The UK will probably have a general election sometime this year, but we still don't know when. So why not? An election is called when the Prime Minister asks the King to dissolve Parliament, which basically means ending the current term of Parliament. This has to happen at least every five years, but sometimes it happens sooner. All MPs then lose their status and have to campaign to be re-elected. From the date Parliament is dissolved, it's then 25 working days till the general election. So it's basically up to the UK Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, when we have the next election. The latest day Parliament can be dissolved is on the fifth anniversary of the day it first met. So this year, that would be the 17th of December. That means the latest possible date for a vote would be the 28th of January, 2025. But Mr Sunak said he will dissolve Parliament earlier than that, and that there will be a vote this year. Some experts say that means it could be in November, but it really can happen anytime.
