Because let's be real, if you are hiring people based solely on their perfectly formatted resumes and their rehearsed interview answers, you are going to end up with a team of average order takers. Let's break down how to hunt for true operators. First, realize that traditional hiring metrics are completely broken. Too many founders look for a specific college degree or 5 years of corporate experience. That is the wrong filter.
Corporate experience usually just means they know how to hide in a large department and avoid accountability. You are running a fast-paced, aggressive growth company. You do not need someone who knows how to attend meetings. You need someone who knows how to solve unprecedented problems. Whether you are hiring a media buyer or an operations manager, you need grit, not just polish.
If you hire for the resume, you kill your innovation. Second, you have to test their capacity for chaos. People can fake enthusiasm for 30 minutes in an interview, but they cannot fake resourcefulness under pressure. So instead of asking where they see themselves in 5 years, give them a massive, broken operational problem from your actual business and ask how they would fix it by tomorrow. Make their ability to think on their feet the ultimate hiring requirement.
Lastly, When you locate true eagles, you have to pay them and get out of their way. Elite talent does not want to be micromanaged. They want a target and the autonomy to hit it. Supreme talent acquisition, performance-based incentives, and a culture of extreme ownership create an uncatchable organization. When you hire the right monsters, they conquer the market for you.
Bottom line: you cannot build a billion-dollar vision with bargain-bin employees. Change the filter, test the grit, and hire the elite. Because when you do, you will scale stronger than ever.
