With David Droger, The Hockey News, Ethan and Rose in the other studio. I'm Roy Belmy. This is The Hockey Show. You can check us out on YouTube at The Hockey Show DLS, on TikTok at The Hockey Show 7, and on X Instagram and threads at Hockey DLS. We're going to talk about Stadium Series in the Timmy Panarin Trade with Greg Bershinsky of ESPN. He's the senior NHL writer over there. But first, we're going to talk about the big news that came out of college hockey.

00:00:42

Mckenna.

00:00:44

Thank you. You got it. You got it.

00:00:46

You got it, Geachar Rosie. I'm not a panther, Gavin McKenna. Let's be very clear.

00:00:49

We'll get to that as well. Gavin McKenna has been charged with felony assault, as well as several other charges after getting into a fight with a guy that he and a group of people that McKenna was a part of, got into a verbal spat. Apparently, McKenna punched the guy in the face twice, broke his jaw, knocked out a tooth as well. Some blood splattered all over the sidewalk. It was a mess. It was said on the police report, right side of his face, twice. So that jaw is broken. First-degree felony, aggregated assault in Pennsylvania is a maximum of 20 years and/or $25,000 in a fine. This is a career-altering situation for a guy that might go number one in the draft this year. He's also in the first year at Penn State after playing three years in juniors. So this could go in any direction, David. What do you think?

00:01:48

You said he got hit in the right side of his face.

00:01:50

The right side of his face, twice.

00:01:51

Gavin Mittena is a lefty, so I guess that makes sense.

00:01:53

Yeah, that tracks, right? Yeah.

00:01:56

I've been thinking about it since this came out. Have we ever seen a top draft prospect. Draft prospect? I can't even talk. A prospect? Have we ever seen a top draft prospect- Aggravated? Will get arrested or have any chart or anything like this in the months leading up to the draft? I feel like this is very unprecedented.

00:02:13

There was that Hockey Canada 5 thing.

00:02:16

Yeah, but they had already been drafted.

00:02:17

No, they had already been drafted. They had already had- Cotter Hart was already in the lead.

00:02:20

I don't know. This is like going back to draft day when Aaron Foster's character got in a fight when he was the FSU running back. Do we take him in the first round? I don't know. That was the only comparable that I could think of, and that's fiction.

00:02:32

Dolphins had a draft picked at-I was going to say, Let her me cancel. Yeah, let her me cancel.

00:02:36

But he didn't get arrested. He took a pick in a face bond mask thing.

00:02:39

That was the most badass thing of all time. That's awesome. Yeah, it was badass.

00:02:42

I wanted to hang out with him after seeing that. I wanted to draft him twice.

00:02:45

Of course, you did. There are some details that have been reported that we should add in, which is that apparently the person, the victim in this case, was verbally assaulting or verbally abusing Gavin Gavin Kevin McKenna's mom. Oh, no. All these are things that you should not- No, you shouldn't do that.

00:03:04

Allegedly. This is unconfirmed. Allegedly. This was a photograph of a text message that got to eat it out.

00:03:11

There was also some more reporting from other people on scene, not just the text message. But basically, the point being that there's two sides to every story.

00:03:20

Even still, though, I'm sorry. If you're a potential number one draft pick, you're going to get heckled. You're going to get razz. People are going to chirp you out public. Yeah, but don't go after my mom, dude.

00:03:28

I don't care. Don't go after my mom. Don't I'm not going to call my future. Don't call my mom names. Don't call my mom a very terrible thing to call your mom.

00:03:34

Be a bigger man, dude. It's some schmuck stranger. Who gives a shit? It's just some randos that you're never going to see again. He's jeopardizing his whole future.

00:03:41

He's 17 years old. I don't care. And somebody's verbally assaulting your mother.

00:03:47

He was with his whole team. He was with a group of people. If he's a hothead and his people know that, get him away from this, dude. Don't let this happen. There's a lot of safeguards, I feel like, that were failed, that let this happen, that got him charged.

00:03:59

I It's fair, but I think ultimately, we're probably not going to look at a situation where Gavin McKenna gets sentenced to 20 years in prison.

00:04:07

Two years from now, when he's scoring 30 goals a game in the NHL, nobody's going to give a shit.

00:04:11

It's a bar fight where he got a little-It's not even a bar fight.

00:04:14

It's built on the street.

00:04:16

Yeah, it was outside a bar when things got a little testy. We'll probably look back on this, and I don't want to say we'll laugh, but it'll just be a better- Maybe it's the Tracy Morgan- people have done worst things in the NHL.

00:04:30

Yeah, but they've already been drafted is the point. His future has not been set yet.

00:04:33

Is this guy going to go to prison or no? Because he cannot play from prison.

00:04:37

That's going to be tough. California Penal League.

00:04:41

They're going to try to protect that man. They're going to try to protect him, but he has to go to prison.

00:04:45

Well, we don't know. That's the thing. All that's happened is he's been charged. I assume he's been arrained at this point, but it has to play out in the court system. How old is the kid? Eighteen.

00:04:56

Oh, kid. Yeah, he'll be tried as an adult.

00:04:59

Young people make It's just stupid mistakes. No doubt. This isn't all on Gavin McKenna, but there's a lot of responsibility that is on him and that's on his people. This cannot happen. I don't care. Unless the guy physically did something and you have to use your brute strength to separate something. If it's just words, no, man, that's not a line of demarcation to jeopardize your whole future.

00:05:20

Don't talk about my mom. That's it. Don't talk about my mom.

00:05:24

You have to remember that if he was out and under the influence of something, you lose control.

00:05:30

That's why you have a support group, which is-Exactly.

00:05:34

That's why you don't get in a situation like that unless you're surrounded by your people. That's why guys don't go out drinking alone when they're in the NHL.

00:05:39

That's my kid's fault.

00:05:40

Let's say that Ethan is correct here. It's a lot of people's fault. His mom was actually there. This is coming from a guy.

00:05:47

It was the weekend of the game in people's stadium.

00:05:49

It was the night of the outdoor game.

00:05:50

I think it was right after the outdoor game. I'm sure his mom was probably in town for the biggest game of the season.

00:05:54

This is coming from a guy who does your mama jokes on Twitter. Don't do that. Don't do that. Not while she's there. Don't insult another person's mom like that. That's just unbecoming of whoever that person was. I'm not saying that you deserve to get punched in the face, but I understand.

00:06:10

You deserve to get punched in the face, but you don't actually punch the guy in the face. There's other ways around this.

00:06:17

Well, his future is apparently on the line, and we'll see what the prosecutors do against Gamma McKenna as we get closer and closer to the draft. On Wednesday, the flames beat the Allers, and a loss that was so bad for the Allers that you have to think about it like this. Jonathan Hubido, specifically, played in this game, delayed hip surgery and scored a goal. Then after the game, opted out of the season for said hip surgery.

00:06:47

I think he scored the first goal of that game, too, if I'm not mistaken.

00:06:49

Yes, he scored the very first goal of that game. Mckinsey Waker had to assist Brian Lomberg, also scored in that game. That was the game winner in the third, so former Panthers got their legs against the Allers.

00:07:02

Never fails.

00:07:03

Yeah. So despite being second in the Pacific division, the Allers have lost seven of their last twelve, and it's getting to the point where Leon Dreisaddle is Pointing Fingers. He's pointing fingers at his goal tender. He's not blaming the goalies. He's also blaming the coaches. So it's looking bad right now in Edmonton. And they are heading into an Olympic break, into the Olympic break. So they're going to have to stew on this one.

00:07:32

This is a team that's four points out of first place in their division. Have you seen in the last few years a team that's had more ebbs and flows and high highs and low lows than the Edmonton Oilers? Like, holy cow. Meanwhile, Stuart Skinner is out there playing his brains out in Pittsburgh. Edmondson could use a goalie like Stuart Skinner right now, and I think that's hilarious.

00:07:50

It looks like he's working out for Pittsburgh right now, man.

00:07:53

We said at the time, basically, that they traded Stuart Skinner for Stuart Skinner, right? That's basically what they did.

00:07:59

No, we I didn't know what Stuart Skinner was.

00:08:01

The pens got the better version of Stuart Skinner, the guy that the oilers had been waiting for. It seems like that change of scenery is really benefiting him. But also, they just needed to make a better upgrade. This was never the move that they should have made. It always should have been either jar Jari and Skinner, not Jari and Pickard or Jari and now Ingram. Jari was never the answer. I don't know what they were thinking. The fact that this has blown up in their face so much, it's pretty funny to me, to be honest with you.

00:08:28

Maybe the goalies aren't the problem. Maybe it's not the goal tenders that's the problem in Edmonton.

00:08:33

We can talk about that with another team that went to the Stanley Cup final last year as well about the goalies not necessarily being the problem because the defensive structure in Edmonton is looking about the same as the defensive structure in Florida right now.

00:08:44

Florida is missing half their team.

00:08:46

We'll get to that later. But yeah, there's a lot of factors that go into it. I'm cutting this video right now, but as dry Seidl is saying, at some point, the goalie has got to step up and make a save. I think a lot of Panther fans are feeling that way, and I'm sure a lot of Edmonton fans have been feeling that way for about four or five years now.

00:09:06

Yeah, you just don't say it out loud. You don't call your guy out like that. Yes, I'm not saying that he's wrong and that the goalies need to make saves. The goalie has not been as good as it needs to be in Edmonton, but don't call your teammates out like that. That never ends well.

00:09:20

I can't believe I'm saying this, but is Chris Naublex... Is he on the high seat right now?

00:09:26

Probably not the way they run things in Edmondson.

00:09:28

I don't know, He's not the goalie coach, is he? No, he's not.

00:09:32

No, I don't know, man. Changing the coach, I feel like that's just like rinse repeat at this point. How is that going to fix things? Chris Naublex does such a good job.

00:09:42

I'm saying, though, Toronto, they fired their power play coach, and the power play is getting a little bit better.

00:09:50

Well, they're still on the game. They're still for playoffs. Yeah.

00:09:56

Like I said, they're in second place in the Pacific division, and There's a very good chance that they might play the Kings again in the first round.

00:10:02

Firing Knoblok would just be another scapegoat for the bigger problem here, which is clearly they haven't had a good enough goal taker.

00:10:09

Unless, I will say this, there is one really good hockey coach that's out there unemployed right now. If Edmondson brought in Peter De Boer- I was about to say.

00:10:20

You have a goalie problem and you want to bring in Peter De Boer? That's the guy you want to bring in? That guy hates goalies more than anybody in the world.

00:10:27

Oettinger is not exactly a big fan of him right now.

00:10:29

Jake Oettinger situation notwithstanding. I think Edmondson hiring Peter De Boer, that would make the league explode. Can you imagine? Yeah.

00:10:37

All right, let's go into the Panthers then. They are heading into the Olympic break with 10 players going to Philly, and still a handful of players on the roster injured. That includes Tobias Bjoan. A handful? I'm not going to give you a rough estimate, but yes. That's including Tobias Bjoanfut, who was placed on injured reserve yesterday. You can add that to to everything. And now Daneel Tarasoff last night. So, yeah, it's not looking good. They lost five in the last six in our dead last in the Atlantic division. Not looking good.

00:11:10

They have exactly two handfuls of players injured right now after last night's game where you They have a partial. Tarasov into the mix. They have 10 players that are currently injured, including their goalie, their top scorer, their best player, three of their defensemen from last year's Cup run, including their number one right-handed defenseman and their number two a right-handed defenseman who I personally think was their best defenseman before he got hurt this season in Seth Jones.

00:11:34

As usual, by the way, last night's game, Panthers Lightning, complete mess. I put all the blame on Kjurk Rank and T. J. Luxmore. That was a complete disaster. Those two don't know how to officiate those two teams. They should never officiate that matchup ever again. They are the worst officials in the league. I've said it. Put it on record. Make that a clip. Put your mic on.

00:11:55

Actually, I was talking to E and I was like, Do you know what reminded me this game off? It This is the game three where the oilers, they lost all their hopes and they started fighting for nothing for no reason. Now we are the Oilers this time.

00:12:07

I don't think we're the oilers.

00:12:08

I know, but this reminds me of this. Everybody just were fighting and fighting and fighting with no clue. Then you had five players in the penalty box. They didn't even fit.

00:12:20

Look, you have two guys called up from the AHL to play defense last night on your third pair in Donovan Sabrango, who's been up and down this year. Then help Let me out with this name, boys, because I'm blanking on it.

00:12:32

Mikolaus Havorka.

00:12:34

Mikolaus Havorka, who played his first NHL game last night.

00:12:37

Not to be confused with the Kavorka situation with Cosmo Kramer and Seythal.

00:12:41

All right, stick with me here, all right? Because the comparable here is the 2022-2023 season. At the 57 games, they are on pace with that season. In fact, they're a point ahead. They're a point ahead in that season.

00:12:54

Which season? '23?

00:12:55

2022-2023. That is the one where they made the and reached the Stanley Cup final. They finished the season that year, 15, 8, and 2. That is 32 points. That included finishing 6,1,1 with Alex Lyon as the starter. That was a six-game winning streak. But still, in game 81, the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins for the Panthers to make the playoffs. Now, this is a far more daunting season than that one.

00:13:24

Can I tell you the difference? Yeah. Okay, 57 games this year. They have 61 points. They're eight points back to the wild card spot. Fifty-seven games, they had 60 points in 2023. They were two points out of the wild card spot.

00:13:37

See, that's why this is a better conference this year than it was that year. And this year, we got some news, by the way, that we didn't expect happening. This is according to Frank Serra.

00:13:47

Speaking of trying to make the playoffs.

00:13:48

Frank Serrabelli. There's one person you could trust. You could trust him on this. The Panthers apparently have a top 10 protective pick if they go into the draft lottery. So, Bill Zito has a decision to make. Do you tank? I shouldn't even say tank. Do you forfeit this season and become sellers, or do you continue to try for the playoffs?

00:14:10

I think you continue to try for the playoffs. I think this Panthers team is built for that. Whether that's going to happen, whether the injuries will allow, I don't know. But everything that we've known about this team and how it's been made up under Bill Zito and Paul Maurice is that they go. They're going to give maximum effort no matter what the situation is.

00:14:30

Especially once everybody comes back.

00:14:31

Well, that's the other thing. They're going to have full belief once everybody's healthy that, no, eight points, whatever. We can do that in two weeks. That's fine.

00:14:38

That's a big if, though, because remember, they have 10 players going to the Olympics. One of those players is hurt right now, so we might not even... There's no guarantee. Is he on the plane to Milan, Brad Marshan? Do we know he's going to Milan? Because he's missed what, five? The last five games or so, he played that bossing game, but he only played 11 minutes. Are we looking at a minute's restriction Last night. I don't know what we're looking at. That's not for me to figure out. That's for John Cooper to figure out.

00:15:04

Five days until the men's hockey tournament starts, too. That's the 11th.

00:15:07

They're flying out today. That is something that we actually should think about because he's coming back to the team. That might affect him.

00:15:13

And there's no guarantee that any of these guys will come back healthy from the Olympics. We saw what happened at the Four Nations this year. That's not for me to worry about. No, I would never want to stop these guys from going to the Olympics. I'm not going to be one of these fans that's going to be mad about the fact that we have 10 guys going to the Olympics. I think it's a great thing. The really frustrating thing about this year is, like you mentioned, Dave, they were two points out of a playoff spot in 23 with the same amount of one less point. They would be two points out of a playoff spot if they were just in the Western Conference right now, if they were just in the Pacific division. But because of how the East has been playing this year, and this is what I talked about last week, all of these teams in front of them are on fire. They just cannot lose right now. And Boston continues to stay hot, and Buffalo continues to stay hot. The crucial games before the for the Panthers were that Buffalo loss, where they blew a two-point lead, a two-goal lead in the first period, and then they lost in the third period on just a complete defensive collapse, and a two-goal lead late against Boston that ends up with Boston getting a point.

00:16:14

If you're five points back instead of... Sorry, you would be... No, you would be six points back instead of eight points back. Like six points back, you have a pulse. Eight points back with no games in hand is an incredibly tall task. Hate math.

00:16:29

But also Math on the fly is hard.

00:16:30

All you need to do is win four in a row and have the team in front of you lose four in a row. So it's like, you never know.

00:16:36

Columbus has won nine of 10, and that's gotten them four points out. That's the Eastern Conference right now.

00:16:42

Yeah, and that's because of Rick bonus. That's all because of Rick bonus.

00:16:45

Coach Bump.

00:16:46

It's time for Park Lock. It's brought to you by Drap King. Drap King's the Crown is yours. David, have you won money this season?

00:16:52

I don't remember. I don't like that you start this off as such a negative place. I feel like that's not good juju.

00:16:58

Yeah, well, I'm Sorry. Knock on wood then.

00:17:02

Yeah, all right. But we got Olympic hockey for Puckluck this week, okay? So maybe it'll be a little bit. But okay. So tomorrow, Saturday, women's hockey tournament is going on. We got a bunch of games. First, we're going to take Sweden on the Puck Line minus two and a half against the host country, Italy. I think Italy is getting some juice after a big win against France in their opener. So I think I'm going to take Sweden. I think Sweden is going to take care of business. Germany, we're also going to take... This is all Puck Line. Germany, we're going to take plus one and a half against Japan. Japan's squeaked by France in their opener. While Germany put up a good fight against Sweden, even though they lost 4 to 1, I think Germany's got a better team overall. I'll take Germany with the goals against Japan. Then look, we're all USA supporting here. We're going to take USA against the Finnish team. That's sick. Usa's favorite to win gold, Roy. They looked really good in their opening win over Chechnya. Finland hasn't played yet because half the team has the norovirus or norovirus or whatever it's called.

00:17:56

So maybe there'll be a little lag. We'll take US with the spread. All the odds on this one is plus 428. Nice and friendly. Let's go win some Olympic money.

00:18:04

All right, it's time for the Hockey Stat of the Week. The Hockey Stat of the Week. Hi, Ethan.

00:18:12

Hi, guys. Hello. How are you doing? How are you doing? Panthers fans, close your ears for this one, this Hockey Stat of the Week. Serge Bobrowski, currently fifth to last in the NHL with minus 14. 2 goals saved above expected this season. Just shows how dire goaltending situation has been for the Panthers this year. As great as Bob has been, he's an absolute Hall of Fame goaltender. Changed the course of this franchise. That contract was worth every single penny. A big reason why the Panthers are in the situation right now is because Serge Bobrowski has not played well enough. We can talk about the situation in front of him, but at the end of the day, he is fifth to last in the NHL in goals saved above expected.

00:18:53

All right, it is time for Rosa in Un Minuto. Rosie, go ahead.

00:18:56

Where's my song? Well, we don't have time for you to search for… Oh, there it is. Okay. That was loud. Let's do this. Un Minuto de Jorge, con Rosa. Le dijo, este es un Minuto de Jorge, con Rosa. Esta vez, nos vamos acarrenando de todo. Está en calma hasta que no lo está. La. But Colina dijo, Tranquilos, tenemos un plan. That was Rosa in un minuto.

00:20:00

Thank you, Rosie.

00:20:01

For those who don't know Spanish, I'm going to give it to you in English.

00:20:03

It's time for Rosa in a minute. Let's do it. Yes.

00:20:06

Okay. Let's do it, everybody. I just said that. Because this is one minute of hockey with Rosa, and this time we're heading to Carolina, where everything is calm until it's not. The week started badly. They were up 3-0 against Washington and still lost in overtime. Yes, impressive. But Carolina said, Relax. We got a plan. A 3-2 win over the Kings, and now home saving the day in overtime, and Buzi proving it wasn't a fluke. Let's explore. Then more control. A 4-3 win over Ottawa with Jordan Style showing up like a true captain. And Sal Jarvis scoring twice. And they close things out with a not disturbed mode. A 2-0 win over the Rangers. Another shout out to Baybasie. And a trick of 10 Straight games earning points. Final results, three wins, one lost. First place, zero panic. And best reminder that Carolina decides to turn it off, the competition is over. Because in Carolina, it doesn't always rain, but when it does, it pours. This was in one minute of hockey with Rose. You're with me, we have a park passion and a little bit of chaos. And now, Ethan is going to pick up my team for next week.

00:21:06

All right, Ethan, what is Rose going to talk about next week?

00:21:11

He's in Romage.

00:21:12

He's in Romage.

00:21:14

The Washington The Washington Capitals.

00:21:16

I don't think it's a good team.

00:21:18

All right, but there you go.

00:21:19

No, you get Ovechkin. You get Jacob Chikrin.

00:21:22

There you go.

00:21:23

Who is the real snob for Team Canada, by the way. Not Evan Bouchard. Jacob Chikrin should be on Team Canada.

00:21:27

Speaking of Team Canada, Seth Jarvis is now on the team.

00:21:31

As is Sam Bennett.

00:21:32

As is Sam Bennett. So good for them. Congratulations. It's time for wins and fails of the week. Go ahead, Dave.

00:21:37

All right. What should I start with? My winner might fail, Roy?

00:21:40

Well, we usually go in order with wins.

00:21:42

You're driving, so I just want to make sure I'm on the right lane.

00:21:45

I'm driving us into the win section. All right.

00:21:48

Well, win lane. We've been talking about- The wins are in the win column. Oh, nice. Nice Joe Angel. I like that. Joe Angel and Tommy Hutton. We are definitely far field. All right. My win of the week. We've been talking about it a lot today. It's the Olympics. My win is just the US women getting a huge win in their Olympic opener. The Olympic tournament is here. The US women are off to a great start. They got the big 5-1 win against Chechnya. I mentioned it earlier. Haley Stamara had two goals. Alex Carpenter had a goal and assist. Hilary Knight had a gorgeous goal. And Erin Frankl stopped 13 shots. I like that the US held Chechnya to only 14 shots against. I'm just so happy to see Olympic hockey back on my TV, Roy. I'm really excited for what I've seen so far. I can't wait for the men's tournament to start next week, and I'm just pumped up, dude.

00:22:29

I'm keeping My win in that specific game because Leila Edwards is a star, and she had a coming-out party in that game. Us 1-5 to 1, obviously. She had an assist in that game. She was a plus one, had three shots on goal. She took a trip and call, but also drew a trip and call. She got first deep pair of minutes with 20 minutes and 45 seconds. She did very well. She's going to be a star. And eventually, when Canada plays United States, Leila is going to be on the ice facing off against Sarah Nurse and Sophie Jock, which means for the first time ever, there will be more than one Black person, Black woman, playing in the same game in the Olympics. So that is going to be very special. And with that, a shout out to Black Girl Hockey Club. Renee Hess and Fatou Barr was in New Jersey representing the culture and creating space for Black women in hockey as they usually do. They were in New Jersey. There was a video that's going to be played here with Fatou holding a sign saying Black Girl Hockey Club at the Prudential Center as the Islanders played the New Jersey Devils.

00:23:44

Fatou was also at Winter Classic and Stadium Series and helped us out tremendously as the Hockey Show covered both events. So that's a win for Leila. That's a win for Black Girl Hockey Club and a win for representation in the sport of hockey. Ethan.

00:24:00

My win of the week, guys, comes from last night's Panthers game. It was about the only good thing that happened for the Panthers. Watch Gustave Forzling just beat the absolute crap out of JJ Moser here. You have to do something really, really bad to piss Gustave Forzling off and get your ass whipped like this, and he just Mollywops him. I know that things were ugly. Kachuk maybe threw a little cheap shot at Kucharov. It's about time somebody finally pointed him out and how dirty he is sometimes, especially against the Panthers. So it was great to see Forzling just whipping on JJ Moser. Yeah, things get ugly when the Panthers in lightning play right now, guys. This was great, though. These are the kinds of things that happen.

00:24:35

If you watch this play out, everybody's focused on Matthew Kachuk and Brandon Hagle throwing haymakers at each other. But if you watch, Moser kept throwing, not He was antagonizing Forzling. He kept throwing punches at Forzling, and Forzling is just backing away like, No, dude.

00:24:49

Wait, so you mean to tell me that the lightning are actually usually the antagonists and the ones that usually get the Panthers started?

00:24:56

No, it goes both... Relax, Panthers fan. Okay, just put your flag down for a second.

00:25:00

Did you see that last Lightning game, though?

00:25:02

They go at each other. They go at each other. I'm not saying it's a rivalry. I'm not saying one is more physical. I'm saying in this specific instance, Moser was going after Forzling during this Scrum, and Forzling wanted nothing to do with it. Because it's Gus Forzling. He's the most chill guy on the team. Exactly. But he's also the most cut, ripped, in-shaped guy on the team. So you don't want to mess with Gus Forzling. To see him just like, Okay, red light, green light. I'm going. Moser had no shot. Badass. No shot. So badass.

00:25:29

At least Brandon Hagle didn't get hurt this time. Rosie, what's your win?

00:25:34

My win of the week. I hate bugs, but this bug has... Bug? Yeah. This bug has got to my heart. Thunder Bug.

00:25:42

Didn't he almost run us over right after he did this? Oh, really? When we were walking in, never. We were walking into the stadium.

00:25:47

The presence and everything. I'm going to do that.

00:25:50

He did. He almost ran us over in the media entrance.

00:25:53

Yeah, we were walking in for the game, and all of a sudden, we hear, Beep, beep, beep, watch out, watch out, and freaking Thunderbuck.

00:25:59

Thunderbuck didn't do his job well.

00:26:01

I had to dive in a bush, which we've definitely seen that through a Gasparilla.

00:26:08

That was a common occurrence for sure.

00:26:10

Oh, boy.

00:26:11

Maybe the highlight of our trip was the 30 minutes that we sat in traffic. We moved maybe 30 feet, and it was the best, most entertaining 30 minutes of my life.

00:26:19

I wish we had more time to talk about that because that was crazy.

00:26:22

Oh, my God, dude.

00:26:23

All right, fail of the week.

00:26:24

Fail of the week. All right. Nikita Zadora. I've had an interesting exchange with the referee during the stadium series game that Roy and I were at in Tampa. As you guys, I'm sure, know there was an amazing goalie fight between Andre Vassilesti and Jeremy Swayman that had us all pumped up. I'm still jacked up over it. But after the fight, Zadora had an interesting little exchange with the referee about who should be sitting in the penalty box and serving these goalie fight penalties. Play it, please.

00:26:50

Here, what's the ruling? It stays 5 on 4. But the goalie can stay in? Discrimination. No, good. Why discrimination? We're good. We're I fight, I have to sit in the cold box.

00:27:02

Let's move on, okay? The rep's just like, Let's move on. Let's move on, okay? But that's such a good argument. When I fight, I have to sit in the cold box. They get to keep playing. Like, Yeah, well, you know what? You should have been a goalie.

00:27:12

I'm very confused about this rule because a long time ago, when the goalie tend to spot, they actually got game misconduct. When they crossed the red line, it was penalties. I don't understand the rule here. I don't know if it was changed or not. I need more clarification. Maybe we should ask Greg that.

00:27:31

Maybe. What was interesting about this goalie fight was that both goalies crossed the red line.

00:27:35

Yes.

00:27:36

Which is like, Okay, well, let's keep it all even. I loved it. They both took their helmets off ahead of time. They both were giving each other pats in the back afterwards. That was such a great goalie fight from start to finish.

00:27:46

Same for the Deltkowitch-Babrowski fight.

00:27:49

That one, I feel like, had more anger in it, though.

00:27:51

Yes, it wasn't staged.

00:27:52

The big copycat.

00:27:54

The big copycat.

00:27:56

Oh, no, you didn't.

00:27:57

Bob throws hands in a week and a half later. Vasileski throws hands? Yeah.

00:28:02

The big copycat. It was staged. The league made him do it. All right, my fail of the week, and I say this with a smile on my face.

00:28:07

Your word's not mine.

00:28:09

Tony D'Angelo. I mentioned, by the way, my win of the week was basically representation in the sport of hockey. This guy is the complete opposite of representation in the sport of hockey. So at this point, he should be a Hall of Famer in the Wins and Fails column because this fool would be first ballot in the fail ring. So this is what happened during Monday's Islanders game against the Capitals. Nick Dow, who, by the way, his 500th game had his shot deflected from the side of the crease off of Adam Pelick, off of his stick and eventually off of the skate of Tony DiAngelo. That goal made it three to one. The Capitals eventually won four to one. And funny enough, Craig Lachland said on the Capitals broadcast that good things happen to good people.

00:29:02

I heard that, too.

00:29:04

That was so funny. So what does that make Tony D'Angelo?

00:29:06

I just love that. You never miss an opportunity.

00:29:10

Hey, man, it's always on my radar. It's like a big bogey. Which is a big bird flying into a plane. Yeah. Yeah. He's the fail of the Week Hall of Famer. Let's book that right now, Ethan.

00:29:22

No. Rosie.

00:29:22

So Ethan doesn't have one.

00:29:24

Eventually, Ethan is going to last. Rosie.

00:29:25

No, no, no. Ethan doesn't have one. You don't have one? Yeah, no. So we're going to finish with mine.

00:29:29

Good week. The Olympics, my birthday. No fails this week. My ass. Look at Queen Hughes.

00:29:33

That's how we all feel this week. So that's my fail of the week. One, two, three. Very sleepy.

00:29:40

Did you see him fall down in warmups last week? I'm so sorry. In the background of Rock Faber being interviewed. Did you see him just wipe out on his ass? Un Unbelievable.

00:29:47

I love Quin Hughes. This is like that funny video of women wearing high heels and bringing their ankles just falling down. For those of you watching on DraftKings Network, please check out our YouTube video because coming up next, we have ESPN senior, NHL Showing writer, Greg Bershinsky. That's coming up next on The Hockey Show.

00:31:33

Greg Prycinski is one of those guys. We're going to talk to him because he's our friend and we like talking about hockey. Hockey is what we talk about on the show because that's the name of the show. The name of the show is The Hockey Show. Let's start with the big news this week. There were two trades that happened before the Olympic Roster freeze hit. The Blues traded nick Buckstead to the Devils for Thomas Bordelow in a conditional fourth-round pick.

00:31:58

The Blockbuster.

00:32:00

That's the second biggest trade of the two trades. The second? The other trade was the Rangers trading on Timmy Panarin to the Kings for Liam Green tree, and two conditional third-round picks in 2026. The Kings then extended Panarin to a two-year contract worth $11 million per year. The Rangers immediately got shut out at home by the hurricanes. Greg, please explain this trade. Why the Kings? Where do the Rangers go from here, which is probably first round traffic. To the lottery. And what would the top prospect in the Kings organization work out in New York?

00:32:40

All right. Well, I mean, I had a solid 20 on nick Bukestead, but I guess I'll just trash that.

00:32:45

Yeah, we could throw that away.

00:32:46

We respect nick Bukestad, former Panther.

00:32:48

Yeah, I got you.

00:32:49

He's a tall guy. A nice dude, too. So the Panarin situation is interesting because here's how I think it worked out. He wanted to go to the Florida Panthers. The Florida Panthers are like, This cap space that we have, it's for this guy, Barkoff, who's going to come back and play for us at some point this season. So I'm afraid we don't have any more of it for you. And so then Panarin and his family are like, What's like Miami, but not? And they're like, Los Angeles. And so what happened then was the Rangers went to all of these teams that were interested in trading for Panarin, and they said, Look, you guys all are willing to go four years, 11 million per, maybe even more than that. But you're going to have to convince him that your spot is better than Los Angeles, which is a tough gig if your team is in Raleigh. So at the At the end of the day, other teams offered more money and they offered longer-term contracts, Washington, Carolina, among them. Seattle, apparently, got into the mix, too, according to Elliott Friedmann. But Panarin's heart was set on Los Angeles.

00:33:58

It's a one-market trade market for the Rangers and GM Chris Drury. When that happens, and the guy has a no-movement clause, and the guy is only going to a place where he's going to get a contract extension, you're going to take what you can get. I actually gave the Rangers a B on my trade grade because I thought they did as good as they're going to do in this situation. Liam Green tree is a player that has a lot of potential. To answer your question, I'm a little bit worried about the Rangers's development team being the ones to tap it because they have an absolutely atrocious track record with prospects, turning out to be good players. Shout out Capo Caco. But for the Kings, it's a great move. I mean, you don't get locked into a long-term deal. You only have them this year and then two more. He solves a lot of problems for this team, which is they can't score and their power play stinks, and they needed to have more offensive depth if they were going to ever have a prayer of winning a round in the playoffs, which is basically where the bar is for this franchise right now.

00:34:56

Beating Edmondson in the first round, I feel like, is the bar if they can ever Finally.

00:35:00

No, the bar is avoiding Edmondson in the first round. They've lost four straight seasons. Do whatever. Even if you got to get kicked in the teeth by Colorado, at least you're not seeing Edmondson again in the first round.

00:35:12

Do you find it a little surprising, I guess, that Panarin didn't want to go to his best chance at winning a cup? I mean, no disrespect to the Kings, but they're certainly not maybe a top-tier team in the lead right now. But Panarin clearly valued location over victory. I guess to me, that's a little surprising, but I'm curious what you thought.

00:35:32

It's not to me. When he was a free agent, gosh, it must have been, what, 2017, 2018, some of that neighborhood, and was leaving Columbus, it was pretty clear that geography was extremely important for him. In theory, he wanted to play in Florida, like his friend, Serge Brobrovsky, ended up doing with the Panthers. But with New York on the table, that was an option. And he gladly went to play in New York with a big contract and trade protection. In this case, he wanted to play. I had heard that it was important for him and his family to play in a place that they wanted to live. And clearly, Los Angeles is a place they wanted to live. That's a huge factor for him, maybe even more so than winning, unless you're bullish on the King's prospects post-Anjay Kopitar this season. And that's just how it is for some guys. Like I said, hockey players are just like this, man. You guys know my bit, whenever they sign whenever a guy decides to stay in Winnipeg, his stuff is there. That's how he thinks sometimes. And in the case of Panarin and his family, the beach is there, I guess we could say.

00:36:40

He certainly ain't signing for tax purposes. Maybe we could put that to rest for a second in the NHL. Going from playing in New York to playing in California, clearly, he's not looking for the old Florida, Dallas discount like other guys were.

00:36:56

All right, Wish, enough about this NHL bullshit. Nobody wants to talk about this league The Olympics are here. What the hell are you talking about? The Olympics are here. The Panthers are out of the playoffs. Nobody cares about the NHL anymore. The Olympics are here. How juiced up are you and how badly are we going to beat Canada's ass coming in a few weeks?

00:37:11

We're not going to talk about the NHL in a second. What are you talking about?

00:37:15

Let's not talk about the NHL. Let's just talk about all the NHL players in Italy. Correct.

00:37:20

110% correct.

00:37:22

Listen, man, here's where I am as an American hockey fan. I would be shocked if Canada didn't play for gold unless their goal-tending just turned into a giant pile of poopoo, which I don't think it will, because if Jordan Bennington ain't the solution, Logan Thompson or Darcy Kemper could be. I think they've got a better group of goalies than they had in Four Nations behind Bennington. But as an American, who would love nothing more than to never have to think about or hear about or talk about Mike Arruzioni again and have a new beautiful legend to hang on to as an American hockey fan of winning gold at the Olympics. I'm a little nervous, and here's why I'm nervous. I think they'll come a time in the quarterfinals or the semifinals when they're down 2-1 to Slovakia or Finland in the third period. And the pressure of, Oh, my God, what if we don't play for gold? And the pressure of, Oh, my God, what if we don't get another shot at Canada? Might have them gripping their sticks and might have them flopping before playing in a metal game.

00:38:27

They're going to be messing up hotel rooms again?

00:38:29

I I would. I mean, the K'Chucks are going to be there. There's a good chance of it happening. So that's my concern. In all honesty, this is the deepest, most talented group of Americans we've ever put on a national hockey team. They should play for gold. Based on what we saw in Four Nations with a healthy Quin Hughes, with more offense than they had in that game, Tate Thompson, a healthier K'Chuck, they should be Canada, too.

00:38:59

Not My one concern- No, I'm nervous.

00:39:01

I'm nervous.

00:39:02

I'm nervous because when I look at this US roster, which is incredibly deep, no doubt, I don't really see a lot of championship experience on this roster. I don't see a lot of guys that I'm like, Oh, I know this guy can perform and crunch time. I mean, Austin Matthews, Jack Hughes, Eichel, I guess, is one of Stanley Cup. Matthew Kchuck. Yeah, Matthew K'Chuck. But I'm just thinking like, Man, Canada is full of gold medal winners, Stanley Cup winners. That's going to come into too.

00:39:31

Yeah, I'm with you. And you're relying a lot, I think, on Eichel in this situation, who's been fantastic for Vegas this year, and I think is going to be the counterbalance to the way that Matthew sometimes can play in key situations. Eichel is a guy who rises to the occasion. But there's not a lot of those guys on the roster, and I agree with you. That's what makes me a little bit nervous. I mean, you look over Canada, if they're shoulders or something, they got Cindy Crosby in the room to be like, Hey, boys, I've done this a few times. We don't have that on the United States. And so there's a lot of reliance, I think, on the coach. There's a lot of reliance on how good the goal-tending is. And again, at the end of the day, is this roster constructed correctly? Because I've been screaming it from the rooftop since they put it together. This is a team designed to beat Canada when it's a team that should be designed to be Canada. Put Lane Hudson on the roster, put Cole Caulfield on the roster, put the best and brightest offensive stars that we have in the talent pool on this roster, and just steamroll everybody.

00:40:36

But instead, it's built more towards the grit and grind. I like to call it Red, White, and Blue pilled from 1980, where they believe they need a bunch of lunchpale guys on every American hockey roster in order to win in the Olympics. I would have preferred to have just seen them put the pedal down, flex on how deep the talent pool is amongst goal scores and go from there, but that's not the team they built.

00:40:58

Gavin McKinnon got himself in a bit of trouble over the past week. How is this felony assault going to affect not only his draft stock, but his career coming up?

00:41:10

First of all, it's like NCAA hockey just not on the level of basketball and football where they can't just make this thing disappear. They're going to be much there. For every other athlete that's ever gotten in trouble. Listen, man, it's a serious deal. He's got a felony one charge for allegedly breaking someone's jaw in a fight outside a bar. The process begins next week insofar as the preliminary hearing and everything else. I haven't talked to anybody that believes he's going to do time for this, but you never know insofar as being charged with some serious stuff. But how is it going to affect his draft position? He's a hockey player, friends. It can only help. Can you imagine someone like Bill Garen of the Minnesota Wild being like, Keep me away from Gavin He broke a guy's jaw with a punch outside a bar. No, this is the thing that endears him to NHL general managers insofar as his raucous toughness. Remember, we're not too far removed from Joe Thornton, a young Joe Thornton, getting into a bar fight. Back when he was just a skinny guy that passed the buck. Then he got into a bar fight and people were seeing him differently.

00:42:22

That wouldn't be surprised if there's a bunch of NHL general managers that look at what Gab and McKenna did here and they're like, Oh, I was unfamiliar with your game, sir.

00:42:30

Gavin McKenna is going to fit right in on the Florida Panthers. When that top 10 protected pick ends up being number one, Gavin McKenna is going to be a perfect fit for the Panthers.

00:42:39

Fun fact, Matthew Schafer, 10th overall odds the Islanders had. Just saying, it's not I heard of.

00:42:45

The lottery works in mysterious ways, and there's going to be a bunch of really interesting teams in the lottery this year, including two New York teams, Florida. A lot of teams that will have a shot at this kid.

00:42:56

I'm just looking forward to seeing how the NHL is going to make everything I think uncomfortable during this draft.

00:43:02

Somehow it'll go to Pittsburgh.

00:43:04

No, they're in a playoff.

00:43:06

I don't care. Somehow.

00:43:07

They're going to be like, fourth in the east, and they'll get the first overall pick somehow.

00:43:13

That's really funny. I was saying this morning, the Penguin story is one of the most remarkable things I've seen in so far as where we all thought they'd finish and where they are. We were all expecting at this point to be talking about where they're going to trade sit at the trade deadline, but instead, they look like they're going to be a playoff team. It will all be worth it if we get one more Pittsburgh-Washington playoff series. It'll all be worth it to get that. I would be done. Of course. But I think Washington's got to hold up their end of the bargain there.

00:43:43

Of course. Yeah, Just like stadium series, everything's staged. The league is just...

00:43:49

Yeah, it's all scripted.

00:43:50

You think the whole league is K-Fabe?

00:43:52

Yeah, the entire thing is K-Fabe. Listen, seven consecutive power plays for the Lightning during stadium series. What is that?

00:43:59

It's a It was a fun comeback. That's what that was.

00:44:01

It's an undisciplined performance by the Boston Bruins is what that is.

00:44:07

The most penalized team in the NHL committing a lot of penalties. Where have we ever seen that before?

00:44:11

Two penalties in overtime. Two penalties in overtime.

00:44:14

How? You think Swayman was wearing an earpiece and someone's screaming, go, go, go, when he's thinking about going out?

00:44:21

That, I believe more than they handed them the game with seven. Or I believe that maybe Swayman and Vatsileski before the game were wink, wink This is right after the intermission, though, Ethan.

00:44:31

This is right after the intermission, though, Ethan.

00:44:32

Bobrowski fought a couple of weeks ago. Let's try and do something new. Wink, wink, wink, wink.

00:44:36

This is after the intermission. They went to both locker rooms and told, Hey, listen.

00:44:41

I told you guys, the big copycat.

00:44:43

Listen to yourselves. The big copycat. This was super- It's bullshit, Dave. No, we're talking about how this was maybe the most entertaining stadium series ever. It gave us a goalie fight. It gave us a five goal comeback. And we're bitching?

00:44:55

It's not that we're bitching, Dave. It's that we're coping because the Panthers are going to miss the playoff.

00:44:59

I used to believe I refuse to believe that the same league that tried to keep John Scott out of the All-Star Game is the league that is now setting up games to succeed on national television. Come on. You're getting him too much credit.

00:45:10

No, they went all out of control on that one. That was just fancy. It's just like, hey, faith, they do not listen to the fans. They want to do their own thing until the fans actually say, Do this, and then they finally kowtow.

00:45:21

That's right.

00:45:22

Yeah. It's the next scary Bettman press conference, all the fans are going to be chanting, Bring back, Vince. You're right.

00:45:30

Yeah, let's not bring back, Vince. Let's not do that.

00:45:32

That's not do that at all. No. I never understood that chant. I understand it's like an anti-Triple H chant at these shows, but man, folks, read the room.

00:45:41

Yes, please. Please. Tribuish is doing a fine job.

00:45:45

Let's not go down that road.

00:45:46

Let's not go down. Greg Rysinski of ESPN. He is the NHL senior writer. We appreciate him coming on the show because we love him, and that's just how things go. Greg, thank you for joining us. Anytime. Once again, thanks to Greg Rysinski of ESPN. Before we go, we do have the time to talk about what happened in Tampa and what happened while we were waiting on the street.

00:46:08

Oh, that story.

00:46:09

Yes, that story. Dave, why don't you tell everybody what happened and what we witnessed?

00:46:14

Well, sitting in traffic next to the Tampa Lightning Arena, like during Gasparela, so people were walking around pirate outfits all around our car, we barely moved. But it was perfect because on the sidewalk, there was two things that were happening that had our attention. The first was a young couple, maybe about It looked like they were old enough to drink. But they had a fight going on that was going up and down the sidewalk. The drama, the tears, throwing the phones, pushing each other away. It was everything that you'd want to see on a street, drunk fight and more.

00:46:45

I think she actually called the cops and he hid around the corner next to a building.

00:46:49

They disappeared for a minute. They came out. A security guard was watching them. We didn't know if they disappeared for some mid-fight fun and shenanigans, and then they came back and resumed the fight. I wasn't sure. That's where my went with it. But then in the middle of all this, we got an intermission show. Was it two or three? It was two. Two women dressed very piratey, stumbling down the sidewalk.

00:47:13

One big girl, one thin girl.

That's the one I remember. Then between, I don't know if it was Roy or if it was Penyoda, but one of the two in the car was giving us play by play. It was like, Oh, this one's on the left leg. Oh, wait, she's teetering on the right leg. Then all of a sudden, into the bushes, they both went. Into the bushes, they both stayed.

00:47:30

For about a minute and a half.

00:47:31

Yeah, I'd say a good 90 seconds. They were in the bush. It was hard to see them get out. But let me tell you, sitting in traffic, waiting to get to the bar, this was the best entertainment we could have gotten in Tampa.

00:47:40

It was like a couple of trees falling in the forest, and all you could do was like, Oh, right into the bushes. So yeah, that was a lot of fun. Just like the game was a lot of fun. So we enjoyed our time in Tampa. So that is the end of this week's show. It is all Olympics from here on out for Gino and whoever else. Who's the director back there?

00:48:04

Danny?

00:48:05

Danny. Danny is back there as well. Thank you, Gino and Danny. Rosie and Ethan, thank you. You guys did an excellent job. That's David Dworak. My name is Roy Belmy. We will talk about the Olympics next week.

00:48:17

See.

Episode description

The NHL is heading to Milan, but before it gets there, the gang is all here to discuss the fight involving Gavin McKenna outside a bar at Penn State this past weekend, which has the presumptive #1 overall pick possibly facing 20 years in prison. David and Roy recap their time at the Stadium Series in Tampa, and the gang dives into the Panthers Den after another brutal week that may have put the final nail in the coffin of the two-time defending Stanley Cup Champions. Ethan has a stat of the week on Sergei Bobrovsky's fall-off this season, and Rosa En Un Minuto features the Carolina Hurricanes. In wins and fails, Roy celebrates highlights in the sport; David celebrates the US women getting off to a great start in Milan; Ethan cheers on Gustav Forsling, whooping up on JJ Moser; and Thunderbug has stolen Rose's heart. Then, ESPN's Greg Wyshynski joins the crew to discuss the Artemi Panarin trade, break down the McKenna situation further, and tell us what his feelings are about Team USA heading into the Olympic Games.
