Transcript of Pat Bev Explains His Decision To Return To Israel After Iran's Missile Attack On Tel Aviv

The pap f pod with Roan. Right now, we are about to embark on something that has probably never been done outside of CNN and Fox News and NBC and ABC. We have boots on the ground in an active war zone as we're doing an NBA podcast, so. Or a basketball podcast. So as we gear up to talk about basketball simultaneously, we will be doing ourselves a disservice if we didn't talk about exactly what's going on in the world. And interestingly enough, we have a correspondent who, instead of running away from all the firefighting and the bombs, is running towards it. And that is my co host, Mister Pape. So tell us where you are, and let's start it where our feet are at, and then we'll take it back a couple days and we'll tell the store the entire story.

Okay. So, first off, is it fair to say that I don't want to tell my exact location? Is that fair to say? Can I start off with that?

Now, but I am in. I just landed in Tel Aviv. Real quiet. Obviously wasn't quiet yesterday. The decision to go back. Right. We had some imports who stayed, you know, we had imports who stayed and some imports who decided to come back. I'm one of the guys who decided to come back. I spoke with some of my israeli teammates, captains of the team, and from their perspective, that, pat, we wouldn't go back if it wasn't safe. We were just flower, whole family to us, you know? So, you know, they. They told me that it was safe to come back and. And I'm here now.

My understanding of the situation is that you guys, as a team went on the road to Bulgaria this past weekend because there were threats of potential military unrest. Is that accurate?

Where you guys came back from and where you went to, say less.

So because of the history of war, a lot of teams don't want to play in Israel, so understandable, right? So we have to go to a mutual station and play. And a mutual station for us is Bulgaria. Summer cough Bulgaria. So basically, a summer call is like, basically our home arena for Euro cup games.

So. So every time we play home, our home is summer cove. So we have to fly to Sofia, boom land in Sofia, take two hour bus, drive up the summer cove, which is like, it gives you snowmass, vibes. Not much aspen, but gives you snowmass, vibes. Little slopes and ski mounds. I stayed in a fucking cabin. Like, I had pictures of it. I'll send it to you guys. So, yeah, so our home is for Euro cup is summer Cove, Bulgaria. So that's why we traveled to Bulgaria to play. To play this Europe cup game.

First thing I hear is I get a text from Dave, are you okay? Hell, yeah, I'm okay. Then I get a text from Miss Lisa. Shout out to Barstool. Straight up shout out to Barstool. The first two people that reached out is two people from Barstool, Dave and Miss Lisa. So shout out to barstool. Off top. And then I should have started getting a whole bunch of shit.

A whole bunch of shit. So I'm like, oh, what the fuck happening, ax homie back home. Hey, man, what you saying? What you saying over there? Are you okay? You know what I'm saying? Like, we get to halftime now. My phone is 50 messages. So I had a ton of people reach out, but my whole thing was like, my israeli teammates.

Like, y'all cool. Like, you feel me? You gotta think, like, they see teammates leaving with, you know, their girls and their ladies and. And basically, like, they leaving they family behind. You know what I'm saying? So, like, you know, you see a teammate, you know, his girl, his two children, you see another teammate, his girl, you see another teammate, his girl, you know, and they. And they basically like, pat, like, yeah, like, hell, yeah, we going back. Like, we got guitar families. I didn't have anybody with me, so I'm like, yeah, I'm going back. I asked my really teammates, like, yo, I'm safe. They're like, pat, we wouldn't go back if it was safe. We'll just fly our family out. I hit my guy, amri caspy. You know who I play with? Houston rockets. And who's real big in Israel. Yo, I'm safe. I can come back. Cause, like, you gotta think I'm doing two, 3 hours bus rides. I'm doing all that. Like, I need to get home on my bed. I need to relax. I need to do that. Like, am I safe? Everyone pointed to the, you know, you're safe, you're safe, you're safe.

Nothing's gonna happen. Nothing's gonna happen. So that's what made my decision be like, okay, cool, I'm gonna go back. I talked to my mom. She's like, why are you going back? I'm like, cause I wanna go back. I don't wanna be in a fucking hotel. I've been on the road for a week. I wanna go my ass back home. Feel me? But at the same time, you have to understand, Ron, like, I'm from Chicago, right? And I say that to say this when I sign here, obviously, I got a ton of, like, awful shit said to me via Twitter. I still got people like, yo, y'all come back. Papev on his way back to Tel Aviv. Y'all make another round. I got literally people telling, you know, y'all make another round. Pat bev there sim some more missiles. Like, I got nasty shit being said on Twitter, which is, you know, it ain't cool, but it's twitter, so it's what it is. You know what I'm saying? But when it comes to, like, hostile environments, you know, and I'm not saying this is the right thing, but I've been accustomed to the norm of burying younger kids and I burying people that raised me.

And, you know, at a time, Chicago was the leading nation's worlds. You know, they had more deaths than Iraq. They led the world in deaths, you know, so when it came to, like, a safety issue, I'm so used to, like, the Chicago militant vibe and the, you know, and it should not be like this. Like, it's crazy. I played for the bulls and I didn't get any text messages about, oh, man, you know, people are dying and stuff like that. I'm like, and I just had to bury a homie. I just had to pay for a funeral for, you know, a 16 year old that died. I just had to pay for a funeral for my homie that died. Ain't nobody speaking on all the deaths in Chicago, but when I go pay for another place just to play basketball, I get all the hatred and all that, you know, all those vibes. So they also have been trained to. This is the norm. Oh, yeah. You know, they do this and, you know, things. It'll be quiet for another week, you know, so this is the norm. So they said it was okay to come back, and I came back.

When you have your conversations with your teammates, where does that happen? Who does the speaking? How is that organized?

No, I just ask questions, you know, like, hey, y'all family's cool. That's my only thing. Like, my thing was like, y'all family's cool. Like, yeah, you know, we, you know, we, you know, they moved there, we here. You know, they in a safe room, you know, everything's cool, you know, just the alarms are kind of loud, you know, that, you know, kind of disturbed, you know, the kids that's in the house. But, you know, just. It's just. And it shouldn't be. And that's the thing. Like, it's. It's just that, you know, I had a teammate tell me, yeah, Pat, when I was twelve years old. You feel me? I'm hooping. And I just. I look up while in the gym and missiles just flying over. You can just go back hooping, you know, like, so obviously, if you've been saying that since you're twelve years old, you get older and that becomes norm. Just like if you seeing and kids in Chicago getting shot the fuck up. Kids shooting kids and kids shooting adults and kids shooting, missing their target and hidden, I don't know, other people and other little kids, you see that all the time.

It becomes a norm. So them, in this situation, I wouldn't say is the norm, but it's something that they've been accustomed to for a long time.

When everybody's saying their part in that meeting or whenever you guys have the conversation what are, like, guys, like, Motley and Kaboklo saying?

Rosh hashanah. So a lot of people are with their families, but. So the city off that strength is pretty quiet. And plus, obviously, the shit that happened yesterday, the city is pretty quiet. But I wrote people outside, restaurants open. It's. Nightclubs open is, you know, it's normal.

You go to get the newspaper in the morning from the newspaper stand is the guy, like, I was crazy shit that happened last night, or are they scared or what's the general vibe?

You know me, I get off plane like they pat, boy, what you looking at? Our boy? Everything cool? Yeah, man. Don't worry about that, man. Everything normal, man. Everything's normal. So. And since I've been back, everything has been normal. One of my old teammates from the Rockets who played here last year was like, had I played there all season, you feel me out. I didn't have to go in a panic room once, and it was another teammate who's played here three, four years. Like, yeah, no, maybe I go, went to the panic room. I don't know, two, three times out of the three, four years I've been here, I go to panic room, maybe 20 minutes, leave, back out, I'm on the beach the next day. So it's a norm that people are used to, that they shouldn't be used to, obviously. But, you know, when it's safe, it's like, everyone knows it's safe.

Panic room is such a nasty word for it. I mean, that makes. It makes me panic even more. Hearing a call to panic room, I feel like they could rename.
