Transcript of #32 Adam Sud on Treating Addiction with a Plant-Based Diet
When we feel like we're broken or unworthy, we can wind up finding fixes in unhealthy places. In 2018, almost 53 million people aged 12 years and older misused prescription drugs in the United States. As addiction rates continue to climb, the health of the nation is declining. One popular solution for those seeking help is to treat the addiction and subsequent health issues with more medication. While this can work for some, others find that a plant-based diet is swiftly becoming the key to a healthy recovery. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they'll inspire you, too. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. So, if you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you. At first glance, you could say that Adam is your average kind of guy. But scratch the surface a little, and you'll quickly see that he's pretty extraordinary indeed. Adam's story surrounds drug and food addiction, isolation, body dysmorphia, desperation, but also gratitude, acceptance, and redemption. After becoming hooked on Adderall in high school, Adam spent most of his twenties going through a constant cycle of drug abuse and binge eating fast-foods. The more he consumed, the heavier he got. And the worse he started to feel within himself. As a result of his all-consuming lifestyle, during the peak of his addiction, he was over 300lbs with Type-2 diabetes. Broke, unemployed, and completely cut off from family and friends, the time had come. By August 21st, 2012, he had to make a choice- was he in, or was he out? All his fear, anger, and self-loathing had pushed him to breaking point. Late one night, he attempted suicide by drug overdose. Fortunately for us and everyone that loves him, it was a failed attempt. Finally, Adam reached out for help. After several stays in rehab and sober living facilities, he found sobriety. Also, he lost over 100 pounds, reversed his diabetes, and repaired his physical health, thanks to an active, plant-based lifestyle. Now, Adam is a Certified Holistic Lifestyle Coach and graduate of eCornell's Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate Program. He is a diabetes and food addiction coach for Mastering Diabetes. He’s also an international speaker for the plant-based and addiction recovery movements. In this episode, Adam recounts his fascinating story- and guys, let me tell you, it's intense. First, he jumps right into where his addiction stemmed from, the heartache he felt and how he turned his life around so he can now devote his life to others. Also, we discuss how his plant-based diet reversed his diabetes and repaired his physical health. Adam discusses his most recent work, including The INFINITE Study. This ground-breaking study aims to explore the effects of nutrient-dense diets and nutrition education in early addiction recovery. Transcript of #30 Steven Sashen on Running Barefoot
25% of the bones and joints in your entire body are located in your feet and ankles. Also, you have over 200,000 nerve endings on the sole of each foot. So why are we covering up these sensory powerhouses with padding and cushioning? Walking around or even running barefoot, or with footwear designed to let the feet be feet, can improve our overall physical health in ways we never imagined. Steven Sashen dives into things feet first. In fact, it’s his company motto. Xero Shoes was built out of a need for Steven to free his feet. After picking up sprinting again following a 30 year hiatus, Steven would injure himself constantly. Every couple of weeks would bring another pulled muscle or ankle strain. When a friend suggested a barefoot run, everything changed. After his first run with a barefoot running group, Steven was awakened with a new awareness of how his feet interacted with the ground. He ran 5K on that very first go around and was shocked at how easy it felt on his body. He was even able to pinpoint a reason for why he was injuring one leg more than the other. All this knowledge was too empowering to ignore, and Xero Shoes was born. In this conversation, Steven and I get into how incredibly powerful and intuitive our feet really are. We explore the foot to brain connection and how the modern day athletic shoe is counterproductive to the way we physically interact with the ground under our feet. Steven gives us the origin story of Xero Shoes, which gives you an understanding of why I refer to him as a “Master of Movement”. So kick off your shoes, and take a listen to this one, guys! Other topics in this episode: Steven’s history with movement How to recognize “Big Shoe” propaganda How Steven’s research background at Duke helped fuel Xero Shoes The lies we’ve been fed about our feet How watching a child run barefoot can give you better idea of how the body is supposed to work The truth about your arch The copycat nature of the athletic shoe industry Dr. Irene Davis and her contribution to barefoot running Balance and the elderly How tricking your brain can keep you young Steven and Lena’s Shark Tank experience with Mr.Wonderful Links & Resources: Steven’s Website Xero Shoes Steven on LinkedIn Steven on Twitter Xero Shoes on Instagram Dr. Irene Davis Barefoot Running by Michael Sandler The Brain That Changes Itself: Stories of Personal Triumph From The Frontiers of Brain Science Born to Run by Christopher McDougall Watch Steven and Lena on Shark Tank Netflix’ Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. Transcript of #29 Fatal Conveniences™: Bug Spray: Fight the Bite
We’re outnumbered, folks! The estimated number of insects to humans is 200 million to one. This is a battle we will most definitely lose. Yet, we try in vain. In this hive of insect activity, repellents can help you steer clear of nasty stings and bites. But is our reliance on bug sprays harming our health? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™ This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. In these segments, we get into society's Fatal Conveniences™. I define these as the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to. These things save us time and trick us into thinking they're actually good for us. But it's those same things that are breaking down our health and the health of the environment around us. I've spent most of my adult life obsessively researching these "conveniences." On every show, I pick one topic, and we dive into it. My goal is to make you more aware of these traps so that you can push back on them. Remember, it starts with you and the choices you make. So, if you're willing to look at your world from a different perspective and make little tweaks that amount to big changes, then this segment is for you. Mosquitos are a pest! Every year, a third of us will cover ourselves with almost five pounds of bug repellent to keep those blood-thirsty bugs at bay. Okay, so there is a good reason to do so. After all, there are many mosquito and tick-transmitted diseases to ward-off; West Nile virus, malaria, and Lyme Disease, to name a couple. So, I'm not here to tell you that protecting yourself from bites isn't important. But, if the repellent you're using can fend off mosquitoes, maybe what it's doing to you isn't so great either. In this Fatal Conveniences™, I break down the most common toxic chemicals that lurk in insect repellents, such as DEET (N, N-Diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), which is the granddaddy of them all. I also break down how these repellents affect children, and the simple things you can do today to keep insects away without sacrificing your health. Bugs, insects, Insecta or insectum- whatever you call our hexapod invertebrates, these creepy critters are vital for our ecosystems. So, finding non-harmful, preventative alternatives is crucial for the survival of not only us as a species, but also this incredible planet that we live on. Transcript of #28 Dr. Andrew Huberman on The Soothing Science Behind Breathwork
Do you want to reduce stress, get better sleep, experience less anxiety, and have more emotional control? More and more research is showing that deep breathing exercises can help. If you’re constantly feeling off-balance, using daily breathwork practices might be the answer. So, let's take a deep, cleansing breath and dive right into it. Dr. Andrew Huberman Tries to Find the Small Connecting Pieces to Life’s Biggest Puzzles Since he can remember, Andrew has had a fascination with animals and biology. In particular, their shapes, how they move, and their unique specializations. As a kid, he would read countless animal encyclopedias. He would try to figure out where we, as animals, fit into this world. Today, Andrew is an absolute powerhouse in neurological research. He is a neuroscientist and tenured professor in the Department of Neurobiology at Stanford University School of Medicine. He is the founder of the Huberman Lab, where he's involved in tons of breakthrough research on brain function, brain plasticity (the brain's ability to change as a result of experiences), and brain regeneration. In his life-long quest to relieve suffering, The Huberman Lab focuses a lot on the visual system. Dr. Huberman’s team is currently studying how virtual reality can get rid of fear and anxiety and preserve sight in glaucoma patients. In fact, these insane experiments resulted in Andrew diving with great white sharks and climbing mountains without ropes or harnesses- all in the name of science, of course. In addition, his work in the Huberman Lab at Stanford has been heavily featured in Science, Discover, Scientific American, Time, and the New York Times. In 2013, Andrew received the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Scholar Award and the Biomedical Scholar Award from the Pew Charitable Trusts due to his research. Then, in 2017, Andrew also won the ARVO Cogan Award. Primarily because of his contributions to vision science. In this episode, Andrew and I talk about why stress is actually good for your immune system. Also, we dive into the immense stress-relieving power behind breathwork and how your eyeballs are just another part of your brain. This totally fascinating episode gets right to the heart of proper breathing practices and how this simple act can positively impact your state of mind. Guys, this is not one to be missed! Transcript of #27 Fatal Conveniences™: Sunscreen: Counterproductive Chemicals
The sun is so incredibly vital to our health. When our skin is exposed to sunlight, it begins to manufacture its own vitamin D. Vitamin D production is crucial to many body functions like calcium absorption, maintaining healthy bones and boosting the immune system. So why are we slathering on chemicals to block the sun rays? Welcome to Fatal Conveniences™. This is a bite-sized segment that parallels The Darin Olien Show. Human beings need sunlight. I know many of you are probably thinking “But Darin, what about sunburn? What about skin cancer?” And those are valid concerns. I go into depth on both of these subjects in this segment. But my point is this: when you apply sunscreen to your skin, you are absorbing dangerous chemicals directly into your bloodstream. If cancer is what you’re trying to avoid, you’ll be sorely disappointed to learn that the very chemicals you think are protecting you are actually increasing your chances for many different kinds of cancer. In this segment, I identify the four common toxins found in most sunscreens. I explain what they do to your body and why you should avoid them at all costs. I also get into the delusion we’ve all been fed our entire lives about the sun being dangerous. We need the sun! Don’t get me wrong, we need to use common sense. If you have a history of skin cancer if your family, then by all means, look for ways to protect yourself. But using chemicals is not the answer. If you need to use sunscreen, I go over what to avoid and what to use instead. Other great info in this segment: The 4 main chemicals in most sunscreens and why they’re horrible for you The importance of Vitamin D A frightening study from the FDA Melanin explained What sun-bathing women in Sweden can tell us about the sun The magic of Nitric Oxide Healthy sunscreen brands that get my seal of approval Links & Resources: Is Sunscreen the New Margarine Avoidance of sun exposure as a risk factor for major causes of death FDA Sunscreen Report Raises Concerns Skin Cancer and Other Damage Getting Enough Vitamin D Sunscreen Should be Your Last Resort 12 Best Natural Sunscreens for Senstive Skin Sunscreen Glossary Netflix ‘Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” Be sure to check out The Darin Olien Show Episode #26 Matt Meruca on Letting the Sun Back Into Your Life for more great information on the importance of sunlight!

Transcript of 26. Matt Maruca on Letting the Sun Back in Your Life
Did you know that 92% of the average American’s life is spent indoors? If that doesn’t bum you out, I don’t know what will. We are creatures of light. The sun directly fuels us and gives us energy. When we actively work to block sunlight from our lives, it takes a toll on our health and well-being. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW. On this podcast, you’ll hear me, Darin Olien, “the superfood hunter,” have honest conversations with the extraordinary people that inspire me. I hope that through their knowledge and unique perspectives, they’ll inspire you, too. If you’re interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, this podcast is for you. Matt Muraca needed to figure out why he kept getting sick. In his teen years, Matt had digestion issues that would show up after every meal. On top of his gut problems, he also had countless allergies and debilitating headaches. Even at a young age, he knew there must be a way to resolve his health challenges with diet. After experimenting with the Paleo diet and researching like crazy, he felt better, but not as good as he knew he could. Today, Matt considers himself a student of the planet. His research has led him to focus on mitochondria. Matt describes mitochondria as “the little engines in our cells that keep us alive by burning our food with oxygen to make water and energy.” One of the most significant factors in how well our mitochondria are functioning is sunlight. The sun fuels our mitochondria, and as a direct result, it fuels us. Matt is a passionate messenger about the power of the sun and how badly we need it back in our lives. He also educates others on the dangers of blue light and its effects on our circadian rhythm. His company Ra Optics (Ra, as in the Sun God), creates fashionable glasses used to block out blue light from computers, phones and TV screens. In this episode, Matt and I get into some complicated scientific principles. Bear with us, guys, we definitely nerd out quite a bit. But I promise you, it’s worth it. We really need to understand how our bodies work, at the cell level. Once you understand the nitty-gritty details of mitochondria, you’ll want to provide them with the best fuel possible so that you can feel great every day. So, go outside, lay out in the sunshine, and enjoy. Other great tidbits in this episode: The story of Matt’s health issues Dr. Jack Kruse and his impact on Matt’s research The relationship between spirituality and light The science of the origin of life Genes and Nature vs. Nurture What happens when your mitochondria are damaged Alzheimer’s and the mitochondrial connection The Light Diet and Matt’s steps to utilize all its benefits Links & Resources: Matt’s Website Matt on Instagram Matt’s YouTube Channel Ra Optics - Use Promo Code: DARIN and get 10% off! Meanwhile, Ben’s quest for ultimate fitness and health never ends. As part of his pursuit of becoming the next real-life superman, he willingly tests and experiments biohacking techniques on his body. If you look at the results, it's insane. For instance, as he celebrated his 37th birthday, his biological age was sitting at an impressive 20. This is the tip of the iceberg when it comes to his accolades and achievements. In this conversation, we talk about how your current health habits could be harming future generations and the ways you can reverse it. Growing up in Yonkers, NY, he would spend hours reading books with his father about the science of nutrients. His healthy eating style gave him an edge as a teenage athlete. In 1976, he placed 3rd in the world for pairs figure skating. These unique credentials gave him authenticity while advising Olympic athletes on nutrition years later. Today, Dr. Fuhrman is a champion for the “Nutritarian Diet,” a phrase he coined himself. This health-driven way of eating focuses on a diet full of nutrient-dense whole foods. He’s a firm believer in the dangers of the standard American diet. Processed foods, sugars, and chemicals are slowly killing us, and the doctor has proof. Throughout his 35+ year career, he has seen the healing power of the Nutritarian Diet. Patients suffering from kidney failure, heart disease, morbid obesity, and even cancer- all healed by completely overhauling their eating habits. In this conversation, Dr.Fuhrman breaks down why nutrient-rich foods are essential for preventing disease. He gives us some frightening US health statistics that even I wasn’t aware of. We go over easy ways to add more plant-based meals into your diet, and why supplements are essential. His wealth of knowledge is unmatched in the nutrition world, and I’m so excited for you to hear what he has to say. Other amazing info in this episode: Dr. Fuhrman’s medical school experiences The secrets to health we’ve known all along Why we need to change our education system to include nutrition A breakdown of the Nutritarian Diet A sample day of eating healthy whole foods Scary American health statistics The simple principles the doctor teaches his patients GBOMBS and how to include them in your diet What it means to have a “hormonally favorable” diet What it means to eat clean The dangers of animal products Why you have to change your personality to eat healthy long term Links: Dr. Fuhrman’s WebsiteDr. Fuhrman’s Ted Talk Dr. Fuhrman’s Books Dr. Fuhrman on Instagram Eat to Live Retreat Attend an online virtual event with Dr. Fuhrman Netflix’ Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. Transcript of #17 Arthur Menard de Calenge on The Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields
It's not easy to get away from technology these days. It's the cell phones in our pockets, to the surrounding WiFi and Bluetooth. We can't just switch it all off and shut it down. As our homes fill with these electronic devices, we're also inviting in an unwanted guest—the hidden dangers of electromagnetic fields. WELCOME TO THE DARIN OLIEN SHOW, On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition, and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. Arthur Menard de Calenge is a problem solver. It all started with dinner. The guests sat around the table and took out their phones. One by one, they placed them face down on the table. Before long, the conversation turned to, "Surely holding a radiation-emitting device so close to you can't be good for your health?" At this party, Arthur's brain started ticking away, and he decided to do some research. So, what exactly was happening to his body if he kept his phone in his pants pocket all day? What he found blew his mind. Countless studies and peer reviews showing the potential harm that cell-phone electromagnetic fields (EMFs) could be having on your health. He saw words like "cancer," "cardiovascular disease," and even "reproductive issues." Arthur has always understood how important maintaining your health is if you want to live a long, disease-free life. But to stop using technology altogether? Sorry folks, that isn't an option. In a bid to protect the family jewels, he had to take matters into his own underpants. Today, Arthur is the co-founder of Lambs, a stylish protective apparel brand that you'll want to wear. Inspired by NASA's spacesuits, their coveted Faraday Line is a collection of comfortable T-shirts, beanies, and underpants that block wireless radiation. The super-soft, MET lab-tested cotton fabric is carefully interwoven with silver thread. Why is that great? Well, it blocks 99% of microwaves, like WiFi, Bluetooth, and cell phone radiation. It's also antibacterial. In 2019, Arthur's revolutionary endeavors won him the Forbes '30 under 30' title. But, he's not letting that get to his head. This "shy kid" is taking the world by storm. And Lambs is growing it's apparel range to also cater to women. Not only is Art a mastermind engineer, but for over ten years, he has been competing at the national level in Ski Racing and Karate. And, back in 2011, he was a French Collegiate Rowing Champion. In this episode, Arthur and I are tuning in on a different kind of wavelength. We unpack the truths behind EMFs and the things we can do to reduce our daily exposure. Arthur also takes us below the belt and talks about how Lambs products work and why they're effective. This guy is an innovative genius. You're not going to want to miss this one. Other Significant Bits To Get Stuck Into: How Lambs became a global phenomenon The scary reality behind our cell phones The unavoidable politics surrounding wireless radiation Taking a closer look at 5G How do electromagnets work? Transcript of #15 Dr. Pazio on How To Transform Your Health & Slow Down The Aging Process
What changes can we make to live a longer and healthier life? Sadly, so many mainstream medical systems deliver a reactive approach to healthcare, rather than a proactive one. Just imagine what we could all achieve if we stayed one step ahead of chronic disease and aging. But change is on the horizon. The secret to optimum health might just lie in medical engineering. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™- the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. Dr. Pazio is a healthcare pioneer. Alexander Paziotopoulos, (aka Dr. Pazio) is the CEO and Lead Physician at The Pazio Institute. He's also somewhat of a medical engineer. This guy is a highly sought-after specialist in anti-aging, regenerative, and functional medicine. His philosophy is one I'm sure we can all get on board with, which is to get all of us optimizing our health through personalized health care. That means taking care of the whole, even down to the smallest cell, to increase both the quality of life and longevity. Admittedly, Dr. Alex is like the Sherlock Holmes of health. He dedicates hours of his time to each patient that walks through his door. Both he and his team investigate and analyze precisely what health issues need addressing before creating individualized plans that utilize some of the planet’s latest advances in medical science and technology. But, it's not just about the physical healing here. Dr. Pazio checks the mental and emotional side too. I could literally talk to him all day. In this episode, we cover a lot of ground regarding all aspects of our health. We speak about the two anti-aging supplements we should all be taking, and why our guts love the smell of Autumn. We also explore stress and the cascade of health problems it can create. But don't worry, he also provides us with some stress-busting solutions. You're not going to want to miss this one. Other insightful stuff from my conversation with Dr. Pazio: Why physicians should become engineers How Dr. Pazio’s consultation process works What is Pelvic Stabilization, and why is it so important? How stress is slowly killing us Why you should psychically listen to your heart What’s your brain saying? Why you shouldn’t dismiss pharmaceuticals entirely Why both men and women need a healthy dose of testosterone The things you can do to help your internal ecosystem Why you need to tune in to your gut How supplements could change your life This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Sunglasses Links: The Pazio Institutue The Pazio Institute Instagram The Pazio Institute Facebook Heart Math Monitoring System Netflix ‘Down To Earth’ Official Trailer Download Darin’s amazing new lifestyle app and get 3 days free at 121Tribe.com Barukas Nuts 15% discount with code “DARIN” The Darin Olien Show is produced by the team at Must Amplify. Transcript of #14 Stephen Brooks on How We Can Live More Efficiently Together
Now more than ever, people are searching for a better way. A better way to live, a better way to eat, and a better way to help their fellow man. We’ve always known the answers, but we’ve somehow forgotten them along the way. We have to work together collectively to bring about a healthier planet for us all. Welcome to the Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. If you're interested in expanding your view of the world by learning new perspectives on health, nutrition and healing the planet, and want to learn more about society's Fatal Conveniences™, the things we may be doing because the world we live in makes us believe we have to, even though they may be doing harm- then this is the podcast for you. Stephen Brooks has so much to teach us all. And he’s still learning, too! You may remember Stephen Brooks from my Netflix show Down to Earth, which I co-host with Zac Efron. You’ll see Stephen on episode 3, where Zac and I traveled to Costa Rica to visit Punta Mona, one of the oldest and most bio-diverse permaculture education centers in Central America. What is permaculture, you ask? Well, there’s no better person on the planet to explain it to us than Stephen Brooks. Stephen grew up in Miami, Florida, and always felt a strong pull towards nature. He had over 600 gallons of fish tanks in his family home where he took care of jellyfish, lobsters, fish and sea creatures he didn’t even know the name of. It’s that same instinctual curiosity that led him to move to Costa Rica and discover a better way to live. Stephen firmly believes that we must treat the Earth as an extension of our own bodies. If we treat it well, it will provide us with everything we need to live a happy, full life. Permaculture expands on that belief, by stressing the importance of comradery with our neighbors. We must work together in order to thrive. In this episode, Stephen and I have such a fun and enthusiastic conversation about everything he’s working towards in Costa Rica. His passion is infectious, and together we explore how you can take more of a vested interest in where your food comes from and why that is so vitally important. So take a little time and listen to my boy Stephen explain the magic of permaculture and how you can incorporate a bit of it into your life. Things You Don’t Want to Miss in This Episode: How it all started with a Grateful Dead concert Stephen’s “aha moment” while living in Spain Wisdom from Stephen’s late friend How we vote with our wallet What is Permaculture? Transcript of #13 Kenny Chesney on Finding Balance Between the Extremes
Performing night after night to sold-out arenas, pouring your heart out into every song, and drawing energy from the crowd must be an intoxicating feeling. But then after months of touring, it's over. How do you find balance between the extremes? Welcome to the Darin Olien Show. On this podcast, you'll hear me, Darin Olien, "the superfood hunter," have inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same- to save the planet one conversation at a time. Kenny Chesney is a country music megastar. And he’s also a good friend of mine. Kenny and I work out together and hang out together. He’s just a real, genuine, sweet guy. In 1997, Kenny had his first #1 Billboard hit with “She’s Got It All,” off his album I Will Stand. Even before that, he’s been selling out arenas all over the world and continues to do so. Standing in front of a 60,000+ crowd is a feeling Kenny struggles to describe. But it’s thrilling. He loves it. He thrives on it. He draws energy and magic from the crowd, and it gives him life. But then the tour is over, and he’s just a guy. That transition has proven to be extremely emotionally draining for Kenny. And he struggles to strike a balance between the extreme high of performing, and the silence of the time between touring. Kenny and I get into some deep stuff. I might not be able to relate to singing in front of massive crowds screaming my name. Still, I think we all can relate to feeling imbalanced when our work and personal lives are so different. In this conversation, which was recorded pre-pandemic, I share some tips and tricks to finding balance in a chaotic life. We also discuss Kenny’s eating habits, which aren’t always the best, but certainly entertaining. And he gives us some dirt on what it’s like to work with Ed Sheeran. You’re not going to want to miss this one, that’s for sure. Other great stuff in my chat with Kenny: How Kenny prepares his body for a tour The mistakes he sees other artists make What Kenny’s downtime looks like Why he struggles with balance Why fame doesn’t feed your soul How seeing Bruce Springsteen play live changed him The love/hate relationship Kenny has with ice baths The melodic genius of Ed Sheeran How 4th Period Geography class in high school ruined Kenny’s eating habits This episode’s Fatal Conveniences™ topic: Shampoo Links: KennyChesney.com (Look for rescheduled tour dates here) Kenny on Twitter Kenny on Instagram Kenny on Facebook Listen to Kenny’s song “Tip of My Tongue” co-written by Ed Sheeran SafeCosmetics.com Chemicals in Shampoo May Pose Health Concerns What are Parabens? Transcript of #12 Carlos Tanner on Going Beyond Your Sensory Spectrum- Saved by Psychedelics
There are parts of us all that could use a little healing. But if you're in a self-destructive cycle, harnessing the power of nature could be the medicine that saves you. Let's talk plant-medicine and psychedelics. In this episode, we're going well beyond the fringes of our perceived reality with a new buddy of mine, Carlos Tanner. Carlos was living the ideal, all American dream. He had a beautiful house, a nice car, the perfect job. But what many people didn't see was his deep dissatisfaction with life, and a spiraling heroin addiction. It wasn't until he had a near-death experience involving his car and the Manhan River, that his life took a dramatic turn. Today, Carlos is the founder of the Ayahuasca Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Iquitos, Peru. This research center offers healing retreats and in-depth educational courses. They continuously strive to understand the plant-based healing practices used by indigenous healers of the Peruvian Amazon. For anyone who has tuned in to the "Down To Earth" series on Netflix, (hosted by the affable Zac Efron and yours truly), you'll probably recognize Carlos from the last episode of the first season. We experienced some of his magical, plant-based healing practices first hand. Carlos has participated in over 700 ayahuasca ceremonies. He regularly speaks about his experiences with Ayahuasca and his path to becoming a shaman. In this episode, my eyes have truly been opened. Carlos tells us his insane back story, and how he landed his ultimate job working with one of the world's most sacred medicinal plants. We dive into his trippy, yet visceral experience during his first Ayahuasca ceremony, and the epic work the Ayahuasca Foundation is now doing for medicinal plant research and the planet. Other Highlights From This Episode Where Carlos’ love of medicinal plants began What it was really like to have the “dream job.” The near-death experience that put Carlos on a different path The first Ayahuasca experience- from vomit to sombreros What is Ayahuasca? There are some people on this planet that are born with a rare gift, and I think my buddy Rory Cordial falls nicely into that category. Coming from a family chock full of healers, it was only natural that Rory would also take the reins and become a physical therapist. As an artist in his own right, Rory’s rare healing and intuitive touch means he is highly sought-after. He’s spent many years travelling the world, working with the crème de la crème of this planet’s talent- I’m talking Oscar and Grammy winning entertainers and top performing, gold medal winning athletes here. Rory is also the host of The Optimal Performance Guide Podcast, a show that presents his mind-bending conversations with high level humans, while also giving the guidance people need in order to adjust their mindsets and habits to hit optimal health performance. In this episode, Rory and I are in a healing mood. We talk about his Physical Therapist father, and how he’s mentored Rory to become the pragmatically minded, miracle healer he is today. We also explore some of the aspects of health that everyone should consider adjusting, and the simple techniques we can all apply in our lives to become a little bit happier and way more healthier. Other Bits From Our Conversation: Growing up in a healthy environment Going beyond the five senses How Rory apts into his physical and mental state Why meditation is better than cramming last minute for an exam Why there is so much power in being subtle- especially when it comes to muscles How gratitude can help you heal What Rory thinks is the key to a healthy life Why we should all map out a clear direction when it comes to our physical health Why you need to commit, commit, commit! In the Darin Olien Show, each episode is packed with honest, inspiring and enlightening conversations with extraordinary people from all walks of life. Although our ideas and approaches to life may differ, our ultimate goal is the same - to save the planet one conversation at a time. We’ll talk about how to fuel your body, boost your immune system and even sustain yourself on a plant-based lifestyle. We present tangible tips, tricks and methods to get you feeling your best and living your best life. My mission is to stop you from falling into society’s fatal conveniences- the things we do that we’re indoctrinated into thinking we have to, even though those very things are negatively affecting us, and in some cases, slowly destroying and killing us.
