Sometimes you can do nothing wrong defensively and still get scored against. And that's what happens with the Nashville Predators when Matthew Kuchuk scores on Thursday night to make it 2-0 for the Panthers. So let's get into this NHL Edge breakdown. So Balinski starts with a breakout behind the net. He sends the puck up along the boards. And what happens here is Roman Yosey, one of the best defensemen on planet Earth, is standing there waiting to play the puck off of the boards. And it just takes awkward bounce there. It takes a weird bounce off the boards, and it hits him, and it goes to the middle of the ice. He's not passing the puck there to no one directly to the Panthers. He is simply getting the puck bounce off of him and off of his skate, and it ends up right in the middle of the ice, right to Carter Verheggi. Thankfully for Matthew Kuchuk here, he's doing the right thing by trying to play the buck just in case it goes by Yosey, he's going to be in position. But then when it lands and Verheggi gets it right in the middle of the ice.

He's ready. He's already starting his breakout, and now he is the one leading the Russian. Who does he have one-on-one? Another great defenseman, Braedee Shay, who makes a terrific play here because he blocks the shot. He did nothing wrong. He gets down, makes a nice little block on the shot. But because sometimes it's better to be lucky than good, the Florida Panthers get the rebound because Carter Verhagey is right there and the block shot just ends up dribbling back to K'Chuck and Verhagey who do a little dipsy-doodle. And K'Chuck is the one who ends up with the puck and just puts it in the back of the net. As I keep saying, sometimes it's better to be lucky than good. And in this instance, the Florida Panthers are very lucky because Nashville is just the recipient of the game of hockey being played on an ice surface where a rubber disk is just meant to bounce around. And this puck gives them zero luck. And Florida always in the right position, who always seems to be in the right position to capitalize on lucky bounces, does the right thing, capitalize on it. And there's Matthew Kachuk celebrating his goal on Thursday.
