Episode summary

In this episode of the IHIP News podcast, hosts Jennifer Welch and Josh Welch react to the aftermath of recent US elections, arguing that Democratic leaders such as Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies should face accountability and be less dependent on donor money. They discuss calls for a bold progressive agenda, criticism of the pro-Israel lobbying group APAC, the role of Black voters in the Democratic wins, and a petition urging House Democrats to replace Jefferies as leader.

The hosts present their views on these issues, and listeners will hear the arguments for pressing party leaders to be more transparent about donors and private deals.

As we're all still basking in the victorious Blue Naomi, I would like to give a shout-out to the Fox producers who have started tuning into this very podcast here and featured us last night on their show. Make sure you tell and remind your viewers that you had to pay a billion dollars because you're liars. Welcome. Feel free to clip us up. The more you show us, the more money we make. So thank you so much for contributing to pro-democracy media. Moving along. We won, but now the fight begins. The Democrats have a mandate to do bold things, to roll out a bold agenda.

We want the era of prostitution politics over. And Senator Chris Van Hollen seems to agree with us. Let's pop this up. Van Hollen tells me Democrats should not commit to voting for Chuck Schumer or anyone else for leader without getting commitments for a bold agenda. He says working people have been screwed for way too long, and we need to unrig an economy that has been built to serve billionaires and big corporations.

It's not a time for incrementalism. It's a time to move forward a very bold kitchen table agenda. Josh.

Josh Welch00:02:11

Well, it's refreshing to see. I think we're seeing that from other senators as well. And one of the things we've seen in the last day or two since the election was the appearance from Schumer and Jefferies and these other leaders that they want to play nice guy politics, that they don't want to pursue accountability. They shy away from that responsibility. And if the election taught us nothing else, it's that the American people, the Democrats in this country, demand some form of accountability.

And I think personally, guys like Schumer and Jefferies, they're a little bit removed from what the voters want. They're in the state of New York. I'm not throwing shade at the state of New York, but the interest up there are different than the interest across the country, especially in the middle of the country, in other places where people don't understand this nexus between the United States and Israel. They just don't understand it. And it's refreshing to see. I hope these other senators come out, and we've seen others that have made these same demands because the will of the Democrats is what these candidates need to listen to.

We went through this again in '20 and '24, and if they don't follow the will of the voters, they're going to see a mass exodus from this party.

Jennifer Welch00:03:26

All right. I'm going to push back a little bit. The voters of New York do want something completely different than Schumer and Jefferies. Schumer and Jefferies' favorables are both below 20%. Democratic Socialist Zoran Mamdani is at a high 50, some say 69%. So there is a huge disconnect no matter where you live. Americans in blue states, Americans in red states, Americans all over the place came out and voted for exactly what Chris Van Hollen is saying here, a bold agenda.

Furthermore, look at all the House seats that flipped in New York. These are bold new members of the House that are not bought and paid for. And it doesn't matter what state you live in because Schumer and Jefferies are not popular here. People here think they're too conservative. People here think they are preservationists. And so that low 20%, below 20% approval rating that they both are now, I don't know, taking a victory lap. They missed the ride here.

I didn't see either one of them down fighting in Florida. I didn't see Chuck Schumer funding Angie Nixon. And I will never, ever forgive him for that. That woman fought her heart out with hardly any money and zero support from Chuck Schumer and Kristen Gillibrand, another New York politician. And so I think that this is a nationwide bipartisan, not a red state/blue state thing. This is an American thing. And Americans want the era of prostitution politics to be pushed aside.

And we want people who are not leveraged and who are not compromised that can come and look in the camera and tell us where they stand. For example, Jefferies did this. American people don't want us to get even. They want us to deliver. Well, what did Jefferies have to do last night? He had to go on Don Lemon and other places and try to clean that up and say, "We're going to fight." And he's put out this ridiculous video on his Instagram. Why is he having to do that? Why is he saying one thing here and another thing there? He's inconsistent because he has two different people he has to talk to.

Jennifer Welch00:05:35

His funders, the people like APAC and big tech that give him money, and then the voters. And so that's why you see the shifting message. With Zoran, does his message ever shift? With Bernie, does his message ever shift? And let's take a listen here to new senator-elect from Minnesota, Peggy Flanagan. And she doesn't have to shift her message either. And here she is calling for Chuck Schumer to be replaced. Let's play the clip.

Speaker 500:05:58

I'm tremendously grateful for Chuck Schumer's leadership and what he has done over the last many years. And I think it is time for new leadership. One of the things that we heard last night resoundingly across the country is that we are in a point of a new movement in this country. Many of us were elected who refused corporate.

Speaker 600:06:24

Address.

Speaker 500:06:24

Who are beholden only to the people who.

And are ready to fight for bold change.

Jennifer Welch00:07:02

All right, Josh.

Josh Welch00:07:03

I believe she was elected in the state of Minnesota, correct?

Jennifer Welch00:07:07

I believe so, yeah.

Josh Welch00:07:07

And so she saw what happened up close with ICE and how these agents ran rampant through the state of Minnesota. Schumer and Jefferies didn't see that. Other people didn't see that. She had to live it. She had to go through it in her state, as did many Americans across the country. So the concerns for her, having lived in that environment and seen that, are personal. And they are to us too. Like when we watched Alex Pretti and Renee Good get murdered in the streets by agents and neither have had any kind of meaningful investigation into their deaths.

And so when you live that, when you experience something like that, and then you see someone like Schumer or Jefferies placate to the right a little bit and say, "No, we're more focused on affordability, not accountability," suggest things like that, you know they're compromised by APAC money. It makes you angry. It makes you pissed off. It makes you think, "These people are disconnected from the will of the Democrats and what we wanted when we showed up in massive numbers to vote for change." And that's what she's saying. She's voicing that out loud, and rightfully so, because it seems like they get amnesia.

It seems like they forget all of the hell that the American people went through for months, the destruction of democracy. When the election's over and you reach across party lines, there is no reaching across party lines. There is accountability. There is consequences for your conduct. In criminal law, we talk about one of the 35-53 factors in federal court. They talk about deterrence. It's a big factor judges consider when they issue a sentence. The reason for that is you want to deter other criminals from committing these types of acts.

The same concept applies here. You want to pursue accountability and consequences because it will instill deterrence for other administrations when they come into office to commit these same type of illegal, corrupt acts, period.

Jennifer Welch00:09:05

And I would just say, I think America has had a foreign policy expression that we don't negotiate with terrorists. And I see MAGA as terrorists. I see APAC that funds a lot of these politicians to send our taxpayer money and our bombs and our weapons to terrorize Palestinians and kill little kids and kill women and create the largest population of amputees in the world, and Israel being the number one killer of children in the world. I see that as an act of terrorism.

And I don't think we should negotiate with these people. And APAC is taking a little victory lap. They are now congratulating its candidates online. Let's pop this up. APAC congratulates the hundreds of pro-Israel Democrats and Republicans who won their elections last night. More than 234 candidates supported by APAC members have already won, with many additional races still too close to call. We congratulate Senate Democratic leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic leader Hakeem Jefferies on the resounding victories for their caucuses.

To me, this is disqualifying. If Chuck Schumer and Hakeem Jefferies really were America First politicians and really understood the gravity of the Blue Naomi that happened, where you have Kansas, where you have Texas, where you have a complete repudiation of corporate PAC money, a complete repudiation of all of this shit, for APAC to take a little victory lap and congratulate you, they're saying, "Stay in line.

Stay in line, you guys. There is no appetite for this anywhere. I am tired of the Israel lobby trying to censor our free speech. I'm not about it. I don't want our taxpayer money going to Israel. If you think that me criticizing Israel is somehow an affront to you personally, that's a you problem. That is not a me problem. You need to go sort that out with your therapist because I'm an American. I have a First Amendment right. I can criticize the Saudis. I can criticize the Russians. I can criticize the Israelis.

I can criticize whoever the fuck I want to. Get used to it because we are so sick of this shit.

Josh Welch00:11:27

I view this as APAC kind of saying, "Fuck you," to Schumer and Jefferies because you know when that tweet landed, they were both like, "Oh, God. I've got my base riled up, and now you're going to tweet this shit." And they're reminding them that, "Hey, you took our money, okay? So we're going to throw you up on the tweet. And don't try to run from us now. You gratefully accepted that check from us." And therein lies the problem. Like you said, it's when you give these massive sums of money in elections, it's not a grassroots movement.

You're not sending $50 for the cause or $75 for the cause or $200. You're sending tens or hundreds of thousands. And guess what? That's for access. That's because they want to change or influence your policy. There's no other way to explain it. And Schumer and Jefferies are going to have to reconcile that. They're going to have to come out and say, "Yes, we took all this money." And the problem with that is, no matter what they tell us, we're not going to believe them because they're leveraged. You can't believe it. And so I think APAC, yeah, they're taking a victory lap.

There's another thing too we talked about. APAC is changing the way that they're giving candidates money to where you're not going to be able to tell that it's APAC money. That's another thing that's coming. And so we'll continue to follow this. I know I have full faith that you're going to stay on top of this issue.

Jennifer Welch00:12:47

Oh, I mean, eagle eye. I am laser-focused on it. And I just want to remind everybody, incremental politics and politicians that take big money are complete prostitutes. And when they are with their donors, they sound just like this. Play the clip.

Speaker 600:13:04

All the aid that Israel needs. I will continue to fight for it. And we delivered more security assistance to Israel, our ally, under my leadership than ever, ever before. We will keep doing that, everybody. It is so important. Fight to give Israel what it needs.

Jennifer Welch00:13:24

All right. I want to say this. That is disqualifying. That is unacceptable. We had registered foreign agents in Mike Rogers' campaign. Haley Stevens, who ran and endorsed Mike Rogers, was Chuck Schumer's pick. Chuck Schumer picked her. And it turns out at the end of the day, she was MAGA all along. She was a liar. She was there to work for Israel. And I just want to say this because this is really important. I think the fact that the descendants of the Holocaust have been paid reparations is a beautiful thing.

I think that the diaspora of the Jewish people, now that a lot of them are in the United States, have laws that protect them from bigotry and politicians that want to stamp out antisemitism is a beautiful thing. And I do not besmirch the Jewish people's successes here in the United States. I think it should be a source of pride for all of us, especially anybody who has studied World War II.

And we've done that. And we're going to continue to fight for universal human rights. But now it's time to do that for Black Americans. Black Americans have been under attack by these political parties. They've been used as political pawns by both political parties. The Supreme Court just stamped out the Voting Rights Act. Angie Nixon was ignored, completely ignored by Chuck Schumer, Hakeem Jefferies, Cory Booker, et cetera, because she exercised her First Amendment right and said, "I don't want taxpayer money going to Israel."

It's time to start lifting up the Angie Nixons. It's time to finally stop incubating the soft fascism that simmers all the time when we lie to ourselves and say we're a democracy and we're over-policing these Black neighborhoods. And then when Black people say, "Hey, I'm a victim of racism," or, "Hey, we're getting over-policed," then we say, "Hey, you're a race hustler. You always shout racism." It's time to do this and move on to the other people in the United States of America. Everybody deserves safety. Everybody. And we need to take the money that we used to invest in Israel and invest it in Black and Brown communities here in the United States and lift them up and keep them safe because this shit that Chuck Schumer is doing here and his ignoring of Angie Nixon tells you everything you need to know.

Jennifer Welch00:15:55

Everything you need to know. When push comes to shove, he won't stand up for a Black Democrat. No. That's him with all of his donors while they're all clapping there for him. It's gross.

Josh Welch00:16:05

Yeah. And I would like to make one point. So you see this Israel First or pro-Israel movement by a lot of these Democrats. You don't see the same thing for the Black community. And I'm going to suggest to you that the reason for that is money, okay? It's plain and simple. The Israel money that flows into politics versus African-American or Black community support groups, super PACs. Black people don't have a super PAC to go around and paying people millions of dollars to advocate for their communities, their interest.

So the issue to me is money, okay? I don't know that a lot of these politicians have any sort of allegiance to Israel other than money. They're bought and paid for. It's not like a lot of them, a lot of these American Zionists, they're not Jewish. And so just think about that. If some of these super PACs had millions of dollars to spread around to pay politicians to advocate for African-American or Black communities and their rights, policies that would benefit them, then this might be different.

But it's all about money.

Jennifer Welch00:17:09

And we can make up for that. We have to.

Josh Welch00:17:12

That's right.

Jennifer Welch00:17:12

Black people came out over the biggest majority and voted for this blue wave. And we owe them for saving democracy.

Josh Welch00:17:20

That's right. We did.

Jennifer Welch00:17:21

Black people saved democracy on Tuesday. Full stop. Go look at how white women voted. Go look at how white men voted. Older ones. Younger ones, you did pretty good. I'm pretty happy with you. But the older ones, Gen X, our generation, hugely problematic. And so we owe this community, to quote JD Vance, our gratitude for saving democracy because they literally did. They literally did. And it's time to put them first, Democratic Party.

Josh Welch00:17:47

The only thing I want to add to that is they did that. And this administration is trying to rewrite the history of the Black community. You know that they're trying to, you know, like here in Tulsa, they're doing the same thing. So they're not just punishing them. They're actually trying to erase their history.

Jennifer Welch00:18:02

All right. And then we have Americans are now speaking up about replacing Hakeem Jefferies as we should, as we should. Let's pop this up. Hundreds of thousands have signed this petition to get House Democrats to pick a new speaker. Mark Ruffalo, friend of the show, just shared change.org. And then Sludge, we covered this yesterday, did an article on all of Hakeem's donors. And Josh and I were talking about this.

Go to change.org. It has 450,000 signatures. But Josh and I were talking about this yesterday after we filmed. All of these donors that have been calling Lyon Ted and Little Marco and all of these asshole Republicans, now they see that the winds have changed. And so all of these big tech guys, crypto, guess who they're going to start calling now? Guess whose phone is probably lighting up like an intercontinental ballistic missile at this moment? I guarantee you it's Chuckle's and Hakeem's.

And it's not from the people. It's from these oligarchs are now going to just go, "Oh, okay. Now we can buy these people."

Josh Welch00:19:13

And I think we've already seen that. We reported yesterday that I believe it's Hakeem Jefferies, former chief of staff, went to work for a lobbyist group that lobbies on behalf of Palantir, Peter Thiel's company. And so we're starting to see that. And you're going to see more and more of it.

Jennifer Welch00:19:30

All right. And AOC talks about how difficult it is to run for leadership. Let's play this clip.

Speaker 500:19:37

I already ran for a leadership position and failed because these are secret ballots in which you need to get the entire Democratic caucus to vote for you. Your electorate is House Democrats. And the vote is not public. I know people see that thing that happens on the House floor and people stand up and say a name, but there's actually a closed-door election that determines who the nominee will actually be.

And that's going to happen in a couple of weeks.

Jennifer Welch00:20:18

So this is why we need to start this pressure campaign right now because we can demand transparency. We don't have to do politics as usual. We can demand, you know, "Get on our podcast. Who did you vote for for speaker?" We want that. We should demand of these Democratic leaders, "We want you to be transparent." And let me just give you guys a little insider tip as to what happens when I have politicians on the podcast. If I have a Cory Booker when he came on this podcast, his team wants to know what questions are going to be asked, what the subjects are.

And we say, "Look, here's kind of what we're thinking, but Jennifer, you know, they just let it go." Well, I started to ask. Cory Booker said he had had it with political money and politics. And I was like, "Hmm, really? You've taken like a million bucks in APAC money." And he's like, "Oh, it's minuscule. It's minuscule." And so that's when I went like, "Hey, do you think Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal?" During filming, his staff is melting down. They're texting Kylie. We didn't say we were going to talk about this. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Oh my God. Thumbs are going. I mean, keyboard warriors. Then I got in a fight with a guy that works for Cory Booker after that.

And they're still mad about it. You have on Ro Khanna. You have on AOC. You have on Abdul El-Sayed, Zoran Mamdani. Go down the list. Bernie Sanders. They'll say, "What are the subjects today?" And we'll say this. But Jennifer often, you know, goes off course. Okay. All sounds good. Ro doesn't ask anything. He'll come in and talk to anything about to anyone. There's no text. There's no shutting it down. There's no freak out afterwards. Those are the politicians that we deserve. The ones who don't have to have a cheat sheet and two different scripts.

This is what I tell my donors. And this is what I tell my electorate. The era of prostitution politics must be over. And any politician, Republican or Democrat, that is ready to come in and say, "No question is off limits. I'll talk to you about everything," is welcome on this podcast. And that's what we deserve. We deserve those types of politicians with that level of transparency.

Josh Welch00:22:22

And I think you can demand if they come on your show and talk to you, you can demand transparency and say, "Look, I'm going to ask you who you support." And because there are all these kind of backdoor deals that are cut, you know, in privacy and secrecy. And somebody's, you know, trying to get it on a certain committee or somebody. So they barter back and forth with each other. And what's lost in that is they forget that the reason why they're in the majority is because people voted for change, not for this same bullshit amongst an elite group of Democrats that are cutting deals back and forth with each other.

And if they do that shit, we need to promise, promise to make an effort to have a mass exodus of the Democratic Party and some meaningful reform and change, some consequence for that.

Jennifer Welch00:23:04

And I would like to welcome in closing here. I would like to welcome Senator Cory Booker to come back on my podcast and say, "No question is off limits. You can ask me anything." And I'm going to sit down and be transparent and answer why I didn't endorse Zoran Mamdani, why I didn't endorse Abdul El-Sayed until somebody called me and forced me to put out a tweet, why I didn't lift a finger for a Black woman down there working her ass off in Florida after what Black women went through with the loss of Kamala Harris.

I want to ask you about that, Cory Booker. And I want to ask Hakeem Jefferies about that. And I want to ask Chuck Schumer about that. And you're all welcome to come on this show and make your case as to why you think the era of prostitution politics is so important. But we're not doing the list and your aides texting, "Oh, God. Oh, fuck." That shit is over. Go over to CNN for that shit. I mean, we're not doing that. The media has been democratized. And there is a mandate for the people.

We, the people won. We, the people won. Kansas, Mississippi, Iowa, Texas is blue. They got a fucking trifecta. It's unbelievable. It's beautiful. Join us. You three need to tell your donors to go fuck themselves, that you now have a mandate to fight for the American people and say, "You know what? This was the way it was. And we were wrong. And the people have said it. And we believe in universal human rights.

And we're here to fight for you." That's what we deserve. All right. That's all we have. Make sure you subscribe to the channel. Get my book, Not Today Fascist, which at the time I thought the name was great. But now that on Tuesday, the entire country said Not Today Fascist, I'm really loving that. And we'll be back later with more news.
