Hello, and welcome. Yes. Yes. Everyone who has tuned in, you are indeed stuck with me. No Steve Dangle tonight.

He is in Ottawa at a book signing, but you get me in his place. And what a night we get to enjoy Leafs hockey where Nick Robertson is being healthy scratch because of his terrible game yesterday. Shout out to everybody who's in the chat early. Always love you guys in the chat early. Yeah.

Nick Robertson, according to all of the Leafs reporters down there. I'm reading from David Alter. Pacheretti, Matthews, Marner, top line, Nies, Tavares, Nylander, Holmberg, Minton, Alex Nylander, Lawrence Dewar, Reeves. So that's the forward group, and Alex Nylander comes in to replace Nick Robertson. That's the story going into this game, for me because, like, last night was the final straw for Nick Robertson just getting a break.

He he was he was turning his game around when he scored that goal, that that great that great goal. He scored the like, what? Like, 2 games ago. It was like, okay. Finally, something went in.

And then we see his game last night where he is re he's on the ice for 1 of the goals, then he's offside on a play where he mixed the pass to the player at the blue line. So, like, you you should know how to be onside. And then out of that draw where he caused the offsides, he takes a bad penalty, and he goes to the box. He was he was swimming upstream, that entire game against the caps last night, and Broobie is like, okay. Not only are you not scoring the 2 goals he scored all season long, now you're also not hustling the right way.

That's what kept him in the lineup was playing hockey the right way despite not getting results. And now he's not doing anything right, and he's not getting results. Let's see what Alex Nylander can do. So Nylander's in the lineup. Rubenkyn is also out of the lineup, because Reeves is on that 4th line with Lawrence and Deuer.

Olmberg on the wing. Alright. And then, Pacheretti slides in there. So Pacheretti, I guess, takes the Grubankin spot, and then he moves up to the first line, which I think is very interesting. You remove Nyes from the first line because Pacheretti's there, because you wanna see Pacheretti at the first line there.

And then you keep Matthews and Marner together as they were together last game. So a lot of interestingly storylines to go, for this game. And the Penguins Penguins stink right now, so we'll see if the Penguins are good. Adam Wilde couldn't do this game because he refuses to sit there and talk about Kyle Dubas at all and the the team that Kyle Dubas manages. So that's why Adam Wilde is not filling in.

Wes Richards says, Jesse, you beautiful man, when the Leafs are fully healthy and barring no trades, what would be your ideal lineup? My ideal lineup is very similar to the lineup they have tonight, but I am of the proponent that you keep Matthews and Marner away from each other. I don't think that the ideal lineup has Matthew Matthews and Marner together on that top line. I think it's Nies, Matthews, Nylander, Pacheretti, Tavares, Marner. That's your top 6.

And then the mid the bottom 2 lines, I think Minton should make this team. He's been playing so well. I'd love to see I'd love to see Minton stick around and play that 3rd c position. So, ideally, he's 3 c, and then Holmberg on the left wing, new acquired right winger for the 3rd line. That's my trade deadline hope.

And then you get Lorenz, Dewar, and I don't know if Reeves makes the playoff lineup, but it might be good to have Reeves there or newly acquired 4th line, 4th line winger. Defense defense tonight is Riley Myers, Oel Tanev, Benoit, Timmins, and Joseph Wolff starting. Matt Best is in the chat. Shout out Matt Matt Best right now. Matt Best, absolute chef. Says he'll eat a ghost pepper if Reeves scores tonight. We are holding you to that. So shout out Matt. The deep airing tonight for the Leafs is Riley Myers, Oel Tanev, Benoit Timmons.

That's cool. But ideally in the playoffs, it's some combination of Riley, OEL, Tanev, Hawkenpaugh, McCabe, and Benoit or Timmons. I don't know how those split up, but, yeah, ideally, Myers isn't in there. It's Haakonpah. And McCabe, who's just placed on IR retroactive to, I think, like, late November.

So they they're doing some roster management with that stuff as everybody gets healthy and back into the lineup. They need to put more guys on injured reserve to get give the healthy guys some alright. We are getting closer to the game starting here. The anthems are done. We absolutely love to see the anthems finishing.

Hope it will resolve itself. Robert, I am on the same boat as you. I am on the exact same bandwagon as you. I don't think Matthews and Marner should play together. I think this team is better when they are able to run their own lines.

Penn's really, got in front of the net there and and blocked his view. They may anybody else watching on Sportsnet see that the shot counter isn't working? Oh, there. Okay. Just updated.

For the first part of the game, the shot counter wasn't working. Shots are now 4 to 2 for Pittsburgh. Canadian girl 83 says not great unless you are Cassie. Yeah. Cassie, the Pens fan.

Depends on how the playoff goes, but I assume it's gonna be the Toronto Maple Leafs because this is what they do every single time. But somebody's gonna pay them a whole bunch of money to to to have those goals for them next season.

Because, after that whole Jacob Trouba mess of a day where they trade Trouba and give Shesterkin that big deal, the rangers went out, and they beat the Penguins 42. And the Penguins are in the same situation as the Leafs where it's back to back with travel because that game was in New York, and now we're back in Pittsburgh.

So the excuse for, like, either of these teams being a tired team, they're in the same boat. New York is closer to Pittsburgh than Toronto, but same difference here. Not too much. We also got another chat here from wonder Davey for $5. Would Steve do what would Steve do if he had access to the soundboard during streams?

Yeah. There is a reason we don't give it to him. He could not control himself. It would be a mess of a livestream. I also don't he's not the most tech savvy, so he doesn't, like, run his own streams.

Robert Betts says, what do you think Phillippe Myers what do you think of Phillippe Myers? I think he's playing really good. I think he has a good career ahead of him. Yeah. I, I love Philly Myers.

I think he's he's been doing really well in his limited role with the Leafs in the games that he's gotten into. It's just like the Leafs are so deep right now on Dee that if they're all healthy, he doesn't make the lineup. But there's never a case where all the Leafs are healthy. You know? It just it just doesn't work out that way where all of the Leafs d are healthy, and that's why you have extra bodies like Phillippe Myers who can fill in at a moment's notice and play solid d.

He's playing on the top pair right now with Morgan Rielly. Like, that's your 7th defenseman who can slot in on the 1st pair. That's hella useful. So big fan of Myers and what he brings to the table. Not gonna give you anything really offensively, but solid defense, and that's what you want out of, defenseman.

Scott Morton says, would Julian not let Steve use his house and set up for tonight? He could. He could. It just would have been a lot from him going from the live show to then us trying to rig it up at Julian's. And Julian's also gotta work.

Right? Like, he's got the Sens game to cover tonight. So it's not just like, hey. Julian's there to help and all that stuff. And and yeah.

It's easier if we just have that's why there's 3 of us. That's why there's myself and Adam. We can step in when 1 of us needs the time off and to go do their book signings. You know? That's what we're here for.

But Holmberg keeps the puck in the zone, and the Leafs are now setting up their offense with the Homburg, Minton line, their Nylander line. There's Alex in the corner looking like Willie using those great edges. Both of them fantastic scares. Here's a break. Minton fires it high.

Can't beat Jari. Great little play there for Fraser Minton, who's looked spectacular. Another chance off a leg in front into the corner. Great pressure here by the 3rd line. I love this line.

It's not too bad of a drive, just down the 401 back to our home. So no need to stay and spend the extra money on Airbnbs in Kingston. Great lows chances there for the Leafs from that Tavares line. We got the Matthews, Marner, Pacheretti line back out there. If you missed it, Pacheretti is back in the lineup.

Alex Nylander is back in the lineup. Nick Robertson, scratched. Grabenkin is scratched. That's what the lineup's looking like tonight. Everybody stay higher hydrated.

Hilarity is ensuing on the ice as Reese has his arms in the air, and he's diving to try and block that shot. Now a little pressure from the Penguins here after the Leafs had that pressure.

4th line's breaking out for the Leafs. Jewer's looking for Lawrence. He gets them. Reeves, backhanded, 1 handed shot. I think it hit Jari and bounced over the corner.

Hey. Here's a chance. Benoit, 1 on 1 with the goalie. Can't beat him. Oh my goodness.

Simone Benoit, all alone. Can't do anything. Oh my goodness. Unfortunately, Benoit is not Austin Matthews, does not have the snipe show that a much a much more adept player might have, but Jari with a nice save. Cassie says the Penguins do don't know how to play defense actually.

Facts. Big facts from Cassie. The penguin's not great at defense. So we had Reeves with the 1 handed backhand shot to try and beat Tristan Jari. Jari gets a little bit of a piece of it, hits the post.

Then we get Benoit all by himself. Just takes it. I I would have loved to see a bit of dangles there. You know, your forehand, backhand, you take your time with that. You were 1 on 1 all alone, but Jari does a smart thing.

Comes out, cuts off the angles, makes the save off the kinda side of the net post area. They cover up the puck. 620. 620 left in the 1st period. We have a tie ball game, ladies and gentlemen.

What a for a franchise that had so much success, I guess this is what comes with the territory. You know, when you have so much success, you then have you have the downturn of of of your era as a franchise.

You know? But it's tough to see. It's tough to watch this organization struggle because they still have all a lot of the major pieces, Malkin, Letay, and Crosby from those championship airs. That was a great shot there by JT. What a snipe he tried to have, A snipe that got caught by Jari, like, right into his glove, but, like, lot of velocity on that wrist shot.

Watching the replay here. Oof. Wrist shot's a thing of the past. Everybody loves everybody loves snapshots these days. There's, like, a a slight difference between if you're taking a wrist shot and a slap shot and how much you bring the puck back, like, in the blade of the stick and and with your wrist.

But the wrist shot is, like, slowly fading because everybody can take these really quick snapshots and and get them past the goalie. And same with the the slapshot is something we never see unless it's from the point, from a defenseman. Here's a chance for the Penguins. That shot goes wide, and then we get a rebound off the boards. Is that Sydney Crosby?

No. It's not Sydney Crosby. Sydney Crosby with his hands in the air. He's on the ice. Penguins goal off the boards.

Shot missed. Oh, was it Crosby or Russ? Who's who's getting credit for let me see if it's on the oh, Brian Russ gets the credit for it. There you go. They kept showing Crosby on the on the screen.

Crosby is the 1 who took the initial shot. So Crosby takes the initial shot right off the boards. Brian Rust right behind him to collect that puck and score. That is a Penguins goal, which means we are sad. Boo.

Boo indeed. Imaginary crowd. Sloppy game tonight says j_max. I agree with that. I agree with that.

What a chance there for Willie. He usually he's usually really good on breakaways. He missed 1 last night too in the Caps game where he just, backhand wide. It didn't even hit the net. And then there, he tries to go 5 hole, and Jari easily snuffs that 1 out.

I wish Matthew Nye's was up at the first line from the start. Matthews and Marner were great the other night when they were apart, and then Craig Grover threw them in together against Nashville. They scored all of the goals against Nashville, and then they won the game. That caught Nashville off by surprise because Matthews and Marner weren't supposed to play together that game. They weren't played together on the first line, and then they got put together.

I think when you start with them together, you lose that element of surprise for sure, but they get into their little groove, and they're not as dynamic. It's better to keep Matthews and Marner apart and then deploy them together as your little secret weapon. That's what I wanna see with Matthews and Marner is they get together when you absolutely need a goal, and it's on them to go score that goal. I think, ideally, it's Nies, Matthew, Nylander. We have already been this.

Nies, Matthews, Nylander. And then on the second line, it's Patches, Tavares, Marner. That is what I want. That is what I want them to go back to. If anybody wants to see the Zambonis oh, Robert dropped, this link in there.

This week also very good but there is a clear theme hockey is a team sport. We all know that but these are solo efforts and they're fantastic.

Why don't we start with Cole Brown of the Brantford Bulldogs? He's having a great season so far.

Back into actions. Bulldogs control the puck. Brown makes a move to the net, gets around, and scores. Power move by Cole Brown. Opens the scoring at Oshawa.

Oh, wow. Apparently, his season got a little better. In 2023, Cole Brown was a 6th round draft pick of the New Jersey devils' 164th overall. His career high in goals is 17, his career high in points is 42, and he's on track to blow those totals out of the water. With 12 goals and 21 points in just 26 games so far this season, this kid is 6 foot 3 doing this.

I don't know. I'm just not terribly sure how you're supposed to stop that. And I love the internal competition here because his teammate Nick Lardis was on oh wow last week. Again, you can check that video out on this YouTube channel. Cole Brown absolutely slicing and dicing his way through the Oshawa generals.

And then the little bowling ball celebration at the end for good measure, Cole Brown. Oh wow. For our next highlight, not everything is a solo effort. After all, it's a team sport and sometimes you need a little helping hand. Sometimes you need a little absolute laser beam up the ice down the middle for a breakaway And that leads to a goal and a lesson.

I learned something I didn't know before because I always thought the world's largest nickel was in Sudbury, Ontario. It turns out it plays in London. Here's William Nickel.

I know the kamesh played a little football on his day too. So, oh, I don't know about that. Buck is gonna be playing here by the London Knights through the middle. Nice pass. Here's Nickel coming in back.

He scores. William Nickel sliding it through, and it's 1 nothing London Knights. What a play. Nicholl picking up his 9th goal of the season opening up the scoring.

Oh wow. How about 2024 for William Nicol? First he helps the London knights win yet another ohl championship. Not long after that he gets drafted into the NHL by the Edmonton Oilers 7th round a 194th overall. And forget pace he's already blown his own Ontario Hockey League personal bests out of the water.

Last year in 65 games, the forward had 6 goals. He's already got 10. Last year, he had 14 assists. Now he's got 17. Last year, he had 20 points.

Now he's got 27. In 27 games. That currently has him 4th on the London knights in scoring but the guys ahead of him are ridiculous. Sam Dickinson, 1st round pick to the San Jose Sharks. Denver Barkey, 3rd round pick to the Philadelphia Flyers.

Easton Cowan, 1st round pick to the Toronto Maple Leafs. That's it. It was a really nice pass to to start this off but sometimes when you get an opportunity, a golden opportunity, doesn't mean you're not gonna choke. Finishing off what started matters and this tuck 5 hole. Oh wow.

For a next highlight, the Peterborough Petes were on the receiving end of that last goal. I don't think they liked that very much. How about we go to a different Peterborough Petes game? This time with them taking on the Niagara ice dogs and oh, wow. Gavin Bryant goes end to end not just against any team but his former team.

I can sit ahead here and his he played by Gavin Bryant. The puck was bouncing on him a little bit. He gets it to settle. Here he goes over the blue, going wide, heading to the goal. He shoots up, rebound scores.

Gavin Bryant, the former ice dog on the power play, closes the gap. It's a 3 2 hockey game.

Oh, yeah. No. That's pretty good. Gavin Bryant, the Ingersoll, Ontario native like forget a lead pass, you know forget a tic tac toe a 2 on 1 whatever. How about I just carve through everyone on the other team like a thanksgiving turkey?

That requires so much adapting on the fly not to mention he was stopped on the initial shot and then stuck with it and got the rebound. Gavin Bryant, are you kidding me, dude? Oh, wow. And for a final highlight, Niagara, I'm so sorry but we're not finished with you. The Flint firebirds take flight, specifically Jeremy Martin.

Off in on the forecheck. Mania with the pass, driving all the way through and scoring a beautiful goal. Jeremy Martin has his 4th of the season and 3rd in 5 games. Flint leads 1 nothing. Woah.

Wow. That's that's not even just cutting through your opponents like butter late like finessing and everything. That that power cutting around and driving the net. So here I was thinking I like Jeremy Martin because he's from my current hometown of ajax. No, I think I like him for this stuff too.

Guys I think Jeremy Martin likes to hang on to the puck because right now Jeremy is just 17 years old but he already has a full season in the OHL under his belt. He was with Flint last year. He played 64 games with Flint and put up 13 goals as a 16 year old. That's pretty good. But this made me laugh.

In those 64 games, 1 assist. This year, forget it. All bets are off. He's already up to 3. And dude, I'm not even poking fun at the guy because if you can do that, if you can do what you just saw, why would you ever pass it?

Somewhere in there, 25th or 27th, I'm pretty sure, you're gonna find out if Steve has to pay for the crimes he committed in hot take a palooza 2, where he said that he would eat a ghost pepper if a goalie ever signed for over $10,000,000. And what did we have? We had Igor Shesterkin yesterday well, today, actually, technically, the contract was finalized. Igor Shesterkin is being paid $11,500,000. So Steve might have to pay for his crimes.

We will see how that goes. I don't actually don't want him to eat a ghost pepper, but, like, he might not have a choice. We'll see. We'll see. The Zambonis are still on the ice.

It's why it's why Buffalo was so upset that they lost the McGuykle draft and they lost the Austin Matthews draft. It's like they stung for so long, and we're like, we're supposed to get 1 of these cars, and we got stuck with fucking Jack Eichel.

It's you brought in a bunch of guys who might be able to do some stuff. There's now that you see them on the ice, there's obviously a giant lack of scoring and that you have some guys who are, like, on the power play units that shouldn't be on any power play units in the entire NHL.

It'll be on the team.

But the sum of the parts where you said we're not just gonna have a bunch of children out there and AHLers. We're gonna bring in real NHLs and spend some money this off season should have resulted in something better here than just an anemic team who is a pathetic on ice, NHL team who shouldn't be out there. And so it's it's on both. It's on it's on both the head coach for not getting the most out of these guys when your GM did give you something to play with. And it's also on the GM for bad talent evaluation and bringing in these vets that I thought, hey.

If if Calvins is is actually going for something here, there might be something there, but it's all the wrong personnel top to bottom.

The new guys are underachieving. The old guys, which Bedard falls under hilariously, are also under a treat achieving. No one's doing well. Like, are they getting unusable goal tending? They're probably not From Merazek?

You you can't do it as a star too, but as a role player, it especially hurts because you're out there just to, hopefully, be a little bit of energy, be a little bit of offense while the Stars get some rest late in this game so they can get out there and score the goal.
