00:44:40

He is a great guy. So fucking funny, that dude, isn't he?

00:44:44

He said I was asking him, what would you give— what would you do if the Knicks could win the championship? And I named a bunch of things, like, would you change your middle name to Stalin? He was like, yes, yes. I was like, would you, uh, every time you turn on the TV for the rest of your life, it's only Kill Tony? He's like, yes. The one thing he said he wouldn't do is give up chicken parm.

00:45:05

Yeah, I saw that.

00:45:06

I can't give up chicken.

00:45:09

I'm sorry.

00:45:11

Now, do you have a co-host on your, on your show?

00:45:13

No, it's all me, man. It's solo. Wow.

00:45:15

It's once a week?

00:45:16

It's once a week, and I write all the questions for my guest. It's 1 hour.

00:45:21

You do all your own questions?

00:45:22

I write the questions for the guests, and I really love doing that. It's like, it's a fun way to kind of like get into their head a little bit. And then my producer Annabelle writes the questions that the guest asks me, because I also want to do a podcast where I answer questions.

00:45:36

But that's still like a lot of work that you're doing, considering all the shit you're doing?

00:45:40

You're running—

00:45:41

yeah, you're writing Running Point, you're, you're, uh, EPing that show, you're doing, uh, The Studio, you're doing this podcast, you're running around doing all this. Like, how the fuck?

00:45:49

You got an Adderall addiction, Ike?

00:45:51

Yeah, I have a minor speed addiction that we're trying to kick right now. Uh, cut this.

00:45:56

Uh, guys, another trim point. Can I get a number?

00:46:00

With the podcast and the movies and the being a father and everything else, when do you slow down? What do you do to slow down yoga.

00:46:07

I, I, when Jason was saying I like to watch TV, that's like my favorite thing to do is like at the end of the day is to watch like—

00:46:14

and what's your fave? Is it reality TV?

00:46:17

Something dumb?

00:46:19

The only—

00:46:19

no, the reality TV, not too much. We, we just finished Beef season 2.

00:46:23

Sure.

00:46:23

I like watching good TV shows.

00:46:26

So you'll get it, you'll climb in. And, and the we is, is that the girlfriend or the, or the wife?

00:46:31

The, the— that's the wife. The girlfriend does not like TV. The girlfriend wants to go out tonight.

00:46:35

Yeah, she wants to take her out to She likes bottle service.

00:46:39

No, my wife and I— she actually works at the club and does the bottle service.

00:46:44

Of course, that makes a lot of sense.

00:46:45

I don't know if you guys had this with your wife where my wife does want to go to bed like earlier and earlier. She works, blah blah. And so there's some nights where it's like 8:52 and she's like, should we just go to bed? And it's like this— it's like a push and pull. We're like, no, we have to watch like 46 minutes of a TV show right now.

00:47:00

But what about— why can't— but you're, you're not watching the TV shows in bed.

00:47:04

We don't— we did not put a TV in our bedroom.

00:47:07

That's smart.

00:47:07

That's terrible for your sleep. Shut up. Are you guys both keeping the sex alive by not having a TV in there? This is bullshit.

00:47:15

But so you're watching— by the way, that Beef season 2, can I just shout out, obviously Chuck Arnett, but Carey Mulligan.

00:47:21

Yeah.

00:47:22

The great Carey Mulligan.

00:47:23

The great Carey Mulligan.

00:47:24

Carey Mulligan is the most underrated actor of our generation.

00:47:30

She's really good.

00:47:31

And Carey's great.

00:47:32

I fucking love—

00:47:34

I will say though, that always sounds like a bad— like, that always sounds like a backhanded compliment. I will say, to those who, who know what they're talking about, she is not underrated. They're talking—

00:47:43

no, I know. I just, I just mean, I just mean she should be lauded. There should just be permanent billboards of her not even promoting a movie, just because she's— I agree with you. I, I can't—

00:47:53

you should take— you should buy some, take them out.

00:47:55

I will. I don't know if Marcus, her husband, will love it. He might think that, you know what I mean? It's a little biased. Anyway.

00:48:03

Hey, yeah, we are at hour one.

00:48:05

I know we're at hour one.

00:48:06

Let's get to our first question.

00:48:08

I love fucking Mike. I just love hanging out with Mike. I was so excited. I said to Sean before, we were FaceTiming before, you know, the core part of Smartless, we were FaceTiming before, just Sean and me. And we were— and I was saying— he was saying, "Is your guest good?" I said, "Oh, our guest is so good. We just want to hang out and laugh and do—" Yeah.

00:48:26

That's— That's exactly right.

00:48:27

Do you have any questions, Will?

00:48:29

No! Fuck no, I do! You don't, do you? I had a bunch. Like, what's a note that you've gotten that says, an actor or a writer that really changed how you approach your work? You've collaborated with a lot of comedic voices. What do you think makes a collaboration?

00:48:41

Who fucking cares? Who cares? This is the show.

00:48:45

Did you J-O today?

00:48:49

Let's just say I'm in a hotel room by myself. Enough said.

00:48:56

First of all, when does Season 3 of The Studio come out?

00:48:58

Because I can't wait. That's going to come out next March, I believe.

00:49:01

Fuck off. March 2027? Wow. Takes them that long to cut it together? Time.

00:49:05

Fucking what's up with Rogan and fucking Evan? What are they doing, man? They're smoking doobies, man. I know, those guys are smoking the grass. I bought one of— I told— I bought one of Seth's, uh, um, his standing ashtrays. No, I bought two of them and I sent him a pic and I said, hey, I'm supporting the cause, you know.

00:49:22

As an investor, I say thank you. Oh, no shit. Yeah, a little bit. Fucking—

00:49:27

you guys want to cut me a deal? I fucking paid retail on the fucking website, dude.

00:49:31

I only invest in my friends' companies. We have no money in the market, no mutual funds, no Roth IRA. I just invest in my friends' small—

00:49:38

that is so— that's our whole—

00:49:40

what's your email? I'm going to send you a prospectus on something.

00:49:43

Yeah, it's, uh, it's an old email. It's dumbassike@aol. Yeah, I got it for myriad reasons.

00:49:50

Um, you're 4 minutes over, Will. I know, I know.

00:49:53

I just want to say, Ike, I love, I love having you. You— I love I love that the rest of the world appreciates what a fucking great, funny dude you are, increasingly. And I've loved watching the success you've had with the studio. I'm just fucking always rooting for you as you reach these crazy heights. And everybody with the studio came out—

00:50:13

You said it earlier. I light up every time I see you. 100%.

00:50:17

You always have a great vibe. And then now you've taken it to the next level. And everybody's like— people are like, have you seen Ike Barinholtz on the fucking studio? He's so fucking funny. You're so fucking good.

00:50:27

And aside from all that, You get hired over and over because you're normal and easy and kind and a good person. You are talented. You are.

00:50:35

Aside from all the talent, it is true. If you're listening out there, to our listener, and you've got a script, Ike— if you got a script, Ike is the guy to send it to. Give me the email one more time.

00:50:47

He'll put his name on it. It's like an AOL. I might not be the best actor or the funniest actor, but I'm on time and I'm respectful. Yeah. And that is all that matters. You are truly—

00:50:57

for our listener, I will say truly, you're one of the fucking great good dudes out there. And, and that— and I, and I really mean that.

00:51:03

This is a bucket list thing for me, guys.

00:51:07

I'm dying. What a guy!

00:51:09

This guy, take another bow!

00:51:13

Ike Madden holds the one and only.

00:51:17

Thank you, Ike, for joining us, my friend.

00:51:19

Give our love to everybody over there on your cast that you guys are doing The Baptist with. Tell them we say hi, we love you guys, and we love You amazing.

00:51:28

Love you. Hurry home. Thanks. Bye everybody.

00:51:30

Bye.

00:51:33

I love that dude. I love that dude.

00:51:35

That's one of those fellas that I, I have not yet worked with, and I'm, I'm, I'm not happy about it, uh, you know. And you know who else? Like, you know, like Seth, Evan, Judd Apatow. Like, I've never been, never been included in that group ever. No one's ever, you know, said, hey, won't you come on over learn.

00:51:53

Okay, play a little bit. Now stop, stop for a second. Take a beat. Let's look at— let's look at ourselves, Jason. Let's look at ourselves for a second. What's my part in it? What is your role? What is my part? Hang on, let me get a mirror.

00:52:06

Let me get a mirror.

Don't get one of those true mirrors. Don't get one of those true mirrors.

00:52:10

True mirror?

00:52:11

Have you ever seen those where you— it's not even just a reflection, like it kind of sees like what the world sees of you? No, it's just inverted.

00:52:17

It's inverted.

00:52:18

It's scary AF. Wait, really?

00:52:21

It's different that you just— your face is flipped the other way around?

00:52:24

You look— yes, it's— have you never done it?

00:52:26

It's— I think the iPhone, if you reverse the camera, is that—

00:52:30

that's the way people see you. I don't know. No, you just see the room you're in.

00:52:34

I don't know. Yeah, but I mean, that's the perspective of, of people looking at you.

00:52:38

Oh, you're in luck. MIT just called. They have an opening.

00:52:42

Like, what I'm looking at right now on this Zoom, I'm I'm assuming that is the perspective that you would have if you were sitting across from me, right? Because the camera's in front of me. Yeah, yeah, I guess so. Yeah, I'm not sure. Can we get Tyson— Neil deGrasse Tyson on the blower, please?

00:52:58

This is so depressing.

00:53:01

Wait, Sean's got— here he comes. I'm just gonna see his eyes.

00:53:04

Here it is. Scotty just DM'd him.

00:53:07

Just DM'd him a little bye.

00:53:09

No, no, let me see. Yeah, yeah.

00:53:11

Oh, okay, okay. I'm looking up something else. Has nothing to do with Scrolling, scrolling.

00:53:15

Do you remember the—

00:53:17

oh, hey, do you guys— hey, this is a weird thing I was just thinking about.

00:53:24

Do you remember that Beatles song or Paul McCartney song where he's singing about a bird or something?

00:53:30

Oh, oh, Blackbird.

00:53:33

Yeah, I was gonna talk about it out of left fucking field.

00:53:36

Yeah, that's Wrigley Field. That's Wrigley Field. And when— and when this— and when that— when the— when the ball goes out of Wrigley Field Sure. You say what to it? You say bye-bye, ball. Bye-bye, Blackbird.

00:53:50

Hey guys, where did you go? Blackbird, bye-bye.
