This is the Dan Levator Show with the Stugatz Podcast.

00:00:08

Juju, put it on the poll, please. Is the most famous game Karl-Anthony Towns has ever played a practice? Yes or no?

00:00:19

That's a great, great take, especially for a dude that's had a 60-point game.

00:00:25

I want to put it to America and just ask them, is the thing that you remember about Karl-Anthony Towns' career the fact that he got smoked in a practice? Can you also— I want to sharpen up the guest bookers around here. I'd ask them to get me the one-armed woman who was handed a ticket unfairly. Handed, probably not the verb I should use there. And I'd like to get the guest bookers to get me, and hurry up about it, some sort of New York politician so I can ask what the city is like and whether it's going to burn here because—

00:00:54

Just not that one?

00:00:55

I want to talk—

00:00:57

we already had him on somewhere else.

00:00:59

And Trump going to Madison Square Garden as well. Get me— just get me— hurry up and get me a New York politician to talk to so that I can talk about what's going on in New York City.

00:01:06

Minus 300, he'll be booed.

00:01:08

I hope it's Eric Adams. Check Albania.

00:01:12

We like him.

00:01:13

Zazz, what is this new game you and the crew have been playing? I feel envious that you guys have a game that I'm not involved in. No one's invited me. No one's asked me to be part of it.

00:01:21

Zazz, you think Dan would like this game or not?

00:01:23

Dan, you know about that 82-0?

00:01:25

I do not.

00:01:25

Alright, so I realize that Tony, you've been playing it this morning. Locked in. Mike, you've been playing it. Jeremy's been playing it.

00:01:32

Yep.

00:01:33

Chris, have you played it? 82-0? No. Roy, you've been playing it, right?

00:01:36

Yes, I have.

00:01:37

See, yesterday I was playing— I was sucked into it for a good hour, I would say. An hour straight. And I kept saying every time I started the game, "Okay, last one, last one." And then like, I wouldn't get the score or the record that I wanted. I'm like, "Alright, let's do it again, who cares? It'll only take a minute." And so there's this new game called 82-0. It's, it's at 82and0.com where you, you randomly have to pick a starting five of an NBA, for an NBA team, and it simulates what your season record would be. And so the goal is, can you get to 82-0? But it's not just, hey, let me pick a starting five. The wheel spins and it gives you a team and an era from the '60s to the 2020s. And so you're, you're limited to that franchise in that decade. And then you pick the team, then you spin again, and you have to fill up all 5, and you have to fill up the positions based on what positions the players play. And so the goal is, okay, can you build a team that goes 82-0? The best I've done, Tony, I've gotten to 77 wins.

00:02:44

Yeah, I've gotten to 76 wins. But Dan, one thing that Zazz is not mentioning The game is rigged.

00:02:49

It's— I found out what the rigging is. The— it seems the only way, because Dan, I put together some winners. All right. I dare you to beat some of these.

00:03:00

But how many combinations do you think is going— like, whatever the computer—

00:03:04

there's one key. There's one key. You got to have Wilt.

00:03:08

So Wilt more than Jordan?

00:03:10

Yeah.

00:03:10

Yeah.

00:03:10

Well, more than anybody who's ever existed ever on the planet.

00:03:13

Well, it's the key.

00:03:14

What it is, is you're getting their averages in points, rebounds, and assists for that decade. And so Wilt had a decade—

00:03:23

you gotta get Wilt with the Warriors, right?

00:03:25

In the '60s, where he averaged 40 and 25.

00:03:28

Yeah.

00:03:29

And so because of that, when you're adding all of these things up, that's what helps you get to 85.

00:03:34

The computer is just adding up counting stats. It's not taking into account who's playing where, right? Essentially.

00:03:40

Well, it's also about that.

00:03:41

No, but you can't put Shaq and Wilt on the same team and then just take the big stat monsters.

00:03:45

They're only eligible to play center.

00:03:46

There are certain people that are eligible for like center and power forward, top 2 dunkers.

00:03:51

LeBron is eligible for all 5.

00:03:52

That's right.

00:03:53

LeBron plays all 5 positions.

00:03:54

Russell Westbrook would be another guy who would help a lot, right? Because you'd be padding your rebounds from a guard position.

00:04:00

But Wilt only plays center. Like if you get the Lakers in the 2000s, obviously you're going to take Shaq. And then if you get the Warriors in the '60s, You can't then take the team—

00:04:09

Yeah, you just missed out.

00:04:10

But what about Oscar Robertson and like—

00:04:12

Another good one. Yeah, they're good ones.

00:04:13

I had a build with Oscar Robertson.

00:04:15

Look at you, you know good basketball players.

00:04:17

Not just big giant numbers.

00:04:19

No, well, how about we have Dan play it on the air for the first time to see if it's as catchy as we think it is.

00:04:26

That would be cool.

00:04:26

No team has benefited more from this than the 1960s Atlanta Hawks.

00:04:31

This could be a running segment, a new segment, Dan Plays a Game.

00:04:34

Because that is where this game defaults. So most people are getting familiar with the 1960s Hawks in ways that they never thought before.

00:04:43

Yep. It's a great game, Dan. I'm a little bit addicted.

00:04:46

All right, well, let's do this live then and put me on the spot here. But I'm going to need to understand a little more and I'm going to ask for some help from the group having not played it on right now. The way that you've described this to me, I would just grab the great 5 numbers guys in the league, triple-double guys, and just throw— we're just doing points, rebounds, and stats.

00:05:06

All right. So we have this available for you. We're going to play it live on the air right now. Dan, a couple things that you need to know. You have the traditional spin, and then you have one lifeline where you can change just the team and keep the era, or you can just change the era and keep the team.

00:05:21

All right, you only use that once.

00:05:22

Oh, I never did it. I went straight only.

00:05:24

Now you're a sucker. You see, you don't even know how to play.

00:05:26

Well, then maybe Dan Rawdogs it here.

00:05:28

Go ahead, Dan, give it a spin. But I, I will go ahead and spin it, but, uh, explain to me the one— explain what you just explained.

00:05:36

Oh, oh, you got a shot! You got the Infinity Stone!

00:05:39

Okay, you got a real legit shot in the game.

00:05:42

You're in the game.

00:05:43

Let me explain the rule though. The rule is you could switch the team or the era one time. Of your 5 starters, you can switch either of those one time.

00:05:51

So we obviously, we gave you Wilt there, Warriors in the '60s, because that's obviously where you're gonna take. So you have your center spot filled now.

00:05:58

But we can also, if I— just to be clear, on one player, is it unwise strategically to one time change both the player and the team? Do it with one.

00:06:08

You can't change a player once you select a player, and it would be extremely extremely unwise to change Will Chamberlain.

00:06:14

Don't make the game not fun.

00:06:16

From where you're at, just so you know what you can do, the next time we spin, say you get the Bobcats of the 2010s.

00:06:23

Terrible.

00:06:24

More likely than not, you're not going to want to take one of those players. So you can have the wheel spin again, either for the era and keep the Charlotte franchise, or you could change the team and it'll randomize for you, but you'd stick with the 2010s. So you could also theoretically on the same turn spin each of those, but you're not going to want to.

00:06:45

All right, let's reset.

00:06:46

Let's go ahead.

00:06:47

We have our next spin and it landed on the 76ers of the 2020s.

00:06:52

All right. And statistically, it shows you the top guys, you know, so you go Harden there. You can't pick Embiid because he only is available for center. You could pick James Harden, who's eligible for 2 positions, or Tyrese Maxey.

00:07:06

You can change the era or team.

00:07:08

Okay, but how do you guys feel about—

00:07:10

Oh, Jesus, man, come on. Just pick. You're already making this game unfun by asking questions.

00:07:15

Yeah, I now hate this.

00:07:16

Yes, I'm not— we're not going to explain what you can do for a third time.

00:07:19

No, okay, but why? If Joel Embiid is healthy— No, no, those stats—

00:07:25

you have Wilt. You're not gonna pick Joel Embiid. You have Wilt.

00:07:29

I would change the team here in this spot.

00:07:31

Why?

00:07:31

You could put Harden over at point.

00:07:33

He's got good stats.

00:07:34

Remember, it's Sixers Harden.

00:07:36

Yeah, you can change the Airs in 10. Change the era. Maybe you can get the '90s and get Charles Barkley, or just do—

00:07:44

already that early? It's not too early. Change the team.

00:07:46

Oh, the team.

00:07:48

Good move.

00:07:48

No, but I think Harden's gonna be pretty good.

00:07:51

Oh, you kind of only have one choice here, Danny.

00:07:54

It wasn't a great move. Wasn't a great bad—

00:07:57

Tony, I'm sorry, Tony, I failed you there. You told me what to do and I didn't go with you. I went with Zazz because he was so confident. Yeah, go sit in the cuck chair.

00:08:05

Not a good move.

00:08:05

Go sit in the cuck chair. Really?

00:08:07

He wants to stay.

00:08:07

Oh, is it Tony? No, not Tony. Tony did it right.

00:08:10

I'm the one in charge here. All right, all right. Give it— let's reset. Go ahead, throw it back up there. What do we get? Ooh, the Lakers of the '80s. Zazz, you know what those Lakers were called?

00:08:19

Magic!

00:08:20

Well, no, the Lakers— no, the Lakers were not called the Magic.

00:08:23

Pick Magic!

00:08:24

Showtime! Showtime! But they were the Showtime!

00:08:27

You gotta pick Magic! Okay, Magic it is.

00:08:29

But do you want to put him as your shooting— all right, we put him as your shooting guard.

00:08:33

He could have been— we can swap it. It's not too late to swap.

00:08:36

Is it too late to swap?

00:08:37

Yeah, Zaz, right? It's never too late to swap.

00:08:39

Yo, I don't know what you're talking about.

00:08:41

Go ahead and put him at power forward.

00:08:43

We can't do that.

00:08:44

Well, now it's too late. We already chose shooting guard. Oh, no, no, no, no, we moved him. Yeah, you can swap after you spin. All right, now you have the LA Clippers of the 2020s. Ooh, Kawhi. You can put Kawhi at shooting guard.

00:08:56

I got another shot at Harden. I'm going to keep skipping him.

00:08:58

You can go Kawhi at shooting guard.

00:09:00

I don't like my chances late in this game.

00:09:03

Do you want to go with Kawhi Leonard as your shooting guard here?

00:09:07

Yes.

00:09:07

All right.

00:09:08

Could also be your small forward.

00:09:10

Why am I still listening to the cock?

00:09:12

All right, one spot to fill. Small forward. Oh, you got Charles Barkley. Great. All right, you have a shot here.

00:09:20

Phoenix in the '90s.

00:09:21

Let's see.

00:09:22

I ain't going undefeated.

00:09:23

You, you have a shot.

00:09:35

Yeah! That's right!

00:09:40

First strike!

00:09:41

Yeah! Dan! Wow! I can't believe it! What a day! First strike! Oh my God! My leg! You're welcome! Hey! Oh hey! Oh! Hey!

00:10:00

Don't you feel euphoric, Dan?

00:10:03

82 and 0 on the first try!

00:10:06

You can retire, Dan.

00:10:07

It's over.

00:10:07

You never have to do it again.

00:10:09

So I ruined the game or I perfected it?

00:10:11

No, you perfected it.

00:10:12

Never play it again.

00:10:14

All of you have played it and aren't— and are losing?

00:10:16

Have never got that.

00:10:17

No way. I got it once.

00:10:18

It's really difficult to do. Really difficult.

00:10:21

That— that—

00:10:22

we couldn't have— we couldn't have done that any better.

00:10:25

What a decision by me to change the team!

00:10:28

Better than sex.

00:10:28

I mean, the Wilt part really does help.

00:10:31

I was worried.

00:10:32

I was worried with Cade Cunningham. It's like we built an 82-0 team with the 2020s Pistons being brought up. Amazing.

00:10:41

Uh, those are all all-timers though around him, so that is true.

00:10:45

Of course they are. Well, what do you think, we're building teams of Bronny James?

00:10:48

I saw Bogdanovich. I saw a random Bogdanovich on one of these lists.

00:10:53

It's a good team you built.

00:10:54

It's a good team.

00:10:55

I mean, it's perfect. It's, it's 82-0.

00:10:58

Flawed 3-point shooting though.

00:11:01

Again, Wilt, Wilt really helps here cuz I built one with Wilt that went 82-0 and my power forward was Lamar Odom with the Clippers.

00:11:09

Good player. Great.

00:11:10

I stretch 4, good player. But having Lamar Odom and going 82-0 was a big shocker for me.

00:11:17

Traveling used to mean I completely abandoned every good habit I had. Sleep, Gone. Nutrition? Terrible. Next thing you know, I'm in an airport eating chips for breakfast while trying to convince myself that this is somehow part of a Stanley Cup playoff diet. That's why Kachava travel packs have become part of my routine this summer. They make it ridiculously easy to stay consistent when you're on the go. I just throw a couple packs in my bag and I'm set. Just quick, all-in-one nutrition wherever the day takes me. And honestly, I feel the difference. Kachava is packed with plant-based protein, fiber, vitamins and minerals, greens, probiotics, electrolytes, and more. I've had better energy during the day, and I don't feel like I'm trying to recover from terrible travel eating decisions afterward. Plus, it tastes good. Chocolate, vanilla, matcha, coconut, acai— they've got options. I have chocolate and vanilla. I take one scoop of chocolate, one scoop of vanilla, mix them together. Boom. Delicious. No artificial flavors, colors, sweeteners, no fillers, no nonsense. Take your daily ritual with you. Go to kachava.com and use code DAN for 15% off your first order. That's Kachava, k-a-c-h-a-v-a.com, code DAN.

00:12:26

Summer always hits different once the big games start stacking up. Now you've got finals games on every other night, baseball's rolling all week, racing on the weekends, and suddenly everybody's looking for an excuse to get together. The other night, a buddy texted me, "We've got the game on, come through." I figured I'd stop by for maybe an hour. That was optimistic. Next thing you know, everybody's locked into the game and we're all part of the coaching staff Somebody's yelling at the ref. Somebody else is suddenly an expert on pitch strategy, and nobody's even pretending they're leaving early anymore. It's one of those nights where you take a sip of Miller Lite, look around, and realize, yeah, this is exactly what summer is supposed to be. That's why Miller Lite is always part of these nights for me. It's clean, refreshing, easy to drink when it's hot outside, and perfect for long nights hanging with friends, watching games. An all-American summer? Starts with an all-American beer, Miller Lite. Go to MillerLite.com/Dan to find delivery options near you, or you can pick up some Miller Lite pretty much anywhere they sell beer. It's Miller time. Celebrate responsibly.

00:14:34

Don Libertard.

00:14:35

John Zaslo. How you love that catchphrase. Bad news for opposing teams in the Triple-A.

00:14:52

Stugatz!

00:14:53

He's all smiles till the Bronx are clutch again. Clutch again. Clutch again.

00:15:04

This is the Dan Levatar Show with the Stugatz. Getting back to my beloved Knicks real quick, when I tell you, Zazz, your favorite teams, emotional attachments of all time in South Florida, what do the emotional attachment rankings look like for teams that maybe didn't just win it all, right? Like, because I want to— I want to talk— totally, totally— I want to talk about what, what the New York City fan is feeling right now for the specifics of all of you said we couldn't win with Karl-Anthony Towns. Towns. All of you said Jalen Brunson was too small. All of you said we traded too much for Bridges. All of you said we shouldn't have gotten rid of Tibbs for Mike Brown. All of you make fun of us about how much we love Josh Hart's 15 rebounds in a game. All of you make fun of Mitchell Robinson can't make free throws and, and can't play basketball really except for grabbing offensive rebounds and dunking. Uh, in South Florida history, where were the emotional attachments to you for a team that you felt you like, you love? Because no one else understood how gritty good that team was.

00:16:21

Oh, for Heat. Yeah, probably for Heat. First one comes to mind.

00:16:24

2021, Sesta Cyclones, the spring champs in Battlecourt.

00:16:32

Oh, 3 Marlins.

00:16:33

No, but they won.

00:16:34

Yeah, right. The, the 2021 spring champion Battlecourt, um, Sesta Cyclones had Joseph in the front court.

00:16:42

Yeah.

00:16:42

Oh man.

00:16:42

You know, 23 Panthers.

00:16:44

The, uh, the sports fan. I don't know what gets more annoying to hear if you're not a sports fan of the team, then nobody believed in us. It was against all the odds.

00:16:55

I could, I can make an argument in South Florida history, a team that captivated the hearts and minds of South Florida that didn't actually win it was the '96 Panthers, because that still is gold medal for like a sweeping sensation that made absolutely no sense. Hockey was super new here. Most of the people cheering for Vegas does it all the time. Vegas gets— but we had the Rats, like we had the Rats, like the we had like things that were actual pop culture sensations.

00:17:22

Well, this is what's happening with the Knicks right now, win or lose, because you make fun of me about those Panthers. They were swept in the finals and it was a bunch of discards, like it was a bunch of players. It didn't even make any sense. I got to think Vegas is feeling this way about its team right now. And I got to think Vegas, uh, Tortorella will never buy a meal in Vegas again. Like, put it on the poll at Le Batard Show: will Tortorella ever have to pay for a drink or buy a meal in Vegas?

00:17:45

Well, if you go to the tables, you don't have to.

00:17:46

No, those drinks cost $1,000. Like, those drinks, they cost— every time I go there for a free drink, I'm down $800 that I just had for a margarita.

00:17:55

I mean, Tortorella's gotta win. If they lose this series, nobody cares about him.

00:17:59

This is the United States of Tortorella! This I would not say for the New York Knicks. I would say already they are this thing I'm talking about, and now New York waits expectantly for the payoff because it's been building. It's been building for years where you're watching them get better, get more doubted, get better, get more doubted, get better, get more doubted. And, and now they just have— like, the, the idea that they just won a road game, okay, with Brunson just being okay, and it's the worst game I've seen them play in a month. Like, they just, they just beat Wemby in the worst game I've seen the New York Knicks play in a month.

00:18:36

They hadn't won a road Finals game in 32 years.

00:18:39

They've never in basketball seen a team win this many road playoff games by double digits. The Knicks are already the record holder there. There's been no basketball team ever dominant enough on road playoff games to win all of them by double digits the way that they have done recently. I just can't articulate to you how much New York City is falling in love with the fabric of this team, with the story. This is the sport that sells stories.

00:19:09

You can't You've been trying.

00:19:12

I'm gonna keep trying. I'm gonna go to New York and I'm gonna shout it from the streets. I'm gonna go— I, I'm gonna get out of here as soon as these guest bookers get me a politician. They better do it quickly. I'm gonna go to a flight in New York and you will see me wandering the streets shouting and dancing with unhoused people.

00:19:29

Homeless is fine.

00:19:30

Close down, close dancing, slow dancing. This is why Sam is better at comedy than I am. Because he's not afraid of some of the phrases that he's not allowed to use.

00:19:40

He doesn't have the credibility or integrity that is up there to potentially be lost. So when you say these things, it's like, whoa, Dan Le Batard said what?

00:19:51

Finally! I'm headed out in a little while because Pablo is doing something that I don't actually know if I can talk about, but it's a cool thing he's doing. Can you guys find out? Let's talk about it. Well, I want to actually, because what I'm doing is something— See, what Pablo is doing, it's not just that he's doing investigative reporting that's interesting, he's also getting nerd chic popular.

00:20:17

I know what this is, you cannot talk about that. You just can't.

00:20:19

I don't know what it is, but tell Tony.

00:20:21

You said too much.

00:20:21

Yeah, tell me.

00:20:22

You've already said it.

00:20:22

Change the subject.

00:20:23

I'm probably not gonna watch it, but tell me. You're gonna give like a little hint to what it might be and people are gonna guess it, so don't do that.

00:20:28

There's no way they'll guess it.

00:20:29

No, there is potential.

00:20:32

Nerd chic popular tastemaker?

00:20:34

There's a way that they can guess it. I— people can put two and two together given stuff that he's done before, so stop it.

00:20:40

Okay, anyway, you've got that to look forward to.

00:20:44

So you're gonna be there?

00:20:45

Well, I'm flying there for the day. Coach? I'm not flying coach.

00:20:54

No, I was trying to think of a coach joke. No, he's in construction.

00:20:56

I thought— I was trying to think of a coach joke, a football coach joke, and that's what I got.

00:21:00

He's actually building the plane in the air.

00:21:02

Woody Hayes or something?

00:21:03

That's another Dan Bingo.

00:21:07

I wish that we could talk about what Pablo is doing, but that's unfortunate. I'm glad, Mike, that you, uh, you can after it happens.

00:21:15

That's it. Since no one knows about it, you're not—

00:21:17

oh, so it hasn't happened yet, but it will happen by the time that Dan gets there.

00:21:20

Of course it hasn't happened yet. Dan's going after the show today.

00:21:23

Don't talk to me like that. Oz the Mentalist has the opportunity to do the funniest thing in the world right now, just ruin the surprise.

00:21:30

I thought we were very close to the funniest thing in the world, which is Nick Wright in that suit having to give an Emmy to Pablo for his reporting because he was—

00:21:39

I don't think he liked that yesterday though.

00:21:42

No, he said he wasn't gonna like it, and we, we tested the theory on him.

00:21:45

He left by saying, I wore that to my wedding. He got married in that suit that we were mocking.

00:21:51

Fran Royale bag, that's the best one.

00:21:53

Easy.

00:21:54

Fran Royale, huh?

00:21:56

I think typically Nick dresses very well. Typically.

00:22:01

Yeah, he lashed out at me as a result.

00:22:03

So you guys think he was hurt? Because I, I don't— he doesn't strike me as someone to get up in his feelings.

00:22:07

I don't think he loved it. Well, but if it is your wife is your stylist.

00:22:11

These are all things that he said.

00:22:13

Yeah, his wife picks out his suits. He got married in that suit.

00:22:16

Yeah, he said he was going to no sell it in, but he looked like something from Hamilton. Yeah, the thing is, like, I don't think it's so much like the outfit, even though the outfit— I get it, you know, it takes a lot of courage to wear crushed purple velvet. But, you know, it's the general esthetic. It's the long hair and the lined up beard with that.

00:22:37

Did he or did he not look like somebody from Hamilton? Yes or no? Just because of the combination of hair, but it also— the suit was a bit of a— the fit. You know what it is? I'll tell you what it is. That Nick's general esthetic, like his spirit, uh, cigarettes and gambling, it's not really made for a suit. Like, he can also wear a suit, but he's a man of the people. Like, he's like— him in a suit is something like— I know it's for television and it's a big award ceremony and all that, but Nick's at a poker table. He's not in a suit.

00:23:07

Yeah, that looked more Bridgerton than it did Hamilton. Yeah, the color. Fancyful.

00:23:12

We almost— thank you, Tony. That's— that is— it did look all of those things. Yes, it did look all of those things. But we almost got the joy of Nick Wright having to hand the Grammy— or I'm sorry, the Emmy, the Sports Emmy to Pablo on a night that also Mina defeated his studio show. NFL Live won the Emmy and he wanted that. And he thinks Pablo and Mina are his rivals. We were denied all that. And you heard he was mad at Metal Ark because he said, you know, I'm on a big show and we had 5 people there and Metal Ark had 30. And I would, I would tell all of those people to never go to that thing again because sports content people are terrible at making that a fun evening like that was a very hard and always is a very hard night to watch. It's not very good television, even though Roy Wood Jr. is great.

00:24:03

To be fair to us, all 30 people were contractors sent to improve the mezzanine. That was funneled through Dan's now shell construction company. I think I'm pretty sure.

00:24:12

Sehr gut, sehr gut, sehr gut.

Dan Lebatard. While there's nothing official and conversations are still ongoing.

00:25:07

Was that a fake Shefter?

00:25:09

Excellent.

00:25:09

It was pretty good.

00:25:10

It was excellent.

00:25:11

I feel like there's legs.

00:25:12

I tried at the beginning and then I lost confidence in it. Why?

00:25:16

It was good.

00:25:16

It was good.

00:25:16

You got this.

00:25:17

There's nothing official. Yeah, it's so good. Conversations are still ongoing. Stugatz. It is trending towards Nick Sirianni remaining the head coach of the Eagles. This is the Dan Lebatard Show with the Stugatz. Oh, look at this. The guest bookers have come through. Look at this. This is very exciting during a very exciting time. I see— is, is Hakeem Jeffries ready? Is— I see him coming up here because I wanted to talk about what's going on in New York.

00:25:51

Fantastic camera he has.

00:25:52

Yes, he looks great. And I'm guessing that he feels great because of everything that happened is happening in New York. He represents New York's 8th Congressional District since 2013. I think he's a Knicks fan since birth and he's the House Democratic leader, Hakeem Jeffries. Thank you for joining us. And I'd just like to know the last time that you felt as good as you feel today about sports.

00:26:14

You know, it was probably the last time the Yankees were in the World Series and Jay-Z, you know, opened up singing Empire State of Mind. The stadium was on fire. I was watching it on TV, and that certainly was a great moment. But as a long-suffering Knicks fan, And, you know, this has been an incredible run by an incredible team. They are very likable, you know, starting, of course, with Jalen Brunson, someone who sort of embodies the grit and the spirit, the heart and soul of what New York City is all about. And, of course, with players like Cat and Jason Hart, you know, and others. So, you know, this is— this has been a long time coming in terms of the good feeling. The city, when the Knicks are good, I think there's nothing like it in terms of the city rallying behind the Knicks, and we're seeing that unfold over the last couple of weeks.

00:27:10

Josh Hart, I will make that correction.

00:27:12

Josh Hart.

00:27:12

That's okay. The heartbeat of the team. But when you said that Yankee Stadium was on fire, I was requesting you, at least in part, because I think in— I don't want to say the most positive way possible, but I think that the celebration in New York is going to be unlike anything we've ever seen for a sports team because it's the Knicks if they win the championship. And I genuinely worry about the safety of people if that happens. I'm not even kidding.

00:27:37

Well, listen, I mean, I think, uh, New York's finest, the NYPD— no more professional law enforcement agency in the world than the NYPD— and I expect that they'll do everything possible to keep, you know, the city safe. But you're absolutely right, and we've seen, you know, sort of the enthusiasm break out on the streets of New York all across this playoff run. Uh, you're right, that will be an incredible parade. It'll be an incredible explosion of joy. And, uh, as always, you know, the responsible thing to do by the authorities is going to be to make sure we keep everybody safe.

00:28:14

You have to bet and be right. If Donald Trump shows up at MSG for Game 3 or Game 4, does he get booed? Yes or no?

00:28:21

I think it's more likely than not that he gets booed.

00:28:24

And that's probably just a result of, one, you know, listen, sports is a unifying thing, and, you know, politics right now is very polarizing. And so I think the beautiful thing about this Knicks run, for instance, everybody who shows up in the Garden, whether you're a Democrat, a Republican, or independent, the one thing that unifies them is that they're Knicks fans and they're Americans. And I think many might view sort of the presence of the president, who of course is a very polarizing figure. We just saw that play out with the situation with the Giants, uh, is, you know, that, um, you know, the welcome may not be as enthusiastic as what he might like.

00:29:08

Is the city prepared, uh, or preparing for the Knicks winning a championship? These things, uh, have safety concerns.

00:29:15

Yeah, well, you know, Commissioner— Police Commissioner Jessica Tish has done a tremendous job, administration into administration, in terms of the public safety dynamics and, you know, the safety of the city. Obviously, there's always room for improvement, but we're seeing that, you know, murder's down, homicide is down, shootings are down, major crimes, you know, are down. Things are moving in the right direction. And nobody handles big events like the City of New York. New York, right? The greatest city in the world, in my humble opinion. And so I'm sure that preparations are underway. And I'm also sure, you know, that the city of New York will get whatever cooperation that they need from Governor Hochul and the state, as well as from the administration and the federal government.

00:30:03

You are, as you told us last time, a terribly sad Jets fan. Were you more disappointed or mad to see Jackson Dart introducing Donald Trump at an event supporting Mike Lawler of New York's 17th District? Who you've described as not a serious person and told to keep your mouth shut during the government shutdown. Uh, more disappointed or mad?

00:30:24

Well, I was definitely disappointed, uh, just from the standpoint of— yeah, I mean, I knew it would be a polarizing thing, um, and, uh, you know, as a player, I think Jackson Dart has been very impressive in terms of what he did in his first year in the league. And of course, when you make the decision to appear at a political rally, particularly with the president, and presumably in support of an effort to hold this, you know, very swingy seat in the United States of America, it was a little bit disappointing.

00:31:04

How does this work? Can you just get into MSG if you want tickets?

00:31:11

No, that certainly— excuse me, excuse me. That certainly is not the case.

00:31:15

Jesus. You okay? You all right?

00:31:19

I'm okay. That certainly is not the case. I think the reality of the situation for all of us is that we got to pay fair market value, and that's how it should be.

00:31:32

Okay. So I want to ask you about that. —fair market value. It's crazy.

00:31:35

It's going to be the most expensive ticket in the history of New York. Yeah.

00:31:38

For a regular citizen of New York, the cheapest ticket right now is $7,500. How is that possible?

00:31:47

Well, New York City is the most expensive city in the country, and that is a problem. And we all actually have a responsibility to deal with the high cost of living. Now, obviously, you know, $7,500 ticket is is kind of beyond the pale in terms of the inability of everyday New Yorkers to be able to afford that. We've seen, you know, these ticket prices move in that direction, but everything in the country right now unfortunately is more expensive. We think that's actually one of the areas where Democrats and Republicans should come together to try to figure out how do we lower the high cost of living. Now, our ability— and, and I'm talking about housing, I'm talking about healthcare, I'm talking about gas groceries and goods. You know, obviously the NBA Finals is a particularly special situation, but the good thing about, you know, I— when the Knicks made their run in 1993, I wasn't able to go to any games back then. I just graduated, you know, from college. But I remember watching the game, you know, in Lower Manhattan at a sports bar. Can't recall which one it was at the time. And with a whole bunch New Yorkers, most of whom I didn't know.

00:32:56

And it was a great community-based experience. This was Game 2, particularly when John Starks had his famous dunk over Michael Jordan and another Bulls player. And, you know, those are the type of experiences that I think New Yorkers, you know, are going to enjoy, even if they are unable to be in the world's most famous arena.

00:33:20

I want to ask you some more specific political questions, but more generally as it regards Trump and going to this game, uh, oh, and just making himself comfortable within, uh, sports. In your lifetime or in all of your historical readings, have you ever come close to understanding anyone as corrupt as this human being in the history of American politics? I have not.

00:33:43

And, you know, I think, you know, unfortunately You know, what we've seen, including most recently, you know, with the effort to try to provide $1.8 billion in taxpayer funds to people who on January 6th violently and brutally beat police officers. That's something that all of us should be against. But for whatever reason, this administration, at least initially, thought that it was a good idea to do this. And listen, I think in government, We all have a responsibility to come together to combat corruption wherever it's found. So that's the House, the Senate, certainly with the Supreme Court, and in the context of this administration, because fundamentally taxpayer dollars should be used to make life more affordable for the American people, right? Not to subsidize the lifestyles of powerful donors or the family members and friends of those in government connected to the president or beyond. Like, that's just, you know, that's not an effective use. It's not an acceptable use of taxpayer dollars. And that's particularly the case when so many people, working-class Americans of every race and of every region in this country, are struggling to make ends meet.

00:35:04

Why did you call for the shutdown of the ICE facility, Delaney Hall, in Newark? Work?

00:35:10

You visited, right? So I visited on Sunday with a handful of other members of the New Jersey delegation. And listen, a few things. One, we need a strong, a safe, and secure border in the United States of America, and we'll continue to stand up for that principle. At the same period of time, we think that immigration enforcement in this country— we are a nation anchored in both the rule of law and a nation of immigrants. That immigration enforcement in this country should be fair, just, and humane. And that's not what's taking place at Delaney Hall. Now, it also is the case that not a single person who we spoke with at Delaney Hall is a violent criminal. Not one. Not a single person. In fact, many are working their way through court cases to try to have their legal status vindicated. And in one instance, we were speaking to an 18-year-old teenage girl who was just a month away from graduating in high school, and she was ripped away from her community, from her classmates, from her family members, and held in detainment for months. This makes no sense to us. We interacted with people who were dealing with serious medical illnesses but were not getting the type of access to basic healthcare treatment necessary.

00:36:41

We were interacting with people who were entrepreneurs, small business owners, people who were paying taxes. These are law-abiding immigrant family members who we were dealing with at Delaney Hall. And it's a privately run detention center. And its objective is to make profit. And when you have a privately run detention center like Delaney Hall, then the incentive is to actually cut corners, cut costs, which often means inadequate food, inadequate living conditions, and certainly inadequate medical treatment. And that's what we learned about, experienced, and witnessed when talking to more than a dozen people at Delaney Hall.

00:37:26

Hakeem, I've got one of my producers in here, and he's asking desperately to ask a question that doesn't have anything to do with what we're talking about, but can you hold up your hand here, and for the visual audience and the audio audience, he wants to ask a question that we've been asking around here this week.

00:37:41

It's a big heated debate we've been having all week. We're trying to figure out where does the finger end and the hand begin?

00:37:50

Where does the finger end and the hand—

00:37:54

yes. And so explain to the audio audience as well as you point. You can point to wherever it is you want to point. I'm— I was saying that it is, uh, that it is, uh, above the knuckle or at the knuckle. They're saying it's below the knuckle.

00:38:08

I actually think it may be below the knuckle, and I would put it at the creases right here, you know, across the The bridge. Yeah, but you guys—

00:38:18

yeah, but no, but I'm saying you— the knuckle is the halfway point, but there's a second knuckle. There's a— so is it beneath this, the knuckle of a fist? Is it beneath that or at the start of that, the knuckle of the fist?

00:38:28

I see, that's a good point. I think, I think I'm in agreement with that. The knuckle of the fist, you know, makes, makes a lot of sense. Listen, we'll have to put that on the congressional agenda to see if we can get some expert testimony. Thank you. And circle back with you with an answer.

00:38:43

These are the important things. Priorities. Thank you. A politician you can trust, someone who's got his priorities in the right place. Thank you, Hakim. Nice to see you. Thank you. I'll be with you, my fellow New Yorkers, in a few hours. I can't wait to be there.

00:38:56

Thank you much.

00:38:56

Go Knicks! Yes, sir. Zaslav, we were having— I always put politics in everything and I ruin it by putting politics in everything. And, you know, we were having fun. We were playing games. I was 82-0. Everybody was having fun. And next thing you know, I look into the studio and everyone is drifting off like they're drifting off sleeping. And they're also like drifting off further away from the microphone. Phone and the fun we were having just moments ago.

00:39:21

Hard to come back from Jason Hart.

00:39:24

You guys, he lost you right there.

00:39:26

If you would have said Josh Hart got 15 big boards and played like a big body boy, I was like, all right, I'm in with him.

00:39:31

You think he's just thinking of the Kentucky coach? I did think Zazz crushed it during that interview, as always.

00:39:39

He just watched. 6-star effort from you.

00:39:42

Oh, awesome. He likes to watch.

00:39:46

I don't know. What are you, speechless?

00:39:48

Say something. I asked the question that was important to me about ticket prices.

00:39:52

That's true, I forgot you asked that. But did he lose you on Jason Hart?

00:39:56

That was tough, and he was going to lose me as well when he talked about the run in '93, because of course the Knicks made the run, made the Finals in '94. But, but then when he referenced the John Starks dunk, that was the '93 playoffs. It was a good detail.

00:40:09

Yeah, I thought he rebounded well. I thought that that's what he was doing specifically because as an expert politician politician, he realized, ooh, that's a bad— the Josh Jason mistake's a bad one. I got to come back and show people that I— look, I do go back with the Knicks. That— I thought that was expert politicking. Yeah, that was good.

00:40:29

Nice chat with you. Do you rebound after this?

00:40:32

No, that certainly— excuse me, excuse me— that certainly is not the case.

00:40:36

That was Cody-ish. Like, I— he summoned the spirit of Greg Cody with that. Like, that— that was a $10 fine, Dan.

00:40:42

You didn't want to give it to him.

00:40:43

I don't know. Mike, there, there has not been— we do not have a more efficient funny joke in the history of our show than Greg Cody's inner monolog slightly coughing one time. There's not a more efficient joke on our show. I don't think he's noticed it. Do you guys think Greg has noticed it? I don't think he's noticed that you are coughing as his— he looks around, he's like, so unprofessional.

00:41:14

He's like, Who else is coughing that they're not talking about?

00:41:18

Look at that jerk.

00:41:20

Hey, that's what I'm talking about. That's my line. Bonetti's doing them until the Tigers lose. He's putting them in every broadcast.

00:41:30

Fabulous.

00:41:32

How was Bonetti?

Episode description

"New York City has fallen in love with this team."

Dan has threatened to leave the show and fly to New York early if we can't get him a politician to discuss the potential of the city burning, but before we see if we can land one, the crew wants to introduce Dan to the new 82-0 game and play it live on the air.
