The conference finals have started, but Rose wants to talk about off-campus. This is The Hockey Show.
Oh yeah.
With David Druick of The Hockey News at home because he's stuffy, Ethan and Rose is in the studio with me. This is The Hockey Show. I'm Roy Bellamy. The Eastern Conference Final get underway. Last night, and it was rather surprising because the Canadiens, as, uh, Jonathan Zaslow likes to say, took that ass. Uh, they defeated the Carolina Hurricanes. Uh, definitely looked like it was more than just, uh, rink rust. I mean, they were off for a while, uh, but that first period, scoring 33 seconds in was Carolina, but then 4 unanswered goals the defense looked terrible. They gave up multiple breakaway goals. Yoïs Slavkovski with a beautiful goal in the third. It was just about as bad of a game as the Hurricanes have played all season. What did you see in that game, David?
Interestingly, when you dig a little bit deeper, it wasn't as bad as the score would indicate and the chances would indicate.
Oh no, they look terrible, Dave. They look bad.
I, I just, I'm, when I dove into the analytics this morning after, you know, going through the game last night, I was actually kind of surprised to see Carolina was like really fairly dominant in a lot of the possession areas. Uh, the first period was a little bit more even, like possessionally Carolina still had the edge, but it was a little bit more even. Scoring chances were pretty even between the two, but as the game went on, uh, it was really Carolina until the third period when Montreal finally was able to dig their heels in a little bit and limit some of the chances even though Carolina had the puck. Uh, But similarly to what we saw in Game 1 between the Avalanche and Vegas, I think it kind of sets us up for what could be a really exciting series just because the favorite, the teams that we all thought were going to kind of have a really easy, not easy, but you know, that we thought were going to come out of it, they both struggled a bit. And now we're set up, you know, the road teams already won in both series.
So it hopefully means that we're going to get long series for both. But I think when looking, when digging around with the way that the analytics were for this game, Carolina wasn't quite as bad as we thought.
Well, specifically, I'm talking about the transition defense because the rushes for Montreal looked pretty dominant. And yeah, those multiple breakaway goals. Ethan, what did you see in this game?
I saw what I usually see from the Carolina Hurricanes in the conference final, Roy. I saw that the analytics judged them out as being the better team. And then you watch the game and they were thoroughly dominated by the Montreal Canadiens. They had a good spell in the second period. They were the better team in the second period. They got the lone goal in the second period. But once the Canadiens escaped with a 2-goal lead from that flurry, it just felt like that was it for the, for the Canes. And they didn't really have anything for them in the third period. This is what we're used to with the Carolina Hurricanes. They run through the, the Metropolitan Division and then they get to the Atlantic Division and they face a sturdy opponent in the Eastern Conference Final and their game kind of doesn't match up and the The Montreal style was a great counter to the Carolina style. They beat them on breakouts. They scored, what, 2 or 3 breakaway goals. Slavkovsky beat them in one-on-one skill. Like, we're seeing that skill that overwhelms Carolina, who doesn't have that high-end superstar, that game-breaking type player, right?
Montreal has a couple of them. Demidov had a great moment last night. Slavkovsky, like I mentioned, had that tremendous goal in the third period that we'll see later on. And Caulfield had a big moment as well. Their, their breakout defense was terrible in that first period. They gave up 4 goals on breakouts in this game. Their defense was not good, and it was because a lot of— they were forcing, you know, all their guys were coming towards the puck because they play that aggressive style of defense. It was leaving a guy open, and Montreal was able to find the guy in behind and score. So look, I do agree Carolina is better than what we saw last night. There's no doubt about that, but but if you're a Carolina fan, are you not saying to yourself, here we go again? Like they, they get to the Eastern Conference Final and they get waxed. And I understand that the story will be that it was because of rust, but that looked to me like the same game that the Panthers played against the Carolina Hurricanes 4 times in the Eastern Conference Final last year on their way to a gentleman's sweep.
So I think it's more than just rust that went into it. The Canadiens had a great game plan. They limited Carolina to just 25 shots. It's not like Carolina put up one of these giant shot totals. And the biggest thing they did, Roy, is they beat Carolina how you beat Carolina. They kept them onto the wings and they were just throwing empty-calorie shots on net and, and they weren't even getting to the net most of the time. Montreal won 30-12 in the shots blocked department. That can be the key in this series, is just not even letting the puck get to the net because they're forcing Carolina to the edges and it's much harder to get pucks on net if they're on the edges rather than playing from right in front of the net.
It's how Vegas beat Colorado the night before. They got in the shooting lanes and they blocked shots. Dave, where do you see Carolina adjusting in this series?
Well, I think first off, it's got to start with what you mentioned, Roy, and that's their transition defense. It's where they struggled the most. It's where Montreal generated the most, their most opportunities. So I think right straight away it would be trying to limit what Montreal can do, can do whenever, whether it's turning the puck over, whether it's coming out of their own zone. Otherwise, I think, you know, as Rod Burnham said, it's one of those games where you just kind of have to throw it away. There are going to be some things they can build on, but the highlights of the game all were Montreal. So I would think that we're going to see Carolina bounce back in Game 2. But, you know, kind of what Ethan was talking about, what are they like? 0-11 or 0-17?
They're 0-7 in Game 1s in the Eastern Conference Final in franchise history. And they're 1-17 in their last 18 Eastern Conference Finals games since 2009.
Yeah, that has me excited for Game 2 because if That has to be weighing on Carolina. They're going to get asked about that for the next 2 days. That's going to be a big topic. So you would think that going into it, that's going to be something on their minds, whether they want to admit it or not. Uh, certainly going to be on Rod's mind because he's been there for all of that. Uh, so yeah, no, now I'm just more excited for Game 2 because if Montreal comes out and somehow wins Game 2, how is that series not basically over at this point? Like, you— the way that they've been playing combined with Carolina's struggles at this point of the season, like, Carolina's got to win Game 2.
I think it's really dangerous if you're RBA if you say that's a burn the tape game because there is so much that they have to learn from in that game. You can't just say that we'll show up in Game 2 and we'll be better, or if we play the same way in Game 2 that, you know, a bounce goes this way and a bounce goes that way, we'll win. Like, Carolina has to change something because if they show up and play the same game that they did in Game 1, they will get burned in Game 2 and all of a sudden things get really frisky if they're going back to, uh, Center Bell Oh, I almost said Bell Center.
You see, because you know that's correct.
I said the proper name though. If they go back to Center Bell down 0-2, I agree with Dave. Like, you're looking— and the demons start whirring up if you're Carolina, right? Like, you start to see the Ghost of Christmas Past. And I would not— that barn was nervous last night. It got quiet fast. I would not want to be a Carolina fan if I go down 0-2. I don't want to be a Carolina fan.
If I'm Montreal, you know what I do for Game 3? I bring in like Matthew Tkachuk, or I bring in somebody that's had a part in Carolina's conference final dismay over the last, you know, decade, whatever it's been. I'd bring in some of those guys and that's our special guest tonight. Here's Sam Bennett, you know, something like that just to get in their heads a little bit more.
You called Rod Brind'Amour RBA. Is that a situation where if It— I mean, you do it if there's a hyphen in his name, but that's an apostrophe, Ethan. Does anybody else call him RBA?
I think that's kind of how he's widely known, is it not? RBA? I feel like people refer to him as RBA. Roddy. Roddy the Body, right? Or Rod the Bod. Rod the Bod.
Yeah.
Roy, there's going to be a lot of questions asked if they go on and lose this series in 4 or 5, which— let's just slow down a little bit. Same thing with Vegas and Colorado, right? There's still 2 really good teams that we're dealing with here. Um, but if they go on and lose in a similar way to the way they have the last 4 times they've been to the Eastern Conference Finals, there's going to be a lot of questions to ask in Carolina about Rod Brind'Amour this offseason.
So Montreal season ended— uh, I'm sorry, the Buffalo Sabers season ended because they lost to the Montreal Canadiens. And Buffalo, immediately after the series ended, extended Lindy Ruff's contract. That was well deserved for him. As we talk about the Canadiens moving on to the second round, They got there because Alex Tuch did nothing, literally did nothing, not a single solitary point in that series. After, after coming off a pretty good series against Boston, he was a -10 against the Montreal Canadiens, and he's going into the offseason as a free agent. So his agent says that his performance, his poor performance in that series, won't affect his market value and I believe Buffalo wants him back. But does that performance affect the number that Buffalo offers him coming up once they start continuing the negotiation, David?
I don't think so. I think when you're looking big picture, he was such a big part of their success this season. And really, he's been such a great, like, Buffalo Saber since he came over from Vegas. Like, I just think that you've got to keep him in town. Keep that locker room together. Like, if anything, it would put a chip on his shoulder the way he played against Montreal in that series. Like, that was rough. He's been their heart and soul now, so I'd be really surprised if they let him go to free agency and they let him test the waters.
One thing I will say about Tuch is he can get paid if he goes to free agency because the free agency class this year is weak, and he will probably be the top name on the market. And if he's not on the market, if Buffalo extends him, then this free agency class, it looks even uglier than it already does. So if he wants to cash in, then he should absolutely go to market. But if he wants to remain, you know, he's a Buffalo guy. He's a—
he grew up in Syracuse. So he's upstate New York. That's his territory.
Yeah.
And he grew up a Sabers fan. And when he came in, came over in the Jack Eichel trade, that was huge for him. It's been a huge part of that rebuild. And he did— we can't forget he did have a great series against Boston. He was arguably their best player against Boston, but for whatever reason, he just couldn't get going against Montreal. But it's definitely going to affect his number, I would say. I think that, that performance—
and he—
I thought he played well in Game 7, but he just couldn't get on the board. It was fascinating to watch.
Rosie, you have something on the playoffs?
Yeah, I think, uh, when you have 11 days, uh, to rest, you lose that momentum, and you cannot lose momentum because I'm gonna give you an example. When I start watching a show and I binge watch and I stop for a week, then I forget who the character is. So I think they need not to rest, they need the momentum. So that's what happened to Carolina. Like 11 days, they forgot that they were—
they forgot they were in the playoffs.
They forgot who the main characters were in the show. They forgot to cover Juraj Slavkovski and Filip Panov.
I forgot about— wow, am I here? Yes? No?
So I think those 11 days helped us because, well, we don't want Carolina to win, but it's a constant debate about whether it's rink rust or having, uh, rest going into a series as opposed to the team that just came off of Game 7 or Game 6 that has to go straight into another series. Who has, you know, who has the better options in that situation? It seems as if the underdogs did, because Vegas won.
I think when you have momentum and when you have that adrenaline and everything, you're just, let's go get another one, let's go get another one. But if you have the rest, like, you don't want to go back.
Yeah, sorry, right?
I thought the biggest place that you saw the rust factor was Freddie Anderson, who was great in the first couple rounds and was— let up 5 on 21 shots last night. Like, you could argue he was really bad last night, and like Carolina shook off the rust after the first period, right? Like the second period, they had a shift where they were in the zone for like 2 and a half minutes or something. Like there, there were plenty of flurries in that period, and they shook off the rust, and they looked more like the Carolina we came to know. That's why I continue to say that they have to be cautious about blaming it all on rust, and we have to look at what happened and say Montreal beat them in the exact way that teams have beaten Carolina in the past, and they have to learn something from it. And Look, they always say they're gonna play the way they play, so they've got to change something.
So in the West, um, what will Vegas— I'm sorry, what will Colorado have to do to, um, adapt and adjust to what Vegas just did to them in Game 1? This is for Dave tonight.
Well, thanks for setting me up there, Roy. I appreciate it.
You got it. Sorry about that. I forgot, you know, I gotta get used to you being on Zoom.
Yes. Uh, I think for— if I'm Colorado, I just want to keep doing what I did in Game 1, aside from missing the net so many times. Like, they they put so many pucks on net that game. They had so many Grade A chances that just missed on a one-timers were flying wide. If I'm Colorado, I'm actually feeling pretty good going into Game 2 thinking so much went wrong for us in that game and we still had a lot of chances. They were in the game right up until the end. They had that nice comeback in the third period that almost happened. Thankfully it didn't for our overtime streak. But no, man, I'm very pro Colorado tonight. I think they're going to come and try to blow the doors off.
You had something on Rust versus rest versus—
well, look, just going back to, you know, you guys were talking about, uh, like Carolina's rust, uh, against Montreal in Game 1, and I'm thinking it's— it just feels very similar to a year ago at this time when Carolina marched through the first 2 rounds, 5 games each time. Florida came out of the second round after that long 7-game series against Toronto and flipped right into the Eastern Conference Final where they turned around and scored 10 goals in the first 2 games in Carolina. So that— there may be something to that rust specifically with this Carolina team.
Okay, let's really quickly, since game 1 for both series have happened, who on each team could win the Conn Smythe Trophy today?
Ooh.
Demidov.
Demidov. All right, Demidov. That's one.
I mean, Montreal, it seems like there's a new candidate popping up recently. Slavkovsky, I feel like, is the name right now.
Uh, I would go maybe Dobish.
I was gonna say, yeah, he's been fantastic.
Yeah, and he was great again last night, I thought. And he's had a couple stinkers, but overall he has been tremendous for them. Uh, the other—
what about Carolina?
Logan Stankoven. He's got 7 goals, only 1 assist though. Jackson Blake and Taylor Hall lead the team in points. I'll tell you who it certainly won't be is Sebastian Aho or Seth Jarvis. 5 points each right now, 2 of Sebastian Aho's points have been empty net goals. Uh, they got to get more.
Might have been Freddie Andersen before.
Yeah, it might have been. No, absolutely, Freddie Andersen or, um, or, uh, Stankovan would be the two guys for me. You just give it to that whole Stankovan line right now. Marner is the guy if you're in Vegas. He has been the best player in the playoffs. And in, in Colorado, I mean, you could give it to any number of guys, but I guess it would just be Nathan MacKinnon by default, wouldn't it? Or at this point, after— if Kale McCarr comes back into the lineup and then they go on a run here and win the rest of the series, like, you gotta give it to McCarr, right?
Not either one of the goaltenders.
Does Nazem Kadri get a nod? Because he's been pretty lights out too.
Uh, not, not, no, not for me in that West series. I think Marner has been so far and above the best player in the playoffs, Roy, that you can't give it to Hart, even though he has been great. And also, I just don't want to see Carter Hart win the Conn Smythe Trophy. Uh, but And Wedgwood and Blackwood have been on and off. So for me, if it's— like I said, Colorado, like it would just kind of be a legacy achievement award at that point to give it to McKinnon.
Dave, what about you? I agree. No, I think it's, it's kind of easy with Vegas. It's going to be Mitch Marner. I lean between Steenhoven and Anderson in Carolina. Just, I mean, Anderson probably before yesterday was the surprise. But yeah, in Colorado, I don't know, like I'd want to maybe think about some one of the nontraditional guys. That's why I threw Makar's name out there. But it's hard. It's hard to go against the norm like that. Cardinals' top guys are playing like their top guys.
Rosie?
Um, I don't, I don't know any other players, but I just want to say how you didn't tell me how many handsome players were on this roster, and I just found out about Brett Howden or whatever.
Brett Howden. How do you mess up that name?
Brett Howden actually isn't a bad shout for the cons, Mike. He leads the NHL in goals right now.
There you go. I want that guy. I saw that game and everybody was very handsome, and you guys didn't tell me. So I love this team except for The one guy that we hate, but wow, very handsome.
So Brett Howden is Rosie's pick for the Conn Smythe Trophy. It's time for Puck Luck, and it's sponsored by DraftKings. DraftKings, the crown is yours. David, what do you got? Make some money.
All right. As I said earlier, I'm really feeling the Colorado Avalanche tonight. So we're going to take Colorado on the puck line tonight. Not only are they going to win, but they're going to win by multiple goals. Before the overtime clincher against Minnesota, Colorado had won 5 straight playoff games by at least 2 goals. This is a team that's rolling right now, and I think tonight they're going to flex their avalanche muscles. Also in this game, on that note, we're going to take Carter Hart over 28.5 saves. Colorado's the most shots in the playoffs. They had 31 in Game 1, and that's why they had, what, 20 shots blocked in 80 shot attempts. Vegas has allowed 30 or more shots in 3 straight games and 5 of their last 7. And finally, we're going to take Martin Necias over 2.5 shots on goal. Pretty simple. He's hit that in 6 of 7. He's getting over 20 minutes of ice time per game for Colorado. Parlay odds 550. Feeling kind of good about this one, for whatever that's worth. So let's go make some money.
All right, it's time for Rosa in un minuto. Rosie, what do you have?
Okay, so right now I'm gonna give it to you in Spanish, but in English I have a surprise. Are you ready?
All right, that was Rosa in un minuto. Thank you very much.
Poquito caos, a little bit of chaos. Oh, they said cows.
Speaking of chaos, it is time for Rose in a Minute. Rose, take it away.
Okay, listen to this voice. This is not country. This is soccer. 4 goals in the first leg. Good night. Miss the road. Uh-huh.
Sounds like a mix of Shakira and Sounds like a World Cup song, right? Like a—
yeah, Shakira making the world— Shakira should make the World Cup song every year. Let's be very clear about that. Every 4 years.
Wow.
Losing my wallet. Some things never change.
All right, so that was Rose in a Minute.
You guys didn't enjoy it because the voice talked, but great song.
Yeah, we talked over the song. Sorry about it.
We enjoyed the song.
It's better than country, which is what you, uh, blasted in my ear during the watch-along.
Yeah, that's why I was like, you know what, I'm just gonna take it, uh, Shakira mode.
Yeah. Thanks for everybody who watched along with us. That was very nice. We are going to do this again next week Wednesday for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final.
Dun dun dun.
That will be Carolina at Montreal.
So let's get off Montreal sweep at home.
Yeah. So it could be an elimination game.
Dun dun dun.
Who knows? It's time for wins and fails. Dave, what is your win?
All right. Um, so over the past week, a couple of the Hometown Remix jerseys may or may not have leaked. Uh, we don't know for sure. Obviously nobody's confirming it. Uh, next year they're going to be doing in the NHL Hometown Remix, which I guess is kind of like an updated version of the Reverse Retros. Just another way for different jerseys, sell some more, all that cool stuff. So we saw Panthers leak and we saw an Islanders leak.
What? She asked if you liked it.
Well, I was, I was gonna get to that.
Thank you.
Sorry, I like that they're taking swings. Okay, I— the Islanders one feels like we've seen it kind of before with the fisherman, but I like that logo. I'm fine with it. The Panthers one is totally, totally off the rails, like nothing that we've seen before. Uh, it's like a highlighter color jersey, but again, unique, different, cool. And again, I'm all, I'm all for trying to stretch it out, trying to do different things with the jerseys. I'm very curious because these two are so different to see how they the rest of the league is gonna, you know, how they're gonna look when they get played out or when they get released or whatever. But, uh, a good start, a fun start. I'm in it.
Looks like bananas. Uh, yeah, I don't think that it's real. And the reason why I don't think that is real is if you look at the Panthers jersey, the logo, the crest is not big enough. It is way too small.
Also, well, I think it's a child's jersey, is that— so that's why the logos looked a little distorted for the size-wise.
Oh, and the captaincy designation. So the C on the jersey. What the hell is that? That's illegible.
A futuristic C. I don't like it.
Don't like it. Do better. My win of the week is the Professional Women's Hockey League has a new champion for the 2025-26 season. The Montreal Victoire.
Victoire.
Victoire.
They took home the Walter Cup in Game 4, 4-0 shutout of the Ottawa Charge. They won 3-1. Abby Roque scored twice and Anne-Renée Desbiens, I believe that's how you pronounce the last name, earned the shutout as the goaltender. The captain Marie-Philippe Poulin was named the, uh, the playoff MVP for, uh, 8 points in the playoffs. That was the most in the league's short history. The most as a record for most points in the playoffs. So good for Montreal as they are the new champion. They were the best team in the league all season, so good for them. Ethan, what is your win?
My win of the week comes from last night's Montreal-Carolina game. If we can roll it here, this might be the best goal of the playoffs here, guys. Your eyes, Slavkovsky. What a move around Andrei Svechnikov and then beats Freddie Andersen to the near post. Check this out again. Absolute—
oh!
Beautiful move. Like I said, this might be the goal of the playoffs so far. Yuri Slavkovsky scored 2 goals last night, 1 on the empty net, but they were his first 2 non-power play goals. If he gets rolling at 5-on-5 and that line gets rolling at 5-on-5, look out, the Canadiens are gonna be really dangerous in this series. Rosie, your win of the week.
This is my win of the week, uh, play it, play it boys.
You're gonna have to describe the video there, Rosie.
Ah, so, um, I love when people take, uh, videos and they make it funny, and they have these voices for the goalies, and they're like, 'Ah, I can do this, but you can see.' So it's a Carolina player, uh, trying to see, and the goalie from Montreal trying to—
Dobez is the goalie, by the way.
That's what it is.
Yeah, so it's a little reverse justice there.
Yeah, it's a reverse screen. That's what it is.
Yeah.
I love it.
It's all for it. Let's go. More goalie, more goalies trying to get around on players. I'm all for that.
Let's go. Yeah, that's nice. But yeah, like Sean Avery. Yeah, exactly like Sean Avery, I guess. Right. But that's a natural screen, actually. It looked like Dobris was trying to pull off a Sean Avery in that situation. Just silly. Uh, what is your Phil of the Week though, Dave?
Uh, for my Phil of the Week, we're heading to the IHF World Championships over in Switzerland for a game earlier this week between Norway and Slovenia. Uh, early in the third period, Norway was already up 2-0. Uh, Jakob Berglund went on a breakaway that was stopped by the Slovenian goaltender Zan Ous, but after he stopped it, the puck kind of sat between his legs. He reached down to cover it with his glove and somehow knocked it into his own net under his body. I've never seen a goalie score on himself in this way before. I feel terrible for Zanussi, who's actually playing a really good game right now. They're playing Canada as we speak. But yeah, that's— oh, I hate for the goalie on goalie negativity, but I'm sure he would agree with me that that's just so, so bad.
Unfortunate.
Yeah, that's not— that's, that's not good at all. My fail of the week is Sidney Crosby. Now you might be asking yourself, why, for no reason, is Roy going with Sidney Crosby as his Phil of the Week? Well, you didn't play in the second round, and, uh, you might just be a hating-ass hater. So let me tell you why I might be hating-ass hating. It's because— and this, I'm gonna— we're gonna relive this Phil in a second, but the Philadelphia Flyers had the fans go into the Xfinity Mobile Arena to paint the ice. That's what they usually do at the end of the season before, you know, the ice maintenance crew at each arena chops up the ice and gets rid of it. So what happened was somebody painted a, a body figure on the face-off dot that said— and it said, R.I.P. Bozo. This is where Sidney Crosby flop during the series against the Flyers, where Garnett Hathaway skated past them as they were getting ready for the faceoff, and just an accidental high stick as he was moving by, and then, ah, sniper got him.
I've been shot!
Down goes Sidney Crosby. So it was an opportunity for me to relive that fail once again. Ethan, what is your fail?
Uh, the Carolina Hurricanes, Roy. Yeah, 1-17 in their last 18 Eastern Conference Finals games. That is rough.
Yeah, that's it.
That's my fail.
Ethan clearly did his wins and fails.
We're kind of low on time here, Dave. Roy, that's my fail.
I've only had a whole week to come up with wins and fails, so I'm going to come up with one.
Is that not the fail of the week? Losing on your home ice 5-2, 6-2?
I mean, that's your fail of the week. Sure.

So we are Still talking about Off Campus. Ethan and I, we already finished that because I don't know how these boys, after watching episode 3, the end, they could not watch episode 4. I binge it like—
That happened to me, Rose, where I like last like Friday or Saturday night or whatever, I watched episode 2 in the afternoon and then I went to watch episode 3 before bed and I watched episode 3 and then I watched, I was like, wait, I have to watch episode 4. So then I watched episode 4. And the way episode 4 ends, I'm like, "I have to watch episode 5 now!" And then I watched episode 5, and I was like, "Oh my god, I have to watch episode 6!" And then I watched episode 6, and it was 2:30 in the morning, and I'm like, "I really need to go to bed, but let me just see the first, like, 3 minutes or so of episode 7." So that's what I did. But, yeah, I finished the show, it's awesome, we'll get to it eventually, but Rose, lead us off on episodes 2 and 3.
So we left them as the deal, right? And we start like, we go there and Graham starts being so cutesy with Hannah and then she's like taking the picture and giving him a kiss in the cheek. And that's what led to one of the best scenes, like for me, is one of the best scenes in the show, the first kiss that they had. Roy, did you watch that scene? How about that scene?
I'm just sitting here watching you two have a conversation about something I really don't want to talk about.
Didn't you got excited in that scene? Like the part where she's like, oh yeah, you said no kissing, and then she grabs him and he's like, what's wrong, Graham? Didn't you say we need to practice? And then you said the great kiss.
This, this is the, the scene in the gym, right, Rose? Yeah, this was— oh, this was—
I think I have a picture there. And there's something—
and then she went and kissed his teammate.
Oh, that was, that was, that was ballsy. That was a ballsy play.
That was ballsy. But let me tell you something, in the, in the book it happens, but she doesn't kiss Logan, she kisses Dean. And when I found out she kisses Dean, I'm like, now I wanna— I now want that.
Which one is Dean?
Dean is the one with, uh, uh, blonde hair.
The one that hooks up with everybody.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
The one that's gonna take JLo Yeah, the playboy, the playboy guy. Yeah. Okay. Got you.
In the show they put him and I'm like, I get why, but bro, it's so like in the book he gets so jealous and everything and Graham in this one just smiles.
I'm like, I feel like he definitely got— there was some hint, there was a hint of jealousy there for sure.
But I want to see more.
Yeah.
But I feel like setting it up though. No, like, are they not setting it up for like that other teammate to maybe start developing feelings for the girl? So there's like going to be like a love triangle now. You can kind of see, I think, where we're heading.
And I don't, I don't like that storyline because I really like the idea of at this point, I really like the idea of Garrett and Hannah, and I don't like the idea of somebody trying to get in there, which is obviously happening with the guitar player. What's his name? Justin, the guitar player. So I kind of like John Logan. I'm a little suspicious of John Logan. I don't really like what he's trying to do in terms of these feelings that are kind of starting to develop for him.
Is that the nice teammate?
That's the one with the—
Yeah.
Yeah, the hair and the big eyes, kind of dreamy, I would say.
Dreamy.
Yeah, well, they set it up at the start of the show. They show us this great camaraderie between the teammates and how they all get along, and now they're about to throw a wrench into it all.
So yeah, yeah, and he's the best friend. Like, of course you need a little bit of drama there, but I just, I just think it was kind of also unnecessary, um, because you need to keep watching. But for me, like, that I finished, I think it's very unnecessary. Like, yeah, it doesn't add me.
It doesn't add really anything. Like, it kind of is just a storyline that's just kind of there and it never really gets developed. Wait, hold on. No, don't take that yet.
Stop spoiling shit for us, you guys.
Oh, a lot going on back here. Anyway, point be, uh, the point I was trying to make is that that storyline kind of like develops and it's just like it's there but it never really gets developed and I don't really—
You just went right back to doing what you apologized for.
What?
Stop spoiling shit.
I'm not spoiling anything. I'm not telling you how they—
what happens with this thing they're developing.
You're telling me where it goes. It's just kind of— I don't know. Anyway, okay, hold on. The picture that we just put up here, and I want to put it up again. This scene, Rose, where they're pretending to date in class, and because the other guy in class— if there's one scene where I like cringed the hardest and was the most like, this is the most ridiculous show, is when she knocks the water bottle over and it goes like tumbling down all over the stairs. And the, uh, the great line in this was he brings her a coffee, right? And the coffee has milk in it, and she's like, I'm lactose intolerant. And he's like, just, you know, just pretend or whatever. And she's like, I can't pretend to not be lactose intolerant. That was, that was a good play. That was what— very cheeky play. Garrett at this point playing exceptional, uh, role of fake boyfriend. But you can already start to see it develop. And it— once it— once we get to the party, that's when it really starts to develop, where you start seeing the fact that he's going to really start falling head over heels for this girl.
And I love the scene at the— at the party where they go up to bed and they're arguing over who is going to sleep in the bed.
Oh my God.
And then they both— and then it cuts to the scene and it's an empty bed and they're both on the sides of the bed. I thought that was really cute and really cheeky, and I thought that was fun.
It was a great way to end, uh, the episode because it leaves you like like, okay, uh, excuse me. So you put the next one, right?
Because the start—
this—
the end of that episode is they fall asleep. Yeah.
And he—
he goes back to sleep, right? Like, he leaves her on the bed and he goes back onto the floor and goes to sleep.
Yeah.
On the next episode.
Yeah, that was sweet when they fall asleep together, like, watching whatever YouTube videos. That's when you kind of start to see them— like, you start to feel like, okay, there's something that's developing here. But Rose, can we talk about the, the alley and— Can we not? The J.Lo and Maverick.
Oh my God.
This is the clip that's gone the most viral from the show. Yeah, right. Rose.
Yeah.
The J.Lo and Maverick dance. Yeah. There's a picture of it in here that you see him. You can take it.
Look at that, bro.
Yeah. Take it, Jay. Go ahead.
I wanted to put that scene, but because we're going to get flagged, I did not put it. But yeah, it's so like like, once you start hearing JLo and the song, and then she starts dancing, and then he gets in, and I'm like, oh, that's some instant chemistry there.
Dave, did you, did you see some instant sparks flying there when you watched the show?
I thought that her boyfriend was gonna walk in in the middle of all that. He just went out to get his, his Dunkin' Donuts cup from his car.
No, they can't do that because season 2 is gonna be them.
What a dork, that guy. Wait, Rose, that's a spoiler!
You guys are really bad at this.
That's a spoiler. Really bad.
I, I, I, okay. Um, my opinion of the show has not changed. It's just not for me. All right, it's bad, specifically the hockey action, because the opponents, uh, uh, against Briar or whatever the name of the college is, they were chasing the puck.
Yeah, what do you do, chase the puck?
No, they were legitimately chasing the puck. They weren't playing zone, they weren't being patient, they were just busy chasing everything, and they looked terrible.
Roy, I have a question for you. Did you expect to watch this show and see like high-level hockey, like, like zone defense, like a Rod Brind'Amour system out there.
I expected somebody to look like they knew what they were doing, and none of them looked like they knew what they were doing.
It's pretty— I will say it's pretty impressive the way they do these hockey shows because like—
because it's not in this one—
because I wouldn't have been able to tell that Ben— what's his name, Rose? Benmont, the actor.
Oh, but no, Belmont Cameli.
Belmont Cameli, thank you. Had never like skated hockey skates before that. And then like he's there skating. I can't even skate backwards. I've been on— I've been on skates. No, they're actually out there skating like they're doing the skating, they're doing the hockey scenes. And I've skated hockey, skated a lot in my life, ice skates. I cannot skate backwards. So the fact that they looked like there were some of the guys, like I think the guy who plays Dean is like played hockey growing up. Like he really knows how to play hockey. He knows a lot about hockey. But to, to be able to skate like that in just a short amount of time is really, really—
another fun fact, uh, the fiancée of Dean, she read the books and she was like, hey, you are Dean, you have to, uh, audition. He got the part because the, the, the wife-to-be wanted him to be that.
So the wife-to-be said, hey, you are this playboy, no, but screwing everybody, go, go audition for this.
That's a great point. But yeah, that's, that's, that's a story. That's a cute, beautiful—
and let me, let me just ask about something else. Does some— as I watch this show, they're very accepting about the open promiscuity of all these characters. She's falling for this guy.
It's a romance.
And then walks in on him.
Wait, wait.
No, no, no, no. But there's no— it's not the romance. They're all hooking up with each other.
Yeah.
She's mad about him and he's hook— he's going down on another girl, but then they're making up in the, in the street. And then like the, the couple, and she's with the other guy and, and it's all fine to the final, to the end, because I'm gonna, I'm gonna pick up that.
This is college.
That's college. That's, that's college, man.
That's what happens.
No, there's groups intermix and there's a lot of overlapping when you're in a tight-knit group like that. Yeah, there's a lot of, there's a lot of that when you go to college.
There's a lot of sloppy seconds.
The beginning of episode 2, they tried to use hockey terms as metaphors for pulling off the plan. It just sounded forced to me. It It didn't, didn't sound—
yeah, I didn't even notice that.
I didn't like that either. You're chasing the puck. You got, you got to sit back in your heels. And she's just like, what the—
are you talking about, dude? You got to trust the player. Do you trust me? That's so sexy.
Look at the puck, not— look at the player, not the puck.
Yeah, what puck? What are you talking about? Who's the puck?
Of course, he—
the puck is Justin and Graham is the player, so she has to watch the player because She has a player in front.
I did laugh. I think it was the start of episode—
You did? Was that the first time?
It was not at the show. It was at the advertising at the beginning of episode 3 because it was for Tinder.
Was it?
Yeah, there was a little bit of Tinder. That's true. There was like some swiping left and right.
Yeah, I just saw Nike Pro, but he put picture 2.15 that I sent you there.
2.15.
When I saw—
is it the Can You, Rose?
No, it is the one with— she's with Justin, but it's, uh, she's inventing, like, uh, she's dreaming. Uh, 2.15, it is her.
She— but she's not dreaming, is she, Rose? No, she's not asleep, is she, Rose?
No, she's not asleep.
No, no, she's very much awake in those moments.
Daydreaming while doing something else?
No, she's not daydreaming while doing something else.
She's sleeping because she wakes up And whenever he has the, you can, can you, like, I did not understand that part. And it helped me so much that they put that part because then we get to the scene where, yeah, that was it. That he's like, can you, I'm like, can you what? Because I didn't understand yet her problem.
Yeah, that was not a phone going off, by the way.
A phone? Roy?
Excuse me, they showed what it was. They had in her hands, like, they show what it was.
But what was it, purple? Was it pink?
I will say, beyond the, like, beyond the, like, if you want to actually dive into, like, the mental, like, thing that's going on here with her, I thought it was interesting in terms of just, like, the, her story, the, well, you can tell that it's coming, the hurdle that she has to get over, right, in, in order to do this and why she feels she has to do this and You know, obviously eventually you'll learn why and what happened and everything.
They know, but I assumed it in episode 1 when the guy passed by.
Give me the second to last picture. No, the— sorry, the one that says Idea 22.
Got it.
Yeah, there she is in the hockey jersey.
By the way, I want one of these jerseys. Their jerseys are cool. I would wear one of these. Briar. Especially the blue one. I would wear one of these jerseys.
With Graham in the back. Yeah, but, uh, Ethan, in that picture, when I saw her, uh, and I saw, um, her face, I was like, oh no, she's just realizing he likes him, and this is gonna become another thing, another show for me. When I, when I figured out what it was, what it really was, I was like, oh no, you didn't.
Yeah, yeah, I, I thought— yeah, I, I agree, Rosie. I thought in that moment too she was like, oh, I really like him, and then she's like, oh no. He has to make me do this in order to be able to do this with somebody else. And I was like, oh, that's kind of a wrench in the whole proceedings here, especially because at this point I'm already all in on just forget about Justin and just go with Garrett already.
I was like, no, this is too fast. And when I saw her face, I'm like, okay, now she realizes he likes him, so Justin is gonna be out of the picture. I'm like, no, that's too fast. It's just episode number 3. And then, um, when I, like, when you realize, like, oh, the, the face was, oh, I'm having an idea and I need to ask a friend. I'm like, no, you didn't. And it actually happens in the books. I, I thought it was just, uh, Amazon Prime trying to put things there to make people watch because I don't know why people love that.
But, um, man, that, that scene, I was like, yeah, no, this guy is really trying to get her to drink. Because in episode 3, while they're at the bar, she actually had the drink, right?
Yeah, but it's actually a comfort thing. And we can take this picture of the piña coladas here. Oh, hold on.
Because she had to try out some mixed drinks here. At first she tried out a dry martini. She spat that out.
She tried the blue thing, right? Like the blue concoction.
No, no, no.
It was before that. She tried an old-fashioned. She gave like a sour face and I don't know why.
And listen, I do that too.
And then the piña colada comes and then she has 3 of them. As you put the picture back up. Oh, she had a 4th one.
Yeah, she had 4 of them.
Well, yeah, she had a 4th one that's in her hand right now, actually, on the right side of that picture.
I will say, Roy, the feeling that I gathered from that is not him trying to get her to drink. It's him trying to get her to open up to him and be more comfortable with him and let her know that, hey, you can trust me. You're safe with me.
You will know.
He did give her an IPA.
Uh, he gave her an IPA.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, and, um, and also I want to bring up this because we were talking with Roy. I, I think the, uh, character of Jules— they did this to me again. She doesn't exist in the books and she's so unnecessary. And they did this to me in The Summer I Turned Pretty when they put Skye. It's just, we don't need her.
Yeah, she's just kind of there to keep the story moving and to kind of—
she doesn't even move it.
Yeah, she narrates the hockey games.
Like, she's just kind of— well, she's validating their fake relationship. She's like, it's her.
It can be be just the fifth line. You don't need her in the book. It's the fifth line.
You don't specifically— did not need her to narrate the hockey game.
Exactly. You like— it's just the extra that Amazon always loves to put in. They always do that. And I'm like, you, you give them too much screen time.
Uh, some breaking news out of Colorado: Caleb Carr is not playing in game 2. That's it. That's all I had to say.
So for here, to wrap here, uh, the last picture is the last, uh, not, not the last, but the second to last E Uh, this show, the episode 3.
Oh, you kept the caption in this?
Oh yeah, it ended with her, uh, asking Graham for an orgasm, and I don't know how that was a shocker.
That was a shocker, Roy. Rose, I was very— when she said that, I was like, oh, okay.
The name of the episode was called The Orgasm.
Yeah, I know.
His reaction was crazy.
I just put next, and when, when, when she was saying— I thought she was gonna be like, hey, I like you. Hey, I need you to give me another gum, some Alec.
A lot of pressure. No, a lot of pressure.
A lot of pressure.
She's got a deal.
A lot of pressure.
She's got her own deal, apparently. I mean, I don't— that's, that's what also confuses me because like apparently is this like a long-standing issue? Because clearly she's like comfortable with her body.
She's got to watch episode 4. You gotta watch episode 4. Really?
Okay.
Yes, you do. It's good.
I, I don't—
so we have to watch another 2 before next week?
I say all of them if you want.
I don't, I don't want to.
That's not, it's not possible.
On the Cale Makar subject, Roy, if the Avs lose tonight with Cale Makar, they are in deep, deep doo-doo.
Out.
Without Cale Makar. Thank you.
You're welcome.
They are in deep, deep doo-doo because it doesn't look like he's—
Yeah, you're gonna say that twice. You don't say that twice.
I just wanted to say it doesn't look like he's gonna be playing anytime soon necessarily. So they better win tonight. This feels— it's, it's late early if you're Colorado going back to Vegas.
Dave, what do the Avalanche do without Cale Makar? How can they adjust to that?
Do the same thing they did in Game 1. They were fine in Game 1. As long as they can get pucks on net, capitalize on their chances, they'll be okay. Like, Colorado is a deep enough team that they can survive without Cale Makar. Like, they don't want to, obviously, but just because one of their best players is out of the lineup, they're not going to pack it in and go home. And I don't think they should. I don't think that they're going to struggle a lot without Cale Makar. I just think they're a very good team. So we'll see how it plays out.
Thank you to everybody who watched Game 1 of the Western Conference Final with us. You saw that the Avalanche lost to Vegas. So that was great that you guys joined us. We will do this again next week on Wednesday as The Hockey Show will watch Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final between the Carolina Hurricanes and the Montreal Canadiens. At Bell Center.

Roy, David, and Ethan discuss what went wrong for each team and what they need to fix to take back control of their series. Then, Rose leads the gang in a discussion of episodes two and three of the hit series Off Campus. To no surprise, Rose and Ethan remain all in, Dave is teetering, and Roy has no interest in watching the show.
