On April 27th, 2024, 30-year-old Micah Miller, a Myrtle Beach woman in the process of divorcing her pastor husband, called 911. It would be the last time that the world would ever hear her voice.
Robeson County 911.
I'm about to kill myself, and I just want my family to know where to find me. This is Coerced: The Devotion and Death of Micah Frances Miller. When Micah died, She purposely left behind a paper trail of evidence and clues for someone, somewhere to find and expose the people and systems that led to her death.
I got a call late last night. My wife has passed away. And it was self-induced and it was up in North Carolina. Y'all pray for me and my kids and everybody.
Luna Shark investigated this story for more than 18 months, and we covered all of the twists and turns, including over a dozen lawsuits, Sexual assault allegations, another mysterious death, a dark history of medical abuse allegations, generational abuse, a place called Gloryland, and even alleged bestiality.
Yeah, he said, my blood is gonna be on your hands. But prior to that, he was threatening to come in here and he said, call the cops, I don't care. I'm, I'm, um, armed and ready. Okay. Which he is. He just purchased about 6 firearms in the past couple of days. Oh my goodness.
My name is Mandy Matney. Together with journalist Liz Ferrell, this new Drop Feed titled Coerce: The Devotion and Death of Micah Francis Miller is a Luna Shark production based on true sunlight reporting.
And she said, you know, he's such a liar. And she actually said the FBI was looking into it. But now, I mean, what's come out, they have been.
Her story is about everything that led up to her death, the alleged coercive control that she faced in her relationship, with her pastor husband and all of the systems that failed her when she tried so hard to report that alleged abuse and escape from him.
I guess I'm just looking for a little bit of forgiveness. You know, it just adds to my, I guess, the things that I've accomplished in the past 20-something years.
Unfortunately, Micah couldn't save herself, but she could save other women who have been abused by their husbands and dismissed by the systems that are supposed to protect them. Be sure to follow Coerced: The Devotion and Death of Micah Francis Miller.
COERCED: The Devotion & Death of Mica Francis Miller is a LUNASHARK® DROP-FEED from the award-winning team behind the Murdaugh Murders Podcast — investigative journalists Mandy Matney, Liz Farrell and Beth Braden — along with producers Kate Thomas, Grace Hills and David Moses. It’s a remastered, chronological retelling of more than 2 years of original reporting from the True Sunlight Podcast, built for listeners who want to follow one case.
On April 27, 2024, 30-year-old Mica Miller — wife of Myrtle Beach pastor John-Paul Miller — walked a mile into a North Carolina state park and made a 911 call that would be the last time the world heard her voice. Within days, her death was ruled a suicide — a ruling that would have ended the story for most true crime journalists.
In the premiere of our remastered Drop-Feed series, Mandy Matney and Liz Farrell return to where their reporting began: the bizarre sermon Pastor JP Miller delivered the morning after his estranged wife's death. An obituary that reads like a taunt. A criminal history that includes running over a woman with a car — twice. And a stack of police reports showing Mica tracked, harassed, and hospitalized against her will in the months before she died.
Police say that JP Miller didn't pull the trigger. But as Mandy and Liz explain — there's more than one way to end a life.
COERCED takes a deeper look at JP Miller’s dark past that includes rape allegations, alleged bestiality, an assault conviction and pardon, and a pattern of allegedly abusive behavior that can be traced back to his father — Rev. Wayne Miller. JP’s felon father once owned a Christian complex in South Carolina called Gloryland… before it mysteriously burned down.
Through exclusive interviews, 911 calls, court filings, and documents obtained through relentless FOIA requests, COERCED examines coercive control, medical and spiritual abuse, and the systems that dismissed a woman fighting for her life — and asks what accountability looks like.
Mica couldn't save herself. But her story could save others.
