We're here in Tampa, Florida, at Raymond James Stadium. Another outdoor game. Nice, Mike Milt. It could be It could be historic or it could be chaos. This is the Hockey Show.

00:00:40

The favorite drug of the Hockey News is right here.

00:00:50

Ethan and Rosie is in the studio. I'm Roy Belmy. We are in Tampa for Stadium Series. This is The Hockey Show. You can watch us on YouTube at the Hockey Show DLS. We're on TikTok at the Hockey Show 7 and on Instagram and threads at Hockey Show DLS. As I said, we are in Tampa, and we got to look at the forecast, and it said snow flurries. That's crazy. I don't think it's going to actually snow, but it's going to be interesting here.

00:01:21

It's cool. I think I mentioned it the other day on X, the hockey gods aren't only smiling at Tampa, but they're laughing at us right now because it's not just cold. It's Florida cold. It's really cold. It's going to get down potentially into the 30s over the next couple of nights. So definitely fortunate because as we saw down in Miami, they got amazing weather for the Winter Classic down there. Couldn't have asked for better. So, yeah, it's just pretty awesome how it's all working out for the NHL and these outdoor games here in Florida.

00:01:48

What do you say is going to be the main difference that's going to happen between when a classic and stadium series outside of the location? What do you think is going to happen?

00:01:58

I think it's just going to feel a lot because it's a much bigger stadium. It's more open. There's going to be a lot more fans, probably going to be a lot noisier. The fact that they've had to build the ice under this massive tent behind us just to make sure that whatever weather implement might happen didn't impact the ice build. But I don't know. It's just really cool. The way that they're building it on a giant pirate map, I think it's really neat. There's just a lot that after they blew me away with my expectations for the Winter Classic, my bar is significantly raised for this one, and I really think they're going to kill it.

00:02:29

Have you guys been to the ice already or you haven't been able to see it?

00:02:33

No, we literally just got here for the recording of the hockey show. We haven't gone down to see any of the build. I don't know if we'll be able to go down to see any of the build. We might get thrown out of here. That was a good question, Rosie. We're going to have to ask. We're going to ask some questions. You think we're going to get thrown out of here?

00:02:49

I think if we do what we were talking about and try just sneak down there with our skates, somebody might grab us by the back of our collar and Fred Flintstone us out the window. But we got to It's so unique, so cool. We got to see if there's some way if we can get down there.

00:03:03

All right, so we're going to figure it out, but it looks beautiful out there. The sun is out. It is chilly. I don't know if we got the 50 degrees yet, but it's a bit chilly, but it's better than New York. It is a disaster up there, a whole bunch of snow and such. I found this interesting. This happened, apparently. The National Hockey League is not issuing supplemental discipline anymore. That task has been sent over to the Department of Player Safety. So George Prowson and boys are going to take over handing out fines and suspensions for everything that's in the rule book. Now, the fans have not been happy with the DPS, the way they've been handling things as far as the physical aspect of the rule book, as far as boarding and illegal checks to the head. They have not been happy because some issues have been skirted, others have been, I guess, either rightfully or not rightfully been supplemented. There's been discipline for that. What do you think of this move? Is it going to get any better? What are we talking about here?

00:04:11

You'd like to think that if they're making a change, that there's a plan behind it with how it's going to be different and why. I think as you talk about a lot of what people have been frustrated with, as we're in-person in a press box right now, so we're always got to do some in-person producing. That's what you're seeing right now. But no, I think one of the big issues that people have had with the DPOS and just fines and suspensions have been handed out is the inconsistencies where they can look at one play and say, Okay, I see that that was a suspension, but now I see this play, and it looks almost identical, and the punishment is much different. I think that's where a lot of the frustration comes. I'm hoping that with this change, the idea is that they're going to maybe have... They've got some a new hierarchy or a way that they're going to judge these things just to make it seem a little bit more uniform, because I think that's why a lot of people get upset, is that we really have no idea what the hell they're doing.

00:04:57

I'm sure this will turn down the noise. Sorry, guys. I'm sure this will only turn down the noise. Also, you forgot to say hi to the most important guest on the show today, which is Percy. Percy's back. But I'm sure this will-Ethan, why are you in the back? Something was going on.

00:05:12

That's a good story.

00:05:12

This is actually a really good story. Something was going on. I was sitting at the seat I normally sit at, Roy. But for some reason, at that seat only, there was piano music in the headphones, and it was driving me absolutely bonkers. I could not figure out why there was piano music coming from the headphones, and it was driving me insane. So I had to move. Otherwise, I might have literally lost my head on this show. And that's before we even talk about the Florida Panthers.

00:05:39

Hold on. Let's dive into this piano situation a little bit more. Yeah. Okay. That's fine. Did Rose hear this piano music? No.

00:05:45

No, no. It was just Ethan. When I put the headphones, wow, it was there.

00:05:49

I got in and I'm like, Why do I hear piano music? And Rose is like, I don't hear piano music. And I'm like, Okay, now something's really wrong. So then I went around all of the headsets in the shipping container, and none of the headsets in the shipping container were hearing piano music. For some reason, only your seat, Roy, was hearing piano music. It's your fault, Roy. I don't know why. So I don't know. I don't know. It was freaky. And I'm asking Jason. I'm like, Jason, why is there piano music? And nobody's giving me an answer. And then I turned off everything that was on on the board to see if something was playing out piano music, whether that be a soundboard or something. I don't know what. Here comes GQ to try and solve the problem, I'm guessing. But there was piano music coming from that chair, and I don't understand why. I'm telling you, I literally was like, I've been super busy today running around doing a bunch of stuff. I was about to go crazy. I was about to absolutely lose my head. Anyway- Did Jeremy bring his piano? No.

00:06:49

He was just cat-amusing.

00:06:50

You would think. He would think. That guy loves... Nobody loves playing a piano more than Jeremy Tashay, let me tell you.

00:06:56

All right, as you were saying, Ethan.

00:06:57

Yeah, I'm sure this will turn down the noise on the fact that George Peros played for the Florida Panthers back in the day, and so that he apparently has some favoritism towards the Florida Panthers. But GQ, listen, give it up for Danny GQ, guys. Hey, Danny.

00:07:11

The best.

00:07:14

Anyway, I don't know too much about how this process works, Roy, but I just look it through everything through a Florida Panthers lens. Well, I'll cut that for the club. I look at everything through a Florida Panthers lens, and I'm sure this will turn down the noise now that George Paros seemingly has full control over suspensions and those things.

00:07:34

I say, Turn the volume up. Bring all the noise. At this point, who cares? As long as they keep on churning out the way they have been, the way that the Panthers are probably going to go for the next several years, Ethan, just keep bringing it up. George Paros, Colin Campbell, I don't care.

00:07:47

I love it, dude. No, I love it. I love how mad it makes everybody that the Panthers supposedly get all the calls, even though last night they had another bad call go against them. We saw what happened on Tuesday night in the game against Utah, where you have that stupid embellishment rule, and then a hold on the empty net gets completely missed. It's just the most ridiculous narrative out there. But that's the narrative that you get when you win two Stanley Cups back to back, and people are really mad about it because you're from the state of Florida.

00:08:15

All right, while we're talking about the Panthers and while Percy's on your console, let's go into the Panthers then and talk about the week that was. The Panthers finally got Matthew Kuchuk and Brad Marshan in the same lineup for the first time since they lifted the Stanley Cup. Now, I got a lot of shit.

00:08:30

For about seven periods.

00:08:32

For about seven periods. Now, I got a lot of shit against the spread during the big show last week because apparently, I failed to mention that it's the first time ever that Matthew Kuchuk and Brad Marshan played in a regular season. They lifted the Stanley Cup together. Give me a break, all right? Let's get off. Give me a break here. I'm just trying to give a pick, all right? Well, they're making fun of me for no apparent reason. But it was the first time ever in a regular season that those two got to play together. Let's go with it this week, all right? So the Panthers beat Minnesota in Minnesota. That was a big win, 4 to 3 in overtime. Then the Panthers trounced the Blackhawks 5 to 1. They came home, lost to Utah in just a ridiculously annoying game. They had the two- They don't embellish. Okay. They had the two embellishment calls. And then Florida lost to St. Louis 5 to 4 in a game that should have went to overtime, but they didn't go to overtime because of that terrible We're penalty on Nico Michela. So that's where we are right now.

00:09:34

The Panthers are back at home on Saturday. We're going to miss that game. They are playing the Winnipeg Jets. So let's talk about the week that was, David.

00:09:42

I'm pissed. I'm pissed off because of the embellishment calls. I hate that call in general. I think it should just be taken out completely. These are hockey players. Look at what Trevor Zedrish did. Excuse me, not Trevor Zedrish did. Look at what McAlin Salabrini did. We'll get to that later. It's just in terms of how hockey players are good people. But can we just get rid of the embellishment call? And then also, stop bleeping. I almost dropped an F-bomb button. Stop bleeping, pushing your own players or the other team's players into your own goalie. Can we stop doing that? Because A, goalies are getting hurt. B, these dumb-ass I don't know if these are getting called. I'm just very frustrated over DPOS. I hope you're going to get your shit together. That's all I got.

00:10:23

Yeah, I was at that Utah Game Boys, and that was tough. I mean, that was probably the most frustrated I've been after a Panther game this year. I should have put the video in. There's this really funny video Kirsten took of me walking out of the stadium, yelling on the phone at my dad because of how annoying the game was. But it feels like right now, each loss that the Panthers suffer is dumber and more frustrating than the last one because the stakes keep going up. I mean, last night's loss puts you eight points out of a playoff spot. You have two huge games next week when you play Buffalo and Boston, not back to back, but Tuesday, or Monday, and then Wednesday. It's going to be a really tough stretch for the Panthers right now. Basically, at this Olympic break, they're going to have to get back to within about four points if they want a real chance. But eight points with 30 games left, and nobody in the Atlantic seems to want to lose. I mean, everybody just keeps winning. Boston is on fire. I mean, look at these records recently. The Bolts are 16, one and one in their last 18.

00:11:28

The Red Wings are eight, two and two in their last 12. The Sabers are 23 and one in their last 24, and the Bruins are 12, two and one in their last 15. The Panthers aren't necessarily playing at a bad pace right now. The teams in front of them are just playing at such insane paces that they can't keep up with them. They're going to have to not only get hot, but the teams in front of them are going to have to come back down to Earth if they're going to want to make a playoff spot. It's going to be tough because none of these teams seem to want to go away.

00:11:56

According to ChatGPT, Oh, no.

00:12:00

Yes.

00:12:01

The Florida Panthers have roughly a 56 % chance of making the playoffs. So maybe my hot takes that I did way earlier, they're going to be true and they're not going to even make the playoffs. 56 % is a number that I believe, but how they're playing, I think, is going to go down, down, down, and down.

00:12:23

I believe Moneypuck would have been a better source for that, Rosie.

00:12:26

I'll check Moneypuck right now, Roy.

00:12:29

It went to Moneypuck, actually. It actually says, Moneypuck.

00:12:32

There we go. Good job.

00:12:34

Chatgpt went to Moneypuck. It's Moneypuck also.

00:12:37

Moneypuck, actually, right now has them at 41. 9 %. The Athletic, I think at the start of this week or last week, maybe had them up to 72. That was the best their chances have been so far this year. I'm not sure where the athletics odds stand, but 41. 9% for the Panthers. These last two games have basically buried them because it's been four-point nights for the Sabers and the Bruins and the Panthers each of these nights. So they're going to have to get hot. And also, like I said, these teams are going to have to get cold, but they're not going to be able to get hot if every single night it seems like a new guy is out of the lineup. You get a little healthier. K'chuck comes back, Marcian comes back, and then Lundell goes out of the lineup. Obviously, Seth Jones has now been out of the lineup and will be out of the lineup until at least after the Olympics. Brad Marshan leaves the game last night in the third period after he missed eight games. So you can only survive so much. I know that people say, Well, the Lightning have had injury issues, too, and they're still playing great hockey, but it doesn't feel like it's been quite to the extent that the Panthers have had.

00:13:40

I think they've averaged five and a half players out of every game this season. It's insane. And also to boot, the Panthers aren't getting good enough goal-tending. The Lightning have Andre Vatsylevski, who's playing at a very high level this year, and Tarasov is playing well for a backup, but Bob has really struggled this year, and that hasn't helped when it comes to the injuries. But you can also put it into context of there's not a lot of structure in front of him right now because these lines are bouncing around all over the place. I know I'm ranting, but last night, you have a line of Greeter and Sam Miskiewicz I forget who else was on the line with them. The third-line center, oh, my God. Luster Reinen and Greeter, and I can't even remember. Oh, Schwint was the guy. It's like these lines are shuffling all the time. Lines in a blender. Yeah. My mind's in a blender, too, guys. I'm in a very bad place. I don't think the Panthers are going to make the playoffs, and this is really the first time this year. I said it before. Here we go. No, this is the first time this year that I've really thought.

00:14:41

It's bleak right now. Eight points with 30 games, and everybody else is playing hot. I'm telling you, they got to get back to within four at the break.

00:14:51

All right, so we're looking at milestone markers, right? We have Thanksgiving, we have Christmas and New Year's. Now we got the Olympics, and we're going to trade deadline. Those are the four spots going up until the end of the season that we have to look at and where we are. I say we as if I'm a part of the team, but the Royal We as a league, where we are in the standings, that's what we got to look forward to. Now the Olympics is coming up. That means rest for a third of the team because the other two-thirds of this team is going to Milan. But rest for this league. We'll see what's going to happen after the Olympics and where things go going up into the trade deadline.

00:15:30

Yeah. I mean, look, to Ethan's point, it's become a little bit more difficult situation. But the way that the season has gone just with so many teams tightly packed together in a payoff race, it's been ebbs and flows. I don't think we can count on Boston and Buffalo and Detroit and all these teams that are above Florida continuing to play at this level, the way Tampa has just been lights out. And you know what? If they do, then that's the season and it has. And then when we get back and it's around the Trade Dead line, then Bill Zito can plan for the future in a different way. But I am not counting the Panthers team out. I think that they are going to continue to start building momentum as they get healthier, assuming that they don't keep getting decimated by injuries. The time off is certainly going to help in that regard. But, Ethan, I get where you're coming from. It's getting late early, I guess, would be the phrase.

00:16:13

But it's not late early anymore, Dave. It's late with 30 games left in the season, two-thirds of the way through the season now. That's the only thing. Yes, of course. If we were eight points out and it was December, because, of course, there's no big games in December, but there's big games in January when you're eight points out of the playoff spot. It's getting late fast, I would say, at this point. It's not getting late early anymore. It's getting late fast. It's late now, boys.

00:16:42

It's like tie for breaker, blah, blah, blah.

00:16:44

But there's two games in hand, Roy. It's not six points with three games in hand. It's eight points with one or two games in hand. It's bleak. But look, if anybody can do it, it's the Florida Panthers, right? If anybody can I believe in this team's ability to do it, especially if Seth Jones comes back after the Olympics, depending on when Dmitri Kulikov, Johnny Gajevich. There's a lot of guys to get back, but also there's no guarantee that guys won't continue to be in and out of the lineup like they have been for the last two months or so.

00:17:16

All right, it's time for Puck Look brought to you by DrapKings. Drapkings, the Crown is yours. David, please.

00:17:22

Please. Well, look, we're a little limited this week because there's only one game tonight, but I was able to dissect some value. We're going to do some alternate lines, and I always have a good feeling, but I have a good feeling about this one. It's Chicago against Columbus. The Blackhawks are hosting the Blue Jackets. We're going to go three shot props, all to go over two and a half. We're going to take Conor Bedard, who's hit this number in nine of his past 10, and Columbus also gives up the second most shots in the lead. On Columbus, we're going to take Adam Fantilly and Kiril Marshanco to go over two and a half shots. Fantilly is hit in seven of eight. Marshanco is hit in 10 of twelve. And Chicago allows the seventh most shots in the lead. Goal-wise, we're going to take Columbus to score over two and a half goals. They've scored four plus in five of their past seven, and Chicago was allowed four plus in three straight. Then we're also going to take the Blackhawks on the money line. For some reason, I don't have the odds in front of me.

00:18:13

I send them to Ethan. I think it's plus 622, something like that. But this is a good one. I feel like taking the alternate lines, we can actually dissect a little bit of value tonight.

00:18:22

All right, so there you go. Maybe we'll win money this time. It is time for Rosa in Un Minuto. Rosie.

00:18:28

Okay, first, I want to tell you guys why I'm wearing this. You don't care, but my eyes are very puffy, so don't blame me about things. Come on.

00:18:38

I'm not blaming you for anything.

00:18:40

Okay.. All right, that was Rosa in a minuto.

00:19:43

And now it's time for Rose in a minute. Go ahead, Rose. Okay.

00:19:45

Let me give it to you, voice, since you don't understand Spanish. Hey, kids. This is one minute of Hucking with Rose, and this time we're heading to Philadelphia, where the flyers decided to suffer altogether. The week started terribly. Four-zero loss to the Islanders, and Ila working, handing them a shout out like it was Christmas, and it was not Christmas. But we had scored twice, and the Flyers didn't even tickle them. The fans beg, At least one, please. Spoiler. It didn't happen. They came the most unfair game of all. Travis Goneski dropped a hat-trick against Columbus, and they still lost 5-3. I mean, score three goals, and it's seen as enough pure pain. And just in case that wasn't enough, Boston said, Let me help you, 6-3 loss to the Bruins. Another long night for Philly. So the Flyers fish in a week. Three losses. A lot of effort, zero rewards, and kinetic wondering what else has to do. Up next, the Kings, because clearly this week wasn't enough punishment. The Flyers took off, but this week, they crashed. This was one minute of hockey with Rose, your weekly recap of park passion and a little bit of chaos.

00:20:49

Next week's team.

00:20:50

I like that Gino was dancing like Dan Lovetard there with the headsets on his eyes for no apparent reason. That was great. Ethan.

00:20:57

Next week's team, get a good run rummage in here, boys.

00:21:01

Good rummage. I like rummaging.

00:21:04

Yeah. Next week's team, the Carolina Hurricanes. Okay.

00:21:08

The Carolina Hurricanes. I hope that's better. Ladies and gentlemen, the Metropolitan division there. Okay.

00:21:14

All right.

00:21:15

Good luck with that, Rosie. It's time for Wins and Fails. All right, David, what you got?

00:21:20

All right. My win of the week happened earlier when the Oilers were hosting Anaheim. Something happened to Oilers' goal tender, Tristan Jari, that we see fairly often with other NHL players, maybe not so much with the goalies. While sliding from his right to his left, his heel hit the post and knocked off the blade of his skate. And then he had to go and try to make a save with absolutely no traction. For anybody that's seen this happen in players, you can see it's impossible to skate without a skate blade. For a goalie to do it, goalies rely so much on their edges. It's pretty ridiculous to see that not only did he make a save, he's diving across the trees, but he can't move. So this is the big win on Tristan Jari, obviously having a A little bit of fun in Edmondson these days, but that's so hard. I felt for him, so that's a major win that he was able to keep that buck out of the net.

00:22:05

All right. Mcclan Celabrini is good.

00:22:08

Yes, because he's very good.

00:22:09

He's very good. How good is he?

00:22:10

Very good. How good is he, Roy?

00:22:12

Insanely good. You know how good he is? He is good enough to win a face-off without actually using the blade of his stick. All right. So they're in a face-off against Teddy Blueger in the Vancouver Knux. He was in a face-off circle, and the sticks got tied up together. So he decided to flip his stick and used the knob, the butt end of his stick, to draw the face off back in his own defensive zone. That, my friends, is a win from a guy who's really making a lot of noise for the Heart Trophy discussion.

00:22:45

I'm looking forward to putting him on my ballot.

00:22:47

There you go. I'm looking forward to voting.

00:22:49

I'm really afraid of what the NHL media is going to do to Maclin Cilibrini in terms of just anointing him as the next Sydney Crosby and what that will do for my and Roy's perception of Maclin Cilibrini.

00:23:01

It will make me happy.

00:23:02

Very scary about it.

00:23:04

Rosie, what is your win? My win of the week goes to the Thunder Bug. He actually went scuba diving, and you can see the picture there. Oh, Thunder Bug. I don't know how he did not drown or chalk there, but he went for the thing. So good job, Lightning. I love it.

00:23:20

Ethan, what's your win?

00:23:21

Patty Cain, boys. We need to celebrate this legend. One of my favorite players growing up, one of the guys that got me into the sport of hockey, those Blackhawks were so much fun when I was first getting into the sport around 2010. He became the all-time leader in points by a US-born skater last night with his 1,375. Patty Cain, an absolute legend of the game, arguably the greatest US hockey player ever. Wish we were getting another look at him in the Olympics coming up, but he is an absolute legend, and great for him to accomplish that feat.

00:23:56

All right, let's go to Phil now. David, what's your feel?

00:23:58

For my fail, we're to the ECHL, the main mariners, but we're not talking about a player on their team. No, we're actually going to be talking about the mariner's director of marketing, Katherine Horrigan, who was swept away by the pregame, the pregame gear, I guess, the pregame show crop that they were using was being pulled off the ice. She was standing behind the net and it just whisked her right off her feet. And to her credit, she stuck the landing. She actually waved to the goal tender, the mariner's goal tender. She was being shimmied off the ice there, but she turned a fail, I guess, into a win. So good on her. That's a win, yeah.

00:24:32

Very funny video. That is a win, bro. Not a fail.

00:24:34

And that seems like the opposite of what we were trying to do in getting fails. But yes, that is a win. I have two fails. Now, I wish we had the video for one of them, but let's start with the first fail, and that's the Toronto Maple leaves, and specifically, Craig Beruvi. We showed this photo earlier this week on the big show, and he looks like shit. Apparently, there was a An accident in the weight room that caused a serious, serious gash. Now, if you're looking at me in a video, my finger is pointing right here above my left eyebrow. It curves, as Dan said, a parabola. It curves. It's a cul-de-sac. It's the arch in St. Louis. And went to his other eyebrow. So it went from his eyebrow up to the top of his forehead, down to his other eyebrow, and he has a black eye. It is terrible. He looks terrible. And he was able to coach, and the Mapleies are losing. Fail number- Anthony Davis scar. Yes. He has one eyebrow now. The second fail for me, the New York Rangers. The New York Rangers, apparently, took three penalties on the same shift.

00:25:56

Now, I'm going to go over to this computer so I can read what the penalties were. Sam Kerrack tripped Kyle McClane. Sam Kerrack cross-checked Matthew Balzal. This is against the Outletters, by the way. And Matt Rimpey boarded Mark Gotcom. So that was all in the same shift, all Three separate penalties on the same shift. That is very, very hard to do, especially without the other team getting a penalty.

00:26:22

So it's a five on two power play?

00:26:25

No, I don't think that's how it works. Five on three, and then one goes out, and that starts That's the next power play. I believe that's how that roll works. I'm not an expert on that.

00:26:34

I was told there would be no math today.

00:26:35

Yeah, there's nothing I hate more than math. Either what, you lost. Oh, you failed.

00:26:38

My fail of the week is also the rangers, Troy. That was my fail of the week as well. Yeah, that's The easiest fail of the week of all time to take three penalties, two on the same guy. Then, of course, at the very, very end, who else would it be but Matt Rempe throwing an absolute elbow into the back of a guy's head, boarding him and giving just a completely unnecessary Very play. The only thing the guy does is go out there and be tall and hit people. The Rangers, in general, have been a fail this year. We can talk about this real quick. We have some time left, but they have been a disaster. They're the only team that's, and we will get to Rosie's fail, they're the only team that's completely out of it in the East. They're like 10 points behind every other team in the Eastern Conference. Just a nightmare season up at Madison Square Garden.

00:27:24

Matt Rimpey is big for nothing.

00:27:26

Correct.

00:27:27

He's big for nothing. He goes out there, he's throwing his elbows, and that's probably the reason why he's getting in trouble so much, because his elbow is... When he stands, it's right here. His head level. You just saw in the video, my elbow was up to David's face. That's basically, if I was five inches taller. That probably would be Matt Rimpey. But yeah, he's big and he can't fight either.

00:27:51

That's the other problem. Not good at anything. Not good at hitting people, not good at fighting people, not good at skating, not good at scoring, not good at defense, not good at passing, not good at offense. He He's only good at being tall, and he's not even good at that because he can barely even stand up on skates. I feel bad. I feel bad. He seems like a nice guy. Rose has a fail of the week, by the way. I thought she didn't.

00:28:10

Before we get the Rose fail of the week, let's just go to Rose's fail of the week because we're not having time to talk.

00:28:19

Actually, it's also the Rangers, but it has another... You're going to look at it another way. I'm sad because the crisis and they're spiraling. And Gatti Masaradzo and Joey Currie They are fans of the Rangers. So if they don't go to the play, there's maybe no way we can talk to them. So that's my fail of the week. You can keep talking about the Rangers. Anyway, you have one minute.

00:28:40

My fail of the week is we are not able to talk to actors on Stranger Things. Is that why I'm here?

00:28:47

Yeah, because they're rangers fans. We need the rangers to succeed. We need the rangers to succeed.

00:28:52

We did see Gaten Mata Zahro at the Winter Classic. We saw him.

00:28:57

Well, you saw him. I saw him in the press box with Dave.

00:28:59

You We have one minute to talk more rangers.

00:29:03

Do we even want to talk about the rangers for another minute?

00:29:05

Can we give a preemptive win to where we are right now because of how amazing the league did at the Winter Classic? No, because Tampa doesn't deserve any credit for anything.

00:29:15

They do.

00:29:16

Oh, let's know. This is a state of hockey, Ethan.

00:29:18

We're all in this together right now. Okay, so that's what we're going to lean into is that we're all in this together because Tampa fans really to seem to be all in this together with the Florida Panthers. We could use a little together.

00:29:27

We could use a little together.

00:29:28

Thank you, everybody. Roy is going to tell us where you can find us.

00:29:30

00:30:00

Guys, let me tell you something. One of the greatest joys of my life was when they finally opened a White Castle in my neighborhood in Phoenix, Arizona. I lost my mind because I'm so used to eating White Castle at home when I was in New York. Now I can have it all the time. I'm in Phoenix. But when I come to Miami, there's no White Castle. You know what I do? Go to the freezer aisle because right there, they got the variety pack with all the great White Castle flavor in there. You're getting a lot of Slider styles. You're getting classic American cheese, you're getting jalapeno cheese. If you're a bacon lover, you're that new Chetter Bacon Cheese Sliders. The classic cheese gives you all the taste of a great American burger, while jalapeno cheese sliders give us a serving of spicy to each bite. The new Chetter Bacon Cheese, that literally brings home the bacon, folks, with real pieces of bacon in Chedder-flaved cheese. Guys, I know what you're thinking. Your mouth is water. My mouth is watering just reading this. That's completely normal. You can find each of these sliders where?

00:30:57

In the grocery store, in the freezer aisle.

Deandra Lou joins us here. She writes for the Hockey News, and she's the beat writer for the Tampa Bay Lightning. This is the Lightning second outdoor game. They beat the of the 3-2 in a 2022 Stadium Series in Nashville. That was in front of a lot of people. That was like 69,000 fans at Nissan Stadium. I'm completely surprised you didn't say nice.

00:33:43

Caught me a little off guard there. You know what? That's a fail on my part. I apologize to everybody watching. I feel like now I could just walk away in shame.

00:33:50

No, we need you here. The Tampa Bay Lightning up in the Boston Bruins. For the past 25 years, they've been a premier franchise in the NHL, especially since they started winning. Talk about the Lightning and how they changed the aspect of hockey in Florida throughout the league.

00:34:13

Yeah, well, I think It goes back to probably when John Cooper got hired. I think we can track the stats on that. Turned things around here in Tampa and kicked off what we see that hockey is here in the state of Florida. You guys know you're down in South Florida with the success of the Panthers. But the Lightning have been... I think they're an organization that has always done it right. They didn't try to skip steps and slowly built towards it. Got two Stanley Cups, went to another Stanley Cup final, wasn't the result they wanted, and now they've been building back to it. I think it's an organization that does things the right way, pretty much is the best way that I can describe it.

00:34:54

Tampa has been on a hell of a run over the last month, month and a half despite missing a lot of players. They've missed forwards, Braden Point has been out. They've missed half their defensemen, it feels like. How are they so good this year? How have they been able to maintain and be such a dominant force in the East when they've been almost as injured as the Panthers, some might argue?

00:35:10

It's crazy because it's like they're key players. It's not just depth guys. It's Victor Headman, Ryan McDonald. They were without Eric Turnac for a while on the blue line. So the blue line has really taken a hit. Then you talk about Braden Point, Vasi, all those guys. I think the biggest thing with them is they've been able to call up guys from their AHL team and rely on them, and they run a similar system. Everything is copy and paste, and there's really good communication. So they've been able to just call these guys up, and they've been waiting for their chance to play up here. So they're all competing for a spot, and it's worked out really well. They got a guy, Dominic James, who was a draft pick for the Blackhawks, is a six-round guy, and he's having a great rookie year. Then De Steu, who we talked about before this, he's an undrafted guy. The lighting have always been really good at finding. They don't always go for the shiny object. They're going for the guys. They go over to Europe and scout over there, and then it's worked out really well for them.

00:36:03

John Cooper has yet to win a Jack Adams Trophy for Coach of the Year. Why?

00:36:10

That's a great question. Great question. I've been getting asked that a But I think that everyone is so used to the lightning, having success, like what you talked about. They've set the standard. They've been good for so long, and people underestimate what John Cooper does. It's hard to stay good and competitive. And this year, the injuries have been... It's a revolving door of injuries. So one guy comes back, two guys are out. What he's had to do, and it also goes back to the culture, everyone talks about John Cooper and the culture that he's built. But doing that is constant work. It's good coaching, and I don't know why he has not been considered. And even this year, I don't know if you guys saw it, they're showing the votes and where he's at and he's not even... There's no first-place votes for John Cooper. So we'll see. I think he could have won it. Maybe his first year coaching, honestly, he could have won a couple of times. We'll see. This could be his year. But think about having a competitive Lightning team, coaching the Olympics, and maybe winning the Jack Adams. That's a pretty big season.

00:37:11

We have a little bit of understanding of having all that success and not necessarily winning an award for Bill Zito, who's been the GM of the Forever for a while now. One of the things I like most about John Cooper, he's been around him a lot the last few years, obviously, with the Panthers. He was at Four Nations last year. He's just such a down-to-earth, even-keel guy. No matter what's going around the lightning, no matter how high the team is or how low they might be. He always just seems to keep the same demeanor, and he's such a player's coach. He doesn't take out any of his guys in the media. It just must be really nice as we have Paul Maurice down in Florida, but it just must be fun to have a coach like that that you know you can work with and that you know he's going to treat you like just one of them.

00:37:47

I think that's part of it, too. When you talk about him being in the running for the Jack Adams, that is part of it. It's the culture. It's how he does it. When you ask the guys, and I'm sure it's very similar with Paul Maurice, although I've seen him on the bench, he can get a little feisty. So can Coup, though. But with the guys, they talk about that. It doesn't matter if they lose. He stays the exact same, even keel guy that he would be if they won. So there's not a lot of highs and lows. It's just he builds confidence in them. And I think that that is so much, especially when you talk about these young guys that are coming in. These guys have had to step up for Victor Headman and Ryan McDonald. They have a lot of confidence. They know what to expect. The culture is already set. And all of that goes back to John Cooper, all of They haven't really lost a step since they lost them.

00:38:35

But Stephen Stamkos, in that drama that happened before he went to Nashville, talk about the time that happened and what exactly was the disconnect there.

00:38:45

Yeah, it's crazy because it's been a minute since Stamkos has played for the lightning. I think that... It's hard to say now. I think in a couple of years, everyone will be able to look back and have answers on that. When you talk about, and I don't know if you'll see this with the Panthers, but you go to three Stanley Cup finals, and then there was a flat cap, right? And so there was a lot that had to happen. They were losing players, and they were trying to work around that. And it was a rough year. His last year here was a pretty rough year. They were trying to build back defensively. And so I think that that reflected in some of his game and his play and just the team overall that year. So it's hard for me to say, honestly, the disconnect between what happened with the organization and Stamco. But I know that they definitely miss him. They're looking for someone to fill that spot in the power place still to this day, and it's improving, obviously, this season. They're playing pretty well. But he's one of those guys to me. He's always the guy that you can't really put a number on.

00:39:47

Certain guys just bring so much to the room and so much to the team and the organization. To me, you couldn't put a number on it. That's just how I always viewed it.

00:39:56

Still to this day, one of my favorite commercials of all time is him and Headman standing there the little kids playing hockey and made me start good time to start saving for college. But you talked about Stamkos' role with the Lightning and how he was a power play killer. And us coming from a Panthers' perspective, obviously, we know that all too well. But if they're looking for a guy to fill that role. I know somebody who's out there who's available, who has been linked to the Lightning, maybe one of many teams is Artemi Panarin. Is that something that you can maybe see happening down here to fill that role? Is there a spot for him? Could they make room for him? Is that something that could potentially happen?

00:40:30

It's hard for me. I've seen the same thing. It's hard for me to imagine a player like Panarin coming in. One, from a cap perspective, I don't know how that happens. He carries a pretty heavy cap hit that I have not seen the lightning really take on. I guess Jake Gensel was the most recent guy. And you know, because you cover a Florida team, we don't see those numbers, really. But anyways, they have a lot of scores already. Scoring is not really, I don't think, what they'll be looking for. I think it's more where they want a good two-way player and also face offs are an area that they really need some help on. But that is a heavy cap hit. I personally don't see that happening. But usually what it is, in my experience with Julian Breaseball, is where you hear the most noise. When he says to look left, you want to look right. That's my rule of thumb. We'll see what happens. I do think they're going to make a move or two. They have a lot of guys, like we talked about on the blue line, they've got an excess amount of guys.

00:41:25

I think that's probably where the moves are going to be.

00:41:27

What would you say is the difference between Steve Iserman and Julian Vriesvall and how they handled the team when they were GMs, respectively?

00:41:34

That's an interesting question. That's a really good question. Well, I think Julian learned from Steve Iserman. I think the thing about Julian Vriesvall is everyone talks about how he's almost like a stoic guy, but actually around the players, you get to know him, and he is actually a really cool... He's a really cool guy. I can't really speak too much on Steve Izerman, but obviously, he learned from Steve Izerman. I think Julian keeps everything really close to the chest. You're never going to know. No one's ever going to be able to figure. I don't think anyone's really been able to figure out any of his moves leading up to the trade deadline so far. But yeah, I don't know. That's a good That's a good question. I think with Julian, he is really aggressive and he's not scared. You talk about the Stamkos move. I mean, that could shake an organization in the wrong direction. They took it the other way and went with it, and it's been really successful. But if you would have said Julian Bresouah is going to say goodbye to Steven Stamkos, I don't think anyone would have believed you. I think the biggest thing is he's just not scared to be aggressive.

00:42:37

It's just funny. As I'm hearing you talk about Bresouah and then talking about John Cooper and just the way that they've built such a dominant franchise here, It's been similar to what they've done in South Florida with Bill Zito and Paul Maurice. Bill Zito learning from Jarmo Kekeleinen in Columbus, whereas Bresouh learned from Steve Iserman here. Just to see that how it's all come together here in Florida as a Florida native, us like me grew up watching hockey I hear it. I just love hearing people talk about how awesome it is to see that this has basically become the state of hockey. Sorry, guys. I know it sucks, but six straight Stanley Cup finals have come through here. Florida is the state of hockey, isn't it, Dee?

00:43:11

Yeah. I feel like the biggest thing that I don't see people talking about enough is just the culture of the two teams. It's a totally different culture. Yes, you can talk about the weather, you can talk about the taxes, but really, when you talk about the coaches and how they interact with their players, you talk about John Cooper being a players' coach. There's no It's not toxic, it's not unhealthy. The players feel comfortable. I know Brandon Hagle, I talked to him the other day, and he said he would feel comfortable going up to Julian Breaseball and asking him a question. He's not intimidated. He could go up to John Cooper. Anyone in the organization, everyone's on the same page. I feel like the Panthers are the exact same way. So there's something to be said. I think some teams could take notes from what they're doing here in Florida. And I feel like this is another big year for the Florida hockey teams. The lightning are crushing it, so we could see two Florida teams in the playoffs again.

00:44:04

Let's talk about the vibe around the city for this event, Stadium Series right now. How's it looking, especially considering that the Gasparilla parade is on Saturday. So these two events are commingling.

00:44:18

Yeah, well, there's definitely a buzz in the city. And I think when I was here this week at the stadium, a lot of people from the league were talking about that. They're just going around and they can tell that people are really excited about the game. The fact that it is on the same weekend of Gasparilla. It's going to be a long shift for everybody, Saturday and Sunday. I think everyone's just going to have a couple hours of sleep, wake up and make their way to the stadium. The weather is cooperating, which I think is amazing because you really never know what you're going to get in Florida. I personally was a little nervous. I'm sure you guys were for your game, too. It was like, Is the ice going to melt? So we're going to have water to skate on. But the weather is cooperating and the city is really excited. And this has been a long time coming for Tampa. Honestly, they talk about the lightning being as good as they have been for so long, over a decade. It's a long time coming for us.

00:45:08

Yeah, they've been trying to get an outdoor game here in Tampa for a long time. To see it coming to fruition and the way that they've done it, right behind us, they have this massive tent structure that they built just so they get the ice build coming up. It's been pretty amazing. But you mentioned Gasparilla happening this weekend, which for those of you who are outside of Florida, who are from outside of Florida, it's a huge deal for people from this area. It's very pirate friendly. Roy and I are going out tomorrow hoping to take some of that in. But what do you think we can expect as we meander our way around the Gasparela events tomorrow that you're sending us up for? What are we going to see? Are people going to be literally Jack Sparrowing talking to us?

00:45:46

Correct. Yes.

00:45:47

You're going to wake up in the morning.

00:45:49

I've warned some people, some family friends that are coming to town. I'm like, You're going to wake up in the morning. You're going to go get coffee. You're going to think you're just getting coffee to prepare for your day. You're going to see grown adults dressed as Jack Sparrow talking to you in pirate talk. I mean, that's the level. Actually, last week, I was driving past Hattrick's, which is a great hockey bar, by the way, in Tampa. It's a great hockey bar. I was driving past there, and there were two pirates just casually walking down the sidewalk. And that was a week ago. At the Lightning Game last night, they had the ice crew. They were dressed as pirates. They had all the players, the graphics of them as pirates. So it's a really good time. Use your imagination with it. You're going to see a lot of things. But I think you guys are going to have so much fun.

00:46:31

Yeah, we're all going to have fun. It's going to be a fun weekend. Stadium Series here in Tampa, Deandra Lou from the Hockey News covering the Tampa Bay Lightning. Thank you for joining us.

Episode description

Roy and David are in Tampa, coming to us from Raymond James Stadium, where they are situated for Sunday's Stadium Series game between the Tampa Bay Lightning and Boston Bruins. The boys set the scene for us before jumping into updates to the league's discipline process. Then, it's time to take a step into the Panthers' Den, where Ethan is feeling very dejected after two brutal losses this week for the Florida Panthers, who now find themselves eight points out of a playoff spot with 30 games to go. Rosa En Un Minuto takes us to Philly before the gang dives into their wins and fails of the week, which highlights the rotten year the New York Rangers are having. This week's guest is Diandra Loux, who covers the Lightning for The Hockey News, and Roy and David speak with her about the Stadium Series and the great season the Bolts are having so far this year.
