After just 3 months in power, the French prime minister Michel Barnier has resigned. So how come there's no election? Well, under France's constitution, you can't call more than 1 parliamentary election in a year, And president Emmanuel Macron called a snap parliamentary vote back in July, which resulted in a hung parliament with no party having a majority. Now it's not like the UK here. In France, the president can pick who should be the prime minister, and Macron chose Michel Barnier.

So now he's looking for a new prime minister who can unite a very divided French parliament and actually get a budget passed and govern. That won't be easy. It was Barnier's austerity budget which triggered his downfall. Polls show a majority of the French think that Macron should resign too, blaming him for the country's political turmoil. But he says he's staying until the end of his term in 2027, and he thinks those calling for him to go are living in what he calls political fiction.
