God bless football.
Billy Gill.
God bless football, Mikey.
God bless football, Stugatz. We have the college football semifinals coming up. Got a game down here at the Orange Bowl. We have a game on Friday night as well, the Cotton Bowl. Chris Sims, our buddy, going to the Cotton Bowl. God, I hope they lose so bad. Lucy is going to join us here in just a second. Is that the team? Do you want Texas to lose more than any of the other four teams?
I mean, yeah, but obviously for all the wrong reasons. Just to mess with Chris Sims. By the way, happy Thursday. It's a Thursday episode of God This is football. How about that? As an added bonus, no Mike Fuentes today. So you're going to hear from other people. Like? No, just Lucy. Lucy is going to be on with us. And Taylor's there, but I don't want to scare Taylor by talking to him because then he's going to get I'm a little spooked.
Mikey, are you fired up for this thing? I don't know what I'm doing with college football in this final four, but I don't know. It doesn't excite me. Really? Yeah. I'm excited for five days, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, Monday, watching football. It's probably going to be one of the best weekends of the year. Well, yes, but that's not because of college football. That's because of NFL Super Wild car Weekend. No, it is. They're Thursday and Friday. No, I do love this. Listen, I do love this. The fact that you get a game Thursday Thursday night, you get a game Friday night, and then you get the two wild card games on Saturday, three on Sunday, one on Monday. It is a great five to six days of football. So for that, I am grateful. Yes. It can absolutely let us down. Any of these games can let us down by being blow That's just being terrible games. But we thought Texas, Arizona State was going to be a blowout, and we thought that was going to be a bad game. And I was glued to the TV the whole time. So, hey, maybe we get it, maybe we don't.
Maybe we get it, maybe we don't.
Are you into it? Exactly.
Yeah, I think it'll be fun. Give me something to do on a Thursday night. He loves football. Yeah, I love football. God bless it. That's what I say. We all love football.
We host a show called God Bless Football. Yeah. Yeah, but nobody likes it like Billy.
Nobody loves it.
Well, Billy loves football. You're right. He gets it.
He loves football. Mikemike gets it.
Does anyone love football more than you do?
That's not for me to say. I'm not here to judge others. I'll say it. Yes. Thank you, Mikey. Mikey gets it. Nobody else loves it more than you.
Wait, you're saying yes or no? What are you saying? I'm saying nobody loves football more than Billy G.
Here's That's the thing. As a whole-Even the goalings? As a whole, I love football more than anyone else, potentially. Now, there are people that love aspects of football more than I do. Yes, right. You love all of it, though. Just specific aspects. Yeah, I love all of it.
You love completion. Incompletions, incompletions, penalties. You love challenge flags. You love all of it. He loves a good fall start. Oh, God, I love that.
By the way, I just want to tell you guys, I would love it if you could go to sportspodcastgroup. Com and vote for us for Best American Football Podcast because you have until Monday to vote for us and have us win again and show all of the naysayers out there that said, no, ney. When people said, Can they win again? They said, ney. And last year, they were right. We did not win last year. So It would be great to be at the mountaintop again this year. If we can, we'd love for your vote. Go to sportspodcastgroup. Com and vote for us, please.
We would appreciate that very much. We appreciate your support. What if it gets to Texas, Notre Dame? Who are you guys going to root for? Oh, my gosh. That would be It's perfect for Goblin' football. Worst case scenario. You have Sims versus Golik, who are we rooting for?
It'd be great for the show. It'd be the worst for my mental health. The worst. I wouldn't want it.
We'd be rooting for the Goliks, though, right?
Probably, right? Because if we're going to be honest, Chris Sims, a bit of a Johnny completely. He doesn't care nearly. Exactly right. He doesn't actually care about Texas. The goalings are Notre Dame.
Mike has a house in South Bend. Exactly right. Where's Chris's house?
No one wants to live in South Bend. That's how much he cares.
And Gola can't get there soon enough. Yeah. He loves South Bend, the Linebacker bar, whatever that place is. Whatever it is.
Yeah, whatever that Yeah, exactly right. Chris Sims is just-Flies in for the big game. Not even. Just the big game if it doesn't happen on a Saturday because he has to work. I have to work. I can't take my kids to see football today. So A Thursday game, he can do. A Friday game, he can do. Saturdays, please. We don't even need to get into his relationship with the University of Texas. It's not for me to get into. We're not getting into that. They hate him. We're not getting into it. We're not getting into it.
It's a linebacker lounge, by the way. I'm sorry.
Whatever it is, it doesn't matter.
Golik loves going there.
Oh, of course.
It's got a house there, right? Yeah. Sims flies in for the big games that aren't in Austin, by the way. Yeah. Not in Austin.
Probably private Austin.
Probably in a private jet. Golick, the Golick family, the entire family, they're flying coat.
They literally drive a bus there from their house. They go on a bus from one house to the other house. Now, when you say one house to another house, it takes the mean potatoes out of the relatability to the goalings. You know what I mean? But just remember, bus.
From their Arizona house to their South Bend house.
From one estate to the other. Not even state, estate.
But they're sitting in the back of the plate. The back row of first class on the plate.
Yeah, they're not paying for upgrades on that plane. No chance.
The goalic bus I like.
Hey, what happened to the Madden cruiser we talked about going on? Incidentally, we talked to Madden's son with the hopes of doing something on the Madden cruiser, and I just remembered that now. Season's winding down. How do we get on that bus.
Where are we taking the bus? I forget. I think that we ended up-Super Bowl?
No, I think that we were told that Belichick was doing something with the bus for the Super Bowl. Was it Belichick? I don't even remember. I think we just landed on... We're going to go on a golfing trip with John Madden his son and take his bus there.
I wonder what happened. Yeah.
I'm going to re-engage. Madden?
Yeah.
Because we talked to him when the documentary was coming out or whatever on Amazon, and it's out now. I can understand at the time why a lot of people were reaching out, but now, if we talk to Old Madden Jr, I feel like he wants to do stuff with us, right? Yeah.
Maybe. Hopefully. You think he remembers us?
I think he'd just be happy to talk to some friends. Then when they don't call, he'll be happy to talk to us.
What's your strategy, if Texas indeed wins this thing, to neuter Chris Sims' excitement? Do you remind him how much the school hates him?
I don't know. You don't know yet. I mean, we'll ask him. We got to think about something.
Who did Texas lose to this year? Just Georgia, right?
You know what we got to do? Georgia twice though. You know what we need to do is we need to just go hard on Major Applewhite. You know what I mean? Bring him on, have him be our Texas correspondent, celebrate him.
We only talk NFL with you, Sims.
Look, you're an NFL guy. Major's our guy. Applewhite's our college guy, and he'll get it. It's not the first time he'll have that feeling.
We'll get to Lucy in a second. What's the strategy with Golic if they win?
Just ignore his calls.
No. How about the Northern Illinois coach?
Just to torment him with the guy? He won't care. He'll be national champion.
Yeah, but he lost in Northern Illinois.
I don't want Notre Dame to win. It's not that I don't want Mike to be happy. Look, I know that he goes around and he has the diabetes and all that stuff. I don't know the shape of his ticker. I don't want him to get too worked up and too excited about winning the national championship. Then all of a sudden, no more Mike Kholik. It'd be terrible. Worst case scenario. He gets too excited.
You don't know what winning a championship would do to the ticker.
Might. That's what I'm saying. I'm a little worried. If I was him, I'd be like, Let's get our physical now, just in case, because there's a path. There's a path for them to be national champions. I feel like it's better to address it on the front-end. You know what I mean? Yeah. Then you know, Can I take it? Can I not? Maybe I don't watch the game. Maybe there's something I can do here, there, cut out some red meat, whatever it may be. Walk around the block, glass of wine, all those things. Preemptive, you're saying. Exactly right. Yeah. Now is when you got to start getting your body ready and condition.
You want to start working out now?
Well, I take a working out out of the equation. I just said, Stop eating red meat, drink some wine, walk around the block. Come on, let's be real. There's 10 days here until the potential winning the national championship. There's no amount of working out that's going to change anything. So let's just change our diet a bit or something. Not get too excited.
Are we rooting for Penn State? I don't know what we're doing. You love football.
I just love it. I don't root for anyone. I just root for football. And for the next five days, we got it. For the next five days, I win.

Did you do anything fun? How was the Rose Bowl?
It was boring as well. It gave me horrible flashbacks to when I went as a fan and Iowa lost by 30 points. But it's always nice to be back in LA, so I spent the week in LA. And yeah, the Rose Bowl, it's always like, even if the game sucks, it's such a beautiful, surreal experience. Every time I go, I'm just so grateful.
You seem a little down in the dumps right now. I don't know what it is.
You seem down on college football, the one thing that you love.
I want to play a game with you if you would like. I'll work up. No, it's not Goosy or Goosy. It's not necessarily a fun game, but I feel like it might be a necessary game. It's called What's Good. I used to play this with my friend Allison Turner all the time, usually on the phone. This is how it works. If one of us was down in the dumps, we'd say, What's Good? We just try to put out into the universe all the good things that we should be happy about?
I have something good. Okay. You do? I have something good that no one thought would happen. I didn't think would happen. The world didn't think would happen. I think the universe is pushing back on us because this happened. Are you guys ready? .
Oh, wow. You're taking over the game. I love it.
You ready?
Yeah.
Iowa got a quarterback. Wow.
A good one. A good one. There's no such thing as a good Iowa quarterback. Yeah, we got one. That's good. South Dakota State. I think Billy was in the process, though, of explaining to you how to play the game. Is there a way she has to deliver that Billy?
No, she gets it.
I won.
She just won the game, apparently. Wow. And his last name- He got a quarterback. Gronowski.
Oh,wow.
I feel like his brothers are going to be on this show at any point. Yes.
Feels more like a defensive tackles name, right?
Mark Grunowski.
Mark Grunowski. Holding number 73 Grunowski.
Are you ready to have a quarterback?
Yes. Okay. Yes. That's a good question. I've lived a long life without an Iowa quarterback. I'm 26. Twenty-six years. We've had some bright moments here and there. Shout out Ricky Stanzi. But we've got a quarterback. This was the top guy in the portal remaining, but still very exciting.
How many guys left before he was the top guy remaining? Yeah, exactly.
Okay. So there was the John Batiste from Wazoo. People really wanted him. They wanted Jackson Arnold from Oklahoma, and they wanted our guy Mark, but we got him.
You got the third best quarterback in the portal, which is big news for Iowa. You should be happy today.
No, number one in my heart.
Yeah, number one at the time. I believe that's good. Also, Quin Ewer is probably going to be in the portal at some point.
Yes, but not going to Iowa. But at the time. We can afford him.
He was the number one at the time.
What do you make of that, Lucy? That whole story. Where we've arrived at a guy who might forego the NFL draft and go to another college for a fifth season for, I guess the reports are somewhere between 6 to $10 million a year, which is more than he would make in the NFL. We've arrived there and we've gotten there pretty quickly, which is amazing.
I think I've of the minority in this where I think that rocks. We have seen so many times where great college quarterbacks have gone to the NFL and been terrible, or so many times where you've been just electric in college football and hadn't even had the chance to go to the NFL. So when you Heavers is a guy that's had ups and downs this season. We're not necessarily, I don't believe he'll be a fantastic NFL quarterback. So for him to get the chance to make as much money as he can right now, I'm all for it. I want everyone to get paid and be happy.
It feels like 12 teams was about seven too many. What do you think?
Yeah, I liked this last round. I thought seeing what happened with Texas, Arizona State made the expansion worth it. I still think we went a little too far overboard with 12 teams. I've been telling you guys that forever. But I also think the biggest problem with the 12 team playoff, at least in the first round, was how everyone just wouldn't shut up about how much it sucked. I think that if we stopped talking so much about how it sucked, I think we would have enjoyed it more. I'm looking at you, all the ESPN announcement.
This is how I'm trying to look at it, Lucy, right? Is that it's been somewhat disappointing so far, right? It hasn't been the level of excitement I think that everybody was hoping for, but-There's been one great game. There's been one great game, but now is when last year's playoffs kick in. You know what I mean? Now is the payoff. The real payoff. Now is the real playoffs. The other stuff was extra playoffs. Now is the real playoffs. Even though we live in a world where Penn State or Notre Dame might be national champions. Well, we do.
But Lucy, I do wonder, if we were under the old college football playoff system last year, and they were just selecting four teams. Of the four teams that are playing, two on Thursday, two on Friday, of the four teams that are playing, which team gets left out because Oregon is in?
Probably Ohio State would have gotten left out. Two losses. It's funny because Ohio State right now is the team to beat. They look better than everyone else, and they feel like a clear favorite right now to win the national championship, which Which is why this 12-team playoff or expanded playoff is better, because potentially, we don't know. Actually, I think last year is the perfect example. Georgia probably was the best team in the country, but they lost two games and they were not able to go play in the SEC or the college football playoff after losing the SEC Championship. You're going to not run into that anymore, where Ohio State might be the best team in the country, but they would have been out with the Oregon loss and Michigan loss. So I do think that the expanded playoff has issues. I think they're fixable issues shoes. I think seating is weird. I think the conference championship thing is weird. But for the most part, we are seeing maybe not the four best teams. I don't know if I'd put Penn State in there. But sorry, Penn State, you've been playing well. I don't know why I'm on you.
That was unnecessary.
You've been telling us all season you like Penn State, that Penn State is legit good. Listen, the one benefit of the playoff is we found out... No, you did. You said that at one point.
Yeah, all the time. You said it all the time.
You say it all the time. You said it every week.
Sometimes you just text me.
I'm in a bad mood. Don't worry about it.
I think the one benefit of the playoff is at least we figured out before we got to the final four that Oregon stinks.
We played what's good to get you out of the bad mood. We can't still be in the bad mood.
No, Iowa got a quarterback. That's why I'm not excited for Notre Dame, Penn State. I've left that type of football in the past. Did you get new headphones? I'm not familiar with that anymore. No, I've had these for a while.
I thought maybe that was a good thing. I was trying to point out something good.
No, I've had these for a long time.
Sorry. Which of the two games are you most excited for?
Definitely Texas, Ohio State. Notre Dame, Penn State is a perfect sickos game, and I still am a sicko at heart. If you like defense, yay, Orange Bowl. If you want just crazy shit to happen, Texas, Ohio State is a little more up that alley. I will say we have to look out. They might postpone that game. There's supposed to be really bad weather in the Dallas area, like lots of snow. People won't be able to get to the stadium. So things are up in the air with that right now. But I just think that that game has the potential for a lot more explosive fun things to happen. I think Notre Dame, Penn State is going to be very similar to Notre Dame, Georgia, where it took a long time for anything to happen.
Billy, are you excited for this? I feel like you're not as...
I'm excited.
Are you? Yeah. Why not? I mean, you love Penn State, huh?
It'll be fun. Yeah. You don't think it'll be fun?
I don't know. I have to be honest, I missed the 14 playoff. I mean, I don't like... Lucy, these games were bad. We had all this time to sit around and figure out how we're going to do a 12-team playoff, and what we came up with is Boise State getting a buy week. Arizona State on a buy week. Something feels wrong about it. I don't feel like we saw the best 12 teams in the country.
But we have meaningful football now, Thursday and Friday. We have it anyway. Heading into Wild Hard Weekend on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. If you're just a football lover, you have five straight days of football that matters.
Maybe it's the newness of it, Lucy. Just something feels off about this college football season. I don't know.
Yeah, I don't feel that. I think that there are issues with the playoff format. I know that you say, Okay, they had all this time to figure it out. These are people who I don't trust their judgment, period. That's fair. We just need the right people making the right decisions. I think we're going to see some changes definitely in seeding is Oregon objectively got screwed, where you are the only undefeated team remaining, and yet you have to play Ohio State in your first round. That sucks. That doesn't really seem fair. Where maybe if Oregon had pinned State's path, it probably would have been a little bit front. Seeding, I think most likely we're going to see things change where it's not the four conference championships, but just the rankings as they are. Also, I think conference championships are just superfluous at this point. I don't think they really serve any purpose. I think you could just get rid of that. It's interesting that all four teams on a buy lost. Things are odd. It's going to take some fixing. It's going to take some reworking. But you still have Texas, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Penn State in the playoff.
Those are four very good football teams, and they're evenly matched, maybe not as much than the Texas, Ohio State game with the way Ohio State's playing right now. But it will all course correct. It's just this was a first year, a trial year, and we need people who are better at making decisions, making the decision.
The funny thing about the seating that you're mentioning is because we ask you if it was just the classic four teams, would any of these teams not be in it? You're like, Well, three of the four would probably still be in the four. But when you look at the seedings, it's teams five, six, seven, and eight. Then if you're not really paying attention and saying, Well, three of the four of them are actually the four best teams of the country. Because of the wonky seedings, you could look at the numbers and go, Wow, this is working out great. None of these teams would have been in the play. I was like, No, three of the four probably would have been in the play anyways.
I need a one seed in the final four. That's the thing. Billy, you had done That's what we're doing. We have an eight versus a six. It doesn't make sense.
The initial champion is best case scenario, going to be a five seed. Worst case scenario, an eight seed, which I feel like is what's throwing you off here, is that you don't want a national champion that has a little number seven to their name or an eight. Right.
Wouldn't Texas also have been out because Georgia won the SEC?
Yeah, Texas might have made it just because the only two losses were to the same team. My question for you, Stu, is had that targeting call gone differently in Arizona State, Texas, Arizona State then wins that game. Is your position on this any different?
What seat is Arizona State?
What was it? I think they were the four.
So I have a four next to their name. I don't want Arizona State in my college football final Four. I don't. Not today, not tomorrow, not ever. No, I don't. I'll take Iowa. I mean, Iowa is fine. I do not want an Arizona- Do you have a quarterback? Listen, I've said the same thing about March Madness in college basketball. I am fine with the Cinderellos right up until the Elite 8. Then get the hell out of my final four. I don't need them. I don't want them. I mean, who wants Arizona State? You do. I do.
Really? I do. So Cam Skatevo was so fun. And that was just like, that game was like, if that game had gone differently and trended the way we thought after the first half, the Texas was just going to run away with it. I think we would have some serious playoff discourse about Is this format right? Is this not? Even though we're having that conversation right now. But Arizona State giving us that miracle performance really saved the idea of automatic bids and stuff like that. Things are going to continue to change and warp with the playoff. But Arizona State, weird enough, are saviors or darlings. Who would have thought?
Billy, you identified the problem. It's an eight next to Ohio State. Now they're this scrappy eight seed who made it to the final four. They're the most talented, flabbergine team in the country.
Well, you made a curse.
They did lose to Michigan.
Wait, Lucy, if you had- That's a good loss. Quality loss, Lucy. I know you love those. They beat Alabama. What the heck?
Make me feel better. Put better numbers next to these teams. If you were to rank the four teams remaining, how would you rank them? One through four.
Okay. Okay. I would go Ohio State, one, Notre Dame, two, Texas, three, Penn State, four. Okay.
All right. I feel better.
Why?
Because there's a one, two, three, and a four, and not a six, seven, five, and an eight. That's all right. I don't know.
Why don't you just re-rate for yourself and then just count that? You can do whatever you want.
Yeah, I guess you're right. What's the- Arizona State made the playoff.
There's no rules.
I don't want Arizona State in my playoff. What's the Championship game you're most waiting for? Is it Notre Dame, Ohio State?
I think so. Yeah, I think that's where I'm reading. I think that's the best matchup. Notre Dame has been an interesting case because they didn't really play a particularly tough schedule this season. To see the way that they played against both Indiana and Georgia was super, super convincing. I do know that Korsenbeck didn't play for Georgia, but that ended up not being the problem. Gunner had a really good game, and it was just Notre Dame was dominant defensively. They did everything they wanted to do. Yeah, that feels like the best matchup right now, the two most talented teams. Although I think, funny as case scenario is Ohio State-Pin State in the National Championship game, and then James Franklin losing the big game to Ohio State again. That's hilarious.
Yeah, but he's big game James now because he's 2-0 in the postseason. That's the other problem I have. I said this at the beginning of the season. All a 12-team playoff does is prolong the career of James Franklin, who couldn't get in when it was four teams.
Wasn't that funny, though?
Yes.
Yeah. It Isn't that worth it?
We can't live in a world where Notre Dame's national champion, right, Lucy? We just can't. We can't have that world.
Does Jess listen to this show?
No, probably not.
Which fan?
No, we can't. We cannot. If she does listen, they can.
She can't. We Just listen to this show. Lucy, this is how I was trying to spin it earlier this week to tell Stugatz because the reality is Jess, the goal looks… It's not that I don't want them to be happy. I just don't want to hear about Notre Dame from them and everyone else in the world. I don't want to hear about Penn State, though? No, I won't hear about Penn State. I live in circles where I'm not going to hear about Penn State. We don't know anyone. Yes, you're right. I'm fine. Here's the thing, and this is the way that I was trying to spin it. I'm like, because Stugatz is like, Wouldn't it be great for the goal looks if Notre Dame won? I was like, It actually would be really for the goalings if Notre Dame won? I was like, it actually would be really bad for the goalings if Notre Dame won, because right now, the goalings have a monopoly on the faces of Notre Dame publicly in the media. Then when there's paid speaking appearances at Notre Dame, homecoming, this and that, Notre Dame, they bring them As soon as Notre Dame wins a national championship, old news.
We're going to have all of the present Notre Dame players getting all of those opportunities.
We're recently graduated players, right?
It's best for the goalings for Notre Dame to continue to lose.
Otherwise, Kyle Rudolf's taking over. That's what I'm thinking.
I'm with you. I don't actually believe that. That's just how I'm saying it, so I don't sound like a jerk saying, I just don't want them to be happy.
I want all my friends to be happy. Same, but not them. Actually, Jessica, more than everyone else. However, I hate Notre Dame getting rewarded for not joining a conference. You think you're better than me. No, you're not. You're a Big Ten team, and you know it.
They were ahead of the times, Lucy. They were, Notre Dame.
Yeah, and it's very frustrating because they have the perfect system built. It just works out perfectly for them, and it's going to work out perfectly for them every other year. Whereas us Holy schools and conferences are going to continue to have to fight and struggle, and I'm not okay with that.
More annoying fan base, Notre Dame or Penn State?
Probably Notre Dame, but not Jessica. She's never been annoying in her life, ever. She's perfect and never made a mistake. And anyone who says she has is lying.
How about Texas, Ohio State? Annoying fan base?
I would say Ohio State. My hot take is Ohio State fans aren't that bad. There's just one small group of them that are just so loud and so awful and so bad that the rest of them get lumped in. Ohio State fans were beyond pleasant. Well, it was before the game for Michigan, Ohio State, and I've had a great experience. Texas fans also super nice. So I'm going to say just the small segment of Ohio State fans, but not the entire fan base.
If you gave Ryan Day the choice of playing any of the three remaining playoff teams besides his team to play Ohio State, if you gave Ryan Day the choice of playing Texas, Penn State, Notre Dame or Michigan? Does he choose Michigan?
Oh, not a chance. No way.
They're the worst team by far, Lucy.
Yeah, it doesn't matter. Who cares?
It doesn't matter.
You could win the national If he had to play Michigan in an exhibition game after and he loses, they're going to boo him out of Columbus. No shot would he choose Michigan. He would pick Penn State every single day. He's going to try to start convincing all of us that Ohio State, Penn State is a bigger rivalry. But he's the best coach of the four coaches remaining.
I think Ryan Day is probably the best coach, right?
No, yeah. He's a phenomenal coach. Look at the way that Ohio State has played this postseason. They're beating the shit out of everyone they play, including a very good Tennessee team and even better Oregon team. He has put together such a dominant performance, which watching that Rosewell game, I was like, Wow, this is just an ass kicking. This is great. Okay, we're done. I'm just going to scroll on Twitter, whatever. Then always the thought creeps in How did they lose to Michigan? How did that happen? That game gets dumber every single day. I do think he's a very good coach, but you got to figure it out against those guys.
We're potentially going to have a national champion that lost to Michigan or a national champion that lost to Northern Illinois. What is going on?
I love that.
I love that. Who's the quarterback you trust the most headed into the final four here?
Oh, That's a good question. I don't necessarily know if I really trust a lot of these guys, especially with maybe, Riley Leonard. He hasn't been phenomenal. He wasn't great against Georgia, but he can run. Will Howard just wakes up and decides if he wants to be a good quarterback or not. You just can't really tell. That's why I still have a little trepidation with Ohio State. Maybe Quinn Ewer's definitely not Drew Aller. I don't think it's a particularly strong quarterback class for this final four.
Billy, it just dawned on me, we should have the, if Notre Dame wins, have the Northern Illinois coach on with Golic, and he should anoint himself the national champion. Wow. Okay.
What do you think? I'm down with that.
You cannot have a team win a national championship that has lost to Northern Illinois. You can't. There's something off about this. And the Super Wild car Weekend doesn't help because now college football and its final two games and these championship games feels like an advertiser to the NFL.
But they're going to have their own game for the national championship. It's fine.
They should have a standalone, Lucie.
I think that the biggest issue should be moving the national championship to a Saturday. Let's quit doing this Monday.
That's stupid. Wow. Now we're starting to interfere-We're Saturday Sport. Nfl, though. Yeah. You were on Saturday.
Yeah, well, that's not their day. All they want to do is take our day.
This time of year it is.
I don't care what they want. Lucy, they wanted Christmas. No one cares what I want. They took Christmas. You got a quarterback.
Yeah, exactly. We take it a quarterback. One thing at a time.
Santa Claus brought you a quarterback.
Just be happy with Grunowski.
We're going to ruin him.
That's probably true.
We're going to ruin him.
It's such a great question. People often ask me what Billy was asking you about having a quarterback and if that changes things. I don't know, Mikey, how would you respond if the Jets won a Super Bowl? I feel like it would take away from the luster and the pain of being a Jet fan, don't you? I wouldn't know how to act if they won a Super Bowl. I'm sure I wouldn't know either, but you know what? I'd I'd love to find out. I'd love to find out if it changes anything. I like being this miserable fan base, though. I'm used to it. No, I'm good. We can change it. That's why, because I thought Lucy was okay because she's been in it so long, being that team in the Big Ten that scores six points a game. I thought she loved that. There was something bonding with a fan base about that. Now you lose that when you're scoring 52 a game, Lucy.
Okay, well, we'll never score 52 a game.
We might if this guy's good.
I think if there's one person to blame, and I hate to blame her because I think she's also perfect and never made a mistake, Kaitlyn Clarke gave me a little taste of what it's like to see just someone so electric playing for your favorite team, to go to the national championship twice. I've been just feasting for like, I need another one of those moments. It's like a drug. I'm like, We have to go back to the national championship. I don't care what sport it is because she was so Patrick. So now that we have a quarterback who I don't think is Caitlin Clark, but I still think he's very, very good, I'm like, I can see it. Twelve team playoff, I love it. Let's expand it, actually. Expand it just to the number where Iowa gets in, and we lose in the first round, and I'll be very pleased.
He's no Chuck Long, Lizzie.
No, it's Chuck Long. Come on.
Wait, do you have a top five Iowa quarterbacks of all time? This would be great.
I think I could. Yeah, I could do it. Okay. Can I go just one to five? Because that's easier.
You can go one to five. Chuck Long is going to be one, right? Yeah. Chuck Long is one. It's Iowa quarterbacks. Do it however you want.
Yes, you're right.
Okay, so Chuck Long is one. I thought you were going to put the kid that you just got out of the portal at number one. But anyway, go ahead.
No, not yet. Okay, so Chuck Long is one. Closest Management vote ever. Brad Banks is two. I forgot about Brad Banks. Brad Banks is electric. He was our only quarterback that was ever really a great dual threat guy. And Kerr Farrens came out and was like, I really didn't want him to play here, but it worked out. We were like, Okay. All right. Three. We'll include the new guy. We'll do Mark. Mark, welcome. You're my top five. High expectations. Four, maybe not the... He's my personal favorite, Ricky Stanzi. I love him. That was my first childhood crush. Huge fan of Ricky Stanzi. Then five, we'll go C. J. Beathard. Why not?
Okay. That's it? The guy who hasn't played a snap for Iowa is number three. I love that.
Yeah, well, I have high for him. I didn't feel this way when Kate McNamaker committed.
I did it. All right, who's going to win these games? It's going to be different. Who's going to win these games, Lucy? Tell us.
I think Ohio State beats Texas probably by 10 points. I think Notre Dame beats Penn State by three points.
And Notre Dame, Ohio- And that score is three to nothing. Three to nothing. And Notre Dame, Ohio State, what are you thinking there?
I think Ohio State wins. If they continue to play the way they're doing, it's tough for anybody to beat them.
Does Ryan Day get fired if they win?
If they win, Ryan Day does not get fired, but they're like, Hey, buddy. Hey, we see this. We're not forgetting about this.
All right? Would Ohio State rather have beaten Michigan and lose in the Championship game?
I'm going to say no on that. I'm going to say the crazy little segment that Kerb Curb Street always references, They Feel That Way. But just to be a Michigan fan, which I am not, but to be a Michigan fan, see Ohio State win the National Championship. They're one of their teams ever. One of the best teams in college football history. To have beaten that team has probably got to feel pretty great.
I think Michigan should throw a parade in Ann Arbor if Ohio State wins the national team. They should. Can we get behind that? You and I, can we get behind it? Can you...
Michigan is going to be the first team to ever be national champions and then repeat as transitive national champions.
All right, Lucy, have a safe trip down here. I'm glad you perked up towards the end of this because college football is the thing that you love, and it It seems to make you sad now. Yeah. Yeah.
It's hard for you to relate. I have a quarterback now. I've completely changed this person.
Wow. The third greatest quarter- I remember we had Aaron Rodgers. We had Aaron Rodgers.
We thought we had one, too. That is true.
We thought we had one. They were not the same.
Hold on a second. What happened? Mike just said we thought we had a quarterback, too. Well, we did. Yeah, but we're implying here that Mark Grunowski is not going to pan out potentially.
Well, Mark Grunowski is not Aaron Rodgers either, but anyway.
Yeah, he's better. He's better than Aaron Rodgers. Do you know how hard it is to win a national championship at South Dakota State? Not that hard.
I was going to say, don't they win every year?
Yeah, no, it's really not that hard.
They didn't win this year. It's them or North Dakota State.
Oh, wow. They didn't win this year, so you got the bad one. You got their bad quarterback. They got rid of him. They're like, Oh, this guy can't get the job done. Send him to Iowa.
He was too focused on the future. He was just dreaming of 21, 14 final scores being like, I'm going to change this program.
It is the good thing about all the college football changes, the portal. The good thing about it is that kid can go to Iowa now and have a platform that's big enough where if he's good, the NFL is going to come call him. Yeah.
Even if he's not good, he probably got paid a lot of money to go to Iowa. Right.
How much do you think he got paid?
$72.
Wow. It's got to be at least- $72. It's got to be like 2 million, though, right?
All I know is that I think Cade McNamara allegedly got 100K.
Cade McNamara? How How many games did he start?
Money down the drain. Oh, God. Too many.
He was very bad. College football. Going from South Dakota to Iowa, is he going to be able to handle the budding metropolis? Is he going to be in all that nightlife and stuff?
That's a good question. I think he's from Naperville. So Naperville basically is a feeder system. Everyone from Naperville goes to the University of Iowa, so he'll be home. He's already ready. We're going to ruin him.
A budding metropolis. All right, Lizzie, enjoy the games. Enjoy your new quarterback. We'll see you down here in South Florida.
I'll see you in the playoff next year, actually.
Stugotz, Billy and Mikey A are joined by Lucy to preview the Orange Bowl between Penn State and Notre Dame and the Cotton Bowl between Texas and Ohio State. Lucy is also super excited for a certain BIG10 School's acquisition of quarterback in the transfer portal.
