Transcript of Working mom's tearful confession on family living paycheck to paycheck
Fox NewsWelcome back to The Big Weekend Show. California governor, Gavin Newsom, seems to think that rising cost of living was just one big conservative lie. He posted on X, quote, Things you won't see on Fox News today, prices for Thanksgiving are down from turkey to air travel. Yeah, well, Newsom may want to talk to this woman whose heartbreaking confession on TikTok is going viral, probably because it is hitting home for so many people. Let's watch.
I feel like my husband and I are doing everything right. We both have good jobs. I'm a nurse. I'm a registered nurse. I work full-time. He works full-time. We just got paid this past Friday, right? We paid the mortgage, bought some groceries, put some gas in the car. I think, guys, it is Tuesday, and we have like $200 or $300 to last us until next Friday.
Yeah, that was heartbreaking. We had a chance to interview her this morning, and she said a little bit more about her situation. Let's take a listen.
I just needed to vent in the moment. I needed to vent to my phone and just, I guess, get the words out of my brain with all the stress that I was feeling. I'm just glad that my voices voice was unintentionally empowering to people to speak out and say, me too, and share that we're all in the same situation with the economy and the price of groceries and gas and just the struggle of middle-class America.
Alicia, she didn't want to get into politics. She said specifically, This is not political, but I have to go back to that original TikTok video. She said three things. She paid the mortgage, housing market. She paid for food, price of groceries, inflation, and she paid for fuel, and they didn't have any money left. She said those three things specifically, Gavin Newsom says it's a lie.
Right. Well, because the governor of California is making it political. What folks like this woman don't want to hear is that things are actually better than what they are experiencing, especially when it comes to a wealthy governor from California. This actually speaks to a larger problem that Democrats are seeing and they are experiencing, especially, which is indicated through the polls, is that people feel that there's definitely a disconnect between the party and its treatment and its talk about the economy and what they are experiencing on a day-to-day basis. It doesn't help when Democrats come back and they say, Well, it's not that bad because it's not that bad for him.
Joe, I want to look at some polls here because I find them very interesting. There are two polls we're going to have here that break it down by generation. First is, this is what keeps people up at night, is what this says. I want to make sure I get this right. Gen Z, 56% of Gen Z, I don't know why my voice cracked there, don't worry about it, say that finances keep them up at night, 51% of millennials say finances keep them up at night. That's more than half of the last two generations of Americans who say that just being able to pay for things, a lot of these have college degrees.
Millennials, Gen Z, those are those who are 42 years old and younger, and that's what they're feeling at this point. That's why when you see other polls showing that Donald Trump is beating Joe Biden among voters under 35, it's because they feel what every other demographic is feeling, the fact that inflation is choking them at this point. Two-thirds of Americans right now, guys, can't afford one $500 emergency. There is one trillion dollars in credit card debt in this country right now, and you have people not paying off their credit card, so just paying the interest. They're chasing the interest, therefore, they cannot save. Eight in 10 Americans' new Fox news poll rates the economy as poor, and they see things only getting worse. Joe Biden is 40 points underwater on his handling of the economy. When I hear Gavin Newsom, and if I got to hear this one more time, that Thanksgiving this year, prices are down. Down from what? Last year. What was last year? They were at an all-time high. You can't gain 50 pounds and then say, Hey, you know what, honey? I only gained 20 pounds this year. I'm losing weight.
It doesn't work that way. That's what they keep pushing. They take something from an all-time high, it comes down a little bit and they say, See, things are getting better. Twenty-five % lower was Thanksgiving meals last in 2019 under Donald Trump. Twenty-five % lower.
Just to give some numbers and context of what you're saying, it's down 4.5 % from last year, but last year was up 14.7% from pre-pandemic levels. Don't spit in my face and tell me it's raining. Doctor, let's hear what the Biden administration actually is, I guess, trying to message from earlier today.
We are looking at consumer spending that's been driving this economy forward, posting growth rates that are north of 5%. We have an unemployment rate that's been below 4% for 21 months. And wages have not capped up. So real wages have grown. Real wages, in other words, wages are beating prices now. So does disposable income, by.
The way. Starting to, but for most of that time, they have not. Correct.
Doctor, I know you work hard. I know you have kids. How does that float to that mother that we just put on there who's trying to raise her family? Her and her husband are working four jobs.
Between two of them. I love Shannon Brem for always pushing back to make sure the truth gets out there. The bottom line, two years of disproportionate wage growth to record inflation, that's going to take a lot of time to recover. Experts are predicting you're not actually going to feel that recovery until the end of 2024. So you have a hardworking mother. She's a full-time working nurse. She's also in school. Her husband is working full-time, and they're just trying to raise their kids. We have to do what we can to make sure that they are able to live their American dream. And we have to focus on bringing costs down for the everyday American home. And that's where people are going to have to look at when they go to the ballots in 2024, it is going to be these kitchen table issues, not some of the more media-hyped up ones, but the ones that are really going to hit home that people are going to be voting for.
I give them the grace of saying, Hey, this is more complicated than one fact or stat, and certain things can get better. But I live in a small town and people are still struggling. To say that they're not doesn't win votes, I don't think.
