00:00:57

How you feel about your only correct answer last week being something I gifted you?

00:01:02

I thought that was gross from Ethan, last week's performance.

00:01:04

Like gross behavior?

00:01:05

Just embarrassing for him.

00:01:07

Embarrassing for him because he made it all about himself, or embarrassing for him because he made you look not great?

00:01:12

I looked great.

00:01:14

Physically.

00:01:14

Right.

00:01:15

You looked great.

00:01:16

The embarrassing part was that I didn't wear my Gator hat for the College World Series segment.

00:01:20

Oh my God, this guy. Enough.

00:01:21

Start the show.

00:01:25

Welcome to the Pitch Clock. Here's the pitch: a two-part baseball segment combining a nostalgic baseball trivia game and an interview with an expert. This is the Pitch Clock. Hi everybody! I like that start. I like starting Pitch Clock with that energy.

00:01:44

Yeah.

00:01:44

Hey, welcome back. There's baseball happening. We'll get to our expert momentarily. It is a two-game lead for me as we head into this one. Chris trying to do some damage. Ethan Ethan, what is our trivia game this week?

00:01:56

Guys, it's back. It's your favorite. This is Jeopardy! Welcome back to Pitch Clock Jeopardy, everybody. We've decided to shrink the categories down this week. We only have 4 categories, but we have inserted Final Jeopardy into the proceedings. We will get to that at the very end. It will include a wager. Let's do our categories. We're gonna do some— shake it up a little bit. We're gonna do some pop culture on this week's Jeopardy. So we've got baseball movies, we've got Derek Jeter girlfriends.

00:02:24

My wheelhouse.

00:02:25

I know you guys will this. All right. Uh, Old Faces Final Places is back. And of course everybody's favorite, Who He Play For in MVP. Before we get to Final Jeopardy, I will give you a clue. Final Jeopardy's category is managers.

00:02:40

When we say who he played for in MVP, that of course is MVP Baseball 2005.

00:02:43

Of course.

00:02:44

Jeremy, coming off a W.

00:02:45

Coming off a W in College World Series trivia last week. This is yours.

00:02:49

Let's go Baseball Movies for $200.

00:02:54

That's not how that works.

00:02:56

It's blind. What's the answer?

00:02:58

Bull Durham.

00:03:00

Wow.

00:03:00

The clue was you can argue which of Kevin Costner's baseball movies is more famous, but in this 1988 film, he stars alongside Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins. The answer correctly was Bull Durham.

00:03:14

So that was pretty unbelievable and a very heady play because Chris Cody, the board is now yours.

00:03:20

Double points for that? All right, that's fine.

00:03:21

No, just the 200-point question. But the board is now yours.

00:03:23

Should I try it again?

00:03:23

No.

00:03:25

Here we go.

00:03:26

Same category, $400.

00:03:29

The famous I Am 12 meme. Chris Cody.

00:03:33

Hold on a second. Just for, for making this a bilingual show.

00:03:37

I can't read the rest of the question.

00:03:38

I'm comfortable with what he's done.

00:03:40

Yeah.

00:03:40

But the way that Jeopardy works, we had a long conversation with him.

00:03:44

It's supposed to be, no, not me. Finish reading the question.

00:03:45

You have to let the question be finished out loud. We'll take away my buzzer.

00:03:48

Let's do it again.

00:03:49

The question is the famous I Am 12 meme originated from this 2006 comedy.

00:03:53

Answer the question.

00:03:54

5, 4, 3.

00:03:57

I forgot the name. All right. Drawing a blank.

00:03:59

Jeremy. Benchwarmers.

00:04:00

That is correct. Can we, can we clarify from this moment forward that Ethan needs to be allowed specifically for our audio audience to be able to finish reading the question before we buzz? You're fine. Let's continue on Baseball Movies for $600.

00:04:12

Glover, McConaughey, Danza, and Brody are just some of the names in the all-star cast of this 1994 picture. Jeremy.

00:04:21

That was me.

00:04:22

I got, I got Jeremy.

00:04:23

Awesome. Angels in the Outfield.

00:04:25

That is correct.

00:04:26

Wow.

00:04:27

Jeremy, you want to go keep going? Uh, yeah, let's keep going.

00:04:29

Baseball Movies, $800.

00:04:30

John Goodman starred as this all-time great in a 1992 flick that made less than $20 million.

00:04:37

I don't know the answer to this.

00:04:40

Same.

00:04:41

Okay.

00:04:41

The answer is Babe Ruth.

00:04:43

Uh, final in the category, Alex.

00:04:47

The love interest from this 2011 smash hit also starred as Jenny in Forrest Gump. You guys should know this one.

00:04:54

What movie were you in, Jenny?

00:04:55

A baseball movie.

00:04:56

She was in Moneyball. Robin Wright was in Moneyball.

00:04:58

She was I realize that. I guess speaking of love interests, let's head over to Derek Jeter Girlfriend.

00:05:04

All right, here we go. Now married to an SNL cast member, she played shortstop on SportsNation's iconic Derek Jeter's Dating Diamond graphic. Chris Cody snuck it in.

00:05:15

You couldn't say graphic.

00:05:16

Chris Cody snuck it in.

00:05:18

I mean, I don't know they dated, but I'll just— Scarlett Johansson.

00:05:21

You're an asshole. Scarlett Johansson is correct.

00:05:23

Same category. All right. $400.

00:05:26

Jeter may have missed the World Series in 1997, but he— at least he spent Christmas with this singer.

00:05:33

Jeremy.

00:05:34

Mariah Carey.

00:05:34

That is correct.

00:05:37

One of my very best friends in this industry, man. I got to say that last week with Kelly Sacco, and now I get to say it with Daniel Alvarez. Couldn't be happier to have him here with us. You know him as the man who runs El Extra Base and a frequenter now of the Pitch Clock. Danny, thank you for being here with us this week. And I want to start with a team not the Marlins who you cover, but a team in their division, in the Atlanta Braves. I feel like I have done a very poor job of talking about how great the Braves have been all season long, led by their variety of superstars. Ronald Acuña Jr. injured at the moment. But Danny, tell us about how great these Braves have been and why they've been able to be so elite this season.

00:06:25

Well, thank you. Thank you for having me once again. My favorite part about this is that you are the, the American broadcaster, announcer, podcaster, whatever, that pronounces Alex Travas in the best possible way.

00:06:38

Okay.

00:06:39

And I love that.

00:06:40

That could not— that could not make me happier, Danny. I— that is like going to carry me now for weeks. I'm going to clip that. I'm going to show it to Dan. I feel incredible about that. So thank you.

00:06:51

Yeah, no, that's, that's an amazing part. But yeah, going to the Braves, man, it's about culture, having elite players, being able to develop players, and being able to have depth. Because what the Braves are doing without Ronald Acuña, um, for the majority of time, because unfortunately he's been really hurt, and also Austin Riley not being nearly as good as the player that he's shown in the past. Yeah, it's something, uh, quite remarkable. But when you see this bullpen with how good Ray Selye Iglesias is in the ninth inning. You have Robert Suárez, who is an all-star setup closer reliever as well, and also players like Dylan Lee, who they were very patient with. They also have Didier Fuentes, who's now— I think he's able to, to buy a drink in the United States finally. For Didier, didn't have any success as a starter, but now he's been really good as a reliever, and he's going to be successful as a starter at some point in his career because the guy is really young, but they've been hurt. With their starters as well. So I think this could be a really aggressive team at the deadline going to, to pick up maybe one or two or two starters because they have everything to go and beat anybody in a short series in October.

00:08:10

That bullpen is always going to be the key come October. And you're right, it's one of the most elite position groups that we have in all of Major League Baseball right now. But I actually— you brought it up yourself, the trade deadline. I want to go there with you. Who's a name that you're looking at across Major League Baseball that you want to sort of tell our audience to kind of keep their eye on as we, you know, now sit about a month away from that baseball trade deadline?

00:08:36

With the Braves, just imagine if to that bullpen they had someone like Aroldis Chapman, for example. Oh, come on. But just imagine if that happens. So Chapman, of course, I think he will be someone interesting for, for any team. You think about a team like the Tampa Bay Rays who have been really good in the, in the AL East, that they always find a way to, to compete. But if they add they add a reliever to that back end of the bullpen, I think it's going to be a very dangerous team. Obviously Luis Arraez is a name that I'm going to be following a lot.

00:09:06

Always, by the way, always.

00:09:09

And I think about probably the Athletics. I mean, what could they do with a second baseman like Luis? Because that's the best part about, about his game right now. Not, not only his offense, he's playing a ridiculous second base. Yep. Maybe a team like the Dodgers. I mean, they have a— oh, revolving during second base with Alex Freeland, with Miguel Rojas, with Hyun Kim. If they add Luis Arraez to that lineup hitting, it doesn't have to be on the top of the order. He could be 6th or 7th. I hate doing this. Yeah, of course I have to, but he's always going to find people on base, you know. So I think that's going to be really, really interesting. And watching— I was watching for some reason a bunch of Twins games last week and Joe Ryan. I think it's going to be another interesting big name. Why not? He could be a starter that someone adds in this summer. Why not the Toronto Blue Jays, who I think might be very aggressive going for starting pitching?

00:10:06

Derek Jeter girlfriends for $600, Ethan.

00:10:09

She dropped Jason Street and Tim Riggins to spend 3 years with Jeter at the end of the 2000s.

00:10:16

I mean, I know some of his girlfriends, so I'll just take a— Jessica Biel.

00:10:20

That is incorrect. Jeremy, you want to take a stab?

00:10:24

Stick with the Jessica category. Jessica Alba.

00:10:25

That is also incorrect.

00:10:27

We keep going.

00:10:27

The answer here is Minka Kelly.

00:10:29

Derek Jeter girlfriends for $800.

00:10:32

There is a more famous actress with the same first name on Jeter's dating diamond, but their relationship still made big headlines when they were spotted together in Puerto Rico in 2006. Jeremy.

00:10:45

Jessica Alba. No, no.

00:10:46

Chris Cody.

00:10:48

Jessica Biel.

00:10:49

That is correct.

00:10:50

This is just a subjective fame. Jessica Alba is more famous than That's a good deal. Come on. All right, we'll do $1,000.

00:10:56

We'll finish this one here.

00:10:57

I know things about pop culture.

00:10:58

A staple of the Fast and Furious franchise, she held it down at first base on Jeter's dating diamond. Bump, bump, bump.

00:11:08

This is, this is when the pitch clock really misses Billy.

00:11:10

Jordana Brewster.

00:11:11

I was going to say Adriana Lima.

00:11:13

Chris Cody, the board remains yours.

00:11:17

We'll go Who We Play For for $200.

00:11:19

Okay. Who did Morgan Ensberg play for in MVP Baseball 2005?

00:11:24

So you do this thing where you show. Yeah.

00:11:27

Damn it.

00:11:29

You heard Cody. That is correct.

00:11:30

Yeah, I, I—

00:11:31

You're such an asshole.

00:11:32

All right, just for the audio audience, he was sitting there in an Astros uniform and we both just went, hmm.

00:11:38

Ethan does this thing where he puts a photo up of him, but like, I guess to his point, like, you don't know.

00:11:43

It could be.

00:11:43

That's the fun of it. Chris Cody, where would you like to go?

00:11:46

$400.

00:11:47

Okay. Jason Marquis, where did he play in 2005? Jeremy Taché.

00:11:53

This is crazy.

00:11:53

Oh, okay, it was Chris Cody.

00:11:55

I mean, we can give it to Chris.

00:11:56

You heard it.

00:11:56

I saw, I saw it happen. I do think Chris Cody finish 2005, but I also get that was a, you know, it wasn't worded on the board.

00:12:03

Cardinals.

00:12:04

That is correct. Yeah, Chris Cody takes the lead now at $1,800 to $1,400. The board remains yours.

00:12:10

Old Faces, New Places, $200. I just like to mess with you.

00:12:14

Where did Larry Walker finish his career? Chris Cody.

00:12:18

Cardinals.

00:12:19

That is correct. Same.

00:12:20

$400. Yep.

00:12:21

Greg Maddux, who did he finish his career with? Jeremy.

00:12:25

The Giants.

00:12:28

That is incorrect.

00:12:29

Chris Cody.

00:12:30

That is also incorrect.

00:12:31

That's where he started his career.

00:12:32

Oh, wait.

00:12:32

The Los Angeles Dodgers.

00:12:33

Yeah, it was the Dodgers. I knew, I remembered that he went West Coast, but I just couldn't picture him in another uniform.

00:12:39

That was dumb.

00:12:40

Cubs was dumb.

00:12:40

Chris Cody, the board is yours.

00:12:41

$600, Old Faces Final Places.

00:12:43

Where did Randy Johnson finish his career? Jeremy.

00:12:47

The New York Yankees.

00:12:48

That is incorrect.

00:12:49

Astros?

00:12:49

That is also incorrect. The answer is the San Francisco Giants. Maddux. So Jeremy clearly confused Greg Maddux with Randy Johnson.

00:12:56

This is exactly what just happened. Yeah, the end of a legend's career, right around the same time one of them—

00:13:02

Old Faces, final places, $800.

00:13:05

Where did Cole Hamels finish his career? Chris Cody.

00:13:10

Rangers.

00:13:11

That is incorrect.

00:13:12

That's where he started his career. No, no, he went there after the Phillies, then Rangers. I mean, I guess I'll I mean, yeah, I, yeah, dude, Blue Jays. No, that is nothing.

00:13:26

The Atlanta Braves.

00:13:27

Same thing, $1,000.

00:13:29

Where did Dan Uggla finish his career? Chris Cody.

00:13:33

The Marlins.

00:13:34

That is incorrect. Jeremy, would you like to take a stab?

00:13:37

I might.

00:13:38

Was it the Braves?

00:13:40

Nope, but it was in the division. It was the Washington Nationals, and he was a Brave at one point.

00:13:44

Wow.

00:13:44

Us. All right, so we'll finish it out. We'll go straight through who he played for before we get to final.

00:13:50

So we don't get to pick which order?

00:13:52

Pick the order.

00:13:53

Okay, go ahead. Who he played for? Armando Benitez in 2005.

00:14:02

Jeremy Toshay.

00:14:02

Nope.

00:14:03

No.

00:14:05

Mets.

00:14:06

Incorrect.

00:14:07

No, it's the Giants.

00:14:08

San Francisco.

00:14:08

We both immediately $1,000.

00:14:11

Where did Sammy Sosa play in MVP Baseball 2005?

00:14:16

Jeremy.

00:14:18

Ooh, Orioles.

00:14:21

Yes.

00:14:21

Yep.

00:14:22

That is correct.

00:14:23

Wow.

00:14:24

$800 with Jeremy leading $2,400 to $2,800 to $2,000. And remember, Final Jeopardy! is still in play. Where did Vinny Castillo play in MVP Baseball 2005? Rockies? Nope.

00:14:41

The Braves.

00:14:42

That is incorrect. He was a Washington National.

00:14:46

Kelly told us all last week about how they've gotten here, about the All-Stars, about what's changed over the last month or so. But my question is, looking forward, like, are you and I going to be sitting here having a conversation come September with the Marlins still in the thick of a wildcard race? And if so, Why?

00:15:05

I love that you asked me this question in 2023 and I said yes. And my answer is going to be yes for, for this. Why? Because I think this is a team that learned how to play together, found their identity. I think it's very fitting the way they've been calling him all year long with the fighting fish and the half second and all of that. This team can complicate anybody because they put the ball in play. They're really athletic and they do a lot of damage on the bases. Yes, they sometimes they can be overaggressive, but That's— I mean, you want to see that rather than just not going for it, you know. Yes, they play good defense, they have good arms. Eury Peréz is coming back, and I think they're in a position to add one or two pieces within the organization or from outside. And I think that's going to send the right message to the players and to the fan base as well.

00:15:55

Oh, it'll be so awesome. I'm starting to get dreams of hosting a game at Lone Depot Park for a postseason game.

00:16:01

Imagine you being the first host.

00:16:03

Oh, Don't even—

00:16:04

I'm all set.

00:16:05

I will start. Why not? You want— I don't know if you can see it on the camera. I have full body chills thinking about it. Okay, real quick, real quick. We're going through our Star of the Week here. So I want you to pick here from Pico Armstrong, who's really turned his season around here in June. One of my favorite players here in Nick Kurtz. He's been spectacular for the Athletics. And then Jack Caglione, another big power hitter who's having a tremendous June and is really starting to put it together.

00:16:32

I want to pick Jack Haglione for— because we're finally seeing what we were told about this guy and everything that he did at UF. And it's— he's just insane. It's not easy to go oppo several times with no doubters at Kauffman Stadium. That's just not easy to do. Like, it's one of the toughest ballparks to hit the ball out. And the way he's been playing offensively and defensively as well, You know, taking that next step for that Royals team that has been really struggling this year. It's been very special to watch. I have to say, he was one of the guys that I mentioned when we talk about Team Italy before the WBC.

00:17:16

Yeah, you did. I like that. I love Danny that you show up here with receipts every time you're here. It's, hey, you know what? I told you this. This happened. I told you this. This happened. And it should be that way because Danny, you are one of the very best in the game when it comes to analysis. Analysis. We appreciate you being here. I also appreciate that Ethan Bedowski was not listening to you praise a Florida Gator. Thank you, Danny. We will see you here soon, my friend.

00:17:43

So here we are.

00:17:44

We're at Final Jeopardy.

00:17:47

2,400 to 2,000.

00:17:48

That's me with the lead.

00:17:49

Yes. You're going to write your wager down. Olivia is going to deliver me the wagers.

00:17:54

There's a strategy to this.

00:17:55

There is.

00:17:57

The category is managers.

00:17:58

Okay. The category is managers.

00:18:00

Yes.

00:18:00

Okay. All right.

00:18:01

Here's the question.

00:18:04

Famous for ripping heaters in the dugout during his time with the Marlins and Tigers, Jim Leland's stints with these two teams are less well known. I won't lie. These are tough.

00:18:16

Yeah, this is tough. I know one of them.

00:18:17

One of them.

00:18:18

If you, right. I'll give you half credit. Like I'll give you, if you wager, let's say you wager $2,000. I'll give you $1,000 if you get one of them right. We'll go with Jeremy first since he's in the lead. Jeremy has wagered. Wagered $1,601. Chris Cody has wagered $500.

00:18:36

Oh, bad news for Jeremy.

00:18:39

Chris Cody wrote down the Padres, which is incorrect, and the Pirates. I also put White Sox, which is correct.

00:18:47

I know it was Pirates.

00:18:48

The Pirates is correct. Chris Cody has won $250 for his answer.

00:18:53

I agree with me and you.

00:18:54

He is up to $2,250.

00:18:56

Bad strategy.

00:18:56

Now again, Jeremy has wagered $1,601.

00:19:00

I'm gonna get one.

00:19:02

Jeremy has written down the Astros.

00:19:04

That is right.

00:19:05

Which is incorrect. The Rockies are right. But the Rockies are there and the Rockies are correct. Are correct.

00:19:12

That is.

00:19:12

So Jeremy has won $800.

00:19:14

Which means I win.

00:19:15

And 50 cents.

00:19:17

Why are we—

00:19:17

Which means that Jeremy has won $300.

00:19:20

You knew he was the Rockies. Rockies.

00:19:21

$3,200.

00:19:23

That was what I thought, but I thought I started overthinking.

00:19:26

$3,250 to $2,250. Jeremy is this week's winner of Pitch Clock Jeopardy.

00:19:33

Thank you, gentlemen. Thank you very much.
