Transcript of Toronto Maple Leafs vs New Jersey Devils LIVE w/ Adam Wylde
sdpnPlease please if there is a hockey god out there I just asked the Leafs don't lay an egg tonight against the New Jersey Devils because I don't think that my ego can handle it. And I don't wanna have to explain to a bunch of Devils fans in my DMs the way I needed to explain to a bunch of Penguins fans in my DMs that beating the Leafs is not that big of an accomplishment. Hello, everybody. Welcome. Welcome to the show.
Ah, it's Sheldon Keefe revenge game part 2. I can you believe this? We're already December 10th. Happy Tuesday. I'm so excited that you're here.
For all of you that are here early, I saw you guys going off in the chat, and I was begging, pleading for likes, not because not because we necessarily need them, but it'd be nice. You know, throw throw the throw the video a like. Maybe some people find out. Maybe some people who haven't seen it before, people who have not been exposed to Gripper Nation find out about it. That'd be good.
Listen. We got a we got a great 1 tonight. It's the New Jersey Devils. They're spectacular. They're a great hockey team.
They're coached by the Leafs. Former coach Doesn't get much better than that. And, of course, you know, we got the Toronto Maple Leafs who to be honest with you, didn't have a great week last week. I didn't love their game against Chicago. I definitely didn't love their game against Nashville.
And Pittsburgh and and Washington really kinda let them know, hey. Your hockey is not up to snuff. But, there are some opportunities here tonight because Max Domi, maximum Domi is back tonight. Craig Brube was saying that he's hoping that Max Domi and Nick Robertson shoot more. Specifically, Max Domi, he said, please don't be as selfish.
And I think it's nice when somebody's gotta tell you, hey. Don't be selfish. Shoot a little more. Max does have a good shot. You never see it, but he does have a good shot.
Now, producer Hayden put together some stats, and I gotta read you some of these. Ryan Reeves is tied for the 2nd worst expected goals per 60 among all NHL forwards. He's tied with Gage, gone Gonglaives Gonglaives? I'll be honest with you. I haven't seen Gage play much.
And Dakota Joshua of all people, but he did miss training camp. And he had the the cancer situation, so we're gonna give him a pass on that. Also, did you sign Ryan Reeves for his expected goals? Because if you did, you shouldn't be a general manager. The Leafs are 12, 2, and 1 in their last 15 games against the devils.
That's right. 12, 2, and 1. Remember, the Leafs finished off the Devils' big big win streak a couple years ago. That was fun. I think Matt Murray was a net for that game.
Remember he kept pushing off the post, and the net kept coming off, and it was a little bit sketchy, but we all were like, yeah. No. It's totally normal. The Leafs averaged 4 have averaged 4.66 goals per game in those 15 games that they've played against the Devils the last 15, and the Leafs have surrendered only 2.86 goals per game. Now I would say that that stat is likely going to change.
Scoring 4a half goals, allowing close to 3, I would expect both of those numbers to go down because the Leafs are scoring less this year. They're also defending, like, a whole lot better than they used to. They are not scoring as much. They are definitely not letting in as much. Once Jake McCabe comes back, and boy did they miss him, it's gonna be a whole different story.
The he and Tannen have together probably the best defensive pair in the NHL this year, which is kinda hard to believe that the Leafs have anybody that's even close to that. In the Matthews era, 25% of all Leafs Devils games have gone to overtime. How about that? 6 of the 24 matchups since the 15 16 season, which is kinda crazy when you think about it, considering both teams at varying degrees were not that good. The Leafs have been good for more the majority of that stretch, but then you look at the devils who have had really great years.
You know? I'm talking about the Taylor Hall winning the heart trophy years. And then for, like, 5 years after that were kinda bad, and then 2 years ago they were good, and then last year they were bad. For that many overtime overtimes, it it it tells you they get up for this game. The Leafs haven't lost on the road against the Devils since April 5, 2018.
That was a 2 1 devils win. Man okay. But I forgot he was a devil, but Pat Maroon tallied 2 assists for the devils. And, the Leafs got a goal from William Nylander, Austin Matthews, and Patrick Marleau. I know.
Patrick Marleau was that's 2018. That's 6 years ago. What the hell happened? Why did COVID do this to us? Anthony Stallars is 1 of the 10 active NHL players born inside the state of New Jersey.
Other notable people, James Van Riemstuyck, Ross Colton, Alex Lafreniere or sorry. Laferrrier, and Connor Clifton and the Buffalo Sabers. Now, I hope that you guys are having a fantastic, evening. Robert Betts, favorite things in life, 1, the Leafs, 2, SDPN, 3, Gripper Nation. Thank you, Robert Betts.
And I wanna shout out the squeezable lemon for gifting 20 SDPN memberships. Squeezeable lemon, thank you. We hope that the juice was worth the squeeze. We do appreciate you. And everybody that is trying out, the v I VIP subscriptions for the very first time, let me tell you something.
You're in for a real treat. It's lots of fun. It's pretty sexy. I'm not gonna lie. But what's out what's really cool about it, honestly, is that you get to go back and watch all the other episodes and see if you wanna stick around and be a VIP full time because we would love for you to be a VIP full time.
Pierre Le Dubois, Alex Laferriere is actually better than Alexis Lafreniere. Okay. Well, maybe he is right now because the Rangers stink. Mason Zickman says, no matter who loses tonight, Adam wins. That's right.
Devil's fan, Adam. People are asking, hey. Why don't you wear those pajamas? And I'm like, I don't know where they are. I have lost them.
I have lost them. I know it's bad. It's bad. But you know what? The great thing about the Aaron Andrews collection yeah.
This is the only problem. I know it's around. I got this here. Let's see. The Devils were to play in the playoffs.
You know those p j's would make an appearance. By the way, how are we doing on the likes on the YouTube page? Okay. We got face off here, by the way. We have started the game.
69 likes. We can stop right there. We don't need any more likes. That's a nice number. Good job, chat.
69 likes. Leafs starting this zone this game in their own zone. Pesci just kinda had a a shot that looked bloopish, and it was 1 of those goals that's like that feels like a goal that goes in in the 1st minute. And here we go. The devils have had some really strong pressure to start, Not necessarily with the Leafs would have wanted.
Broggjo@adamild, greetings from Zurich, Switzerland. Go Leafs, go. Yes. Yes. Yes.
Yes. I love international. So if you are, if you are listening, and I I am gonna do a city check-in, we always do, sometime in the first period here. If you're if you're from far away, please, message the chat. We're thrilled to have you along.
It's very, very cool. By the way, 1930 left in the first period for those wanting to sync I'll try to clap around as many face offs as I possibly can to make sure that your stream is aligned with my stream, and we're all watching the same thing at the same time. There's Max Pacheretti behind the Devil's net. Max, who took a couple of not great penalties against the Pittsburgh Penguins. He apparently has this, like, long simmering history with Chris Letang.
They, like, hate each other, and both of Max's penalties were against Chris Letang. I didn't know that. I didn't know they hated each other, but people were bringing up highlights of when Max was playing Montreal and some other teams too. So the Leafs got both Max's back. Oh, it looks like the devils are that's a high stick.
And the devils are just gonna oh, they're gonna blow it dead. So here's the deal. When there is a high stick and no 1 touches the puck, my question is, what side of the blue line are they gonna do the face off on? I'm assuming it's outside. It can't be an offensive zone face off.
Right? Alright, guys. And here's the other thing I need to ask you. K? I need score predictions in the chat right now.
I need to know who you're thinking and who you who you think scores and what the score is at the end of the game. I need game winning goal scored by whomst, expected by whom. There's Steven Lorenz with a nice little chip by I think that's Dougie Hamilton. It is Dougie Hamilton. I'm sorry.
I'm not used to seeing Dougie healthy Dougie Hamilton yet. You know, it's interesting. They were talking to Sheldon Keith today. Jonas Siegel did an interview with him in The Athletic. And Sheldon echoed what I think a lot of people don't like hearing, and I'm 1 of them, is, hey.
The Leafs didn't lose in the playoffs because they couldn't play defense. They lost because they couldn't score. And while that's true, the ape brain in me, the the the the 1 the caveman brain in me wants to say no. They lost because they got physically dominated in most series, which is true, which is probably why they couldn't score. And they did let in a lot of bad goals.
I don't know how many of you guys remember the Freddie Andersen years. 1 day, he would be the greatest goaltender you've ever seen in the playoffs, and the next he'd let in 6 goals. And 3 of them would be in the first 5 minutes of the first period, and you don't know why. K. We're getting a lot of score predictions that are 42 Leafs, 42 Leafs, 52 Leafs, 43 Leafs, lot of Nylander, lot of Nys.
Julian Nikoloff, Leafs are playing in the real NHL, 31 Matthews game winner, Nys empty net. All the worlds of stage said, but their d was horrendous. It was horrendous. It was bad defense. Go look at the the players the Leafs drafted or dressed in the in the in those series.
Some of those series, like Martin Laurentian was playing legitimate minutes on the shorthanded. Like, are we I I think we need to acknowledge that. I think we need to talk about that. There's a there's some therapy there that we need from that. No offense to Marty, but, like, holy moly.
There's a reason why the Leafs had him and then when the Leafs didn't want him anymore, nobody had him. Robert Bet, I'm predicting a 5 3 Leafs win with Domi, has a breakout tonight with a hat trick. Woah. Okay. So Domi has a score to goal all year.
And you're saying a hat trick tonight on his 1st night back. Robert, I appreciate the hope, and that's what brings us together as Leaf fans. I do wanna mention that, we're 17 27 left in the 1st period. So we're about 2 and a half minutes in, and the Leafs have yet to register the Devils have 5 already. They haven't the Leafs have not looked like themselves lately.
Like, they haven't had that swagger. I don't know what's going on. If it's the injuries finally caught up with them, if they're tired, Well, if you're tired too bad, you got 15 games in 31 days in December or better get used to it. You know, what is it? What could it be?
Here comes Matthews across blue line. Nice little play from Marner there. Doesn't really go anywhere. Devil's kinda stop it up along the boards. 1 thing that I'm I'm was very interested in is the fact that Patcharetti was paired right back up with Matthews and Marner, and I think it's because they want a guy who's gonna be throwing some body and, being mean, which Max has embraced the role.
He's a big boy. A lot bigger than I remember. I anyway, long story short, I think, it'll be interesting to see how he does along those 2 along with those 2. Oh, boy. We all oh, just nice little wraparound play there by the Devils, and Staller somehow kept that out or it hit the side of the net.
I couldn't see from this angle. Damn. K. Matthews with the turnaround here. They're gonna change.
SLS, what's up, Adam? Really great to see TSN have the Overdrive guys on the panel today. Wish Sportsnet didn't take themselves too serious. I agree with you on that. I think when they do a a local Leafs game, when Sportsnet's a nonnational game and they put Kipper and Bourne on, Those guys do a great job, with Elliott.
I don't know why they don't have Kipper on on national TV show national TV games anymore. I mean, the guy used to be on Hockey Night in Canada. I don't know why you wouldn't use him. He's a really good broadcaster whether you agree with him or disagree with him. The guy is an eyeball grabber.
I don't understand it, but, you know, I'm not a executive producer at Sportsnet. I'm a a guy who runs a digital podcast network. Anyway, yeah, the Overdrive guys are great. Nice people. Some are the Sportsnet guys.
All the all the on air talent, I don't know anybody too much behind the scenes, but I'll tell you. I I hard to find any of the people on the air at any of those networks that aren't really good people off the camera. I'll say that. Here's Max Domi, making things happen on the offensive side. He's paired right now with Minton and Llorentz.
And, you know, what's gonna be very interesting as guys start to come back is, how do we how do we fit all this? What is this? Frasier Minton is the center of the 3rd line along with Lorentz and Domee, and oh, man. Bastian almost had 1 there too. I, you know, how are you gonna how does this fit together?
It's a bit of an odd 1. Right? Domi technically is a center, although they don't I don't think they thought he was gonna be a center. Hey. The Leafs got a shot.
And guess guess who it was? That's right. Ryan Reeves with the first shot. So you got Holmberg, you got Reeves, and you got Durer on the 4th. It's all gonna kind of fit together like a jigsaw.
I look at, you know, Calle Yarncrook whenever he gets back skating. They're gonna give him, like, 3, 4 weeks of just practicing before they bring him back fully. Get his conditioning up and that sort of thing. But, you know, at that point, what do you do? Do you keep Mitt in there?
Do you is, is is does Dior come out? Does Homburg come out? You'd think not because they play a role. Mitton and Lorenz, I mean, Lorenz has been all energy, all positive vibes all season long. Who comes out for those guys?
And you expect Yarnkrok to come in and be a factor, right, eventually. There are still 4 guys on the IR. Conte, McCabe, Yarnkrok, McMahon. The Leafs are gonna have, some interesting calls to make. Gonna be really interesting.
Alright. Time check is 1415. The Leafs have 1 shot. The Devils have 8 shots. And I'll be honest with you, it's been a little tilted in the devil's favor.
They've come out on fire. And I I, again, I think the Leafs have not had the pop in their skates, the last week. I'd like for them to figure that part of it out. I do wanna throw this out there too. The Boston Bruins are currently 1 point behind the Maple Leafs.
The Boston Bruins who fired their coach a few weeks ago are a point behind the Leafs. Are you kidding me? Come on. Robert Bett, I love Wall, but Stahlers and Net is like a nice warm hug from Nana. Yeah.
I get that. I totally understand that. Stahlers, there's just something about him. He's just really solid. But you know what I love about Joseph Wall is when he's in net more and more now, I'm not thinking about him.
And that's how you know a goalie is pretty good when you just don't have to think too much. Tavares back behind the net. He's got Nies with him. He's got Nielander out there. Boy, at least you're gonna be deep at Ford once all these guys come back.
That's bad TV. Is Austin Matthews legit holding them back? I do not think so. I think they're just a little sluggish at the moment, and they've been a little sloppy in this game. The Devils certainly have their number through 7 minutes.
It's, by the way, 1328 left in the first. Nice little steal from Matt Nies. Devils were able to kinda hold it up. I think they just wanna get a change in here. Bit of a long shift for Tavares and Nys.
And I think Nys is going to the bench. There he goes. Off goes Max Domi looking as fast as ever with a shot. Just a little wide, but he's shooting. He's shooting the puck, and he looks fast.
I like that. He, whatever he did, it must've hurt because he was out for a while. I think he was out for a lot longer, I think, than they thought he would be. Stefan Nason. I think he was a former Leaf.
I'd have to ask Steve that, but I'm pretty sure Stefan Nason was in the Leaf system at 1
point.
Okay. Connor Timmons in the gets worked outworked a little bit by Eric Hollow there. Did I say Eric Hollow? Yeah. I meant Eric Hollow.
It's weird. Eric Hollow, it's like, oh, yeah. You're not a I know it's weird, but you're golden knight. I still see him as a golden knight. I know it's been a long time.
You know what I mean? There are just certain guys who are like, it just doesn't feel right with you not in that jersey. Oh, man. The devils are moving the puck great tonight. Nice little defensive play there by Ryan Reeves to break that up.
That would have been an easy shot for Nathan Bashan who's been a bit of a factor tonight. By the way, the the devils have goal scoring extraordinaire Thomas Tatar on their 4th line. According to our, our poll this evening, the the Leafs have 80% of the of your votes when it comes to who you're cheering for tonight. So not totally surprising. I did expect to see a little bit more, New Jersey Devils in the chat just because we have a funny little relationship with the devils.
But, you know, doctor Nick, good morning, Adam, and chat from, Perth, Western Australia. Gonna be 39 degrees Celsius today. Oh, baby. Honestly, it's, right now, it's raining. Probably somewhere close to 0 degrees here in Toronto.
40 degree difference between our 2 cities. Unreal. How do you watch a game in Perth, Australia anyway? Is it is it YarmAT Plus? What do you guys do?
Daniel Bastarsh says, Stefan Nason ended up in Toronto, in a 3 way deal from San Jose, I believe. Oh, I wonder. Was that the Poulak deal? Was that the Daniel Winnick deal? Was that the James Reimer deal?
There were for a while there, there were some a lot of moves between, Toronto and San Jose, and I think it's because Doug Wilson and Lou Lamoriello worked well together. SLS, can't lie. Not a fan of Patches on the first slide. We'll give Patches some time to get back up to speed. I think that's why they're putting him there.
It's just just, like, give him the best opportunity he can to succeed and get his confidence because remember the guy missed, like, a month and had a pretty nasty injury. And the fact that he's still here and and playing already is a great sign. And I think guys coming off injury, you just can't expect too too much from them right away. You just can't. It's it's such a hard league to be your best at at the best of times, and these guys are all coming back from injury.
It's it's rough. Oh, so you have an ESPN Australia subscription, and that is how you watch. Well, that's crazy. That's so cool. Home Holmesh, YarmAT Plus from Winnipeg.
Shout out regional broadcasting. Yeah. I know. I I I don't understand. I think it's well, I think well, actually, I do understand.
It's because they're worried that Winnipeg won't get as many Jets fans watching if Leaf games became constantly available. I don't know whether that's true or not, but they don't wanna test the theory. So Yarmaiti Plus it is. I'm right I to be honest with you, I'm so personally ready for Bobby McMann to come back. He was such a loss in the playoffs, and I know he had a bit of a tough start to this year, but he was just starting to get going.
Like, really starting to look good. Figure out Baruubay system. 11/24 left in the first. That's an icing for the Leafs. Shots are 9 to 1, New Jersey.
My wife always looks at me when the Leafs look marginally bad and she goes, Adam, I don't like this. And then she just stops talking and stares at the screen until they start to play better, but she's very anxious watching a Leafs game now. And it's funny because she always was a Leaf fan, but watching them as closely as, you know, Steve and Jesse and I have to, there's no hope for our partners. They're they either go to another room or have to watch along with us, and she loves watching. And so she'll she'll look at me and go, like, I don't know.
And And and so when the leaves are playing bad, I can I know that she's probably at home right now lying on the couch and going, I don't I don't know? I don't know if I can watch this. I I'm I'm so glad that she didn't have to be here for the Randy Carlyle years. I don't think she was watching them too much back in those days. I don't think a lot of people were.
Boy, that was bad. There's Tavares to Nylander. Oh, nice little play there to Matt Nies. Man, Matt Nies is always in the right place, isn't he? Picked off by the devils.
You know, the thing is, New Jersey at least through the first 10 minutes here, and we're about 10:35 left, in the first period, They're doing a really great job of stopping the Leafs from getting anything going offensively. Like, they just they'll pin you along the boards. They'll get in your passing lanes. The Leafs can't seem to find any seams right now. They barely can get past the neutral zone.
Taylor Shoma, is your wife Steve? No. But Steve always makes the joke that, he, he married me. Like, his wife and I are very similar. So, yeah, we're very we're very blunt people.
Impassioned, I would say. Yeah. I don't know. We'd have to ask Steve a little more about that. Here's Timmons.
Nice little shot. So look at this. It's the Lorenz, Reeves Lorenz and Reeves are out there together. I don't know if that's just a bad or that the change hasn't happened yet. I don't think it has.
Yeah. So it's like that line it's a it's a low level line getting something going for the Leafs they had the first shot of the game too the only shot the Leafs have had did Adam bet on his favorite player Andre Palat to score tonight I did not because it's not the playoffs. You don't buy Andre Palat for the regular season. You buy Andre Palat for the playoffs. You sign that contract because you're expecting to go 2nd, 3rd, 4th round, and that is that's how you do it.
He's the man for that. Keith, I don't think Sheldon keeps ready. I don't think he understands what he's got. Brock Besser. Demko is back.
RIP to the rest of the league. You know what? I'm happy for the Canucks. I I have a really I have a very warm spot for them now that, you know, I followed them so closely in the playoffs last year, them and the Oilers. It was it was so much fun.
The Canucks are, once JT Miller gets back and once he gets, you know, everything kinda ready to go, the Canucks are great. Like, that's a great hockey team, man. They're gonna be a a monster. And if you have if Edmonton doesn't get it together, I think Edmonton needs another defenseman. They're looking better.
I mean, LA is looking better, but, like, I think you look at that Trademco, like, he's, like, a a massive trade deadline acquisition early. Dude, league's in trouble. Yeah. Vancouver, 32 points in 26 games. Vegas has 39 and 28.
Man, Vegas is so good again. But I can totally see Vancouver at least nipping at their heels. Yeah. I don't know. It's that that Pacific division is the have and have not division.
And shout out to the Calgary Flames for for holding in there. Just to point behind the Edmonton Oilers here, but I I think it's like the the the top 4 teams are very good, could all win the cup. The LA Kings are a surprise this year, good for them. The bottom teams are decidedly not, I should say. Although, I've always felt like the Kraken should be better than they are.
Don't you think? 922 left in the first. Patcheredi Matthews, Marner on the ice. Heischer line for the devils. So just me or does Heischer always play really well against the Leafs?
Or maybe he's just a good player. Oh, Mercer in front. Good save by Stallers. Oh my god. I don't know how he kept that out.
That's gonna be icing. Nope. It's not gonna be icing for the Leafs. They curled it down there. Didn't hit the end.
856 left in the first. The shots are now 11 to 1. The the the devils are running the Leafs show right now. I don't think there's any other way to say that. Doesn't mean the Leafs can't come back, but, sure would help if we could get anything going.
Tavares, Riley, he gets it down deep. See what the devils did there? They stopped up the play before the Leafs were able to get set up right in the in the left hand corner. Watch. The Leafs are dumping and chasing.
And what are the devils doing? What are they doing? Okay. We're we got a man. We got 2 men on.
Boom. Out. Like, really clean defensive hockey. The Leafs can't get a thing going, and it's leading to a rush chance the other way. Sheldon Keith loves his rush chances, but the Leafs, the Devils, unlike the Leafs, actually, like, get back on defense.
It's crazy. Oh, broken stick. Yeah. The Devils are, running circles around the team right now. 747 left in the 1st period for anybody that wants to align the streams here.
Robert Bet. I've asked a lot of people. I really I don't really like Matthews and Martyr on the same line doing it okay now, but, I hope Aruba splits them up against Keefe. Maybe they figure it out on the fly. Your thoughts.
My my thoughts are this. My thoughts are this. I think that Matthews and Marner together, can be extremely predictable and are also capable of some of the most stunning amazing magic that you've ever seen in your whole life. And it will be a question of how the 2 of them adjust to opponents that have figured them out. And if anybody's gonna know them, it's gonna be Sheldon Keefe and the New Jersey Devils.
Now Justin Fisher is chirping me in the chat right now. He Said there are a number of GMs on the hot seat, but who deserves to lose their job first? Wow, the greatest team ever's GM, or, dude, where's Lamar's GM? So Wow, the greatest team ever is my fantasy football team name, and, dude, where's Lamar? That is Hayden's Fantasy Football team.
And I wanna say that I went from finishing 3rd last year to finishing I think I'm dead last this year in our Fantasy Football pool at SDPN. The playoffs started. Hayden and I didn't qualify. Both of us, I would think, are on the hot seat, but we should at least get till midway through next season before they actually make a call. Because I feel like I put on a strong showing last year.
I was 3rd place. I should at least I should at least get a little bit of time. A little bit of time. Hayden did not watch a single football game this year. Wow.
Oh, what's up, Cassie? It's me, everyone boo Adam. Good night. Good night, Cassie. We love you.
Oh, my stream has every once in a while, my stream, I I look at the the chat stuff, and I I'm like, hey, man. Why are you not working? Does that happen to you guys? 620 left in the 1st period, 13 shots by the devils now. 13 shots to 1 shot.
Good forecheck by the doubles here too. I hate complimenting the other guys, but, you know, you gotta kinda say it as you see it. And the devils are giving the puck carrier a ton of support. They're moving it quickly, and it's it's corner out in front of the net. Sideboard corner out in front of the net, and they've always got a guy there, and they always get the rebound.
Here we go. Pat already. Why did we why did you not shoot here, guys? Oh, I don't know who the defenseman was that that crept up there. I feel like it was very likely yeah.
It was Timmons. Timmons should've shot there. There's a goal leaves go chant happening right now in the devil's game in New Jersey. How about that? 5 15 left in the 1st period.
The Leafs have a single shot, just the 1. And I believe it was the 4th line, Reeves or Holmberg had it. I can't even remember now. This is really rough. Icing.
Oh my god. Wow. Cassie, you've been up since 4 AM, and you should go to sleep. Oh my god. That's a long time.
That's a Cassie, thank you for even joining us and saying hello. STPN still still making fun of me. 8 out of the 10 teams in our football league made the playoffs, and I was 1 of the ones that missed it. Steve lost, 1st place in the league, I think, yesterday. I, like, he I think he was he was, like, killing it.
Oh, another icing call in the Leafs. Yikes. Steve lost 1st place because Drew destroyed Hayden, and, that's the just the way it goes. So producer Drew did producer Drew win the league? The Leafs sent were banking down, today, and it was sad.
I like that guy a lot. But with a bunch of forwards and defense coming back, kinda makes sense that you do get as much ice time as you can at the AHL level. And, you know, I feel like we're gonna see him again. The Marlies look like they have a really, really good team this year. Maybe 1 day or maybe they go deep in the in the playoffs, but I think the Leafs having players like that available to them in the playoffs, very helpful.
Hayden is saying over okay. Here's what I wanna know, Chad. Over under 5 shots in the 1st period for the Leafs. Right now, I'm gonna go under, because the Devils are doing a really good job stopping them from anything. Although, they looked a little better the last couple of minutes.
Like, they could get something started to a question mark. Robert Bette, is Drew happy now that the Avs got goal tending? I I don't know how he feels about it. I think he felt that it was potentially a bit of an overpay for Wedgwood, but, man, Georgiev, oh, here we go. Nylander.
Tavares. Oh, I think we got a penalty here. And I think it's gonna be a slash, and it looks like Eric Hall up potentially on either Tavares or Nielander there. Anyway, yeah, the Avs needed to do something about their goal tending, and and big shout out to them. They're the first team in NHL history that has traded away both opening night goalies before Christmas.
The only other team that went in went 82 games and traded away their opening night goal tenders over the course of the season were the 14, 15 Buffalo Sabers. It's a crazy stat. I got that from the guy that does research for TNT. The guy's brilliant. And, you kinda look at that and you think, like, when do you go into the season thinking you'd have to do something like that?
Like, that is a that's a tall order. Ask me again, Robert, in 4 weeks when we've had a a chance to look at the avalanche. Because here's the deal. They had, like, 7 forwards that were injured, and then they had the goal tending stink. All I'm saying is it's gonna start to look good.
Canadian girl 83. I hate exams. LOL. Hi, everyone. Oh, man.
Do not miss exams. I do not miss exams. Ocheka, what's the weather like up in Toronto? Right now, it's been well, it's been raining all day and, wet and not that cold. But, you know, usual December cold.
There was some snow last week. By the way, Canadian girl 83 getting some, some love in the chat. Hey, Canadian girl 83. I hope you nail exams. Thank you, Rayne Winslow.
I love that kind of positivity. Buff Derat. Adam, tape your stick. No. You tape your stick.
We don't need any of this tape. Doesn't do anything. Ricky, a VIP member for 9 months. Happy 9 months from Prudential Center. Are you watching right from the Prudential Center?
I and you say you're stressed. Wow. Adam, I'm on tour in India. I'm on a tour in India, and my guide in for Agra is your doppelganger. You'll have to send a picture through.
I would love to know. Adam, I like how you have a great accent when you do the British accent on the SDPN show. Well, thank you. I appreciate that, Gabriel. I don't know if it's that good.
I think British people probably cringe. Is there a worse like, who cringes harder when someone tries to do their their accent? British people or Jamaican people? Nobody can do a Jamaican accent properly except for Jamaicans, and yet everybody tries it. And British people, no 1 seems to be able to do it unless you're, like, a paid professional athlete, and, oh my god, the Leafs are allowing a 2 on 1 on their own power play, and woah.
The last thing you need, forget the goal part, is to take a penalty when you're on your own power play because nobody got back to help the defenseman. You don't need that. Felicity Waters said nobody can do Australian accents either. True. Yeah.
I I worked with an Australian guy, at Virgin Radio in Calgary. His name is Simon Mitchell, and he did some work for, like, Nova and some of the other stations. I think 2 Day FM in in Perth, Australia. And, he or no. Was he Melbourne?
Adelaide? I think he's Adelaide now. But, anyway, long story short, Simon said that you if you're gonna Simon said. Oh, here we go. Another another devil's rush on the Leafs power play.
Holy crap. They stink right now. They're bad. Minute left on the power play. 240 left in the 1st period.
Apparently, he said something along the lines of you have to look at the word toast, and you have to, like, hold the o. So toast. Taus. I'm I'm like, I still couldn't do it. Aussie accent's a tough 1 to do.
Karl Schantz the 3rd, I'm here. What I miss? Well, if you're a Devils fan, you've missed a great 1st period. If you missed if you're a Leafs fan, you've missed probably the worst 1st period of their entire season. This is really bad.
Even on the power play, they're they've got no answer for the way the Devils are playing them. And you watch Jack Hughes is right on top of Morgan Riley as soon as he starts playing. And, you know, that this is the thing with the Leafs. They take too long to get set up on power plays, and if you press them, they make mistakes, which is why Baruba has been trying to get them to, like, come on. Like, speed it up.
It's not just about having possession, it's about doing something with the possession. Doctor Nick, 2 Day FM is in Sydney. K. So it's not the 2 Day FM, but it was part of the 2 Day Network. They have, like, you know, they have, like it used to be the Kyle and Jackie O network.
Australians in the chat know what I'm talking about. 5 seconds to go in this power play. 144 left in the first and, boy, that was bad. Real bad. If you were a Leafs fan and you traveled to New Jersey to see this game, boy, do I feel bad for you.
Johnny Wilkinson, is it possible hat Adam shows up on the next LFR? Oh, that's a no goal. No goal. No goal. The reason that hat Adam can't exist is because my head's too big and I can't put a hat on.
Man, so you saw the devil's forecheck there and just watching the replay. Carter, woah, baby. Almost had 1. The Devils had more shots on the Leafs power play than the Leafs did, and that's pretty easy to do when the Leafs get 0 shots on their own power play. They still have just the 1 shot.
They've credited the 1 shot to Morgan Riley, but it was Reeves and Holmberg who were at the net when he took it. So, you know, cool. Greg l, just sloppy turnover. Sloppy everything, Greg. Sloppy everything.
Ali Boromond, worst first period of the season without question. I I would be hard pressed to even name 1 that comes close to this. This is bad. Like, I would say the Predators won last week wasn't great. They were okay.
This is like you're getting you're getting crushed. You're getting steamrolled. Brad k, remember, anything can happen in Jersey. That's right. Ken Danico is doing this game tonight against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
I wish Steve was on the stream so he could do it. Canadian 27, my first time joining the stream. Thanks, guys. Well, welcome to the stream. Usually, when the game's better, it can be a little better than this, but, like, not every game's gonna be a winner.
However, it would be nice if the Leafs showed up at all. Because right now, with 57.8 seconds left to go, they are on pace for 3 shots in this game. I'm I'm sure they'll get more. But this feels like, the time the Leafs played the devils, and I think it was the 2nd round and the devils held them to 6 shots all game. Hayden just sent me a stat and oh, it hasn't come through yet.
Here we go. Least amount of shots in an NHL game. Oh, Jack Hughes. Oh, baby. Oh my god.
Hang on. Oh, I think the leash just got a penalty. Delay a game. Oh my god. See, this is what happens when you play like crap.
You then have other shit happen. Like, you have other things that happen that make it real like, make it worse. Watch. Benoit tries to get it out there, should've gone up the boards, didn't go up the boards. Now he's under pressure, and he tries to throw it.
Now I thought yeah. It feels a little like Jesper Brat touched that. Oh, maybe not. So, you you know, here's the thing. If if Benoit fires it against the boards and out, maybe it's an icing, but it's not a penalty.
And then he's gotta clean up his own stuff, and he doesn't do a good job of that, and it leads to a mistake. Now 38.6 or 36, 35, 34 seconds left. Hughes with a nice play across. K. Wow.
23 seconds left to go. I'm gonna read you a crazy stat here after these 20 seconds are up because the Leafs have had this is an awful first period. This is awful. This is bad. Oh my goodness.
The the Devils look so good. I'm so glad this power play is split over 2 periods because, man, I wouldn't wanna go 2 minutes against this Devils power play with the Leafs playing the way they are. Did they go out drinking last night? Like, they are playing hungover. Okay.
So so we're gonna play a clip here in a second. The period's over. Here are the least amount of shots in an NHL game, the records. K? In October 1958, the New York Rangers registered 0 shots.
In February 1978, the Capitals registered 7. This is regular season games, by the way. The Canucks did had an 8 shot game in December of 1996. The Flames had an 8 shot game in 95. The Scouts, which are Kansas City, which are now the New Jersey Devils, had a, an 8 shot game in 76.
The Capitals had a 9 shot game in 2003. The Flames had a 9 shot game in 2001. Preds had a 9 shot game in 2001. The Leafs and this is a really good team too. In March 1999 had a had a, a 9 shot game, and the Sharks in 1998 also had a 9 shot game.
Those are, I'll be honest with you. The Leafs are on pace to beat every 1 of those except for the New York Rangers who had a 0 shot game. Goofy Goober. Adam, what was Natalie's instant reaction to you when wearing devil's jammies on the show a few years ago? Also, what a bad period.
Her instant reaction was you know what? To give her credit, I don't think it's the hottest I've ever looked, and she didn't make it about that. She thought it was funny. But, you know, she likes she likes her girls curvy and, you know, bit of a curvy girl, especially with those on. I bought them purposely a few sizes too small too.
So not that not that I was in great shape then or now, but boy, by golly, it sure did not do me any favors. Canadian girl 83, studying for exams and dropping 10 subs in the chat. Thank you, Canadian girl 83. Depressing. Pickleball pat, completely brutal 1st period.
Stallard saved us. Yes. He did. And sometimes you need a goalie to do that. Now when I come back, I'm gonna make a coffee, and I gotta eat some food.
But when I come back, I'm gonna tell you something. There's some things the Leafs can do in this second period to make this not be that bad. The reality is the goalie sometimes is gonna bail you out if you have a goalie good enough to do it. The Leafs do. They got out of that period without allowing a goal.
That's pretty important, or at least it could be if they turn it around. We'll talk on the other end of this. In the meantime, let's talk about Nick Robertson. Is he a Here's what Baruba said. He said he just has to play better.
That's it. We all know that. I talked to him today about it. We'll figure it out. It's my job and the coaching staff's job to help him.
It's his job to find a way to play better hockey. He he's capable of it. Ability, speed, good shot. We have to find a way to get him going. He had a, a sort of a bush league offside which led to a face off against the Capitals, which led to him taking an offensive zone penalty.
And that is a big no no, especially with a guy like Craig Is this guy done?
Like, they Here. Done here. They're they're obviously I I could see him having success somewhere eventually. They're holding on to hope with this guy because he seems to score goals so effortlessly. Like, there's based on last
year this year.
Sorry. Not this year.
Last year, he had 15 goals.
Last year,
like Yeah. On very limited time, and there was every reason to believe that, you know, he would take a step forward this year. And, the the leaves are missing 4 forwards, and he's not in the lineup. Like, I don't know. I I I never wanna talk I never want to talk bad about any player.
Like, I want to cheer for the leaves. Mhmm. Right? This isn't me going get this bum off my team. I'm cheering for them, but, you know, it's getting late quick.
And it's December, and they've played 4 straight not so great games. And they've lost the last 2 of them. And we need the bottom half of the lineup to produce, and he's 1 of the guys who hasn't done it. Right? Like, they're they're going for other options.
Like, camp comes back. Like, camp is obviously that's not where you go for offense. But we know his role, and I have every faith he can do his role better than what is Robertson's role?
Right.
What even is it? Like, this team
What would you have him do, guys?
Score, but he's not doing it. Yeah. Yeah.
His whole thing is I'm going to be offense. And if he's not providing the offense, then you get the question of what do you do here? And with a healthy Leafs lineup, if everybody in their forward group was healthy, he's, the odd man out. Like, I don't see a place for him because already, like, Minton's established himself, I think, way ahead of Robertson. Dewar's ahead of him.
Yarn Croke, healthy, is ahead of him. Camp provides something. You know what camp is.
Like
It isn't offense. It's
not offense, but he's useful, you know, as a setter man. So, yeah, Robertson's just the odd man out. So where does he go with this organization?
It says something to me that Grubankin sat and, like, I mean, he's the kid. He can be sent down. Mhmm. But Robertson sat too while Minton stayed in. Number 1 I mean, the positive take from that is wow.
Fraser Minton, very good. But, like, Robbie god. I I appreciate Baruvi saying that, but the direction very obviously seems to be he's not gonna play games here anymore.
Yeah. Oh, you you think that's it? You think he's not gonna play?
Missing 4 forwards. He's not in
the lineup. Do you think it's just a set, get your mind right back in?
I hope so if I'm his agent. Okay.
Yeah.
For sure. And then he plays the next game and scores. So here's
here's what I wondered. Right? Like, the the the Leafs play style, which I actually love to change. How do you guys feel about the Leafs this year versus last? It's Mhmm.
Yeah. It's a lot. It's good. Right? And listen, I haven't loved this week worth the games.
I have not loved their game this week. But before this, it's been really, really good. I wonder if the play style, the dump and chase, that sort of stuff, which is stuff they never did before Mhmm. Has affected his game because he seems like a rush player.
Well, it's it's up to you as the player to fit in the system that your coach wants to play, and the system that the coach is playing this year has been a very successful system. Like, the Leafs are playing really low event hockey, and it's established themselves to being in every game. Even when they're getting outplayed, like, in the Washington game, they're still in that game. Like, they had a shot to win because of how Craig Brube has them playing. And with last night where, Alex Nylander comes in and Pacheretti comes back, the 2 guys that are squeezed are Robertson and Grubankin, and you see that and you're like, okay.
He clearly likes what those guys can provide more and Patches will clearly be in the top 6. And then Nylander didn't have a great game at all. But Alex or Willie? Alex. K.
A. Nylander. But it's still he got there in that lineup ahead of Robertson. So there's not really space for him.
You know, let's take this opportunity to trash someone. It's not a player. It's the Buffalo Sabers. Because Alright.
We can all agree
on that.
Right? Yeah. Alright.
Yeah. There's no palm trees.
I so I still haven't seen that.
Yeah. And don't watch it. We're gonna do a full breakdown of that press conference on Tuesday. Tuesday.
There are times where I intentionally stay uninformed. Yes. So that Adam can inform me.
Yeah.
But I there are times where I watch Alex and, like, if if I'm not wearing my glasses or I squint, I'm like, that's Willie.
Mhmm.
Like, the way he skates and, he can shoot. And why did he do that? That wasn't smart. The Bucks go
in the other way. That's not Willie at all.
Yeah.
And I can't help but like, they were both drafted top 10, 8th overall. 1 of them was in the Leafs organization, which is notoriously and historically very good. Why'd you laugh? Why'd you no. And no.
But then there's Buffalo. And and I wanna say, Alex Nylander was sort of drafted in an era where the Sabers couldn't do anything right. Like, they're they're slowly digging out of it, but I wouldn't have trusted the 2016 Sabers with a Tim's run.
Well, you got you got you had Jack Eichel. You had Sam Reinhart. You had Brandon Montour. Gone. Gone.
Gone. All and all of those guys have won cups. Yep. And were huge parts of it. I mean, Reinhart's gonna score 50 goals again this year, assuming he stays healthy.
You know, that you're right. That's an organization that's not great to be drafted into, I think.
And and what'd you get, for Reinhardt? A pick and a goal you're also ruining. Like, Devin Levi's a good goalie. He's a good goalie.
Wow. Here we go. Alright.
So I don't know.
Alex Nylander also hasn't established himself as an NHL, and he's got plenty years post Buffalo to do that.
It was also 4 teams ago. Yeah.
Honestly, I
just wanted
to get my shots in. Yeah. You're taking a lot of side shots out of Buffalo. Yeah. Because why not?
Let
him. Why not?
With the way Nylander played last night, they're probably a use case for Robertson to come back in and just show what he has. So I don't think he's done with the Leafs. No. He'll probably get a couple more shots, but with a healthy team, like, I don't know where he plays.
So
yeah. You know, you get 1 guy back. Let's say it's I don't know. Domi.
I forgot about Domi. I know. Domi's still he's a former man.
Who I also forgot was hurt. Right. You know
They're all apparently coming back this week. Like, it's Yeah. Bob McKenzie was the guy reporting it too. McMahon, Bob McCabe, all those guys are coming back.
And I just winced. That's good news. Yeah. No. No.
That's good. It's just for this 1 guy who we're all cheering for, it's not working.
Yeah. Yeah. Okay.
Hi, everybody. I I was having a little salad in the intermission, and I was thinking about it. And I was thinking about this 1 thing. You're Craig Barube, and this is where I think being a coach is like, man, it's a tough job. That's a tough job.
I mean, they get paid well-to-do it, but think of all the crap that you have to go through to be a coach in the NHL. And I know Berube, Craig Berube was, you know, a player, and he was a player for a long time, effective player. But as a coach, this guy started out as an assistant coach with the Philadelphia phantoms in 2004, 2005. Chip for context, that's 20 years ago. I was in grade 10.
And that that's when he started as an assistant, then he became the head coach of the Phantoms, and became an assistant at the NHL level for, like, a hot second with the flyers in 0607, and then a full time assistant with them in 0 8, 09, did not become a head coach in Philadelphia, which was his first job, until 2013, 2014. And, you know, then coached them for 2 years. And then when they this is funny because the 2nd year when they missed the playoffs with him, they fired him. So he ended up with the Chicago Wolves for a year in the AHL, became an associate coach with the Blues in 17, 18, stayed that way, and then became the Blues head coach in 18, 19. We all know when they they won the cup there.
It's so you imagine. You're Craig Brube. You put all this effort in. You've given your life to hockey. K?
And and let's not forget, he also played a 1,000 games in the NHL as a player, racked up 31 100 penalty minutes. So this is a man, some man, who like knows what's up, knows when the team stinks, knows when they don't have the wheels. Even a guy with that much experience, what do you say to the Toronto Maple Leafs on a Tuesday night in December in New Jersey to get them to play, like, half as good as they're capable of? That for for that first period was abominable. That was terrible.
If you're Craig Barube, you it's almost like, hey, guys. Are you even worthy of me being in the room right now? All the experience that I have that I'm bringing to the table, I'm not messing up on the bench. What's going on with you? How do you get a team that starts that flat going without being too dramatic about it?
Because, yeah, it's it's game 28, man. There's 82 that's so many games. So many games. What do you need to do to get a guy like Matthews, Marner, Pacioreti? What do you tell them?
What do you tell Nylander, Tavares, Nies who of the Leafs forwards looked the best? What do you tell the 3rd line? Hey, Max. You've missed the last 24 days, but could you carry us, please? Like, this is that was bad.
That was really bad. And I don't know what Craig Barube can say to those guys to get their attention on a night like this, because you don't wanna be too if you're too dramatic too early in the season, you're gonna get people looking at you like, okay. It's a Tuesday in December. But we know Craig wants it every night. Every shift, every time you step on the ice, Craig Roubaix hockey is maximum effort.
That doesn't feel like maximum effort to me. What's going on there? You know what I mean? This is bad. It's just bad.
So I I don't know what he's saying to them. Warrior Womp, that period was flatter than overnight ginger ale. Arisha says, put Nye's back on the first line, Patches down to the second. Yeah. It's interesting because I thought Patcharetti was doing really well with Tavares before he went down with the injury.
Yeah. I don't I don't know. I don't know. Canadian girl 83, thanks for the love, everybody. Remember to support your local junior teams too.
Kitchener Rangers, Sue Greyhounds, OHL, WHL, QMJHL, whatever other league you have. Exactly. Shout out to the OHL who are so great to work with. 1 shot on goal, the Leafs had. 1 shot on goal.
I bet if you'd thrown the, the Kingston Frontenacs out there. I just we just went to Kingston on Sunday. If they if you thrown the Kingston Frontenacs out there, they could at least got more than 1 shot on the New Jersey Devils in that period. Don't you think? 1 shot?
You probably get like, I would count on the fronts to at least get, like, 4 or 5. The Oshawa Generals have 3 1st round picks on their team currently and probably some more coming. I bet they could do 5 shots. 5? This is rough, dude.
It's rough. That was bad. By the way, our poll results are in. What do you think of Nick Robertson? Trade him?
The experiment is over. 40% of you are saying, trade him. 31% of you said, I just love clicking buttons. Thank you for your help. 21% of you said, keep playing him.
He'll break out. And, 5% of you said, risk sending him down. Yeah. It's hard not to see how he wouldn't get claimed, like, if you're a like, if you're the Ducks. You know?
You just brought in Jake Trouba. Zegris is gonna be out for a while. Could it hurt to claim a guy like Nick Robertson and just try him? I don't think so. I don't know.
I I don't know. George Pye says, I don't think an OHL team even gains the offensive zone. Well, man, not the way that the devils are playing. They're playing great. Richard Truffino, Adam, you are welcome.
Grippers and buttons. Thank you. Ali Bormond says, great point, Adam. Buffalo had Eichel, Reinhart, Thompson, Dahlin, Montour, Olmark. They should be competing for a cup if they had any sort of front office.
Listen. We can talk about Buffalo. We did talk about Buffalo a lot in today's STP. If you guys haven't watched it yet, it's actually interesting. We did the Rangers.
We did a little bit about, Michael Ann Lauer, the owner of the senators accusing the Rangers of some soft tampering. We did a little bit about the Leafs. We did a little bit about the Buffalo Sabers. And the Sabers thing is interesting. It was more about the Kevin Adams press conference last week about, oh, we have taxes and we don't have palm trees and blah blah blah.
At some point, the problem is you. I'll leave it for the podcast. At some point, it's not about Buffalo not being a destination city because I have lived through Buffalo being amazing, and they were a destination, and it is a good place to grow up. And listen, Steve made a really good point. If you're rich, pretty well anywhere in North America is not a bad place to live, especially the NHL cities.
You can't really have a bad time. Right? Buffalo, maybe downtown doesn't look all that great and maybe it needs a revitalization, but I could tell you some of those neighborhoods, some of those houses really, really good cost of living. You can live pretty damn well. It's the organization.
It's it's it's turning the entire, city against Jack Eichel because he didn't wanna get the same neck procedure that you wanted him to get. It's his neck. I don't blame him. Anyway yeah. You it's up to them.
You gotta make you gotta make it a destination again. Toronto got, Toronto wasn't a destination for a long time. I remember they were gearing up. We're gonna go sign Brad Richards. And Brad Richards was like, no thanks.
I'll go to New York. Who can blame them? The Leafs back then sucked, and they were run poorly. Who would wanna sign here? They had to go and trade for guys.
Phil Kessel, Dion Phaneuf, Joffrey Leupold. That those group of guys were all traded for. None of them signed here. Now listen. They didn't they didn't do a lot together, but, you know, not there.
Even James Van Riemensdijk was a trade. It was Luke Shen. So Simone Benoit is gonna start the period in the box. I am going to clap to start this so we can align. 2:20 minutes left in the period.
Starts now. And 1:20 left on the power play. Oh, I missed a super chat. Justin sent it to me from Arisha Radmard. 4 plus 1 bad games, common denominator Matthews.
Is it time to start asking questions? No doubt 30 fours is done, but I'm starting to see a trend. Here's what I would think. I think that they need to play Austin Matthews with different people. And I don't understand.
Maybe it's a Matthews thing. He played really well with Domi last year. I don't understand why they haven't done that. Domi Matthews, Tavares, Nylander, Marner, and please, god, go out and get a centerman. I just don't understand why they don't do that.
That's 3 good lines right there. It doesn't even matter who's playing, but when McMahon comes back, when Yarn Crow comes back, I mean, you've got deep you've got some deep forward options. Marner is very clearly good enough to drive his own line. He was doing it while Matthews was gone. He was spectacular.
Some of the best hockey we've ever seen him play. Let him do it. Let him do it. Also, they need a they they need a 3rd line center. I still don't think Mitton's the answer.
He might be eventually, but I just don't know that this is the season. Canadian girl 83. If you guys ever end up coming to the Super Greyhounds game, first coffee or drinks is on me. There are some good pubs here too. Well, thank you Canadian girl 83.
And I think we will take you up on that. Although, reverse order, we will pay for the drinks because we'll be doing a live show at 1 of your local establishments. I would love to go to the Sioux. I would. I wouldn't wanna go in the dead of winter.
Maybe we could get a a spring or a fall. Dead of winter at the Sioux, I've I've I've heard is pretty intense in terms of snow. Nyes Matthews, Domi first line. Julian, I love what you're thinking. What what if what if you put it doesn't really matter.
Like, what if you put McMahon with Tavares and Nylander, which is a good line? It could be Pacheretti, Matthews, and Domi. And then you put, Nice, who's been spectacular, with Marner and Please Find A Sentiment. Yarn crock. Croak.
Whatever. I don't know. Russell says, stick a game clock on the screen, please. Russell, we'd like to. It's not as easy as you'd think.
Yeah. It's not as easy as you think, but I can tell you that there are I'll give you the time in just a second here. TSN doesn't have it up right now. That was a really odd slashing penalty, by the way. 1807 left in the 2nd period.
1807. That is that is rough. That is really rough. Here we go. Okay.
So the Leafs have to kill basically back to back penalties to kill to start their 2nd period. Probably not what you want when you registered 1 shot in the 1st period, Probably not the greatest way to start. Just me. Just me. At least the Leafs PK is somewhat good, Somewhat?
It's been pretty good this year. The devils are cycling the puck so beautifully tonight. They are just locked. And that nice great play across, Dougie Hamilton had a shot there that was a little bit blocked. If he gets a clean shot away, I don't know how Stollars can't even get in the way of that.
It was just a beautiful tic tac toe. 112 left on the, penalty. 1715 left in the second period. Jack Hughes rushing the puck up the ice. He's looked great tonight.
There's my boy, Andre Palat, who I love, who I wish was a Leaf. Lucas Walsh, what's up big dog? Man, I love being called big dog. What man doesn't love being called big dog? Alright.
Good save by Stullers there through traffic. That's just great positioning, and the fact that he's 6 foot 7, really helps. Vegas, Golden, Bettman, Eichel, O'Reilly, Reinhardt, Oposo, all leave Buffalo and win a cup. So whichever team gets a player from Buffalo, is winning. I think that, Dylan Cousins is a is a guy that I think Sabers fans are all over right now.
I think even, I think even Fried was talking about that. And, man, Dylan Cousins is a good player. I wouldn't be in a rush to trade him. I I know. Just yeah.
Speaking of bad teams, the Leafs tonight, bad. Oh, okay. The the well, they cleared the net there. Here's Mitch Marner and Austin Matthews on a 2 on 1. Let's see where this goes.
Nope. Nowhere. Marner passed because of course they knew that Marner was gonna pass because he always does. And listen, I respect the fact that they got the 2 on 1, but it was broken up. Alright now we go another 2 on 1 Marner Matthews Marner's gonna pass and this time it goes through and Matthews shoots and I think completely misses the net they're probably exhausted though those guys are probably suck and win at that point Boy.
The Leafs are guys, I know I'm tempting fate by saying this, but they are so lucky to be this far into this game and not have 4 goals against. I mean, they are being out shot 16 to 1. That Matthews 2 on 1 didn't even count as a shot. Come on now. Oh, they just got their 2nd shot.
It's a roller from John Tavares, but it still counts. That's Morgan Rielly and Jon Tavares, each with a shot tonight. It's fantastic. It's a great job. See okay.
So they're showing the Marner 2 on 1, the first 1 here. He puts it right into the skates of the defenseman. If Marner shoots that, it forces the goalie to go down and make a pad save and likely kick the puck out to Matthews. And you gotta remember, like, the Leafs have owned Markstrom in the past. I like, this is their this is a guy they can win against.
I don't know. It's just Stahlrs is playing very, very well. I'm thrilled to have him on my fantasy team. I can't tell you what a great pick that was. I can't believe I had him.
And by the way, the name of my fantasy team is Reach For The Stahlrs. You know, who doesn't like a good pun? 5 1531 left in the 2nd period. Lisa gifted 5 SDPN memberships. Lisa, thank you so much.
Hopefully, the Leafs get to 5 shots, Lisa. I we'll see. We'll see. I don't know. Can the Leafs get to 5 shots in the next 5 minutes of play?
So they have 1 shot already. They need 4 more shots before the 10 minute mark of the second period. Otherwise, we have to start talking about this game in, like, historic terms, like, how did the New Jersey Devils do this to the Toronto Maple Leafs? And the other question, which always accompanies something like this, why is it always the Toronto Maple Leafs? Why?
Here comes Ryan Reeves whose line did register a shot earlier. Morgan Riley got credit for it, but him and Holmberg were in front of the net. Maybe they can get a shot. 1441 left in the 2nd period. Still 1 will the here's another question for you.
1435 left in the second. The Devils have 18 shots, the Leafs have 1. Will the Devils get to 18 shots before the Leafs get to 5? Sure looking that way, isn't it? Here we go.
Devils are gonna have 1 here and here. Oh, nice little breakup by Connor Timmons. Dude, Connor Timmons could not play defense before this season. What happened this summer? That's what I gotta know.
Nice to Matthews. Oh, and it's batted away. So there's the Leafs' 2nd shot of the game. That was a real second shot. I thought the Tavares shot would have counted too.
How did Matthews not score on that? How did Tavares' shot not count? Is the shot counter stuck? We do have 2 official shots registered to the net. I think it should be 3.
The Leafs need 3 more before the 10 minute mark. Otherwise, like I said, we're talking about this game in historic terms. Guys, we need to throw a party if they get to 5 shots. Will the Devils hit 20 before the Leafs hit 5? That is a terrible giveaway.
What was that? Chris Tanev too. Like, everybody's having an off night. Nice little shot bought blocked by Mitch Marner there. Come on, Mitchell.
Come on, Mitchell. Nice little move at the blue line. Alright. Now set up. Get possession.
The devils are all over him. Shot at the net. There was some chaos in front. I gotta respect it. That was the right thing to do.
Good play. Try to get something going. Max Petch Reddy tried to turn it around there. Oliver Ekman Larson with the stop up at the blue line. I'm assuming that was an offside.
Matt Nye with a good play there. Good play. Matthews tried to go 5 hole. I think Markstrom had his number. Man, wave at 5 shots.
1 more shot, guys. We need 1 more shot before the 10 minute mark. 1 more shot. Mouseless, Lisa, I wanna say thank you for the membership. Yeah.
If you do get a gift at a membership, make sure you shout out the person that dropped it to you. Thank you, Lisa, for dropping those, and squeezable lemon, and Canadian girl. BRGR, is Matthew still hurt a little? Yes. He is.
I don't think he feels perfect yet. Johnny Wilkinson, how comedic is this game, Adam? What do you find funny? It is funny. It's funny in a tragic way, but sometimes with comedy, like, the best comedy there's always a little bit of tragedy.
With the Leafs, I just feel over the course of the years that there's just been too much tragedy. So our tragedy threshold is very thin, and it's just not looking great. Robert Molloy dropping into the chat saying Pittsburgh might have an emergency backup situation. Does that mean Jari's hurt? And, and Ned?
Wow. That's bad TV. I'm a sick puppy, and I wanna see how Steve would react. You know what would be better? If the Leafs win somehow.
Like, they get desperately outplayed the entire game win win nothing. The Anthony Staller's you shall not pass game. You shall not pass. Like that. Like Gandalf.
Somebody's gotta make that animation. Sorry for, clipping the the microphone here too. It doesn't it doesn't handle loud voices very well. We're gonna have to work on that. We need microphones in this studio that handle loud voices.
Man, Connor Timmons with a great breakup there. They're just showing it on, TV. Really great defensive play, which leads to Nies and Matthews setting up for the, well, the Leafs' best shot of the game because it's their second 1. 3rd? The Leafs have 4 shots.
The Devils have 19. Will the Leafs get to 5 shots before the Devils get to 20? We're gonna find out the Devils could have a shot here. Oh, boy. I don't know, guys.
The Devils have got some good offensive zone pressure. Oh, a little breakup by Max Patch already. Coach is gonna love that. Notice that Patches is out there with Nylander and Tavares because he was playing better there before. Morgan Rielly with a thing?
With a thing. That's really great analysis, Adam. Here we go. And they score. Andre Palat.
I should have put money on Palat. I should have put money on Palat. The devils get their 20th shot before the before the Leafs even have 5. Oh, boy. David Owens just got here after work.
Maybe should've kept working 2 bloody shots, maybe I'll turn the momentum. David, I hope so. I should've bet on Andre Pilar to score today. The devils got to 20 shots before the Leafs got to 4. So for every 5 shots the devils have taken, the Leafs have had 1.
And by the way, 3 of those 4 shots have come in the 2nd period. So you could say things are looking up. You could say the Leafs are getting better. Rally caps on. Anthony Stallers has been amazing.
J a says ESPN hit the shot counter again. Did they? I don't know what it's like to watch a hockey game on ESPN. I never do. Why is this on me specifically?
Why are you guys mad at me? I'm merely stating the facts. Do you do I look like a guy with my milk milk bag body could get out there on the ice and help things? No. This is the Toronto Maple Leafs' fault.
Don't you put this on me. This is on them. They get paid 1,000,000 of dollars. I am a guy in a room between 2 crotches talking to you. This is not my fault.
By the way, 2 minutes 2 minutes. 12 minutes left in the second period. If the Leafs tie it up here, it'll be hilarious. Just hilarious. Who's to blame for that goal?
Toronto's defense, Anthony Stoler's Adam Wyld. I'm voting Adam Wyld even though it's really not my fault. I'm just dying for the Leafs 4th line to score 1 here. Nice little play by Connor Dewar over to Holmberg. Didn't go anywhere, but really good good eyesight.
I like it. Yeah. Boy. I have to say though Toronto's 3rd and 4th lines have looked much better than the first lines. Sorry about drinking coffee right on the microphone, but I didn't have time because Drew cut a a a kind of a short clip.
I didn't have time to drink much before. Lindsay, hockey fiend, baking cookies. Not watching the game, but I'm here. Well, Lindsay, you're not missing much with the game, But with Gripper nation, it's always a good time. You and 615 other people.
It's just a it's just a good old time. People are blaming me because I I shave the mustache and that's why the Leafs are losing? Come on now. Actually, they have been bad since I shaved. Like yeah.
So I shaved it on the Saturday or sorry, on the Sunday, December 1st. K? And they have been bad ever since. Maybe it was the mustache. That's actually funny.
I could have been the mustache. It could have been. Brock Besser, shots are overrated. True. Brock Besser would know, Vancouver didn't get any shots, during the, series against Nashville and still won.
They were winning with, like, 12 shots in a game. 1108 left in the second period. Toronto on a power play. Their first power play yielded 1 shot for the devils, 0 for the Leafs. So we're hoping, that the, devils penalty kill, forgets how to do it.
And, I'm getting a phone call, and I can't take that phone call. It's a good time. Good time. It's a bad time to take a phone call. Bad time to take a phone call.
It's always I love everybody, but not all my family knows that I'm actually talking right now. So it's all good. It's all good. 133 left in this power play, And watch how aggressive the doubles for checkers are on the Leafs defense. There are 3 or 4 Leafs down deep ready to get this play started.
And look at 91 on the doubles. Right? Look what he's doing. Dawson Mercer in there interrupting their flow. They can't even get the 1st pass done, and look at that.
Here we go. We got a breakaway. Nico He's sure, leaf eater alive, but, Anthony Stallers closes the 5 hole, and they're a okay. Leafs come back on a rush. Tavares in front to Nice.
Oh, just balanced them a little bit. I think the pass was maybe, like, a second too late. But hey. Listen. It was a potential opportunity.
A scoring. They have 5 forwards on the power play? Oh, they do. Mitch Marner, quarterbacking. K.
Let's be quicker about setting up. Marner to Nylander, good play. Nylander crosses the the line here. There's Domee out there for some of his first power play time in a month. Nylander, Marner along the points.
There's Domee at the side net. Nice little setup for Austin. Was that Austin? No. That was I can't even tell who that is.
It's probably Morgan Rielly. Anthony Stallers, 15 seconds to go on this power play. The Leafs have had a couple of opportunities. I don't know if they even count as shots. No.
They don't because they still have 4 shots, but I'll give them credit. They have had some opportunities. Now this is the 2nd power play in a row, I believe, that the Devils have outshot the Leafs. And what I mean by that is that's the 2nd power play in a row for the Leafs that the Devils have outshot the Leafs on their own power play. And by the way, both times, the Devils had a shot against the Leafs, the Leafs had 0 shots against the Devils.
Oh, baby. Oh, baby. Are you kidding me? The Leafs have still not registered their 5th shot and we're well past the 10 minute mark. Time to start talking about this game in potentially historic proportions.
Maybe some score effects take over in the 3rd period. I don't know. I think the Leafs have played better this period, but hard not to considering how bad they were. I think that's an icing call there. 835 left in the 2nd period.
Yucky. Yucky. Alex McDougall, they had 1 shot in the first. That's right, Alex. They had 1 shot in the 1st period, and they've had 3 in the second.
Right now, they're clipping along at roughly a shot every 5 minutes. That's the average. It's rough. What's going on, gripper nation? I'm sorry I'm late.
This is Lemon and Friends. What is this? Another 3rd period comeback while being out shot 5 to 1? Shake my head. Yeah.
I know it's bad. It's bad. It's bad. It's bad. The Leafs at least are winning a good amount of face offs.
Yay? Yay? Anyway. Oh, here we go. They've there's the Durer Holmberg making stuff happen.
They have they've you know what? 4th line has done a good job for checking today. We have to look at the positives, and they're out there against the Hughes line. That's not easy. Okay?
Making things happen, keeping it in the offensive zone, throwing some hits. Ryan Reaves trying to put some bodies into the bench. You know? Oh, Chris Tenev just got a shot. I believe that's our 5th shot of the game.
I just wanna make sure the shot counter actually registers it. Could that also be the 6th shot? Ladies and gentlemen, we just got 2 shots on the same shift for the first time all night long. The Leafs now have 6 shots. 6 shot party.
Hashtag 6 shot party. Everybody do 6 shots of water. No booze. David Owens. Don't think my bet on Willie getting 3 plus shots is looking pretty good?
I don't think so, David. I don't think so. Yeah. This is not it's kinda crazy. Like, I I the 4th line really put a good shift in there, and that was against the devil's top line.
Full marks. Craig's gonna keep putting them out there too. To quote Steve, this is from West Richard. Why are the Leafs the way that they are? Maybe you hold the answer, Adam.
Is it is it my fault? Is it the mustache shaving? Can't be. Demon fox 232. Man, disappointing so far.
Yeah. I'd say. Listen. The 1 thing I am kind of I don't wanna mention it too much. The 1 thing I do wanna talk about, and I said this before the devil scored their later their first goal is that, like, they've made it this far into the game, and devils only scored a goal.
I mean, you could listen. You can be bad and score 2 goals. Look at the Pittsburgh Penguins. They're bad, and they regularly score 2 goals. You can be bad and score 2 goals.
Maybe the Leafs are bad tonight, but they could still get 2 goals. Pixel Nugget. Over under Leafs 15 shots. That is a really, really good question. Because here's the thing.
The Leafs are weird, and you know that, you know, they did this against the the Predators. You know, in the 3rd period that they could just go, okay. We feel like playing hockey now. Here we go. Right?
They could do that. I don't know that they will. I just I like, the over under on any NHL team in any NHL game, Like, the under under 15 shots would would have to pay out crazy odds, especially for a team that scores like the least have for the last decade. Have to. Canadian girl 83.
I told Jesse last stream, but when Cassie comes to Toronto, someone at the game needs to make a Cassie clan sign. I agree. Nice little setup by Marner there. 7:40 left in the second period for everybody that wants to align the streams with my stream and your stream. We all stream.
I can't finish that off. Well, stream for what? I won't I won't lie to you guys. Leaf's have been bad. And it looks like Brube has put the blinds in a bit of a blender here.
Matthews and Minton and Marner are out there, the triple m line, line, the line, line. We'll see what happens. Looks like the devils are offside. Leafs just carried the puck out and got stopped at the red line or the blue line by the devils. And okay.
So Minton Matthews Marner just switched it up. Let's see who the line is. We got Domi. We got Nies. Marner is still out there, but I'm assuming he needs a change.
So is it Domi Nies Tavares? Woah. Nice little wrap around there by the devils, which I don't love. But, you know, Stefan Nason. Hopefully, not gonna kill you.
And by the way, it is icing. Hopefully, Marner no. Marner is gonna have to stay out there, isn't he? I wanna know what these new look lines are. I I guess Barube felt like he wasn't seeing it from patch already with Marner Matthews.
Again, I ask you, when are we gonna switch up the Marner Matthews? When are we gonna change that around? This is rough. This is rough. Oh, Stahler's with the puck kind of squeezes out the net.
The Devils are out at shooting the Leafs 5 times the Leafs amount of shots. Almost. So the Devils get 1 more shot here. You could divide the amount of devil shots by 5, and you would have the Leafs amount of shots. 5 shots 5 devil shots for every 1 Leafs shot is not a recipe for, like, success.
And I'm just feeling like maybe the Leafs could be like, we're good and we should probably turn this around. Because they are good, and they are better than this, and this is ridiculous. So there is Nies with Lorenz. I gotta see who else is out there on this line. Lorentz has gotta be loving this.
So Nies, Lorentz, Domi. Interesting. That's an it's a high energy line. There's a line that's not fun to play against potentially. Domee with a nice little turnover in the zone there.
He hasn't had much to write home about tonight, but I I I love seeing his speed back in the lineup. You know, underrated thing. The Leafs are not a very fast team. They're kinda slow and lugging. They always sorta have been.
That's an offside, or is it an icing? Well, it doesn't matter. Looks like it's an icing. Having water bug type speed the way that Domi does is kinda actually really important for them. Oh, by the way, the Leafs do not have 5 shots anymore.
They have disallowed oh, no. Did yeah. They have disallowed 2 of the Leafs shots, so we're back down to 4 shots for the Leafs. Oh my god. Oh my god.
Are you kidding me? You know what sucks about this too? I'll be honest with you. I'm just gonna let you peek behind the curtain here for a second. As a podcaster that so closely covers this team, there's nothing worse than a game like this where the Leafs are, like, unexplainably bad, and you gotta get on and go, what do we say about it?
Right? You know, what if you were putting tomorrow's show together, Devils, I believe, just got another shot. Oh, that didn't look good. Is he hurt? He went down like he was hurt.
I think that's a hooking call. Tatar, it's a bit of a sell. That's a sales job. Did did Tanev get a penalty there? If you were putting together if you were putting together, the show tomorrow, and all that is available to you is to this point of the game, what would you say about the leaves?
What would you say to set Jesse and Steve up for success as as a host that leads a conversation? Because that's my struggle sometimes. It's like, what am I gonna say here that is gonna bring out something we haven't thought about, that's entertaining, that you know, look, what are we gonna do? And I don't know what you do with this, because this is now 4th this is now the 5th game in a row where I don't think they've been that good. Is there a trend developing here?
Brock Bester says talk about a different team. Well, Brock, we will be talking about those Vancouver Canucks because Thatcher Demko is playing tonight. I don't know how he's doing. Maybe we do a little out of town scoreboard here. The Colorado Avalanche are up 3 to 1 over the Pittsburgh Penguins.
No shock. San Jose Sharks up 2 to 1 over the Carolina hurricanes. Man, Carolina has been so good this year. The Sharks better hold on with both both hands and teeth. Philadelphia is up 3 nothing over Columbus in the second in the and the Kings are up 1 nothing over the New York Islanders.
Calgary, tied with the Nashville Predators in the first. Winnipeg and Boston have yet to kick off, and I think we're we're looking for Tampa Bay, Edmonton play at 9, Minnesota, Utah at 9:30, St. Louis, Vancouver at 10, Florida, Seattle at 10 o'clock. So we have no Thatcher Damco. Also yeah.
Oh, Hayden, don't make me bring that up. Please, god. No. Hayden Hayden is gonna bring Hayden is bringing up something that I know is rage bait, but it's kinda hilarious, and I will I will give it to you. But I'm not gonna do it right now only because the game just started back.
Tatar sells this, Like, he have you ever seen somebody get high stick in the face and then jump up? No wonder the ref didn't call that. That was embarrassing. Jamie Richardson says, Domi and Reeves need to drop the gloves. Leafs need a spark.
I don't know if oh, god. That that Tatarsale job, I cannot believe that. I can't believe the Leafs are on a p k again. Yeah. Oh, nice little turnaround here.
Austin Matthews with the steal. Oh, boy. That was close. And and that is officially, I believe, our 5th shot of the game. They can't take that 1 away from us.
Guys, the Leafs have 5 shots. The Leafs have 5 shots. The Leafs have 5 shots with 5 exact minutes to go in the second period. 125 left on the power play. 5 shots for the Leafs.
I guess the great thing about the power play is the Leafs can just dump it down and, that it's not icing. That seems to be the only thing they're able to do right now. Hogwash, optimistic outlook. Did you see the Leafs actually won their 9 shot game back in 1999? So you could say we're on the right track.
You know what hogwash? I would say that's likely hogwash, but, hey, I love the hopeful angle. I love it. Brgr says, I blame Zarlie Zalewski. Might be the best name in NHL history.
5 shot party, everybody. Get your get get your hands together for 5 shots. Leafs won for nothing in the game where they they had 9 shots in 1999. That is bonkers over Saint Louis. Berube's been here too long.
He's lost the room. They need a new voice. That's huge, jacked man. That's funny. That's funny.
I think they do need to break up the lines a little bit, and it looks like he's doing that. I believe Matthews and Marner might be split up. I'm not totally sure, but I feel like they should do that more often. There's Lawrence. 8 seconds left on the New Jersey power play.
New Jersey has 5 times the amount of shots the Toronto Maple Leafs do, actually more so. They have 26 shots. The Leafs have 5. That's a it's a rough it's a rough stat. They have 5.2 times the amount of shots the Leafs have.
Arisha says, Matthew's not playing well today or in general. I think he's still hurt. This is why they need another center. If he is still hurt by the way, he's played pretty well since coming back, scored, and produced, and, oh, we got a shot to the face there. Siegenthaler just took a nasty 1.
That looks like it's just a stinger, but my god. That cannot be fun. Let's see what happened here. Okay. It was off the helmet.
Okay. Doesn't make it feel good. That happened to Jake McCabe, and he hasn't played since a couple weeks ago, but at least it wasn't right on the noggin, like, right in the face. Robert Bet, you know some idiot in Boston is laughing. Well, listen.
Of course. Yeah. So Matthews is definitely still a little bit hurt, but I think he wants to play, and I think it's it's probably an injury that you can't heal during the regular season. It's probably 1 of those ones that you're just gonna have to manage that, manage pain. Lots of players have that.
Canadian girl 83, I have a hab I have a lab husky mix, and she'll put a few goals in for the the net for the leaf. She will chase a puck around the ring for entertainment. Well, we could use her. We need chaos in front of the net. Dogs distracting hockey players, it's never been tried.
It's genius. 252 left in the, 2nd period. The Leafs have 6 shots. The Devils now only have 25. Looks like they were docked a shot probably because they're smelly.
Greg l, Adam, serious question. When does, Stallars get Vesna consideration? What does he have to do? He has to keep doing what he's doing. But we're a little early in the season to be talking about that.
Remember, goalies have good months. They have good bunches of months. The Vesna goes to the guy that really puts it together every month. And you also have to remember too that the Vesna, like the Norris, sometimes is a reputational award. A lot of the people voting on this probably haven't seen him play.
And so if you have a Hellobuck or a Shesterkin, have an unbelievable year. And Hellobuck's been amazing, or at least until recently. Reputation plays a lot into these votes. So sometimes it doesn't come down to how well they played. Sometimes it comes down to, well, we got a tie, so the tie goes to the guy who's regularly here.
Right? Not to the new guy. Whereas it's interesting with the coaching award, the Jack Adams, it usually goes to the new guy. It's like, oh, we didn't expect you to be good and you are. You get the Jack Adams, and then that guy gets fired the next year because that's usually what happens with the Jack Adams award.
You win it, and a year and a half later, you're fired. 147 left in the second period, and, you know, that coffee felt good. I needed that coffee, and I just feel like we, as a group, are committed. You are watching a second stream of 1 of the worst Leaf games we've seen this season, probably this decade. And the Leafs just got another shot, 7 shots.
No. They were docked a shot. That will be their 6th shot. Why can't the shot counters decide what a shot is? Now we're back up to 6 shots.
We've been to 6 shots 2 times already in this game, but they've been docking the shots. Hamilton takes the oh, big hit by Matthew Nye's on I think that's Jack Hughes. Holy moly. That was a monster. Oh, no.
That was patch ready. Oh, baby. He crushed him. Wow. Listen.
Whatever it takes to get you going, man. Patchereddy Tavares back together. I kinda like that. I'm glad that they're doing that. Let's see a replay of this.
Baby. So Tavares kinda knocked down by Hamilton there, and then oh my god. Listen. The fact that nobody fought Patch already, oh my god. That was a monster.
So McDermott is probably not in for the doubles according to Hayden. He's their tough guy, but this is so this is a problem for the doubles. This is a problem for the doubles, and they've played a near perfect game, so I'm picking. But you can't let Jack Hughes get hit like that, and it was a clean hit without at least going shaking the guy or something. I'm not saying you have to fight every time.
It was a clean hit, but, you need some sort of response. You need some sort of and that's just not what the Devils are. But that's a problem. Like, the Leafs were not that either, and that became a problem for them. That's that was bonkers, man.
Wow. That was a hit. Patches throws throws them, They've missed his physicality in the lineup. I know it hasn't really shown up on the score sheet for him, but I don't think you you judge Max Patcharetti at this point by the amount of points, although not insignificant. If he gets about half a point a game, I'm happy.
He is a monster body who throws a monster body. 27 seconds left in the second period. Mitch Marter turn it around. Nice little outfeed pass to Minton, and it doesn't go anywhere. Paragon says, Keef's devil's responding just like Keef's Leafs by not responding.
It's kinda true. And that was frustrating, man. I can't lie. 5 seconds to go in the second period. Will the Leafs get their 7th shot?
No. They will not. Well, listen. Here's what I'll say about the 2nd period. The Leafs came in with 1 shot and they got 5 more.
So if you only look at the Leaf side of this, that's not bad. But, the Devils got another 10 shots and outplayed them again. Anthony Stallars has been spectacular. Respect the hell out of it. Oh, is oh, so Tristan Jari's up to his old tricks.
He's just bad tonight. Okay. Alright. I just saw a couple of highlights from what happened there. The Leafs are are really bad.
Megachronic is saying 6 shots total, LOL. Yeah, man. They're having 1 of those nights. It's bad. 5 shots in the period, 6 shots total.
1 shot guys in the 1st period. The Toronto Maple Leafs with Matthews, Nylander, Marner, Tavares had 1 shot in the first. 5 in the second, dare I say 8 or 9 in the 3rd? Oh, could it be? Or if you use math, the Leafs had 5 times the amount of shots in the second period that they had in the first.
So that means in the 3rd period, they're due if, you know, the trend sticks for 25 more shots. And that would bring them to 31 shots, which is about normal for a game. Wow. Warrior Wump, Hughes got exercise with that hit. Yes.
Regan Bender, has anyone checked on Steve? You know what? I'll text him out. Steve. The chat wants to know you know what?
Why don't I just call him? Call Steve Dangle Glen. Calling Steve Dangle Glen Mobile. Alright. We'll just do a quick call, and then we're gonna run our intermission here.
Hello?
Hey. Hey. What's up? Chat wants to know how you're doing.
Oh, you're streaming?
Yeah.
Oh, man. I'm so glad I answered with hey.
You know?
I'm doing I'm doing okay. I I need listen. 1 of 2 things is gonna happen tonight for LFR.
Mhmm.
Number 1, I carve them. This is 5 straight mediocre games, mediocre to bad games.
Yep.
Even though they won the first 2, they were against sub NHL talent. Yep. You should have beat them. You you know, you think for even having that game be close.
Yep.
The other option is the Leafs win, and I laugh and laugh and laugh at Sheldon Keith for essentially repeating over the course of an hour, the overtime from game 6 against Montreal. Shot. Shot. Shot. Shot.
Shot. Nothing for a freaking works.
Yeah. And then Bad giveaway in the net.
Bad giveaway in the net. They've almost done it 3 times. And the only thing driving me absolutely insane is Craig is just out here button mashing. Yeah. Like, he's he's I'm gonna put this guy.
He's done everything except break up Matthews and Marner.
Which which I think they need to do.
Yeah. You and I don't know what kind of Vladimir Putin compromise these guys have on every coach and executive in the sport. Oh my god. They just showed the patch already hit again.
It's a monster. Right? Yeah. I just saw it. Wow.
You know what blew me away? But just as an aside here, nobody from the Devils really even wrestled them.
Softest team in the league. No. They're brutal. They got Brendan Dillon, and thank god they did. And, I think they have who is it?
Curtis McDermott?
Yeah. But he's not playing tonight.
He's not Or no.
It's Zach McQue is it Zach McQue and or Curtis McDermott? I don't know. I remember. It's McDermott. McDermott.
It's McDermott.
Those guys.
Yep. Those generic goons. Right? Like and and, no. They've this is why I thought Sheldon King was the perfect coach for this team.
The devils are just, like, a different version of the Leafs, honestly.
Right. You could tell that they're doing a lot of rush chances too. Right? Like, that seems to be their thing.
Yeah. I I feel like they're just, like, a slightly differently constructed version of the Leafs. They don't have the big deals that the Leafs do, so they're able to get a little more depth. You know, I'm sure Keith is loving having guys like Palat and Nathan and friggin' Meyer, but they are baby, baby lotion soft. Yeah.
And, hey, I have a question. Patch already killed Jack Hughes. Mhmm. There was no penalty. Why'd the whistle go?
Yeah. Why did the whistle go?
Why'd the whistle go? It 2 minutes. It's like Benoit just got, Benoit got 2 minutes for what? Delay of
Game.
Game? Oh, okay. How about you put your arm up? What just happened there?
Yeah.
What just happened there? Clean hit clean hit, and you glue the whistle for what? Fun?
Now, Steve, last question because I I'm gonna go to break, and I don't I want you to save some of this for the LFR. K? I wanna save some of this for the LFR.
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
People are asking, can you do a a Ken Danico, can you do a Ken Danico tee up for the 3rd period?
Well, Adam, I gotta tell you, even though the New Jersey Devils have dominated this game, Max Pacheretti dominated Jack Hughes, their emotional leader and best player, and no 1 stood up for them. I think that's gonna devastate them heading into the 3rd period, and the Leafs should come back and steamroll them if nothing is done to avenge Jack Hughes. My name's Ken Danico, and this has been my breakdown brought to you by the New Jersey State Lottery. Remember, anything can happen in Jersey.
Well done. Well done. People are absolutely loving it in the chat, so thank you for bringing it. And, by the way, STPN is saying, I disagree with Steve here. The players stopped playing and the whistle was blown because they all needed to stop and admire Patchettty's hit because it was so beautiful.
See, this is how I know Justin is on
the chat.
Yes.
Anything could happen in Jersey. Anything. Steve, thanks for making time, buddy.
Hey. Don't forget to become an STP VIP.
Because anything could happen on VIP. Anything could happen on VIP. Alright. We're gonna go to break. Steve, we love you.
We'll talk to you soon, buddy.
Alright. I'll see you later.
Alright. Hayden, roll that clip, partner, and I'll be back for the start of the 3rd period. Talk some hockey with a hockey player and somebody that you guys all saw today. Not Hey. Right.
So ladies and gentlemen, please bring up or look, please welcome Kingston Frodniak, second round pick of the Calgary Flames, Jacob Battaglia. Alright. So welcome buddy.
Yeah, it feels good. Good welcoming. Yeah.
How does it feel like? Are you cool now? Like we were talking backstage and you were all confident. How do you feel now that they're all looking at you?
Yeah. It's okay. I mean, I don't know. I like their faces. Good smiles.
Yeah. There you go. Alright.
What a charmer. That's awesome. So so listen. I have a couple of things. Greatness seems to hail from Mississauga because you're from Mississauga and so is Jesse Blake.
Whoo. So, any anybody else from Mississauga here just for We owe what? We owe what? Hell, yeah.
We owe what? I wasn't expecting anyone.
So let let me ask you this, what have you loved about moving to Kingston from from Mississauga? Had you been to Kingston before?
No. I've never been up here, but, yeah. I came here about 2 years ago in my rookie year and, yeah. I mean, it's pretty nice spot, like, a lot of good spots downtown, like, great people, great city. My billets are awesome, so they made it pretty much like I'm living back in Mississauga.
So, yeah. It's really nice.
Are your billets here?
No. No. They're not here tonight. But you know it's Richard.
Oh, how do
you know Richard? Oh, is
Richard like a big deal?
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
He's a guy. Yeah. I just thought it was like, wow, is Richard like a celebrity?
Get him out for Richard.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, he's gonna love that. He's gonna love that. You gotta
you're gonna have to show
him that.
He's gonna love that.
So so listen, like, a couple of months ago, you're at Calgary Flames training camp. And I think everybody in this room that ever played hockey once would kill to be in that position, even if it was just an invite. Tell us what it was like.
Yeah. I mean, it's definitely a different level than the OHL. I think just how everything's run and and the facilities and the coaches and the players is just I don't know. It's it's next level. Way faster game.
I think the guys are all massive. Like, their quads are the size of my head. Like, it's insane. It's like
Who had the biggest quads? Is there anybody that sticks out on that team?
Oh, probably Kevin Ball. He's the soccer guy too, but, yeah, he's huge. Yeah.
He's a soccer boy.
667, like, 2 40. Like, he's just, like, nowhere near that guy whatsoever. But
Svelte. Yeah. Petite. Yes.
Just tiny. Yeah. It was it was, pretty cool experience. All, like, a lot of OHL guys there, so they made it pretty nice. Like, you know, a lot of guys, like, they made the experience, pretty cool.
Like it's nice when you get to know and you can talk to guys and like feel comfortable that they're also in the same position as you are. So, yeah, I know it was it was awesome.
So that that actually like kind of became a topic, with I I think it was Colby Barlow and NHL camp versus OHL camp. For for you, what was it like the transition from NHL camp and then did did you participate in France camp?
Or was it
straight to games? Yeah.
I was here.
So so what was that like? Because I know the feedback is that that's a lot of camp Yeah. Heading into a full season of games.
Yeah. It's a lot of a lot of practicing, a lot of working out, a lot of fitness testing. So, yeah. I mean it was it was pretty hard on the body like go to Kingston, fitness test, practice, play some exhibition games, and go right to Calgary then you're just redoing everything, but I mean way harder, like way harder, way more intense. And then finally I came back, and got right into the season, but yeah I mean it's just, yeah a lot of practicing, a lot of work, you know it's pretty tough on you.
The the Calgary guys that you got to interact with in the locker room, some of the pros, all of them good dudes?
Oh yeah. They're I mean they're just hockey guys right? So it's like you're in the room with them like they just treat you like you're you're a teammate so yeah. They're they're awesome guys there. Really nice.
So 1 of the things that, we're talking to Jacob backstage before the, before the show guys and 1 of the things that, I thought was really cool, is that your dad comes to every single home game for the France to watch you play and has for now 2 and a half years.
Yeah. He,
And he lives in Mississauga.
Yeah. I
think it's a round of applause. Right?
Come on. Yeah.
That's a dad right there. Was he the 1 driving you to 6 AM practice and
Oh, yeah.
And hall like like where would you go for tournaments when
you're in the GTHL? Like how far would you go? Man I think we had a spring tournament in Chicago and we drove there and then we had 1 in Boston we drove there too. Like he was just it was just something to look forward to because he put so much time and and effort and and money into me. He just, like, wants to go see the product.
I mean, like, he just, like, it's like an investment, so he just wanna see that that it was working. But, yeah, I mean, he he makes a trip all the time because he's, like, and he loves it. He looks forward to every Friday coming up, like, gives him something to do, like, get out of the house, come up, watch watch me, talk to me after, see all the other dads that that come up as well. But, yeah, he makes it super special. My mom likes to come to to the games that are a little closer because she's a she's a stay at home mom, she's just always busy with my brothers and my dogs.
So Are your brothers good too? No. No. No. They're not.
Not at all. No.
Did they try to be good?
They're, I don't know. My older brother, like, we started, like so he started when he was 6. I started when I was 4. And he was so jealous of me, like, like, he'd, like, prey on my downfall if I scored a goal. Like, you'd be pissed after the game if I scored.
Well, that's what brothers are for. Right? Yeah.
That's where you get that competitive edge.
Yeah. But no. They were not even close to being good. Like yeah. I don't know.
They Is that what what brothers are for and all?
It is. Every time every time, like, a player makes the NHL and then they have a younger brother coming up, they're like, oh, no. But he's even better. Even if it's, like, wildly not true.
Yeah. Exactly. Not even close. He had
no choice but to just accept it. Just
accept it.
That Miles better.
Yeah. Yeah. I know.
And I I can feel the room asking it. Even more. I can feel, everyone listening and watching online. Your dad's name's not Bates.
No. No. It's that's not my dad. I get it a lot. I've started to go along with it a little bit.
Yeah. Yeah. But, yeah. No. It's that's not my dad.
Oh. No.
So the name Battaglia, obviously, Leaf fans know it. If you're a Canes fan, you'd know it. That sort of thing. Yeah. Steve needs to ask the Italian question.
How does your family say it?
Like, I don't know. My dad, like, it's it's like when you go to an Italian restaurant, it's like you speak in English and all of a sudden you order, like, I'll get this spaghetti. It's like, go on. Like, settle down. Like, it's like my dad, like, when he says you're like Battaglia.
Oh,
it is. Battaglia.
Yeah. But it's like everyone just says Bataglia. Like, it's just easier. Like, it rolls off the tongue.
And they they call you Bates for fun. Right?
Yeah. Just like just because of Bates Battaglia, I guess. Just threw that in there. But, yeah, I've had it my whole life, so I just kinda stuck with it. Like, I don't I don't even get called Jacob ever really.
Like, it just just Bates. Yeah.
Just Oh my god.
It's like my first name now.
So You
can't escape it. Well, I
heard it in there. Like, you said, hey, Bates. Yeah. Look up. I'm like, but you're not.
No. I'm not. I'm not him at all.
You No.
How did you You're related. How did you score that playoff OT winner for the Marlies for only
3? Like,
oh, my God. No. That's, there's more than 1 Bataglia Yeah. Family. Wow.
Wow. Good to know.
That's great.
No. We just we needed to check that because, you know, the Italians among us. Are they any Italian, heritage here? Any? Any?
Hey. It's it's Kempeel guy and 1 of the bartender
starters. Somebody behind the bar. Yeah.
Yeah. It's really important to Italians you pronounce that name correctly.
Oh, yeah. Yeah.
Well, if someone ordered lasagna, you'd look at them sideways.
So okay. So this year, you guys have a great team.
Yeah. Yeah. We do.
Do they not have a great team?
That's a
great team.
That's a great team. Yeah. And I'm watching that power play today. It really was amazing cycle work. Like, the fact is, like, you you gotta remember, like, I'm double your age.
Right? Which is scary. I'm 36. He's 18. Like, oh, my God.
Kill me. And and, and watching you guys set up in cycle. I'm, like, these guys were kids, like, 2 seconds ago. I cannot believe how how they're moving it around. And what's amazing about the way you guys run that power play is all of a sudden, it's, like, okay.
We're done now. In. Yeah. In on the net. This coach for you guys and and for those who don't know, he's the guy that took over for Luca Caputi.
Name is?
Troy Mann.
Troy really changed the trajectory of your career.
Yeah.
And and I wanna know a little bit about that because, you know, at this age as we all know, we all have mentors and that sort of thing in our various lives, that 1 adult outside of your family can kinda change your life. Exactly. Yeah. How has Troy done that for you?
Yeah. I mean, beginning of last year with Lucas still as a coach, I was kinda struggling, like, wasn't really getting the ice time I thought, like, I deserved and I thought, like, I knew I had always more to give at the end of games. I was like, even if I had, like, a goal or maybe an assist, like, I was still, like, pretty pissed off because I knew, like, I had more. Like, I wasn't tired after games. Like, I I knew I had more to give.
Like, I worked hard in the summer and I was like, what was the point of that? Like, I'm not using any of it. So, as soon as Troy came in, like, he saw something in me and he believed in me just, like, having the coach to to believe in you just, like, made me play with so much more confidence, maybe be myself, like, even around the rink, like, I was able to be myself, like, be a better room guy, like, you know, crack jokes, like, make the guys laugh. So, yeah, he he was awesome for me, and he still is. Like, still believes in me.
He has a lot bunch of trust in me. So just having that game in, game out, even on practice days, like, just always believing in believing in me, and he's he's hard on me, which which sometimes he do does need to be when I turn over the puck, like, 6 times in the first period. So, yeah, he's pretty tough
on me.
No. No. No. No. Today was a good 1.
But, yeah, he's pretty tough on me, but, I mean, he's he's awesome. He believes in me and gives me the confidence to play with, that that makes me
the player I am. So we know sometimes, like, NHL coaches what they do to punish guys when when they're upset. Right? What is what's an OHL coach do? Like, what's what's punishment when he's mad at at you you guys collectively as a team, as you as a player, you know, he wants to send a message.
How does Troy Mann do that?
Cut to the chase. Let me see your phone. Yeah.
Does he go through your pics?
No. No. No. No. He's not.
No. No. Not that.
That was good. That's great.
Sorry. Adam's question was better.
By the way, I love I love how quickly you got.
Yeah. Yeah. No. Yeah. I know I know that 1.
No. He didn't
Really under the radar story.
Yeah. That would I imagine that would that would register with
a hockey player. Go
ahead. Sorry. Yeah. I mean, if we're having a bad practice, like, just get on the line, like, you're just just go, like, bag skate. Oh, yeah.
But it's never unjustified. Like, if if we're bag skating, it's like, wow, we're really bad today. But, like, yeah for me it's more just like call me in his office just like talk me show me some video like rip me a little bit but he knows like I can handle it like he's pretty comfortable with like like getting pretty pissed at me and it's like I know like sometimes they don't have to say anything I'll just look at him and be like yeah that was shit, like you know what I mean? Like he just he knows, I know, but yeah if we're like if we're a bad collective as a group, just bag skater like a good old ripping, like an intermission, like just like turning purple, like just ripping us. Yeah, just like ripping us, like but yeah.
No. He's pretty he's pretty good with that stuff. Like, he's usually pretty positive. Like, even if we're having a bad game, like, when it's really bad, it's, like, I don't even, like, hide your face.
We're back, and we're back a little bit late, but that's because Steve gave us a great phone call with a great Ken Danico impression. And how much do we love, Jacob Battaglia? That kid is hilarious, man. He was great. Really nice guy too.
Talking backstage with him in Kingston, I just loved him. By the way, 1931 left in the first. By and here's the other thing. In the 20 seconds of 3rd period that we missed, the devils got 2 more shots, so they're out shooting the leaves 27 to 6. Will the devils get to 30 shots before the leaves get to 10?
That's our new our new challenge. Chat, tell me. Are we going are we going with the devils with this 1 or the Leafs with this 1? The Leafs get to 10 shots, the Devils get to 30. Which 1 happens first?
Do the Leafs even who was the person earlier who said over under in the Leafs getting 15 shots? Because I think you're probably I think we're going under. I hope you chose under. Man, I love Jacob Battaglia wishing him all the best, 2nd round pick. Just loved doing that interview.
He was great. We've had 2 great Jacobs, for our OHL interviews this year. Jacob Moster for the, Ochsua generals, Jacob Battaglia for the Kingston Frontenac. Just good good people. Oh, here we go.
Nice little drive into the net frame, Morgan Riley. I gotta respect him for making something happen. You know? I gotta respect him for many reasons. I'd love to know, Marc Andre Muriel says, Adam, stop hating on the Ducks.
Okay. Here's what I gotta say. The Ducks' jerseys are bad, and they should feel bad about them. Sorry. Am I am I supposed oh, I'm supposed to stop hating on the Ducks.
The Ducks are bad. But I actually kinda like the true betrayed for them. I know that's weird, and people are like, why would they do that? Because they're gonna deal them. It's a smart move.
Give them credit. Robert Bet, at least the Bruins are losing. Listen. Life's always better when the Bruins are losing. Everybody in the Atlantic division can agree on that.
What's that, Hayden? You did? Oh, okay. Hang on. Let me have a look.
Apparently, there's an image of me on the screen. I can see it. Oh, is that the expected goals? Do you see how deep into the the game the Leafs it to even lift off at, like, 0.2%? God, that's so bad.
Drew, thank you for sending that. That's so bad. That's so bad. That is embarrassing. Now I know, like, hockey players are not, like, I'm not, like, really a stats guy.
You're lying. You're a huge stats guy. Every hockey player is a stats guy. This is bad. And I know expected goals isn't a perfect stat, but kinda does a pretty good job of explaining some things.
And, yeah, the at 0.88, they're a William Nylander in in the worst way. This is bad. Stolars with a save there. Does that mean that Devils hit ladies and gentlemen, the Devils hit 30 shots before the Leafs hit 10. It happened.
It freaking happened. It's the Leafs have somehow, Anthony Stollars has only allowed the doubles 1 1 goal. The Leafs can win this game. This is a completely this is the craziest part about this game. It's a completely winnable game.
With 8 shots, the Leafs could win this game. And they've had actual opportunities to score too, like Matthews had a couple, in alone on Markstrom. They can win this game. Gonna have to start scoring. Gonna actually have to get the puck in to the offensive zone.
You know what I'm saying? This it is. Like, it it it like, you're laughing at me. I see you in the chat. I know you're laughing at me.
It is absolutely a winnable game. It is. That's what's so nuts. What's what what's going on? Justin in the, on the STPN chat chat, we're looking at this all wrong.
How funny would it be if Toronto still wins? They easily could. They easily could. This could that could easily happen. Even with the way they've been playing, if Matthews scores on 1 of those on the 1 of those plays, which he normally does, he had a 2 on 1 and then he had a couple, you know, break ins or whatever, he easily could have scored on 1 of those and we have a tie game.
Now are they getting cooked? Sure. I I guess this might be the most offensive zone pressure we've seen them have all game. It's been behind the devil's net. It won't be helpful in the expected goals department, but it's offensive zone pressure.
We we have not seen that all game. Look at that. And there's board play, and they're and they won the board battle, and it's out to the and Myers shoots it in and Matthews has a shot. Or was that nice? And Matthews hit the hit, and then a pinch by Myers.
Maybe not the best pinch, but not gonna kill you. First line. Good shift. And, by the way, thank you for putting Matthew Nye with Matthew, Austin Matthews and Mitch Marner. We all love we want that.
We love that. Let's make that the line. Why are we why are we pretending it's anybody else? Oh, and it looks like the Leafs just drew
a penalty. You know why? Because they were putting offensive zone pressure on the New Jersey Devils. Anything can happen in the New Jersey Devils zone. Okay?
Here we go. We got some momentum. We're cooking. Come on.
A bit of a trip. Okay. Not that listen. That's not the heaviest call. Like, Luke Hughes is not going to the box in the playoffs on that, but it's not the playoffs.
It's a Tuesday in December. Clock check-in just a second here. I just can't do it. I can now. 1558.
30 shots, Devils, 9 Leafs. At 1 point, the Devils were out shooting the Leafs 5 times the amount of shots the Leafs had. Now it's only 3 times. So I would say things are changing. Tavares, Matthews, Nielander, Riley, and I can't see who's on the point, but I'm assuming it's Marner.
Tavares loses the draw on the offensive zone. Okay. Ma Morgan Riley, though, is able to stop the stop a full ice, dump. So Nies is no longer on the unit, on that first unit. He'll probably come out for the second unit.
And that's likely because, first off, it doesn't make sense to not have Morgan Riley out there. I'd like to see OEL with Domi and, Nye's and Pacheretti. Like, there's some finish there. There's something there. It's not perfect, but it's it's not bad.
And, also, let's be honest. This first line is gonna get a ton of power play time, and the devils are doing man, look at Hughes. Just a great job of breaking up the Leafs right at the blue line too. You have to give them a lot of like, you have to respect it. Like, it's good solid defense.
They're they're crowding the lines. They're stopping them up at the blue line. They're stopping them up at the red line. Watch. When see, Nielandor just went across the blue line there, and there were 4 devils within 2 skate legs of them.
Like, that is that is a great that is a great way to to just choke a power play. They're doing a great job. Mike Johnson saying on TV that the Leafs should call a power a timeout. That's interesting. I think he might be onto something, because the Devils have got their number on this.
Oh. Okay. Patch already. Over to the point, trying to find somebody. OEL to Nylander on the low boards.
Domee deep out to OEL. Let's get a shot here, folks. Domee with the shot. Bruy has been telling him to shoot, and it was high. Hey.
At least he shot. We're gonna need somebody to finish, though. I think, listen. Domi, give him full marks, man. He's looked engaged and ready to play tonight, and the Leafs have not, and Domi is the guy who's missed a month.
Oh, here we go. We actually got some chaos in front of that, and look at that who it is. It's Matthew Nye's causing it. OEL over to shut. Neil in over the shot.
Oh, power play is over, but the offensive zone pressure continues for the Leafs. They're a little bit gassed at the end of the shift here. Wow. 1336. 10 shots for the Leafs, 30 for the Devils, and, yes, this game pretty much can be summed up by the shot counter.
That said, the Leafs showing a little bit of sign of life here, and they've only had 1 goal against the entire game. 1321 left. There's plenty of time to tie it. There's plenty of time to win it. Boy, there was a there's good chances on that power play.
I know a lot of those didn't count as shots, but damn. But damn. I'm looking at this I'm looking at the comments here, and there are some really down and negative leaf fans and non leaf fans who are down on the leafs. Everybody's getting a little down, little neg, little negative. And I don't think you should be.
Listen. The first and the second period, they happened, they sucked, they're over. They're done. Rear view mirror. What's ahead of you?
13 minutes and 21 seconds. You just had a power play that you did pretty well on. I mean, yeah, the first part of it wasn't great. Let's be honest. The first minute, you kinda blew it.
But then after that, I don't know. Like, I I feel like they can do this. Don't you feel like they can do this? Sean Page, 600 people. We need likes, Adam.
Sean has been my like king all the can can you throw us a like? Not for me. Don't do it for me. Do it for Sean. Sean Sean Page needs you to like this video more than I do.
Needs it from you. There's trivia here? Where's the trivia? Oh 0, by the way, Robert Betts, security will have to frisk for weapons when he gets to the dressing room after the game. But if they win, I have trivia from, Hayden here that I can get to.
Hang on, Hayden. I'm bringing it up. Why? There you are. I had so many Hayden emailed me this stat sheet very early, like a very prepared producer.
And by the way, Hayden just moved. And so he's gone through a whole move and he's still doing this stream. God bless him. We love him. I have some trivia for you guys at the next stoppage.
It'll be fun. Let's see what the Leafs do now with 1308 left in the game. Devils have lost a shot. We're now down to 30. Boy, the the shots people are very particular tonight.
And the reason we're paying really close attention to the shot clock is because the Leafs didn't have any. 1 shot in the 1st period. People tuning in late to the stream are shocked by this, but 1 shot in the first period. Yucky Cockapoo. K?
That's what we gotta say. That's the dictionary definition for 1 shot. Yucky Cockapoo. Gross. Alright.
Here comes Marner. Oh. 0, man. I think he just jumped over Matthew Stick. Marner had a really good little, forecheck there.
They're they're showing signs of life, guys. Signs of life. Mercer with a shot on Stahlers. I'm assuming that that's gonna count, and the doubles will be up back up to 30 shots. So here we go.
Trivia. What goaltender is tied with Marty Brodeur for the most wins in a single season? Which goaltender? Is it Braden Holtby? Is it Roberto Luongo?
Or is it Bernie Perrant? Drop it in the chat. Rayton Holtby, Roberto Luongo, Bernie Perrant. What do we think? Somebody just said Garrett spot Sparks.
No. It was not. 32 shots for the Devils, 10 for the Leafs. Yuck. Just yuck.
I gotta know what happens when you'd when oh, I think that was offside. Yeah. It was. And by the way, yes, you're right. It's Braden Holtby.
48 wins in a season. Can you believe that happened? 48 wins. That's just that's just an insane number. And I also think it's interesting that, you know hold on.
Braden Holtby, what season did he do that in? Let's just look that up because I'm pretty sure Yeah. Okay. Wins, wins, wins, 48. Yeah.
He did that in a season where the Capitals didn't win the Stanley Cups. So they had a goalie with almost 50 wins on his own, and they didn't win the cup. They didn't even win the cup the next year. They won it the year that nobody thought they were gonna win it, which was 17/18. Everybody's like, ah, their pass are prime.
Nope. Oh, here we go. Nice little pass up to Nylander. Past Luke Hughes in the offensive zone. Although Luke does strip Nylander of the puck, it squirts back out.
I think that's Tanav and Riley out there. I don't know if it's Myers. Tavares, Nylander in behind the net. Not a lot of support for Tavares. They're always putting 2 men on the puck, when the Leafs are in are in the devil zone, and it's working for them.
They got the foot speed to do it. Nice little play. The Leafs will get an offensive zone face off. The Leafs get their 11th shot. Can we Justin, can we get an 11 shot party?
Yay. 11 shots. That's Max Domi's number. Woo. Yay.
Yay. Listen. I'm I'm positive. I'm feeling good. I'm having coffee.
It's Tim Hortons coffee, by the way. Sometime sponsor of the Steve Dangle podcast, that's Tim Hortons. And, 11 minutes left in this game. I would like to manifest the Leafs' goal. I'd like to manifest it.
I'd like to put it out there in the universe. I think the Leafs are gonna score in the next 5 minutes. I think it's gonna happen. Maybe before the 6 minute mark. Maybe, like, maybe with, like, 5 minutes to go, Leafs score.
Don't you think? Or maybe that's when they get their 2nd goal because they're gonna score here, putting on offensive zone pressure. Again, the Matthews Marner, Nies line doing a great job. They're keeping the puck in. Marner keeps it in because Nies was able to knock a guy off.
Nies just crushed the devil. Just crushed him and look at the devils. Just doing nothing about it. Doing nothing. Okvasevich is down, and the devils were like, we're gonna give you a hug.
I don't think that was a dirty play either. Oh, Timmins is chirping him. Timmins is yeah. Timmins is chirping Kova Savage. Oh, baby.
I think it was a clean hit. No. They're not gonna put him in the box for that. What happened here? This is great ozone pressure, by the way.
Oh, yeah. Okay. It was on the numbers. He didn't know he was there. Okay.
Boarding. Yep. Okay. Yeah. That's a penalty.
It's a penalty. Now did Kobacevich sell that like a used car salesman? Absolutely. He got right back up. That's why Timmons was chirping him.
It's the NHL. Stay on your feet. But yeah. Like Steve always says Steve Dangle says, go down like you're dead, and he did. And that doesn't take away from the fact that that's a penalty every time because it is, but he sold it.
And I guess, you know what? Good for him. Now 148 left, maybe the least you get a 2 on 1 on this PK because they have had a couple, in this game. The Devils have just such a great free flowing power play. I really love the way they get set up.
I love how quickly they move the puck around. I love their foot speed. The 1 thing Sheldon Sheldon keeps good at is a team like this. Soft as hell, but boy can they skate. Holy moly.
Off the post with Jack Hughes. So we got Lorenz, Tanev, Benoit, and Marner out there. I'm assuming that now we got 4:45 seconds into this power play. I'm assuming that their legs are starting to burn at this point. And I would think they wanna get a change here if they can just get a face off.
Oh, and Holla messes it up. So they are they are gonna be able to change, but it's gonna have to be a quick 1, because the Devils do not slow down for anyone on the power play. Nice little break up there. Holmberg stops it up. Stoller standing tall.
The puck is still loose somehow, and it is knocked away. Connor Dewar flips the puck pass, and it looks like he's gonna
oh, Hobart scores. Hobart scores with the 12th shot of the game. Connor Durer made an incredible way to get that out of there after Anthony Stallers held the fort. And I know it's almost like Markstrom didn't expect that to come because, Connor Durer flips
it up. He beats the New Jersey Devil player back, and I believe the New Jersey Devil player back, was Dawson Mercer. Gets the puck out, and I think Holmberg just took a slap at it. Just took a slap at it. Let's have a look at this.
So Staller stood tall like he has all game. Stefan Nason runs him over. And look at this. Look at Connor Duer just working him for it. And and Holmberg's got a guy with a stick right in his guts, and he still puts it in.
I don't know what Markstrom was doing there, but positionally, like, the shot that the original shot that we had was completely like, he was not ready for that shot. I think he thought he thought his defenseman was gonna tie him up, and he'd have to play the puck. And we know Jake Markstrom in playing the puck. And if you're a goaltender, you know? But the Leafs have tied the game, guys.
It's 1 all. The shots are 3412. And, by the way, if you look at the shot counter, it's 1234. Hilarious. What a save by stars.
Jack, I think that was Jack Hughes just no. No. It wasn't Jack Hughes. That's I'm just talking. I'm talking out of my butt.
That's not Jack Hughes. That is Luke Hughes. Almost. Luke Hughes goes on a nice little run there right past Connor Timmons, turn styles him, but not Anthony Stallers, baby. Man, this goal is bonkers.
Let's watch Markstrom here on this replay. So Dewar creates the turnover, and I think just Markstrom's not I think he's just kinda standing watching. Stoller's had didn't even have his glove on. That's so crazy. What a crazy ass goal.
What a crazy ass shorthanded goal. Shots are 35 to 12, and we got a tie game, folks. Bonkers. Anything could happen in Jersey. Anything could happen in Jersey.
Man, this is crazy. Okay. I think we got a game here. The devils had 4 shots on that power play. The Leafs had 1, and the Leafs scored.
Wow. That was 1 of the most exciting goals of the year, and it was hey. Look at that depth scoring. That's Holmberg scoring a goal. God, he needed that, didn't he?
Man, he's just been snake bit just like Nick Robertson. Just completely all season long, and we're gonna get a defensive zone face off with the Leafs, offensive zone face to face off with the Devils. Wow. Man, Holmberg was just look at how excited he is. Damn, guys.
Damn. Steve? Hayden says, is it time to ask what's wrong with the doubles? Guys, remember the chat 2 minutes ago at the 11 minute mark? And I'm like, I don't understand why you guys are being so negative.
And then Matt Nyes gets his penalty, and you guys are like, see, Adam? But look at that. Look at that. And I said, hopefully, they get a 2 on 1 in that short handed goal situation. And what happened?
They got a 2 on 1 ish. I mean, Homburg was being trailed and and tied up, but give it to me. I said, what happens if they get a 211? What happened? What happened?
We got a goal. Yeah. William Tarpe. This is my first time joining the stream. I'm having so much fun, gripper nation.
William, welcome. It is a fun time. Like, these streams are wicked. And we have a really good, we have a really good vibe here. Gripper nation knows how to have a good time.
It's a weeknight. We can't stay up too late to party, so this is what we do. This is I'm just looking at, Gary Hall, very upset that there are not more likes on this video. You're right, Gary. Let's get some more likes, Gary.
Duerer to the first line. Exactly. You know what? That was a very William Nielander play and a very Mitch Marter play. The flick the puck up and turn on the jets and go.
And to be honest with you, I didn't know that Connor Duerer was that fast. He worked for that puck like I have never seen. That's just pure, I want this and I want it now. Awesome. I can't believe I can't believe this.
Gripenation, you guys rule. Puragon. Adam, do you prefer beer, wine, or cocktails? I'm a cocktail person, specifically a vodka soda guy. I love a beer, but I don't like to have too many because they make me feel sleepy and fat.
I don't know why. I just kinda feel like I'm, oh, I just had 6 beers and I feel like this. And wine I like, but it upsets my stomach, and it kinda makes me feel sleepy. So I it makes me my whole face, like, feels red and hot. So it's funny when I'm at my my wife's, my wife's family gatherings, they are my wife's family I wish I liked I wish I reacted better to wine because my wife's family loves wine.
Oh, we got a plate. And I'm always the 1 going, no.
I won't have wine. I'll have,
cheap vodka and some soda, please. Hayden said, what about seltzers? Seltzers are my jam. I love a seltzer. I love a seltzer.
I'm an old man. Love a seltzer. Canadian girl 83 gifted a membership. Thank you. Okay.
Max Domi in deep there. Oh, nice little turnover. Good forecheck by the Leafs. Here we go. Trying to create an opportunity.
And that well, that Philippe Myers shot took an entire stick with it, and it went out. 716 left in the 3rd period. Brandon Abbott, watching the game with my dad, but wanted to stop by and say hi, big sexy cheers. Thank you, Brandon. Thanks, big dog.
You're gonna be called big dog, right, if you're a guy? What's up, big dog? Big dog. What's up, big dog? It's that it's satisfying.
Right? Alright. Here we go. Minton. This is a big face off for oh, yeah.
That's a big face off for Minton getting the offensive zone face off. I think there's a little reward in there for Minton and for Holmberg because they've played well. If you can say that anybody's played well, I would say that that the 3rd 4th lines have looked among the best for the Leafs, which is usually not a good sign. Well, they only have 12 shots. So now here's what the Leafs need to do.
They need to score another 1. They need to go and score another 1. If Anthony Stallers is gonna be on 1, you need to go score him a goal. He deserves you scoring him a goal. Look at that blocker right out to Domi.
Just punched it up the ice. I love that. That's that Anthony Stallers is not like a a goalie that the Leafs have had for a long time. He doesn't just play Net. He owns Net.
He dominates the Net. You know what? You know, people in fashion, they're like, do you wear the outfit, or does the outfit wear you? Man, he he's the pads are lucky to be with him. Let's just put it that way.
Alright? Sam Weller 96. As a Wild fan, I can tell you the fan base loved Connor Dewar because he worked his ass off, never took a shift off. Great speed, heart, and soul guy. Hey, Sam.
Let me introduce you to another Minnesota Wild fan, and you guys are having a great year. That would be our producer, Hayden Mathison. Big Wild fan. So we got a couple wild fans in the chat. Not Marner with a shot.
Nice little setup by Matthews. Doesn't go anywhere, but we got some offensive zone pressure, and we like that. Here's Oliver Ekman Larson along the half board. Nigh is causing trouble out front. Puck squirts loose from Matthews, and, the devils are opening it up a little bit.
The ozone, possession numbers are relatively even between the devils and the Leafs in this, 3rd period, which is interesting. Sorry, in this game, which is interesting. The Leafs just are not getting any shots. And weirdly enough, you guys I'm gonna blow your mind here. When you wanna score goals, you need shots.
So it would be helpful to get 1. Maybe even 2, potentially 3. I I think the Leafs have, if I'm not mistaken, 6 or 7 shots in this period, which is a big improvement on the 1 they had in the first and, oh, that's a monster hit and I feel like, a clean 1. Yeah. Carter Carter dropped a good hit there.
It just didn't work out much for him. I think he he got hurt. Tavares. Oh, that would have been a good little it's a good little chip play by Max Pacheretti who I'll be honest, the Leafs have looked a lot better since he ran Jack Hughes over, and that is an icing call. Icing call.
433 left in the 3rd period. The shots are 35 New Jersey, 12 Toronto. The score is exactly, you guessed it, 1 all. It's hockey, man. Don't try to explain it.
Don't try to understand it. It's just the way it is. It's a black disk on ice, people wearing knife shoes. What can I tell you? Chaos.
Oh, nice little keep in there. Pontus Homburg. Very nice. Good stick. K.
Homburg back in. He's kept the puck in twice on both sides of the ice on this shift. Didn't know he was playing defense, but here we are. I think he is playing defense, actually. Is he playing defense?
No. What? Oh, Matthews. Shot. Oh, good save by Markstrom there.
Hey. 13th shot of the game. Matthew's got a clear look. We like that. We have less than 5 minutes left in this hockey game.
358. Now it's worth mentioning, and our stats god, Hayden Matheson brought this up, And I just wanna throw this at you. Okay? In the Matthews era, of all the Leafs Devils games that have gone to overtime I'm sorry. 25% of all Leafs Devils games have gone in overtime in the Matthews era.
They've met now 25 times, but the 24 times before this, 6 of them have gone overtime. So I feel in my heart and soul, like we're getting suspiciously close, and I hope the Leafs can change that. I I would prefer the Leafs just score and win. But 1 thing that I'm concerned about and legitimate is overtime against the Devils. Usually, I like overtime for the Leafs because their best players are really spectacular.
Overtime really is like NBA. Right? It's NBA, your top 3, 4 players are really the only thing that matters. If you don't have the best 3 players on the court, your chances of winning are they're less. A lot less.
It's a it's a superstar sport. Hockey is a real team game until there's only 3 guys on the ice. And then it becomes which which guys are the best guys on the team, who has it tonight, and, who's who's best guys are better? Is is New Jersey's best guys better? Are Toronto's best guys better?
And I would say tonight, unquestionably, New Jersey's better best guys have been better, and they skate like the wind. So that's gonna be a problem for the Leafs. So hopefully, just don't let them get there and steal the game and walk away and go, we stole it. We stole it. Terrible.
Right? You stole it, and you never wanna repeat that performance again, except if your name is Anthony Stohlrs, and you you just you just walk away. That's it. I don't wanna go to overtime against the doubles. I don't like it.
It feels like a cross ice pass between Luke and Jack Hughes, where Anthony Stoler is doing his absolute best and the Leafs just let him down. And I just don't want to go without that direction. Anthony Stoler deserves a win tonight. The Leafs have to go get it for him. This is where I need my forwards to dig in.
If I'm Craig Rubre, I'm yelling at them on the bench going, you cannot let Anthony Stoler not win this game. He needs this w. This he deserves this. Go show him how much you it means to you. Look.
He just made another great save. That's the 36th shot by the Devils. Again, the Devils are out shooting the Leafs 3 times. Anthony Stollars is on pace for, like, 40 to 42 shots tonight, not counting overtime. Guys, go get him a victory.
Get him a win. Give it to him. He deserves it. You don't. You haven't played well enough, but he has, so go reward him.
In his home state too, by the way, he's from he's from Jersey. I'd love to get it. Oh, here we go. Canev, great rebound clear. Let's see what he does.
That feels like icing. Oh, devil's touched it. That's not icing. Fabulous. K.
Leaf's not doing a whole heck of a lot, but the Matthews the Matthews, the Nyes, the Mariners, they're out there. Whenever Matthew Nyes and Austin Matthews play together, it's hard. I wanna call them the Matthews. That's an icing call. 302 left.
You got your first line out there taking an offensive zone face off. You don't hate that. You don't hate that. You like that. I think listen.
I think Matthews has played really well since he's come back. His point totals are there. I think a little bit they're showing some of the clips of the the chances he's had. I think a little bit of the timing is off, but that's gonna come with just playing games. When you don't play games, there's no way to replicate that in in practice.
So here's what the chat says. How's this gonna end? And this is Justin put this in the chat. Okay. Hear me out.
Leafs win 47%. Stop it. Devils had this 27%. I'm just here for the feet, 25% of you. You guys are sick.
200 votes. That's good that's good retention. Oh, here we go. Minton. Oh, nice little play in front.
If you coulda had a little bit more of a favorable rebound, that's a great play. Brat, Hamilton. Brat. Oh, man. Stahler's is just a monster tonight.
Domi, out to nobody in particular. Listen. The blender lines are hard mid game. So you got Minton, Domi, Homburg, who probably have 0 chemistry built in and need to learn each other's games, and that's hard. This is the NHL after all.
Oh, Benoit with the glove pass, but the Devils pick it up. Hala brings it back. Hala at your boy. 154 left in the 3rd period. The Devils are closing in on 40 shots.
The Leafs have 12. Game is 1 all. Tavares out. No. Doesn't quite get out.
Now it's out. Nylander's got it. Again, every leaf puck carrier, there are 2 devils on him at all times. And 1 of the devils, defenseman just tripped, but another devil comes in and guards. They are doing a great job smothering the Leafs.
They are. There's Benoit at the point, dumps it in. Tavares Deep, Nielander. I think this this line's probably gassed at this point. If we can just get a quick change, you're gonna get the Matthew Nye's, Austin Matthews, Mitch Marner line out there.
I believe that would have been icing, although it sure to look like Kova Savage touched that. Yeah. I think Kova so the fact that Kova Savage didn't handle it Baruvi is right to be mad here. Kova Savage lets this go. Yeah.
I I don't know. I think that they shouldn't have called that, but that was a playable puck. 112 in the third, Tavares line still out there. So because it's icing, you can't get the Matthews line out there, which really sucks. But Matthew Nye's is out there.
Matthew Nye's, Tanav, Marner is out there. We're just waiting for Austin Matthews. The the other of the Matthews is 107 left in this period. Tavares can't change until the Leafs clear the zone. It looks like Tavares is ready, and here we go.
We got the top lines out there for both teams. There's Dawson Mercer bringing the puck up. Riley up to Matthew Nies. Matthew Nies across the red line, dumps it in as the Leafs do. His man is Kovaasevich, and he's got Siegenthaler out there as well.
Matthews with a shot. Oh, passes does it pass? Did he pass to Nies? 30 seconds left in the game. We're go we we remember, we can get overtime, so maybe not necessarily the whole game, but regulation.
Icing was waved off there for some dumb reason. I don't understand that. It was icing. I don't understand that. Here comes William Nylander walking through the defense.
Okay. Here comes Tavares line back out there. Oh, don't you dare call a penalty on that. Oh, Ackman Larson with a nice little shot at the end of the game. It was tipped.
Guys, 25% of all Leafs Devils games in the Matthews area have gone to overtime. This will be the 7th in 25 matchups between these 2 teams. The 7th. And I won't lie to you. I was hoping the Leafs would score there because I really have to pee, and I don't think I'm gonna get a break to go pee.
But, you know, the great thing about overtime is it makes you feel like you're gonna pee your pants anyway. And if I do, I'm alone here at SDPN, and there are showers, so I could always jump into the shower. But, yeah. I do have to go to the bathroom. I'm not gonna lie to you there.
This is the Prophet, Ammerang or Aj Agmerang? Adam I'm sorry. I can't pronounce. Prophet says, hey. This is the first OT for Adam streams this year.
Yes. It is. Yes. It is. Let's get an OT, baby.
852 people in the in the chat. I love that. Thank you for joining us, by the way. If this is your first gripper nation stream, welcome. I'm wearing this is my agent provocateur mug.
Noted Alan Walsh client, Max Pacheretti, absolutely ran over Jack Hughes. If those Rock them Sock them videos with, Don Cherry were still a thing, you know that would be at the top of the hits compilation. Entire Pizza says, Adam is not at his house. I always thought this was from his house. No.
I'm not. Would I have would I be be between 2 crotches if I was at my house? I don't think I'd have any crotches painted on the wall at the house. That is, by the way, me or that's Jesse. That's me, by the way.
Just throwing that out there. Ranted in with the hat trick, 62, abs win. Adam wants to know or, sorry, Riley says, what kind of socks are you wearing? I'm wearing blue Lululemon ankle socks because I came from the gym. William Tarpy.
Hope exams went well. There are people in this chat who are studying for exams right now. So everybody who is studying for exams and taking a break to watch overtime, we appreciate you being with us, and we love you. By the way, Ranson and getting a hat trick is beautiful for my fantasy team. Anthony Stallers playing the way he's played, beautiful for my fantasy team, and this is what I'm worried about.
Big save from Stallers, but I told you, Jack Hughes, you watch that guy in overtime. We're gonna have a 2 on 1. Marner, Matthews. Shoot Matthews. Did he shoot wide?
No way. No way did he put that wide. Oh, man. That was a monster opportunity. K.
Matthews is gonna change, but they're gonna have to go quickly. Is out. He's all over Brett Pesci. And, okay. Shout out.
There's Hughes staying out there at number 86. Watch out for him. Please get on him, please. Do not let him have that puck. Make him change.
Okay. So they throw the puck back. So the devils play a little bit of a power play the same way the Leafs kinda did last year where they just keep throwing the puck back, and resetting, and, that is a key thing. Okay. Oliver Ackman Larson on the point duty here.
We've got Domi and Neland are out there. I like the speed. I like the playmaking. I would like for the Leafs to get possession. This is the problem for the Leafs in overtime.
Possession is always an issue for these Leafs in the in oh my god. What? That's the worst change I've ever seen in my life. Oh my god. And they missed.
Boy, the Leafs just got bailed out there, but bag skated the hell out of those guys, whoever. It was Nylander and, I think, Oliver Ackman Larson that made a terrible change there. Absolute garbage. Guys, it's the NHL. Come on now.
This is the Devils. You can't do that. Oh, no. We got an old potential wraparound opportunity there. The Devils have dominated this overtime, just the way they've dominated play at 5 on 5 throughout the entire game.
The Leafs just cannot get their sticks on this puck. They can't seem to take it from the Devils. They're looking honestly, they're looking slow tonight, and Stallard's just got run there. I don't think the guys on the ice knew that. Here they come.
Toronto Maple Leafs, Tavares with a spin move. Can't move the puck fast enough, though. Doug Hamilton regroups. The Leafs are gonna change. I think that's gonna bring Marner and Matthews back on the ice.
Yep. I am right on that. Tanev is out there as well. Here comes Jack Hughes. This is what you don't want if you're the Toronto Maple Leafs with 235 left in overtime.
Jack Hughes going on a break on a 211. Avoid that. He's out there with Andre Palat, and I can't see the number of the other devil, but I think it's Siegenthaler. He's tall. He's Siegenthaler.
Here comes Jack Hughes. You don't want this. Stop this. Oh, what a save by Anthony Stolas, and we got a potential breakaway. Austin Matthews with a break.
Come on. Put it on
the net, Austin. He scores. He scores. Austin Matthews scores on the Leafs 14th shot of the game. Austin Matthews is the overtime hero.
The Toronto Maple Leafs win a game where they were out shot, outplayed, and somehow Anthony Solar stopped them from being out scored. Austin Matthews had 4 or 5 great opportunities the entire game, 1 on 1 against Jake Markstrom, and the final 1, he buries. And by the way, absolutely outraces, the defense
I think that was Luke Hughes. Unbelievable no. It wasn't. It was Brett Pesci. Just an unbelievable goal.
Man, you gotta feel that.
Do you feel that? The captain is back, baby. That was unfreaking real. And, by
the way, what was I saying to you in the 3rd period?
I was telling you in the 3rd period that the Leafs needed to
win this game for Anthony Stahlers. I was telling you that needed to happen because Anthony Stahlers deserved this win, and guess who goes and gets it for him? The mother effing captain. Unfreaking real electric scenes at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. Anything can happen in Jersey.
Right, Ken Danico? Let's go. People dropping subs in the chat. Love you all. Canadian girl 83, squeezable lemon, Mike McDonald, Justin Fisher.
Baby, there's subs to go around. That's a big, big win in overtime for the Toronto Maple Leafs. That is big, baby. Wow. Wow.
And, by the way, they're showing that that Max Patcherretti, Max Patcherretti, hit on Jack Hughes. Baby. Wow. Wow. Crappy game.
Great finish. Unbelievable finish. Unbelievable finish. Prophet says deserve to win 0 m. Can't believe it.
No. Brycecepticon dropping 5 gifted subs. Thank you, Brycecepticon. You know what? Maybe the Leafs don't need to shoot.
Maybe they don't need to shoot as much. Maybe put less effort in. Anthony Stoller's guys. We were asked a little bit earlier about Anthony Stoller's and Vesna conversations. Games like this that make the news, we're out of town reporters who vote on this.
Who votes on the on the Vezna? Who votes who votes on the Vez? Vesna Trophy, is awarded NHL general managers vote on it. K? And I'll tell you something about NHL GMs.
They don't watch a lot of not their team. They watch a lot of their own team. They don't watch a lot of not their team. Anthony Stoller is doing what he did tonight is gonna be news around the NHL tonight. People are gonna be sharing text messages about how bad the Leafs were and how great Anthony Stoller was.
That's the kind of game that gets you into the Vezna conversation. I'm not saying it wins you 1, but these are the games that people remember. It's a reputational award. Right? Reputational award.
Absolutely, he's the best goalie they've had and I I think already we're talking I I listen. I'm I'm willing to say it right now. I think he's the best goalie they've had since at least Ed Belfort. And that and and I love Freddie Anderson, and he was great, but, dude, wow. Like, this guy's this guy's a different level.
Cujo, little heavy Cujo and Podman, I think, are still on a a next level thing. You gotta be here a few seasons to do that, but, dude, SLS says, Adam, what do you fix next game for the Leafs? Everything, man. Bring the energy. The 1 thing I will say is everything turned on Max Pacheretti.
You know, he didn't score tonight, and he's just come back from injury, but Max Pacheretti, dropping that hit on, Jack Hughes. Like like, that was that started the energy. And then this so TSN is running the replay right now of the Connor Dewar play for the Paunas Holmberg goal. And Markstrom was just not ready for a shot there. I don't know why, but it was 1 of those where you're like and and and Durer was brought down, probably should have been a penalty.
Homburg probably coulda had a penalty called against him on that play. Doesn't matter. They score. And Matthews getting that goal in overtime, if you only watch the highlights, you'd be like, oh, well, the Leafs played pretty well. That overtime was all New Jersey.
It was all devils. It was Jack Hughes to Dawson Mercer to whoever else on the devil. Jesper brought, Andre Polat scored tonight. It was unbelievably tilted in the devil's favor. And, by the way, Staller's save percentage in this game was a 974.
974. That's crazy. I I I just I have to I wanna highlight how not in charge the Leafs were in overtime. So for Matthews to get that goal, that is a that is something that the Leafs 2 or 3 years ago, I don't think would have got. The Leafs 2 or 3 years ago, I don't think they had the goal tending to do what happened tonight, for 1.
No disrespect to Jack Campbell. He had some great times here. No disrespect to Freddie Anderson, award Ilias Samsonov or Puderameraszek. But I look at I look at the mentality that goes into winning a game like this. Okay?
Remember what I said to you with about 13 minutes to go? I was like, hey. You know, chat, you're getting a little negative here. Remember I said that? And then they scored a few minutes later.
The the whole thing about being a hockey player is you gotta put the bad shit behind you. So if you have a bad cup first couple of periods, you forget it. You move on. It's for the reporters and the podcasters and the the yappers to talk about the next day. Well, they won, but they had a bad first and second.
Doesn't matter. If you're playing in the game tonight, you need to be like, okay. Rearview mirror, don't care. It's about winning the game. And they did it.
And they did it for, and it didn't matter that New Jersey had dominated possession in overtime. Didn't matter. It didn't matter, man. Didn't matter at all. It was, let's take advantage of the opportunity.
And what what's so different about the mentality of the Leafs a few years ago versus now is that these guys are older, and they know what being out of it feels like, and they know what stealing a game feels like, and they know what oh, you know what? Yeah. We probably could win this game. And and before, it'd be like, well, we're having a bad night. We probably won't score.
Dude, crazy. By the way, if you bet over under on the 15 shots, the under won. The under won. I think that was either 3rd shot 13 or 14 that went in. Just crazy.
Just crazy. J w 33 in the chat says, f in the chat for marks from save percentage, plus an l. Yeah. Can you imagine after a game like that, you get near 40 shots? That kind of felt like the Leafs on Montembo, in game 1.
Remember? They they put, like, 41 shots on them, and, none of them went in. Danny Dombrowski, who will be screaming louder into their pillow tonight? Steve Dangle or Sheldon Keefe? Man, so that's Sheldon's second loss against the Leafs this year.
And the Leafs are 13, 2, and 1 against the devils. If I'm if my stats god Hayden is to be believed here. Yeah. The Leafs are 13, 2, and 1 against the devils in their last 16 games. And in those games, the Leafs have averaged over 4 and a half goals.
Not tonight. Not tonight. Not tonight. It's all it's their 5th straight road win against the devils. 5th straight.
That's flipping nuts. And under 15 skr13. Under 15 shot win is beyond wild against a really good team, complete insanity. So by the way, the Leafs got 48 shots on Montebo in that game. And that was the first game of the year.
Yucky. Jackie m. Good night, Gripper Nation. Thank you, Adam and STP, for another great stream. Till next week, grippers.
And, Hayden, what what game are we doing next week? Do you know? Do you have this do you have this schedule in front of you? He's gonna check. Because we are I will be back, and Steve is gonna be on, I believe, this Saturday for the stream.
So we're gonna do next week, we're gonna do the Dallas game. So, if you enjoyed the stream tonight and you wanna come back, we would love that. Next week versus Dallas, the Robertson brothers going head to head. We'll see if Nick's in the lineup. But, the Robertson brothers going head to head next week is gonna be you, me, the Leafs, and the Dallas Stars, gripper nation.
Austin Bayless says Keith slash winning d t w o m, but losing the game. Name a more iconic duo. I'm I'm I'm assuming dtwm means something about outshooting. Oh, deserve to win a meter. Leafs Keith winning the deserve to win a meter, but losing the game.
Name a more iconic duo. I can't, actually. That's a really, really good point. By the way, if I missed shouting out anybody that gave a bunch of subs, absolutely love that. Absolutely love that.
I appreciate, all the subs that were given tonight, and, I appreciate you for being here. The fact that we got up to, like, a 1000 people is just crazy, and, that's awesome. Robert Bette with the nice hit and Jersey not doing anything, it's the same as the Leafs last year with the Keith with Keith. Yeah. So nice hitting Kova Sewich from behind, and it was, and it was a boarding call and they called it.
The devils didn't do anything. When Patchett already ran over Jack Hughes, the devils didn't do anything. You can't like, okay. Let's have a look at just the devils just for a second here. And, again, we're picking at, we're picking at this because the devils are a good team.
And had they won tonight, they would be ahead of the Capitals in the standings. Although by points percentage, the caps are way ahead of them. So this is crazy. If you wanna play the Carolina hurricanes or the New York Rangers or the Washington Capitals in the playoffs, you're going to play some of them, 1 of them at least. You're gonna have to fight for your space, especially the way the Capitals played the Leafs last week.
It was like every inch they fought them on every inch, and the Capitals are big and they're tough. They're not you know, Tom Wilson's not running around taking people's heads off anymore. He's smart about it. I think you gotta if you're the lead or sorry. If you're the devils, you gotta figure out a way to find some team toughness.
And if I'm Jack Hughes and I got run over like that and your best response is Dougie Hamilton going, hey, Max Patch Reddy. You stop that. I have a huge problem with that. You can do that. Bro g g, bro g g j o.
Welcome to STP VIP. Hey. Thank you so much for joining. We appreciate you being a sub. Guys, absolutely love hanging out with you as always.
We're gonna wrap it up tonight. I wanna say a big shout out to, Justin Fisher, to Robert Molloy, and to Hayden Matheson, the crew behind the scenes here at SDPN chatting with you all night. Steve will be back with a stream on Saturday night when the Leafs take on the red wings. The Ducks and Leafs is the next game on Thursday this week. Trouba's coming to town.
So enjoy. Love you. Brand new SDP is out today. Brand new SDP will be out tomorrow as well, and then we'll have a brand new CJ show on Thursday. And, of course, check out agent provocateur out this week.
He talks all about Jacob Trouba and those, you know, the trade stuff. So, anyway, love you all. Gonna wrap it up. Thank you so much for joining me. I love you.
Take care.
