Host Ben Meiselas reviews a set of recent polls showing Democratic candidates ahead in several Texas races, including James Talarico in the Senate contest and Gina Hinojosa in the governor's race. He presents these results alongside clips of Texas voters, former officials and a campaign supporter who say they are switching parties or backing Democrats, and he argues these shifts reflect frustration with the Republican establishment.
The episode also covers Talarico's campaign appearances, his argument that competitive elections produce better public policy, and Meiselas's sharp criticism of Ken Paxton and Donald Trump, which listeners may want to weigh against the polling data themselves.

I've just recorded the first episode of our new season talking about the state of play for the IMO's Net Zero Framework in the wake of the just concluded latest MEPC meeting. The big question I hear again and again is, what happens next and how quickly? In this episode, I unpack what's moving, what's stalling, and what that means for future decisions and timelines. Donald Trump's nightmare in Texas just got way worse. The latest YouGov poll that just dropped has James Talarico, the Democratic candidate for Senate, up 51% to Ken Paxton, the Trump MAGA Republican stooge's 43%. Let me just repeat that. Talarico at 51%, Paxton at 43%. Talarico taking a commanding lead in this YouGov poll. But let's take a look at the governor's race. where the Trump MAGA stooge Governor Greg Abbott is currently trailing to the Democratic candidate Gina Hinojosa. We've had her on the Midas Touch Network before. She's up 49% to Governor Abbott's 46%. And Hinojosa has run an incredible campaign just pointing out how Abbott has turned Texas into the data center haven, giving the data center owners all of these tax breaks and also giving Elon Musk massive tax breaks to the tunes of billions of dollars selling out Texas to Musk and the billionaires class. But folks, it's not just the Senate race or the governor's race. You take a look at some of the other statewide office races as well. You look at the lieutenant governor's race over there. Democratic candidate Goodwin is beating the MAGA Republican Lieutenant Governor Patrick 48% to 45%.
We look at the attorney general race right there, the Democratic candidate Johnson beating the MAGA Republican candidate Middleton 47% 47% to 45%. You look at the railroad commissioner, Democratic candidate Rosenthal beating the MAGA Republican extremist French, 47% to 43%. And by the way, you can go through all of these congressional races, especially where these MAGA Republicans did their gerrymander, which now looks like it's going to be a dummy-mander where Republicans not just, uh, created these districts where Democrats are likely going to win, they diluted all these other districts as well and made other Republican districts more competitive for Democrats where Democrats are leading. And one of the things you're seeing in Texas is a lot, a lot of Republican voters who say, I'm not like MAGA. I'm not with this Trump-Epstein class stuff. I'm not with this never-ending war, Epstein cover-up, pedo protector stuff. Like, I'm a— they go, I'm like a Reagan Republican, or I'm like a, you know, old-school Republican. Now say what you want about, you know, we could have Lots of conversations about them, just telling you how they represent themselves. So I'll give you an example over here. Here's a Texas Republican voter saying, I'm with Talarico, man.
Here, play this clip.
We're going to vote for James Talarico.
Oh, interesting.
We are voting blue because the current Republicans on the slate in Texas are not desirable. I'm not going to vote Republican in this election.
Wow. Is, is that the first time for you?
Uh, I don't know about the first time, probably all ballot, but, uh, certainly the first time that it's not a shoo-in for the GOP in the red.
Here is another Texas Republican voter who describes himself as old-school Reagan Republican, not into covering up child sex trafficking rings like Paxton and Trump and all these MAGAs want to do. Not about, uh, selling out the United States to Russia. Not about, you know, uh, just giving all the money to the oligarchs. oligarchs and shutting down public schools and putting data centers in people's backyards, you know, um, running up the debt like these MAGA Republicans are over $40 trillion. Take a look at this Republican voter, what he has to say. Let's play it.
So why are you here?
Well, because I'm a Republican. I'm not a MAGA Republican. I'm an old school Reagan Republican, and I believe personal integrity means things. And so I support people that have good personal integrity, and I like James Talarico, and, uh, he is the kind of guy we need in office.
And not Ken Paxton.
Definitely not Ken Paxton. Like I said, I think we need people with personal integrity. My, my father taught me personal integrity is what you do when you think nobody's watching. And we know what Mr. Talarico's opponent will do when nobody's watching. So I think we need people that are, that are willing to represent their constituents and not just their donors.
Or how about this lifelong Republican voter? These lifelong Republican voters in deep red parts of Texas, they're just fed up with the corruptions and lies, and they're voting Democrat. Democrats down ballot. They're voting Democrats in Congress. Listen to what this guy's got to say.
You're telling me about the conversations that you're having in your hometown. Tell me about that.
Yes. You know, my hometown is Rockport, Texas, and it's a really great town to go have fun and have vacation. But when I wear my Talarico shirt there, I get people that stop me at the stores and tell me they've been Republicans all their life. And they're voting Talarico, they're voting Gina Lujan, they're voting Bobby Pulido because they're tired of the corruption, the lies that are going on right now.
Does that surprise you?
That surprised me, especially when they tell me I was pretty brave wearing that t-shirt in that town. But it's— to me, it's the folks see it and feel it, of the corruption and the dishonesty that's going on right now in Texas politics. And they want to change. They want somebody who's honest and dedicated to the state, to our people here in Texas.
Folks, how about Ken Paxton's own lawyer endorsed James Talarico? Yeah, Ken Paxton's lawyer says, I'm definitely with Talarico here. Play this clip.
I think what people are hungry for is a campaign that's going to bring us together.
And that is exactly why I am supporting you. As you know, I defended Ken Paxton for years in the impeachment trial and in state criminal cases. But in my view, respectfully, respectfully, I think Ken has lost sight of his core mission, which is to represent the people of Texas. And unlike Ken, I believe to my core, James, that you, you believe in unity over division and that you know how to assemble not only Democrats but independents and Republicans. And we need that right now. We need it more than in my lifetime, and I'm old as dirt. Yeah. We, we need unity. We don't need any more division. And that's why I'm supporting.
And then when Talarico was just in Lubbock in Texas in front of 4,000 people, more people showed up to see Talarico there than saw Trump. Talarico's like, damn, a lot of Talaricos in the room here. Play this clip.
It is so good to be back in Lubbock. Listen, listen, I, I know that we're not the only show in town tonight, and I appreciate All 4,000 of you that showed up here this evening. That's, that's a lot of Talafricos in one room. So—
Now contrast that with Ken Paxton's speech in front of like 40 people, where Ken Paxton was called out by one of the people there for being a pedo protector. And one of the people in the crowd said, It was a 7-year-old boy. Adam Hoffman is free because of you. You protect pedophiles. And indeed, Trump and Paxton, they do protect the pedos with the— whether it's the cover-up of the Epstein files, whether it's releasing people like Adam Hoffman, actual pedos. This is what MAGA Republicans stand for— pedo protection at this point. That's just— that's who they are. So if you're into that, which is sick, And twisted, you're a MAGA, I guess. I mean, that's what you're into. That's what Trump and the Epstein class are into. So here's what they said about Paxton. Play this clip.
Shut up. USA! USA! USA! USA!
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! A lot of people use nicotine as a pre-workout thinking that will actually make their pump and their workouts better. The reality is it's the complete opposite. Nicotine is actually detrimental to your workouts because it narrows your blood vessels and restricts oxygen delivery to muscles, which directly contract the pump that you want to get out of your workout. That's why I started using Ultra Pouches, and they've been a complete game changer for my workouts and energy levels. I've been using them for a month now, and Ultra Pouches are like the ideal thing for athletes, runners, and health-conscious people because they are 100% Nicotine-free. These give you an instant focus and energy boost without the vasoconstriction, crash, and addiction that come with nicotine. They use clinically proven nootropics and adaptogens to deliver immediate focus and smooth energy that lasts 1 to 2 hours. Just pop one pouch in 5 minutes before your run, workout, or workday, and you'll feel it sharpen your mind and lift your energy by the time that you start. Ultra pouches have a shorter half-life than caffeine, so they won't disrupt your sleep. I keep these in my gym bag and for that extra push needed before my workout, I pop one in and honestly see the difference every single time.
Keeping them in my office or right beside my computer when I start my day has been a real game changer because it helps me focus and absolutely lock in. 90% of users saw significant improvements in their overall focus levels while using Ultra pouches. Ultra is the ultimate guilt-free pouch, delivering instant focus and mental clarity without nicotine or caffeine. New customers can use code MIDAS to get 15% off at takeultra.com. Now, in contrast, you had Gina Hinojosa running ads like this. I think it's just powerful ads. I mean, her campaign should be studied one day because she is laser-focused on pointing out Greg Abbott equals more data centers. Greg Abbott equals oligarchs screwing up your lives. Life. Greg Abbott equals Epstein class. Greg Abbott equals flock cameras in all of your backyards preying on your privacy. Greg Abbott equals destruction of public schools. Greg Abbott equals ripping away your healthcare. Greg Abbott equals making your life horrible. That's just the truth. Those are undisputed facts.
We would call that back in the day when I would practice law on a summary judgment motion, undisputed facts. Here's the ad that Gina Hinojosa is running about flock cameras. And she says, destruction of flock cameras, not authorized, just vote. Here, play this clip.
In Greg Abbott's Texas, we're all sitting ducks. 10,000 cameras tracking your every move. This ain't some quackpot conspiracy. It's foul play by big government. And Abbott wants more. Texas, let's get our freedoms back.
Now you have longtime Republican mayor, former Texas Republican senator. He was the Amarillo mayor. His name is Kelton Seliger, um, staple of the Republican Party there. He goes, look, I'm a Republican and I'm voting for Gina Hinojosa. I'm voting for Talarico. I'm voting for these people because I support Republicans. That's how this is showing my support of Republicans. You know, this, this, uh, Ken Paxton thing, these people are not real. Um, these people are not real Republicans. These people are, these people are twisted sicko MAGAs. Here, play this clip.
I am a Republican and I will continue to be a Republican, but I'm looking for James Tallarico to stimulate the sort of change and be the kind of example that our party provided with people like Ronald Reagan. I'm here today because I have 4 grandchildren. Yes. And I want them to see the example that people who run for office ought to display the very highest ideals and morals. Amen. I was a senior member of the Texas Senate when I got a message one day and somebody said a brand new House member by the name of James Talarico would like to come and see you. I said everybody would come and see me. At that point, I was getting a little crossways with my party. I was kind of happy if anybody wanted to come and see me. And he came and he brought a piece of legislation. I forget what it was. He may remember, but it was a normal piece of legislation. Did nothing odd, did nothing funny. If I missed my guess, it was something that did something to help the people who sent James to the legislature that was going to do something with our public schools, which is still the single largest moral and constitutional obligation that we have.
And so when you watch things on TV, I sit around and watch this stuff on TV. I think it's so funny because let's put it out here right now. James is not some sort of wild-eyed, Socialist. He's just not. Did James support 40 measures to raise property tax? No, he didn't. But that's the sort of thing that gets people excited. What he does believe in, though, is that the people who are elected to go to Washington are going to represent us, every one of us. They're not represent— they're not going there to represent the wishes and desires of the President of the United States, regardless of what shade orange he is. He is not going to Washington to represent the billionaires who put so much money into races. Now they don't just contribute to races, they buy those offices and they own them. And, uh, so that's why I'm here today. And that's why I voted yesterday for James Talarico.
Now let me just again show you this incredible campaign Gina Hinojosa is running. She says, when I'm the first governor from the Rio Grande Valley. I will secure the American dream by saving Texas schools and putting money in your pocket. Play this clip.
It is good to be home. When I am governor, the first governor from the Rio Grande Valley, my agenda will be to secure the American Remember the American dream. The American dream was that hard work paid, that if you worked hard, you could have a good life. If you had a full-time job, you could afford to own your own home, put healthy food on the table, send your kids to a good school in the neighborhood down the street. That's the dream. That is the promise of this country. And absolutely, The promise of Texas, but we have to demand it. And if you do everything you can in the Rio Grande Valley where we're already seeing historic voter turnout, then I will be the next governor of Texas.
What about Coach Buck? Yeah, Coach Buck voted for Greg Abbott 3 times, and Coach Buck says no more. I'm with Hinojosa now. Here, play this clip.
As a football coach, we won a lot of championships, so I'm not used to losing. So we better get out and vote. And when I say we, it cannot be just you. Everybody in this room needs to get 10 people to vote with you. That's how we win. Now, I got to tell you a story. Since I came out with the endorsement of Gina, I've had some nasty things said about me on Facebook, but as a football coach, I've had a lot of nasty stuff said about me. You know, if I called a run play, the receiver's parents were pissed off at me. If I called a pass play, the running back's parents were pissed off at me. So that really doesn't bother me. But I've had a lot of people call me and thank me for trying to save public schools in Texas.
Finally, let me share with you this powerful closing message by James Talarico. What do you think? Here, play it. Thank you.
Thank you.
Well, I'm not interested in turning Texas blue. You want to flip the seat, don't you? I want to— I want to win this seat so that I can fight for all 31 million Texans, whether they're Democrats, independents, or Republicans. My party talks about turning Texas blue a lot. Republicans talk about keeping Texas red. I've said before, I think the best color for Texas is purple. I think she would look great in purple. Because when you have a purple state, when you have competitive elections, it forces every politician in both parties at all levels to stay on their toes. And we've seen this before. When we saw Democrats flip statehouse districts in 2018, I was one of the 12 that flipped. Suddenly in 2019, you saw the Republican leadership focusing on real issues. We were able to come together as Democrats and Republicans to pass historic school finance reform, historic property tax relief. We weren't, we weren't chasing crazy culture wars. We weren't grandstanding on issues. We were actually solving problems. And so I've seen this work. When you have competitive election results, you get better public policy on the back end. And my hope in this race is that we can finally end 30 years of one-party rule and get some competitive elections back in Texas so that all politicians are staying on their toes and trying to represent all 31 million Texans.
There you have it, everybody. Up, you know, Democrats surging ahead in Texas. We'll see. Polls don't vote, people vote. So now's the time though to Finally hold these, this Trump MAGA Epstein class, these bunch of demons, these sickos who hate America, who hate you, who want to destroy your lives. It's time to hold them accountable. Let me know what you think. Hit subscribe. Thanks for making WTF America, the book I wrote with my brothers, number 2 on the New York Times bestseller list. That's thanks to you. We really appreciate you making it number 2 on the New York Times bestsellers. Let me know your review. Let me know what you think about it. Appreciate you so much. Have a good one.
