Transcript of Lawrence Taylor Talks Being The GOAT, Golfing With Michael Jordan & How He'd Shut Down Tom Brady
DOUBL3 COVERAGE PODCASTFor Cunningham, I sacked him 27 times. Randall Cunningham 27 times? Randall 27 times.
Oh my-They're having nightmares about you. Have you gotten to golf with the basketball goat Michael Jordan?
There's one thing about Michael, you got to understand. That's something he take to lose. I'm beating this one time. He's down on the vault, 19,000 or something. He wants to double the last hole.
Ready to bet, ready to flex. Leon is at, you see where it's at. Come tune in, we on string with a chest. You could Michael Parson, get you a sec. Over my coverage, Deion signing, bet like a rec, here began. Click you a lock up, hit it for down. We double coverage, and this is Deion. I'm a child, I'm a child. I'm a child, I'm a child. Blitz, Blitz, I'm going to get you a sec. I'm going to get you a sec. I'm going to get you a sec. I'm going to get you a Hello, guys.
Mr. Zack here. Welcome back to Double Coverage. Today, we have a very, very special edition for episode 7. I love to welcome on 10-time Pro Bowler, 10-time All-Pro, two-time NFL, sorry, three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, two-time Super Bowl champion, the only unanimous defensive selection for NFL MVP, the real L. T. Lawrence Taylor.
Hello, everybody. Okay, I'm just happy to be here, and I'm going to answer whatever questions he asked me. I'm not going to ask no questions. Hey, this is his show, so let's get it done. Thank you.
Thank you. I appreciate it. It's a tongue twister to get all of your accomplishments. You did so much. In my eyes, and not just my eyes, but many others' eyes, you're the greatest defensive player of all time. You are the goat. What accomplishment meant the most to you?
What's the accomplishment meant the most to me? I think I went '86 when I was NFL MVP. That was a big deal. And just playing with the Giants. When we first came in, when I first came in, Giants hadn't been to a playoff game in 25 years or something like that. So just be able to get to that playoff and play well. Bill Parsil, Bill Belichick, Ray Perkins. I'm telling you that I have gone through some Great coaching. A great coaching. I'm just happy that it turned out well. I'm happy it turned out well.
Couldn't have turned out much better.
Well, it could have. It could have. But I'll tell you, I've had a great time playing with the guys I played against, playing with the guys I played with. You're thinking about it coming When you're getting out of college that you want to do well, you want to be in the pros, you want to make money, you want to do a lot of different things. And you can't stop. I mean, you can't say, Well, just because I've been drafted, I'm going to be able to do all these things. No, you got to work. You got to work. You got to put it in perspective. And luckily, I had a great coach, which I consider him a great coach. What's his name? Bill Varsel. I consider him a great coach, and he helped me throughout the years to be the man I am.
Elaborating that, what was your relationship like both on the field and off the field with Coach Varsels?
Bill understood. He Understood that he's the coach, but I'm going to do what I want to do. Actually, a When I go out on a game day and stuff, I said, I've had all kinds of problems and stuff like that, but not on football Monday, not on football Monday. When I go out on the field, I want to bring the best I can, to be the best. I want to be the best player on the field. And Bill, he understood that. So he allowed me to do the things I do. He allowed me to do it. I I remember he telling me, he just get on my butt all the time about, you got to do this, you got to do this, you got to do this. And every time I didn't do that, I always made a big play. It was a big play because I knew if I'm out of position, you better do something good or you're going to have to listen to him. So he said, Yeah, he'll say something Okay, I'm going to let you do it your way. Yeah. He said, I'm going to let you do it your way.
If you want to do the defense this way or you want to go here and there, I'm going to let you do whatever you want to do. But as soon as you screw up, you got to do what I want you to do. And that was a deal we had. So I didn't have to listen to him for the next 10 years. That's They're good. I'm going to have to tell you. But Parcells is a hell of a coach. Yeah. He's a hell of a person. And I'm going to tell you what, he made... I was a great player, a good player. Parcells made me a better player, just with him. Yeah, he did.
We talked about your love of golf. Have you gotten to golf with the basketball goat, Michael Jordan?
Oh, yeah, but we play a lot. We play a lot. And Michael is a very good player. We go back and forth, but That's the one thing about Michael, you got to understand. All right? That's something you take to lose. Okay. And at the end of the day, you can beat him on every hole. He's going to press you on that last hole. He's going to press you on that asshole. And then, listen, hey. This is one time, and this is not all the time, because, listen, we go back and forth. I'm beating this one time, and he's down about, I don't know, like 19,000 or something like that. So He wants to double the last hole. He wants to double the last hole. Man, I didn't beat you all day, and now you want to double on the last hole? I went in because it's... Michael's like this, if you don't double him on that last hole, then you'll never play with him. Hey, he was not allowed. But so we dealt with that. So he lost the last hole.
Yeah.
So we're sitting there and he was waiting to get paid, but we was at a casino, and not only did he pay me, he actually gave me a I'm like, That was the most unbelievable thing I've ever said. You got your ass kick and you gave me a tip. I'm not going to lie. But don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that I'm a better golfer than Mike. I'm not saying Mike's a better golfer. I think we both were compared to each other, and we enjoyed the game. When I see him, I don't care what type of smile I got on my face. I'm trying to whip his... And that's the same thing. He's going to try to whip fire. That's legendary.
Growing up, I heard about that legendary '86 Giants defense you mentioned, the legendary '85 bears defense with Singletary and Richard Dent, the 2000s Ravens defenses with Ray Lewis and Ed Reid. In today's NFL, with all the rule changes that affect the defensive player, do you think it's possible that we see a defense that physical and that dominance?
I don't think we'll see another defense like that because the rules don't allow it. You can't hit the quarterback. You can only hit the running back at a certain spot, about three inches down from the waist belt. So I mean, stupid stuff. To play good defense, there got to be some intimidation. It's not about when I go out on the field on a Sunday morning and go into a stadium, it's not about I'm going to play the best that I can play. But the thing is that I've already got a reputation. People are already scared of what I'm going to do. So I'm so listening. When you can win the battle before you even get off the bus, Oh, my God. It's great. That's what I enjoy.
A lot of people would say with the rule changes today, it's maybe a good thing because there's a lot more offense, more touch downs, more scoring. What would you say to that?
I'm a defensive player. Why the hell I want that? I want that. Listen, I want a lot more scoring. That's not what I'm looking at. Then why even have us out there?
Why even have us out there? You can't play. Why even have you out there?
I understand. You say, well, they're trying to make the game where you don't get hurt. What game is that? What? That sounds crazy, right? Listen, NFL. In the NFL, we hit. We run, we hit, we tackle. That's what we do. Sometimes people got to get hurt, but we will wish them the best. Okay? Maybe send them a card or something, but we got to play. This is what we do. The game is physical. I like a physical... I can't have no fun if we're going to have two hand touch. No, I'm not having no fun like that. I understand that. I don't want people to get hurt, but listen, guys, I learned a long time ago, if you're going half speed, if I'm going full speed and you're going half speed, you're going to get hurt. Yeah. Okay. Or if I'm going, or you're going full speed and I'm going half speed, I'm going to get hurt. So listen, the thing is, go full speed. Less chances of getting hurt. And at the end of the day, you go home or the game is over. If they come over And they shake your hands and say, Hey, enjoy that.
That was physical. I'm not looking to be mental. I wanted it to be physical. Okay, I'm sorry, but that's how I am. Okay.
What's up, guys? It's your host of Double Coverage, Mystic Zack. And the only place that I bet at is mybookie. Ag. And when you do that, please go to mybookie. Ag. Show us love.
Given you played in such a different era where it was that much more physical and you had that playoff dominance, and you were not only the most feared pass rusher, but the most dominant run defender. What do you think when people try to compare your name to a player in today's game, like a Micah Parsons?
That's That was a cute way to get in there. Okay. Micah Parsons, I'm quite sure he's a good player. He's a great player. How he's the one He's better than the other. There's always been good players and stuff. I don't know. He He's a good player. He's good at what he does. He's good at what he does. I was good at what I do back in my days. Now, what else has to say? I mean, Michael Parsons, you're good.
So it's not good for anybody to compare you guys because you guys are different We're different players.
We're different players, man. I'll tell you what, we're different players. I actually hit people. Okay? So we're different type of players.
It's not a fair comparison.
It's not fair at all.
I know you- I win.
Okay, I win.
You do win. We know that. That goes without saying, right? You weren't a unanimous MVP by accident.
Yeah, right.
You went with my buddy Eric to the Giants game versus the Eagles. I know that. What do you think about this Giants team with Dart and Skatebo and this defensive line?
I mean, God, I wish he hadn't asked that question because at the end of the day, it's not fair comparing the Giants, nowadays Giants to the yesterday Giants, because like when I was playing, because we actually had to hit people. Okay? Right now, I don't know what type of football they're playing, but it's a different type of football that I play. But that's the way the league is. Okay? And they have a good quarter, a great quarter. I'm not going to say great. I'm not going to say great because great is good. No. They have a good quarterback. They have a good running back. They have a good team. It's just that they have to put it all together. Now, how the heck do you play the other night? And you want to play... Was it The second-dury, I mean, yeah. Prevent defense. Prevent defense. What the hell are you preventing? Because I believe in this.
I tell you what you're preventing. You're preventing your team from winning.
Most of the times. Because at the At the end of the day, I didn't kick your butt for three quarters, three and a half quarters, three minutes and three quarters, 11 minutes, eight minutes and 32 seconds. I've been kicking your ass, and all of a sudden, I wanted to go. Now I wanted to play prevent. Makes no sense. No, listen, no prevent. And I understand that is always a call because back in our day, that was always everybody thought, Well, listen, if they're going to score, we're going to make it harder for them to score because they got to use more time and get down the field. But they're looking for a day on field goal. The guy can kick a 50-yard field goal. What the hell are you looking at? Hey, send the dogs in. That's That was one thing I liked about Bill Parcells and Bill Belichick. They send the dogs in, all right? They send the dogs in. Listen, the secondary have been in sleep all day. Let them go in to sleep. We're going to sit in the dogs in. Yeah. Okay? Well, that's how football goes. But we keep on going.
More questions. Give me some more.
Yeah, I will. You got to sack a lot of quarterbacks. Who Who is your favorite quarterback to sack?
Favorite? See, people... Oh, he's a fast quarterback. He's an athletic quarterback. He's a... No. Jawarski. I sacked Jawarski 28 times. 28 times. 28 times. And they said, Oh, she's not... But Cunningham, who's his... I sacked him 27 times. What the hell? Randall Cunningham 27 times? Yeah, Rando 27 times.
Oh, my God.
I mean, this is...
I'm listening to you. They're having nightmares about you.
I enjoy because we go out there, we have a good time, and I play physical. Eight-man coverage, and we let you have the little... I don't want them to have nothing. No, let's go. But I tell you, I enjoy the game. I enjoy the camaraderie. I enjoy the good, the bad, the ugly. And some of the guys, most of the guys that I played against were still friends to the day. I know what? They're not going to give up. This guy right here, Jowarski or Cunningham, or Thysman, they're not going to give up. And you're not going to learn. You're not going to earn their respect just sitting at there. But no, you got to go. You got to teach them. Let them know that I know that you know that You can't beat me.
There's that mutual respect of you and the guys you win against.
Absolutely. You can't play football unless you have that type of respect for God. If you just If they're going to play stupid football, then they're going to play stupid football. But let's say, Guys, at the end of the day, I know what you're going to do. I'm not looking to hurt you. You know what? I'm not looking to hurt you because I got to respect you in the first place. It's all about respect and given them what they deserve. You expect, you think I know you're having meetings on the Mondays and Tuesdays and Wednesdays and all that stuff, and they're going over. Hey, let's sit. Hey. And they come up to Laurence Taylor, so and so, so and so. Well, you deserve to get the Lawrence Taylor that you want on Sunday night or Sunday or whatever because you work so hard for it. You deserve it. I got to give you my best. If I don't give you my best, what the hell I'm out here for?
So when you're out, you're thinking about the fans at home and that you need to put your best effort through because they're committing to watching you.
Well, it all depends on what bar I went to on Saturday, But I got to give you what I got, and sometimes it's not enough. Sometimes they will come out and totally give you their ass because in certain days. Everything don't work the way you want it all the time. But I believe in giving my teammates, the other team, and the fans. I believe in giving them what I got. Some days it's not enough. Some days, it's not enough. But you know what? Sorry. Some days it's not enough.
But you can always say that you did your best.
I do my best, okay? Now, there's times where our Our decisions that we make the night before, ain't the right decisions, okay? But I'm going to give you my best, okay?
It didn't affect you much.
Yeah, it does, okay? All right. But that's how it is. I love it. I love the contact. I love the way we interact and stuff. And you win, you lose. You're not trying to hurt anybody, but you listen, at the end of the day, if you come this side, you may get up.
Okay? Yeah. All right. You mentioned Joe Thaisman. You're still friends with him today. Oh, yeah. You guys had that famous, well, infamous play that unfortunately ended his career. But obviously, you were just playing 100 miles per hour.
Yeah. I called him at the hospital the very next day, and I said, Hey, Joe, man. And his His wife got on the phone, right? And she said, Can I speak to Joe? She said, she covers up the phone, but I could still hear her. She said, Joe, it's that guy? Is that guy. I said, Well, okay. All right. So I go and I say, I talked to Joe. Joe, Hey, man, I'm sorry. What happened? He said, Joe said, Hey, LT, you broke my tibular and fibular. He said, You broke them both. And I said, Joe, you know I don't do nothing halfway. If I want to break one, you just want to break them both. But We're good friends, still good friends. It is what it is.
That's football. Yeah, that's football. A lot of people that are watching this are Gen Z-ers. That's our audience, really young.
Say that again.
A lot of people that watch us are Gen Z. They're really young. They're 18 to 24 years old.
Oh, Gen Z? Yeah. I thought you were talking about the rapper. No. Jay-z.
Jay-z. He's pretty good. He's pretty damn good.
Okay.
I hope he's watching. That'd be pretty cool. Okay. But they might not know that not only are you in the NFL Hall of Fame, you're also in the WWE Hall of Fame. You main-evented Russellmania 11. You went up against a 400-pound Bam Bam Bigelow in front of a sold-out Hartford, Connecticut. What was that like?
It was good. I made a good financial decision there. But let me tell you something. He was probably one of the best athletes I have ever seen. I mean, even in NFL, when I see all the big guys and stuff, he was huge. But he could move. He could be one of the best athletes I have ever seen. I'm going to tell you what. I'm serious. I was shocked. I was amazed. Bam Bam was... I remember when he was shooting, I remember. He had this thing where he gets up on the top rope and stuff, and he He looked at me, he told me, Man, listen, I'm going to climb this rope. I'm going to climb this thing. And then, he said, Listen, I'm going to jump on you. Don't move. So I'm sitting there, I'm sitting on the thing, and he sit there, and you never know when he's going to do it because he started coming up that post and stuff, and he came off that, and all I could do is just close eyes, man. I'm like, Hey, don't. But he is... It was cool. I mean, this guy was probably one...
Seriously, if he had to play football and been like an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman, I think he could have excelled in that because he was a hell of an athlete.
How nervous were you going into that? Is it a different feeling than getting ready for a football game?
No, I get ready the same way. I get a bottle of scotch, and then I sit there at him. Good way to get ready. I'm ready.
The real LT. You won't get that in anyone else.
I know. You won't get it anywhere else.
Yeah, that's the real LT. What are some of your other hobbies outside of football? You said you're not really a football buff. No, I'm not a football buff. I heard you're a beast on the golf course. You play with my buddy Eric.
I play a lot of golf. Eric, yes, I play with Eric. But Eric, he's not getting the best LT he can get right now, because right now, I I got some problems and stuff like that. So he's not getting the best LTE debt. I don't think he can even handle the best LTE because he's still losing. Anyway, but... No, but seriously, I have a lot of fun. I play a lot of golf. I do a lot of charity work. I love to be around kids and stuff like that. Like I said, my life is better now than than it has been in the past. So I am happy with my life situation, my life. I'm happy with my partner in life. I'm happy with my friends. I'm cool.
That's a beautiful thing. You deserve it.
Well, yeah, that's what I say. Okay.
Do you think I could rock an earring like you? Maybe an MZ instead of an LT.
Can I pull it off? You got to understand, I am almost 65, 66 years old. When you be saying all this, this rock, this... What do you mean rock? Throw a rock at it? I'm not listening. Make that listen. Treat me like an old man, okay? Yeah. All right, boy. Understand? All right.
I'll translate.
Okay, you translate.

Besides the Wwe, you also had some legendary acting appearances. We know about any given Sunday, even appearances in the Waterboy, the Sopranos. How was that for you?
I tell you, I've done about 14 films, and I really do enjoy doing the films. We're going to go back to where Where my... What was this, 1993? I was Involved in drugs. I had a bad little habit and stuff. I was in a rehab for for, I mean, 60, 70 days, 80. I don't know how long it was. I was in for a long time. And just so happened, all the stone comes to the rehab because he wanted me to be in the movie any given Sunday. Right? And so I told him, Well, I would love I have to, but I can't because I got a commitment. I had to stay this thing for 70 days or something like that. Just so happened. So all of a sudden, they start shooting a film down in Florida and stuff. And he said, Well, why don't you just come and be a technical guy? For me, show us so that doing things. They'll go away, football players doing stuff and stuff. So I got out of rehab and I go down and I watch the projects and stuff. So they had Michael Duncan Clark from the Green Mile and stuff.
Well, he was playing the part of That they wanted me to play, right? The problem was, we're going through scene. Really, he's big, but he's not aggressive. He's not aggressive enough. He was not aggressive enough. So the director actually said, Listen, hey, in in the locker room, we got, Can you go in and put on a helmet and put on the uniform, and all this stuff, and put the gear on, and come out here and show Duncan how it's supposed to be played, right? So I said, Man, what the hell? So I go out and I do this whole scene all by myself. And after the scene was done, the director, he jumps up, said, That's what I'm talking about. He said, LT, you hired. Wow. And he said, Duncan, you're I'm sorry.
Just like that.
I'm sorry. But I had a great time making the movie. I'll tell you what, there were some great people in there. I I had a great time doing that. After that was over with, then I went out and found some other stuff I wanted to do with Jean-Claude Van Damme and all those guys. I moved around and had a good time.
What was your favorite role?
I would say my favorite is not the biggest role, but I think my favorite was any given Sunday. Yeah. Yeah. I think that was because it was almost something that I knew a little bit about playing football. A little bit? I know a little bit about that.
You could know something. I could see that. Okay. But it was instant magic when you were on that set. Yeah.
But I tell you, the guys, the people, the cast, everybody was just right It was hard on the money, man. It was easy. It took a long time, though, to shoot. Four months. But it was worth it.
Before we started shooting the show, we talked about how Mike Tyson came back to the ring and boxed against Jake Paul. Would you consider getting into the wrestling ring again?
Fighting Mike Tyson or Jake Paul? Which one?
Logan Paul in WW. My friend.
Would you wrestle First of all.
At Russellmania.
I'm not going up against Mike Tyson because he may forget this shit. I got to watch out for that.
So you're not wrestling him?
No, I ain't messing with Mike Tyson.
All right. I respect that. Would you wrestle against Logan Paul?
Logan Paul.
It would be similar to Mike and Jake, you and him, the GOAT.
Hey, anybody that used their fist for a living I am not messing with. Okay? Listen, no, but seriously, the guys nowadays, I mean, some great athletes. I mean, they When was the last time? Mike Tyson, God damn you. Jake Paul. I mean, you got all these guys, man. I'm telling you what they can... You just never know what's going to happen. I just never know what's going to happen. It can't be fake. It can't be this. It's not like back in the wrestling days where you got George Becker and Johnny Weaver.
But I tell you what, I enjoy my life now.
You know what? And there's things that I wish I I could do, but I know I can't do. Not where I'm at right now, but it is what it is, man. I tell you, I do like going and watching giant games. I know. To a point. I'm the type of giant fan that Once they start losing, I turn it TV off. I'm not a true... I just don't know. I don't want to see that. But it is what it is.
But you were pretty happy when they beat Tom braided twice in the Super Bowl?
You know what? Tom braided is a hell of a player. Hell of a player. I'm very glad that Giants beat him twice in Super Bowl. But how does a guy like Tom braided get that many Super Bowl?
I don't know.
I mean, listen. With two teams. Tom and Katie. I mean, even the name sounds a little... Okay, but no. Great player. I can't get it. He complains a lot. He always tell me he complain. Every time I turn around, they got a Tom braided rule in. What the hell? The tuck rule. Yeah. They got a Tom braided rule. Gosh, you get hit. Did somebody tell you in football, there is contact?
Yes. Okay. What would have happened if you went against Tom braided full speed?
That won't work. That wouldn't work. That wouldn't work, Tom. Tom. Tom. Tom. Tom braided. No. Me and Tom braided, he's not going to outrun me. I'm going to hit him because that's what I do. That's what I do. So I mean, listen. But he's a good dude. Belichick, thanks to all of them. And that's good enough for me.
That's good enough for you. Appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Before we head out, what's one thing about the real LT that nobody knows?
Really completely in love with my situation, my life now.
It's a beautiful thing. Thank you for your time. It was an honor.
All right, buddy. Thank you.
All right. Welcome back to Double Coverage. I would like to welcome on My guy. You heard him on the intro. World acclaimed rapper, Hotboy.
That's all.
What's good? What's good? He's standing in for Neon today to do the My Bookie segment of the week. Let's go.
Let's get it to it.
Cut the fan on.
Cut the fan on.
Yeah, yeah, yeah. You came on the intro, you killed it, but you love football.
Yes.
You grew up playing it, too?
I play running back, fullback, slot, receiver. They put me at quarterback, but I didn't really like quarterback. I played on defense, too, though. My favorite position on defense I played was corner, safety and linebacker. They put me at nose, too.
Who's your favorite player to watch today?
Justin Jefferson. You know Lamar, man? Lamar, yeah. You know that.
Are you friends with Lamar? That's my boy. Yeah.
That's my boy. I haven't seen him a couple of times. Broward, right?
Yeah, for sure. Thursday Night Football. We got the Vikings going against the Chargers. Chargers minus three and a half. Hot. What's your pick here?
My Money Line. Yeah.
Taking the charges. You're taking the Chargers. You're taking the Chargers. You're rocking her, Herbert.
Yeah, for sure.
I got the Vikings plus three and a half.
Vikings plus three?
Yeah. I think we cover.
For sure. What else? What other picture there? Egles, Giants. Egles, Giants.
Rematch. The Giants beat them last time. The Eagle was trying to get revenge.
It was yours. What's your dad?
I'm taking the Giants plus seven and a half. Plus seven.
All right, money line. I like that one, money line. I like the In the final game, Aaron Rodgers still playing.
You said he's the LeBron of the NFL.
I ain't going to lie, how much is he been playing, though, so far?
He's 41 years old.
I ain't going to lie, I feel like he's going to keep going, though. But you think this is last year?
I think he's got to be. I mean, this has to be. If it's not this year, it's got to be next year.
Lebron didn't stop yet, though.
Lebron has to stop, no.
How old is LeBron? 41, too?
Yeah, about there. But LeBron started playing at 18.
He's 40 already, though.
Lebron started at 18. Lebron's in year, what, 23?
Yeah.
I thought it was 25.
Yeah, maybe 20. I mean, it's a lot. Man, he gone.
I think he is in 23, though.
Yeah, yeah.
23. But now that last pick, packers over stillers.
We're both going packers over stealers. So we're both going packers over stealers. Yeah. I'll buy the point. I'll take two and a half. I think the packers take Rodgers down. But Rodgers is going to be trying like...
No, for sure.
He's trying to show up.
You think so? Yeah.
Yeah.
Think about it.
He You do got to show out though. Yeah. I ain't going to lie, they're finna show out on him, too, though. Yeah, yeah. They're not going to just let him come back and just be like... No, no, both. You left us, you finna just come back and win.
Yeah, I know.
No, he going for that. That's not happening. No, for sure.
Appreciate you having you on. Had to bring you on after you killed the intro. Before we finish every episode, we like to conclude with a little drip check. So tell the people what you got on. The jewelry, the clothes, everything.
