Transcript of BISPING'S BYM Podcast: UFC 306 Preview Ft. Demetrious Johnson, Renato Laranja & Adrian Yanez
Michael Bisping PodcastConceive, believe, achieve. Shut the fk up. You're listening to believe you me with Michael the Count Bisbing.
You know my name yet? And Anthony Lionhardt-Smith.
The producer said, Everyone looking at everyone. So I just turned the eye round. Anyway, whatever. We're not here to talk about that. Welcome to the show, everybody. As always, we've got a stacked show for you. Today, we are joined by the one and only, the recently retired, one of the greatest fighters the sport has ever seen. Of course, I'm talking about the one and only, Demetrius Mighty Mouse Johnson. He'll be joining us in about 12 minutes. We've also then got the hilarious Hinata Laranja. If you don't know who Hinata Laranja is, you're in for a treat. He is hilarious. One of the funniest human beings I've ever spoke to, a 27-time world jiu-jitsu champion. And then at the end of the show, we're going to be joined by... Well, we had to bring him on, Adrian Yanez. He's a great fighter, but he's also Mexican, okay? Yeah, Adrian Yanez is how you actually pronounce this. You're not Harrington. That was not Mexican. I don't know what that accent was. So we got a great show for you. We're going to go through all the fights, and Adrian is going to talk about the relevance of the Mexican Independence Day, and we're going to make some pics, and we're going to have fun, all that type of shit.
But until Demetrius joins us, it's just me and Harrington. Harrington, you have said, No, Jay. I see you behind you. How are you, buddy?
Good, man. While you're waiting for Mighty Mouse, you have big as a house. So sorry about that.
Are you getting bigger?
Yeah. Oh, my God. It's really out of control. 300 before 200.
What's going on?
There's a chance I might lose this bet. There was a time where I was 2:15, right? And I was golden, and I was like, Oh, I'm going to collect from Brian. It's going to be no problem. Now I'm knocking on the door again.
Dude, I did the three-day water fast that I bored everyone to death with last week. Bone broth I got down to 2:12 this morning, and I got on the scale, 2:24. I'm like, Right, we're doing it again, babe. Sunday, we're on it because I got a meeting with a movie producer next week about a lead role. I'm like, Shit, I got to slim down. I got to get it going. Anyway, enough about that. You're not here to hear about our roles on the weight scale. No. Mma news, what have we got real quick, Harrington? We got a couple of breaking fight announcements.
Yeah, so we got We got two big fights for MSG in November, and then the first fight booking I've seen, at least, for 2025. Which one do you want to go to first, November or the far away one? The legend fight.
What is the legend fight? What are the fights? I'll tell you which one I want to talk about.
We got Tony Ferguson versus nick Dias. That's looking like January of next year. Then we have MVP versus Carlos Prates for MSG. Then there was one other fight booked, and I'm trying to remember it.
Jesus, Louise, have I got to do a job for you? He's on the tip of my tongue. Bo Nickel versus Paul Krieg. Three great fights. So is the Tony Ferguson versus nick Diaz? Is that locked in? Because I remember at the time, there was a lot of people on Twitter and stuff saying, when Michael Quiesa was booked to face Tony Ferguson, and nick Dias was booked to face Vicente Luque, people were like, Well, hold on. Why doesn't Ferguson just fight nick Dias? Is this locked in? Is this come from official sources?
No, none of these three fights have come from official sources. It's either come from random Twitter accounts that reputable sources have picked up and seem to have sourced, and then some come from, apparently, from people's management.
Okay. Well, the thing is, Tony Ferguson did the whole, I'm not leaving bit from Wolf of Wall Street. And if he wants to stick around and he wants to have one more, and we all want to watch him because, listen, I hate to say it, it's not car crash TV, but it's like, God, as a guy that's past his best, if he is going to do it, and if the UFC do give him one more fight, then nick Diaz is a perfect match. They're both legends of the sport. They've both been around forever. People love nick Dias, an OG, a pioneer of the sport. If they're going to let them have one more fight, a swan song, if you will, it is the perfect matchup. So fair play to both of them. And if it happens, best of luck to both of them. And as I say, in terms of matchups, if they're going to do it, it's perfect. What was the other one? Oh, Bo Nickel, Paul Craig. We're going to get Paul Craig on to talk to him. We're going to get Boe Nicke on to talk to him. He could tell us all about his meditation and presence of mind and how he's manifested this and how it takes nothing for granted.
I don't know why I'm joking like that. Boe Nicke is awesome. But don't take it for granted that Boe Nicke wins this fight. This is a really interesting match up because Boe Nicke is going to out-wrestle him all day long. That's not a question. But if it Well, when it hits the ground, Paul Craig is a tricky a bitch down there, man. Submission over Jamal Hill, the only victory over Magomed Ancalyev. Very, very, very tricky guard on the feet. Who knows? Could go either way. Don't think they will have too much time on the feet. He knocked out Val Woodburn, and that looked phenomenal. But Val Woodburn was like three hours notice, standing there, a massive event, international fight week, but he like, Oh, like a deer in the headlights. You know what I mean? So Bo Nickel went to town on him. And then finally, MVP returning. Pretty quick turnaround. That's good to see. Mvp just lost to Ian Gary, taking on Carlos Prattis, who just wipe the floor with Li Jingliang. Excited matchup as well.
Yeah, I'm really excited for all these fights. I think, honestly, Nickel versus Craig might be... It was on the tip of my tongue. I think that might be the one I'm most excited for, especially Paul Craig I mean, he's been pulling guard in his last three or four fights. It's been to a point where he's trying to drag people to the ground with him. If Bo Nickel is going to put him there, come on, man, let's see how this goes.
He hasn't been pulling guard for the last three or four fights. He always pulls guard. That's just his style. That's what he does. I'm working on this today, so my headkecks are getting smooth. He just wants to drag people down to the ground. So yeah, I was a little surprised, and I don't mean this in a disrespectful way, the MVP took that fire because Carlos Prattis, yeah, he had a big win. I think it's now four wins in a row, all stoppages. Looks beautiful against Li Jingliang, but not exactly the name brand that I thought MVP wants to go after. I know there was talks about maybe a Leon Edwards. Maybe Leon doesn't want to return just yet, maybe he wants to take some time away and figure it out. Just take some time away from the pressure of being the champion, losing the belt, and then just Just decompress and forget about mixed martial arts for six months or so. And that's not a bad idea. I think he's only 32 years old. But as a fan, I would have liked to have seen MVP versus Leon Edwards. But MVP, I ain't got time to waste.
If he's the name Carlos Pratas that they throw at him, why not? Respect to MVP, respect to Carlos Pratas, I think we'll see a great fight.
I think that Leon Edwards fight is going to be there for him one way or another. People just want to know who the best striker in England is. I feel like that's natural for any fan of the sport. That fight is going to happen at some point, but I'm super excited, especially for MVP at the Garden. How fun does that sound?
At the Garden as well. I forgot about that. Are you going to be there? I'm going to be there, I hope. I think so. Tom Aspinal is going to be there. I almost said Tom Jones. I do it all the time. I always said Tom Jones. John Jones, Steepay, Tom going to be there. A lot of drama to unfold. Dana White We also said, While we wait for Demetrius' Mighty Mouse Johnson, he's not late. We're just ripping through these topics. Dana White says, There will be no interim title at £155, and Islam will return once he is ready. He said, Islam's fought so many times, but he's always willing to jump up and take a fight. So no, there won't be an interim title. When he's ready to go, we'll go. We have plans. We're looking at it right now on when he would fight. So I understand what's his face, Alvin Saurukian, Closing the idea of an interim strap, I don't think there's a need for that. Dana's right. He has fought regularly. He has been a dependable champion. And then on top of that, the interim champs. Look at the mess they've got at heavyweight right now.
I know all the commotion and kerfuffle. And I think that was Mighty Mouse joining us for just a second.
Yeah, he's getting this stuff together.
Yeah, it's okay. So the problem is we're doing an interim belt unless it's absolutely necessary. Speaker I was thinking of Dana, there was a little bit where he was doing an Instagram Live, and everyone's just like, Are you oiling up John Jones and stuff? It's hilarious. This oiling up business.
He's been getting the worst of it, but dude, he keeps showing up. He keeps going live. He keeps doing the thing. No, he does. It's not getting to him. Keep it up, I guess.
Why would it get to him? I mean, come on. Anyway, Hamilton, get the hell out of here. Go away. Get out of here. I don't want to speak to him, and I can speak to you. The one and only, the recently retired, one of the greatest fighters the planet has ever seen, the one, the only, Demetrius Mighty Mouse Johnson. My man, how are you doing?
I'm good, man. I'm good. Thanks for having me on, Michael.
Come on, come on. We don't need to be all nervous, Demetrius.
I'm not fucking nervous. We did that for UC1v2. Coldplay was a great time. I'll never forget it. It's one of my favorite memories. One of my favorite memories of my career.
Yellow and blue. What's that sound?
I don't fucking know.
It's all yellow. First off, congratulations, man. The retirement, right? As soon as I saw that, I'm like, We got to talk. Demetrius, when did you make your MMA debut?
Holy shit, Michael. I think 2006. It was an amateur fight at one of the local malls here in Washington State. So it did that and kept on fighting. Matt Hume was very really good about making me well-rounded. So I would do mixed martial arts, now I do kickboxing, back to MMA, Muay Thai, back to mixed martial arts, boxing, et cetera, et cetera. And then finally, I went pro.
Yeah. So 18 years basically involved with this sport at the highest level. Go on. How many times did you defend the UFC belt?
I think 11 times.
Just a cheeky 11, 12 Championship fights, victorious in every single one. It's unbelievable. And not only that, we'll get into some conversation in a second, but the way that you did it, the people that you beat along the way, the creativity, the originality in some of the moves, when you picked up that guy and then jumped to the arm bar, I don't need to tell you, you know what I'm talking about. Unbelievable. And then the whole time, we were talking about this on Monday, never any controversy, always an example to young, aspiring martial artist. So I just honestly, so much respect, DJ. Congratulations on everything.
Thanks, man. Yeah, it's been an amazing career 11 consecutive title offenses, never had a problem in USADA, passed on my drug test, never been in trouble in general. Kind of like that blue collar athlete, come home, take your wife and kids, go to the gym, clock in the hours, go to the fight week, do all the media obligations, and show up in a fight, and go home. I'm grateful. There's been times there's so many athletes who come in my sport who have achieved what I have, and they might have a little speed bump in the road. But for me, I can pat myself on the back that it's all been a clean bill of health.
Of course. And I saw your retirement speech. Great, great words, by the way. And I'm not just saying this because my wife's in the other side of the room right now. I'm not saying this because she's here. When you have a significant other, a partner, a wife, a support system like that throughout the entire journey like you did. And I know you were thanking her on the microphone and you started to break a little bit. You got a little bit emotional. But I fully understand I understand that.
Yeah, because your wife's been in... I've seen your wife be part of your career your whole entire life. When you got in the ultimately fight, you guys have kids now. She's probably been there. She was there when you got knocked out and you had your eye surgery. She's been with you just like my wife, she's been with me since my second amateur fight. Eighteen, 19 years old, all the way to 38. We've had children. There's times where she'll give birth to Tyrant, my oldest, and then a week later, I'm fighting. I'm headlighting the UFC. And then when I gave birth to Maverick, she gave birth to Maverick, I'm headlighting- It's 2024.
Anything's possible, but are you- No, no, no, no, no, Earth, ladies and gentlemen.
Don't let the media lie to you.
Breaking news? No, seriously, man. And the sport has changed so much since then. I mean, let's remember, back in the day, they abolished the Flyweight division.
Yeah.
Does it feel like right now, you're such a recognizable name. This weekend is UFC 306, and it's a Bantamweight, Sean O'Malley. That's one of the biggest stars in the division that's at the top of the bill. What's your opinions on that?
I think it's great. I think, like you said, look how far the sport has come. When I got into mixed martial arts, they had 155, which was headlined by... Not headlined, but one of the champions or one of the big figures was Sean Shirk. And then eventually, they got rid of 155, and they made 17. It was the lightest weight class the UFC had. Obviously, over in Japan, you had Shuto where they had the lighter weight classes. But That wasn't that long ago. In 1993, that's when UFC was around. Now, fast forward to 2024, we have the UFC headline The Sphere with Benoît guys, Shauna Mali, taking on Marab. I think Shauna Mali and Marab, Shauna Mali is probably one of the biggest names in the sport of mixed martial arts right now, along with Marab. Marab is still trying to make his name. He is a household name, but he's not as a big star as Sean Mallet. I'm just super excited for these guys to have this opportunity to fight get this monumental card.

Throughout your epic career, You fought all over America, out in Asia as well. What's the one memory of one of the greatest nights of your career? For me, obviously, I think about when I won the belt. I didn't do that 11 times, and we see a few of them in the background. When I got inducted in the Hall of Fame, when I defended in Manchester, pretty much my hometown, these are the obvious ones. What are the ones for you that spring to mind?
Man, that's so hard. I think I've always enjoyed fighting in Vegas, and I think some of my favorite memories are probably getting the phone call from Matt that the UFC wants me to come fight in Las Vegas. I got to leave. I jump on the phone. I go next door, talk to my... Not next door, but I go into the office where I used to work, talk to my boss, people, Hockey. He was like, Yeah, I got to see if I give you time off. Getting the time off, then they go into Las Vegas for a week, training, cut away, and then going back to work on Monday. The reason why I say that is because it was like a dream. It's like, here I am at work, making it to 76 an hour. And next year, they're like, Oh, you want to come to Vegas to fight? I'm like, Yeah, let's make it happen. I call the wife, Hey, we're going to go to Vegas to fight for a week. It's going to be amazing. And then me, her get our flights. And I think that's a time that I always hold dear to my heart.
I love that answer because it's those times when you really appreciate the opportunity at your fingertips. It's fresh, it's exciting. I always do these Q&A's when I'm on flights and stuff. And the other day somebody said, What do you miss the most? And I said, I miss that adrenaline of when you get the phone call and then you speak to your coaches and then you develop a plan and a strategy for the fight and then going through it all. All of it, it's all the buzz that I miss. Do you miss Do you think you're going to miss this DJ? Are we going to see DJ coming back in a year or two?
Missing boxing, taking on an influencer. God, no. There was a point in time where I was like, I think I want to box. I think I want to give boxing a go. But there's a part of me, I was like, For what? What's there to gain? What is there to achieve? I don't want to hit in the head anymore. Don't want to develop any CTE concussions. Don't want to do a training camp, just pure boxing. When it comes to game planning and strategizing, I'm going to get that in Brazil Jujutsu, which I could do that until I'm 65, 70 years old, hopefully, if I'm healthy enough. No, I won't be coming back to fight at all in any combat sports where it's boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai or mixed martial arts. I am going to do jiu-jitsu because I'm 38 years old. You see all these guys from Misfits, Influence of boxing. They're all trying to fight older fighters. Hence, Jake Paul, he's about to fight Mike Tyson. He also fought Tewood. He also fought Ben Ascren. There's so many other guys out there that these guys can fight. Why do you guys fight real boxers?
I was trying to make their name in this sport, too. So that's just my personal opinion, but no, I think I'm going to get my itch scratch from jiu-jitsu.
Yeah, no, I saw you competing recently, and I wasn't there. But then the video went viral where you go over the guy's upset, and you go over and you give him the nicest pep talk. I mean, that's what makes you who you are, DJ. So congratulations. Never change. You have UFC Hall of Fame. You must have saw this clip. Dana was like, Yeah, without a shadow of a doubt. Let me ask you, do you want to be in the Hall of Fame?
Absolutely. Here's the thing, UFC is such a huge part of my career. We can't just swipe it under the rug. What Happened, happened. 11 second title defense is the first ever flyweight champion. I've done some amazing things inside the octagon. Did I ever sell over 600,000 pay-per-views? No, I That's okay. My job was to go out there, put on amazing performances, be creative, and win. And that's what I did. So I'm excited to get inducted into the Hall of Fame of the UFC, and I can't wait to see how they go about doing that.
Yeah, it's only right. It wouldn't be right, would it? Because it's undeniable, the mark that you left, the belts that you won. You got all the belts as well, didn't you? All 11?
No, I didn't. Like I said, the story goes, I was doing that photoshoot, that famous picture I took, and I had all belts with me in New York, and I was with myself, and I couldn't ship it back home. So they shipped it back to the UFC warehouse, and that's the last time I heard of it.
Oh, shit.
I know. Well, why don't you get on the phone? I don't know. I haven't talked to Dana. I don't know how long, dude.
It's been a long- You don't have to call Dana. Call somebody, get your manager, get somebody that's like, Yo, bro, they were his belts. They never made it back to the house. If we had those 11 and all of the belts behind you, how many belts in total would DJ?
So 12, and then three. So 15. My dad has two. I sent two down with him. I had so many in the closet. I was like, I'll send two with you, dad. You keep it in your bar when I come down to shoot my Mighty Cass down there. So I think I have 15 belts.
Wow. I mean, I've got two, and I'm like, I'm I'm like, You're giving two away. You're like, Yeah, that's what they do. Dude, unbelievable. Listen, I want to ask you about this, and we will talk about the sphere, but I feel like This is only fair that I do this. I don't know if you saw, we had President Olson from Karate Combatt on recently.
I've seen.
Yeah, great guy. I don't know anything about the situation. And he came on here and he's declaring war on for One FC and all the rest of it. And he had some things to say. As you were a fighter and a representative, I guess, for One FC, if you saw that, do you want to counter? I'm not trying to get you to talk beef or get involved or anything like that. But if you saw that, what were your experiences at one?
I've only heard wind of what was Hazim talking about. And honestly, everybody has their own experiences at One Championship. My experience have always been absolutely amazing talking to not just Chacha, but the competition team. And each time I showed up to my fights in what chipship when it was in Japan, America, and Denver, even recently, I went to Denver, it's always been professional, and I've always been a professional as well. And so I'm I'm not too sure about all the context of the beat that Hazim has for one championship. But if you ask me, Man, how was your relationship with the UFC? I'm like, Well, the pudding's on the wall, I guess you say. It's in the sauce. But if you ask Jon Jones, the same thing. Jon Jones goes, Oh, man, me, Dana always been good. Dana's always been. You know what I mean? I think that everybody's situation is going to be totally different with the organization.
Yeah, and that makes total sense. And as I said, I wasn't trying to put you in it. I thought it's only fair. It's only fair. I had him on and he had things to say and seeing as I can see the one belt in the background, I thought... Anyway, UFC 306, what do you think about this one? What do you think about the whole production, $20 million dollars being spent? And it's going to be unreal. I don't know if you know this, they're doing a movie between every card, and then the world around the sphere is going to slowly change, and by the end of the fight, it's going to look different, and then the movies are going to play in between. I think it's going to be unforgettable.
Yeah, I hope it's dope. I don't want to be a long-ass night. I got to work, so I was thinking, God damn.
I'm going to hurry up in these movies.
Yeah, right? I'm super excited for the athletes to get to opportunity. Let's start there. A Benoît title fight, head of line in this card. Do you have the co-made event with Alexa taking on Valtiv Shefchev. It's your third time to get in after. You have Dago Lopez taking on Brian Ortega. Those are the three main fights I'm looking forward to. I think it's going to be sick. I can't wait to see how the sphere is going to look. Obviously, being there alive is going to be absolutely amazing. But how it's going to be viewed from the television.
Yeah, well, that was the thing. That's why they brought in these fancy pants, Emmy Award-winning directors to try and ensure that the viewing experience that the people in the sphere get, that the people at home get it. So I'm intrigued. I'm just going off what I've seen online. I know nothing else about it. It's all very, very secret, top secret, confidential information. Sean O'Malley, Marabdi Valishvili. What do you think? Who wins that fight?
God, it's such a hard one. I have a thing going on between me and Balal. And the biggest thing- What's going on with Balal? Oh, Balal Now, Hobbit, we have a little wager going on to see who's picked because he came out and said, Oh, you're in us to suck. And so we have a little thing going on right now. That's right. So he went with Sean. I'm going to keep it true to code. I want to say across the board. He went with Shauna Mali because it was his pick. I went with Marab because that was his pick he got to pick. I think it's going to be a very interesting fight. I think we're going to sit back and see how does Marab deal with the feints, the footwork, the speed, and the movement of Shauna Mali. Marab is going to have to take a little bit damaged in order to get across the void to get his hands on Shauna Mali. We all know what Shana Mali is going to do. We can expect Shana Mali is going to move, do his feints, push kicks, right-hand, jab, land in that lead knee because he is a shorter fighter.
But the biggest, I would say, X-Factor in the fight is, can Marab would stand that? If he could stand that, get his hands. Excuse me, that was what I was going to say. We are damn sure that we're not going to see Shana Mollet do a double take takedown. He's not going to go out there and do a fucking double. He's going to be moving, looking in the strike, and I think Marab is going to be able to get to him. I went with Marab on that because I... Not that I had to, but I had to, but I just feel that any one of these guys can win that fight. I like Marab. I like Sean. We're all kosher. You know how it is in this game? If I pick one or the other, you hate me, but I'm super excited. May the best man win.
May the best man win, of course. I'll give you my take in a second. But Balal, we got a little worked up. He said that your analysis sucks. I picked Bilal to lose to Leon Edwards.
I did, too. I told him, I told him, I was like, dog, am I going to lie to you? I was like, I thought Leon Edwards was going to whip your ass. I thought he was going to piece you up. And he goes, well, you picked wrong, money. You picked wrong. I was like, hey, I was wrong on that one, but I'm not apologizing.
Yeah, well, I didn't apologize either. I had him on the show on Monday, and I was like, I'll just be honest. And he probably saw it because every dickhead on Twitter was tagging him in a video of me saying, I think, but Leon is going to win this. He He was crazy. We're all going to forget the name. He was big enough to come on. So I told him, I said, Hey, you proved me wrong along with a lot of other people that you proved wrong. But it's weird, fighters, they do get so touchy on that, don't they?
Yes, they do. I understand. I was there once, and then I stopped caring. I was like, Yeah, this person is looking at my skillset and what this person could do to me and what I could do to him. I think that he's going to have a better chance to beat me. Hey, my job is to go out there and prove you're wrong. I'm not claiming that I have a crystal ball and I can know how every fight is going to turn out. If somebody out there in the world does, please let me know because we can make a lot of money together at the casinos in Las Vegas. But it's a fight. You're giving your predictions of what you think is going to happen. I didn't factor in that Balal was going to walk down Leon Edwards. It's just like this fight with the sugar Sean O'Malley taking on Marab. Everybody's factoring in that Sean's going to be able to be on his bike and move around, throw the feints, be too much on his feet. But let's say Marab, because we've seen Sean O'Malley getting in trouble before. When you watch him fight Peter Jan, Peter Jan was able to get across the distance and use his wrestling.
We've also seen, I forget the gentleman's name who fought Sean O'Malley, who was able to get across the distance and get some wrestling, and Sean, his legs get hurt. But we also see Sean knock people out when they try to get there, aka Roger McStern. He overextend it. We've never seen somebody outwork Marab. That's one thing we have never seen before. We've never seen somebody go in there and just manhandle Marab. I'm not saying Sean Amali has to manhandle Marab, but But we haven't seen that yet. We know Marab is going to go in there and try to work his ass off to get the W. That is why this fight is so exciting because I can't wait to see who's going to implement their gameplay and execute flawlessly.
That is a perfect comparison, though. I love that Balal versus Leon because you can make the exact same arguments on both sides. Nobody's going to outwork Marab. The man's pace is ridiculous. He's phenomenal. He's a great wrestler, all the rest of it. But I I'm going to go head to head with you, DJ. Okay. And we'll make it bet. I don't care. Okay, here we go. The space can be high. I've got Sean O'Malley. I love Marab. I think Sean O'Malley, as you said, I think their knees up the middle, just like he landed on Cheeto, that's going to be key. The feints, the movement, and all the rest of it. However, for Marab to win, which is definitely possible, as you say, he's going to have to eat some shots. And it's not like... Because Sean does have knockouts, and the one against Al Jamain is the one that everybody thinks of. I think that's part Totally not taken away from Sean because of the weight cuts. Marab is not going to have a crazy weight because he's not oversize for the division. So it's going to be really, really tough. But I think Sean can get it done eventually.
But what can the consequences be? Hamilton or Brian, do we have any ideas? If you're wrong and I'm right- Oh, God. And you're wrong- Oh, God.
If I'm wrong, I'll come on your podcast and I'll eat shit, okay?
Or what can we do? What can we do? I don't know. We'll come up We'll come up with something. We'll come up with something.
Okay, well, I got to pay a man's debt first. Once I take care of Allah, if he's right, then I got to take care. I got to do it here that if you're right, then I'll figure something else. I don't know, right? Can't be going around here making all these goddamn bets on Tom, Peter, and Harry. I'm a man of my word, right? So it's going to be interesting to fight. When I look at that, I actually got a chance to train with Aljomere Sterling, and he is a massive body. I don't know how he made it to 135. But his grapple is so damn good that if he was able to get O'Malley down, I don't think O'Malley would have got back up. That's how I feel good. I mean, and am I saying O'Malley's grapple isn't bad? It's just that is what Alja may certainly specialize in. And even O'Malley came out and said, he goes, I'm not letting that guy take me down. I can't let him on my back. And they're actually feeling it when I went to Vegas to train with Alja. I was like, Yep, what I thought was TV is exactly what I felt.
So I haven't got the chance to train with Rob. I haven't trained with Sean O'Malley, but I'm super excited for this fight.
Okay, well, that's that. Let's get back to you. So legendary fight career in the can, done that, 38 years old, and I'm still trying to figure this out. Obviously, I'm very busy and I've got a lot of other endeavors going on, but I'm still waiting for the big thing. And my wife's always like, What are you talking about? I need something else to excite me to like... I love the commentary. I do the podcast and all the rest of it, and I love that. I'm busy, and financially, I'm very secure. But I need something for me, for my soul, for that competitive spirit, for that urge. I've got to scratch it. You know what I mean? What do you think the future holds for you?
I think it's jiu-jitsu. Like you said, I'm extremely busy as well. I had a 45-minute conference call before I had a 30-minute break. I jumped on here with you after that. I got to take the kids to do all that stuff. Got a lot of stuff going on a pipeline. Got the Mighty Cass, got the YouTube channel, got all that stuff. Then, yes, you're right, there is going to be something that scratches that like, Oh, God, I'm nervous. My heart's poppitating. What are we going to be doing? That's jiu-jitsu. I'm looking to compete more in a gi, potentially no gi. But the hardest thing I'm having a hard time finding is just time to train. I haven't had time to train at all. Usually, when I compete, it's always those big tournaments where it's either Master World, Pans, Euros, Brazilio, or National Americans. It's always the big tournament. I'm not going down to your local tournament just fighting Joe and Betty from down the street. It's always the big tournament. That's It gets me excited. And hopefully, one day, you can find the same thing on. See what? You don't do any juju, you can do it.
Well, bro, I'm recovering from neck surgery. I just had a disk replacement two weeks ago. So I can't do it. I shouldn't even be sitting here talking to you. I certainly shouldn't have done 45 minutes on the Peloton in a very lightweight session. But the man's a beast. What can I tell you? What about commentary for one FC?
You know what? I've done a little bit of it, but you have to toe the right line when it comes to commentating. You got the sponsors in your ear. You got to make sure it flows very nicely, as you know that, right? When I can still reach as many people, not as much as one Championship or UFC, but when I can do my own commentary, right? 10 feet from here and they go live to my fans directly, there's something about it. I don't have to. I can say whatever I want, however I want, react however I want. I'm in control of my own broadcasting or my own Of course. Right? So maybe one day I just did it with Hager D. Superlake. It was fun. I enjoyed it, but I think I need a little more work to be able to smooth in there with Rich Franklin, Mich Chilson, and the rest of the voice for One Championship.
Yeah, it does take a little bit of practice, shall we say. That's why I started off on the desk in the pre and post show, and you slowly get used to it and all the rest of it. But you're right as well. I do my own stuff from home, and it is more fun for one. You can swear it. You can say you can really go out of town if someone's being terrible. But I do that anyway. So if I'm commentating, I try and be very honest. If this guy's not performing, if the technique is bad, if the takedown was terrible or whatever, I'm going to be honest. I can't lie. You can't polish a turd. Yeah. You have a miss weight.
Yeah. Well, I think for me, if I was to do a live commentary, actually at the booth, when Eze fight DDP, I don't know if you saw my reaction, but I go, What the fuck was that? What the fuck? I said, I did. I said that went bad really fast. I can't imagine if I was there live, I'm like, What the fuck just happened, Joe? Like, Fizbing. Somebody explain what the fuck just happened. I could do that at the house, and At work, I can't do that. Like, Demetrius, we just lost 15 sponsors. It takes to your custody, your derogatory. For me, I just like to be honest, be clean, not clean, just be honest and be myself. That's why I think I'm not going to close it out that I would never commentate, but I just feel that I got to actually put work and effort into it. Instead of like this, I turn a camera and I just let it. I just start cooking.
I don't think I've ever sworn on a live broadcast, which for me is very good because people think I'm a moron, but I'm not stupid. But I'll tell you what I struggle with. It's stupid. I struggle with some of the words that you can and can't say. In England, you can say, God damn, no problem. And I drop that or say, Hell or whatever. They're like, Don't say that. Don't say, God damn. I'm like, What do you mean, Don't say, God damn? I'm like, God damn. That was amazing. They're like, No, it's not a big deal in England.
Yeah, exactly. And that's a thing that you have to toe that line when you're When you're broadcasting to all these different countries or whatever it may be. It's the same thing I know Is he able like, You feel like in England, you can say, Cunt. My dad says all the time in the house- You can't say cunt on her. Well, I know, but I'm saying... My dad, he's from England. We talked about this, and he says all these words, and I'm like, Dad, you okay? He goes, Yeah, I'm okay. I'm 50. He's 62. He was like, I don't know what people think. It's what I'm going to say. And I'm like, All right, you go ahead, dad. So I understand where you're coming from.
Whereabouts in England was he from again?
Kent.
Right. Okay. Yeah, that's what I remember. Yeah, that's the thing. And I'm similar because I just tell the truth and people say, Oh, he's really rude. I'm not being rude. I'm just not lying to you to give you the answer that you want to hear. Do you know what I mean? Certainly on the West Coast in LA, people are so polite. They won't give you the truth. It's like, Oh, yeah, that's great. And then as soon as you turn your back, they're like, Yeah, that's bullshit. That's terrible. I'm like, No, that's not good. Anyway, I was just going to say a second ago, you never missed weight in your life. Never missed weight, of course.
And I never will. And I never will, even though I'm still competing. I compete at 154, and I walk around 148. And even when I cut to 125, I was walking around 141, 142. There's just no reason for it. An athlete has one job. Actually, it has two jobs, three jobs. One of those jobs, everybody on any mixed martial arts platform, you Okay, now short week, notice, fight, all that stuff. Okay, that happens. I guess you're going to have a little flag that you can miss with whatever.
But when they accept that fight, they should be realistic with themselves and the promotion and the opponent, and to whether or not that's realistic, because if it's not, they're wasting everybody's time.
Exactly, right? So then let's go ahead, take away that little flag. If you agree upon a wait, there should be no reason why you shouldn't make it. I have cut eight and a half pounds in the day of weigh-ins, and I made it. My mindset was that I don't make as much money, and I'm not going to give the commission 15 to 20%. So I always made weight. So when I see people who don't make weight, that means they didn't take the time in an effort to diet, to do the homework, to see how they need to make it, to hire nutrition. I never hired a nutritionist to help me make weight. I have no sympathy for people who don't make weight. And the second, that's the first job. The second job an athlete has to do is just fight. Those are the only two jobs you have to do as a professional athlete. The marketing, doing the media, and all that stuff, that's all extra icing on the cake. For me, I've never missed weight, and I've always shown up to fight. The only time I had to pull out a fight was when I had to get surgery against John Maraga.
I ended up fighting him, I think it was four months later in Seattle. So yes, I never miss weight, and I never will.
Yes. Thank you for saying that. I hope a lot of young fighters hear that because it pisses me off. It's not acceptable, but it's become not as shocking. It's the norm. It's become the norm that every time a bunch of people are going to miss weight and no big deal. It's crazy to me.
Yeah, I agree. I think it needs to be... You have a lot of these people trying to cut all this weight, be the bigger guy in the division and all that stuff. And even in a jiu-jitsu competition, everyone's trying to be the biggest dude. For me, I'm like, Dude, I don't care. I mean, this is for fun for me. This is a hobby. I'm going 154. I'm not cut away. I'm trying to put on weight. I think even in mixed martial arts, I think that it may need to come to a point in time where it's like, Dude, you guys stop cut away. We're going to do same day weigh-ins, and you're going to fight the night before. You weigh in the day of, and then you fight that night. That way, people are fighting more true to their weight. It's not even just mixed martial arts, but you have it in boxing. You have Ryan Garcia who came in 4 pounds overweight, and he's like, I don't give a shit. I was like, What's the point? You're not care. It just made me not care about the fight because it shows me how you don't give a shit.
So why should I give a shit? I don't know. The whole weight, the fuck of thing, we can go on all day about it, but there's no excuse for somebody to miss weight. That's my personal opinion.
Yeah, but what you just I said there, though, that's something to purists. Purists and real hard core fans care about that stuff. The record books will always show that Garcia beat Devon Haynie. You know what I'm saying? It won't show that he missed wait and all the rest of it. Anyway, who cares about that stuff? We have 27-time World Jujutsu champion, Hinata Llanja joining us. Are you familiar with Hinata?
Baha.
Baha? He wanted to say hi to you real quick before you disappear and go. And thanks again for your time. Last question before he jumps on, unless he's late. A glorious career. Lots of belts, traveled the world, did incredible things that only people dream of. Would you recommend this for your children? Has it all worked out financially and things like that? Everything that you hope to achieve on this sport? I'm assuming the answer to all those things is yes. For me, it's a yes. I don't know about recommending it to my children, but everything else, yes, all day long.
Yeah, I agree with you. Yes, all day long. But I recommend it to my children? They would have that be, probably not, because it takes a special athlete, special mind, special person, the dedication, the discipline, the right coaches. Your body's got to be healthy enough to stay in the sport long enough. We see Rosa, Chee-wee-wee, talk about... Oh, God. He wasn't retired when he was 25. I'm like, Dude, you're 17. I was like, 25. I was like, even if you make, you better hope you win all your fights, you become a champion. You better hope you make good for your money. Let's say he made $2 million and he's 25 years old. For 25 all the way to your 38, that's not enough. You need to be able to fight longer, stretch that money out. When you're 25, you retire, You're going to be fucking bored. When I was 25, I just got into the USA when I was 26, so it was perfect. But you're 17, you're talking about you're retiring at 25. It's like, you'll be bored at school for your 25 unless you got some other shit you want to do. But we'll see.
So I would not recommend it for my children. But the mixed martial arts has given me everything and more than I ever expected that I can achieve from following one of my passions in martial arts.
Of course, you just mentioned something interesting there because I was having this conversation last night. I'm not going to I get into my finances, but we're pretty good. Life has been very kind to me. However, I'm still trying to make more money and do this and do that. Absolutely. She's like, We're fine. We're fine. We're fine. I said, I don't know if we are. She goes, What are you talking about? We've got XYZ. I said, Ben, if we live for another 50 years, that's 50 years we're going to last. I don't have a pension. Do you know what I mean? Yeah, I've got savings and we've got investments and stuff I'm not a moron, but I'm like, 50 years. If Raul Rauza Jr wants to retire at 25, let's say he lives to 90, he's got 65 years to live of what he did inside the octagon. I don't know about that.
Yeah. And that's the biggest thing people don't understand. And that's one of the things I was going to focus on when I was in the middle of my career was to be a financial adviser to let athletes know it's like, okay, how are you, business? You're like 40.
45.
You're 45. So for 45 to 80, so 40 more years, 85, 40 more years, you got to make that money stretch for 40 more years. That's where you're working, you're grinding. You guys are good, but that's a long time. And let's say, one of my friends was helping their family member, elder family member in a home. It was like 15K a month to let him stay there. $15,000 a month just to stay there when he's old. People don't account for that stuff. People don't People don't really think about that stuff where for me, I have investments. I have a lot of major things going on right now. I got the podcast, got the YouTube channel, where I'm 38, and I don't want to go back to work 9:00 to 5:00. What does that look like? I'm focused on building my brand. When we look at the full context of things of Rose talking about he wants to retire at 25, from 25 to 65, that's 40 years that the man has got to put some work in. I'm not saying he can't do it. I'm not saying he can't do it. But if he retires at 25, we're going to see him do something else.
He might be a school teacher. He might be electrician. I have no idea. But if I were to see him, I would just fight as long. I told him, Mr. Hudo, fight as much as you can because one, it's easy money, and two, you're not going to get a velocity of money where if you train for eight weeks, nobody's going to write you a check for six figures for beating the shit out of somebody. Nobody's going to do that.
Well, it's not just about the money side either, though. You need something to do with yourself. I mean, obviously, if you're a smart guy and you have people advising, you can make investments, you can get some properties and stuff like that. You can make the money work for you so that you could live off the gains that you make every single year. So it's not just about the money. It's about this. It's about the peace of mind. It's about what you do yourself. A man It needs a purpose. You got to stay busy. You got to stay active. I was just talking to someone recently, and we were talking. I said, I could probably go and retire down in Mexico, live on a beach. Would you want to do that? I'm like, No, I'd be bored. The first week, this is the shit. Week two, it's wearing off. Week three, I'm like, I'm going to be sick of margaritas. You know what I mean? If I see another sombrero or another quesadilla, I'm going to kill someone. Get me back to clithero. Anyway, where is Hinato Llanja? He's two minutes late, DJ. What do you think about people being late?
There's always an excuse. There's always an excuse. But at the same time, I have three children. I got a lot of shit going on. I don't know what his situation is. I love Hinato. No, I'll tell him.
You didn't want to stick around. You told me the wife's off out with the ladies today. You got the kids, you got to take care of stuff, and you got a life to live. Hey, Demetrius, congratulations on everything again. Seriously, be proud of yourself.
Thank you, Michael. I appreciate you always being a big fan of mine. I would never forget the moments we have cherished in sharing the locker room together and co-play. So God bless you. Let me know if you need anything, brother, and I can't wait to chat soon.
Likewise. Take care. All the best. Thank you very much.
All right, brother.

Is that what you're saying? What it means? Yeah. Okay, so carajo, it means dick, okay? Like your penis. Okay. Or what you call in Manchester. What's like a slang call?
Yeah, with penis dick.
A slang for that one. Charlie Wacker, a Taja.
Something like that. Taja. Taja.
Okay. So something like that, okay? However, when you say it, it's like you're not usually using it to talk about your Charlie Wacker. You say it like you say, for example, shit. So it's like saying dick. Taja. But it don't literally mean the dick. You know what I mean? If you say, Wow, this tastes like shit. It don't really taste like actual shit. You know what I'm saying? Yes. If you say shit, you're not talking about the shit. You know what I'm saying?
Okay. I got you, brother.
I got you. Now, poha, It's the same situation, except for with calm.
Okay.
To calm is poha. Okay? But you say it the same way. You can say poha, like shit, or fuck. Our A perfect example is when you say, for example, most of the time, you're not talking about this act of sex. You just say it's an exclamation. Poha is calm, carajo is dick, but it's just like it might be damn or fuck or whatever. So it's just like that. All these years, you didn't know that.
No, I didn't know it. And I think I might have dropped it on a UFC commentary once. I think you'll get away with that a lot.
I think a lot of people don't even know what the fuck it is. But in Brazil, they look, oh, wow.
Yeah, this guy's crazy. You just missed the legend, Mighty Mouse Johnson. He was sticking around to talk to his really keen, but he had to get going. He had to get going.
He was so keen. He was so keen. He was so Well, I saw him over there. Listen, I think that I saw him at CJI, and he probably don't want me to have any more air chime on there for his girlfriend to be looking at that one. Kind of like how you never want her Habaka. You never see you and me and Habaka in the same place because all those years ago, when she saw me in the brick shop wig, you remember? She saw the brick shop wig, she saw the spittle in the corner of my mouth. I was Oh, my God.
Hey, Brian, let's play that in a second. See if you can find it. I think I sent it the other day. Snatch it. It's on Hanato's Instagram page. You mentioned there the CGI, the Cray Jones Invitational. I know you were a part of that. There was a press conference, if you will, between Gabby Garcia and Cray Jones. Yes. Talk to me about the whole experience, man.
Well, first of all, it was a chaseful affair, as you saw. You saw that we was bringing a level of chase and they call them back to the sport. And the way I win is because it came out the blue, to be honest, because I didn't know Craig Jones in personal. And I got a call from his people, and then he was calling me. The guy, he got my number. He was called me with Chop. We'd chop it up. He said, Are you the only man that... You know when they You're in a certain fight, you got the heavyweights, and there's only certain hefaree that's big enough, strong enough to handle that one. It's the same one because Gab Garcia, she's a big, beautiful woman, Cara.
Oh, yeah. She's certainly big, and he gave her a nice little kiss at the weight. Now, was that staged? Was that bullshit? That was a lot of my bullshit.
Let me tell you something. Only the two of them could ever know if that's bullshit or not, What are you? But a case from Greg Jones is, you know how much harpy, syphilis, and also... Hapachitis might be in there. She might have been in fear for her life.
Yeah, I'm not surprised. I know. Jujutsu masters all kinds of bacteria. Brian, it's in the link here. This was one of the first times that I met you. This was about twelve years ago.
No, that's not get crazy. This wasn't about nine years ago.
No, bro, this was like 2012.
You're out of your fucking mind.
Something like that. Can we make it full screen, Brian? Look at John, the pair of words, these fellows.
Look at him with his big wig. And look, see the tea hard.
Look me, you're very fat. Shits himself when you put him in a ring.
Piper would have stick and watch his bollocks grow.
Feel like a dog, 530. We've lost Vinnie Magalesh. Shh. The accent's bad. You're going to have to repeat that. We've lost Vinnie Magalesh. Shh. The accent's bad. You're going to have to repeat that. We've lost Vinnie Magalesh. Alesh.
Well, where the fuck did you lose him to? It ain't as if he's a fucking pair of car keys, and it ain't as if he's not a big, fat, fat, obese Puerto Rican now, is he?
We're not backing out.
You bet your boss to a barn dance, you're not backing out.
We've changed your fighter.
Oh, Pauha from Coraya.
Your lady friend got voice. And who might you be changing him to, sweetheart? You won't know him, but he's mustard.
Mustard?
I don't care if he's Muhammad, Imad, and Boosamanch. You can't change fighters. You still got your fight?
No, I'll lose all bets to the bookies.
You can't change fighters at the last minute.
So no, I don't have my fight now, do I?
You've got to be some prats. You can take bets at the fight.
Put a lead on her, Turkish, before she gets bitten. And you don't want to get bitten now, do you, sweet ass? Here you go. You had trouble with this one here. Make sure your man goes down and forth. You remember how cross I get there?
You understand me now, don't you now, Turkish? Oh, God.
You could feel those lips, that chump lip on there.
I could feel it.
You I'm thin and nice, my pedigree, chams, and I shall be under it when it breaks.
Anyway, we missed the best bit. You did. You were nibbling on my ear.
No, you were off.
You're going to get us kicked off YouTube between you and Demetri Johnson. I didn't hear that. I don't care. I don't care. You are a 27-time jiu-jitsu world champion. You know the sport of mixed martial arts. You've been on Fox Sports. You're an actor. You're a movie star. We did that little skit of one of my favorite movies, Snatch. My Jason Statham impression was terrible.
Listen, in your defense, first of all, it's Michael Bispin. It's not Jason Statham. So that's the whole reason. It's already been done with Jason Statham. So we wanted the Bispin check on that. And then, second of all, I was the one who gave you a break. I discovered you. How much acting had you did before that?
I don't know. A couple of things. Not much. That was my breakout role. After that- You was caught.
You cheated on that.
I was getting called by all the big agencies. Come Monday morning. I saw That was that. Oh, I know. I know. Yeah, look at all that shit.
And now you're doing more stuff than me. Frankly, it's disgusting.
Frankly, it's unfair.
It's an insult. Yeah, it's an insult. It's a travesty. It's an insult to the spotch and also to acting, the arch.
Yeah. No, what I do is insult to acting, for sure. Anyway, Harrington normally has some non-MMA stories for us, and I thought we'd go through a couple of them with you. Harrington, what have we got today, sir?
Oh, look, herringbone.
Herringbone. Herringbone.
Herringbone look more handsome than ever. Look at that one. Oh, God. You have your salt and pepper on there. Hold on. What's your background, Conor?
Irish and a little bit of Middle Eastern, yeah.
It's the Middle Eastern. Then add the flavor.
Before, actually, Harrington, you guys were acquainted recently. Hinata, what were you? Did you referee a boxing match of Herringbone?
Yeah, I was not a referee, but I was announced that one, unfortunately.
Unfortunately?
Well, listen. I've been there with the best in the world, that Crem de la Crain. Me? Well, you're one of the best, okay? Let's put it that way. How long did you have to train for that one?
Too long to put in a performance like that.
I forgot who you was against.
Just a big, lanky kid, I know.
He actually forgot who you were completely. When we were talking, arranging him coming on today, I was like, Oh, you were involved in Harrington's boxing match. He's like, Cario, who the hell is Harrington? Who is this guy? He's the producer on the podcast.
Listen, I know him as a Harringbaum, and so you threw me for a loop to hear this guy's name, Harrington. And when was the last time you met a Middle Eastern man with the last name Herrington?
Never, never. Anyway, Hummington. Yeah, he changed that one. Not MMA story. What have you got for me and Hanassow today?
Okay, so this one noted psychologist came out with her biggest red flag for people. She said that people who relax and unwind, try to wind their day down by watching true crime stuff, they have real psychological issues. She said, These shows deal in extreme trauma. So if that trauma is giving you a sense of familiarity, you need to be seeking professional help.
What do you think about that? Because I call that study, and there's all these studies these days, absolutely bullshit. It's bullshit. It's very, very popular. I mean, forensic files, my wife has probably watched every single episode. I watch a lot of them. I enjoy them. Just recently, in fact, we were watching some show that you got to check it out. It's on HBO. It's by the director, Michael Bay, who does all the big movies. Michael Bay. It's called Born Evil.
And it's a documatch or it's a-It's a documentary, bro.
No, it's a documentary about this guy who's out there and he's murdering, sadly. You Little girls and women. And he goes to prison, and his cellmate has got long hair, and the guy thinks that he's Jesus. So his cellmate, who's pretending to be Jesus, gets him to confess where all the bodies and stuff, and they find out that he's murdered hundreds of people. It's unbelievable. It's a crazy story, and then you got to check it out. But anyway, what I'm saying is, we enjoyed that show. We enjoyed forensic files. That doesn't mean that you're a psycho or it's a red flag.
Well, it may mean that in your marriage, how long you've been married to your wife?
We've been together 25 years.
So that's 25 years of generational trauma. And imagine that she She's used to seeing her loved one going to a life and death situation, get his eyeballs dumped out of his head, being emotions, a Holocaust, going up and down, the palpitations. And then she said there, she goes, Okay, this is familiar to me. Life, death, Jesus, prison, traumatic situation, something like that.
Well, I don't know about that, but, yeah, I mean, to be fair, I have put her through a lot over the years. Maybe that is... I never thought about that. But everybody watches these stuff.
It's so popular. But maybe this is why she was so happy to run into the arms of your uncle, Hanej, during the filming of Snatchi.
She saw something, she saw a place where no one going to hurt her no more.
Oh, God.
I'm going to have a serious word with Rebecca.
She is a hair of beauty, I'll tell you. And I don't mind saying that one. She's all right. You talk too much. That one is nice, anyway.
Oh, my God. I am going to have to have a serious word. Harrods, what else have we got? Oh, Conor McGregor. You've been keeping him. You know Conor McGregor is, of course.
I know Conor McGregory's, of course. I know Conor McGregory. In fact, we follow each other on Instagram, a coincidence.
Apparently, well, he follows all the big people. He's coming back again, apparently, but he I was just out recently.
I'm not going to hold my breath here as a McGregor fan. And it's not enough McGregor for my chase, caraj.
Early 2025. That's what Dana said this week. And then he's out. He's promoting the proper 12 brand. Brian, have we got that video? Working as a barman, I think he's in New Jersey or somewhere. He's having a good time. He looks cool as hell. Come on, press play. Oh, shit.
Oh, shit. Enjoy your conference, well.
Enjoy the celebrations. We are one.
We are USA, baby.
We are USA.
I tell you what, fair play.
I think that's awesome. I think he's living his best life. He's loving it. The crowd are cheering him out. He's putting on a show. He's entertaining people. He's having a couple of cheeky drinks along the way. Fair play to that man, I say.
I got no problem with that. I'm of two minds about this because I like... Look, he was always one of my favorite fighter. When lose or draw, something exciting is going to happen in this guy's fight. Unless maybe he get shaken down, he just can't get up or something like that. But in general, there's a lot I have the excitement with this guy's fights. And from day one, it's like an Irish karate guy. You never see some weird shit like that, plus the attitude, all this stuff. So I miss him as a fighter, fighter, fighter, just fighting. But then I'm happy with the guy. What he's done is amazing. It's amazing to see someone go from where they was at to one of the most famous, one of the most celebrated people in the world. So it's exciting. It's funny to see that stuff. And you go, Oh, go ahead. Have your fun. But as a fan of the fighting, it don't look like he... How can you be motivated to came back when you're already the king of the world there?
Yeah. No, that's the very point.
What do you have to gain at that point It's like me meeting a comeback. All these guys, they want me to fight Gordon Hy, and they want me to fight all the top guys. I can only challenge my legacy at this point here.
You sound like Jon Jones. You sound like Jon You don't need to do this. You don't need to go out there. You don't need to prove. You don't need to prove anything. No, but for Connor, I tell you what's attractive for him. It's going out there and it's the feeling of winning. It's competing again. It's getting back in there. I'm showing the world I'm still one of the best.
Okay, but is that... As a fighter, you're a hit child. You was in the game more hastily than me. It's been so long for me. I forgot all this stuff. I've forgotten more than you ever know about MMA, but could you... With that level of fame, you're already famous enough. Imagine being more famous than you are now. For here, you're sometimes get bothered when you're on a has to run, all that shit. Now, imagine you're even more famous like Khana McGreggy. How the fuck are you going to... It's the training, not the getting in there, not the winning, not the taking punches and stuff. The car deal, the self-training. No, the reaction time. All this stuff that you got to do to get to the fun part. How the fuck do you put yourself through that every day?
Yeah, but the Fame side of things, it can get annoying. And now sometimes it's good if you're trying to impress someone or whatever. Or you're trying to get a table at a restaurant. It comes in handy now and again. Just recently, I was on a I was in this crappy spirit airlines. I was flying back on spirit. I was economy. Listen, because I booked my own. The fight's finished early. You cheap ass.
So he Hibaka, Hibaka, if you're listening, you just blink twice.
Listen, listen, listen. No, the fight's finished early. My flight wasn't coming back till Sunday morning. I looked online to see what was available. All that was available was one flight out spirit airline. So I booked that, I go to the airport, I jump on, and I didn't know they had a first class section, and there was one first class seat left. There's no way. And the guy sitting there- They had a first class seat. No, they had a first class section, it was actually really nice. It must be a new thing. And the guy sitting there, there was one seat left, and then the woman walks over one of the air hostesses, and she's like, The guy up there, he's just purchased the first class seat for you to sit next to him. So anyway, in circumstances like that, it's very beneficial. But generally, it can be a pain in the ass. And I can only imagine once you reach a level like a McGregor or all these big actors, famous big, big-time celebrities, it's a pain in the ass. However, McGregor loves it. I don't know if you saw this, and Brian, maybe you can find it, but it's a tough one to find.
There was a video the other day, and he goes out for a walk, and he's got his bodyguards with him, right? And he has his bodyguards, like always, like six feet ahead of him. And they're walking along and they're putting their arms out and they're drawing a attention to it. And McGregor is walking down the street like that. Yeah, with his arms on. Yeah, with the security guards doing this. If he just put a cap on, a pair of glasses, and kept his head down, no one would give him up. No one would even know it was him. But the security guard is pushing people out of the way, and he pushes a guy right into McGregor. I just thought it was hilarious.
Yeah, it's creating the problem. Yeah, it's entrapment. I mean, look, put it to you this way. I'll watch that guy fight any time. I don't care if he's bare-knuckles in that shit or a Cahari champion or whatever the fuck it is, Juan, whatever it is. If he's in a movie, I'll check it out. If he's doing a stupid commercial, I don't care. It's a spectacle to me. And love him or hate him, he makes life more interesting.
Without a shadow of a doubt. And that's why I want him to come back. Listen, I don't know how successful he's going to be. I think he'll do good. I think he's got a good shot of beating Chandler, but the sport is just with him involved. The energy, the excitement that he brings, the extra eyeballs, the attention to the sport. And that benefits everybody involved, all the fighters, all the up and comers, sponsors, everything. There's more attention. So he's done great things for the sport, mixed martial arts. I really do believe that. Do you keep up with the UFC, Hinato? Are you aware the Sphere this week?
Yes, but the thing about the UFC is you got to imagine You and I, we started out when these fights was once every, I don't know, once every year, maybe. And then it used to get banned, and then it wasn't for another two year, whatever. Nowadays, there's so many fights with the UFC to the point where There might even be a main event where I don't know who is that guy. You know what I'm saying? So I might not be up as much as you, but a big one like this, yeah, I'm aware of that one. But if you're digging in the weeds about The one that was on Facebook Prime or whatever the fuck, I don't even know what's going on with that one.
Well, compared to back in the day when I first started getting involved, there was five events a year. If you were a fan, it was impossible not to know. Now we're lucky because there's events almost every single weekend. So unless you're a real hardcore guy, it's tough. Sean O'Malley, though, what do you think about this guy? He's slowly taking over the sport because he knew McGregor.
Listen, when he was able to beat When he beat Jan, I was like, Oh, shit. And then when he beat Alja Man, I was truly... If he can beat that guy, he can beat anybody because on the pitch, I don't know who can deal with the guy. And if you can beat a guy that's that good at wrestling and that good at jiu-jitsu. And look at what Al Jamain does to everybody else. What was the last fight he had?
Was it Calvin Cater? Al Jamain? Was it Calvin Cater? I'm not sure. It was someone like that. I forget. Oh, no, no. Henry Sohudo.
He was? I believe so. Now, your brains is not what it once was, got to argue.
Maybe. It might have been Sohudo.
It was some fighter that's top of the food chain, and he dictated the whole thing It was a master class. I can't remember who he was exactly. But Carayu, I mean, and O'Malley, he's special. He's what we thought he could be. He is that. Yeah.
Yeah. No, he is. He's a big star.
Look, could he be beat? Yeah, of course. But if you... Oh, God, are you?
Look what we have.
Adrian, how are you doing, my brother?
Man, I am doing good, man, in front of legends, man. I'm excited for this, man. By the way, man, by the way, I got to give you your props on this, but that sit down interview, you and Gabby and Craig, was absolutely phenomenal, man. I had a blast watching it. You did such a great job. I am impressed with you.
I appreciate that, my brother. I just tried to do my best to keep them on track and keep them focused for the fight. It was one for the agent, Scott.
What's going on? I was going to say, Adrian, do you know Hinato? Do you know each other? It turns out that you guys, my God, I'm just sitting over here like I don't exist. You two just crack on. I'll take the day off. I'll take the day off. You just do the show.
I don't think the fans would mind that, and I don't think Hibaka is going to mind that one. Anyway, Hibaka, I'm just kidding.
No, I know. I don't mind. How do you say Adrian's last name, Hinata?
Yohanasi. That's funny. He's laughing at your last name. You think it's funny that he laughed at your name? He's a proud Mexican-American, caray.
Yeah, well, that's why... Welcome to the show, by the way, Adrian Yanez. I had to get you one here, of course, UFC 306 this weekend.
Wait, you'll say Yanez? You have an N-Y on there?
Yeah, I have an N-Y on mine. Yes. I just don't know how to type it on the computer, bro. That shit's weird.
Okay, so Janiez. So Adrian, Janiez. Adrian, Janiez. Oh, yes. So, Adrian, young, yes. Young, yes. Adrian, young, yes.
Oh, yes, yes. Perfect. Perfect. That's perfect. Thank you.
I noticed you got your- Big focus on.
You got your jury girls in full effect now.
A little bit, a little bit, man. I'm thinking about letting it grow all out all over the place. But I feel like a lot of people have a lot of jury girls, man, nowadays. So I'm not going to It's me. I'm not going to go with it.
But don't- It looks cool, man.
Just don't cover your eyes when you're fighting. You don't want to have to keep doing that shit.
I used to do that all the time. I used to have to do that all the time. Because I have one eye.
I was about to say you're putting your eyeball back.
He's putting the hair. No, no, no. You're going like this. The hair used to cover my eye. So I was always doing this. And everyone used to be like, Why are you doing that? And it's like, Well, because I've only got one goddamn eye, so I couldn't say that publicly. I was like, Shut up, you dickheads. Hinata, we're going to get into some hard core analysis. We're going to talk about Mexican Independence Day. We're going to move this show along. So listen, I'm going to say thank you for your time today. And I'm going to say you are always interesting to talk to. But this is a really polite way of me getting rid of you.
I understand that because you guys is worried that I'm not going to say anything chaseful about Mexican-American heritage and stuff like that. And maybe you got a point there, Paul.
What is your opinion on Mexican Independence Day, Hinata, if you even have one?
I think that they're eating you pets. I think they're eating your dog here. I think they're eating your cat. And we got to address that one. Check it easy for her and child.
No, no, no, no, no, That was the best line. That was the best line. That was hilarious. Now leave. Get out of here. Get out of here.
Okay, ciao.

Oh, man, I am doing great, man. Lucky to be here. Happy to be here, man. Thank you for having me on.
Oh, no, not at all. With the card this weekend, with it being such a massive focus on Mexican fighters, Mexican heritage, of course, Mexican Independence Day, and all the fighters that are on there, I thought, I got to get a Mexican on. I got to get a real bonafide hard core killer that can give us some analysis that has a great personality. And I thought, who could that be? And I thought, my God, the one and only, Adrian Yanez. How you been, buddy?
Oh, man, I was about to say, yeah, you just couldn't get somebody else, right? So you had to go to the bottom of the barrel.
We went through everybody. I called everyone. I was like, come on, come on. We're going to have someone better than this. How's life, bud? I know you're going to win recently over Salvador, Vinicius Salvador. Another knockout. When was that? May, something like that?
Yeah, back in May. Back in May, man. Been chomping in the bit to get back in there, but stuff happens the way stuff happens. So just sitting by, staying ready the whole entire time. So just in case something pops up. But yeah, loving living life, man. Been It's been a blessing, man. These past couple of months have been blessings, man. So I'm really excited about what's to come.
So still down in Houston, still running the gym, right? Still coaching that gym. What's the name of that place?
So we're at Metro Fight Club at Oathletic. But I do also train. I do have a train at Heritage with two other coaches with Eve Edwards and Michael Chase Corley. So I've been having coaches, so they help me run a lot of stuff, too.
Okay, so you were on... What was the streak? It was like 10 fights or 8 fights, 9 fights. I forget what it was. You were on a hell of a streak. You were doing incredible. You were knocking everybody out. The boxing was phenomenal. And then you hit a couple of speed bumps along the way. It was Jonathan Martínez and Rob Font. High-level guys. Then you bounce back, you get the job done over, Vinícius. How's the mind? How's the emotions of the fight game treating you?
Oh, When it comes to the fight game, I'm mentally locked in. I now know what's the winning recipe for me and where I need to be at. I knew my winning recipe and the mentality I was before I got to that position. I just got way too comfortable. And then I started whenever you got too many people in your ear telling you, No, this guy got nothing for you. Hey, no, it's not that I don't. This guy has nothing for me. Let's find a way to beat this guy. And it ended up just being like, No, man, you got this. And you don't have to worry about this guy. And then at some point, when you hear that too much, you end up start believing it. And I drink my own Kool-Aid 2023. So going into that Rob Faden fight, I was just overlooking him, even though I knew I shouldn't be overlooking him. And that's where I started up at because I was even saying in a lot of interviews beforehand, it's like the dude's a cockroach. The dude's just not going to... My bad. I'm sorry. He's just not going to go out.
So I hit him with one shot and I saw him do a little dance, a small little thing in fight. And I was like, Oh, I got him. Chase after him. And I tell this to people all the time. When you start chasing for the knockout, you end up getting knocked out. So that's what happened to me on that fight. And then going into the Jonathan fight, I was already... It's like whenever you're around those people, it's like, Man, you just got clipped, man. That's all that happens. But there was no breakdown of it, and it was just like, Hey, all right, cool. You just got clipped. It's fine. Let's go. And then midway through that camp, got some little setbacks here within camp and all that stuff. So walking into that fight, it was a little bit weird. Still had the mental stuff from the font fight bleeding in. And then now once I got past it And once I had surgery and had to sit on the couch for about three straight days on the machine, got me really sitting down and thinking what I needed to do. And man, as stupid as it sounds, I was grateful for me just to sit down on that couch and just being on that machine made me do a lot of soul searching and thinking.
And it was just more like, man, I can never let this happen again. And I now know what adjustments I needed to do. And I just started doing so much more film studies, started doing so much more like helping out my teammates. And once I started helping them out and started breaking down stuff for them and seeing what I could do to help them, in turn, I started seeing like, oh, I could do this for myself. I started doing all that for myself. And it just... By the time fight time came in, I have worked that overhand so many times. It just came natural for me. And it was just one of those things where I just... I got so careless with it. I was throwing it from I'm way back where I'd get myself a C minus grade going into that Venetia Salvador fight with how it finished, C minus. I'm not impressed with it.
Well, it was what was it? First round knockout. So God, I've been too bad. Don't be too hard on yourself. That's all part of the journey. It's all part of the experience. And typically, there's people that come along like Habib or... Well, I was going to say Islam. Look at Islam makachev. He got cracked against Adriana Martins, the only loss on his record, and that was a knockout in the first round. So it happens to the best of them most of the time because it's not boxing. You don't pad your record to 30, 40 absolute bombs. As soon as you get to the UFC, you're fighting real talent. So don't let that get you down. You rebound and you got a beautiful knockout. Let me ask you, did you ask to be fighting on the sphere card? Was there any possibility of that?
Right after I got done, I was asking. I was like, I know it's a long shot, but September 14th, on that sphere card, I would love to be a part of it. But again, it was a long shot from the beginning. I already knew it was going to be hard to even get locked in on that card. But I was like, hey, it's either That quarter, August or September. So I was looking to stay active and stay in the gym and pretty much get ready for a fight. I wish I had already fought by now. So, yeah, it was just a long shot just to me get booked on the sphere.
So let me ask you this, because as an English white guy living in America, I have absolutely zero idea about the significance of Mexican Independence Day. Is it a big deal for you guys? A big deal down in Mexico? Does the country shut down for a day and things like that?
Oh, yeah. Just think of it like the fourth of July, like the fourth of July here. That's pretty much what it is. I know we got two. It's a sink of the mile on the Mexican Independence Day, and it So especially growing up, for me, what made it even bigger and better was we're always watching boxing on those days. You always had the people like Juan Manuel Marquez, and then also Julio César Chávez always fighting on those cards. Then you had someone like Mayweather who came in and stole those dates and was fighting nothing but Mexican or people of Latin descent on those times, and it ended up being very successful for him. And now it's Canelo's dates. So it Again, in boxing, it's always been part of something that I know a lot of Mexican fighters and Mexican people absolutely love. Those two dates, it's always been like, Hey, let's go pack it up. Let's go watch these fights. Let's go watch these boxing matches. Let's go get drunk. So that's pretty much growing up. That's how it was for me. Sounds like a fun time.
It's funny that you mentioned Canelo there because Canelo was making some headlines yesterday saying that he's asking McGregor to come and box him, which, A, again, another massive opportunity for Conor McGregor to go out there and make a ton of money. I don't think McGregor is going to do very well if that was to even ever happen. The reality is, McGregor, he could fight out his UFC contract. He could lose all of those fights, but because of who he is, there's still a potential for that matchup. But it's like, Canelo is one of the best boxers we've ever seen. I just wish at some point a boxer will come to the UFC and try that way around. I'm sick of all these boxers going. Sorry, MMA fighters, going to boxing, fighting Jake Paul, fighting Floyd Mayweather, fighting Canelo. Do you know what I mean? And then every time they go, Oh, yeah, MMA fighters, they can't fight. When you think of Mexican boxers, Legends, what's the first name that comes to mind for you?
For me, Legends, especially because I would always watch his highlights is Julio César Chávez. But we can even go a little bit before then and say Salvador Sánchez. He could have had a super great career if he didn't die at such a younger age. I think he was 25 when he passed away or 25 or younger. But that he was something to look like... He would have been the next legend. He would have been Julio César Chávez. Julio César Chávez would have been the second coming of Salvador Sánchez. That's how I would have looked at it. But yeah, that guy is a legend. And then also Marquez. Then also, too, now we have Canelo up there, man. So there's a lot of solid fighters, even And then Isai Cruz, the way he came out and fought against Trivante take Davis, supposed to be a guy that he was supposed to get run over. He was supposed to be like a runover for Davis, ends up coming out and doing what he does, made it a super competitive fight. There's just a lot of talent out there in Mexico, man. It's like as soon as they're born, they just put them in boxing gloves or soccer clees and just like, Hey, let's go.
Yeah, exactly. And that's why the term Mexican fighter is such a great compliment. I remember Ross Pearson on the ultimate fighter. Jacob Steets Durán, the cupman. He was with the UFC for a long time, and he's one of the biggest cupmen in the UFC. Him going to Ross Pearson when he was ripped into the body. He's like, Man, you fight like a crazy Mexican, bro. And Ross Pearson was like, I meant so much to him, and I was jealous because everybody wants to hear that. It's amazing. So with that, let's get into some of these fights. We'll just do the main card. Are you familiar with a lot of the guys on here, Ronaldo Rodriguez. You know this guy? Are you familiar with him?
Not with Ronaldo Rodriguez. He's the one that's fighting Ode Osborne, right?
Ode Osborne, yeah.
Yeah. I know Ode very well. I'm not Rodriguez, I'm not 100% sure, but I know if they propped him on the main card, he's definitely one of those guys that they're really looking forward to.
Yeah. I'm just looking him up here. They call him Lazy Boy. I did some analysis for him recently. He had one fight in the UFC It was against Dennis Bondar. Second round, Rear and Hakey Chou, going up against Ode Osborne. Ode Osborne is one of those guys. He's been up and down with his career, but he is a lot of fun to watch. And he says that he's going to go out this week. I forget the terminology he used, he's going to put on a masterpiece. He's going to have the best performance of his career. I mean, everyone says that leading into a fight. But I think Ode Osborne is probably going to get this one done. He's just got more experience. He's walking out of the sphere. If you're not used to that atmosphere, and nobody's used to the atmosphere of the sphere, you know what I'm talking about. When you walk out from the 20,000 people, it's crazy, right? Yeah.
I will say this, going from a guy who fought in the fight in the apex five straight times before he fought in front of the audience, that was an absolute game changer. Walking out, just feeling the vibration of the arena and feeling the fans and the energy, that was absolutely wild. Wild experience. And if you're not used to that, then the first thing you're walking into is just a whole new experience of... Again, whole new experience, whole new arena, whole new... Man, you just walk out and you're just going to be seeing a whole bunch of screens. What is it that you're walking into? I don't know how the production or anything like that is set up, but I'm pretty sure it's going to be absolutely wild. That would probably bring some nerves, especially with that being as a second fight in the UFC. And Oday already been there for a very long time. He's fought on some big cars, been able to be a part of fighting at the apex, fighting in stadiums and all that stuff. So I think it would be easier to cope for Oday. And then also, too, Oday, man, despite his up and down record in the UFC, he's a very good striker.
He's an absolute phenomenal striker.
He's a beast on the feet. He's extremely quick. He's a great wrestler as well. He really impressed me when he went up against Charles Johnson, the wrestling ability that he showed Charles Johnson. He's not an easy man to beat, and he got the job done there. Next fight along, we are best about Reba Vicks. He's got one win. I don't know if you saw that one. He knocked out Terrence McKinney. You remember that one? A head kid? Terrance McKinney was unconscious, sat down on the canvas, sat up against the octagon fence, out like a lion.
Oh, yeah. I remember that one. Man. Yeah. That one was scary. That one was scary. That made me look at a lot of these guys differently. I'm just like, Oh, man, bro. I wouldn't want to get domed with the kick.
Yeah. Especially not sat. I mean, I've been knocked out. I've been knocked out unconscious, but I've never been knocked out while sat up. Do you know what I'm saying? Terrence is a great guy. I'm not talking shit, but you know what I mean? He's taking on Daniel Zalhuba. But listen, let's get These are the three big ones. This is what we're here for. Brian Ortega, Diego Lopez. What is your take on that one?
Oh, man. I've been really impressed with Diego, and then especially, I got to train with him back in March. So I got to train with the back of Marsh, seeing how the whole camp gets ran. I'm really like, man, it's to the point where I want to go personally work with their head coach, Francisco, just because the knowledge that he has and how they run their training sessions. Diego Lopez, again, he has really solid, really good grappling. I want to see how those exchanges go between him and Brian, because, of course, they both like to box. They both like to throw hands and throw with mean ferocity and all that stuff. But to me, what I'm actually a little bit more intrigued about is how their ground game and their jiu-jitsu actually would collide because Brian Ortega is really solid on the ground, but so is Diego Lopez. He only get to show small little glimpses here and there. But, man, I've been with him in the gym. The guy is so good.

Have you addressed the great Adrian Yanez?
No, because I haven't been called on to the show yet, but Adrian, it's good to see you, man. I'm very happy to see you. Good to see you, too, brother. That went back in May, and I'm also saying not on this card.
Hey, he was talking about Brian O'Tega there, as we know. Great jiu-jitsu. Play that video, Brian O'Harrington, what you said earlier. Brian O'Tega at the Open Workouts. To be fair, you're like, Oh, my God, he showed off amazing jiu-jitsu. This is more Brian O'Tega showing off amazing athleticism more than jiu-jitsu, but there's flying triangles. Stay on, Harrington. Jump on. Have we got that video, Brian? I think it's in the chat somewhere or in the notes.
It is in the notes. It's at the very, very bottom. I can pull it up for Brian.
Look at this.
Oh, yeah.
Hold on, wait for this. I mean, that's very nice. Flying triangles. It's beautiful. Let's see that guard pass. Brian, just play that start bit again. Just to start. Sorry, buddy. Non-handed cartwheel. It's beautiful. It's great. Stay on, Hamilton. The thing And I'm saying that as you know, Adrian, when you're drilling with a partner that's willing, you can do all that stuff. And I'm not criticizing Brian Ortega, by the way. That's beautiful. He's clearly got amazing technique. But to your point, I want to see Diego Lopes and Ortega Ortega go at it on the ground. I think Lopes, not saying he's better than him at jiu-jitsu, I'm saying it's not an issue for him on the ground because he's that good. And on the feet, I think Lopes is probably a little quicker and maybe a little more dangerous. The story is here, remember, this fight was booked for three or three. They were meant to fight at 145 pounds. Ortega was struggling to make the weight, so they moved the fight to 155. So Lopes agreed He's to move up, even though he done most of the wake up. They go to 155. Later in the day, Ortega gets pulled from the car.
Three hours later, Dan Ige steps in. I know Tiago Lopes, still Brian Lopes, still gets the job done. You know what I mean? That's impressive from Diego Lopes. I'm picking Diego Lopes in this one, and I'm a fan of Brian Ortega.
Oh, yeah. No, I'm picking the same thing, man. I like Ortega. I I like Ortega. I like his fighting style. He likes to come forward and he likes to throw down. But what I will say is after training with Diego and seeing how they train, sparring and moving around with them, I was like, yeah, no, I think he's a solid guy. He knows what he's doing. He knows what he's doing in the stand-up, and he knows what he wants to do on the ground, man. So I really do think he's going to find a way to cliff Ortega because I remember sending a breakdown once. I sent it, too, because we also had the same manager. I remember doing a small little breakdown on Ortega, just seeing when he throws, his hands are usually start going to his chest. They start in the midst of everything, and he starts His hand starts to lower it down a little bit. He starts throwing shots. And then when he backs up, he tries to do a little bit of a... Let his lead's shoulder start coming up, and his right-hand doesn't come back all the way back up how you would for a regular in a Philly shell.
It's usually down to his chest. And whenever I was watching that and I start seeing what Diego Lopez does, I'm like, That's a recipe for disaster for Brian. There's a lot of openings. He's not very strict with his hands, with his hand position. His lead hand will be a little bit lower, almost like the rib cage area. Right hand, usually it's up, but it's not all the way. It tends to be a little bit further away. And Lopes stays He is strict with his hands. He starts to move his way in.
See, I understand what you're saying now, and Harrods, just chime in whenever you want. We'll keep this nice and conversational. I understand what you're saying now, and you're speaking now, Adrian, as a guy that has got proper technique that knows how to box. But we see it all the time in mixed martial arts, people's hand placement and shit is just all over the place. I mean, Chuck Liddell used to be like this, out here like that, that any boxing coach would say, What the hell are What are you doing? But he'd knock people out, and then we get these celebrations. You know what I'm saying? So yeah, you're right. Maybe the hand placement isn't quite correct. But never mind. I agree. I still have Diego Lopez winning that one. Harrington, be prepared. See if you can keep up with the analysis that Harrington gives now. This is big.
What I was going to ask is for somebody like Ortega, who has this reputation of being so scary on the ground, most guys are low to ever go down there with him and test out their grappling. Could this be a disadvantage for Diego Lopez? Having such a good ground game, being willing to test it against somebody like Ortega, where most guys aren't willing to, and all of a sudden, he snapped up in a guillotine like everybody in Ortega's rise.
But hold on, hold on. Look at the main event last week, Gilbert Burns, Sean Brandy. Exact bigger guys, stronger guys. But I understand what you're saying, but it's relevant to the conversation.
Yeah, I feel like whenever you're a little bit more in jiu-jitsu, just in general, you see what he likes to go for. Everything that you see Brian take it going for is usually guillotines, arm and guillotines, usually looking for triangles. Again, that's where he got the nickname T-City, all that stuff. So you have a grasp of already what he's going to be looking for. So I wouldn't be surprised if Diego, if he were to try to take it to the ground immediately, just know what position he needs to be off of, especially because then, again, it all starts off in the wrestling, not just like, both of us dropped to our butts and start busking towards each other. It's like, No, there's an initial shot that's needed to be taken. So it's either going to be somebody gets dropped, Then they rush up on top or there's a wrestling exchange. So for me, if you're game planning around Ortega, I wouldn't be telling the guy like, hey, no set up, just shoot in because that guillotine is coming like no other. You're getting choked unconscious. You'd be like, now you put a combination up and don't expect to finish the double and try to jump in the guard.
No, as soon as you start looking for that double, you immediately start looking to pass the side control. You can't put yourself in those type of positions against someone like Ortega. So I know, again, I've been a part of that camp. The coach is smart enough to take a look at that and be like, all right, this is what we need to be doing.
Yeah. See, I'm following you 100 % there, and I'm with you all of a way. I'm just wondering if... Because it must be hard when they're in the gym with you and you're coaching, because you are very analytical, very technical, and I know exactly what you're talking about there. But when you have a lot of beginners in your gym and you're training them, they're probably like, What the fuck is he talking about?
This is stuff.
Main event, I've got Sugar Sean O'Malley. I think Miranda Valley is going to cause some problems. I think he's going to have success. He hasn't been on the street that he's on without being competent. He's here for a reason, and I believe it's a really tough fight. However, I think Sean will find a way over five rounds. I think he'll get it done. I think he's a master of range, the footwork, the rhythm, the timing, and the length and reach that he has. I think it just creates a big, big problem for Sean. Sorry, for Marab. I'm picking Sean to win. Harrington, we'll get your pick, and then Adrian. So what have you got, Harrington? Who do you think?
Look, I'm literally on the edge of my seat waiting for Adrian to break this down, so I'm not going to take up any more time than I need to. I'm going to say, everything you said, I love the way Sean O'Malley uses distance, the way he uses footwork. Anytime he's back up against the cage, he's looking for the way out. He's beating guys with foot placement and the sidekicks that he has, right? Just the length of his lens, how he can keep people at a distance. But Rob is going to need to be eating two, three shots to get in. And as soon as he is, I feel like O'Malley is going to be out the back door.
And bear in mind before you go, Adrian, the The Great Mighty Mouse, Demetrius Johnson. He was on earlier. He predicts Marab Divalishvili gets the job done. So with that said, what do you think? Who wins this fight and how?
I'm going to put a lot of my biases aside whenever I start talking about this, just because I like Marab. I've trained with him before. He's a super nice guy, type to give me your shirt off your back. I'm not very Me and Sean butted heads before. So I'm just like, I'm going to put all biasy aside, and I'm going to look at this very strategically.
Tell us about the butting up the heads with the champ. We got to hear this.
Oh, yeah. On our rise, and there's a point in time where we're going to fight each other. But I think he ended up getting the Pedro Muno's fight, and ended up fighting Tony Kelly. So there was a little bit of like, Hey, calling out. This is back. This is back in 2022. So there's still a little bit like, Ah, fuck. I took a different route. He took a different route, and he got there, and I'm like, Ah, shit. All right. So a little bit of like, irkiness, but it is it.
It's okay. You're in the same weight class. It happens.
Oh, yeah. We're going to fight someday. So it is what it is. But whenever I look at this fight, I know how sharp O'Malley is. He looks for people to close distance. He looks to gather his timing. He is one of those guys that as soon as they get into the fight, it takes them 15 to 30 seconds to gage his timing. He's just one of those guys that his timing and then also what distance he needs to be at. And I feel like for somebody to be able to do that, they have to have good physical body awareness and especially having a good coach, being able to sit back and be like, All right, cool. This is our distance. This is where we need to be. And he started looking at some of the The training footage. Man, they put it all together, especially in the stand-up department, very well. And if you got somebody like Marab, man, again, coming back to the hand placement. The hand placement is still shoulder level, still a little bit too far. And he has this bounce where he's... It's still like a slight head movement, but he's still bouncing outside his side.
He's looking to try to gage and close the distance. And from what I see from a lot of these guys, as soon as he starts looking to come in, that's where Marab ends up getting caught. But the plus side on Marab is he has that never die attitude where he's able to... He gets hurt. He knows how to survive. He knows how to put himself in a really good position. But against Shauna Mali, let's go back to Conor McGregor versus Eddie Alvarez. Eddie Alvarez was one of those do or die guys who would always be able to recover and be able to come back and get a comeback win. I was like, But when you have someone who knows their distance and knows how to finish their fight smart and knows how to finish their strategically. Like Connor, he gets somebody hurt, he never rushes it. He picks his spots and moments. And I feel that's something that Sean O'Malley has. I feel like he would be able to find that timing and able to find the range very early on. And if he does that, I don't think it's a very long night for...
It's not a very long night for Sean. I do feel that he can catch Marab coming in. I was like, But if he doesn't, this is the part where I get a little bit like, Man, I don't know who to really to choose because if he doesn't, Marab is just one of those guys. As soon as he gets his hands on you and his hands are locked, you're not going anywhere. You're going for rides, you're getting held. Man, he'll let you back up just to take you back down. He does not care. He doesn't mind getting a takedown. All right, cool. I know I can get you down. You pop right back up. I'm taking you right back down. He doesn't mind testing your cardio. He doesn't mind pushing you and putting you in places that you've never been before, especially for somebody like Sean. It's one of those things where you have to play all of it. So you got to get inside. You got a dirty box. And also In such a dominant win with that fight we had with Chris Mutinho, there's also something you have to take a look at that whenever you're Marab.
Because if Marab, again, you got to be a little bit more defensively minded. But If you can walk yourself into those range and start looking for the shots and start looking for the takedowns, I feel like he'll have a way better success than what... I guess, again, it's one of his most dominant wins in that Chris Mutinho fight. But if you look at it and you look from a fighter perspective, be like, there's something there. You see we're like, Okay, well, you can see him slow down a little bit, even though he was on cruise control a little bit. But there was no threat of a takedown. There was no threat of punches. But if you add that and you take that and you put it in somebody in mirage, be like, look, take this path. But also we're going to cause problems. We're going to throw hands, and then we're going to look for our shot. We're going to throw our kicks, but then we're going to look for our shot. And you just keep that pace of being in his face like Chris Moutinho did, even though that didn't work out for him.
Again, there's just always that one little thing you could take from a fight and just be like, I see what I can do with this and enhance it. Yeah, And that's what I'd be telling him, Rob, a little bit.
Yeah, and the Chris Matinho, if I remember, he took that short notice. He wasn't on the UFC roster, and he did take a lot of shots before the finish came. It was impressive. So if I'm in the corner of Marab, and when you look at the stature of Marab, when you look at the build of Marab, the fact that he's not the biggest 135er, he doesn't cut a crazy amount of weight like Aljimane Sterling did. He will have the ability to take a shot. And just his general build and his structure, and he doesn't have a big long He has a big, massive head. He has a big, solid jaw. No, but the guy takes a good shot, so he's going to be hard to finish just by the makeup of his body. And then when you combine it with the ferocity that he has, and when you look at the fact that people like Chris Matinho were able to take a lot of shots. For Marab, okay, you don't want to take two, three shots to get the clinch. But worse comes to worse, that might be the game plan to just push him up against the fence, get a hold of him.
And once he gets those hands joined, once he's got a hold of him, it will be a problem for Sean. As you mentioned, catching him on the way in. That's what he's looking to do. That's what he's going to look to do because you know Marab, he's going to be forward. Marab isn't playing that game. He ain't fucking trying to counterstrike. He ain't dancing around and using all of that octagon. He's just going to follow Sean, go at him 100 %. It's going to be up to Sean to be light on the feet, moving on footwork, moving around, picking him apart, picking him apart, looking for openings. And this is where it becomes a fight Because it's so annoying because Arab will get him down. He will pick him up. He will take him down. He'll carry him across the octagon. Sean is going to have to continue to get back to his feet, and then the fight starts all over again. And who's got the cardio, the tenacity, the mental fortitude to continue this battle and not make any mistakes.
Yeah. See, and I completely agree with that. It's one of those weird things where for me, whenever I'm looking at this, it's like, who's going to be able to implement what first? That's pretty much what I've been telling everybody. It's either one or the other for me. I can never break it down. So as soon as I start breaking this down, it's just like, man, it's either Sean catches them early or Marab takes them for a five-round beating. I was like- But which is it?
We need a name. We need a choice. We need a pick. You are disgusting. You're breaking it down perfectly. You're giving a lot of I have to have a lesser knowledge. If there was a PhD in five breakdowns, it would go to you. You would own one. You would have one. You would have the glass on the wall.
Somebody make it because I want to make it look cool Whenever I send my resume into... If I send it into the UFC, be like, Hey, look, you need a fight breakdown guy? Here's my resume. I need it.
I'll take the job. So without that, I need a name. I don't want 50 sentences before it. I want a name.
So I will give you a name.
I can't do nothing.
We can't do it.
It depends on the scenario.
What's the win going to be that day? I am going to go Sean O'Malley, and I will give my reasoning why. Because I feel... Because, again, it's the distance that he plays at. It's the distance. And again, I mentioned that Chris Mottinho fight. The biggest thing from that fight to take away is he was not afraid to step into the range. A lot of these guys are leaping into the range. That's what was Aljo's biggest mistake. He was outside in this no man land trying to close. I think I've explained it to people once before. As soon as you go into a fight, there's four levels. Level four, you're outside of kicking range. Outside of kicking range, no There's nothing there. Three is kicking range, two is boxing range, and three is in the clinch, like a take down as a wrestling. You can't go from level four all the way to level one. You can't do that. And that was Aljo's biggest mistake in that fight with O'Malley, where he immediately went from, I'm going from four to one. And if you look at Marab's fights, that's where Marab is getting clipped at. And I feel like O'Malley will catch him coming in, and he won't rush it.
He'll stylistically break it down so he gets to finish. And again, I want Marab to win just because, man, he's a solid guy. But if I'm the betting Man, I'm putting my money on Amali. That's where I'm at.
Yeah, and that's really well said, and I like that. I'm going to steal that. I'm going to use that because it is the four ranges, kicking range, punching range, in the pocket, in the clinch. And as you said, you can't go, you can't bypass That's all of that stuff. It's like telegraphing your shot. That's exactly what it did. If you're all the way out there, it's like, How the fuck are you going to get in here and you think I'm not going to see it. Even if I don't connect a shot, even if I don't catch you and knock you out, I'm going to sprawl. I'm going to use my hips. I'm going to get an underhook. So whenever What you're doing is a wasted effort. As you know, in a fight, you've got to be economical with your energy. You can't be predictable. You can't telegraph things and go from all the way out there. And I like that from 0.4 all the way to 0.1. It ain't going to work unless you're coming forward, throwing some distraction, throwing some shots, using feints, level changing, bringing something, and using the feet to get on the inside before you go for the shot.
Final question for you, Adrian Yanaz. Yanez. In a boxing match, Sugar Sean O'Maller versus Adrian Yanez. Who wins? Who takes it? What are you saying?
Oh, man, I TK-O, man. I hit him. I hit him right there in that liver, and I stop him, man. Because here's the other question, are we doing 8, 10 or 12? Because I would rather do 12. I want it all the way for 12. That's the way I would take it. Especially, you're telling me to strap on some boots, put on some trunks, and put on the 8s? I'm down. I don't have to worry about takedowns. I don't have to worry about kicks. Yeah, I'm here. I feel like I've finished them.
How old are you, Adrian?
I'm 30.
30 years old, man. 30 years old, just getting started. You've had an incredible run, an incredible career, incredible I can see you on the UFC desk at some point soon. Certainly, if they hear this, they're going to like, get rid of Bispin. This guy is the way better. That 4-1 genius. Bisbit's got one eye, he's hung over half the time, he's bloody useless, his voice is shit. This guy's Mexican.
He can do it all. I'm going to put you down as a reference as well, too.
Oh, 100 %. I will sign it. Adrian, thanks for your time today, buddy. We'll let you get out of here. I appreciate you jumping on. Can't wait to see you back in there. That's what you're best at. I love, truly. I'm a fan of what you do. I love the box and the skill on display. All the best with the career going forward, and I'll talk to you soon.
Thank you all so much for having me on. Thank you for the platform. See you later, Harrison. My man. Harrington. My bad.
Harrison. He's been called Harringbone, Harrison.
This must be what Yanez Yanez feels like.
It does. That's exactly what it is.
Well, hold on for years, and even still to I get called Biz Bing.
Biz Bing.
I'm like, It's Biz Bing. Which is even worse.
I get it. I let people whitewash my last name for too long. I'm tired of it being whitewashed. Let's throw a any on this. I tried to do it just in time for not to, but they said, No, you can't sneak in today.
God damn. Adrian, you're the man. Get out of here. Take it easy, brother.
I love you all, guys.
You all have a good one. All the best. All the best. Bye-bye. Tell you what, Jesus Christ, he's got a real good analytical mind. He's fantastic.
Yeah, that was so fun to listen to. I get what you're saying for the person at home, but I know anyone watching this right now was salivating like I was listening to like, Oh, what? This is what fighters see? That's so cool.
Yeah. No, it is. It's fantastic. Anyway, I think that's the show. We've been going for an hour and 55 minutes. Brian is going to get this edited up to be at the normal drop time of 9:00 PM Pacific, 05:00 AM UK time, and wherever you are in the goddamn world. So we're not going to do questions today, but if you have the next show, send them in. Bympod@gmail. Com. Send them in. Make them inquisitive, make them entertaining, make them funny, make them whatever you want. Just make it a good question. Anyway, big thanks, Renato, Demetrius Johnson, of course, Adrian, Yanez, Janiez, Harrington, and Brian. We'll see you soon. Take care.
