Most companies who hired recent college graduates this year have already fired at least one of them, according to this new report that just came out. Complaints about Gen Z workers include not enough motivation or initiative, poor communication, and lack of professionalism. Dagen McDonald is here, co-host of The Bottom Line, of course, on Fox Business, going on two years doing that show, which is amazing. Great. Dagen, like I said, I have three Gen Xers in my house, and they are very hard workers. We both know people who work here who are great, who are super sharp. But this doesn't surprise me that this is a larger issue.

00:00:41

It's a big issue. Anecdotally, it makes itself apparent. Then also in these surveys, one of which you were cited. If you were interviewing me for a job, and I'm Gen Z, it's as if I go and do an interview and say, Hi, I'm an unskilled I'm an ego maniac. I have a degree in folklore and $200,000 in student loan debt. I'm a sourpuss, which you would know from my Trump rants on the talk. If you decide that you want to hire me, I will treat all work assignments, even the simplest ones, as microaggression. I will turn your workplace into a living hell.

00:01:24

I was like, Oh, thank you. Here's the door. The door is right over there.

00:01:28

But that's how many of them behave. They don't... So it is the generation that is a confluence of where they're detached from reality because of social media and their helicopter parents. They don't know how to behave in the workplace. There was one in a Wall Street Journal article, it was a company that runs travel sites, said they had to be told about simple workplace norms. Say your The presentation shouldn't be 40 slides long. When you're in a virtual meeting, don't leave nasty, snarky comments about other employees in the presentation. Again, detachment from reality because of social media. However, I'm going to shut up. You can talk to me, but I have the other side of this because I talked to an executive who does a lot of hiring in technology today and said that Gen Z gets a bad rap. Really? Yes. Said that a lot of businesses don't make the effort to interview candidates. It's about putting buts in seats. Where'd you go to school? What degree you got? This is what you get when you make no effort to figure out who you're trying to hire. This person told me that if you tell a Gen Z what you want from them and give them exact demands, they will meet to meet those demands.

00:03:01

But they're not afraid of getting fired, and they're not afraid of quitting. So they're very much like Gen X. So millennials are more like baby boomers, and Gen Z is more like the Gen X.

00:03:13

We had kids, my kids, who were starting jobs during COVID, and we just kept telling them, If the door is open, go sit at the desk and tell them you're there and you're ready to work, and be the first person at work in the morning, because you will be amazed by how quickly people notice your industriousness It is true. I do think that parents are to blame a bit in terms of making sure your kids are putting their best foot forward and they're working really hard and also schools and all of that. I love this other thing from Matt Walsh, which we don't have time for, saying that people shouldn't be using their sick days. He said, You should be embarrassed to take a sick day. Now, obviously, if you are sick, people understand. But I remember someone saying to me, I'm going to take off next Tuesday because I have an extra sick day and I need to go shopping. I was like, What? That's so disingenuous.

00:04:03

You can't do that. But on the flip side, the Gen Z will be... So Gen X was like the guys who found in Google because they didn't want to work for these stuck in the mud companies like IBM and Microsoft. And so you will have this generation really being disruptors. And this person told me, I can't wait to see the companies that the Gen Z found.Fascinating.Degan.

00:04:27

Thank you so much. It's always good to see you. Great to see you. Thank you for coming by today.
