Thousands are feared dead after massive earthquakes strike outside Caracas. Republicans get some wins from the Supreme Court, and authorities discover billions more in fraud. I'm Daily Wire Executive Editor John Bickley with Georgia Howe. It's Thursday, June 25th. This is Evening Wire.

00:01:22

Two massive earthquakes struck one after the other in Venezuela and put thousands of lives at risk. A 7.2 magnitude quake struck Wednesday evening near San Felipe, west of Caracas. Less than a minute later, a 7.5 magnitude quake hit 3 miles away. Back-to-back earthquakes are a rare and incredibly deadly phenomenon, and the UN estimates they took down at least 100 buildings just in the worst-hit state of La Guaira. The shock of the earthquakes was felt as far away as Brazil. Early assessments put the death toll at over 160,, but some fear thousands may have died. Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed reporters on the U.S. response on Thursday.

00:02:01

I had an opportunity to talk earlier this morning with Delcy Rodriguez, the acting president. We're already deploying search and rescue teams from Fairfax County, Virginia, and Los Angeles. That's their most immediate need right now is search and rescue efforts. They have a bunch of collapsed buildings, and so they'll need a lot of help in terms of digging through that.

00:02:19

Rubio said the U.S. was working with Venezuelan authorities to assess the damage and would determine a plan for long-term assistance after emergency needs were addressed. Venezuela has also received pledges of help from many other countries such as Argentina, El Salvador, and Mexico.

00:02:34

The Supreme Court handed down a slate of decisions today likely to please Republicans. Daily Wire contributor Tim Pearce has the details.

00:02:41

Two of those rulings delivered major wins for the Trump administration on immigration. In one decision, the court ruled that immigrants who were turned away at the border before entering the U.S. are not entitled to claim asylum. The other ruling is related to Haitian and Syrian nationals in the U.S. under temporary protected status from the Biden administration. The court found that those nationals are not entitled to judicial relief while they challenge the Trump administration's efforts to strip their protected status. And a third opinion overturned a Hawaii gun law that has been criticized by Second Amendment advocates. That law mandated gun owners receive permission before they carry firearms into grocery stores, gas stations, and other private businesses that are otherwise open to the public.

00:03:20

Speaking of court cases, a federal appeals court blocked the Trump administration from getting Michigan's list of registered voters. The Sixth Circuit is the first appeals court to rule as the Justice Department tries to access unredacted voter information for more than two dozen states. The 2-to-1 vote found that federal civil rights law does not entitle the federal government to unrestricted access to state voter rolls. Judge Andre Mathis wrote that the law gave the government power to ensure that everyone who had the right to vote could freely exercise that right. But today the government invokes Title III for an inverse purpose, to ensure that some people have not voted.

A crypto exchange founded by a Chinese engineer has become a major hub for Iranian crypto. Daily Wire editor Zach Jewell has more.

00:04:06

An independent analysis of blockchain transactions connected Iran's central bank with CoinEx, a crypto exchange based in the Seychelles in Africa. The blockchain intelligence firm TRM Labs traced crypto stolen by North Korean hackers to Iran's central bank. From there, the crypto flowed through a series of online transactions, eventually into CoinEx exchange, where Iranians have access to a global crypto network. CoinEx has denied any relationship with the government of Iran, though the exchange began to crack down on Iranian users earlier this month. The U.S. has taken action against crypto exchanges in the past over transactions with Tehran as the U.S. Treasury enforces sanctions.

Crackdowns on Medicare fraud have uncovered more than $6.5 billion in medical scams. Federal investigations across 45 states have led to the arrests of 455 fraudsters, including dozens of doctors and other medical professionals. One Las Vegas nurse, Marizel Yuqui, is alleged to have personally scammed taxpayers out of nearly $300 million. Authorities seized millions in assets from Yuqui, including a $600,000 Ferrari and a necklace worth nearly $1 million. At least one other case involves a doctor who reflexively ordered superfluous tests to overcharge Medicare without properly reviewing results, leading to confirmed preventable deaths. Many of the fraudsters are accused of sending their illicit profits to foreign countries.

The New Mexico government has called for a criminal probe of the Drug Enforcement Administration for allowing hundreds of thousands thousands of fentanyl pills to hit the streets while the agency targeted larger drug trafficking cases. New Mexico's Governor Michelle Grisham called the actions of the DEA, quote, reckless, in a statement and added, quote, make no mistake, the DEA knew people would die if these pills made it into New Mexico communities, and the agency let it happen anyway. Grisham has told her attorney general to determine whether the agency can be prosecuted for violating New Mexico state law. Fentanyl remains one of the deadliest threats to American health, with New Mexico being one of the states most affected by the drug.

American beverage makers are going maja with a new ingredient transparency tool. Here with Moore's assistant editor Andy Valdez.

00:07:22

The American Beverage Association has unveiled a first-of-its-kind system that allows shoppers to simply scan a QR code to access clear information about beverage ingredients. The codes direct users to a third-party website called goodtoknowfacts.com. It provides, quote, factual, non-industry information about more than 140 beverage ingredients. Good to Know Facts pulls information not just from the FDA, but also European and Canadian regulatory sites. Its bottom line section usually states where the ingredient has authorized use. The ABA has a goal of adding the QR code to virtually all beverages sold in America by the end of 2027.

A French doctor tested positive for Ebola after returning home from a humanitarian mission to the Democratic Republic of Congo. A list of passengers that the patient was in contact with on the flight is being reported to health authorities. Luckily, the risk of a wider outbreak appears to be relatively low since there is better access to hygiene and generally cleaner and less cramped living conditions in Europe. The virus is also not too contagious and has a 25% fatality rate compared to past Ebola strains that had a 50% fatality rate. The infected doctor was isolated when he arrived in France before he was officially diagnosed. The Prime Minister is monitoring the situation very closely. Government documents show that the Biden administration went around a court order to enforce its own interpretation of Title IX rules. Daily Wire reporter Meg Brock has the story.

00:08:49

President Biden's Education Department had interpreted Title IX to cover sexual orientation and gender identity and had taken action against public schools on that basis, but the enforcement efforts were supposed to stop after a federal court issued an injunction. According to Fox News, the U.S. Office of Special Counsel looked into the matter and concluded that whistleblower allegations that the Biden administration circumvented the court were, quote, fully substantiated. Investigators concluded that the Education Department under Biden created, quote, a path for carrying out its preferred sexual orientation and gender identity policies around the court order.

And a giraffe is on the loose in Texas after escaping from a breeding facility. Gracie, a 4-year-old reticulated giraffe, fled Cedar Hollow Ranch in Reel County, Texas. Cedar Hollow is a private exotic breeding facility that's home to hundreds of animals native to Africa and the Middle East. The giraffe reportedly vanished after feeding on an isolated hillside and finding an unfenced area. The last official sighting of Gracie was taken on a hunting camera west of Leakey, Texas, which sits about 100 miles northwest of San Antonio. Despite a wave of AI-generated sightings of Gracie, she's not yet been found, and there's a $5,000 reward for tips leading to her safe return.
