Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy? Not quite. On Humor Me with Robert Smigel and Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guests, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between songs banter.

00:00:18

Where does your group perform?

00:00:20

We do some retirement homes.

00:00:21

Those people are starving for banter. Listen to Humor Me with Robert Smigel and Friends on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

Last night, a blown call changed the game. This morning, the internet lost its mind, and nobody's telling you exactly what happened. That's where Sports Slice comes in. I'm Timbo, and every episode we're cutting through the noise, breaking down the biggest moments in sports, and giving you the real story behind the headlines. And we're going straight to the source— the athletes themselves, their locker room stories, their reactions in the moment, and the stuff nobody gets to hear. Listen to Sports Slice on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. And for more, Follow @TimboSliceLife12 and the TikTok Podcast Network on TikTok.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal, but encouraged. It's the Enhanced Games. Some call it grotesque, others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

00:01:22

Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

00:01:29

Hey, what's good, y'all? You're listening to Learn the Hard Way with your favorite therapist and host, Kier Gaines. This space is about Black men's experiences, having honest conversations that it's really not safe to have anywhere, but you're having them with a licensed professional who knows what he's doing. How many men carry a suit of armor? It signals to the world that you not to be played with. And just because you have the capability, that does not mean that you need to. Listen to Learn the Hard Way on the iHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.

00:02:09

Hey, Jonas!

00:02:16

Hey guys, welcome back to your favorite Jonas-centered podcast. I have news.

00:02:22

I have news.

00:02:23

I can't wait to hear your news. What's up, Nick?

00:02:24

Uh, I have been appointed a new title by the U.S. government, uh, in conjunction with, with—

00:02:29

I think I'm also a part of this.

00:02:31

You could be, but I don't know if you've gotten the call yet. I have gotten the call with a letter as well. I've been appointed to the Department of Society and Culture. Um, very excited about this.

00:02:42

Society.

00:02:42

I'm the minister, the Minister of Society and Culture.

00:02:46

So our podcast. That's our, that's our category.

00:02:49

We created a category so we could have the number one podcast. If you're wondering what we do, it's mostly podcasts and the occasional vlog and occasional sing.

00:02:58

What does one minister do, Nick? What are they, what are their roles?

00:03:02

It's pretty important. Interviewing, looking at prompts and prep for the interviews. Although today Joe said that he's going, uh, he's going to raw dog the pod is what you said.

00:03:14

So raw Raw potting.

00:03:16

Raw potting this because you did zero prep.

00:03:18

Well, this episode brought to you by Raw Pods, wherever you can raw your pod.

00:03:24

All right, I heard a knock at the door, which means our guest is here.

00:03:27

He's here. He's timely.

00:03:28

Yeah, he's very timely.

00:03:29

Let's welcome Teddy Swims to the pod.

00:03:32

Teddy Swims. Yes, goddamn time, bro.

00:03:35

What's up?

00:03:36

My wife is so jealous that we're doing this right now. She's the biggest fan.

00:03:38

We're so excited to have you on this and Um, me and Teddy go way back. Let's hear the history. Yeah, the history.

00:03:44

All right, well, how we met.

00:03:47

Okay, so my buddy Jesse in London was like, yo, I'm gonna go see this amazing show tonight, you want to come? And to be honest, as a musician— I don't know if you feel this way— as a musician, I, on days off, I don't really love going to concerts.

00:03:59

Never, man.

00:04:00

Yeah, I'm not big on concerts, but I went.

00:04:02

Thing to do.

00:04:02

I went, I was like, all right, I'll go. And I was— I'm a fan, but I was like, I'll go. I didn't know Your live show, like, I was like, my jaw was on the floor. I was, I was fangirling, taking videos the whole time. The show itself is just so great. Your discography is unbelievable. Your voice is amazing. We have a lot of similar friends that we work together with, but I was floored. And afterwards, like, hey, if you want to come say hi to Teddy after the show. So I went backstage and this was in, uh, you played a couple nights of this. Yeah, your song was like going on like 12 weeks or something crazy. It was nuts. Number 1, that is.

00:04:33

And I—

00:04:34

we met and it was all love. And you told this amazing story that I could not believe, and I never even heard this before. I was like, what? And we hit it off. We had maybe 1 to 12 tequilas, something like that. And then fast forward, you know, we stay in touch. I see he's gonna be playing Coachella, um, the main stage, which is insane. And I'm like, yo, bro, we just started texting, and I was like, if you need a background singer, man, count me in. I'm gonna be out there.

00:05:00

Well, so here's the— here's the story of the bit. Yeah, you got to tell the story. When—

00:05:02

when—

00:05:02

okay, when I was I was 15, my, uh, my girlfriend at the time was serious, serious girlfriend, obviously. Yeah, of course, my first love, you know. Uh, well, you know, we had lost our virginities to each other too, and our song was When You Look Me in the Eyes.

00:05:18

So we were there.

00:05:18

But yes, bro, so, so, um, we're not—

00:05:22

not—

00:05:22

I don't think we made love to that song at the time, but, um, so, you know, I, I told Joe that we were actually at Lakewood Amphitheater in Atlanta. You guys played a show, Demi was playing with you guys. It was right around Camp Rock because it was her 16th I want to say it was.

00:05:37

The Camp Rock tour, probably.

00:05:38

Yeah.

00:05:39

Okay.

00:05:39

And jeez. And so we were at that show, man. And so like, you know, I was so madly in love. And so I told Joe that and when we met. And so it was so cool. And we were trying to figure out something to do for Coachella. And he's like, man, I remember that this song means a lot to you. Would you want to do it? And I was like, dude, if— I mean, only if Rose are cool with it, then I would be so absolutely down.

00:06:01

He did clear it.

00:06:02

I have a text.

00:06:02

I have a text. I'm like, yo, I'm gonna go sing. You guys cool with it? I think I was already like, to be honest, sound checking. And I was like, hey, I'm like, I'm still doing this. So if you guys say no, that's on you. Now correct me if I'm wrong, Teddy, you were in football at the time?

00:06:16

Yes. Okay, so the bit was, um, so I was—

00:06:22

I was—

00:06:22

it was a Wednesday night. I still remember because I skipped football practice to go see you guys at Lakewood.

00:06:27

And wow.

00:06:27

And my, uh, my coach at the time, you know, every time you miss a practice, you'd have to like run like laps. And so when I came back, all the dudes have found out that I'd like skip football practice. I remember them being like, you boosted football practice to go to the Jonas Brothers show? So my, my coach ended up making me run double. Oh my gosh. But where's he at now though?

00:06:52

Exactly.

00:06:54

Well, not here.

00:06:56

That is wild.

00:06:57

Well, we're happy that you were a fan back then. And no, man, Vegas, my God.

00:07:01

That's so cool.

00:07:02

So I watched the performance, um, on the stream that you guys did of, uh, Look Me in the Eyes, and I have to say, if there's anybody that's gonna sing my parts of a song, dude, it'd be Tate Swimmers.

00:07:12

What a blessing.

00:07:13

Uh, pretty fitting.

00:07:14

Both sounded incredible.

00:07:15

And we got so good. I mean, he also had David Lee Roth.

00:07:19

Yeah, bro, that was—

00:07:20

which was so iconic. And like, what a rock star. I mean, through and through, dude.

00:07:25

On— yeah, on and off stage, bro, is just like so, so— he had called me, um, I remember like going into the second weekend too, and he had called me like prior to the show. He wanted to talk on like Thursday, and he's so old that he like, he won't learn his phone. So he calls his manager to call mine to put a four-way call on to talk about it. And so he had tried to get in touch with me for like 3 days. And finally we got on the call and he's like, hey Teddy, so I thought we were gonna talk about the show or anything like that. And he says, man, so I was, I spent like a year living in Thailand and When I was out in Thailand, I was— I did this like 1,000-mile jungle bike ride. Whoa. And so I had this— we had these jungle bikes and I had this JBL speaker sitting right under my balls, man. And I made this playlist. And I don't like listen to a lot of rock and roll music. I listen to music like you do, like you like play like soul music and like R&B music and stuff.

00:08:20

He says, so I made this 13-hour playlist and I want you to listen to this playlist. And I think it might influence you, inspire you. But when you listen to it, I want you to think about me in the jungle hills of Thailand on my jungle bike, just ripping with this JBL under my balls. I want you to think about that when you listen to this playlist. Did you listen to the 13 hours? I didn't get that far.

00:08:43

So what's the Coachella prep like?

00:08:45

I mean, the prep is, is, you know, it's— I mean, we're in the midst of doing a bunch of other things, and so it was kind of hell.

00:08:50

I mean, I, to answer that question a little bit, Kev, because as a, as a guest, like, rolling—

00:08:56

you haven't done it at all, so I'm just curious.

00:08:58

For the one day, it's so fun rolling up and seeing this, you know, the care your team put into the attention to detail. I mean, the stage he had within the stage, it's amazing. It's really amazing.

00:09:08

And I love the door, letting the guests through the door. It was great.

00:09:11

It's great.

00:09:12

Knock, knock, knock.

00:09:12

Yeah, dude. Uh, okay, so we got, we got a little— we got The Funk by Positive Force. Yeah, Take Back the Night, Justin Timberlake. Can't Stop the Feeling, Justin Timberlake. He's got some Halsey on here, man. Some Disclosure, some J. Cole.

00:09:26

It's all over the place. I love it.

00:09:29

We got Joyride. We got some— I would not Yeah, man, I, I did not ex— I didn't take him for a J. Cole fan, really, man. You know, uh, to Frank Sinatra. It's all over the place, dude. I like that.

00:09:42

It's 13 hours. You need some vibe shifts.

00:09:45

Back to Ireland by Baja, man. You guys know that record? I don't think—

00:09:48

play it.

00:09:49

Play it. I've never heard that.

00:09:51

We gotta hear that.

00:09:52

Oh, hold on. I don't have—

00:09:55

wow. I could see the, the jungle bike on this though.

00:09:59

Kind of a vibe though.

00:10:00

I think he was fucking with you.

00:10:01

This is not a real playlist. He just put a bunch of songs on here.

00:10:07

This is, this is like something you would ask ChatGPT to make for you.

00:10:11

You know, I gotta say also, one of the coolest things— and you're a new father, congrats. Yeah, new-ish, 11 months old, you said?

00:10:18

Yeah.

00:10:19

It's a two-part question. A, really, what was that like having your son at— I mean, you play Coachella. I'm on— I'm like, there's a moment I get to watch your your wife and your son watching you and like, you know, obviously it's goo goo gaga, but he's like, he knows, he's like, that's my dad.

00:10:37

Yeah, dude, it was, it was, I mean, I remember like right before we walk out, you know, and he's sitting right there and it just, dude, sobbed. I just like so grateful that he like was able to be there. And we had bought this like, uh, it's called like a, a W4, like, you know, like a, like a kid wagon, right?

00:10:56

Yeah.

00:10:57

But they made this like limited edition, like Volkswagen bus version of it.

00:11:00

I saw it.

00:11:02

You know, it's hard. He was just riffing around Coachella in this thing.

00:11:06

It was the right on cars.

00:11:08

I mean, we spoke about a little bit, but like being a dad for you, what, what's been the biggest change in your life since becoming a father, man?

00:11:18

You know, I, I think, I think that, and, um, I think present is like really the thing that I've learned the most about it. Like being— I find that like even I even see this sometimes too, like I've had this happen, or I still am guilty of this, where I'm with my son and I'm doom scrolling, and I'll just catch myself like, what are you doing, bro? Why are you doing that? And I'm trying to— I got back from the gym not too long ago, and this is one thing that really was a revelation to me that I got. He crawled right over to me. He's so excited. And I pick him up and hold him for a second and I set him down because I'm trying to cook a little something real quick to eat. Sure. And he's crying. And then I was like, hold on, son, give me a second. And I'm trying to cook and he's crying and I pick it back up and I was like, all right, let daddy do something. And starts crying again. And it just dawned on me because I found myself getting frustrated with this 10-month-old at the time.

00:12:10

And I was like, I said, you know what? And I just turned the stove off and I was like, man, that's not going to be happening forever. And honestly, eating can wait. It's optional. I felt like getting frustrated with him because I was hungry. It's just such a, I don't know. I felt so weird in my soul about it that I was like, you know what, let's go sit down on the couch. Let's go play, man. And I think that the biggest thing that I've learned and I've heard, man, my sweet friend Thomas Rhett say this all the time. He's like, no matter what, man, just look at those kids in the eyes, man. You just make sure they know that you're there and that you're available. And those times I find it, as somebody that's always constantly feeling like I'm not doing enough or I want to be doing more and more and more. I find that sometimes when I'm with my son and he's just playing and doing his thing and I'm watching him, we're just watching Bluey on TV or something. I'm like, this is the most productive thing that I could be doing right now or ever at all or for anything.

00:13:11

And it just makes me feel that I want to be, when I'm at my work job or when I'm at home or wherever I'm at, I want to be where my feet are and be grounded right there where with who I am and where I am and like just present.

00:13:26

Wow. So good, dude.

00:13:28

That's— love that.

00:13:29

Lovely.

00:13:29

Yeah. I mean, words to live by, dude, you know? Yummy.

00:13:32

Well, it's just something to struggle with. Yeah, every day, right? Like, I take those words very seriously with what you just said, for sure.

00:13:39

Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamist sect.

We were God's chosen kingdom on Earth.

He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back.

Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.

00:15:02

I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across.

00:15:08

When Jacob met Levon, this went to a billion-dollar fraud.

00:15:12

But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?

00:15:19

The largest tax investigation in American history.

You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me?

Jacob told Levon, you're ruining my life.

00:16:31

Dude, how was it with the show when you guys were all like doing the thing, when you had the reality bit going on?

00:16:37

Uh, didn't have kids yet. Um, so when we did Married to Jonas, it was just me and Danny and the fam, but luckily we didn't have, uh, the girls. But we kind of— the minute we got pregnant actually, uh, with our first, Alina, we decided not to continue because I was like— we both knew that it was a little bit too much on the family. And like, it was also like, we, we're new to it. I'll be completely honest with you, I think we would have done it very differently now, but like was in our actual house, like lit rigs like this, like in your house, and the people showing up and then just leaving the house a mess. And we were like cleaning up the house at night before we'd go to bed to like reset it for the next day. It was just like, yeah, it was a lot. Um, it was cool during the time, but for the time being, like, it was great. But having the girls, we— they didn't— then obviously the band was broken up at the time, then after that. Um, so we didn't have them— they didn't see us play or even know kind of that part of my life until they were actually more a little older into everything, which was really, really cool.

00:17:29

So then they came to the 2019, like obviously when Happiness Begins happened and the reunion of everything, they came to that tour for the first time and saw us perform. And I think that was like the most emotional I've ever been. Um, just like feeling them in the room. One, I never thought it was gonna happen again. And then two, like, that's, you know, that's, that's, that's them there. So I totally, I hear you. You, you and your, your wife have one of the most amazing covers together.

00:17:56

That like kind of went pretty viral.

00:17:57

Oh, that's still the one when we did it.

00:17:59

I'm gonna just pull it up. It's so good.

00:18:00

Oh, good.

00:18:01

I'm gonna pull it up and I'm gonna literally just show our viewers here. Let's, let's show it. If the football career doesn't work out.

00:18:09

Right.

00:18:10

Right, right, right.

00:18:11

Smooth, bro.

00:18:16

All right, now I gotta ask, how did you guys meet?

00:18:19

She was working with this guy, um, Arsenio Archer. He's a dear buddy of mine and we went to high school together and he's a producer. He's done a lot of cool stuff, man. It's one of my best pals. And we were at my studio in Atlanta. This was 4 or 5 years ago now. And so he was like, you gotta listen to this girl. I've been working with this girl, Raish, and showed me a video or their song they did. And so then I looked her up and I was like, whoa. And I just kind of reached out and was like, hey, I love you. You're amazing. And then we kind of stayed in touch, watched each other from afar. But it was actually a friend of hers, roommate of hers was like, was a big fan of me. And so she was like, hey, I see that you're coming to town for a show in Atlanta. And it'd make my girlfriend pumped if we could come see the show. So they came and then I was like, you know, feeling myself. What was your go-to?

00:19:18

What's your move? What was your move?

00:19:21

We had this little after party the vinyl.

00:19:23

And yeah, but also right off stage too, you're like, you always feel like, you know, yeah, person of interest, POI in the audience.

00:19:35

Yeah, actually, let's just talk about this real quick because we've had this conversation many times. Yeah, about, you know, back in, in the day when I was single, been married now for almost 8 years, and, and Joe, you know, been dating and all that. When you invite somebody to the show, a POI, a POI, POI, And after they try to do like the playing it cool thing, they're just like, oh, it was cool.

00:19:55

Missed opportunity. Don't do that.

00:19:57

I don't want you to be like, it was amazing. It was just some—

00:20:00

if I ask you how the show was— I didn't know any of the music, but like, it was great.

00:20:03

You're cooked.

00:20:04

You're cooked. Yeah, you don't gotta— you don't gotta—

00:20:06

I remember there's this girl I invited to a show in Paris and she was texting on her phone backstage and I was like, hey, like, so like, what did you think? And I was like, did— and I internally, I'm like, did you just ask her what you thought of the show? Cooked. Anyway, I don't mean to be like super fancy.

00:20:28

To be clear, don't play it cool before someone clips this and goes, oh, they just want them to come in and be like all excited. It's like, no, we don't need— it doesn't need to be like that.

00:20:36

I don't have to give her a super fan.

00:20:37

It was a game changer when my wife came to the show. She was just so supportive.

00:20:39

That's what I'm saying.

00:20:41

I was like, That's amazing. Like, she was really invested in this thing that I care so deeply about with me.

00:20:46

That's what I'm saying. And I—

00:20:47

that's, that's what we're saying.

00:20:48

There's a, there's a line of playing it too cool.

00:20:50

Yeah, dude, I, I get this all the time. Well, for me, I think it's so much of like, not, not even just a POI at the show, but I love that, by the way.

00:20:58

That is so good.

00:20:59

But just in general, when I like— I do— this is one of my like worst, worst situations has ever happened to me as far as like meeting somebody in like an airport, right? Uh, I met this guy and he comes over, he's like, hey Teddy, come here, man. I'm like, what's up, brother? And he He said, uh, so man, my foreman at work, she's an older lady, man, she loves your stuff. And he said like, don't get me wrong, man, like I don't fuck with your stuff at all. Like, I listen to like Chief Keef and like Kendrick Lamar and like hip-hop and stuff, so I really don't fuck with you. But like, would you mind if we got a picture for her? And I was like, bro, I don't know what it is about men sometimes too where they're just scared to like anything. It's like, makes you like—

00:21:35

well, it's like, it makes you a masculine way to like things. I wouldn't even know wear if my wife didn't pick out my clothes. It's like, dude, it's okay to like clothes. It's okay to dress yourself nicely.

00:21:47

Why has it got to be so— why do men have to be so—

00:21:49

yeah, it's like, can you take a— you sign this for my sister? It's like, sure. It's like, what's her name?

00:21:58

He's like, Brad.

00:22:00

Yeah, I think we, we have that same experience, especially growing up. Like, this, this was always blew our minds was like, for us, you know, growing up as sports fans, and we would go to these, you know, and I get it, you know, we're now, we get it more, but like, we were like a, a quote-unquote boy band. We played our instruments and wrote our songs, but like, we'd go to these, go to the, whether we're on the sidelines of a game and like get on the Jumbotron, it's like, boo! And we were like, bro, I also love this team. Exactly. I'm here because I love you.

00:22:34

Yeah, that's so weird, man.

00:22:35

But I mean, it doesn't happen as much anymore. I think people aged out of that or Audience have like, or the guys that have, but it is funny. Everyone's gonna be like, yo, I'm, I'm not a fan, but my cousin loves y'all. Can I get a pic? I find that hilarious. But anyway, back to your story. She was backstage.

00:22:50

Oh yeah. Yeah. And you know, I mean, we just, you know, I'm like, I did my little thing.

00:22:54

Boom. There you go.

00:22:55

Done.

00:22:58

How can you not shit?

00:22:59

You know what I'm saying? The rest is history.

00:23:05

I love that for you.

00:23:06

Yeah, bro.

00:23:07

Um, all right. We have a few questions. From some of our incredible listeners here.

00:23:11

Okay, the first one is, is kind of—

00:23:14

I didn't even know this, that— well, I'll just ask the question. Uh, Teddy, Lose Control was featured in the latest season of Bridgerton during a very steamy scene.

00:23:22

I watched it.

00:23:23

And Nick, Jealous was featured in Bridgerton season 3 too. These questions are for all of you. First, what Jonas Brothers song deserves the Bridgerton treatment?

00:23:31

What's your favorite use of a song in a TV show or movie? I think Teddy gave Look Me in the Eyes Virginity at 15.

00:23:38

Yeah, he definitely did.

00:23:40

Yeah. Was Jealous— is steamy in that show?

00:23:43

I don't think so. I think it was like—

00:23:44

I haven't seen it, so it was a dance, it was a sequence, and it was a dance.

00:23:47

It was like—

00:23:47

it was during a ball. It was a stream version. It's great.

00:23:52

Well, then I think— well, they had sex during My Song, so I think I won.

00:23:55

They're like in a bathtub. You won that one. Yeah, they're like all up in a bathtub, like getting it in, bro.

00:24:01

Well, I think it was like It also was like, it was like a string quartet.

00:24:05

Yeah, everything like that rendition. It's actually cool, kind of. I listened to the— I'd like to just see— fell into this because we share a Spotify account, me and my wife and our family.

00:24:13

Sure.

00:24:14

And it like fell.

00:24:14

Sure.

00:24:15

There's, there is a lot of that.

00:24:17

I don't listen to my— I don't dress myself, Kev. It's okay.

00:24:20

Wow. It's okay, you can have a Spotify.

00:24:25

Eat your words.

00:24:26

Yes, exactly. Um, I got the Bridgerton soundtrack while I was sleeping on a plane randomly. I was like, this is actually fantastic.

00:24:34

Yeah, okay, see, there you go.

00:24:36

You could like it too. You can like it too, Kev. I'd like to see Bridgerton Year 3000, the sexualized Year 3000 version. Um, okay, next question. Oh, what is your favorite use of a song in a TV show or a movie?

00:24:50

Like, like any song?

00:24:52

I mean, that's the question. That's what they're—

00:24:53

I think they're referring to his in a TV show.

00:24:55

My song? I don't know, because I, I find like You sync a lot. Yeah, but I find with like, so they just did like the, uh, you know, the new version of Man on Fire.

00:25:04

Yeah.

00:25:05

Oh right.

00:25:05

And, and so when they sent over the, uh, the like the trailer of it, and then like, you know, they where they kind of do the thing where they cut your song up and they just put it in places in between like cuts of scenes.

00:25:16

Yeah.

00:25:16

And it's got these big explosions. And so I find myself trying to get into the, the trailer of it and I'm in the world and then I hear like You know, no, I don't know my— and I was like, that just kind of takes me out of the world altogether, you know, because I feel so close to that that I— if I'm trying to get into another world of something else, it can—

00:25:36

it can—

00:25:36

yeah, it pulls me so far out of the, the environment or the, like, the world of the song.

00:25:40

It pulled me in, so I liked it.

00:25:42

Right. I'm sure you've— I've probably felt that, like, too, when y'all's stuff is on something. Does it, like, completely, like, pull you out of the fucking— I mean, it's an honor, obviously, but, you know, it's— it just pulls me out of the world altogether.

00:25:53

Cake by the Ocean had a couple interesting Sinks.

00:25:56

It's like the most sync song like ever.

00:25:57

I don't think ever. We're talking, we're talking Teddy Swims right now. It was really funny though because, um, I would see it for like songs that get the Kids Bop treatment. You're like, that they— well, I guess this— I don't know if they know what they're singing, dude.

00:26:13

I remember they had the, uh, the Hot Tamales, I'm Sweating. That's back in the day, all gold everything.

00:26:20

Yes, that's so funny.

00:26:22

But I think, I think probably the most, uh, sync song I would probably put my my chip on would be like Spandau Ballet. That's always like when somebody falls in love and that thing, like the love interest is in and it's, "Bum bum bum bum bum, I notice." That one I feel like I've heard so many times in movies.

00:26:42

Oh, absolutely. So Teddy, we have this fun thing in our pod where we have a bowl of questions. We don't know what they are. Will you just pull a question?

00:26:50

Yeah, sure. Let's get deep. Sometimes deep. I mean into the bowl, not like deep into the question.

00:26:56

Or both.

00:26:57

Yeah. If your phone battery is at 2% and you can only text one person, who gets the text? Probably Claire, my assistant. I'll be like, hey, do you know where my phone charger is?

00:27:07

You got that external battery unlocked?

00:27:09

I respect it. Because instead of being like, I'm going to text my wife, you're saying goodbye. It's like, yo, where's my phone charger at?

00:27:16

All right, I'm going to text my phone. I was thinking the same thing.

00:27:18

I was like, which one of our security has the phone charger on them in real time?

00:27:22

Okay, I'm going to pull one for you, Teddy.

00:27:24

Okay, buddy. What you got?

00:27:27

When's the last time you had to plunge a toilet?

00:27:30

Damn. I don't know. I will answer it like this.

00:27:34

Oh God.

00:27:35

Sorry. I can't remember the last time because that's good.

00:27:39

That's good.

00:27:39

I didn't also didn't realize I was an alcoholic until I realized not everybody has chronic diarrhea every morning. You know what I'm saying? So it's not solid enough to really cause a scene. You know what I mean? It's been a while. Get something to check.

00:27:51

Yeah. Maybe just before Coachella because you were drinking for the— for a week or two. Um, okay, well, we also came with a gift for you. Okay, you're how old now?

00:28:02

I'm 33.

00:28:03

Okay, perfect. So I've recently found my old collection of Pokémon cards.

00:28:08

Yeah, okay, I've been seeing you collect someone.

00:28:11

Yeah, and I've been posting, uh, annoyingly a lot, but I'm going for it. And we brought you a gift that we thought we could open here with you. This is the 1999— damn, 1999 sealed pack, booster pack. There's 11 cards in here. This is our gift to you because we love you.

00:28:30

We're gonna rip it live.

00:28:31

We figured we'd rip it live if you're down.

00:28:33

Where did you get this?

00:28:35

He bought it.

00:28:36

My dealer. And we figured—

00:28:38

that's how it says—

00:28:41

we figured, figured, let's, let's, let's see what you get. Okay, whatever you pull is yours, and hopefully you pull Charizard.

00:28:47

You know, I'm not a collector these days, so if there's anything worth it, damn it, sure is, buddy.

00:28:51

Nah, it's yours, son.

00:28:52

Okay, we got a Koffing.

00:28:55

Koffing, that's good. Here, I'll hold the ones for you.

00:28:57

You got a Koffing.

00:28:57

We got a Voltorb.

00:28:59

Oh, okay. Oh, this might— I haven't seen this pack yet.

00:29:02

Bill trainer.

00:29:03

We love, we love a trainer card early, Joe.

00:29:05

Bill. Pidgey.

00:29:07

Pidgey, everybody loves a Pidgey.

00:29:08

There's a lot of Pidgey fans out there.

00:29:09

Sandshrew, that's nice. Okay, we got a Haunter.

00:29:13

A Haunter.

00:29:14

Haunter's good.

00:29:15

Haunters are big.

00:29:16

I don't know if we're gonna get a Holographic.

00:29:18

Well, we'll see.

00:29:18

Pokedex.

00:29:20

Interesting.

00:29:21

A Raticate. Oh, this is a bust, bro.

00:29:24

We got a bust back.

00:29:25

Energy. Energy.

00:29:28

And a trainer card.

00:29:28

Imposter Professor Oak.

00:29:30

There we go. Oh, Imposter. Okay, well, these all still go for cash, so yeah. Okay, we'll get you—

00:29:34

we tried.

00:29:36

We'll get you paid.

00:29:37

How— well, how much was it? Would you mind disclosing how much one of these packs are?

00:29:41

We do some retirement homes.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the Enhanced Games. Some call it grotesque, others say it's unleashing reaching human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

00:30:29

Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.

Jacob Kingston grew up in an isolated polygamous sect.

00:30:46

We were God's chosen kingdom on Earth.

00:30:48

He felt destined for greatness. So when a swaggering Armenian businessman catapults Jacob into an extraordinary world, he doesn't look back.

Ferraris and Lamborghinis, private jets, meeting the president of Turkey.

I'm Michelle McPhee, and this is one of the most shocking criminal conspiracies I've ever come across.

00:31:10

When Jacob met Levon, this went to a billion-dollar fraud.

00:31:14

But with two kings from entirely different worlds, just how long can their empire survive?

00:31:21

The largest tax investigation in American history.

00:31:24

You need to tell me what you know. Is somebody coming after me?

Jacob told Lavon, you're ruining my life.

00:32:34

No, you're here for the AMAs. Yeah.

00:32:36

What is—

00:32:36

what are you performing? What's the plan?

00:32:38

Our song, uh, Mr. Know-It-All.

00:32:39

Hell yeah.

00:32:40

Recently. And then, um, you know, I— we're up for best collaboration, I believe it is, or whatever the verbiage is on that.

00:32:49

But knock on wood.

00:32:50

Yeah, we'll see.

00:32:51

But what's your— what's your take with, with award shows? Do you enjoy them? Do you feel like—

00:32:54

I enjoy them. I think they're a little bit more like, um, nerve-wracking though, you know what I mean? Because like, when you're with that, I feel like you're like those people already like me. Yeah.

00:33:04

And you're like, you're like, damn, that artist I love is sitting down.

00:33:07

Yeah, it's a little bad.

00:33:08

I will say this, I'm pretty sure everyone in the room loves you.

00:33:10

Well, I appreciate that.

00:33:11

You know, you have a lot of love to give. That's one thing I definitely— hats off to you— is that you're— you, um, Teddy Dash Bear is definitely a part of your DNA. And you, um, you're a sweetheart of a person. Genuinely, like, great to be around. The people you have around you too, I think that's, that's key. You know, you meet a lot of people's teams.

00:33:28

I've had the same band since I've been a little kid.

00:33:30

They're awesome.

00:33:31

They rip, man. They're so good.

00:33:32

Oh, you got Remind me your guitar player. He shreds.

00:33:35

Jesse or Addie, which one of the— well, either one of them. They're both great. They're incredible.

00:33:38

Yeah, award shows are interesting. I mean, I feel like sometimes we've had experiences where we look at each other and we'll have a little pep talk. We're like, yo, let's just have fun and let's go up to people and say hi. And I love when people— it's interesting when you disarm people by going up to them. And I know you're like this. You're like, yo, I love this song. I love this movie.

00:33:54

Yeah, I think it's so important to like always say the thing, you know, because I feel like I've even also, you know, to give that guy some slack. I've never been like, I don't fuck with you to somebody, But I definitely get the like, I don't want to bug them thing. Or the also the first thing that comes to my head, like, I don't want to be like, I love you, but what's, what's, why do I do that? You know? And so I try to like just choke that back and be like, I love you, man. I'm such a massive fan. Like it's, everybody would love to hear that.

00:34:22

Right.

00:34:23

You know, that was like my biggest, like lesson to myself when I was younger. I had, we were at a showcase for like Columbia Records back in the day and John Mayer was there. And of course, like to me, That was my acoustic guitar education.

00:34:35

Yeah.

00:34:35

You know, playing 3x5 was like the way I learned that a metaphor in song is like what it was, right? So he was there. I didn't say hi and I regretted it like the biggest. I was like, I'll never do that again. So like my entire existence after that was just like, if I wanted to talk to somebody, I was going to go immediately up to them. So it taught me a good lesson.

00:34:52

I find award shows to be, um, it definitely like the social anxiety gets at an all-time high.

00:35:00

Absolutely.

00:35:00

And I'm, I'm like too conscious of kind of what everyone's thinking. But I think that everyone is doing that. My wife, the other day we were actually at the Oscars and she was presenting and she was kind of stressed about it. I was like, just remember that everybody else here is also stressed about being here, no matter who they are.

00:35:16

Everyone took a while to like— everyone got ready for this. They just rolled in.

00:35:20

No one's eaten all day. Well, there's always like, oh, you're gonna— there's gonna be food when you get there, and then there's never food.

00:35:26

There's like hors d'oeuvres.

00:35:27

Yeah, it's just not enough food. It's like a piece of warm sushi.

00:35:28

Yeah.

00:35:31

Tumus that sat out in the sun all day.

00:35:33

Cheese.

00:35:34

Yeah. It's never enough food.

00:35:36

No, it's not. I chow beforehand, bro.

00:35:39

I mean, also pretty exciting that we're going to be able to perform with you today.

00:35:43

Yes, bro.

00:35:44

I'm so stoked, dude. Technically when this airs, it'll be past sellout. It was so great performing with you.

00:35:49

Oh yeah.

00:35:49

Yeah. A long time coming, man. But it's honestly like such a dream. And we spoke about it. I was like, literally, I was like, I could show, like, we have to get you at our show now. And we were trying a few times because our tours weren't lining up. You love touring.

00:36:02

Dude, I do. Yeah, I do. I don't ever say I don't.

00:36:05

Do you find yourself now more like the finish line is just getting home?

00:36:09

Yeah, I think—

00:36:10

Because with the little one, it's always tough.

00:36:12

How do you stay consistent? Like, what is your routine that keeps you like healthy on the road?

00:36:16

Man, cardio. Like, I've been doing— I got into boxing about a year ago.

00:36:21

Oh, that's great.

00:36:21

And that's like been like something that's really— Cardio is always good. Try to get steam, bro. Steam is like— I love steam. You know, I think the beautiful thing is like—

00:36:29

Especially out here in the desert.

00:36:30

Yeah, well, it— But so Really, it's acid reflux and steam are the only things that actually touch the vocal cords. So, you know, when you're like swallowing tea or whatever, your little tongue lays over your vocal cords, so that helps the throat. But the only things that really hydrate the vocal cords is steam. So it's, it's steam room.

00:36:47

Is— do you use that? One of those things?

00:36:49

I didn't know that.

00:36:50

Yeah, you have one of those things, Joe, that like—

00:36:51

I do.

00:36:51

Yeah, it's, it's the best, dude.

00:36:54

That's awesome.

00:36:56

Like the vaporizer.

00:36:56

The vaporizer thing. Yeah, your, your stage bong.

00:37:00

That's stage bomb.

00:37:00

I don't think it's a real thing, but I will say that I heard that Amy Grant, the icon Amy Grant, used to eat Lay's potato chips before she sings.

00:37:07

I've heard that.

00:37:08

Yeah, it's like glycerin to the throat. And it actually—

00:37:10

I've done it, it does work. It might just be a placebo thing, but I think it's great.

00:37:15

She knows what she's— she can sing.

00:37:16

Also, tequila helps as well.

00:37:18

Oh yeah, I've said— I do. Have you ever had to— I mean, I'm sure you guys like had to drink before a show.

00:37:22

We've had to do that.

00:37:25

Yeah, but ever had to have the fucking rock dog Colman give you the B12, bro?

00:37:30

Oh, we've had—

00:37:30

we've had— my pee smelled very like intense the other day, and we were in the bathroom, um, right before the show, and Nick's like, whoa, something's—

00:37:39

I'm like, oh, just to be clear, we weren't like in the bathroom together. It was like a urinal.

00:37:43

There's like multiple stalls. We were flying.

00:37:47

We were flying, just crossing swords.

00:37:50

Oh, okay. You guys still take baths together like 5-year-olds?

00:37:53

And we still live in the same The fire pole, actually.

00:37:56

Yeah, but yeah, it's B12.

00:38:00

B12 will do that too.

00:38:01

Yeah, dude, it's, it's, it's, it's like the perfect band-aid. I know they'll always be like, you know, don't go too hard because it's just a temporary band-aid, but I mean, still just going over.

00:38:10

Do you have any, uh, like any show rituals, or there's certain things that they're like superstitious about before you go on?

00:38:17

Yeah, well, so we, we all like— when I was in high school, my, um my theater teacher had taught us, like, he'd always, like, do, like, a pinky almost kind of thing with everybody.

00:38:27

And so, like, I noticed that with the— you sing with your wife, is that part of that?

00:38:31

Well, not that, but before show we all do that. And so we all, like— and, and now, like, every one of us has added, like, our own kind of, kind of secret handshake to it too. So now there's, like, all of us have, like, 70 of them that we're doing, like, prior to a show.

00:38:44

3 hours.

00:38:45

It takes 3 hours. Yeah, it's It's like a 20-minute ordeal.

00:38:47

It's on the day sheet. It's like a pre-show, um, dabs ups.

00:38:51

So we're all doing— and I, I always find that like, you know, if, if something ever goes wrong, I blame it on like, oh, I missed that person, you know, which, which is like— which never— it probably isn't the case, but I, I think, I think I'm like, it's, it's— I, I find that I can't recover as well after like a mistake if I have— then that just stays in my mind.

00:39:11

Interesting.

00:39:12

You mean you're I will say, like, live, you are going. Your vocal range is so impressive.

00:39:18

Yeah, I was screaming.

00:39:19

How do you, like, so how do you keep— when you have 3, 4 shows back, like, right now we're— we just got off a Vegas run. We did 4 nights, but we had 1 day off, but it's 3 shows in a row in the Vegas, you know, it's just dry out here.

00:39:30

How do you keep—

00:39:31

how do you keep yourself going?

00:39:32

We try, we try not to—

00:39:33

you got the steam, but yeah, we try not to do that. Do you build the setlist to make sure it happens?

00:39:37

Like, yeah, I mean, sometimes I'll, like, maybe pull a song that's you know, like, I'm not doing that tonight, that's not happening. Or like, you know, like, but I, I, we haven't done like, like, I, I won't do a tour with like, because I remember when we first started touring, it was like we do these like 6 in a rows and shit, you know what I mean? And these like, yeah, small clubs and just screaming at the top of my lungs for an hour and a half. And, and I, I went through a phase where I didn't have a fall setup for like 2 and a half years. I really just, it was so cooked. And it wasn't until we finally like, uh, when when my son was born, I took like a month off and just was there for that whole situation. And so it came back and I recovered and I was like, ah. But I had not stopped toured until for like 4 years. And I just didn't have— my falsetto would be the first thing to go every time I'd get out on the road. And then it was gone for literally almost 3 years.

00:40:29

I just couldn't do anything falsetto-wise. And so then I was overcorrecting screaming some of those notes and only causing further damage. And so I just, yeah, I try, we try our best now to schedule more off days and stuff. And like, if we're doing a tour, I'm like, I'm not doing 3 in a row, are just so brutal.

00:40:49

Yeah, we're definitely looking at how we tour and like how we keep home life more stable.

00:40:54

And I mean, we've been talking, we're, uh, a Teddy Jonas tour's gotta happen. Yeah, it's gotta happen.

00:40:59

Another podcast from some SNL late night comedy guy. Not quite. On Humor Me with Robert Smigel Friends, me and hilarious guests from Bob Odenkirk to David Letterman help make you funnier. This week, my guests, SNL's Mikey Day and head writer Streeter Seidel, help an a cappella band with their between-songs banter.

00:41:44

Where does your group perform?

00:41:45

We do some retirement homes.

Imagine an Olympics where doping is not only legal but encouraged. It's the Enhanced Games. Some call it grotesque, others say it's unleashing human potential. Either way, the podcast Superhuman documented it all, embedded in the games and with the athletes for a full year.

00:42:48

Within probably 10 days, I'd put on 10 pounds. I was having trouble stopping the muscle growth.
